Images from the Te Uku Roast Office gallery evening and Te Uku coffee culture Should you wish to aquire any images from this weeks Chronicle - please contact us on 825 7076 or email your request to info@raglanchronicle.co.nz Dear Sir Last week’s issue of the Chronicle contained an article about the Xtreme Waste Raft Race. The article gave the impression that the running of the Raft Race had been placed in jeopardy because of the bridge contractors’ compound. This was a little misleading as it was only that the start and finish lines for the race would have to be moved. Whilst it would be a shame if the rafts are not able to sail under the bridge, as this certainly does add to the fun of the day, we do not believe it would mean that the race had to be cancelled completely. The article also stated that Xtreme Waste runs the fun day but it needs to be made clear that the Raft Race is part of Community and Environment Day - a day which is organised and run by Raglan Community House, with input from Xtreme Waste and Whaingaroa Environment Centre. The Raft Race concludes the day and it is certainly true that the Raft Race is the sole responsibility of Xtreme Waste. Raglan Community House seeks the funding for this community event and provides the project management. It is extremely important to us that our community and, in particular, our funders are aware of the huge input into this event by the Community House. The hard work of this year’s Project Manager, Tony Agar and Assistant Project Manager, Nicci Standly, needs to be acknowledged. I also believe that the article did not make clear that Council and Raglan Community Board have been working very hard to help us find a solution to the problems posed by the contractor’s compound enclosing Kopua Reserve - from the footpath to the rear of the changing rooms and down to the beachfront area. As soon as it was discovered that there would be a problem, the Council and Raglan Community Board met with the contractors to try and find a resolution. Council also immediately undertook to provide us with a power outlet if the stage area for the event had to be moved because of the compound. Raglan Community House is very grateful to Council and to Raglan Community Board for their support of this great community event and for their determination to try and find a solution that works for everyone. Chrissy Hodkinson, Raglan Community House .......................................................................................more letters page 11 Editor’s note: Our article made clear from the outset that the raft race had now been salvaged. The Chronicle ran its story after raft race co-ordinator Lindsey Turner wrote in expressing fears the contractors’ compound might jeopardise this hugely popular annual fun race. The paper talked with a number of parties, including Tony Agar from the Community House, in its attempt to provide a balanced report of the issue. We believe one of a newspaper’s main roles is to reflect community opinion and concerns, and not to simply gloss over things or to be a PR mouthpiece for the organisers.

Raglan set for huge month Raglan’s throbbing over the next month to the sound of everything from rumbling Harleys and classic American V8s to rock‘n’roll and the town’s own legendary blues band.

Art-lovers too get a look in from this Saturday with a three-day art crawl – capitalising on the expected Auckland Anniversary Weekend crowds – designed to give 36 local artists exposure in Raglan’s first ever Open Studio Weekend. It’s a chance to “reaffirm Raglan as an art destination”, says co-ordinator and artist Amanda Watson. The project – backed by the Old School Arts Centre – has been eight months in the making, she adds, and marketed nationally. People can pick up an art trail guide online or in town and take their time browsing in potters’, painters’ photographers’ and sculptors’ studios from Waitetuna to Whale Bay. No sooner does the art trail wrap up than the latest Mudshark Monday kicks in at the Harbour View Hotel, promising a good dose of the blues with which Raglan was once synonymous along with some good old “shake, rattle and roll”. This year’s line-up brings together four of the old Mudsharks regulars – Sid Limbert, now of Picton, ex Narc’s keyboardist Liam Ryan, these days living in Nelson, the now Auckland-based former Pink Flamingos frontman Dave McArtney and longtime Raglan muso and producer Dave Maybee. All played at the Harbour View every second Monday throughout the ‘80s. Joining them for the “Sharx in the Garden” concert will be Sid’s Raglan-based son Freddie, who first played for the Mudsharks at the age of eight, special guests Maurice “Curly” Taylor and ex Dragon/Mandrake/Mods drummer Neil Reynolds, and regular guests Peter Skandera and Gary Verberne (ex guitarist with Shona

Lang, DD Smash and When The Cats Are Away). The Mudsharks were a legend around the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and even Auckland in their prime, and became a national identity when the Raglan by the Sea doco, which spawned the Heartland series, screened on TV way back, capturing the essence of the town.

