Wildcoast Ruapuke Horse Adventures Raglan Arts Weekend 2014 and Cabins This December sees the launch of the 2014 Raglan Arts Weekend Guide by the Raglan Community Arts Council. The Raglan Arts Weekend is the new name for the annual Raglan Arts Trail as the event now encompasses both artists’ open studios and a three day Raglan Creative Market at the Old School Arts Centre during Auckland Anniversary weekend: January 25th to 27th. The 2014 guide provides details of 27 artists exhibiting either at their studios or the Old School. Their work covers a range of media including painting, sculpture, photography, jewellery and wearable art. Artists will have a range of their work on display and available for purchase, and will be happy to discuss their thoughts and processes with you. This is an ideal time to see a wide variety of art forms, meet your favourite artists or discover new ones. On Friday 24th January there will be an opening preview event at 7pm at the Old School where you can meet the artists and view examples of their work. This will help visitors plan their weekend itinerary. Outside of this weekend artists can be contacted directly using the Arts Weekend guide details to arrange a visit. Long renowned for its arts and music as well as its surf, Raglan is a great place for a day visit, a weekend away or extended holiday with galleries, designer stores, a wide range of accommodation, cafés and alternative activities around the harbour and beaches. Copies of the guide can be found at the Raglan Information Centre, the Raglan Old School Arts centre in Stewart Street, at Raglan cafés and galleries and many other outlets throughout the Waikato and Auckland. You can check on upcoming events at www.raglanartscentre.co.nz or view participating artists’ work via www.facebook. com/raglanart

ildcoast Horse Adventures are an awesome 2 ½-3hr ride which takes you into the hills, down ridges, across rocky bottom streams, through beautiful native bush then down along the stunning Ruapuke Beach, and if you’re keen you get to have a canter too! Our horses are wonderful; we have a horse to suit your level of riding, from complete novice to the expert. Come and enjoy the dramatic landscape of Ruapuke. We have 2 studio style eco cabins set amongst our 120 acre farm surrounded by bush, birds and streams with beautiful ocean views. They are proudly run on alternative power with fresh spring water to drink and have a soak in your bath with a view. Both cabins are selfcontained with linen and towels provided. Wildcoast is locally owned and family operated.
Raglan Chronicle Review: “Wayne had expertly chosen horses to suit our ability and within minutes had given us all the information we needed to handle our horses, giving confidence to those of us who hadn’t ridden for years as well as those who had never ridden before. Our small party was soon on its way up the hillside. Experiencing this landscape from horseback is truly brilliant, fun and exciting. Riding through bush, across fields, rocky streams and steep sloping dunes, horses have a surprising ability to safely transport you across all kinds of terrain, and you quickly begin to put your trust in their sure footing and strength. Ending up down at the waters edge at Ruapuke Beach, we rode the horses into the water where they enjoyed getting sprayed by the waves. A good canter along the long black sand beach was an exhilarating way to end the trek and head us back in the direction of the farm. Wildcoast really does provide everything you need to completely unwind, relax and recharge. You will leave feeling uplifted,
energised, and already thinking of an excuse to come back for more!” Please ring Wayne or Penny on: 078250059/0274305526. www.wildcoast.co.nz. 1549 Whaanga Rd, Ruapuke Beach (opposite Ruapuke Motor Camp) Bookings essential

After years of holidaying around Raglan Stuart and Kim had built friendships here so when Kim retired from 24 years as an International Flight Attendant they decided to move. Kim was born locally so the move means she is now among her extended family who live and farm in the district. Stuart is from the Manawatu and, after training at Flockhouse, he began his farming career as a shepherd on a 3500 acre farm in Rangiwahia. When he left there 11 years later he had been managing the farm for 5 years. Stuart moved north to manage the drystock operation at Te Akau Stud, followed by the conversion from sheep to bull fattening on 850 acres in Maramarua, then on to the Stevenson Group’s drystock and dairy
farms in South Auckland. Stuart then had a complete change and joined the Police. After 10 years in the Police, Kim and Stuart started up Counties Manukau Property Care. They invested in a 150 hp McComick tractor with side mounted post rammer, hydraulic grader blade and ‘Taupo Hand’ along with a high quality wood splitter, weed eater, hedge trimmer and chainsaws. With the move to Raglan they have picked up the business and all the equipment and bought it with them. Now known as Raglan Property Maintenance, they’re keen to help out, whether it be fencing or feeding your dogs and checking your stock while you are away, supplying or splitting firewood or that extra tractor or pair of hands when needed on the farm, alternatively they can help around your section on the farm or in town; weedeating, hedge trimming spraying or any job you don’t have time for. his summer season marks the 15th anniversary of New Zealand’s original Surf School…the Raglan Surfing School. From humble beginnings operating from the back of a converted Holden ambulance, the Surf School has now been recognised as one of the Top 10 Adventure Activities in New Zealand by CNN. The Raglan Surf School operates year round from its base in the beautiful surrounds of the Karioi Outdoor Adventure Centre located in Whale Bay. The Centre offers the Surf School’s clients an opportunity to experience more than just a great time in the water - a chance of experiencing a taste of the surfing lifestyle as well. Surf lessons are offered at 9am and 2pm everyday throughout the summer season and start at the Karioi Lodge. The 3 hour lessons include water and beach safety, soft surfboard and wetsuit hire and free transportation from

