Underthe umbrella of the Whaingaroa/Raglan Destination Management Organisation (WRDMO), the Whaingaroa/Raglan iHub is Raglan’s visitor information one-stop shop catering for both locals and visitors.
The iHub is located where the old i-site was in the Raglan museum foyer. The iHub is run by a team of dedicated volunteers who are affectionately known as the "ihubbers." One of those volunteers is John Grenside, who also happens to be an active member of our local Volunteer Coastguard crew.
I had the opportunity recently to learn more about how he became involved with the iHub team and what he loves about being in Raglan.
What inspired you to come and live in Raglan?
I was born and raised in Taumarunui, Ruapehu is my mountain and Whanganui is my river. I spent the last 40 years in Hamilton, along with my wife Sandra, running a distribution business that supplied cafes in the Waikato. However, my next love after family is surfing, which led us to seek a change in direction and lifestyle. Finally, we made the move to Raglan a year ago and became one of the shiny new people who have set up in Rangitahi.
Can you tell us a bit about the Whaingaroa/ Raglan iHub?
The iHub is made up of a diverse group of people of all ages and experience, all with the common goal of making visitors feel welcome. Not much has changed when you read the history of Whaingaroa-Raglan. Māori were very giving with their time, labour, food, and land. Possibly, if they had known the outcome, it would have been a different story, but that's a whole story on its own!
How did you become involved with the iHub team?
IHUB VOLUNTEER PROFILE WITH JOHN GRENSIDE
SPOTLIGHT ON THE WHAINGAROA/RAGLAN I-HUB
I saw a request for volunteers on the Waikato volunteering website and was looking for a way to become involved in the community and form new connections. When I met with Jacqueline Anderson, the iHub Manager, it was a good fit since my work time is flexible and it was a small commitment in actual time. In-depth knowledge of Raglan was not a prerequisite but more of a willingness to listen, and the use of Google has been invaluable.
What do you love about being in Raglan?
I was obviously drawn to Raglan for the surf and sun, but since setting up home here, my wife and I have come to realise that the town is much more than just a surf destination. There are not many small towns of less than 4000 people that can boast the best left-hand break, two radio stations, a movie theatre, performing arts, an artisan bakery, a brewery, a mountain bike park, a big arts and craft scene, a night venue the envy of larger cities, every club under the sun you could think of, and great food and coffee. But more importantly, it's the people. We love the diversity of cultures that make up Raglan, underpinned by local hapu/ iwi, who have obviously shaped a lot of what makes Whaingaroa-Raglan what it is today. It’s also cool to hear and see the different languages/ cultures that are contributing to the richness of Raglan.
What is your role as a volunteer at the iHub?
As a volunteer at the iHub, I serve as a conduit between locals, businesses, clubs, and anything Raglan, and the visitors who are looking for information about and on Raglan and to a lesser degree, the Waikato region. The most common questions are: what can we do, what can we see, and where can I stay?
The iHub is being very proactive in setting up a digital platform, which will aid visitors in finding that information, plus it advertises our businesses including accommodation, activity providers, cafes and much more. We are also a retailer of all things crafty that are produced in Raglan. This helps fund iHub operations. What do you think are the biggest challenges for Raglan?
The biggest challenge for Raglan is to keep that uniqueness that is Raglan. We are still super popular going by the numbers of visitors coming through the iHub combined with Kiwis wanting a change in lifestyles. I don't think anyone wants Raglan to become the next Byron Bay. Hopefully, with the work of the DMO, Raglan Naturally, the Raglan Business Chamber, other organisations and community, we can proactively influence our visitor development while keeping Raglan's special vibe. Clean water and sea would be the other challenge, along with sustainable development.

COVER STORY: INTERVIEW WITH PEGGY OKI
Peggy Oki is a skateboarder, surfer, artist, activist, adventurous spirit, and so much more. She was the only female member of the Zephyr skateboard team in the 1970’s (featured in the documentary “Dogtown & Z-Boys”).
Beyond skateboarding and surfing, Peggy is an artist, educator, environmental activist, public speaker, rock climber, and world traveller. She has been an advocate for cetacean rights and protections for 40+ years.
Peggy founded “Origami Whales Project” in 2004 and welcomed global public participation (of all ages) to participate in creating environmental art installations to raise awareness about threats to cetaceans across the world. Peggy has shared her passions and activism through public speaking for years.
When did you take an interest in the Maui Dolphin and what encouraged you to get involved?
Over 20 years ago I first learned about the Māui at an event at the Town Hall. Upon becoming aware of how endangered the Māui Dolphin was, I felt I needed to help in whatever way I could.
Since that day, I have volunteered to coordinate art actions to raise awareness and be a voice for popoto. Whenever open for submissions, we send postcards and messages including our now over 9,600 'Let’s Face It' Visual Petitions* to the NZ government.
How do you hope your art helps the cause?
Art can be a universal language, visually drawing viewers and communicating our concerns.
How did the community get involved ?
Included are 55 Māui Dolphins drawn on the origami to represent the estimated remaining population of individuals of age 1 year or older. Messages have been written on some along with the wish that Popoto will be saved from extinction and in the future to thrive as they did over 5 decades ago.
The 'Entanglement of Māui' piece is now complete, and I invite all interested to take a look.
