To the Editor, This coming Saturday the 9th Maui’s Dolphin Day takes place to celebrate this beautiful species and to raise awareness to its rapid decline. Only 55 are left of this smallest dolphin Marlin Cafe & Grill. Dine in. And it is almost certain that these last 55 will also die in no longer than a decade or two from now. It would be the first extinction The Shack. Are we truly this ruthless, this greedy? Every day tons Shane Ardern MP of fish get thrown out, and we cannot TARANAKI-KING COUNTRY ‘grant’ these beings 300 km of seabed to enable them a chance of LIFE? And do we really want to be known to be the first country to cause a sea Electorate office: mammal species to go extinct? That 25 Roche Street, Te Awamutu makes me feel real proud. I’m sure it p 07 825 0263 (Freephone) makes John Key feel real proud too to e ShaneArdernMP@xtra.co.nz have this on his resume when meeting WeatherMap - New Zealand weather forecasts with other world leaders, representing our nation. Didn’t we profile ourselves www.national.org.nz as a conscious people preserving

natural beauty? Isn’t this what inspires people from around the globe to come see and enjoy our country? It can so easily be different! It is truly so EASY! We just say NO! – or YES! if you like. YES to LIFE, reserve this tiny stretch of sea for nature to restore and be enjoyed in a different way. It can be ‘marketed’ as you wish as a reserve where research can take place and divers can come to enjoy these amazing beings. After all, these are the smallest dolphins in the whole world and there are only 55 left… To me this is a no-brainer, stop fishing – or fish responsibly if you need. How difficult can that be – there is nothing to lose. Fisherman can supplement their ‘loss’ by taking people out on their boats to enjoy the Maui’s, and their restored habitat how’s that! Let’s stop just shrugging our shoulders and taking this as a lost course. I know many dedicated passionate people do everything in their power to prevent the ‘inevitable’ – including those who are once more organizing the Maui’s Dolphin Day this Saturday - thank you. Come and join them and cast your vote. It cannot be true we just let this happen when the solution is so easy and so available. See you http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla on Saturday in Raglan! National sea kayaking forum coming to town Every year, Kiwi Association of Sea Kayakers ‘KASK’ choose a special spot in the country to hold their national forum – this year they’ve chosen the waters around Whaingaroa/Raglan and for three days in March the waters will team with kayaking activity.

Organiser Evan Pugh from Putaruru is a member of the Bay Association of Sea Kayakers and one of three who has organised this year’s gathering of up to 100 keen kayakers. “Without giving too much away, our guest speaker on Saturday night is Sean Smith (aka ‘The Fat Paddler’). Sean’s a man who has had an interesting journey”, explains Evan. The national forum is designed to cater to the interests of a wide cross-section of sea kayakers. It will be based at Raglan’s Kopua Holiday Park, ideal because it’s next to the water. Sea kayaking as a leisure activity and the sport has grown significantly in numbers in the last decade. KASK has existed for 20 years, and as a not-forprofit organisation its key purpose is to encourage and support people to give the sport a go – once hooked, as Evan explains, there’s a whole world of adventure out there to be had. The association also represents the interests of sea-kayakers at NZ Water Safety Council meetings. Evan started the sport, through a friend, when he wasn’t so fit. “To do 2 km tested me when I first started. Now, twelve years later I’ve been to places like Mayor Island, 30 km out to sea. A lot of people who get into the sport are already reasonably fit. The biggest age group in our 600 strong membership are the 50-70 year olds. Often they’ve been active in other ways, like tramping and their knees have given out but they pick up kayaking at this age with no former experience and do really well.” Kayaking is a great exercise to strengthen the upper and core body and with a few paddles under their belt people tend to find their own level to enjoy the sport. Kayaks range in price from between $2,000 to top of the line at $4,000 or so. The kayakers worst enemy, Evan says, is the wind. “Modern kayaks are among the most sea-worthy of craft. They’re designed to roll with the waves, but the wind can play havoc especially if conditions change. That’s why we don’t recommend kayakers go too far out until they’re very competent.” Registrations have been a little slower than expected and when the Chronicle caught up with Evan there were still spaces available. When registering, kayakers are asked to state their skill level, with four grades, from novice through to advanced catered for. An advanced kayaker is able to roll a kayak in rough conditions and would have completed several challenging sea trips. The forum runs from Friday March 8 to Sunday March 10 and all skill levels will be catered for. On Friday evening a flare demonstration is scheduled and on Saturday and Sunday local paddles and training sessions, coupled with presentations, will mean there’s plenty to do. Local kayakers are welcome to register, spaces permitting, by contacting Evan Pugh on Ph 07 883 6898, emailing: sheepskinsnstuff@xtra.co.nz. The registration form is also available at www.kask. co.nz on the events page. Sue Russell

