Junior Soccer Coach: Genevieve Cheesman Who do you coach? The 2015 'Morays' 7th Grade Junior Soccer team! How long have you been coaching for? I first started in 1994. It was a year -7 netball team. (or form one as it was known back in the day!) That was the only time I've coached a team of all girls come to think of it. I've only coached at junior level. Why did you decide to put your hand up to coach? I volunteered for manager's job but was asked to coach! Honestly though, I enjoy it, and I had the time to give.

What are the challenges? West Coast winter weather. What is you coaching style? Be a 'good sport' win or lose, promote fair play on the field, have pride in themselves for learning new skills and above all, have fun! Is it all about winning? Not at junior level. Being part of a team and enjoying the game is the priority now. Was sport important to you growing up? Absolutely. My family are mad keen on all kinds of sports. We'll support it, play it, coach it, and provide armchair commentary for all televised games! How do you think team sports benefit our young ones today? Commitment to a team, belonging to a community, confidence in themselves, fitness and well-being. Perhaps the added bonus for some of our youth today is that it's personally interactive. We all spend a fair amount of time with computers, phones, or technology of some kind. It's a good thing for everyone to get out there and in amongst a team sport! Best piece of advice you could give to parents? Within reason (and budget), let them try their hand at any sport they show an interest in. You never know what they'll be good at or really enjoy. Never mind if it's not your favourite sport or what you'd rather go watch them play! Go along to http://ww the first couple of training sessions or lessons and if they like it, they have to commit to seeing that season through. Weather Map

A

local trust is set to fundraise $3.5 million so it can build a dedicated health centre to ensure long-term affordable health care stays in the community. The West Coast Health Charitable Trust had already earmarked a property at 9 Wallis Street for the community-funded medical centre and aimed to raise the first $1 million by October this year, with the rest due by the middle of 2016, said trustee Diane Spicer. “By the end of next year, we want it built,” she said. The trust presented its vision at the Connect open day and at the Raglan Chamber of Commerce meeting last week and its major fundraising drive was being launched this week with a funding application to Trust Waikato. “[But] it’s not all about us as a trust fundraising all the money, we want the community to come on board. After all, it is going to be a building for the community,” Diane said. Plans had already been drawn up for the site. It would involve a 478-square metre medical hub to house doctors, nurses, health specialists, a councillor, a pharmacy, rooms for community health groups and health resources. It would also have a treatment area, two critical care beds with an access bay for an ambulance, an isolation area, administration rooms, a reception area, a large waiting room and a 17-car parking area. The West Coast Health clinic would lease its room from the trust and would be under a contractual agreement to keep its fees for

health care low, Diane said. “The trust jumped on board so at least this way, you have the chance to have some control over the [health care] costs,” she said. Trust treasurer Rebekah Doran, one of the three doctors who owned the West Coast Health, said the clinic had outgrown its current rented premises in Wallis Street. The partners did not want to take on the financial burden of building their own new premises but wanted to ensure there was a sustainable medical clinic for Raglan for the future, and a community-owned building seemed the best option. “At the end of the day, we don’t want to be investors, we want to get on with our jobs of being doctors,” Rebekah said. Recent studies by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners showed that it was becoming increasingly difficult to attract doctors to rural areas. The average age of GPs in the Midland health area was 54.5 years, which meant the current shortage of GPs would get even worse over the next ten years. Young GPs were also less likely to buy into the business so were not as likely to stay long-term with the one practice. Rebekah said the new community-owned building would ensure there were up-to-date premises and education facilities that would attract young doctors. If the Raglan medical clinic were to close, the nearest medical help would be in Dinsdale, Hamilton. Another option would be to have long-term locums, like at Waihi Beach in the

Coromandel. “That’s not good for patient care and continuity,” she said. “And we don’t want that for Raglan.” Diane said the trust had long-term plans for the centre, which would not stop when the building was finished. These could include expansion, an x-ray machine and “futureproofing” of the building, such as setting up solar power. It also planned to look at a health care community partnership model by 2020. The trust was established four years ago to administer Raglan’s after hours medical emergency response coverage, known as PRIME, which was funded by St John and ACC. The trust was excited when West Coast Health approached it about the building idea because it could see that an important part of succession planning was to ensure there would always be a medical clinic in Raglan, she said. Now it was asking for the community’s help with fundraising, encouraging anyone interested in donating money, ideas or time to contact the trust at: wchcharitabletrust@gmail. com The trust planned to put out a regular newsletter to keep the community informed about the building and the fundraising. “We want everything to be transparent and clear, to let them [the community] know what’s happening with the building,” Diane said. “For me, you have to make sure the community participates in the building”. Hit Broadway musical, Mamma Mia includes local Actors and actresses from across New Zealand, including Waitetuna, have begun rehearsals for the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia. Mamma Mia, which features a soundtrack of Abba’s most popular songs, will be presented by Hamilton Operatic Society at Founders

