Raglan baker Lucy Donaldson has struck triple gold with her gluten free breads which, in little more than two years, have become so popular they’re now ordered right across the country.

Three of Lucy’s loaves – marketed simply as the white one, the seedy one and the fruity one – all won gold medals in New Zealand’s prestigious Outstanding Food Producer Awards announced last week, with her sourdough claiming a silver.

‘Lucy’s’ branded breads also won big-time last year, with two golds and one silver.

Safe to say then that this locally born and bred 34 year old has largely captured the gluten intolerance market – along with that for those with allergies – with a product of a consistently high quality.

So what does winning twice over in as many years mean to Lucy? Apart from the kudos, it brings both “credibility and customers” to her fledgling business, she says.

With the help of three staff Lucy’s now turning out between 1200 and 1500 loaves a week from her recently built Frankton bakery.

In the lead-up to Easter Lucy’s been particularly busy in the bakery – starting work at 4am rather than the usual 7am – because she’s also produced 180 six-packs of gluten free hot cross buns daily, her recipe voted by Auckland-based lifestyle magazine Denizen as New Zealand’s best.

It all started in the kitchen of her Whale Bay home when as a young mum she decided to go gluten free while breast-feeding colicky babies, in the hope of getting some relief.

Already making her own sourdough and substituting with Volare’s sourdough, Lucy approached the Waikatobased Volare’s team and asked why not make a gluten free product. They simply didn’t have time, but offered Lucy – who’d become quite the home baker – the chance to come up with a gluten free loaf of her own.

The enterprising mother-of-three jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with a brand like Volare.

She insists it was a lucky case of the “right time, right place”, but there were still two years of trials amid a few lockdowns and the building of a purpose-built bakery courtesy of Volare before Lucy’s gluten free breads could be launched.

Now they’re in every Volare store, many health food shops, farmers markets and are delivered direct to customers nationwide.

Hubby Elliot however reckoned she was “making bricks” at first – so Lucy set out to prove him wrong.

She experimented with a lot of alternative flours to wheat and studied the properties of different wholegrains, ensuring her choice of substitutes would provide nutrients for a healthy diet.

Lucy’s especially proud of her white sandwich loaf that stays soft enough to wrap around a sausage for instance – no mean feat in the gluten free market.

Life has become quite a juggle since abandoning her career as an operating theatre nurse but Lucy’s passionate about the product and her change of direction.

She gets up in the wee hours and goes for a run before work – a habit she labels her “coping mechanism” – leaving Elliot to drop their two boys off at Te Uku School and their daughter at Matapihi Kindergarten. Finished work by two in the afternoon, Lucy is back in time to pick the children up.

All her loaves are made by hand so each is unique, she says. And they’re made with fewer ingredients – no eggs, nuts, dairy products or preservatives – so are best eaten fresh, she adds, as there’s not the long shelf life of “normal” breads.

Her breads can be ordered online for home delivery all over New Zealand, Lucy explains, the day’s bake being sent via a perishable post overnight courier. There are now also 40 stockists throughout the North Island.

A new range of dried goods will be released later this year, reveals Lucy’s marketing manager Ezra Andre – an old friend from way back at Raglan Area School – but that’s another story.

WAVY-ING GOODBYE

Heplayed at Homegrown last week and has two more gigs – at San Fran in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington on April 13 and Galatos in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland on April 19 – and after that, Muroki is off.

To Berlin, no less.

“It's going to be fun, man. Like, yeah it's going to be awesome making the move over there next month. It’s just going to be a little bit sad playing these last shows, but I think it's going to be fun as well,” the multi-talented musician says.

Muroki’s based in Tāmaki now, where he’s just released his third EP, Timezones.

The seven-track mini-album was a long time in the making but he’s “pretty stoked to have it out there, super happy”.

“It's a little bit more experimental, particularly with my vocals, the vocal production, I mean the way I've been using my voice. I'm just trying to push it in a different direction. There's still the mellow stuff in there as well and I feel like overall it's a bit of a slower tempo, but it's a bit more in the groove. It's like a development in a way

from what I've been doing in the past, especially in the kind of funk realm.”

The past for Muroki started right here in Whaingaroa Raglan with bands Cloak Bay and Masaya before heading out on his own and achieving platinum success with the single Wavy in 2021 and the te reo version Rehurehu on Waiata Anthems the same year.

He says it’s too hard to pick a single out of the seven tracks on Timezones.

“They could all be singles, you know. Everybody's got their favourite and I feel like there's something on there for everybody. They all work in different ways. It depends on the audience listening to it as well, but I do find that part a bit tricky.”

With only a couple of gigs left before he heads off for the foreseeable future, his last gig at the Yottie may well have been his last in Raglan for some time; not that many venues could accommodate his fans.

