MeetAtaera Manu Davey, illustrator, tattoo artist, and avid manga reader. Davey graduated seven years ago from Toihoukura, Gisbournes Māori visual art course, and has been

ART ATTACK: ATAERA MANU DAVEY

tattooing at Raglan Tattoo for the last three years.

Ataera’s work explores dimensionality, through a combination of graphic contrast and subtle layering of ink, acrylic, graphite, colour pencil, charcoal, and Staedtler liner pens, and has

been exploring with mdf lamination lately too. “It's cool to take something like a circle, something without dimensions and add dimensionality into it. I was so inspired by Sandy Adsett MNZM when I was studying…his unusual use of colour, his use of simple shapes as the basis of his work.”

“I find other tattoo artists - particularly those from the Japanese tradition a source of endless inspiration. Kanō Hōgai, an 18th century Japanese painter, is one of my favourites. Haewall (Korea), Sir Derek Lardelli, ONZM are all artists who I have so much respect for…I really value authenticity of work, the uniqueness of style and originality. I'm very attracted to work which pushes into unknown spaces at a super high standard.”

Despite a heavy tattoo schedule, Davey passionately dedicates himself to his artistic practice; the manga tattoos he has become known for and his illustrative work. “Some days it's just not happening and if I push it, I end up hating what I’ve made. You’re your biggest critic, always… it's good to be able to shift away from works in progress and then come back to them later in a different headspace.”

“What does the future hold? Someday I want to have my own tattoo studio, work more with wood, become known for the standard of my work, do only Manga. But really, I’m already living my dream every day.”

See more of Ataera’s work at Made Gallery, or book at Raglan Tattoo.

XAVIER MEADE: AOTEAROA LIBERATORS EXHIBITION

Mexican-born, Xavier De La Cueva Meade,

a retired Wintec Mediarts lecturer, and longtime Raglan resident, will again be exhibiting his Aotearoa Liberators posters at the Raglan Museum.

I was interested to know what motivated Xavier to commission these beautiful posters.

Around 2005 he met Cuban Cuqui (Nilda Blanco) a fellow Latin American who was teaching at the Waikato University, and they became good friends.

She spoke of the printers at the ICAIC legendary print shop in Havana, Cuba, where she had worked in an administrative position while they were printing the seminal posters of the Cuban revolution, since 1959. At the time Xavier visited in 2006 they were short of work and the USA embargo often made it difficult to get the necessary materials to complete their print commissions.

In his younger days, one of Xavier’s first jobs in Mexico was with the Cineteca Nacional (the Mexican Film Commission), where he was designing and producing their magazine, CINE. He developed a real love for the posters designed for locallymade Cuban and International movies, and started a collection.

Cubans love cinema, local and world cinema including Hollywood and they developed a tradition of designing and printing the promotional posters of every movie shown in Cuba. They did not use the original designs that the rest of the world used and they did some classic reinterpretations.

The Cuban poster styles were heavily influenced by Russian posters designed to promote communism in the early 20th century and by Polish cultural designs (theatre, cinema, concerts, circus, etc).

Xavier comments that “posters are not highbrow; everyone and anyone can relate to them. They’re a good medium to use to disseminate information and send messages”.

An invitation to present papers at the Design Institute in Havana in 2006 allowed him to visit these renowned printers.

Following this, he invited “artist amigos” from Aotearoa to design a poster and write a text about a liberator/activist from these islands, whose work resonates personally with them.

That turned out to be the easier part of the process. Conditions at the print shop were basic and they had no computers, so much of the planning took place via dodgy telephone connections.

Having sent the artwork ahead, they then languished in the Cuban customs office for 2 months! Paper and ink shortages slowed progress further but by the time Xavier and partner, Carolyna arrived in Havana, all, apart from the “elephant poster” had been completed. Xavier was bemused, knowing that no elephant poster had been submitted.

It was Nicola Farquhar’s poster on conservationist, Richard Henry, depicting threatened birds! She had requested transparent inks be used but the printers had never heard of these! Then he and Carolyna helped number the 50 series of 12 posters, fueled by “Baby’s” strong, sweet Cuban coffee.

