To the Editor, Mr Peter Gehr's writing about a 'dog attack' in downtown Raglan is very creative but does not represent what really happened that February day last year. We are the family he was writing about, not German tourists but a Dutch family living in Raglan. My kids, who are used to dogs, patted the dog who was not only friendly looking, but was indeed very friendly. When we walked away our youngest daughter stayed behind and wanted to hug the dog. We called her several times but she didn't listen and the dog felt treatened by her hugging attempts. Then she got bitten. We were not shocked, we were angry because our daughter didn't listen to us. This was not the dog's fault, not at all. We told this to the owner who saw what had happened and apologised several times. It was our fault not staying with our daughter when we saw she stayed behind. She wasn't screaming with fright and clutching her bloody face, she had a little fright and wound, no stitches required!

To the Editor, Thank you to the people who wrote a response to my earlier letter re Raglan and its dog policies. These are two very unpleasant stories indeed! I wonder why New Zealand has so many aggressive dogs? Our relationship to dogs seems very different to other parts of the world, for one example, Europe. I was shocked and delighted to see people allowed to take their dogs with them onto buses and trains, and in many places even into cafes. The general public appeared perfectly relaxed with the presence of dogs as were the dogs with the public. Is muzzling when the dog is in public in New Zealand, an answer to this random seeming lottery of a dog's behavior in this country? Best regards, Bronwen Christianos, Raglan.

Local teenager wows judges on talent show

The 15-year-old auditioned in Auckland in December for the popular New Zealand talent show and made it through the first selection process into ‘boot camp’, after a unanimous ‘yes’ vote by all four judges. His audition aired on TV3 on Sunday and showed background footage of Reiki and his family in Raglan, including a shot of his parents, Brian Ruawai and Naomi Tuao, performing with their reggae band, Cornerstone Roots. Brian said Reiki, who attends Hamilton Boys’ High School, had grown up on the road with the band, going to festivals, gigs and shows. "When the kids where young we were the type of parents that let them play with our instruments and they could fully explore their musical interests," he told X-Factor. For his audition, Reiki chose John

Legend’s song Ordinary People, a song that last year failed to impress X-Factor judge Melanie Blatt, a former singer with the All Saints. But it was a song that Naomi said he often sang around the house. His rendition on the programme before a live audience seemed to impress everyone, with a standing ovation by the audience and great comments from all the judges. “Reiki, I have just fallen in love with your voice. I am swooning," Mel said. “Bro, you're like a diamond, a diamond in the rough and I want to be part of that polishing," added fellow judge, Stan Walker, a former winner of the Australian Idol television talent show. Reiki was no stranger to performing, having acted in a local short film, The Dump, as a 12-year-old, and regularly being part of the Cornerstone Roots line up. He also sang on the band’s 2013 release, Is it Real. “He [Reiki] could sing before he could

talk,” Brian told the Raglan Chronicle. “He was good. I thought he was very natural,” he said of Reiki’s audition, especially as he had been up against a lot of Reiki Ruawai adults much older than him. This was the second series of X-Factor NZ, which included New Zealand-born singer Willy Moon and his wife, English singer Natalia Kills. An initial pre-audition tour of 13 towns and cities was held in October and early November 2014, with the judges' auditions filmed in Auckland in late November and early December. Rachel Benn.

Sisters talk about the games politicians play he psychology and morals around T politics and our society was the topic of discussion when the Harré sisters visited Raglan last week as part of their ‘Rethink the System’ pilgrimage around the North Island. The challenge was laid down by politician and activist Laila Harré and her psychology lecturer sister Niki for Raglan people to generate radical and inspirational ideas for living well together during a talk and workshop led by the pair. About 30 people turned up to hear Niki talk about social issues, such as justice, morality, role-modeling and the games people played to either include or exclude others from having a say in the social system. Niki, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Auckland and social change advocate, said social movements could not be built on fear, as people needed inspiration and hope. People could play ‘infinite’ games, where the object was to include as many people as possible and keep evolving the game so it continued as long as possible without knowing how it would end. Ideally,