WHAT’S ON WHEN JAN 29-31– Open Studio Weekend, 10am-2pm each day. See art trail guide for details. JAN 31– Mudshark Monday, Raglan Harbour View Hotel, 8.30-11.30pm. Tickets $20 (door-sales only). FEB 5 – Kawhia Kai Festival, Omiti Park from 9am. Entry $5, family concession $15 (2 adults, 4 chn). FEB 5-6 – Boardies & Bikinis, Ruapuke Campground. Tickets $45 (includes camping). FEB 13 – Classic Car & Rock’n’Roll Festival, Bow Street, 9am-3pm. FEB 18-19 – 21st NZ National HOG Rally, Kopua Domain soccer fields. Hard on the heels of Auckland Anniversary Weekend comes Waitangi Weekend with Tractor FM’s two-day Boardies & Bikinis summer festival at Ruapuke campground, attracting local and international talent. It’s billed as a safe family festival “where the kids can have fun and adults can boogie till dawn”. Also at Waitangi Weekend, but slightly further south, is the annual Kawhia Kai Festival which Lonely Planet last year listed as one of its top 10 indigenous events for overseas visitors and tourists, and which draws more than 10,000 to the town.

Raglan band Zionhill features in this year’s line-up of entertainment along with kapahaka groups, weavers and wood carvers to celebrate traditional and contemporary Maori culture. The following weekend brings Raglan’s fourth annual Classic Car & Rock’n’Roll Festival to town. “All we’re depending on is the weather,” says event co-ordinator Linda Cole. She’s expecting about 200 classic cars to go on show downtown in this year’s event, with entries from as far away as Auckland and Waiheke Island. The previous years’ Saturday night drive-in movie has been replaced this time round, she adds, with a big hop at the Raglan Club, where raffles and a “best dressed” competition will be run to add to the fun in the lead-up to Sunday’s street display. Also running in conjunction with the festival will be the Miss Raglan and Mr Muscle contests, and a town hall road safety production by the Funky Monkeys. Finally, in mid-February, more than 1000 Harley owners head to Raglan on their bikes for the 21st NZ National HOG Rally, with almost every available bedspace in town already booked out that weekend. The Harley Owners Group will be based for two days at Kopua Domain’s soccer fields where local bands, vendors and activities will also be showcased. And the rally’s iconic Thunder Run will be led by police along the length of Marine Parade, providing a real spectacle for locals who flock to see the bikers en masse. There’ll also be a Show ‘n’ Shine featuring all the bikes parked in the town centre – where again the public gets the chance to be involved with a rally attracting riders not only from New Zealand but also from Australia, America, Europe and Asia. Raglan councillor Clint Baddeley has billed it as “the biggest event we’ll ever have here”, and one of the rally co-ordinators, Kim Williams, told the Chronicle this week it “promises to be one of the best”. Dedicated Raglan osteo lost in Te Uku car crash “We’re totally shocked and devastated,” said a spokeswoman at Karioi Osteopaths where Julia had worked recently for about 18 months. “She was a very dedicated, passionate and talented osteopath.” Julia, 29, who was originally from France but had lived in Raglan for about four years, leaves behind her partner of the same age and their four-month-old baby girl, Kaya. An “extraordinary soul” was how her colleagues remembered her this week as they offered condolences to family and friends. Julia was killed on her way to work at her current job – Mel’s Clinic in Dinsdale – when her Ford Escort stationwagon apparently crossed the centreline just before

Ohautira Road, hit a barrier on the opposite side of the highway and bounced back into the path of oncoming traffic , says Sergeant Rob Pierce of Raglan police. Her car collided with the Mitsubishi sedan of locals Rangimarie Gray – who runs Raglan Trust Hospital & Rest Home – and Robert Carter, who were on the way to work in Raglan from their home in Waingaro. Police say Julia died at the scene, while the seriously injured couple were cut from their car by firefighters and taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance. Police blocked the road to Raglan from Hamilton, near Te Uku, for two hours after the 8.40am Monday accident. The accident location also meant that normal diversions through Old Mountain Road and Waingaro could not be used. The crash is still under investigation by the Serious Crash Unit.

