Meet with the DJ A series of Q & Aâs with our local DJâs
This week the Chronicle caught up with DJ Benny L (Ben Lenzner). Joâs Takeaways. Te Kopua Domain......................................................825 8761 How did you come up with your DJ name? Well, my first name is Ben and my last name is Lenzner, some people call me Benny, so DJ Benny L it is! Where do you currently practice as Marlin Cafe & Grill. Dine in. On the Wharf...........................................825 0010 a DJ? I have a show on Raglan Radio, Thursday evenings from 9-10:30pm and Thursday afternoons from 1:30-3pm. the last 4-5 shows are also podcast on the website - across110thstreet.podomatic. The Shack. Dine in or Takeaway. 19 Bow Street..................................825 0027 com. My show is called, Across 110th Street: Beats, Ritmos & Stoops. Does your show have a particular theme? Iâm from New York City and the theme is basically a walk across 110th street (my street) in the summer and the The Raglan Club. Dine in or Takeaway. 22-24 Bow Street.................. 825 8278 kinds of music you might hear, which could really be any genre of music from around the world. How did you first get involved? I used to DJ when I was an Registered Midwife undergraduate student at Carleton College in Minnesota, way back in the late 90s and into the early 00s. 07 825 5396 Who were some of your influences when you started? 021 068 0615 I love music, all types. My cousin, Caring for the ones you love Mikey, gave me my first two cassettes 27 - 29 Manukau Road Offering gentle midwifery care way back when and Iâll always remember - New Zealand weather forecasts Ph. 07 825 8306WeatherMap those albums, Bob Marley, Legend, and for pregnant, birthing and new mothers Fax: 07 825 8855 Led Zeppelin, the album with the guy with sticks on his back (Stairway to Email: raglantrust@xtra.co.nz birth centre âĸ home âĸ hospital Heaven, Going to California). my music tastes have expanded massively. On my show you might hear the Nigerian AfroBeat creator, Fela Kuti, or the Malian Wa s s o u l o u Ben Lenzner singer Oumou Sangare, or Feist, the Toronto musician or some old school, Che Fu. Some shows are a mix of genres and styles and others might stick to one pseudo-genre or region, say reggae or african rhythms or mellow moods. What is the best thing about being a DJ? I get to share obscure musicians and music with Raglan and world! What has been your best show? I love when guests come on and DJ with me and we share tracks and music. Earlier this year, I did a couple great shows with Xavier Meade. And Iâve also done a show with J. Rizla and one with Rodrigo Hill. Those were tons of fun as well. Also once with my flatmates Jasper and Willemijn, and they put me onto a bunch of Belgian and Dutch music, which for some reason I was skeptical about but turned out to be wonderful! Whathttp://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla song never fails to get you on the dance floor? Groove Is In the Heart, by DeeeLite. That track is just a dance classic everywhere on this globe. Weather Map

Sand-skiing turns Petra into real dare-devil on and off horseback
,
Petra Yorke 'skiing' down Ngarunui beach behind her favoured horse Lilly. Image thanks to Jwan Milek
P
etra Yorke loves skiing almost as much as she loves horses â and now sheâs found a bizarre way to indulge both passions at once. She dons hiking boots and her grass skis from Germany and blasts along the beach behind her favoured horse Lilly, steering with a long rope or piece of baling twine attached to the halter and holding onto a shorter rope attached to the tail. Horse and woman simply hit the hard sand of Ngarunui at low tide and, in Petraâs words, âgo for it manâ. She had a harness to hold onto at first with Lilly but the horse didnât seem to like it as much as the pull on her tail, which Petra points out is one of the strongest parts of the equine body. âShe loves it!â Petra says of Lilly. Probably no-one was more surprised than local photographer Jwan Milek who came upon the pair in full flight some months back when he happened to be out taking pictures of racehorses on the beach. âIt was classic,â he told the Chronicle. Itâs all just a bit of fun to the Swissborn local whoâs lived here for years now and forged a lifestyle she loves on her 50acre farm high on a hill off SH23 between Raglan and Te Uku. Lilly â the first of six horses she now owns â is so obedient she walks, trots, canters and stops on command, says Petra, making her the ideal choice for sand skiing which has its origins in the âski-joeringâ or ski driving of Scandinavia where skiers were historically pulled along the snow first by reindeer, then horses. Fast-forward to the mid â60s when wheeled or tracked skis were used in Germany for the newly invented sport of grass skiing â one which helped skiers train before the winter season â and itâs not hard to see where Petra picked up the idea and adapted it to a coastal lifestyle, mixing her love of skiing and horses. âItâs cool,â she told the Chronicle last week proudly showing off new love Diva, the latest addition to her team of horses or trekkers as she calls them for her hobby horseriding business âSurf & Turfâ. Diva is a wild horse from the Kaimanawas â delivered to her property just nine days before the Chronicle called â and Petraâs now hellbent on getting close enough to break her in. She was an enticing half metre away from the horse by last Friday, and satisfied at the weekâs progress