“Yeah, last time I played at the Yottie it was just chocker. Next time we play we might need a bigger venue.”

But that’s not something he’ll have to worry about in Berlin, where he doesn’t have a whole lot of plans in place.

“There's nothing set in stone at this point. I'm just going to get myself over there and, you know, try it out for a couple of years.”

However, with three EPs under his belt, surely it’s time for an album?

“I reckon that might be my next venture. I think it's time to dabble into the album world. It’s a lot of work. This EP was pretty cruisy. I went over to America and took three songs and then I wrote four tracks from scratch over there but the whole thing was finished off in 11 days. We kind of went over to America, spent two weeks, hours in the studio every day and then maybe a couple of sessions afterwards but it wasn't like a crazy two weeks. But you know, that's only seven songs, I don’t know what it’d be like with 13 or so.”

All that’s for the future anyway, as his big adventure awaits. And he expects to catch up with plenty of Raglan friends and whānau in Berlin.

“There'll be a lot of Kiwis over there because people from here go to Europe so often, so I feel like I'm going to be the base for people coming to stay. I hope they all start coming over, that’d be cool, I don’t have any mates over there.”

BROUGHT TO YOU

FMUCH-LOVED BOUTIQUE, FLAXEN, MAKES RETURN TO RAGLAN

THE LOCAL RAG BRINGS YOU A SPACE TO INTRODUCE NEW BUSINESS START UPS IN WHĀINGAROA. WE TALK TO LOCALS ABOUT LAUNCHING THEIR BUSINESSES, THEIR IDEAS, ACHIEVEMENTS AND CHALLENGES.

laxen, a much loved local boutique clothing brand, has returned. Jacqui from the Local Rag chats to owners Penny and Mistral about the new Flaxen and their exciting plans for the business moving forward.

Why did you decide to bring Flaxen back to life?

It just felt like it was the right timing for us both. We had kept all our patterns and stuff together knowing there would be a time where we both had the space to start creating again.

What is the story behind the original Flaxen?

We modelled together overseas in the 80's and formed a great friendship. Around 2006 we decided to collaborate our skills in fashion and created the Flaxen label.

We first had a studio shop in Muriwai then Raglan and did many clothing parties throughout the North Island which was fun.

How would you describe Flaxen clothing?

Flaxen is minimalist style with a casual look and feel. We also use remarkable and interesting prints creating refreshing looks. We prioritise natural fabrics for our garments and have versatile designs that can be worn in different ways. As a coastal New Zealand label, it reflects our lifestyles for indoor and outdoor wear.

What did you learn that you will carry through to new Flaxen designs?

We have learnt that clothing you can move freely in, feel comfortable in and look beautiful often have an adjustable element.

Tell us about the process involved this time to put garments on the racks?

We look at the seasons and fashion influences going forward and adjust our styles to suit, and we make up our own rules as well haha.

The process is the same, we discuss and develop our designs, select and find our fabrics then cut them, and our sewists then sew them up ready for the racks.

This time around with more experience behind us and a good skilled team of pattern makers and sewists we are enjoying the work.

Penny and Mistral.

How will you sell and market the ranges?

We will continue with our clothing parties and sell wholesale to some selected stores. We are getting organised to sell online as well. We may do some popup shops occasionally but not a permanent shop.

How do people find out more?

Our fb page is Flaxen clothing Made in NZ; if you want more information about our clothing parties it’s on our fb page.

In Season - Feijoas

This month local writer Kate Evans, author of FEIJOA: A Story of Obsession & Belonging shares some feijoa tips and facts.

QUICK IDEAS

Make a Colombian feijoa con leche - basically a feijoa milkshake - by whizzing feijoas in a blender with milk and a little sugar. You can optionally leave the skin on, like the Colombians do, for extra tang and greenness.

Speaking of skins, after you’ve scooped out a bucketload of feijoa deliciousness, don’t chuck the skins in the compost straight away. Dissolve 3 tbsp sugar in a little water in a large jar. Add the skins and top up with water, using a smaller jar or rock to push the skins under the water - if they’re sticking out they’ll go mouldy. Leave on the bench for three days, then sieve out the skins, keeping the juice left behind. It’ll become a kombucha-like slightly fermented drink called Feijoa Fizz. Try making Peter Gordon’s delicious manuka and roasted feijoa chutney www.nzherald.co.nz/ eatwell/recipes/roast-feijoa-and-manuka-chutney

FEIJOA FACTS

• The feijoa evolved 23 million years ago among monkeys, giant ground sloths, and ‘terror birds’ in South America—but it is distantly related to the pōhutukawa and the eucalyptus.