A funeral for the family will be held this Saturday. At 6.30pm the following Tuesday (1st Feb) people are invited to the Wainui Reserve carpark. Those attending are Julia Borgoo are encouraged to wear colour and bring a flower from their garden. New course delivers cooking tips for the elderly Raglan’s elderly won’t miss out on the ‘health food revolution’ sweeping the country with a FREE Nutrition and Wellness course beginning next week. The Old School Arts Centre will be the venue for the four-week course which will be run by Age Concern education trainer Margrit Neukomm with help from well known Hamilton chef Clive Anderson. Margrit says research shows that 50 percent of seniors are at risk of malnutrition. The course helps people who might be cooking for themselves and want to understand more about their changing nutritional needs and reveals easy and cheap ways of cooking for one. Previous course participants have said “The best part is we have to eat whatever we cook, so there is a lot of free food going about, and who knows you may meet a couple of friends that you can share a meal with now and again”. The course also includes an exercise programme delivered by 62 year-old Max Weinberg from Sport Waikato, who will show groups easy exercise circuits they can do at home. The course runs weekly from Tuesday 122 February 10.00am -12 noon. To register a place please phone Nicci or Chrissy at Raglan Community House 825 8142 or Age Concern Hamilton 07 838 2266

Bright new future for Roast Office The Cartoon Moon by Mike Cooke seemed a serendipitous start to what is sure to become a welcome arena for exhibiting artists at the newly opened Te Uku Roast Office; formerly the Te Uku Post Office until its closure in 1988. Ernest C. Moon was the very first postmaster of Te Uku in 1894 and held the position for 30 odd years – whilst not remarkable in itself – the coincidence of his name and that of the inaugural exhibition is. Furthermore Ernest C. Moon was born unable to walk and without the use of his hands. He was an intellect passionate about

the arts and known for his watercolour paintings, some of which are now overseas. Not one to be set back by a disability, he painted with his feet. The Te Uku Roast Office is drive-by coffee, on your way over or back from the hill. Opened for a month now, the renovations took ten weeks from whoa to go. The integrity of the building remains with minimal alterations to the original Post Office built in 1924, however it is now coffee that is dispensed rather then stamps. The gallery is at home in the former postal accommodation that was

An integrated family health centre could be on the cards as Raglan Hospital Charitable Trust – debt-free for the first time in 20-odd years – now heads in a new direction. But while trust chairman Peter Storey says it’s an “exciting” possibility, the trust is still looking for a headsup from the community on which route it should go down. The family health centre suggestion – which Peter stresses is just one of many possibilities – comes at a time when West Coast Health is considering relocating in the next two to five years. West Coast Health is looking for other health providers to invest in a purpose-built centre should a feasibility study, now in the initial stages, prove positive. “We’re at a bit of a crossroads as to where to from here,” Peter admits. “We can expand and redevelop (Raglan Trust Hospital & Rest Home) or go in a different direction … we’re looking for a lead from the community.” Peter concedes it would be good to use what’s there in terms of infrastructure on the prime piece of land in Manukau Road overlooking the harbour. Though the property is not well used economically, he adds, the hospital and rest home facility could be partially demolished and then expanded to make it more viable. Alternatively the trust could look at selling the facility and using the money to assist with development of a health centre or something else, he says. “It would be good use of the money to set something up for a wider cross-section of the community.” Local researcher Fiona Edwards, involved in the feasibility study, says the concept of a family health centre is not just about a building but improving health outcomes for patients. It would ideally integrate a “multidisciplinary team” providing services such as mental health and palliative care, plus an accredited staff training facility linked to universities and polytechnics. It would possibly also incorporate an area for research into rural health issues affecting Raglan residents, she adds. However West Coast Health Clinic’s Dr Fiona Bolden this week downplayed any possible link with the current hospital and resthome, telling the Chronicle “our development of an integrated family health centre has nothing to do with Raglan Hospital Trust at this stage … we still haven’t even completed a feasibility study.” Peter says the trust was established two decades ago to buy the premises and land off the Hospital Board when its maternity hospital was no longer needed in Raglan. The trust bought it for the elderly in Raglan, he explains, and has finally paid back the loan. It is now running well as a “stand-alone” unit, he adds, having focused in recent years on completing and selling off units below the hospital, in a cul-de-sac just off Violet Street, that were originally to have been a retirement village. Meanwhile Peter – until late last year Raglan Community Board chairman – will continue as the board’s representative on the hospital trust despite no longer being an elected member. Peter did not contest last year’s elections, but the board has agreed to the trust’s request he continue as chairman for reasons of continuity and his involvement with key projects. Edith Symes