The posters had their first showing at ISDI’s Forma 2007 Open Day to coincide with the World Design Congress organized by the International Council of Graphic Design Associations. The Aotearoa Liberators exhibited alongside posters shown from over 30 countries. Then on to Merida and Oaxaca (“a very exciting city for graphics”) in Mexico. Finally, the exhibition was mounted at Wintec in Ramp Gallery in 2007 and then in Christchurch, Waikato Museum, Waikato University, Waiheke Red Shed, Parihaka International Peace Festival and the Te Ao Marama festival, Whaingaroa. The collection is now in many National and International institutions and has also been exhibited in the USA, Croatia, Spain, Scotland and Denmark.

The Aotearoa Liberators posters feature well-known artists honouring other artists, political activists, poets and conservationists. For example, artist,

educational innovator, and local identity, the late Katerina Mataira chose a friend from her teacher-training days, artist Ralph Hotere. In her accompanying story Katerina explains the thinking behind Ralph’s powerful work.

One of the posters that might be familiar to Raglan locals is the one which depicts Eva Rickard, designed by Raglanite, Jenny Rhodes.

Apart from their visual beauty, the accompanying texts in Spanish, Te Reo and English are informative and absorbing.

The exhibition will be mounted in the central gallery of the Raglan Museum, allowing visitors “to move seamlessly between them, as though they are reading a large book” (to quote Xavier).

Plans are afoot for Xavier to offer a couple of lectures over the next few months, for those interested in learning more about this fascinating art form.

The catalogue containing the full texts as well as an informative essay by Jon Bywater, will be for sale. Some sets of the 12 posters are also available.

LARA SWEETMAN INSPIRING WEARABLE ART FROM THE WINGS

Lara’s daughter Ayla Benseman won the children's supreme award when she was nine for her Jacqueline Frost costume, and a few years later she was runner-up for the open section supreme award with a dragon fly costume called Gossamer on Wind.

Son Luka was third at Raglan Art to Wear in 2010 for his Banjy on Fire entry inspired by the Avatar movie, and then highly commended in 2012 for his Celestial Tempest entry - a warrior-inspired creation with a unique New Zealand flavour.

And to top it all off, youngest children Ngakau and Georgie came second in the Dr Seuss children's section in 2010 as the cheeky Benseman Thing 3 & 4.

Lara says a big part of a costume’s winning formula is telling the story on stage on show night and she would dedicate a whole school day getting the students and costumes show-ready.

“We spent the day choreographing, playing with music, getting movement to the costume, working out how to do that wow factor on stage, and developing confidence before they go and have to do the rehearsal.”

Raglan Art to Wear is ready to wow audiences for its 20th year of bringing together art, design, fashion, and theatrical performance in a catwalk extravaganza at the Raglan Town Hall.

The Local Rag caught up with local creative Lara Sweetman to learn about her Art to Wear experiences.

From inspiring young designers and behind the scenes cheerleading, she offers her pearls of wisdom.

Don't miss this world-class theatrical extravaganza and witness the stage come alive with incredible works of wearable art on Saturday 27 May, 2pm and 7pm shows.

Ticket sales open in May at : creativeraglan.co.nz

Audience tickets $25.

Lara Sweetman is someone who has supported the wearable arts in Whaingaroa from the beginning; in fact she was doing art to wear around the various schools before it was even a thing in Raglan.

After being blown away by a World of Wearable Arts show she attended in Wellington over 25 years ago, she pitched the idea of a student wearable arts project to Raglan Area School.

Selected students involved in extension activities created the first Raglan wearable arts costumes and held a show of their creations in the school hall under Lara’s wing.

Moving to Te Mata School, Lara ran their accelerate programme introducing students to the wacky world of wearable art.

This time they took it a bit further, entering the Waihi Wearable Art show, which was the second largest show in Aotearoa at that time.

“We couldn't believe it, we scooped up all the major prizes in the children's section,” she says.

