In  Raglan  the  problem  is  reduced  by  being  in  a  low  decile Â

area,  with  lower  than  average  fees,  and  up  to  now  it  has  been  possible  to  make  arrangements  with  patients  so  that  no  one  has  gone  without  treatment. Another  change  in  the  budget  affected  the  elderly.  Labour  and  the  Greens  had  supported  moving  to  end  means  tests  for  rest  home  care.  The  budget  had  frozen  that  change. Kevin  praised  the  initiative  of  Raglan  Greens  in  setting  up  the  series  of  meetings  and  hoped  it  would  be  followed  elsewhere  in  the  country.  Another  series  of  meetings  may  be  run  in  the  spring.    John  Lawson

RAGL AN APPLIANCE SERVICING

ARBORIST

OPINION: Value for money by Ian McKissack I  have  a  healthy  respect  for  knowing  where  my  taxes  go,  whether  to  central  or  local  JRYHUQPHQW ,W LV GLIÂżFXOW WR NHHS D FORVH H\H RQ what  smiling  John  Key  and  his  courtiers  are  up  to  because  they  are  down  there  in  Wellington  and  we  have  to  trust  their  P.R.  teams  and  the  media.  But  where  local  government  is  concerned  we  are  better  placed  to  see  where  our  rates  are  going.  While  it  is  safer  with  the  road  to  Hamilton  in  good  condition,  the  amount  of  attention  it  seems  to  need  is  considerable.  Who  makes  these  decisions?  On  what  criteria?  We  may  not  be  doing  the  hard  graft  but  we  are  signing  the  cheques. A  complex  pipe  laying  activity  I  am  paying  for  has  thwarted  my  daily  saunter  down  to Â

AUTOMOTIVE

Lorenzen  Bay.  Apparently  it  has  become  necessary  to  send  the  wastewater  from  new  subdivisions  that  drains  to  the  bottom  of  Lorenzen  Bay  Road  up  to  the  Cambrae  Road  part  of  the  system,.  I  have  no  idea  why,  but  it  looks  expensive.  Instead  of  destroying  the  walkway  steps  downward  from  Cambrae  they  have  laid  pipes  underground  using  a  very  new  complex  machine  which  burrows,  like  a  mole.  I  wonder  what  it  cost. I  am  particularly  interested  in  where  my  rates  go  as  there  is  a  new  local  body  proposal  to  cut  out  the  Raglan  bus  on  Sundays  and  public  holidays.  This  is  such  a  petty  idea  when  you  think  about  the  huge  amounts  spent  elsewhere.