What do you love about the time you spend in Whāingaroa?
I love the community, environmental and arts especially, the native birds, and the summers in Whāingaroa.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS THE PLIGHT OF M Ā UI DOLPHINS
BY EDITH SYMES
The turnout at the scaled down Raglan’s Māui dolphins’ gathering recently may have been on the smaller side, but organisers remain upbeat and hope to bring back the full event next year.
Children and their parents came and went at the venue, the Union Church hall in Stewart St, some playing games and winning prizes with Pare Kore educator Paul Murray while others made origami dolphins which were then crafted into an installation by environmental artist Peggy Oki.
The day was all about community engagement, Katie Lowe of Whaingaroa Environment Centre told the Chronicle of the 100 or so through the doors. Given the good weather WEC was expecting 300, she added, although it was also aware of competing interests that weekend.
WEC traditionally holds its Māui Dolphin Day – to raise awareness of a species on the brink of extinction – in conjunction with Xtreme Zero Waste’s annual raft race down at Papahua reserve.
But Covid has got in the way these past few years, leading to the decision to keep things smaller this time round.
An online event was organised last year, Katie adds, because of restrictions on the size of gatherings; and there
were some well-supported “pop-up” events like local Science Nights in-between times.
Doing something rather than nothing is important, she insists. “Or there’s silence.”
As WEC’s core community event – run now for 15-odd years – Māui Dolphin Day is about educating and enabling the community to take care of its marine environment, says committee member June Penn.
WEC is now focused on researching the health of local waters to see what factors may be contributing to Whāingaroa’s loss of the smallest and rarely seen dolphin, she adds.
“We want to come up with recommendations to engage the community to take action.”
Californian-based artist and surfer Peggy Oki who returns to Raglan most summers has long lent her energies to the cause, creating thousands of origami dolphins over the years to draw attention to the demise of Māui dolphins.
There are believed to be fewer than 50 and they inhabit only the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island.
More than 1000 of the origami variety – made by supporters, including local school students – make up Peggy’s mosaic-style installation which will now be on show downtown at the library.

SHARE THE STOKE; A Q&A WITH ADRENALINE ALLEY
As the world's leading manufacturer of kites and paragliders, Ozone has been providing adrenaline seekers with unparalleled "stoke" for years, a key concept in mind for new owners Morgan Coster and partner Bibiana as they embark on their new journey of heading up Raglan's own Ozone NZ, cleverly cueing the name Adrenaline Alley.
Ozone NZ first made its Raglan debut in 2017, with the previous owner, Matt Taggart, providing the community with means to ride the wind. Since then, the business has grown into a collection house of fun, retailing top-of-the-line kites, paragliders, and foils, all powered by the thrill of the ocean.
After an evening Q&A with the Adrenaline crew (Morgan Coster, Bibiana Peterson, FrancoisXavier, and Alina Kara) it was clear that passion and dedication are at the forefront of this exciting turnover; with a humble beginning –
Morgan and Bibi, what was it that brought you to Raglan initially?
Kiting brought us out here and essentially to one another. When I came here after travelling and saw kiting for the first time, I was immediately convinced, so I packed my bags, put a kite in my hands, and never looked back.
When did you first meet Matt Taggart and fall in with Ozone NZ?
We met at Wainamu Beach while I was living in Hamilton as a tool-maker engineer. The then Ozone R&D team discussed building prototype pieces and how long the process takes from idea to in-hand product. Chiming in, I told the crew I could have those pieces in their hands by the next day. We have been mates ever since, and by the end of 2016, I started working for him in the retail shop down Volcom Lane, helping to grow the business by learning and puzzling pieces together till they fit.
Where did the name Adrenaline Alley originate from?
We have been talking about changing the name for a while now to better encompass the shop's nature. Being the leading distributor for Ozone NZ, and with a building repertoire of brands, like Armstong foils, WayDoo, and more, the original name felt restricting. In addition, as all these sports are adrenaline-based, the name Adrenaline Alley better suits the shop's personality.
How did the change of hands and transition go over?
Matt and I had been playing with this idea for a long time, so it has been in the pipeline since the early days. Going from an engineer to the owner has been a remarkable journey, jumping in at the deep every step of the way. With that in mind, there has been a lot of learning over the years. This business has been an incredibly educational and rewarding process that we will continue to learn from.
What is your mission for Adrenaline Alley?
Take over New Zealand by selling the stoke. In truth, we want to get more people, old and young involved in this ever-growing sport we love and share the adrenaline-based froth it inspires.
What has been your favorite part of this process?
Being able to create it, taking it from an idea, playing around with different pieces and concepts to build what it is today. Now the shop and its
BY JORDAN BASTIAN
copious resources allow us to welcome new people to the sport in arguably the best playground we call home. But, in all honesty, it all comes down to sharing the stoke.
For instance, winging has attracted such a vast demographic, from the older windsurfers guys down to the young groms pushing the limits on a foil, creating such a unique community; and it is one where everyone looks out for one another, no matter what. From helping to launch kites to sharing gear, everyone is there for a good time.
Bibi, what about you?
As the cheerleading squad, I have been able to watch this business grow in the incredible ways it has, and watching "Morgs" go from employee to the all-hands-on-deck owner has been an incredibly inspiring journey to be a part of.