• Feijoas aren’t a “super fruit” — they’re healthy and delicious, but don’t contain outrageous amounts of vitamins or iodine. They may, however, help reduce inflammation, and one study is currently investigating whether they can tame blood glucose levels in diabetics—something traditional Afro-Brazilian communities in the feijoa’s heartland already know.

• The oldest feijoa tree I found was located not in New Zealand or its South American homeland, but in the Hanbury Gardens in Italy: it is at least 110 years old.

RAGLAN FOOD JOURNEYS WITH SHANNON DARBYSHIRE FOOD FEATURE WITH SHANNON DARBYSHIRE

Colin’s personal food journey started with his two grandmothers in Hawaii, “My Popo (Chinese grandmother) was the start of everything. She grew everything in our backyard and as a little kid, we’d go to Chinatown and I’d help her shop. This Chinese influence—a Cantonese style of cooking—was learnt through helping my family cook and cooking together. My Maui Tutu (Hawaiian grandmother) was on a 20 acre farm. I learnt about farming, growing fruit, and gardening there. She taught me how to forage in the forest and the ocean. Every weekend we would go to the coast and catch and eat raw fish or to the mountains to forage wild food. Both of these great ladies not only left an indelible impression on my food psyche, but also lived healthy, long, and fruitful lives: Popo lived to 95 and Tutu to 107. This early influence has inspired my cooking all of my life and led me into the food industry.”

Vinnies was the first contemporary restaurant of its kind in late 80s Raglan and ran under Colin’s management until 2005. When Colin was asked about Vinnies provenance and ethos, he explained, “It was famous for its huge menu, Mexican food, and the most popular offering of buffalo chips and aioli. The menu changed based on what was available. It was local, seasonal, and ingredients were sourced within Raglan and the great Waikato food basket. Many young people were employed who went on to work in the industry and take on their own restaurants”.

The idea of using what’s available in the immediate environment led to passion projects in the Pacific and closer to home. The creation of his cookbook Kana Vinaka (literally ‘good food’ or ‘eat well’) celebrates a contemporary take on Fijian and Pacific cuisine. Colin says, “The aim of my work in the Pacific and the creation of this book is to teach people how to use their local produce to create modern dishes, minimise the need for shipped goods to the islands, and to truly eat local. This in turn supports small communities, creates jobs, and promotes food security”. At home, Colin has developed courses that he shares at Raglan Community House. These evening classes, which run in the winter, teach people the basics of cooking, how to shop and stretch your budget whilst still eating nutritious food, and culminate in eating what you have prepared. This community work extends to running courses at Fraser High’s He Puaawai Teen Parent Unit. These courses focus on learning to feed yourself and your baby well, cooking basics, and how to navigate shopping for food. When asked what makes Raglan a special place to live, Colin states, “The environment, it’s special. The harbour, the ocean, and the forest, where you can forage. And, of course, the people and the attitude of the people”.

Over the years, Colin has worked with people from all walks of life. When asked what simple advice he would pass on to families, he says, “Schedule your week of meals in a general way so you can avoid impulse buying. Think about how many meals you will need for you or your family. Go out there and see what’s available, what’s on sale, what’s in season, what is a damn good buy. Buy that!”

COLIN’S RICH & MOIST BANANA CAKE

You won’t find a better recipe for this all time favourite. Colin has been growing bananas for over 20 years. “Bananas are abundantly available, cheap, and freeze easily; they are so often wasted because they are too ripe. With our warming climate, I see local bananas becoming more commercially available in New Zealand within the next few years”. This makes 12 slices.

Ingredients

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

4 large eggs

1 cup sour cream

3 cups plain flour

2 tsp baking powder

2 tsp baking soda

2 tbsp vanilla essence

1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

1 cup coconut (optional)

2 cups mashed banana

1. Preheat Oven to 180°c.

2. Cream the butter and sugar until pale, this will take around 10 minutes.

3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating them in.

4. Beat in the sour cream.

5. Sift the flour, baking powder, and baking soda and beat into the mixture.

6. Add the vanilla essence, nuts, and coconut if using, then fold in the bananas.

7. Pour into a lined cake tin and spread to make an even surface.

8. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is firm and a skewer comes out clean. Don’t overcook. Let the cake rest for 10 minutes then remove from the tin to cool on a rack.

Extra tip: Use the leftover banana skins by soaking them in water for a week. Pour on to your plants/gardens for a potassium boost.

TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

WITH RUBY GIBBS - CREATOR OF THE MENTAL HEALTH TOOLBOX

Toxward-Nicolson grew up in Whāingaroa and has just recently started her studies at the University of Waikato. We sat down to talk about mental health, self-love and her journey with ADHD.

What is your relationship like with your mental health and is it something that you think about every day?