Scholarship for young artists – still time to apply If you are a resident of Raglan or the Whaingaroa region, and are about to launch yourself into study for an arts qualification read on……. The Raglan Community Arts Council has much pleasure in announcing that a scholarship of $1000 will once again be awarded to a young person resident in the area who intends to go on to tertiary study in the arts this year. The aim of the award is to encourage school leavers who aim to study any

of a wide range of arts and design. The scholarship has been made possible through the generosity of those involved with the successful Raglan Festivals of Art held in recent years. The deadline for applications has been extended to 13 February 2011 to accommodate those who may have been away from home over the holidays. Short-listed applicants will be interviewed after that date. Lennie Galloway, last year’s winner of the scholarship, says the

scholarship was definitely worthwhile for her. Going into her first year of student life and flatting in Auckland meant a lot of expenses, and she used some of the scholarship money to pay for the materials required for her courses at the Film and TV School. It also enabled her to move to Christchurch to take up her first job working on the Erin Simpson show as the Art Department coordinator. “The award gave me confidence about my ability as an artist, which gave me a boost for going into a competitive film school.”

Lennie advises other aspiring artists to apply; apart from the obvious financial incentives, she points out it looks good on a CV! Young people between 16 and 20 yrs wishing to apply for the scholarship can get a copy of the criteria and application form from the Information Centre in town or Old School Arts Centre (825 0023, or email info@ raglanartscentre.co.nz). To find out more about the scholarship, contact Ruth Port on 825 7267.

Bone Carving Workshop for Teens

Raglan Bone Carving Studio is offering a set of three bone carving workshops to Whaingaroa, teenagers, starting in the first week of February.

Tutor Rangi Wills, a Maori bone carving artist, is looking for enthusiastic young people with hidden talents to join the workshops, each of which will comprise

12 hours of tuition over a 2 day period in small classes of five. The students will learn about all aspects of carving bone, including safety, preparation of materials and cord making. They will start with a large cow bone, and finish up with an attractive pendant to take home, says Rangi. No previous experience is necessary. Rangi Wills learnt to

carve as a teenager during the 1980’s, taught by carver Bill Rawhiti, who was running a two-year apprenticeship in Auckland for mostly troubled Maori youth, and has been carving ever since, selling his work through outlets such as Te Papa and the Auckland Museum. Rangi has Tainui roots, his home Marae being Te Awa Marahi in Port Waikato. He and his partner Lucretia Perkins came to

Raglan with their family in 2008, and have been setting up their studio over the past 5 months. “An open day for the community is planned for 5 March,” says Rangi, “to promote what we do within our studio.” The studio will be offering various workshops and other opportunities for those who would like to learn or develop their skills in bone carving or just have

Lennie outside the Christchurch Art Galler y

go at making a single item. The programme for youth targets 13-19 year olds, and each workshop will run from 9am – 3pm. Dates for the 3 workshops are 5-6 February, 12-13 February and 19-20 February. Venue is the spacious new Bone Carving Studio at 6 Snowden Placed, Raglan. Cost for a 2-day workshop is just $60 per student, the programme having been supported

by funding from Creative Communities NZ. Booking is essential for the five places in each workshop - contact the Old School Arts Centre 825 0023, or info@ raglanartscentre.co.nz. For further information about the programme, you can call Rangi on 825 7147. Judith Collins