Are there any exciting plans for the shop looking forward?
Wind is free, and creating fun from it is easier than ever with the technology we now have in the shop. Getting more kids involved in this endorphinreleasing and stoke-providing sport is something I would like to add to the community.
In light of sharing the "froth," as Bibi would say, the team at Adrenaline Alley will offer a free foil lesson to whoever reads this article and makes it down to the shop first.
So what are you waiting for? Head down to 2 John Street and join the adrenaline movement. To stay connected with the Adrenaline team, check out their website: https://www.ozonenz.nz/ or give them an Insta follow @adrenalinealley_

ARMSTRONG FOILS AT THE 2023 WATERBOURNE BEACH FESTIVAL
public in 2017 after lots of development and problem solving. In 2017/18 the sport began to take off globally as people began to realise the advantage of foiling, combined with social media's reach the sport of foiling exploded.
What are the different products you produce and who are they mainly targeted towards?
Today Armstrong has a complete range of foils, wings, and boards that cover everyone from beginner to expert. The Armstrong goal is to get people out there enjoying the feeling and excitement of foiling but also the experience of being out there in the elements, harnessing the powers of nature... it's good for the soul!
You have been described in your industry as 'leading the world'. How has the business progressed to the point it is now and what key factors have contributed?
As a company we are very motivated to be at the cutting edge of the sport and our passion is spread across the various disciplines. Our goal is to make top quality equipment to explore and enjoy the sensations created.
For sure we are a major player but that is just a result of our drive and passion to create equipment that gets us and our friends out there having fun and improving.
Sponsorship and events are obviously an important aspect of the company. What is in the pipeline moving forward?
The 2023 Waterbourne Beach Festival was held at Mount Maunganui in early March and hosted by the Global Wingsports Association (GWA). It's the first time the GWA event has been hosted outside of Europe.
The Festival is a wing foiling competition consisting of three disciplines: race, freestyle and wave - bringing together some of the best wingfoil athletes in the world. Armstrong Foils, a business originating in Raglan was a sponsor of the festival and we caught up with the team to hear about the event.
For those not familiar with foiling can you explain the concept? How do people describe the experience?
Foiling is often likened to riding powder on a snowboard due to the floating sensation which is highly addictive. Hydrofoils have been around in the sailing and board riding world for more than 20 Years, but due to the advancement in tech in the last five years, the sport has become far more accessible and easier. A hydrofoil kit is made up of a specialized board that features a wingshaped foil attached to its underside. The foil is designed to create lift, allowing the board to rise out of the water as it gains speed. This reduces drag and allows the rider to move much faster than with a traditional surfboard or kite board. As seen with the Americas Cup and Sail GP the advent of the hydrofoil has changed the face of sailing due to the incredible efficiency that foils bring, much higher top speeds (40knots) and a better wind range makes for very exciting sailing and viewing. The hydrofoil allows a boat or wing foiler to travel up to 3 times wind speed.
In the open ocean, the hydrofoil allows riders to ride open ocean swell instead of relying on a breaking wave. If you have ever been on a boat and seen the rolling waves and mind surfed riding ocean swell instead of a breaking wave, the hydrofoil makes this dream a reality. You can literally ride an open ocean bump for kilometers.
There are several different disciplines to enjoy Foiling.
Wing Foiling: A handheld wing to propel a hydrofoil board through the water. It’s the fastest growing Foiling discipline
Wake Foiling: Riding a standing wake from a boat
Kite Foiling: Allows kiting in low winds
Tow Foiling: Being propelled into waves using a jet ski or boat
Surf Foiling (Prone Foiling): Paddling into waves like traditional surfing. Once the board has forward momentum, the rider is lifted out of the water to ride above the wave. Advanced riders can ride a wave, then pump back out to link up multiple waves to create one long ride (world record is around 3 hours on foil).
SUP Foiling: Stand up Paddle foiling
Wind Foiling: Windsurfing, but on foil
Can you talk about the origins of the business? How did you come to enter the world of foiling design and production?
Armstrong Foils was born right here in Raglan with Armie Armstrong at the helm, Rob Whittall, Andrew McGregor and Bryce Rhodes all came in to support the quest to create ultra high quality foils and associated equipment. It all started back in 2015 with just an idea that then turned into prototypes before releasing to the
Straight off the back of the GWA event, we had our team attend the Sail GP event in Christchurch where Armstrong sponsor the Inspire programme aimed to support Youth into sailing and foiling. Armstrong will be involved in the Inspire programme as Sail GP moves around the globe, as well as sponsor other events that bring awareness to the sport.
At a local level have you seen an increase in the sport? Does Raglan have the conditions to support it? Will we see more of it?
Raglan is a fantastic location for foiling, we have great conditions for all foil disciplines. We are blessed with wind and waves so almost everyday you can get foiling here in Raglan. We have seen great local growth, lots of people wing foiling but also surf and SUP foiling is now growing as people begin to realise the potential. On top of that Morgan at Adrenaline Alley runs foil lessons and gets people foiling in a matter of hours. Morgan also has a wide range of stock for all disciplines.
We have recently had Armstrong's pro riders here in Raglan and they were all blown away by how amazing this place is for all foils disciplines. We were towing in at the bar with them, wing foiling at Manu and the harbour entrance as well as some Surf and Sup foiling at the beach and Mussel Rock. We are in a foiling paradise right here.