Tania and Richard Lattaney on Lake Wanaka mid winter

Couple looking forward to forum Raglan couple Richard and Tania Lattaney can’t wait for the sea-kayaking national forum to get under way. They’ve been to others in the past and found there’s always something new to learn as well as a lot of good keen seakayakers, like themselves, to mix with. Tania, Raglan’s Happy Feet lady, and a ‘Raglanite’ from wayback, is less-experienced than Richard but just as hooked on the sport. The couple get out in their double-kayak as often as they can. Years ago a much younger Richard was big-time into white water kayaking but as he got older he began to feel out of his depth, so started sea-kayaking. “It’s great recreation, very different from the demands of dealing with turbulent waters, but it has lots of thrills to it, like being able to be quiet in the water and observe all our marine life close-up. I’ve even had to cope with a baby seal landing on the kayak and one time I was within arms-reach of an orca, keeping an eye on us.” His experience will be put to good use over the three day national kayaking forum. As a senior operator he’s put his name down to be a team leader, showing visiting kayakers some of the many gems of places we have on our door-step. Open sea kayaking needs a

different set of skills from harbour and lake paddling. It demands a good level of fitness, particularly to counter the effects of sudden changes in wind and sea conditions and this is where the Kiwi Association of Sea Kayakers annual forums are so valuable - equipping kayakers with learning the basic as well as the more advanced competencies. “It’s a sport with a growing number of women in it and when we have our forums we have time as women to get together. I’ve made some wonderful friends through kayaking and together we’ve been to some incredible places”, says Tania. One of the most popular spots the couple has paddled around is around New Zealand’s renowned Abel Tasman Park, a kayakers mecca, though they’ve also been to the distant shores of Samoa. “We had 11 fabulous days on the water at Abel Tasman, pulling into little bays along the way. I would recommend it to anyone.” Richard is keen to find out how much interest there in forming a local kayaking club, not only for dedicated sea-kayakers but for anyone who enjoys a paddle. He hopes to set up a web-site or face-book page as a space to communicate and to organise group paddles every so often around our beautiful water spaces. Sue Russell

With a love of art and drawing, Vincent David always wanted to be a tattoo artist. After opening Custom Collective in Hamilton along with a friend, Vincent has now opened a brand new tattoo shop in Raglan – Soul Studio. “I’ve always just drawn and grew up liking tattoos from a young age,” said Vincent. Working in a fish factory in Tauranga before his apprenticeship, he’d always had an avid interest in tattooing. But it was the passing of his mother that really sparked a fire in his belly. “When my mother passed away she said to me, ‘If you really want to do it, just do it,’ so I quit my job and moved to Auckland. I basically just went door knocking for an apprenticeship.” Having drawn his whole life, Vincent’s leap of faith paid off, scoring an apprenticeship under Nik Glavish at Stigmata Tattoo in Auckland. “I was an apprentice for about three years. It was pretty hardcore but it was good because I learnt heaps.” Now co-owning his own studio, Custom Collective, opening the Raglan shop was something he’d thought about for a while and decided he’d ‘give it a go’ in 2013. Still committed to Custom Collective, Vincent

Tattoo artist Vincent David in his new ‘Soul Studio’ spends the week in Hamilton while working from Soul Studio during the weekends or by appointment. Not bound to any particular style of tattooing Vincent reckons his inspirations stem from tattoos he sees around as well as the ideas from people that come to see him. “I’ve got some favourites, I quite like Japanese style because I like to be able to draw pictures. But really I like doing every style.” Soul Studio will also be a base for the many national and international guest artists that Vincent hosts during their visits to the area. Having tattooed at the New Zealand International Tattoo Expo last weekend,

Vincent and a bevy of tattooed artists from all over the world were spending the week at Solscape for an ‘artist’s retreat.’ “Next week I’ve got a guy from Japan, a girl from England and a couple more guys from America staying with me,” he said. Holding an opening party about a month ago, the new Soul Studio has been going steadily as Vincent continues to kit out the studio space. Deviating away from CDs, the drop card on its own looks just like an Eftpos or ID card. On the reverse you can find a website and code where you can download the tracks. “We were mixing down with a friend of ours and we saw one of those drop cards and we were like ‘what’s this thing?’ I think the older generation may be a bit baffled but we wanted to try something new,” said drummer Freddy Limbert. Having spent most of the summer performing at various events on the festival circuit as well as performing with power blues duo Swamp Thing, the Kryptonites have also been holding monthly gigs at Vinnies over the past eight months. “The gigs there have been going great, it’s been building a lot since we started and people