While taking some time out from teaching after the birth of her fourth child, Lara mentored a group of Te Uku students to enter their creations into the Raglan Art to Wear show, which had now come to town.

Back into teaching again, this time at Waitetuna School, she introduced the world of wearable arts to the whole school.

Supporting all the Waitetuna children, Lara was also overseeing her own four children’s wearable art creations, three of whom were at primary and one at day care.

“That was absolutely crazy. We just made a whole room in our house, which was just a creating room.”

It seems costume making runs in the family as Lara’s grandmother Jean Sweetman, a seamstress for local families, travelled the district on horseback and stayed with families for a week to make all their clothes.

“She was an artist and a designer, and she used to make everything without patterns. My grandmother taught me to sew and then I used to sew things without patterns as well. Interestingly my eldest daughter, while

Lara’s wearable art tips

away from home at university, taught herself to sew and started upcycling clothing from op shops and sewing new creations without patterns too,” Lara says.

The family costumes have always been a team effort and Lara’s partner Ken Benseman gets roped in to help as well.

“It's pretty much always been a collaboration. My partner is very good at the technical aspects.”

Daughter Georgia’s Deer to be Wild costume needed some support to hold a heavy set of antlers on a riding helmet and Ken attached a neck brace to take the weight of the antlers and that became part of the costume.

A sea change has seen Lara take on the role of Raglan Naturally community connector which means she no longer supports student’s wearable art efforts; although at a recent visit to Waitetuna School, Lara was treated to the students excitedly explaining their creations for the upcoming Art to Wear show.

“It is just so wonderful to see the excitement and passion to be creative and off the wall continue.”

Lara still continues supporting behind the Raglan Art to Wear scenes, helping to display a previous costume in town, and as part of the backstage crew.

• Give yourself at least eight weeks from when you start thinking about your design to finished costume

• Brainstorm, search the internet for images, sketch and build up a design board

• Think about what story you are trying to tell and how it can have a big impact on stage

• Start sourcing materials everywhere you go, like Kaahu’s Nest, op shops, your own house, your families’ and friends’ sheds

• Think about the functionality of the design and test the technical aspects work before adding the creative flourishes

• Practice moving in the costume and look at how it moves

• Collaborate with people who can support with technical skills

• Be flexible about your design and don’t be afraid to make changes

• Get feedback. Your costume will benefit from a fresh set of eyes, and add extra WOW factor

• Plan and practice makeup, hair and choreography

• Ask a confident friend to model your costume if you are not comfortable on stage

• Think about how to utilise the stage for audience impact

• Make sure the costume is robust and strong. Sometimes hot glue is not enough to hold it all together for the rehearsals and shows.

‘REAL PUSH’ URGED TO MAKE VITAL HAVENING STUDY A GOER

The app is key to the whole project, says Dr Youngson, tracking as it does real-life changes in individual clients who give daily feedback on their symptoms and level of wellbeing.

“We can also measure physiological changes in those who use wearable devices like Apple Watch or Fitbit, and administer standardised measures for … mental wellbeing,” he adds. “These changes in outcomes can be correlated with the timing of the havening therapy.”

In the four years since being certified as a havening techniques practitioner and trainer, Dr Youngson has gained quite a following in Raglan and beyond. If the PledgeMe project goes ahead, the data collected can be used to advocate for public funding for both training and practice.

Dr Youngson explains that the actual techniques of this alternative therapy are based on three simple forms of human touch which can radically change our brainwaves – that by gently rubbing the hands, shoulders and face the brain is literally rewired to create a strong signal of safety and to remove the effects of trauma.

ARaglan health professional is at the centre of an ambitious drive to fund a health outcome study that he says could revolutionise mental healthcare in New Zealand.

The anaesthetist turned havening expert, Dr Robin Youngson, launched a crowdfunding campaign –Transforming Mental Healthcare through People Power – a month ago.

But while the PledgeMe page has raised well over $10,000, he says it will be “a real push now” to meet the minimum target of $28,000 by the middle of next week.