WE CHAT TO ANDREW MCGREGOR FROM ARMSTRONG FOILS
Armstrong Foils was a sponsor of the 2023 Waterbourne Beach Festival, held at Mount Maunganui in early March of this year.
Ashleigh Lawless is a freelance recipe developer, food stylist, writer, art director and creative living in Raglan. She talks about her creative studio ‘The Intimate Table’ and how Raglan is transforming the evolution of her work.
Describe what you do and what ‘The Intimate Table’ is all about.
Hello! I write, edit, photograph and develop recipes, a bunch of food stuff really. The Intimate Table is a culinary studio producing recipes and food content designed around brands I partner with, recipes that capture essence and energy unique to their context.
One of my guiding philosophies is that beautiful food relies on the basic premise that it is the food of the moment. A cold nectarine by the sea in summer, hair dripping with salt, a leftover chicken and stuffing sandwich 26/12, cold blue mornings of buttered toast and velvet bitter coffee.
What is your background ? How did you get involved in recipe development and food writing?
I come from a background in graphic design and visual communications but my world has always revolved around food. I come from a household where food is the love language and all great conversation and connection has always been over a shared meal.
The Intimate Table has really been the culmination of the last 7 years in the design industry and the ceaseless inspiration I derive from food. It felt very organic to turn my focus
THE INTIMATE TABLE
WITH RECIPE DEVELOPER ASHLEIGH LAWLESS
to the world of food writing, transferring my skills in brand and design to the creation and integration of ritual and recipe.
Food is a huge part of your life. How has Raglan reflected that passion?
Intertwined into the fabric of this coastal town is the unique connection the people have to community which has allowed for small and vibrant food-focused businesses to thrive. The collective here is rich with story and narrative.
As the project evolves I am finding myself increasingly drawn to the stories, places, products and recipes colouring the narrative of New Zealand’s ever-evolving food scene as well as the extended world of atmosphere, alchemy and the people behind it all.
I am currently exploring what ‘New Zealand’ means through the lens of cuisine, hopefully in a way that avoids pretension, staying clear of trends, nothing too fancy or tokenistic. The next chapter of The Intimate Table hopes to capture the stories that connect us to people, delving into the portals of tradition, the deep emotion linked to food and the symbolic layers recipe has historically held.
Raglan has inspired a pivot from simply writing recipes to exploring the stories and people behind them.
How do people get in touch?
Keep an eye on @theintimatetable for the next iteration of the project kicking off next month. To inquire about projects of any kind get in touch via my website www. theintimatetable.co.nz.
RECIPE: SOUR AND CELERY
Serves 2 | Prep time 5min | Total time 5min
With the arrival of Autumn there comes a sparse speckling of perfect frozen mornings, all peppermint air and the most delicious pale blue smell. The sky defrosts from icy white to arctic green and finally to a breath of cobalt. A juice reflecting the refreshing, bitter-bite crisp of the middle months. This is ‘zing’ in all its glory.
Makes 2 medium-sized glasses
3-4 large celery stalks - washed and trimmed
2 medium-sized sour granny smith apples - peeled and quartered
1 juicy lime or two small
1 small handful of mint
Push the celery, apple, lime and mint through the juicer, pushing the soft mint leaves through with the crisp stalks of the celery. Serve over a generous amount of ice.

TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH
WITH RUBY GIBBS CREATOR OF THE MENTAL HEALTH TOOLBOX
Kaleb Kingi has lived in Whāingaroa his whole life. He works for Xtreme Zero Waste and has recently become a father, with his partner Savon, to their beautiful daughter Ren. We caught up to talk about mental health, fatherhood, and his involvement in Poutama Rites of Passage, an initiative for young men in our community to transition into manhood.
What is your relationship like with your mental health? Is it something that you're thinking about every day?
I try not to think about it too much but, definitely on my low days, I just think about Ren. She's literally the light of my life. I think I have a pretty good relationship with it in general; I'm definitely in tune with my emotions. When there are times I think I want to cry, I just let myself cry, I won't hold it back. You know, in my family I think I'm the most emotional, sensitive one.
What was your relationship like with your mental health when you were younger? Going through all those turbulent years?
As a kid, I was angry at the world, taking it out on everyone else. Yea, it wasn't that great. Because in my childhood, I wasn't taught to talk about my feelings or I just pushed everything down. I definitely felt lonely in my younger years. I could talk to my mum when I was younger but when I got to my teenage years, I just stopped. That's what I realised getting older as well, is that I'm not alone and I have a lot of support, I just have to ask or talk about it.
When you've been at the lowest points in your life, what's kept you pushing through and waking up the next day?
Definitely my family and my friends, thinking about them. I definitely wouldn't want to put them through something that they shouldn't need to go through, and also for myself. I am always trying to be strong for myself. I’ve always had this thought that if you can't look after yourself then you can't look after anyone else. My mum says that I wear my heart on my sleeve and I'm too much of a giver, I need to start being selfish. So I try to be strong for myself first.
What about being out here in Raglan; do you feel pretty connected to your surroundings out here?
Yea it's good because Raglan has pretty much been my whole life, I've grown up here. Even with work, I use it as my time to think because when I'm at home, I don't have time to think for myself, I just have to get on with it. Work is kind of like a family up there now.
