Celebrating a successful Raglan Arts Weekend at an impromptu gathering of organisers and exhibitors last Monday afternoon were (standing, from left) Susanne Prinz, Richard Gemmell and Jane Galloway and (sitting, from left) host Maureen Soanes, Jean Carbon, Jillian Lankshear, Lois Brooks, Merren Goodison, Jacqueline Anderson and Rodger Gallagher.

A

core  group  of  exhibitors  and  organisers  came  together  at  an  impromptu  gathering  on  Monday  to  toast  what  several  were  describing  as  the  best  Raglan  Arts  Weekend  ever  â€“  one  helped  along  by  a  VWURQJ VRFLDO PHGLD SURÂżOH WKLV time  around. Acrylic  painter  Lois  Brooks,  who  was  among  those  having  a  celebratory  drink  at  Ken  and  Maureen  Soanes’  â€œBlue  Gablesâ€?  B  &  B  high  on  Government  Road,   told  the  Chronicle  she  had  85,  70  and  40  visitors  to  her  nearby  studio  over  the  three  days  of  Auckland  Anniversary  Weekend. Meanwhile  painter/designer  Jane  Galloway,  who  also  came  along  to  celebrate,  said  Palm  Prints  studio  in  Raglan  West  â€“  which  exhibits  work  by  herself,  Stuart  MacKenzie  and  Julian  Godfery  â€“  attracted  450  visitors  all  up. Jane  said  having  eftpos  facilities  RQ VLWH GHÂżQLWHO\ FRQWULEXWHG WR ÂłJUHDW salesâ€?,  describing  the  weekend  event  DV FHUWDLQO\ ZRUWKZKLOH ÂżQDQFLDOO\ IRU the  trio.  People  spent  twice  as  much  as  last  time,  she  reckons,  when  350  visited  their  studio. Jane  and  her  photographer  partner  Stuart  said  they’d  spent  hundreds  of  hours  work  on  meetings  and  advertising  leading  up  to  this  year’s  event,  and  that  didn’t  count  all  the  time  spent  getting  their  own  exhibits  ready  for  display.  But  it  more  than  paid  off,  especially  the  time  Stuart  put  into  organising  artist  SURÂżOHV DQG SLFWXUHV RQ )DFHERRN IRU this  year’s  event. That  allowed  people  to  plan  their  own  arts  weekend,  explained  Jane.  The  site  was  active,  she  said,  with  the  number  of  â€œlikesâ€?  spiralling  as  the  weekend  approached. Raglan  Community  Arts  Council  chair  Rodger  Gallagher  â€“   who  made  the  successful  grant  application  through Â

Waikato  District  Council’s  Creative  Communities  scheme  for  the  bulk  of  funding  to  run  the  $5000  event  â€“  agreed  ZLWK -DQH WKDW D VRFLDO PHGLD SURÂżOH was  the  way  to  go  to  keep  promotional  costs  down. “We’ve  got  something  [a  successful  formula]  we  can  repeat  now,â€?  he  said. :KLOH WKLV ZDV WKH ÂżIWK VXFK HYHQW to  be  run  Rodger  admitted  the  previous  two  arts  weekends,  while  successful,  KDG QRW EHHQ VXVWDLQDEOH ÂżQDQFLDOO\ But  this  year’s  event  had  not  only  made  the  exhibitors  happy  â€“  with  lots  of  art  being  sold  â€“  but  had  also  run  â€œat  a  fairly  low  cost  basis  compared  to  the  pastâ€?. That  was  achieved  by  keeping  the  brochure  format  simple  and  having  just  two  local  sponsors  â€“  Tony  Sly  Pottery  and  Kopua  Holiday  Park.  The  30-odd  artists  involved  were  also  asked  for  $100  to  participate,  which  was  double  the  fee  of  previous  years.  Rodger  was  delighted  too  at  the  ³YHU\ VXFFHVVIXO´ )ULGD\ QLJKW RSHQLQJ function  at  the  Old  School  in  Stewart  Street,  which  attracted  100  or  so  artists  and  supporters  because  it  was  open  to  WKH SXEOLF IRU WKH ÂżUVW WLPH It  was  probably  one  of  the  biggest  opening  nights  the  Old  School  has  seen  as  an  arts  centre,  he  said. Old  School  arts  facilitator  Jacqueline  Anderson,  who  was  busy  most  of  the  weekend  with  stallholders  at  the  complementary  market  run  out  the  back  of  the  building,  was  grateful  the  weather  was  â€œkindâ€?  for  the  event.  â€œTruckloads  of  people  all  day  kept  coming  through  [the  Old  School],â€?  she  enthused,  and  there  was  hardly  a  brochure  to  be  found  â€“  out  of  the  5000  printed  â€“  by  the  end  of  the  weekend. Six  artists  exhibited  inside  the  Old  School  during  the  weekend,  while  others  worked  and  sold  from  the  community  Clay  Shed  behind.  Clay  artist  Susanne  Prinz  told  those  at  Monday  afternoon’s  gathering  that  even  a  motorcycle  club  from  Taranaki Â