in getting to know her new mount. âSheâs quiet, eats in a circle like the other horses and I can shift her (from one place to another on the farm).â Itâs just a matter of time, Petra explains, before she can see her suitability or otherwise as a trekker. âIâve never had a wild horse before âĻ itâs a new era in my life,â she admits. While she stands to learn a lot from the recent arrival, Petraâs cautious all the same. âI donât want to pressurise her âĻ I need to listen to her, be sensitive to her.â Petraâs never broken a horse in before but then sheâd never ridden a horse until buying Lilly off TradeMe three years ago. âI was not a horsey person,â she laughs, blaming menopause for the indulgence. In fact it was boating and fishing that
this mother of two grown-up boys was tackling with a passion back when the Chronicle first caught up with her a few years ago. While still getting out to sea, the soon-to-be 50-year-old can now also be seen riding â or skiing â along the beach, wearing her trademark pink lipstick and a pink helmet for that touch of femininity. She rides bareback too, which is how she first jumped on Lilly, âcommunicatingâ with the horse through her body and legs. Riding barebackâs challenging and exciting, she says, though she does admit to fear at the thought of bareback jumping like Kiwi free rider Alycia Burton who featured recently on TV3âs â3rd Degreeâ and whose dare-devil feats on horseback have become a YouTube sensation. T
heyâre sold from her workplace but local librarian Merren Taitâs not used a blue Waikato District Council rubbish bag for a whole year now â and isnât about to start. With the amount of landfill sheâs produced in that time, thereâs simply no need. She stopped buying and using plastic last July, and not just for that particular plastic-free month which was promoted the world over but for 12 months as can be seen by the blogspot 1yearnoplastic sheâs so proud of. The challenge has been
âincredibleâ, Merren told the Chronicle at the weekend ahead of talking this week to a Chamber of Commerce breakfast networking meeting at The Shack and showing off her minimal paper bag of waste as an example of what can be achieved. âI feel like my year has created positive change and made people more aware about their plastic consumption,â she says. Merrenâs had people carrying plastic apologising in the street like sheâs a âplastic Naziâ, she quips. But that just shows theyâre aware, she explains of whatâs becoming known internationally as the plastic catastrophe.
Plastic is a convenient consumer product used widely only since the late 1970s, she points out, but âunfortunately itâs also a huge pollutant âĻ because it never fully degradesâ. So her blog â which has been looked at from many parts of the world, but mostly by Kiwis and Americans â suggests people go ask their nana for tips on alternatives to plastic like reusing jars and tins as containers, newspaper for lining rubbish bins, egg cartons for seed raising and rags or old stockings for stake ties in the garden. Merren says sheâs found her own dedication to the cause quite easy, except when sheâs been given gifts in plastic or not had convenient snacks like cheese and crackers on hand for visitors. âI donât like baking,â she admits, so avocado and relish toast â from paperbagged bread like the Mackenzie High Country brand and Ruapuke sourdough loaves â have sufficed. Now Merrenâs pushing Raglan for a second Plastic Free July because âgreat stuff happenedâ around town last time in what she believes was the first Kiwi community to embrace the challenge and refuse single-use or throwaway plastic â like food packaging and water bottles â for a day, a week or a month. There was a good turnout to the inaugural Plastics Anonymous meeting, the Whaingaroa Environment Centre set up a stall at the Old Schoolâs creative market, Raglan Kindergarten made âhugeâ changes from 2.1 metres of non-recyclable waste one week down to .25 metres the next and the local supermarket sold reusable and paper grocery bags at cost for the month of July. The initiative â inspired by Merren and supported by Whaingaroa Environment Centre because it was felt Raglan would be receptive to the idea â was noticed internationally in newsletters and also led to a few phone and email interviews with European media, says the plastic-free advocate. Merren was initially moved to action by the âMidwayâ trailer which documents the tragic effect of plastic consumption on a colony of albatross whose home is near the âgreat Pacific rubbish patchâ, where plastics pool between powerful ocean currents. See Merrenâs blog at www.1yearnoplastic. blogspot.co.nz and pick up lots of tips for Plastic Free July at her 7pm workshop at Valentes, Thursday July 3.