What sort of impact has fatherhood had on the way you see yourself and the way you interact with the world?
Well I've always wanted to have a baby and then when she did come, it was exactly what I wanted and more. I didn't expect it to be so, hmm, what’s the word, well it's challenging but it's all worth it just for her smile. She is my motivation to be a better person, a better man. I definitely wanted a boy to start, but when it got closer to the due date, I really wanted a girl! I wanted that connection. I’m trying to be more soft. I guess my priorities have changed but I'm ok with that, she's number one. I'm definitely still keen on a good night out but not every weekend! One thing I've definitely learned from not having my own father around is that I want to be present. That is the most important thing.
How did you get involved with the Poutama Rites of Passage programme? And how was that experience for you?
Well, Tiaki, one of the leaders, I've known him since I was about 14, and throughout the years he kept asking me to come on it as a young man but I kept saying no. I was too scared to talk about my feelings. But then last year he asked me again and he said that a few of my good mates were gonna be doing it too so I kinda had to do it! The hardest thing for me, to just say yes, was leaving Ren. We had to spend four nights away and it was my first time leaving her for that long. That was the hardest challenge for me but when I got there, it was amazing. I went there for myself, for my own journey, to learn about myself and obviously to help the young men. But I just thought of it as my own journey. Listening to all the others' stories and their lives, I realised how much I had in common with them, with the young men and the mentors. And seeing my own mates grow and be vulnerable too. It was pretty special. We had a sweat lodge and we
were in there for two hours, it was pretty ruthless but hearing the boys open up and be vulnerable with me and everyone else just made me feel lucky.
Do you think you'll do it again?
Maybe in the future, maybe not anytime soon. It took a little toll on me, coming back from so much positivity and then back into real life, it was pretty weird. It definitely took an emotional toll.
What are some of the lessons that you've learned through your mental health journey?
I've learned and am still learning actually, to be patient. I try to be patient
and open minded. Those are definitely the most important things that have stayed with me my whole life. And to be thankful. I try to be aware of myself. I watched this thing a while ago and it said being happy is easy, so we have to learn how to deal with what happens when we’re not happy.
Finally, what are some of the tools in your toolbox?
Cuddles with Ren, cuddles with Savon. My biggest thing is listening to music; music for me is everything. Whatever type of genre there is, there's something that you can connect with and that's my escape. Baby, partner, music!

Ruby Gibbs chats to Kaleb Kingi.
Migration is one of the most important, multifaceted, and sometimes controversial issues of our time, and films are a great way to delve deeper into these topics and engage people in open dialogue. There is a link between migration and mental health, and film director Elisabeth Denis wants to talk about it.
How would you describe your work as an artist?
I am a French-Canadian interdisciplinary artist whose tools to tell stories usually bifurcate towards filmmaking and literature. I am interested in relational aesthetics, confessional writings, interactive installations, community-oriented projects, and political and social art. My method of work often starts with a seed that is present and found in my own life, a concern, or social questions. Detectivelike, I then interrogate people to integrate their story or their thoughts to my work. None of my projects would have been possible and viable without the participation of the public offering themselves in a vulnerable and open state of mind. The public always acts as a reflection for my own concerns.
What has inspired you to produce this particular documentary?
The seed of this project started with my own journey as a migrant. I came across a few situations that were very difficult to deal with during the process of immigrating, which left me in a difficult mental state at the time. I became pregnant and miscarried while I was waiting for my partner visa and I felt unsupported by the current system even though at that point I had been in the country for about 4 years, working, paying taxes, and contributing to my community and the land I walked on daily. This is only a slice of my story, the rest will be told in the documentary. Raglan is a melting pot of immigrants,
WITH ELISABETH DENIS
and so let me tell you, the immigration stories I’ve heard here are countless. It is time to create a space for those stories to be told. Individuals have agreed to share their experiences, some while remaining anonymous in order to protect their privacy; others are willing to reveal their identity.
The current global estimate is that there were around 281 million international migrants in the world in 2020, which equates to 3.6 per cent of the global population. The 2018 NZ census showed that 27.4 %of people counted were not born in New Zealand, up from 25.2 percent in 2013.
I wish to produce a documentary about gently unearthing the untold stories of migrants in New Zealand. Telling the story of migrants, collectively, aims to bring awareness to what migration can be like in the eyes of someone who did not experience it. Other migrants can relate by recognizing similarities in their own story. This is a safe space for migrants to be heard and seen.
Who have you involved to tell the story and start the open dialogue on this subject?
Individuals in the Waikato who are still in the process of migrating, and others who have received their residency will be interviewed: families, couples on partner visas, work sponsored individuals, migrants who are artists, refugees, immigration lawyers, immigration officers, a member of the Green Party (Ricardo March), a psychologist, and immigration advisers. The origin and age group of each person or group interviewed will differ in order to get a broad kaleidoscope view of as many scenarios as possible.
What is your background in film making?
My film Anthropomorphism won an award for 'best documentary' at Raglan Film Festival in 2019,
and another film Cold-Blooded-DermatopograhicLocutions won the second place in the 'open category' in 2022.
In the past you have directed, edited, produced, acted and created music and sounds for your films. But this time you want to work alongside others including photographer and filmmaker Rejoy Antony Paul, who is also a migrant. What do you need to make this happen?