The Kryptonites: Cameron Olsen, Freddy Limbert and Ashley Knox seem to bring new people along every time. We have guest artists play every now and then too,” says Freddy. Making a musical connection with Swamp Thing drummer and former John Butler Trio member, Michael Barker, the band have been busy recording their EP and writing songs for their upcoming full album. “It’s definitely been a bit of a process. The last six months or so we recorded with Michael. He is just fantastic, he’s been so inspirational for us and really supportive,” says Freddy.

Fine-tuning their sound since officially establishing themselves around a year ago, some of their uniqueness stems from a mix of wholesome instruments like the fretless bass and gut-string guitar layered with textural drumming. Looking ahead for the year, the Kryptonites hope to get their EP pressed soon as well as working on their new album and warmly invite the community to their EP release gig at Vinnies this Friday 1st March. you wish. The idea is to have some fun and enjoy creating our own works with maybe an exhibition at the end of the year. All very informal and anyone who would like to have a go is welcome to come along and see for themselves. The Art Studio at the Old School Arts Centre is well equipped with easels, tables and running water but bring your own paints, pencils or pastels and something to paint or draw on. Coffee and tea are available for 20c - now that’s a bargain! Members sometimes bring something naughty for morning tea – yum! We are hoping that the new time in the morning will suit more people and the more frequent fortnightly classes will encourage more budding artists.

Clean glass business does the work for you

Ian Ellis of ClearShield Waikato in front of a ‘ClearShielded’ shower stall

Whether it’s shower doors, windows or balustrades, ordinary glass is constantly exposed to weathering and surface dirt – hard work for the cleaner – but local Ian Ellis reckons his new business makes clean glass an easy task. “I actually used ClearShield back in the UK when I was a plumber but I hadn’t seen it over here,” says Ian. Glass can be stunning and versatile but with a porous surface, dirt and water deposits can build up pretty quickly reducing visibility and light. The ClearShield system acts like a Teflon coating on glass, a completely transparent, chemically inert and non-hazardous layer that acts as a protective barrier. “The thing was, I hadn’t been able to clean my windows properly for ages. There would always be streaks left behind. Then I started talking with a friend about ClearShield and contacted the sub lease holder for New Zealand,” said Ian. Four weeks later and now a licensed applicator, Ian services the whole of the Waikato area under the ClearShield brand. With a 15-year guarantee, when cleaning glass that is treated with ClearShield, you just spray on some ClearShield aftercare product and hose off with water – leaving your windows clean and streak-free. Worldwide, over 30 million square metres have been covered with ClearShield saving around 85% on cleaning time. A huge saving for commercial businesses. Interestingly, the Sky Tower, which was treated with ClearShield 15 years ago is due for a re-coat this year. If you’re interested in ClearShield, contact Ian on 021 146 2833 or 825 6877. Fundraiser fun run for great cause It’s coming up a year since Ruth Jowers lost mum Sandra Deadman to breast cancer. From diagnosis to passing away took just three months – it was a really tough time but something is about to happen that will give Ruth some comfort, turning a dark time into something positive, for a cause dear to her heart. On Saturday 9 March a ‘pink fun run/ walk’ will take place around the bridges. It’s a fundraiser in part as well as a celebration for Ruth of all her mum was. Entry is simply a gold coin donation and along with some stalls raising a bit more and any sponsorship received, all proceeds will go directly Waikato Breast Cancer Trust, an organisation ‘hell-bent’ on research and finding cures for this deadly disease. In the Waikato 250-300 women annually are diagnosed with a form of breast cancer – think of it as pretty much one every working day of the year. Across the country in any given year about 2,700 women of all ages, socio-economic persuasion and ethnicity will hear the words, “you’ve got breast cancer”. WBCT research nurse Jenni Scarlett is one of many working hard at the chalkface of new-edge research, monitoring the trialling phases of drugs and building up data on the longevity of women undergoing any one of a number of cancer-treatment regimes. It’s exacting, and patient work . “We’re moving into an era of very much tailoring the treatment to the particular sub-type of cancer. We don’t always get answers as it is such a mysterious disease. It can come back many years after diagnosis and initial treatment but in the years I’ve been in cancer research there have been so many enormous gains”, says Jenni.

