To  the  editor, It  has  been  interesting  to  keep  an  eye  on  the  use  of  the  Raglan  bus  now  that  the  Sunday  service  has  been  terminated.  The  net  result  seems  to  be  that  weekend  use  of  the  service  has  dropped  sharply.  The  reasons  for  this  were  quite  predictable.  Frequently,  usage  would  have  been  by  people  who  wanted  to  visit  Raglan  for  the  weekend  or  going  to  Hamilton  for  one  or  two  nights.  Removing  the  Sunday  bus  service  has  sabotaged  both  of  these  possibilities.  Weekend  buses  were  always  run  with  quite  low  numbers  but  nevertheless  were  important  to  those  that  used  them.  The  use  of  a  smaller  bus  on  such  routes  seems  a  logical  answer  and  I  have  not  seen  any  RI¿FLDO DQVZHU DV WR ZK\ WKLV LV QRW SRVVLEOH 7KHUH LV a  similar  and  much  greater  problem  in  Hamilton  where  large  buses  with  only  a  few  passengers  scoot  around  all  day,  except  at  peak  morning  and  evening  busy  periods.  The  development  of  bus  services  was  partly  to  get  people  out  of  their  cars,  not  a  lot  of  progress  there.

The  usual  reason  given  for  not  solving  the  Raglan  bus  service  problems  is  that  there  is  not  enough  money  in  the  transport  budget.  The  answer  to  that  is  to  divert  more  funds  into  the  transport  fund  and  away  from  councillor’s  vanity  projects  like  the  velodrome.