Theatre from Friday 19 June to Saturday 4 July. Hamilton Operatic Society chairperson Rachel Balme says this is the first time the hit musical has ever been presented in the Waikato by a community theatre group. “The Hamilton Operatic Society is beyond excited to be the eighth out of 11 community theatre groups across New Zealand to unveil

this internationally-renown show,” she said. The show brings together some of Waikato’s most talented singers and performers, including Niamh Cowley Connolly from Waitetuna. Other cast members have arrived in the last week from as far as the South Island to begin pulling the show together.

t looks as though Raglan’s summer music festival, Soundsplash, could make a comeback. Wainui Reserve. However, Brian stressed that while planning was “well down the track” many people had yet to be consulted about the proposed concert. The International Soundsplash Eco Reggae Festival was held every summer from 2001 at Wainui Reserve, attracting some of the big names in roots, reggae and dub and some large crowds until the last one in 2008.

Brian and Naomi presented their plans to revive Soundsplash to the Raglan Coastal Reserves Advisory Committee, which oversees the reserve where a stage and overnight camping area would be set up. The plan was stop the music at midnight on both days and to direct the fees charged for the event into the infrastructure of the reserve. Committee member and Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley said he supported Brian and Naomi’s bid to revive the festival “as they ran it before”. He believed a music festival held at the natural amphitheatre at the Wainui Reserve would be a good fit for Raglan, which was seen as a musical destination. But there were also logistical issues to sort out concerning the management of the event and the pressure on local infrastructure, he said. However, he hoped the knowledge gained from previous Soundsplash festivals would be put to good use in the planning of this one. He said the poor attendance of the 2008 Soundsplash festival was “an unfortunate situation” whereby there were a lot of other events on at the same time and “it didn’t work out” for the Raglan festival. Waikato District Council environmental health officer Cindy Norris confirmed she had received Brian and Naomi’s event management plan but had yet to consider it. Brian said the pair planned to meet with emergency services and other interested parties to discuss the proposed event and go through the appropriate channels. They also planned to talk to Wainui Road residents about the concert. Rachel Benn

Tsunami risks to West Coast to be investigated T seen as the poor cousin to the

he wild West Coast is sometimes

more glamorous East Coast but should a tsunami hit, west may be best.

Raglan company eCoast will soon be starting a tsunami hazard assessment of the coastal area from Port Waikato to Aotea as part of a Waikato District Council initiative to evaluate postearthquake tsunami risk in the region. Council team leader regional hazards Adam Munro said the study was about understanding the risk of tsunami in the area and what it meant to the local community in terms of infrastructure, evacuation planning, insurance and other important matters. “We think the risk to the West Coast is less than the East Coast, but we don’t know how high it [a tsunami] will go,” Adam said. The council had already completed the process for the Coromandel-East Coast part of its region following Japan’s 2011 earthquake and the resulting tsunami, and had held public open days on the Coromandel to inform the public about its findings and the implications of a tsunami there. A lot of work was being done nationally on developing a tsunami plan, but the general rule of thumb was if people felt the earth shake violently “that’s your natural warning system to head for the hills”, Adam said. eCoast co-director Jose Borrero, who could be carrying out the local tsunami study, said there was a fault system lying offshore all along the East Coast of the North Island. “Here on the West Coast, we’re probably in the lower risk hazard zone

relative to other parts of the country,” he explained. However Australian natural hazards expert Professor James Goff suggested it was still prudent to consider the tsunami risk to the West Coast after he found historical evidence of three or four large tsunamis along the West Coast over the past 1000 years. The most recent one was in 1870, affecting Westport in the South Island. The earliest one identified within that period was thought to have occurred between 1320 and 1450 along the west Waikato coast. eCoast would do computer modelling using existing topography of the area to estimate what a tsunami might look like, where it would come from, how big it would be and how long it would take to travel here. Hazard and evacuation planning would also be considered. “We’re trying to be practical – a worst case scenario is what we’re looking at,” Jose said. The company would start on the study this week, with a draft report due at the end of September and a final set of reports due at the end of the year. The American-trained Jose had worked previously for ASR - the artificial reef company that mysteriously vanished from Raglan in 2012 - for six years until 2012 when he “transitioned over to his new role as a director of eCoast”, the eCoast website said. He had used his knowledge of tsunami hydrodynamics and the coastal effects of tsunamis to carry out modelling work both in New Zealand and overseas, including the State of California, and said it would be good to be working locally on this latest study. Host families sought here after students ‘blown away’ by visit A secondary student exchange programme is now looking for host families in Raglan to add to its Waikato destinations after discovering the lure of Solscape Eco Retreat on a recent day trip with a group of enthused teens from overseas. Liz Jones, the NZ team manager of Student Exchange Australia New Zealand (SEANZ), told the Chronicle it was an “amazing” visit to Raglan back in April. She’d never visited Solscape before with students and they were “blown away” by it. “It would be great to place some of them here in future,” she added. “They all love coming to Raglan for the day, but to date we have not had any students live there.” So she’s on a mission, looking for families in the area to welcome students arriving in the country from now through to early July.