Hamiltonâs measles epidemic hit closer to home this week with the news two Raglan people have been stricken with the highly contagious infection. Waikato District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Anita Bell confirmed to the Chronicle on Tuesday there were two measles cases in Raglan but said they were associated with the outbreak at Hamiltonâs Fraser High School, where 38 students and staff have caught the notifiable disease. The revelation came the same day it was reported that 53 people in Hamilton now had the measles, and that three of them were in hospital. Classes only returned to normal at Fraser High on Tuesday after the school kept half its numbers off on alternate days because several staff
were off sick with the measles. Two other Hamilton schools â Girls High and Hamilton Junior High School â have each reported a single case of the measles. Dr Bell told the Chronicle public health advice had been circulated to early childhood centres, medical centres and schools throughout the region. âThe most important message [for parents] is to check your own and your familyâs immunity status with your local family doctor â and if your children arenât immunised then get them immunised as soon as possible,â she said. Anyone displaying symptoms of measles â such as fever, a cough, a blocked nose, sore and red eyes or a small dotty red rash â should immediately contact their doctor or Healthline on 0800 611 116.
Runners up: Raglan 9th Grade (Green) rugby side and coach Hayden Robbs
On Sunday 8th June eight Raglan Junior Rugby teams played in the 10-aside tournament at HopuHopu. A magic day was had by all - with plenty of great rugby on display and an awesome turnout of parents and supporters. The Raglan 9th Grade Green team proved to be a strong side and knocked out 3 teams on their way to the final, and were the eventual ârunners upâ of the grade. The draw had Raglan play at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, before the final at 4pm - where they came up against the fresh legged and well drilled Te Rapa team, who had had a bye at 3pm. The gutsy and determined Raglan boys never gave up and did themselves, their coach Hayden Robbs and all their zealous and somewhat vocal supporters extremely proud. Thanks to all the coaches for their time and encouragement. Vicki and Jo

was all that was standing in the way early this week of the opening of the new Raglan Four Square. The imminent opening of the 350 square metre store was confirmed on Monday by a Foodstuffs spokeswoman who said the New Zealandowned chain had remained 100 percent committed to the Raglan community and to bringing the Four Square brand back to town. The old Raglan Four Square in Bow Street became a SuperValue
supermarket, part of the rival Progressive chain, in August 2012. New Four Square owners Ken and Lesley Curtis have been busy managing the construction of the Bankart Street store, which will have eight part-time staff and 14 off-street customer car parks. Ken started off his grocery career at age 13, as a spud boy packing potatoes at Cambridge New World. He then moved on to Hillcrest New World and PakânSave Mill Street as a grocery buyer before â at the encouragement of the giant Mill Street supermarketâs owner Glen Miller â purchasing Four Square
Waihi Beach. A move to Pirongia Four Square followed before he found himself with the opportunity to build the new Raglan Four Square. Ken said he and his wife were âthrilledâ to be bringing an iconic brand â along with its Pams and Budget lines â back to Raglan and looking forward to getting to know their customers. âOn a personal front my son Sean will also be joining me in running the store,â Ken added. âHeâs just finished his training at PakânSave Te Awamutu and becoming part of the family business is something heâs very excited about.â

Keven Reily (5th from front) training with his first intake of TrainMe security course students
A specialist who has trained elite rescue teams across Asia, Europe and the South Pacific is now teaching a new six-month security course for youth offered by Hamiltonâs private training provider, TrainMe. Keven Reily, has trained elite rescue teams in New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands, Guatemala, Germany, Kazakhstan and 27 US states. And now heâs passing his experience and knowledge on to 17-19 year olds from around the Waikato region who want prepare for their own career in uniform. Keven, who lives in Raglan and commutes to Hamilton, began his role as tutor for TrainMeâs National Certificate in Security this year when the six-month course began for the first time. He says the role is designed to provide skills, development and training to youth aspiring to join the armed forces, police, fire service, security industry and other uniformed roles.