social movements were like this. “To me, that’s what sustainability is: keeping the game going, bringing people in, changing the rules to keep it going,” Niki said. People could also play ‘finite’ games, where the object was to win and to control, such as in politics. Laila, who led the Internet Party at the last election, said after the revelations prior to the election - from the Internet Party about mass surveillance in New Zealand and from Nicky Hager’s book about ‘dirty politics’ here – she thought that “decent people” would have done something about it through their votes. “After the last election, a lot of us felt disturbed, confused, disappointed that despite a lot of discussion about how politics was done there seemed to be a resistance to the idea that there was something very wrong with our political system,” she said. The 2014 general election had had an “overwhelming dominance” of finite games, controlled mostly by the political parties, their members and media. “They have a huge interest in controlling those games and to keep winning those

games,” Laila said. One million people did not even participate in the last two elections by casting a vote, and these were mostly Maori and young people, so there was an obvious need to excite and engage with these people. Following their talks, the sisters led a workshop designed to generate ideas from the audience on how society could be improved. Niki said one idea was to get rid of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a measure of New Zealand’s economic growth and replace it with a Growth Domestic Fulfillment index that would measure our own concepts of success. Raglan people also shared ideas about local initiatives that were working well here, such as the Raglan Noticeboard and the time bank. Niki said the sisters would summarise the best ideas that had been gathered in their month-long pilgrimage and post it on their website (www.rethinkthesystem.org) when they finished. Clare Beet, a Waikato University Master of Science student and Dean Sandwell, a Waikato University Earth Sciences Technician, are both born and bred Raglan locals and grew up living as neighbours on Upper Wainui Road. The two each visited Antarctica for the first time last month, both for research, but both focusing on quite different aspects of science. Clare’s trip was funded by a New Zealand Post Antarctic Scholarship from Antarctica New Zealand and a Research Institute Scholarship of $12,000, which she was awarded by the University of Waikato late last year. She is undertaking her research with

the university's Environmental Research Institute. Clare’s research involved collecting soil samples, in particular samples containing springtails - a 1.5mm long, six-legged insect-like creature - and mites. Springtails are the largest land-based animal that live year-round in Antarctica and are sensitive to climatedriven environmental changes. To assess the changes in the environment, Clare looked at the subtle differences in the genetic structure of each species, comparing them with other previously examined populations in Victoria Land. “We had a really successful trip and got samples from some amazing places - a few of which may be the first time springtails have been collected there. The whole experience was just surreal. Every time I looked around I was ‘wowed’ all over again,” says Clare. Technician Dean Sandwell was in Antarctica to service several long-term soil-climate

monitoring stations, as part of a cooperative project with Landcare Research, United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Waikato. “Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth with 98% ice cover, at an average of 2100m thick and is the Earth’s largest fresh water reserve. Of the ice-free ground, only 0.3% is available for soils to form. Relatively little is known about soil climate in Antarctica and the effect that it has on pedogenic processes (processes that lead to soil formation) and viability of microorganisms, invertebrates and plants. Most importantly this data provides base-line atmospheric and soil climatic information in an area sensitive to global climate change,” says Dean. Getting to Antarctica is no ordinary journey. Dean and Clare flew eight hours on a United States CL-130 military plane, with retractable skis to land on the ice. On arrival they

underwent survival training and spent the night sleeping in an ice trench. For the remainder of their stay Dean had the luxury of staying at Scott Base with daily helicopter flights to climate station sites. “Flying in the helicopter was amazing. Watching killer whales stalking the sea ice edge while penguins dashed for a safe water entry was a once in a lifetime experience,” says Dean. In contrast, Clare and her team were camping in a remote field location north of the Dry Valleys, over 250 km from Scott Base. "After almost a week of isolation the noise of an approaching helicopter became one of my favourite sounds, especially as it meant more food and drink rations. Flying in the helicopter surrounded by some of the most picturesque landscapes Antarctica has to offer was definitely one of the highlights," says Clare. Natalie Guest

Swim club has successful formula for families T

he Raglan Swimming Club is doing its bit to fight the country’s drowning problem, with its summer children’s swim programme proving even more popular this year.