If potential families are unsure about the usual five or 10-month commitment, Liz says, they can opt for a shorter trial period of hosting. More often than not however, she adds, families are keen to extend their student’s stay. Student Exchange Australia New Zealand is a not-for-profit company registered as a secondary exchange organisation with education departments in both countries, encouraging incoming and outgoing students. Volunteer community co-ordinators work to support students and families during the exchange experience, with Hamilton the point of contact for Raglan hosts. And the difference from other exchange programmes? Families get to choose their students from online profiles, says Liz, from more than 25 mainly European and American countries. The 15 to 18-year-olds live like locals and attend school, possibly with the host family’s own children. It’s a “life-growing” experience

for the exchange students, Liz insists, and they generally find the New Zealand school system more relaxed than their own with subjects like drama and outdoor education included in the curriculum. They come from countries as diverse as the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany,

Italy, Sweden and the US. Raglan would certainly provide an opportunity with a “different” environment for them, she says, if recent students’ enthusiasm for the place is anything to go by. And the advantage for host families? “It is an experience that is often referred to as a

way to reignite your passion for New Zealand, while at the same time creating bonds and sharing lifelong memories,” SEANZ says. Call hosting co-ordinator Christine Lane on 0800 440 079. Or check out the website at http://studentexchange.org. nz/

Have your say on the flag Message from MP Barbara Kuriger

T

he New Zealand flag is one of the most important symbols of our national identity and the proposal to consider a new flag is attracting a great deal of interest. Our current flag has served us for more than 100 years, one of three flags in our history. That means most New Zealanders appreciate the privilege of having this very rare opportunity to have their say on the design that will most likely serve the country well into the future. There are lots of ideas about what a new New Zealand flag could look like. It’s our silver fern, rather than our flag, that’s etched in the crosses marking the final resting place of all New Zealanders who are interred in Commonwealth War Graves overseas. And it’s often the silver fern, rather than our flag, that Kiwi travellers wear when they are overseas. But, of course, the silver fern is not the only alternative design idea. There are already numerous design suggestions on the Gallery page of the flag.govt.nz website. Have a look. I think you’ll be impressed by the range, and by the care that people are taking when suggesting ideas. Prime Minister John Key says he believes it is the right time for New Zealanders to consider changing the design to one that better reflects our status as a modern, independent nation.

But as he’s also said, he gets one vote in each referendum, just like everyone else. We are determined the flag debate will be conducted thoroughly, respectfully and fairly with every opportunity for New Zealanders to have their say. An independent Flag Consideration Panel was appointed to design and run the process, and that panel has just launched public consultation and invited submissions. Until mid-July, New Zealanders can contribute their ideas and suggestions for a possible new flag design. The panel will pick four designs to go to the first referendum. Voters will be asked to indicate which of four designs they most prefer. You won’t be able to vote at that stage on whether or not you want change, because we think it is important that you know the alternative before you say yes or no to change. The design that gets the most support from the first referendum will go forward to a second referendum early next year where voters will have a simple choice between the new design and the existing flag. It’s a logical process, and it’s a fair process. It will be up to the people of New Zealand to decide whether they want to change the flag. You can find out more and take part in the discussion at www.flag.govt.nz or www. standfor.co.nz

Thank you to those that came and dug deep into their pockets on the night and to: Ray White Raglan for co-ordinating the auction, Kelsy Carter for taking the photographs, Liz Hosking from Colour My World Face Painting, the whanau for the refreshments. Flower show to blossom again

Last year Raglan's Annual Flower Show was recommenced, after some years in recess, and proved very popular. This year it will be held on Saturday 29th August at the Union Parish Hall on Stewart Street. This is a community event open to all. To encourage more children to participate, the various classes in the 'Children's Section' are now open to all children irrespective of age. It is hoped that our schools will promote this. An innovative new section this year is “Multi-media Art” with a floral theme. This