There is so much more fulfilment in creating collectively and going on a journey with a crew that are well looked after financially.
It is the first time that I'm asking for financial support in order to produce a film, this documentary. The reason being that due to my current visa status (temporary resident), I am unable to apply for any creative funds. The requirement is that everyone included in a creative project must be a permanent resident or citizen. The funds will be used to support the crew financially in order to produce the documentary: the D.O.P, the director, the editor, the 3D animator.
This is the link for anyone who wishes to donate. There are 19 days left to contribute, I am at 40% of my goal... https://www.boosted.org.nz/projects/ black-rainbow
During the post production phase, Elisabeth created a trailer with Antony Rejoy Paul, Armin Schmidt, Arshan Gill, Marten Ten Broek and Jose G Cano to act as a taste of her vision and aesthetic style, a taste of what is yet to be produced. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnkffumfheU

REGISTRATIONS OPEN FOR ‘THE HATCH’, AN EMERGING ARTISTS EXHIBITION FOR RAW
Creative expression flows through the very taps in this corner of the west coast, guided by the presence of Karioi, the black sands that ebb and flow across the coast and the constant hum of the Moana. One of the cornerstones of Raglan’s artistic landscape is the Raglan Arts Weekend (RAW), and this year marks the 13th annual open studio arts event, showcasing the eclectic and creatively diverse arts community in Whāingaroa.
As sights are set on RAW 2023, the event aims to celebrate, acknowledge and be responsive to the needs of the creative community. This year, RAW is evolving to include ‘The Hatch’, an Emerging Artists Exhibition within the Town Hall over the open studio weekend, which aims to support and promote the next generation of rising stars.
‘The Hatch’, made possible by a new RAW partnership with Rangitahi, will be managed by Caleb Osborne and Miriam Collins, who are both local emerging artists and actively involved in the arts sector in the Waikato. "Within the arts sector, there are numerous barriers emerging artists often face when they first set out, such as availability of studio and exhibition spaces, gallery commission costs, and no real support networks to guide artists through," says Caleb. “We’re hoping to help artists navigate this through providing a platform, exhibiting materials and guidance around the promotion and exhibiting process,” he says.
‘The Hatch’ is going to don the space of the Raglan Town Hall in the Raglan Arts Weekend, which will run over Labour weekend, 21st to 23rd October 2023. There will be an exhibition opening on the 20th, with the exhibition running from the 21st- 23rd. This will see approximately 15 emerging and upcoming local artists showcase their creative works for the community and RAW visitors. The amount of works artists can exhibit will depend on size and how they will need to be displayed. For larger works, there will be space for roughly 3-4 works per artists and for smaller sized works between 6-8, but this also depends on final artist numbers.
The team is on the hunt for emerging artists to apply for one of the 15 spots up for grabs. “We’ve endeavored to make the application process as smooth as possible,” says Caleb. “The only two requirements are that you identify with the emerging artist definition on our website, and that you live locally in the Whaingaroa area,” he says. “We are defining ‘emerging artist’ as those who do not have major gallery representation and prominent exhibiting or commission-based sales experience, have a desire to build their own business capability and are not receiving an income solely from their artistic careers,” says Caleb. “We believe that by defining this category in such a way provides opportunity to artists who would benefit most from being involved in this project.”
“For a sustainable arts community, we believe that platforms such as these are key to unearth potential talent,” says Sam Laity, general manager at Rangitahi.
“‘The Hatch’ really feels like a groundswell incubator,
led by two emerging artists themselves, and we hope it will not only support the next gen of artists but will help Raglan locals and visitors discover new styles and creators.”
Applications will be open for four weeks, from the 3rd of April 2023 until 28th April 2023. Visit www. raglanartsweekend.nz and look at ‘Artist Registration’ for more info on what’s needed to apply. Complete registrations, along with any queries, should be sent to rawemergingartist@outlook.co.nz by 28 April 2023. We will get back to you once applications have closed with confirmation on whether you have been successful or not. For those applicants who are successful, the registration fee is $85.00.

Jenny who is the practice owner, has been working in Raglan for 13 years. She started working at the old medical centre and then had the vision of working from home to be closer to her young boys. Fast forward 8 years and the concept of that one room has grown into a successful business known as The Physio Room Raglan.
Jenny has aligned with a very experienced team of physios that is spread over three sites including the new medical centre and Seed Pilates Studio. The team each bring their unique specialist skills.
All are trained in acupuncture and pilates and have worked in various backgrounds, including hand-therapy, spinal care, professional sports, pelvic/women’s health, and rehabilitation.
‘I couldn’t be prouder of my team and have the upmost trust in their ability to do a professional assessment, accurate diagnosis, and best treatment tailored to each individual’ says Jenny. ‘Also, because they are so good, I am able to fit in a few sneaky surfs!´
The Physio Room is also very excited to welcome Katie back from maternity leave. Katie is solely focusing on women’s/pelvic health at the Seed site.

AN EXPERIENCED TEAM - AT THREE SITES
AN EVENING WITH DICEY WINES AT THE SHACK RAGLAN
Shack dinners are renowned for being a great night of food and drinks. We spoke to co-owner Justin about their most recent dinner hosted alongside Matt Dice of Dicey Wines (available at Raglan Wines and Spirits). We chat to Justin to hear all about the night:
How did the wine tasting dinner evening go with Matt Dice of Dicey wines?