Setting the science aside, Jenni feels the journey women go on who have consented to be in the trialling phases of cancer treatments. “Without these women being part of the trials we would not be anywhere near down the road that we’ve travelled. Through the trialling phases it can take up to fifteen years to evidence a drug is effective and can be mainstreamed.” Years ago often treatment for a women diagnosed with breast cancer was to have a radical mastectomy followed by basic radio therapy but these days Jenni explains, research has shown that many women can keep their breasts and have the tumour removed. And while researchers are getting their heads around just how sophisticated and complex breast cancers are, funding has become more challenging over the last few years. “We spend a lot of time also putting in funding applications for specific research. We also administer the Waikato Breast Cancer register – documenting the health information from diagnosis through various treatment phases and all this is a huge challenge to fund adequately.” That’s why Jenni and those connected with the Trust are all behind the efforts of people like Ruth, who out of their personal experiences with this tragic disease, have harnessed the energy to transform it into something very positive. Ruth puts it best: “I’m not a doctor or a nurse. This is just one thing that I can do to help them. Mum was always very behindthe-scenes, she was always their helping others, making a difference and so to do this is also helping me.” The walk/run starts prompt at 11 am on Saturday 9 March and Ruth asks that those who want to be in it assemble by the boat ramp at Kopua reserve no later

than 10.45 am. There will be prizes and people are encouraged to come a l o n g wearing pink. The emphasis is not on being Jenni Scarlett first but being part of something that will make a difference and the 2 km or so walk is tailor-made for families, including mums and dads with pushchairs. “I’ve got a few people committed to help with a couple of stalls as well, to raise more money. Also any businesses that want to come on board with sponsorship or direct financial support would be fantastic.” Some music at the end of the trek after prizes have been given out would also be a welcome addition to the day’s activity and Ruth can see that if the weather holds, post-walking/running might just turn into a bit of a community picnic time together. Waikato Breast Cancer Trust will have a stall set up with information. Sharon Tribe, the Trusts’ fundraising coordinator will man it. The first anniversary of her mother’s death will be a big time for Ruth, and a threshold in itself, but it is one she plans to share with others, like so many who want to feel empowered and to experience a measure of healing that comes with ‘doing something’. For any further information or if you want to help out in some way, please contact Ruth by Ph: 825 5274 or by email at ruth.mark@farmside.co.nz Sue Russell

RAGLAN Chronicle 7

Obituary: Cecil Ward by Judith Collins

This week Cecil Ward was laid to rest at Te Mata, in the little Catholic cemetery adjoining the church she attended since childhood. She spent most of her 86 years in Cecil Ward the Whaingaroa area, known and loved for her faith, her wisdom and her kindness. Cecil was born in 1926 and grew up on the Ruapuke coast, where she went on horseback to Ruapuke School. Her love for the area remained with her all her life. She was part of a wide network of large Catholic families, and after she left school, she was very much involved in supporting those with babies and young children. Members of the Brown family remember warmly Cecil’s love and care for them as children. But at the age of 24, in spite of her love for her home, her family and her community, Cecil was drawn to very different way of life. She moved to Auckland to enter the Carmelite Order as nun, a life of strict enclosure, prayer and sacrifice. She remained with the Carmelites for 25 years, when it became clear to her that her aging parents needed her at home in Ruapuke. It was her intention to return to the Carmelites but, after 8 years of caring for her parents until their deaths, this was not to be. Cecil said that signing the formal request to be released from her vows was the hardest thing she ever did, but she knew it was the right decision She then had the idea of opening her home as a ‘house of prayer’, offering women rest and time out, and over a period of 10 years a number of women took up this opportunity. Meanwhile she also continued to farm several acres of land, raising sheep, beef cattle and ponies, and helping relatives and neighbours in need of any support she was able to offer. She stayed at Ruapuke until she was unable to drive any longer, then moved into accommodation adjoining the home of Susanne and Adreas Broring on Wallis St. She loved being near the church in James St, and her little purple mobility scooter became a familiar sight as she went daily to pray. Susanne says Cecil was always an inspiration to her, with her quiet acceptance of advancing age and her determination not to be any trouble to anyone. Our Catholic community in Raglan-Te Mata also loved her dearly, and felt privileged to have this woman of deep prayer and quiet wisdom among us. As her health deteriorated she moved to a rest home Ponsonby, living there till she died. Cecil herself would perhaps have liked to slip away quietly with minimum fuss, but a large crowd of family, friends, and community gathered at Te Mata on Tuesday for her Requiem Mass, giving thanks for a woman whose long life shone with her love for God.