Gals ‘n’ Gurnard fishing tournament GALS n GURNARD fishing tournament rolls around again. The fishing section of the Raglan Club Inc is all ready to go with the 2014 Gals n Gurnard fishing event. Profits from this year’s event will go to the Waikato Breast Cancer Trust. Support and sponsorship for the event is up 40% on last year. Briefing night is Sunday 5th of January at 7.00pm. Entry forms and the entry box are all with the friendly staff at the Bar of the Raglan Club Inc or can be downloaded from the website www.raglanclub.co.nz. Sharp hooks and fresh baits are all you need to fish anywhere in depths from 30m to 50m. Fish at 35/40m off the southern end of Ruapuke beach and off Gibson’s beach to the north of Raglan, and you will be in. Gurnard and kahawai are in the mix. There are plenty of fish workups with birds, kahawai and dolphins feeding. Snapper are still spawning. Shortly the snapper will move in closer to feed, especially after spawning. Water temperatures are around 20 degrees, which means the albacore bonito tuna will not be far away and they will be enticing the marlin in, if the kahawai workups have not already done so. Crayfish pots abound along our rocky coastline and out to the reefs. If
you have a new pot and it’s not weathered, crays will be reluctant to go in. Spray it with kerosene and spray the cray baits as well they love it. The Raglan Bar is on the leads, it breaks readily in the shallows on the southern side a long way out. Bar crossings should be made on the white sector light. Harbour fishing is all good, locals regularly seen fishing in their spots at the entrance and further up the harbour in the shallows on the high tide. There’s an abundance of yellow bellied flounder and sizeable mullet being caught by locals as we speak. Be wary of stingray in nets from now on. So skipper your boat safely, be responsible, catch only what you require and best of all have fun doing it. All the best for Christmas and New Year to you all, and may Raglan and the weather look after all our holiday makers.

The Backyard Bounty project aims to provide the Whaingaroa community with a backyard of fresh, organic and healthy food - available to everyone and all for free. So far volunteers have planted over 80 fruit trees around the Raglan township in a range of public and community spaces including road reserves, the rugby ground, schools, playgrounds and at the Poihakena Marae. The backyard bounty project aims to have 300 fruit trees in the ground next year.
Sustainable September
A packed month of workshops and events including how to make rag rugs and preserves, wild foods walks, upcycling for kids with Miss Popin Jay, Meet your Native Fish and Xtreme Waste Green Drinks.
Curtain Bank The curtain bank has provided curtains to over 20 formerly cold and drafty homes in Raglan. Properly fitted and lined curtains make a huge improvement to the energy efficiency of a home. They shut out drafts and trap warm air making homes warmer and cheaper to heat. Our curtains are generously donated by the Whaingaroa community and fit and installed by local craftspersons and funding from WEL energy.
Junior Enviroclub Every Friday lunchtime the Whaingaroa Environment Centre heads to Raglan Area School to meet our junior enviro club. Kids get the chance to learn more about the natural world and their local environment through hands on experience. Whether it’s digging through dirt to look at worms with a microscope, making seed bombs or working hard to plant and mulch over 40 new fruit trees, our enthusiastic bunch seem to love getting their hands dirty! The junior enviro club is a great way to connect with school and for kids to engage with the environment centre. It provides a fun way to foster a sustainable community.
Seed Bank The seed bank aims to create a healthy resilient community by promoting organic gardening. We sell seeds in small affordable quantities to encourage and foster a community of home gardeners. All our seeds can be saved! The long term aim of the project is to have a stock of locally grown and propogated seeds that grow well in the local Whaingaroa environment, increasing our food security and resilience.
Some Christmas wrapping paper is now made out of plastic and can’t be recycled. Bah humbug! Please don’t put plastic wrapping paper in your recycling. Be a good Christmas eco-elf and wrap your presents in reused materials like magazines, newspapers or sheet music. Then recycle them after Christmas! Visit the Raglan Mall! Kaahu’s Nest - our reuse shop! A must see for all visitors, come and check out the reuse shop at the recycling centre. It is jam packed full of all sorts of treasures; ranging from clothes, furniture, pots and pans, bric a brac, wood, compost, and even worms for your compost (they make a great Christmas gift!) – the list is endless, and not to be missed out on your list of things to do whilst on holiday. During the holiday period, the amount of recycling that is created is much more than normal. The kerbside collection truck is not able to collect large quantities of items like glass bottles, cans and cardboard in excess of the allocated two crates per household. Please bring large amounts of recycling and other reusable items to the recycling centre (for free) – 186 Te Hutewai Road.
M a u i ’s D o l p h i n D a y On March 2nd, we had the biggest Maui’s Dolphin Day and Xtreme Waste Recycled Raft race ever. Thanks to support from Sky City, WWF, and loads of local businesses. We also held our first recycled AND sea-themed fashion show. The rafts and the outfits were fun and fantastic! WWF, Forest and Bird, DOC, Earthrace, and other national and international guests were blown away by Raglan’s love for our coast, our community and our Maui’s Dolphins.