Club president Mel Brydon said Term 1 enrolments for this year numbered more than 250, up from 90 the previous year and about 45 in 2013, when it had first started running the learn-to-swim programme at its base at Raglan Area School. She believed the classes were becoming more popular because they were cheaper than Hamilton alternatives, were locally based and gave parents a range of options for the days and duration of the swim programme. “Part of everything we do is about reducing the barriers for our community,” she said. Having a great relationship with the school and a dedicated bevy of volunteers also played a major part in the programme’s successful formula. This year the club had two qualified swimming coaches, with teacher trainee Josh Coombridge as head coach. “I think the kids are enjoying it. There’s a lot of smiling kids that I

The club was trying to offer more for these younger children, but this would take a little time to develop. Mel said the club was also trying to get a swim programme sponsorship programme established, whereby businesses could sponsor swimming lessons for some of the children. All profits from the swim programme, along with money raised from the annual “Bridge to Bridge’ fundraiser swim, charities and grants were invested back into the club. At the end of Term 1, the pool

would be drained and the pool lined, in an effort to retain heat in the pool and keep it open longer next summer for members to use and for swimming lessons. The club had previously bought a solar cover to help heat the outdoor pool and had been fundraising for two years for the lining, which would cost more than $40,000. Mel said the club wanted a sustainable pool heating solution that was low maintenance and environmentally-friendly with few operating costs, and believed this was the answer. Swimmer goes for gold

62 but his age hasn’t stopped him from cleaning up at the NZ Maters Games recently held in Wanganui. Winning eight medals in total – mostly gold with a couple silvers as well – the athlete says it’s “all about participation” when it comes to the annual sporting event. Competitors ranged from 20 - 94 years of age, again proving that age is no barrier to participation. The majority of competitors were aged over 45 years and 486 competitors aged 70 plus. Three quarters of the competitors came from outside of the region and 180 plus were international visitors. Having first entered back in 2013 at the “ripe old age of 60” Peter has continued his winning streak, particularly in the swimming events, and has a pretty impressive medal tally to show for it. With event categories ranging from running, swimming and fencing to euchre, poker and rock ‘n’ roll, Peter says it’s a great

Water planning needed due to dry weather Waikato Federated Farmers has heard reports this summer of some shallow underground bores on dairy farms drying up following insufficient recharge from rains during last winter. The council’s industry and infrastructure manager Brent Sinclair said farmers could contact his team for advice when current bore pumps were no longer delivering water. “The region has experienced below normal rainfall for a number of years and as a result groundwater levels have declined. This may result in some bores having water levels going below the pump intake. “In some bores it may be possible to simply

    

lower the pump mechanism within the existing bore to improve reliability. “If this is not possible it may be necessary to drill a new bore. This will need a resource consent and our staff can help with advice on this. We would aim to process such an application as speedily as possible.” Mr Sinclair said problems with lowering groundwater levels may get worse in the long-term. “Climate change is predicted to make drier spells more common and this will increase the likelihood of shallow bores running dry. “So farmers and other water users should take this into account in their future planning and look at what they need to do to help manage their businesses going forward.” S Ward

Māui dolphins: So what is all the fuss?

Dolphins are always exciting to see, especially in Raglan where the thrill of watching orca in the harbor is a treat that ripples through town. Much smaller than their 9 metre long orca cousins, Māui (1.5m) dolphin also make their home on the West coast. Like the kiwi, Māui dolphin are endemic to New Zealand which means they are found nowhere else in the world. Due to disease as well as human-induced factors, there has been a rapid decline in the Māui dolphin population to only an estimated 55 animals left. This means the species is on the edge of extinction. In response to the threat of losing this taonga, big steps have been taken to protect the little Māui. A ban on set netting and trawling along part of the West coast and more stringent controls over petroleum and mineral prospecting and mining have been set. What can you do? The can

Recycled Raft Race begins at 12.30

The raft race was born in 2004 to replace the wild and somewhat risky Recycled Trolley Derby. The main focus of the race was to have fun and celebrate recycling in our community.

If you live in or visit Raglan, it is highly likely that you enjoy being out amongst it in the sea. Raglan is great for surfing, kayaking, fishing, sailing and being out on the water. No matter what you sport or interest, we can all work together to come up with solutions for our community so we can preserve the beautiful place we live in.

We’re excited to see the creations this year, especially from last year’s winners. Thanks to Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving, Raglan Kayaks and all our paddlers for keeping the race safe.