A sultry voice with razor sharp wit and a stage show to match, Ladi6 is New Zealand’s leading hip-hop soul artist and in her own right, an emerging international star. Highly decorated at home and abroad, Ladi6’s career, beginning with seminal all-girl crew Sheelahroc, is embossed with industry awards, considered critical acclaim, countless support slots alongside a who’s who of respected local and international music icons and tellingly, gold certified New Zealand sales of her 2008 debut long player Time IS Not Much (now available internationally via BBE Records). And having completed over sixty tour dates across Europe and the UK during the second and third quarters of 2010, with a view to return in 2011, she can now count amongst her friends and contemporaries Mayer Hawthorne, Masta Ace and Gil Scott-Heron. Having developed her lyrically introspective smoky soul soundworld

over years of consistent touring and considered features alongside an Antipodean elite including the likes of 50HZ, Shapeshifter, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Scribe amongst others, while Time Is Not Much represented a lucid summary of her career to date, her new album The Liberation Of… is a game changer. Recorded over two months in Berlin with production duties shared between her producer Parks and German beat auteur Sepalot, The Liberation Of… represents a logical continuation of the Ladi6 sound – deeper, denser and immaculately considered in sound and message. WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN Ladi6 plays the YOT Club this Saturday. We have 4 copies of Ladi6’s latest album to giveaway. To be in with a chance to win a copy simply go to: www.raglan.net.nz and click of ‘Free Stuff’ on the home page and follow the instructions on the ‘Free Stuff’ page. Winners will be notified on Tuesday 8th February. 1 entry per person.

As many of you may be aware, for every book sold at the launch I was donating $5 to Harbour Care to help with the fantastic work they do to try and ensure a clean bright future for Whaingaroa Harbour. The wonderful reception the book received meant that in just six days, seventy three copies of the book sold - meaning $365 was raised for Harbour Care. If you missed the launch, both the book and exhibition can be seen and purchased at ‘Show Off Aotearoa’ in Bow Street until 20th February. The book can also be purchased at ‘Kanuka Design Gallery’ and ‘The Raglan Book Shop’. Once again thanks to you all. Trevor Penfold.

Lawn Bowls fundraising night Our Annual Surf LifeSaving Fundraising night was unfortunately a rather dampish evening, but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of those present to join in with this very worth while event. Thirty nine players sorted themselves into teams of three with names aptly applied... The Cross Boys, Happy Team, Whatever, Rag Tags, Stuffed if I Know, Biddy Boys, Young Guns, Team 1, The Gadz, No Rudes, Gardeners, and Nobodys. Two games (shortened due to the rain) were played very competitively with heaps of fun & laughter...one team had absolutely no bowls left on the rink after having played one particular end!!!! But that didn’t deter them, they got straight back into it with renewed enthusiasm. Good on you, team. A very welcome warm BBQ was shared, followed by the much awaited auction of assorted items donated by many community minded people and businesses. Special thanks to Mr Ian Gundeson, our auctioneer, who

travelled from New Plymouth to help out. The Surf Life-Saving Club wish to extend their gratitude and special thanks to the following businesses and the many pubic members for their contribution of goods and services for this very worth-while cause: Raglan Four Square Harbourview Hotel Jo’s Take Aways Frocking Gorgeous Scintilla Zinnia Raglan Video Shop Raglan Surf Co Skoot Black Sands Licensed Cafe The Herbal Dispensary Raglan Pharmacy Raglan Book & Gift Shop GN & BS Richards Right Up My Alley Kanuka Raglan Roast Coffee Extreme Waste Sayers’ Landscaping Supplies DHL Couriers Karioi Lodge/Sunset Cruise

Freddy Limbert/Raglan Lawns Linda Holmes Photography Alice Robertson and Shane &and Kathy Gold

Proceeds from the entries, meals, the auction and donations at the bar, all go to the Surf Life Saving Club. With an additional donation from the Raglan Club Inc a total of around $1800 was raised. THANK YOU ALL SOOO MUCH. Guess what? ‘Friar Tuck’ turned up again this year! I don’t think it would be the same if he didn’t, Huh ! but he didn’t raise as much this year as he did last year. Perhaps he may show up again next year and remedy this! A REMINDER: Corner to Corner Bowls restarts this Thursday 27th January 5.45pm, bring a friend and come have a try...tis fun bowls. Business House Bowls restarts on 15th February. Meantime... Happy bowling Eileen Stephens.