“If it’s not fully funded we can’t go ahead,” he told the Chronicle on Monday.

Dr Youngson practises a cutting-edge form of trauma therapy called havening techniques from his clinic at

the top of Stewart St – treating Raglan residents for free – and believes a study will lead to mainstream health services’ buy-in, which in turn will benefit people in need of mental healthcare.

He heads a team of six mental health professionals and doctors who would help with the study design and oversee the project, using an innovative app to “directly measure the changes in the lives of the people we are trying to help”.

The purpose-built app would gather anonymous data from thousands of participants and, Dr Youngson believes, quickly accumulate evidence in support of havening – a process he describes as “more compassionate and healing” than mainstream medicine for disorders like anxiety and depression

“We believe that if havening is adopted widely, it could transform mental healthcare in New Zealand.”

It’s not woo-woo, he insists. There’s detailed neuroscience behind havening which explains how trauma is stored in the brain and how it can be reversed, right down to the molecular level.

“Our mental health services are in crisis and demand is escalating,” he adds. “We urgently need new therapies, and new ways of proving what works and what doesn’t.”

Dr Youngson has been an advisor to the NZ Government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) on healthcare quality and patient safety. He is also internationally renowned for his leadership in compassionate healthcare.

In 2016 the NZ Medical Association gave Dr Youngson the Chair’s Award for his “outstanding contribution to the health of New Zealand”.

Q & A WITH NIALL DARWIN FROM THE INFINITE MONKEY LAB

on the local grid meaning we are less likely to have power cuts. Basically it means we can use less fossil fuel and less materials in the grid, or not having to upgrade the grid while our housing capacity expands for example.

Q: What different approaches do you take in your work?

Niall: People think things are complicated and difficult, but my background is Engineering and designing things. Everything manufactured was designed by humans, so it’s understandable. Even if it was hundreds of humans, it is still understandable. Sometimes it feels impossible, but I take the view “a human did this” so we should be able to figure it out. But some days I still despair. I use the Reverse Engineering approach. I am still looking for methods of approaching regulations.

Another way of working is to NOT be afraid of blowing things up. One of my working challenges is self-imposed pressure of being afraid of getting things made by the time I said I would do it.

Q: How did you get here, to second life batteries? Is it possible to tell us about the journey, inspirations, master plan?

Q: Let's say you found a million dollars in your bank account next week; what would be the top three purchases you would make – FOR THE LAB – and why?

Niall:

1. Test Gear – high powered testing facilities.

2. Smart People – with a magic wand I would have a great organization.

3. I think back to the Labs I have worked in before and that's what I want to create –but the journey seems scary.

Q: Can you tell us about one or two disasters from the lab? People love to hear a failure story...

Niall: In the early days we managed to fry a computer – we let the smoke out and had some interesting smells and then fixed it.

My converted electric ride on mower, that was a good one; we blew up the motor controller so we decided to run it on an on/off switch. Well we vapourized the brambles and blew up the battery. We then decided the mower DID need a motor controller.

Q: Describe your vision... let’s hear about the bigger picture and the side projects...

Q: What is your philosophy at The Infinite Monkey Lab?

Niall: Trying to make the best use of embodied energy which is the work that has gone into making something that you don’t get back. An example is recycling a car body shell; you can get the steel but not a new car. Of course if you carry on using the car, you carry on using the embodied energy. High-tech has more embodied energy. A better example than a car is the battery from an electric car.

Q: Many of us know you as the electric bike guy. How did you get into electric bikes, and where is that journey taking you now?

Niall: I went to a sustainability ideal home show; at the event there was a company with electric bikes and I tried a bike and thought it was amazing and could change society for the better. My vision then was what is very slowly happening.

These electric bikes are a mode of transport as opposed to a ‘hobby’. Electric bikes are also a really good way to save a ton of cash; if the gearbox goes on a car, that costs you a grand or so to fix which is all an electric bike costs new!

