Planning  is  now  under  way  for  this  year's  Christmas  in  the  Park  which  will  be  held  on  Sunday  8th  December.   Our  aim  is  to  keep  this  primarily  a  local  event  so  start  working  on  those  items  and  please  let  us  know. Youth  and  Mainly  Music  are  back  up  and  running  for  the  new  term  and  the  Foodbank  continues  to  be  busy.   Thanks  to  all  those  who  contribute  week  after  week,  it  is  appreciated.   For  further  info  on  these  and  our  Sunday  church  services,  check  out  the  Surfside  website  at  www.surfside.co.nz  or  SKRQH WKH FKXUFK RIÂżFH Have  a  great  week. To  the  Editor, It  seems  everyone  is  talking  about  the  expansion  of  Raglan  these  days,  (PDLO rhys@ellisonlaw.co.nz from  The  Raglan  Land  Company  to  RU SKRQH 3 0 the  resurrection  of  the  council’s  spatial  +DPLOWRQ 2IĂ€FH plan.  forecasts WeatherMap - New Zealand weather 7ULVWUDP 6WUHHW , 32 %R[ , ) No  one  could  ever  doubt  Raglan's  unique  beauty  and  with  that  â€˜special  vibe’  you  feel  as  you  wander  down  Bow  Street,  it  is  understandable  why Â

people  want  to  live  in  Raglan.  It  made  me  wonder  what  would  be  the  breaking  point  for  such  expansion  and  growth;Íž  at  what  point  would  you  lose  what  makes  Raglan  unique.  If  we  look  at  population  then  how  many  more  people  living  in  Raglan  would  it  take  for  larger  retail  outlets  to  see  a  viable  market;Íž  if  we  look  at  the  types  of  housing  to  be  built  what  types  of  people  could  afford  it  DQG ZKDW ZRXOG EH WKHLU EHQHÂżW WR WKH community.  It  is  those  questions  that  should  be  considered  before  anyone  starts  planning  Raglan's  expansion,  those  and  a  good  few  others.  New  building  developments  can  have  two  outcomes,  they  can  add  to  a  community  or  they  can  divide  it.  So  where  do  we  stand  as  a  community?  Do  we  expand  and  enjoy  WKH EHQHÂżWV RI ZHDOWK RYHU YLVWD RQO\ WR ÂżQG RXW WKDW WKH SURPLVHG ZHDOWK is  only  enjoyed  by  a  select  few  or  do  we  stand  still  and  remain  somewhere  everyone  wants  to  live  and  desires  to  be.  OK,  so  even  the  most  staunch  â€˜greenie’  would  agree  that  standing  still  is  not  an  option  but  how  do  you  balance  Raglan's  uniqueness  with  gentle  expansion?  This  is  the  question  that  we  as  a  community  have  to  trust  will  be  answered  by  others,  and  that  the  answers  they  come  up  with  are  not  driven  by  greed  or  personal  gain.  So  I  would  ask  that  just  like  me,  you,  a  member  of  Raglans  unique  community,  listen,  ask  and  ensure  that  whatever  WKH IXWXUH KROGV IRU 5DJODQ LW EHQHÂżWV http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla Raglan  and  Raglan's  special  population  and  not  a  few  already  bulging  bank  accounts. hose  that  popped  into  ValentĂŠs  restaurant  (formerly  Vinnies)  last  Saturday  may  have  been  surprised  to  see  sandboxes  laid  out  on  some  of  the  tables.  A  new  initiative  by  local  counselor  RenĂŠ  AndrĂŠ,  'sandplay'  is  a  creative  and  holistic  approach  to  healing  and  emotional  development. “Sandplay  is  really  just  like  play,  it  can  be  used  with  both  adults  and  children  and  it’s  about  working  things  out  in  a  way  that  is  free  and  imaginative,â€?  says  RenĂŠ. On  the  surface  sandplay  is  literally  about  playing  with  toys  in  the  sand,  but  at  a  deeper  level,  the  objects  you  pick  and  the  shapes  you  make  in  the  sand  can  suggest  something  a  little  more  symbolic. Having  amassed  a  collection  of  objects  and  toys  for  sandplay  over  the  last  15  years,  RenĂŠ  reckons  everybody  that  popped  in  was  giving  it  a  go. “I’d  originally  intended  to  run  the  FDIp IURP WKUHH WR ÂżYH EXW , GLGQÂśW HQG up  getting  away  until  eight  o’clock!â€?  he  said. A  practicing  counselor  and  psychotherapist  RenĂŠ  wanted  to  raise  awareness  about  different  approaches  to  healing  and  personal  development.

“I  think  that  counseling  in  agencies  is  becoming  increasingly  managerial,  pathological  and  academic.  There’s  a  tendency  to  lean  towards  diagnosis  of  a  â€˜condition’  and  I  think  that  can  alienate  people  from  approaching  these  agencies.â€? While  not  as  mainstream  as  traditional  approaches,  'sandplay'  has  more  recently  been  used  to  help  children  in  vulnerable  communities  like  refugee  camps.  Even  though  it  can  be  fun  and  lighthearted,  for  the  therapist,  'sandplay'  can  provide  a  â€˜snapshot  of  the  psyche.’ “You  might  be  drawn  to  particular  objects  more  than  other  ones  and  once  you  start  thinking  about  why  you  chose  those  you  can  get  some  real  insights.â€? For  RenĂŠ,  raising  awareness  about  sandplay  is  about  trying  to  reintroduce  creative  and  holistic  therapies  to  the  public  domain  and  â€˜bridging  the  gap’  between  common  perceptions  about  counseling  and  the  reality  of  doing  â€˜inner  work.’ Initially  trying  out  the  Sandplay  CafĂŠ  idea  to  see  how  people  would  respond,  RenĂŠ  hopes  to  run  the  cafĂŠ  again  soon.  For  more  information  on  sandplay  therapy  you  can  contact  RenĂŠ  at  Therapeutic  Spaces:  027  6333  095. Over a week ago staff at the Tony Sly Pottery workshop discovered the baby boy or girl on rocks at the wharf and called Department of Conservation staff as well as our veterinary team at Anexa to see what could be done for the pup - that looked decidedly under the weather. While DOC’s attitude in these cases is to let nature run its course, the vets decided to help improve its condition when it looked worse the next day. For the next few days the shower at the back of the vets was 'home-base'. ‘Baby’ was treated with a course of antibiotics and DQWL LQÀDPPDWRULHV WR KHDO VRPH QDVW\ ORRNLQJ ZHOWV DQG VRUH ÀLSSHUV DQG WKHQ UHOHDVHG LQWR &R[ Bay. At this time of the year mother seals are weaning their pups and, according to the vets, there will be many around trying to fend for themselves, as nature intended.