âTrainMeâs National Certificate in Security is a very physical course and students learn hand-to-hand control and restraint techniques, team work and build their fitness to a very high level.â âDuring the course, we cover security law, risk management, conflict resolution and patrol procedures, to name a few things.â âOn completion of the course, students are well-prepared for a uniformed role with the right skills and with a level of fitness that will exceed the minimum standards for their chosen serviceâ he said. The TrainMe Security campus is located in Hamilton on the Waikato Riverâs edge and has a high-ropes course, climbing wall and canoe activities, all of which are put to use during the course. Kevenâs own service career began in the Navy as a sailor where he learned submarine warfare, before becoming a Naval Clearance Diver. He left the military to go into the New Zealand Fire Service as a professional fire-fighter, where he was instrumental in creating the confined space and high-angle
rescue procedures, now used throughout New Zealand. After a stint in the Australian Army and a range of security consulting work around the world, he came back to New Zealand permanently to start a family. Kevenâs passion for those that enroll in the course comes from his own experience of a âhard coreâ youth. âIf I hadnât started in the military at 16 there was a good chance I would have ended up in jail. This course provides youth with an opportunity to use their energy constructively by channeling it into physical and mental preparation for life in serviceâ he said. Graduating students receive a National Certificate in Security Level 2, which exceeds the minimum requirement for employment within the security industry from 1 October 2014. Enrollments for the National Certificate in Security July intake are now open. For more information for this course or other TrainMe courses, visit www.trainme.org.nz.

In Brief: Workshop to look at CBD expansion Raglan Community Board will hold a workshop next month over Waikato District Council-generated rezoning plans that would pave the way for major expansion of the townâs commercial heart. The board last week agreed to a July 8 workshop to go through a proposed plan change whose main thrust is to rezone 25 properties on the fringes of the CBD from living to business. As council general manager strategy & support Tony Whittaker put it, the workshop will help âget all our ducks in a rowâ before the rezonings are recommended for public notification in October. A proposed playgrounds strategy will also be discussed at the workshop.
Re-siting of sewer box put in motion A stink over the siting of a sewer control box slap-bang in the way of the view from a popular Manu Bay vantage point has been resolved, with a staff assurance at last weekâs community board meeting that âthe box was put in the wrong place and will be re-sitedâ. The offending box will be moved to a new spot below the lookout and out of the âviewing lineâ, and the cost will be shared between the council and Whaanga Coast sewerage linkup contractors Spartan Construction.
Jetty work seen as an opportunity lost T the Bow Street jetty may seem a
he new footpathing going in at
step or two in the right direction but it has put âplace makingâ advocates about town on the back foot. A handful of âplace makingâ group members took the opportunity at the public forum preceding last Tuesdayâs Raglan Community Board meeting to point out the work had effectively scuppered their own well-publicised plans to undertake a community-driven project in the same area.