The electric bikes got me playing with batteries, batteries got me to buy a crashed Tesla – I got a lot of battery for not a lot of money. I couldn’t believe it had been ‘written off,’ it was such a huge amount of waste. However, as I mentioned, fixing cars is a very expensive and difficult task. So I went looking for the next best use for the components that made up that vehicle.

At this stage, we have elevated our engineering and are now using the batteries from the EV-vehicles to develop grid connected storage – meaning we can run on solar at night time and wind power when it's calm. We can reduce the strain

Niall: My parents were always into Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth – it was ‘in the air’ growing up in my family that we will be able to run our society off solar power in the future. I wasn’t a greenie in my 20’s. But living in Raglan and making use of old stuff probably comes a lot from the ethos of Xtreme Zero Waste – a lot of the lore around here comes from the work there. As a species we are adolescents, we have become powerful but we aren't thinking about the long term, we are hopefully coming out of our adolescence and will mature quickly!

Q: Who will benefit from this work with Energy Storage Solutions at The Infinite Monkey Lab?

Niall: Everybody will benefit from this, everything we can do to slow climate change gives us a great future, not a survival future; a great future, not a tolerable future.

It’s all about the batteries at the moment, but we can use the inverters from the cars as well. It's a bigger challenge but it’s still possible.

Niall: Us all having ample sustainable energy. A better world where we don't have to listen to each other's mowers and generators. Incorporating solar to create dispatchable sustainable power.

For example, we can make many small changes; we could perhaps replace diesel generators on pumping stations around Raglan with these grid batteries that we have developed. The benefits for projects like this are that we make it less-likely that power cuts occur (due to less stress on the grid) and we remove the maintenance of these generators which currently contain oil and diesel (not the best products to have at our harbour).

Have you got any questions for us Niall?

Niall: I will want to hear from people running big operations who use a lot of power to see how our services can be beneficial. I will also be looking for funding. But first we need to get our first customer’s battery installed and commissioned. Watch this space!

If you'd like to get in touch with Niall you can email him at chiefchimp@timl.me

KING OF THE SINGLE FIN

The Local Rag caught up with Raglan Board riders to get coverage of the special day

Why was it a good fit to dedicate the event to the memory of Kyle?

Kyle Leuthart was a long standing member of the Point Boardriders Raglan, as well as the key sponsor of the King of the Single Fin event for a few years, including our last King of the Single Fin back in 2020. More importantly, he was a friend and loved member of our surfing, and wider Raglan community, and the opportunity to celebrate and remember him was a fitting one.

It was an action packed event. How did it go? What was the highlight?

We were greeted at Manu Bay with pumping and consistent 4-foot waves with light winds – the conditions we had been waiting for. The excitement levels were high along with the morale, and the 72 competitors were more than ready to jump in the water. Although the waves were pumping and everyone could not wait to surf their next heat, or munch down a steak and cheese for the pie eating contest, the paddle out for Kyle was definitely the highlight of the day, with all the competitors and spectators joining in to remember and celebrate our friend.

Who would you like to give thanks to?

The event would not be able to run without the input and work of our committee members and entrants, who all helped make it run smoothly, in particular Marcus Hodgkinson, Michelle Tarrant and Luke Hughes for their efforts in organising and managing the day. To our businesses who supported the event; Raglan Surf Co as presenting sponsor donating spot prizes, the BBQ and drinks, Malcolm Hutt at Coaster Coffee for making free coffee all day, Raglan Bakery for sponsoring the pie eating competition, as well as the many other local business for their contributions; Coaster Coffee, Everyone's Store, Volume1 Distribution, Workshop Brewery, Out of Ubud Bali Shop, B-Rex Photography, The Physio Room, Camenzind Surfboards and Hughes Surfboards, thank you all! We would also like to give thanks and love to Tara, Sunny, Cruz, Sage, Chris, Shannon and the Leuthart family for joining us on the day for the special moment we shared.