Very well, it was nice for us to do something a little different. We love dinners at The Shack, so when Morv approached us about a Dicey X Shack dinner, we were all in. Matt Dicey is a really neat guy, and it was great to hear him talk about where, why and how his wines are made.
What was the format?
We had a few shared plates to start with, a couple of new releases, a chilled gamay and an orange riesling - both were amazing! Then a pinot gris, chardonnay and pinot noir to go with lamb and risotto. It was really easy and casual, kind of like a family dinner, but without having to do the dishes.
What was the feedback like from those who attended?
We are extremely grateful to everyone that supports what we do at The Shack, and the feedback we got for the food and wine was very positive from a mixed bag of locals and travellers - with lots of requests for more dinners...
Are you wanting to offer another evening anytime soon?
We love them, and we have a few in the pipeline. We'll keep you in the loop.

BUYING YOUR FIRST HOME? CHECK OUT THE LEGAL SQUEEZE PODCAST WITH
GINA JANSEN
Everyone knows that buying your first home can be an absolutely daunting and stressful process. For the uninitiated, there’s not only complex legal processes to overcome, there’s a whole new language that all the property professionals use.
What’s worse is that new buyers are reluctant to ask questions about the buying process and legal jargon for fear of looking stupid. While professionals in the property game (real estate agents, lawyers, mortgage brokers) do their utmost to help new buyers, it takes a bit of time to learn the ropes: the language used, the buying and selling process, and to feel confident enough to ask questions.
Many times, our first home buyer clients have told us that they love that we took the initiative and spent invaluable time with them to explain the buying process and the legal jargon used in the property game from the outset.
Typical questions are: who is the vendor and what are the chattels? What’s the difference between a mortgage and a loan? What do I need to do to go from conditional to unconditional stage? Should I have my lawyer review the purchase contract/offer before I sign it with the real estate agent? What is a presettlement inspection? What happens on settlement day?
At Gina Jansen Lawyers, we are all about supporting and educating our
clients to help them get ahead in life and scale legal ladders. For first home buyers, that includes helping to “line up the ducks”: i.e., loans, obtaining specialist reports (LIM, building, geo tech), the auction process, making the best offer you
can to the seller (vendor), and translating legal jargon into simple to understand terms to help new buyers get through what is a very stressful time. And yes, nobody wants to buy a lemon, right?
What’s supercool is that at Gina Jansen Lawyers, our highly experienced team of lawyers have developed up-to-the-minute educational tools, including eBooks and podcasts, to support our clients to scale any legal ladder.
We have created a “Series” of tech tools which provide expert commentary on various legal topics including: Inland Revenue and tax disputes, property, divorce & relationship property and estate administration. Via our “Property Series”, first home buyers can subscribe to receive our free eBook, A Step-by-Step Guide for First Home Buyers.
This is available by subscribing on the home page of our website Gina Jansen Lawyers www.ginajansen.co.nz. Just scroll to the bottom to easily sign up to receive regular and free legal resources. Gina Jansen, the managing director of Gina Jansen Lawyers, also regularly drops educational podcasts on a multitude of legal topics via our podcast channel, The Legal Squeeze. INTRODUCING IGARTI MARKETING
TheLocal Rag sat down with Jemma of Igarti marketing to learn about her new business.
Tell us about your marketing and management business.
Igarti is a digital marketing service specialising in social media marketing, SEO, running ads, website development, business strategies and more.
When did you get started and what inspired you?
I properly started my business at the end of December 2022 so I've been active for about 3 months now, but before that I was also doing some social media work for the Raglan Club.
The reason I started my business is because I always knew I wasn't supposed to be a traditional 9-5 worker. I have always wanted to do things my way and I want to do things differently. I'm passionate about what I do and if I was a millionaire, I wouldn't charge my clients at all because I just want to help. I'd love to be able to create programmes in the future that assist businesses with their marketing and advertising that won't cost them a cent.
What makes you different from your competitors?
I really like to connect with my clients. I get to know them so I can better understand their morals and goals for their business. I also have the advantage of being so young which I think is a great asset to marketing since teens and young adults spend the most time on social media. I know exactly what draws people in, especially people in ages 16-25.
What do you love about being based in Raglan?
I love our community. Everyone knows everyone and we always help each other. I love how easy it is to support our local businesses. We aren't flooded with dairies or supermarkets or cafes or clothing stores so it's actually really easy to support local; and I want to help everyone see that as well, and expanding our businesses to larger audiences as a lot of them don't even have websites so people who aren't local may not even know they exist.
How do people find out more and get in touch?
I'm contactable 24/7 on my cell 0212322885 or you can email me at admin@igarti.com. Otherwise my facebook and instagram (Igartimanagement) are always open as well as my website www.igarti.com :)

WHAT'S ON AT THE OLD SCHOOL ARTS CENTRE
Craig is an intrepid musical journey man, and has played everything from early Cuban music, Gypsy Jazz, folk, funk to reggae and Celtic music. Based in Prague for 10 years he has now returned to New Zealand. He plays accordion, keyboards, whistle, foot percussion and sings.