Letters.....continued from page 2 A letter from a road safety engineers perspective.. Another tragedy on our road, another loss of a life, another family in mourning, another family without a parent, a sibling , a loved one. These last few days have been a tragic time on the roads, particularly in the Waikato six deaths - 30 major crashes in less than in 24 hours. It is a news story that is repeated daily particularly in poor weather and we are becoming immune until the sting from one of these tragedies affects us, when one of our own is involved or someone we know. Whilst driving on my daily commute to and from Hamilton on SH23, I witness both dangerous and careless disregard for life on almost every daily trip. Where speed, aggression (male and female) and impatience being the most prominent part of some driver behaviour. We have all witnessed it, but Why? What is it in human nature that propels some people headlong into danger, putting both their own and others lives in grave danger. Where texting while driving, tailgating, overtaking on the inside, speeding in poor weather conditions and people racing, are all part of a daily experience on the road. If you are one of those people reading this now, I’m sure you will justify your actions and behaviour.. “some people don’t know how to drive”, “I’m a better driver”, ”I know the road”, “too many foreigners!”, “I can control my car and text at the same time” , “I’m late for work”. Let’s just point out a couple of things whilst your hurtle headlong at break neck speed into oblivion… SH23 is not a forgiving road to drive at speeds over the speed limit and for 40% of the road it is physically impossible to drive at 100 kph and there is a big mountain to negotiate. The difference in time to get to Hamilton between driving at 90kph and driving at 110 kph in the parts

where it is possible to reach these speeds, makes a difference of less than 5 minutes in your journey and only 2.2 minutes for speeds between 90 kph and 100kph. What the hell is wrong with you people, get a grip on reality, you are complete morons if you believe that you won’t be involved in some tragic incident if you continue to drive this way, it’s just a matter of time and it’s also likely that others will suffer as a result, other drivers, yours and their families, Just think about it, is it worth it for just a couple of minutes? Value your life, value the life of others, drive to the conditions, take it easy and live. Gareth Bellamy, Raglan Dear Editor, I believe there was a wharf meeting held for ‘stake holders’ – it was poorly advertised as so many interested parties were not present. We are very disappointed that council has now changed its mind after approving the design of a similar size & character to the original 1920’s wharf – and are now looking at a four gable option which is not the popular or approved choice – this is an important building for the whole community who as rate payers all have a stake in it. Therefore consultation should be with the wider community. We need to keep this particular area as a destination that has real nautical character whilst still providing a construction that fills the need of fisheries and other associated businesses. Council please perform your public duty and consult with the wider community. Too often seaside towns such as Raglan have been spoilt because councils have allowed developers and other self interested parties to destroy the charm & character which has developed over decades from the natural development based

on the needs of the community as a whole. Let’s keep our seaside village as an iconic template! Rosie Worsp, Te Akau and Raglan To the editor, So often these days we hear that the true meaning of Christmas has been lost in commercialism. This Christmas, however, the Raglan Community showed that it has not lost the Christmas spirit at all; indeed it showed its caring, generous side to all those people who attended the Community Christmas Dinner at the Raglan Town Hall. As one of the organizers and on behalf of Colin, Rhonda and Dave, I would like to pass on our thanks to all those people who contributed toward the success of the Community Christmas Dinner. My job was made very easy by people making offers once they were told what we were planning. The Raglan businesses gave products or food, the town’s people gave food or presents, some Hamilton businesses, Forlongs and 4 Guys Autobarn gave food, Sue from Hidden Valley Retreat was the first to step up and offered a whole lamb. A Bit of a Do from Hamilton supplied the linen. The list of kind generous people is endless, Colin and Rhonda had a team of helpers at their house helping to prepare food, others turned up on the day and helped setup, wash dishes and clean up afterwards. Not forgetting the awesome Christmas Tree and the two Santas. Thank you so much to you all. Hopefully, our example will be picked up and will spread to other towns next Christmas. What a great community minded town we live in. Colin and Rhonda Chung, Dave Maybee and Sue Oliver, Raglan