Longtime Raglan identity Roydon Hartstone was among the harshest critics of the current jetty work. âIf you establish concrete paths you then define how it [the jetty area] will progress,â he said. âYou have a very keen group of people who wished to be involved in any activity there.â Sheryl Hart added that any opportunities for âplace makingâ were âall dictated to now by concreting work that seems to have come out of the blueâ. John Lawson suggested it would be useful if the community board was alerted and had some input âwhen this sort of thing
comes upâ, but Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley defended the process and his lodging of a CRM â a âcustomer relationship managementâ request â to have the jetty work done. âThe jetty issue is one Iâve taken up because of complaints,â he said. âThe whole area was a mudbath.â He also emphasised it had taken about a year for the council to get on to what he described as âfootpath repairsâ. âIâve been in this job a while now and regularly get approached to tidy the town up in some way,â he said. âI take these opportunities when they arise.â
Blonde locks to go for Starship Describing his hair as a âbit of a mop,â the time has come for 15-yearold Flynn Bellerby to chop off his mane of blonde hair and what better way to do it than to shave for a good cause â more precisely - to raise money for Starship Childrenâs Hospital. âIâve been growing my hair for ages,â said Flynn of his long locks that reach almost halfway down his back. With his mane getting a little dirty and with mum Sue Bellerby ânot too keenâ on the hair anymore, Flynn decided to cut it all off. He chose the Starship Foundation as his charity of choice. Donations to
Starship are an extra to Government funding and provide a variety of initiatives such as building refurbishments, new technology, vital research, boosted family support, preventative programmes and staff training. In addition to this, $1.5 million is needed annually to help fund the National Air Ambulance Service. Heâs planned for the chop to take place this Saturday 21st June on the winter solstice and shortest (hair) day of the year. All proceeds from donations will go to Starship Childrenâs Hospital. Support Flynnâs shave for a cause by popping into Jet to make a donation or call 825 5813 for more info. Maki Nishiyama

In Brief: Rust find delays town library upgrade The discovery of rust in some structural steel has put back by about a fortnight â to mid-July â the expected completion date for the Raglan library /council office upgrade, the community board heard last week. But there was good news too, with the reroofing of the former Post Office to eliminate leaking complete and recent heavy rain proving the buildingâs now watertight. Meantime a âHouse to Homeâ initiative led by a place making group and librarian Merren Tait has come up with a concept for recycling the existing furniture, creating a childrenâs area and adding interest and creativity to the library space.
Council probes apparent local delivery bungle A Waikato District Council review has begun into why many Raglan ratepayers apparently never received their copies of a glossy publication aimed at encouraging people to have their say on the councilâs draft annual plan for the new financial year starting next month. General manager strategy & support Tony Whittaker told the community board last week the councilâs communications team was talking with the distributors over the matter, which he said âdamaged councilâs credibilityâ. While there were also delivery problems elsewhere in the district âRaglan was certainly the worstâ, he added.
Parents graduate course designed for them
T
uesday June 3rd was a special day for those parents who had committed the previous 14 to learning new skills to be better parents and support their preschool children get the most out of their incredible years. Labour MP Nanaia Mahuta was there with them at the Raglan Bowling Club to talk about her own experiences as a mother of a young child and to present graduation certificates and congratulations to the Raglan mumâs and dads. âYou know the best time for me is when my son is tucked up in bed and I read him a story and he relaxes and we have this special time together. I commit to this no matter how busy my day has been and he knows he can rely on it. We both look forward to that timeâĻ if I had my way I would read the book over and over again,â Nanaia said. As each mum and dad received their certificate they were offered the opportunity to share just how they had found the course designed to empower child and parent. Mother of four, Tahi Maybee said a major benefit of the incredible years course was that because it ran for 14 weeks she was able to take in the information and parenting
2014 Incredible Years Parenting course graduates and Labour's Nanaia Mahuta skills gained so well that they were becoming second-nature to her. "Because I could retain the information, the strategies I learned are becoming habits. The focus is on spending quality time with our children and giving positive acknowledgements and praise, which are the foundation of the parenting skills pyramid. The aim is not only about preventing unwanted behaviour, but guiding our children to be happy and content in themselves, and encouraging the development of their emotional intelligence". She says she would definitely recommend the course to other parents. Jenny McGuire who has a three year old
daughter said the course has made her a more confident parent when dealing with issues that are common that all parents experience no matter what their background. âIt teaches you to develop positive relationshiips with your children. They gain confidence as they go forward.â Course facilitator Jane Bisset was full of praise for the parents. âWe had well over 50% graduate which is above the norm. It is a real commitment to attend the course but what comes out of it are life-long benefits and the other part is these parents have found a new community of parents and families to be with,â she said. Snow on the beach and the Ray White mid winter swim Saturday 28th June will see 12 tonnes of snow dropped onto Papa Hua No. 3 Block, adjacent to the Boat Ramp and Te Kopua Domain for the Raglan Community House 2014 Snow on the Beach Festival. This event is being held in conjunction with the Ray White Mid Winter Swim. The âSnowfieldâ will open at 11am and
the swim will take place at 11.30am. Come along and have loads of fun in the snow â make a snowman or a snow angel - and if you are brave enough, join in the madness of the mid winter swim! If you are swimming, make sure you dress up and compete for the best dressed costumes! Raglan Community House will provide free soup and hot drinks and food will also be for sale.