Results

It's cliché, but the truth is everyone won and went home happy, although the final placings were:

1st - Luke Dymond

2nd - Van Camenzind

3rd - Sid West

4th - Jahmin Thompson

5th - Luke Hughes

Our Raglan Food Co Feijoa & Pear is the first of a number of limited seasonal releases we'll be launching to market this year. We were inspired by a number of factors - seasonality, requests from customers and our love of locally sourced ingredients.

There's also something very nostalgic about this flavour and our team all have memories of feijoa laden trees from their childhood, feijoa crumbles or simply scooping juicy spoonfuls of this unique fruit. We describe this new yoghurt as subtly sweet but teeming with flavour. We've even managed to convince those who aren't fans of feijoas, so we think that speaks for itself on how delicious this one is! We've been enjoying the Feijoa & Pear with muesli but it's really delicious served as a dessert accompaniment too. And we really love our label too. Shall we drop by some samples for the team?

We'redelighted to be able to announce the winner of our very first Vibe Lifter AwardChelita Kahutianui o-te-Rangi Zainey (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Haua, Waitaha). It was no small feat with so many lovely nominations; but Chelita was a standout and very well deserving. The RFC team are ecstatic to be able to help her continue her amazing mahi.

Chelita has spent the last decade helping people improve their wellbeing through breathwork, traditional rongoā (healing), and mirimiri (massage). She plans to use the $2,500 grant for providing breathwork workshops in schools. "To be able to share the secrets of breath with our rangatahi so they have this tool with them for life, a tool that helps them to navigate stress and anxiety, it’s such a powerful way to give back to them,” says Chelita.

Particularly impressive are its social initiatives, which include a staff profit share programme, staff health and wellbeing fund, and a local community fund. Raglan Food Co has an ongoing focus on innovation, which includes products as well as other initiatives, such as wastewater treatment. Q&A WITH EMMA FROM THE HUT

TheLocal Rag caught up with Emma from The Hut at Rangitahi to hear about the coffee and food spot over on the peninsula.

What is new to report from The Hut at Rangitahi?

Last year our building moved across the road and is now on a new site where eventually a much larger cafe will be built. We didn't move far but it has a nicer feel. Lots of sunshine, great views of the inner harbour, native bush and the majestic Karioi. We’ve also started sharing the site with food trucks in the evenings and weekends. We want to make this a regular thing and hopefully next summer we can get a market happening too.

What is appealing about taking the time to visit your location?

We have a beautiful outlook in our new spot. Plenty of parking and room for kids to run around that is safe and away from the roads. It's so nice to escape over here when the town is feeling busy. The perfect peaceful spot for a coffee catch-up and lunch with friends. We are the 'new' part of Raglan but want the whole community to feel like they can come and hang out here. There are walking tracks that weave around the peninsula. Plus we have the best coffee roasted locally by Malcolm Hutt at Coaster Coffee, and bake lots of yummy food daily!

What kai do you have on offer?

We are becoming well known for our sausage rolls which we make in-house and our epic toasted sandwiches! If you like blue cheese, you have to try our Scotch Fillet Steak and Blue Cheese sandwich which is toasted on Turkish Pide - it's a banger!

What do you like about running your business?

New Zealand hospitality is up there with some of the best and I love showcasing that through my business. I spent years

travelling, working in hospitality and meeting people from all over the world. I love coming home and sharing my experiences with the community. I want people to feel like they can come to The Hut and know they will get an outstanding coffee, food and service and it will be the same every time.

What are your opening hours?

Our opening hours are currently: Tues - Fri | 7.30 am - 1.30 pm Sat | 8.00 am - 12.00 pm

HEALTH & WELLBEING FEATURE

Nikki is an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist who loves being outdoors. She is married and is a Mum of four girls. Her vision is to empower and support youth who struggle with mainstream school and who have difficulties managing social and emotional expectations.

Nikki has been an Occupational Therapist for over 20 years and has recently completed a Youth work certification with a nature and adventure focus. Her special interest includes brain development and the concept of neuroplasticity: the ability of the brain to make changes throughout an individual’s lifetime.