came  to  the  event.  â€œThey  couldn’t  take  any  SRWWHU\ KRPH EXW , VROG WKHP VRPH UDIĂ€H WLFNHWV ´ she  revealed.    Photographer  Richard  Gemmell  was  a  new  exhibitor  this  year,  selling  six  of  his  â€œeight  or  nineâ€?  works  of  art  on  show  at  the  Old  School.  He  reckoned  the  positive  feedback  from  the  buying  SXEOLF KDG ERRVWHG KLV FRQÂżGHQFH DQG ZDV DOUHDG\ talking  on  Monday  about  returning  next  year. Miranda  Caird,  an  old  hand  at  Raglan  Arts  Weekends,  had  something  to  suit  every  pocket  at  her  small  Whale  Bay  home  studio.  Besides  offering  prints  and  originals  she  went  all  out  with  â€œmerchandisingâ€?  â€“  displaying  her  artwork  on  everything  from  postcards  and  fridge  magnets  to  cushion  covers  and  cellphone  cases. Rodger  singled  out  her  marketing  approach  for  special  mention,  saying  it  allowed  her  work  to  â€œappeal  to  all  ends  of  the  marketâ€?. There  was  also  praise  â€“  from  Jacqueline  Anderson  â€“  for  the  effort  put  in  by  carver  Aaron  Kereopa,  who  turns  the  foam  â€˜blanks’  or  inners  RI VXUIERDUGV LQWR ZRUNV RI DUW DW KLV IDU Ă€XQJ 7H Mata  studio.  â€œHe  started  with  his  rubbishy  old  surfboards  and  took  them  [arts  weekend  visitors  who  made  it  out  to  Te  Mata]  through  the  whole  process  using  two  Stanley  knives  bought  from  The  Warehouse,â€?  she  said. Panel  and  paint  artist  Chris  Meek  told  the  Chronicle  it  was  unbelievable  the  â€œtons  of  peopleâ€?  through  his  gallery  in  Cross  Street.  â€œIt  was  a  huge  success.â€? Good communications vital, says Coastguard after near-tragedy

R

aglan  Coastguard  president  Wally  Hawken  is  in  little  doubt  only  a  chance  sighting  of  a  stricken  boat  near  Jacksons  Reef  last  week  prevented  a  tragic  outcome  â€“  and  is  reminding  boaties  to  make  sure  they  are  able  to  call  for  help  in  emergencies.  â€œAbsolutely,  in  this  instance  a  tragedy  was  averted,â€?  he  agreed  this  week  of  the  critical  nature  of  the  dusk  rescue  by  a  passing  Raglan  trawlerman  of  seven  men   being  blown  out  to  sea  by  near-100kmh  winds  aboard  their  broken-down  5.5  metre  aluminium  boat. While  the  men  had  lifejackets,  Wally  said  he  understood  they  were  a  â€œbit  leanâ€?  on  communications.  â€œThe  message  is  reasonably  clear  as  this  incident  has  highlighted  â€“  boaties  should  take  two  forms  of  communication  with  them,  a  cellphone  and  a  [Coastguard]  radio  for  example,  and  keep  them  in  a  waterproof  container,â€?  he  said. Wally  said  Tamahine  skipper  Mark  â€œLumberâ€?  Lloyd  and  his  deckhand  were  KHDGLQJ KRPH IURP D WKUHH GD\ ÂżVKLQJ WULS when  they  â€œsaw  this  boat  not  looking  so  Ă€DVK DQG WRRN LW LQ WRZ´ The  Tamahine  contacted  the  Coastguard  for  assistance  and  the  Gallagher  Rescue  craft  EURXJKW WKH FROG EXW XQLQMXUHG ÂżVKHUPHQ back  to  its  wharf  base  â€œpretty  promptlyâ€? Â

before  returning  to  sea  so  it  could  assist  the  trawler  if  need  be  with  the  tow. Wally  said  the  Coastguard’s  priority  was  always  getting  people  in  trouble  to  a  triage  point  as  soon  as  possible  so  ambulance  staff  could  take  over  with  any  medical  assistance  that  was  required. While  the  Tamahine  took  the  lead  role  in  last  week’s  rescue,  Wally  said  the  Raglan  &RDVWJXDUG KDG PRVW RI WKH ELJ ORFDO ÂżVKLQJ boats  on  its  list  â€œso  if  a  major  disaster  happens  they’re  available  to  help.   We’re  really  appreciative  of  that  backup  support.â€? He  stressed  the  Coastguard  had  no  policing  role.   â€œOur  job  is  to  help  people  [boaties]  when  they  make  mistakes  or  get  into  trouble‌  we’re  not  an  enforcement  agency.â€? The  incident  is  however  being  investigated  by  the  Waikato  Regional  Council,  which  last  week  reminded  boaties  to  take  extra  care  after  several  mishaps  which  it  said  could  have  ended  tragically.   Others  were  the  swamping  of  a  boat  by  a  rogue  wave  as  it  tried  to  cross  the  Raglan  bar  on  New  Year’s  Day  and  a  January  7  incident  where  a  powerboat  ended  up  on  rocks  at  Whale  Bay. Although  witnesses  to  the  latter  incident  claimed  the  boat  came  in  â€œway  too  closeâ€?  to  shore  and  capsized,  the  council  said  that  its  inquiries  into  both  earlier  cases  found  there  was  little  more  the  skippers  could  have  done  and  that  the  precautions  taken  had  saved  the  lives  of  those  on  board.

Raglan Coastguard President Wally Hawken It  said  the  powerboat’s  windscreen  and  canopy  had  been  damaged  in  a  rough  Raglan  bar  crossing  â€œand  instead  of  attempting  another  bar  crossing  the  skipper  wisely  chose  to  come  in  to  another  bay  where  he  was  caught  out  by  some  rocksâ€?.  While  in  the  earlier  mishap  on  the  bar  both  occupants  â€“  who  were  wearing  lifejackets  â€“  had  been  thrown  into  the  water,   the  council  pointed  out  the  skipper  had  about  10  years’  experience  and  had  attended  several  courses  including  a  bar  crossing  training  day. Council  navigation  safety  programme  PDQDJHU 1LFROH %RWKHUZD\ VDLG WKHVH ÂżUVW two  incidents  just  went   to  show  how  even  the  most  prudent  boaties  could  get  caught  out,  especially  on  the  west  coast  which  could  be  particularly  unforgiving.   Edith  Symes