Music and the Bouncy Castle (and maybe the odd lolly scramble!) will complete the fun filled activities. Helpers will be needed at 10am to help spread the snow so if you can help, bring along a spade or a rake to help us prepare the snowfield. The back up day for this event (in case of bad weather) is Saturday 12th July. See you there.
Councillorâs Column
enjoy our place.
With winter upon us now, itâs fair to say we did have a great summer season, particularly with more and more attractions for people wanting to come and
Council has now completed year three of the long term plan meetings, which this year were done in the communities of Tuakau, Ngaruawahia and Raglan. Thank you to those who made submissions and came to the hearings. There were some consistent themes across the District, the state of rural roads, ageing footpaths and toilets. Council proposes to put more money into these issues as supported through the consultation process of the Annual plan feedback.
Council also plans to fund the building of a new Community hall at Meremere , this a Community in long need of such an amenity. Council recently launched a new economic development website called www.openwaikato. co.nz this is a window of opportunity for businesses to get information and support for setting up business in our district Check it out . There is still a lot of work happening in Raglan, such as a new water main in Norrie Ave connecting to the water tower and the main that went along Wainui Road last year. Good progress is being made with the Whaanga coast wastewater system and I would encourage those that have the opportunity to join it, do so before work is completed. Some homes are already connected. The slip repair at Manu Bay is finally under way, so please take care with all the work happening in the area. The revamped library and council office is progressing and I want to thank those who have
been involved working with staff to how it may be fitted out. You may have notice new paths been built around the Jetty at the bottom of Town, this is a project that I have been working on with staff for some time after complaint. Hope you enjoy it. A lot of work continues in developing the Waikato District Civil Defence Management, this is brought about by the Council taking more responsibility of the Districts own Civil Defence, I look forward to more Community involvement. Council plans to notify in October this year a proposed plan change for Raglan. Further consultation will be undertaken but the proposal is to re-zone the southern side of Bankart St including the corner of Wainui Rd, the southern side of Wallis St, which potentially includes nine ī properties, starting from the Hotel entrance. The ī ī proposal is to change it from Living to Business ī Town Centre overlay, this has come about with ī ī ī
through consultation on the Raglan Town Centre Spatial plan and the need in the future for more flexibility of land use. Also rezoning part of Tasman Lands Ltd property on State highway 23 from rural to Light industrial( to reflect the conditions of approved Consent) The proposal also includes rezoning from Coastal to Pa Zone land adjacent to the Poihakena Marae. Council will start shortly the revaluation of properties in the District which is legally required to be done every three years, information will be advised through the Link publication shortly. Remember that all Council agendas and minutes are on the www.waikatodistrict.co.nz If you would like to discuss council issues with me please contact me through the council office on 8258129 or my mobile 0211553778 or email me clint.baddeley@waidc.govt.nz Regards Clint Baddeley, District Council

The documentary âCatkillerâ depicts Earles Place Raglan as being connected with a serial Catkiller who resides in Raglan. We wish to clarify that Earles Place has no such connection and in no way are we suggesting that the alleged catkiller resides in Earles Place. We have been in communication with the Police, who confirm that the people of possible interest live in a different location. We express our sincere apologies for any embarrassment and distress that may have been caused to the residents of Earles Place. From the filmmakers

TO THE YOUNG LADY WITH light brown/mousey hair in a ponytail driving a white station wagon/ hatch backâĻ On Thurs 12th June @ 2:45pm you left something behind at Ohautira Rd landingâĻ Namely your beautiful Black Cat with white on its chest! It was calling out in distress but unfortunately I wasnât able to get close enough to it to do the humane thing of re-housing or taking to the vet rather than leave a domestic cat to the elements of winter â shame on you! Ohautira Rd Resident.