Councillor’s Column The start of a new year is upon us and it is clearly going to be a busy one at Council. May I first record my congratulations on the achievement of Colin and Rhonda Chung, Sue Oliver, Dave Maybee and all the other unselfish people who put the true Christmas spirit into action in Raglan and provided a fantastic Christmas Day dinner with top quality entertainment and the best of company at Christmas time. Well done all of you. Council’s meeting schedule proper starts at the beginning of February but prior to that there are a number of issues that are ongoing. Under the Local Government Act Council is reviewing its community outcomes and with the recent inclusion of part of Franklin it is a timely activity. There are six outcomes that will be reviewed: − Accessible Waikato Access to infrastructure, transport and technology − Green Waikato Protecting natural resources − Sustainable Waikato A district where growth is effectively managed − Thriving Waikato A district that prides itself on economic excellence where heritage and culture are protected − Healthy Waikato A district with services and activities that promote a healthy community. − Safe Waikato A district where people feel safe and supported within their community A meeting on 25th January at Blacksand will provide an opportunity to discuss these matters bearing in mind that similar meetings all over the Waikato District will contribute to the final outcome. Also coming up is a review of the Walking and Cycling strategy. More on this later. Over the holiday period Council has been reminding us all of the Dog Bylaws – in particular the “no dog” rule in the CBD. There has been past criticism that the bylaw has not been enforced – this has been raised with staff responsible. As a matter of interest there are 342 registered dogs in Raglan plus 1338 in the rural ward of Whaingaroa. Most of those dog owners are responsible people who recognise that they are fortunate to have a wide range of excellent “dogs okay” areas around Raglan (including the beaches)to exercise their pooches. It only takes a few people to make a problem in the main street with dogs challenging each other and fouling on the footpaths. This behavior is just not acceptable when there are so many other alternative areas. I would like to remind folk to put 27th March in their diaries as this is the day Meridian will be having an open day at the Wind Farm. Just before Christmas I had the chance to visit the Wind Farm with Ngati Mahanga representatives and I can recommend this tour to everyone. It is a great experience with sensational views and an insight into the technology at work in this major project. There will be more details closer to the time about the Open Day. A couple of major events coming up are: − The Raglan Classic Cars and Rock n Roll day will be with us again on 13th February. − The following weekend is the Harley Davidson Owners’ Rally which will be based at Kopua Domain. This will be the biggest even that Raglan has ever hosted. Can’t wait. If you wish to talk to me about Council issues please contact me through the Council office 825 8129 or on my mobile 0211553778. You can also listen for news updates on my radio show on Sunday mornings on 98.1 Raglan Community Radio. Let’s all have a great year!

My Big Day Out 2011

Music reporter Lucy Cioffi and roving

When the Raglan Chronicle asked me to cover one of New Zealand’s largest festivals - Auckland’s Big Day Out (BDO) 2011, I couldn’t resist. Along with thousands of music lovers, I was prepared for one of the most diverse line-ups ever in its 16-year history. With eight zones and over eighty different acts ranging from camp metal heads Rammstein to alternative rock band Primal Scream, the only problem I faced was choosing which bands to see. Here are the highlights of my BDO 2011… FREAKIEST BAND – Coming straight out of Cape Town to BDO, South African three piece hip hop act Die Antwoord left me strangely surprised with their fresh and futuristic rap. Anyone who calls themselves a Ninja and raps about Ninja’s being big in Japan has to be completely off the Richter!

The androgynous rapper Yo-Landi looked and sounded like she had just stepped off the set of The Exorcist bogling her way back to earth in a silk dressing gown. Their opening song Enter the Ninja has the most annoyingly catchy chorus. BEST STAGE – If you like throwing shapes at a festival, the boiler room had the best ninja Dougal Greer dance atmosphere by far. Essentially a giant tent with open sides, it held some super-hot bands such as Kids of 88, Ratatat, Crystal Castles, CSS, LCD Soundsystem and M.I.A. The cheeky Lovefoxxx from Brazilian electro-pop band CSS got so hot she had to strip to her hot pants. BEST BANDS – Despite the small crowd and the rain, Aussie soulful jazz-pop singer Sia gave a stunning performance on the outdoor Converse Essential Stage. Dressed in a life sized black and white cardboard box, this is a girl who doesn’t take herself too seriously and she was more than happy to interact with the intimate crowd. She sang a selection of crowd pleasers including Buttons and Soon We’ll Be Found. Later on the same stage, American band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros were upbeat and energetic. With nine band members sharing the same stage they ran a tight ship, saving their best for last, Home left everyone wanting more. Aussie Jam band John Butler Trio is a live act not to be missed; playing the massive blue stage to a smaller crowd was one of my highlights especially John Butler’s solo instrumental Ocean. Flying straight from LA to Raglan, Californian Indie rock band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (ESMZ) spent a few days chilling at a remote location near Whale Bay overlooking Indicators before playing at the Big Day Out 2011 festival in Auckland. They were more than happy for me to interview them at their BBQ held by local marine consultancy firm ASR. Here are a few interesting things I found out about the unpretentious ten piece band: Female vocalist Jade Castrino mentioned that ESMZ don’t play to a set list and instead look at each other for cues and prefer to let the mood and audience dictate a set. If you are lucky enough to see ESMZ perform live you will see how much fun they have on stage which seems