Craig says: Some of the better known projects I’ve been involved with over the years include Ardijah (played keys for them for about six months), Ruia Aperahama (I was MD of his band for about four years – he’s the What’’s The Time Mr Wolf guy and the Waiata Marley albums), Mamaku Project and then my own Kiwi band Beyondsemble. I was in 13 bands at one time in Auckland trying to survive as a musician. That’s when I created Beyondsemble. It was an attempt to have a band that at least covered 70% of the styles I liked to play. Recently I was in Alpaca Social Club playing at the Auckland Folk Festival, and with Songware, we will play at Hamsterfest 2023.
Songware delivers the music of old friends doing what they love with joyous harmonies, humour and driving grooves. Expect eclectic awesomeness.
TheOld School Arts Centre has three concerts coming up in April:
SONGWARE: Thursday April 6 7.30pm, doors open 7pm, door-sales $20.
Songware is the new project of seasoned professional musicians Craig Denham and Jo Taylor. Jo comes from a musical family and has been in numerous musical incarnations in the folk and rock world. From the power house alt-folk all-girl band Brazen in the 90s to more recently The Johnnies (all girls, all Johnny Cash). She is a powerful and charismatic presence on stage and sings and plays guitar and Bodhran.
LIVE & LOCAL: Fri April 14 7.30, doors 7pm, Koha entry
Our popular series of showcases for local performers continues this month with Ngaronoa Renata, Odhran Devlin and Ruth Power.
Odhrán (silent d!) hails from County Derry in the north of Ireland. There, he had the fortune to work as a session bass player with some of the finest songwriters of the day. While bass remains his first love, he has written a handful of songs over the years which he accompanies on acoustic guitar. Most of his songs are narrative driven and based on his own
experiences. Odhran also plays songs by people he’s had the fortune to record with. He enjoys sharing the stories of these songs and their writers as well.
After a decade playing in various ensembles spanning jazz, prog & synth rock (Ruthie Veronica, Death in Texas, Teamsquad), Ruth Power - the founder of online piano school, Piano Picnic - returns to her original love of atmospheric neo-classical in this second solo performance for Live & Local.
Ngaronoa Renata will showcase her Taonga Puoro Exploration: an exploration of sound using traditional and contemporary indigenous sounds, interwoven with story - Pūrakau .
Live & Local is supported by Waikato District Creative Communities, Raglan Light & Sound and Mark Frost – Bayleys Real Estate.
ROMAN RUDNYTSKY: Thurs April 20th 7.30, doors open at 7 | Adult $30.00 | RCAC member $25.00 | Concession $25.00. Bookings at: https://creativeraglan. co.nz/
Roman Rudnytsky is an American concert pianist of Ukrainian background. A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York, he has been performing around the world for years and has now played in 100 countries. He has been soloist with many orchestras around the world, played in 35 countries through US Embassies as a “cultural ambassador”, and played recitals on about 70 cruises of P&O (UK) and Cunard ships. He was a prizewinner in ten international and national piano competitions.
He has made 13 tours in New Zealand since the mid-1980’s and has played in Raglan before. The tour this year consists of eleven recitals.

MAGIC MANU – AWE-INSPIRING VISTA WITH
BAYLEYS REAL ESTATE
It’s not very often that properties come on the market at Manu Bay. Mark Frost from Bayleys has listed 596c Wainui Road, a one of a kind property positioned high above one of the world’s best surf breaks with commanding views across the Tasman Sea.
“It’s a privilege to be selling such an awesome home overlooking an iconic world class surf break where the view is always changing, and the sun sets are unparalleled. It is very rare for properties in this location to come on the market and we have had good interest so far from buyers across NZ and overseas, all wanting to get their hands on this unique property”
The Local Rag had a chat to the owner Brian Clement about his passion for his beach pad.
Many locals know and admire your idyllic Manu Bay spot. What do you know about the history of the property?
The house was built around the early 80s and I made contact with the original owner/builder.
He had fond memories of being here and this is where he and his partner raised their family.
I recall his descriptions of setting the very tall foundation poles on this site - a tricky job - all done by hand and by him, way before excavators and diggers were available.
What have you loved most about owning this slice of paradise?
This house has a very special magnetism that gets to you.Without fail on arrival here you step out and the shimmering moving monster ocean hits your senses. Either a whispering endless blue greets you or with just as much appeal a raging crashing and thundering ocean is coming straight at ya!
You feel you are floating over it all.
It makes you feel alive and the spirits really do soar.
What kind of feedback do you get from those who visit or stay there?
Many times when showing visitors, they step out onto the large front deck and sort of gasp.
Comments like,
'This has to be the biggest ocean view I've seen in Raglan'
‘I just love the constantly changing colours and moods of the beautiful seascapes and the skyscapes but
I’m not getting anything done!’
And the ultra classic …’I want to live here!’
What’s the next chapter for you? Why are you moving on from the property?
We are at the stage of life where we want to downsize a bit and move on. We have other property to keep busy with.
Who do you think the house would work well for? What benefits come from being in that position?
It would suit all sorts of holiday makers and families.
With multiple decks, sun and shade catching areas, there is space for
everyone. It’s great for kids because its boundaries are onto the bush reserve. There is room and potential to expand, and accommodation if needed. The proximity to surfing and fishing is awesome.