GOD IS REAL! HERE’S MY STORY

may include such items as photography, embroidery, painting, collage work, models etc., and will be judged by 'People's Choice' votes. Schedules showing the various classes in each section can be obtained from the Library or Information Centre or by ringing Julia (825 8028). Certificates will be awarded, and winners of each class receive a small cash prize so, gardeners be getting those spring bulbs and vegetables in, and artists be working on your projects! Julia Brown, Secretary, Raglan Horticultural Society My experience of becoming a Christian is maybe a little unusual because I was aware of a presence in my life as a very young lad. It was something I knew and experienced but how did I know and what was it? For me it was also like a guardian that gave me comfort so I just accepted it as part of growing up. It was many many years later that I accepted that presence as the God of all creation making contact with me, and even then it took a huge step of faith. I was a reasonably normal kid and I’m still reasonably normal I think. Being a Christian has made me different and brought purpose, direction and understanding to my life, and some discipline knowing that God wants to communicate with me – and he does if I take time to listen. Being aware of this presence it was logical that I find the source, and I have. It doesn't make me any better than any one else, just acceptable in God’s eyes.

Over Queens birthday weekend, Cannon Ridge Hunters & Gatherer's held a kids hunting and fishing competition here in Raglan. The day was enjoyed by many families from both near and far. There were four sections that kids could enter: hare, possum, fish and pig with both cash and Ridgeline gears up for grabs. It was a close competition that saw many entries, and the Ridgeline Judging team did a great job to manage the weigh in. We look forward to holding another kids hunting and fishing competition. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their contributions and support

in helping to make the day a huge success. A percentage of the proceeds raised has been donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust. Sayers Drainage, Live Electrical, Thompsons ITM, Raglan Shuttle Ltd, Top Cut Butchers, LJ Hooker, Miro Feeds, Ohautira Fencing & Spraying & Maintenance, Tasman Lands Ltd, Top Garage Raglan, Top Cut Butchey, Raglan Excavation, Raglan Earth Works, Raglan Parcels, Wally Smith, Live Electrical, Agrilife, A1 Concrete, Tom Rudolph, Tai Paddles, Hunia Whānau, Drip Free Plumbing, New Leaf Tree Services, Tyre Tracks Club President Rob Maniapoto.

I find it quite profound, that God is trying to make contact with me. Sometimes the difficult part is understanding what God is saying and for me that takes faith, study and communication. God is real and I know the reality of God in my life. The love, compassion and forgiveness of God I find is completely opposite to the hate and mayhem going on in parts of the world today. So I made the decision to believe and it has been the most life-changing decision I have ever made. It helps in times of stress, knowing that God cares and would like to be a part of my every day life.

Living in this great country and retired in Raglan, I can spend more time working out the reality of God in my life: help family and friends, enjoy the town, drink the coffee, and appreciate how blessed I am. Basil Turnbull

Council signals support for water CCO Waikato District Council wants to form a ratepayerowned council-control organisation (CCO) for future water management along with Waipa District and Hamilton City Councils. In May, independent consultants recommended the three councils form a not-forprofit CCO to manage water and wastewater across the subregion. The report said doing so would save ratepayers of the three Councils $468 million over 28 years. Waikato district would save $28 million over 10 years, and would get huge benefits from improved drinking water quality and environmental compliance, the report said.

Old School Arts Centre: Saturday 20 June, 8pm and Sunday 21 June, 4.30pm.

Today members of Waikato district’s Infrastructure Committee voted unanimously to support, in principle, the formation of a ratepayer-owned CCO to manage water to manage water on behalf of three councils. Mayor Allan Sanson stressed it was an “in principle” decision only. “Today’s recommendation sends a strong signal to ratepayers that we believe forming a CCO and capturing those massive savings is the best thing to do. But we have to wait and see where Hamilton and Waipa go before proceeding any further.” The recommendation will need to be ratified at a full Council meeting later this month. “Before any final decision is made all three councils would need to go through an extensive

consultation process with their communities. We’re still in the very early stages but we thought it was important to be upfront about where this council believes it should be heading. “I’m particularly pleased that all Waikato district councillors kept an open mind on this issue as they are required to do. They haven’t focused solely on the savings, which are substantial but have also considered the nonfinancial benefits including better environmental outcomes for the district. And they considered four options very carefully before deciding this was the best option for our own ratepayers.” Waipa District Council and Hamilton City Council have yet to formally discuss the independent report. Both councils have already held public workshops.