Wharf building named as finalist in colour awards A fresh start for the damaged Raglan wharf building has transformed the community space – and has captured the attention of the judges in coveted Australasianbased colour awards. The project has earned its designer, Robert Dowling of Beca, recognition as a finalist in the Dulux Colour Awards 2013, battling entries from Australia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand to make the shortlist for the best commercial exterior colour scheme. After a destructive fire ruined Raglan’s old wharf and building, Beca was commissioned to re-invent the local landmark to reflect both the history of the site and the fresh, ever-changing feel of the coast. The finished work is “a community

centrepiece”, says Dulux Colour expert Louise McKenzie-Smith. “The project captures the stunning beauty of the natural environment, while still referencing the existing structure of the building” says McKenzie-Smith. The guiding concept for

the new building was ‘long life, loose fit’ – meaning the look needed to be longlasting, but still be adaptable as needs for the space change. Materials needed to withstand the corrosive environment of the West Coast. Using Dulux paints, the scheme combined

vibrant colours drawn from the existing building as well incorporating the palette of natural features surrounding the wharf - the sea and harbour, iron sands of the west coast beaches, the cliffs and flats that surround the harbour and the vast sky. Steph McDonald

Golf Club invites you to join Our Raglan Club has entered teams in various inter-club competitions that are already underway.

Eight players contested the Prebble Cup first round at Ngahinepouri on Sunday. The mostly new-comers to matchplay, especially over 36 holes in one day in searing heat, managed to play very well, especially in the afternoon singles, and drew

with the Hamilton Club team. Unfortunately a loss on countback was the outcome, but Peter Hogg, Ratu Mataira, Keith Brightwell, Mike Goodison, David Bell, Brydon Te Pania, Ian Ellis, and Peter Dunstan, can be really proud of their efforts for the club. Beginning on Saturday March the 2nd at 4 p.m. we will commence Twilight Golf for beginners.

This will include some coaching, clubs available for use, and an easy 9 hole event. The cost will be $8 and this will include a light BBQ. A really fun way to learn and enjoy golf. FULL MEMBERSHIP of the Raglan Golf Club is available for only $28.75 per month, and we offer a wide range of lesser membership options that are very good value and can be paid monthly. Raglan Golf Club

Karioi Fundraiser Trek for Atea update On behalf of Atea and the Haenga-Te Wheoro Family we would like to extend a big thankyou to family and friends who have offered to help with the event on the 23rd of March. We have been very surprised at the large response to the walk from Raglan locals and further afield,

some even coming from Australia. In light of this, we are going to hold a public meeting on the 6th of March 6pm at the Raglan Golf Club. This is to initiate a register, gather emails and contacts, and to gauge the extent of walkers for the day. We will explain the course and what to expect on the day. Nutrition and fitness advisors will be there, to guide you as to fine

tuning yourselves over the last few weeks, re exercises, stretching and diet. If you are going to walk in this event, we suggest you join us and learn about the walk. Maui's Dolphin Day Whaingaroa Environment Centre ran the first Maui’s Dolphin Day in 2004, to highlight the plight of Maui’s Dolphin on the North Island's West Coast. Last year, Maui's Dolphin Day coincided with Department of Conservation releasing their estimate of 55 Maui's Dolphins left. Two years in a row, Maui's Dolphins have been spotted near Raglan around Maui's Dolphin Day. A pod of 100 other dolphins was seen hanging out with 10 Maui's Dolphins just off the bar last week! Recycled Raft Race

Fashion show participants will be creating their marine-themed garments from recycled materials given to them on the day!

Xtreme Waste has been running the raft race since 2001. Rafts have been made with everything from bathtubs to milk bottles. Some of the rafts don't make it to the finish line... Some don't even make it past the starting line!

Our guest judge for the Recycled Fashion Show will be Tarja Pabbruwe, WOW NZ Wearable Arts winner. In the morning, Tarja will be doing stiltwalking in her Water Spirit costumes... She'll provide some great inspiration for our Fashion Show entries. The designers will start off at 2pm, after the raft race, and the models will be walking the catwalk only 2 hours later!

Awards go to Best Raft, as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd over the line. Other prizes have included Best Dressed, Best Team Spirit, and Most Number of People on one raft. Thanks to Raglan Coastguard, Raglan Kayaks and Surf Lifesaving for providing safety and support.

To enter the Fashion Show or Raft Race, pre-registration is required. Numbers are limited, so get in soon!