to be attributed to a band founded on friendship and a passion for music. After the success of their first album Up from Below which features their hit song Home, ESMZ are working on their sophomore album and plan to do some recording in Louisiana. When asked about their thoughts on Raglan ESMZ said that they find it very special and has inspired new material. Finally, ESMZ were really disappointed to miss out on Tractor FM’s Boardies and Bikinis Festival which takes place next weekend at the Ruapuke Motor camp, but agreed they would play next year if they return to Raglan. ‘Graffito’ photographic showcase returns to Raglan this week

Raglan hosts a new exhibition this week at Blacksand Cafe. Russ Adams, a British born photographer who has been living in Raglan for over a year, exhibits a photographic collection of graffiti from all over the world. Russ’s interest in documenting original street art began in East London where British graffiti artist Banksy’s work was cropping up all over the city in various hard to reach places. Russ’s travels around Europe, Japan, South America and Australia have taken him to many cities where he has gone in search of striking street-art masterpieces which might otherwise go unseen, “A lot of pieces I have come across have been tucked away down side streets and back alleys where not a lot of people go”. Some of Russ’s favourite finds were in Valparaiso, Chile, which he describes as a ‘stunningly beautiful city’. The styles of artwork Russ has captured are hugely varied. From bold, spray can stencil work with high contrast, to pieces based on traditional and cultural symbolism using hand painted methods. Having exhibited in Raglan before, Russ was stoked to have the opportunity to adorn the walls of Blacksand once again. Russ has also exhibited in Gisborne and has plans to show his photography in Auckland in the near future. All are reproduced in the form of high quality prints on canvas, and are for sale and on show at Blacksand until 9 February. Gemma Chalmers

12 RAGLAN Chronicle

A Raglan Rumination by Albert Einsteinlager Greetings good people of Raglan. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water here is Albert with his shark infested musings. I hope you all had a relaxing break and are ready to tackle 011 with the vim and vigour it deserves. Speaking of the festive season, I only took my Xmas tree down the other day. I know, extremely bad luck. Oh well. But it struck me that the humble Xmas tree symbolises the yawning gap between the male and female phsyches.

Albert spotted a lovely tree growing on his property. A little unruly and a lot ragged but still a thing of beauty. Nothing like the highly manicured trees you buy from the man. With a little help from my trusty son we lug the beast inside and somehow manage to stand him up. Well, what a magnificent thing it was. All lopsided and Doctor Seus. Being too tall it’s top part was squashed over and covered part of the ceiling. The room was instantly filled with pine needles and scent. We loved our tree. Having completed this very manly

task, the young fella and I settle down for a nice cold beer and lemonade. Our reverie was interrupted by er indoors returning laden with crackers and cake. The boys beam with pride. “What ja reckon Mum? An ominous silence ensues. “It’s not even, it’s too big and where is the angel going to sit as the top of the tree is pointing at the ground. All valid points but doesn’t dent our enthusiasm. “No worries she’ll look beaut with a few decorations The boys ransack the cupboard

looking for the box of decorations. Once found we proceed to adorn the tree in under 3 minutes. “Stop the clock. A new Einsteinger record. “What the hell? Mum has now returned having cooked the feast, wrapped the presents and mown the lawns. “Where is the snow on the top? Good point we note. We grab handfuls of cotton wool and biff them at the tree with gay abandon. The wife lifts her eyes to the heavens. We laugh. Ho ho ho. Merry Christmas.