Tamariki and rangatahi may be struggling to sit still at school, finding it hard to read and write, or seem to be in constant trouble. Friendships may be a challenge for the child or changes at home may make it difficult for the child to focus or remain calm. Raglan Nature Therapy can help young people make some fundamental shifts that will have positive impacts on their engagement in society.

Nikki recognised early on in her career that unintegrated reflexes were the missing link as to why some children do not respond to other more traditional approaches used to support

positive behavior. We are all born with primitive reflexes that are meant to integrate as a child develops. Sometimes this does not occur and can act as a barrier to learning and show up as sensory, emotional, social, and physical difficulties. Reflex integration aims to strengthen the connections within the brain from the bottom up which will then influence a child’s ability to focus, regulate and engage. Nikki now integrates all this learning into individual, family, and group sessions.

Raglan Nature Therapy works alongside local outdoor education specialists to support youth to determine their future through a range of nature, and adventure-based activities. These practical skills support lasting change, providing opportunities to engage in ‘safe’ risky behavior.

Creative opportunities can add to the nature and adventure programmes allowing

FUSION BODY THERAPIES

CREATING CHANGE IN THE BODY

Creating space in the body through different techniques of body therapy such as Mohala Floor Bodywork, Kahuna Massage, Constructive Rest and Hatha Yoga are all modalities that will keep the body open and flexible which helps keep our vital energy flowing.

Over the last 20 plus years Jo has studied a variety of techniques that have evolved to create a personal body treatment system for her clients that can help people of most ages and allow them to feel the change within themselves.

“The treatments are designed to address the whole body not just the parts. You may be experiencing something that is creating tension or discomfort, when we allow space for that residual tension to be released and softened out of the body, the body functions better” Jo said.

“Treatments depend on the individual and their comfort levels. Its not about fixing something, its about making time and space for the body to adjust to its natural self, unhindered by held or recurring patterns of tension”.

THE SPACE RAGLAN HINA MASSAGE

YOGA & PILATES CLASSES IN RAGLAN & ON ZOOM

The Space opened its doors in 2015. It’s been over seven years of organic growth, responding to the needs of our community. Through this time, we’ve worked hard to keep yoga accessible, community-spirited and help people feel good. We are so grateful for the wellness-loving community at The Space.

Boost your wellness this winter. Yoga is an excellent way to keep you moving in the colder, darker months, and regular practice can help strengthen immunity and resilience. The community created in group classes keeps you motivated and accountable.

Whether you’re a fan of yoga already or curious to try, we offer all levels of classes from Gentle to Power. Yoga and pilates are noncompetitive and for every “body” to explore movement, mindfulness and breath. Don’t worry, there is no right or wrong. The guiding intention is to develop deeper connection to yourself.

“Yoga is not about touching your toes... it’s about what you learn on the way down.”

Tālofa lava, I’m Sammy Cowley, I have a Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage from Wintec.

We’re blessed in Whāingaroa with some amazing therapists within all the healing modalities. You can’t go wrong.

Massage is ancient and there’s some form of it in every culture. In Hawaii, children would walk on the backs of the warriors returning from war, my nana would receive massage from any willing participant in her lounge, I would massage my mum’s shoulders as a young girl, it’s a beautiful way to nurture.

Some people are drawn to it and I guess I’m one of those. There’s a rhythm and a flow to it that can be meditative for both parties. At the very least you will relax, dopamine levels will increase, your muscle fibres will be smoothed out and stretched, and fight or flight mode will inevitably leave the building.

WHAT'S ON THIS MONTH AT THE OLD SCHOOL ARTS CENTRE

LIVE & LOCAL

As it’s NZ Music Month there will be some great Kiwi covers in people’s sets this month, as well as loads of original songs. Featured acts for Fri May 12 are: Pete Aim, WilkieMac, Holly Dove, and The Ragtimers.

It’s Pete’s first Live & Local appearance. He’ll be accompanied by Brian Wilson for some “humming and strumming”.

Local music stalwarts WilkieMac (Lynne Wilkins and Michael Mackinnon) will mix it up with some old and new favourite Kiwi songs as well as an original or two.

Holly Dove brings songs collected from her travels along with her own music. Holly has toured the folk circuit in the UK, playing festivals, pubs and house concerts and appeared previously at Live & Local with her duo Dolly & The Hooves.

Having won 2nd place at the Ukulele Blast in late 2022 (and trophy for Best Performance), the Ragtimers are heading to a Ukulele Festival in Mangawhai later this month, and this Live and Local performance is a perfect dress rehearsal for their festival set.

Live & Local is supported by Waikato District Creative Communities, Raglan Light & Sound and Mark Frost – Bayleys Real Estate.

WE WAYWARD DIVAS

“We take our music very seriously, but we love to have fun too”

Gilly Darbey and Vikki Clayton are famed for their beautiful voices, write much of their own material, and between them play several instruments. Singing songs of love and life these girls have impeccable pedigrees when it comes to musical careers. Between them (and sometimes together) they've worked with Van Morrison, Richard Thompson, John Martyn, Fairport Convention, Joan Armatrading, Ralph McTell (blah blah - the list is endless) and they are too modest (old) to remember them all.

They've toured the world, played major festivals and events, and armed with nothing but their voices, charm and prosecco they thrill audiences everywhere.

This is their second Raglan concert and this time they will also be teaching a vocal workshop.

Concert: Fri May 19, 7.30pm, doors open 7pm. Door sales only $20/$15 concession

Vocal workshop: Sat May 20, 2pm, $15/$12 concession – to book email: gillysing@xtra.co.nz

HOW IS RELATIONSHIP PROPERTY DIVIDED IN A SEPARATION?

The Act also includes provisions for the division of separate property, which is property that was owned by one partner before the relationship began, as well as gifts and inheritances received during the relationship.

The Act provides the framework for the division of relationship property and sets out a two-stage process for the division of property:

1. Identifying relationship property

The first stage is to identify all relationship property, which includes all property acquired by the couple during the relationship. This may require a detailed analysis of each partner's financial affairs, including bank accounts, investments, and other assets. The court may also consider any evidence of contributions made by each partner to the relationship, such as financial contributions, domestic work, or caregiving.

2. Division of relationship property

The second stage is to divide the relationship property in a way that is fair and reasonable, taking into account a range of factors, including;

• The length of the relationship

• The contributions made by each partner to the relationship, including financial and non-financial contributions

• The future earning capacity of each partner

• The needs of any children of the relationship

• Any other relevant factors, such as the health and age of each partner.

The division of relationship property is governed by the Property (Relationships) Act 1976 (the Act). This legislation applies to couples who are married, in a civil union, or in a de facto relationship.

The division of property between partners is one of the most complex aspects of a relationship breakdown. This process is known as relationship property, which refers to all property that is acquired during a relationship, regardless of who owns it. This includes assets such as the family home, vehicles, investments, and personal possessions, but also includes debts such as mortgages, credit card debt, and loans.

The court may also consider the concept of "economic disparity," which refers to situations where one partner has suffered a significant economic disadvantage as a result of the relationship, such as a partner who has given up their career to care for children or supporting their partner's career.

In conclusion, while the Act provides a legal framework for the division of relationship property it is important to seek legal advice if you are going through a relationship breakdown to ensure that your interests are protected and your legal rights are upheld. Make your move

With the owners moving overseas, this section presents an opportunity to secure a great section at an affordable price for you to then build your dream home upon. The section doesn't require much excavation or retaining in comparison to some, is high on a hill, yet is somewhat sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds. There are some rural views and with many of the surrounding sections now complete with new homes it is easier to see how your new home might fit this situation. The section size is 415m2. There has been a geotechnical report done on the site.

Very affordable NE facing section

Looking for the perfect spot to build your dream home or beach getaway? Look no further than 6 Kapokapowai Street, located in Stage 3 'The Plateau'. This prime, elevated section offers incredible value in that the section is only gently sloping so will require minimal excavation AND it has a 'meet the market' asking price of just $399,000. Act quickly on this one.