My relationship with my mental health has gotten really strong, especially in the last two or three years. Probably since I started going to therapy in the beginning of 2021 just before I started uni for the first time. My anxiety was really bad and I didn’t know why. I was too scared to leave my bedroom, let alone my house. I started therapy and since then my relationship with my mental health is incredible. I'm finally at a point where I can just feel my feelings. For a really long time my feelings felt too big and too painful and too scary. I couldn't feel them. I wasn’t ready. I‘m always remaining aware of my mental health. I avoid things that make me feel bad and go toward things that make me feel good. Sometimes it is that simple.

What was your relationship like with your mental health when you were younger?

Definitely not good! It always felt like something was wrong. There were constant underlying issues; not being good enough, a need to be validated by others for my happiness. That's been a major shift between now and then. My mental health really relied on other people whereas today I'm the sole person who looks after it. One of the things that helped change my mindset was every time I got into those moments of over-thinking bad things about myself, I would just physically be like “No. Stop.” Then I would affirm myself with “I am beautiful. I am intelligent, kind, funny and worthy of love.” Always talking to yourself negatively will affect your mental health but you can slowly switch into talking to yourself positively.

When you have been at your lowest point, what has gotten you through?

Definitely my family. I would say that Terri has been quite a solid rock for me over the years. Growing up with an older sibling is just the best thing. They're your built-in friends. Having an older sister that always grounded me and affirmed me and who was just a few years ahead of me made me feel like I could do it too. I watched her go through turmoil then I experienced the turmoil myself. Heartbreaks were major triggers for me. It definitely brought me down to a dark place but it was always just like “I know that I can get through this. I know the path that I want to end up on.” I used to have some destructive coping mechanisms which were not great. I didn't have the tools that I have now and that’s okay! I just wanted to numb the feelings any way possible but then you learn to let yourself feel them and you don't need to numb anymore. Crying helps a lot, and hugs!

You’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD. What has that experience been like for you?

That was a few months after I started getting therapy. I had just started uni and was confused about why I couldn't just do the things that I wanted to do. I like being a good student, why can't I start my assignment now instead of leaving it to the last minute? I was really frustrated with myself. My therapist picked up on it and asked if I had heard of ADHD? I was like “Nah I don't have that!” I’m not hyper-energetic. I can focus. But the more he talked through what ADHD actually is, the more I was like, okay the dots are starting to connect. I’ve been diagnosed with ADD as well which presents differently. It's much more

internal than external. And I think that for most women, ADHD or ADD, is mostly internal. It’s not being able to gain control of all the thoughts in my head. I'm not expressing it physically. Women mask and contain their symptoms. Just because I can still function, doesn’t mean that I’m not struggling internally. It is constant and I thought that was very normal. You become paralysed.

Since you've had your diagnosis and you've started on medication, how has it changed your life?

I can do things for myself now! It is incredible. I have so much more patience for myself. I have so much more patience for my younger selves who were dealing with this and had no idea, who were blaming themselves for how hard things were. It was like wow, this whole time I thought there had to be something wrong and there was! Not that there's anything wrong with it but I suddenly had a reason behind all of my struggles. Discovering that and then having medication for the days where I can't quite focus or stay stimulated has made my life so much easier. I only take it when I need it which is not very often. I still prefer who I am without medication. I'm way more relaxed now. I’ve started back at uni again and not only am I more passionate about the degree that I’m pursuing but I also understand the way that I learn and I know how to manage that. It feels so freeing. It almost feels like I'm my 5 year old self again. I'm pursuing her dreams. This is a life I always dreamed of but I don't think I would have gotten

here without going through all that turmoil. I'm secure and strong in myself and understand myself so well that now I can give it my all.

What are some of the lessons that you’ve learned?

Mistakes are there to learn from! My biggest takeaway would be that when I make a mistake, I feel it completely. If you're able to sit with yourself and be like ok this is what we did, this is the consequence of our actions and this is what we are gonna do differently next time. And if you really process that then you'll make a hell of a lot less mistakes and actually learn the lessons! Also trust your gut. I think if you continue to self doubt and go against what you initially wanted, you're sort of abandoning yourself in a way. Trust your instinct because you'll never regret it.

What are some of the tools in your toolbox?

When you get really anxious or sad or upset, you feel your feelings in the front of your chest and your tummy. So if you grab a pillow or hug someone, you are really feeling those feelings and creating a safe space. It instantly soothes you. Hugs are really great, but if you don't have someone to hug, you can hug yourself. I think routines are really important, too. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle does actually greatly impact your mental health. Create a bit of a routine, stick to it and be there for yourself. And just go do things that make yourself feel good! And if you don't know what makes you feel good, go and look for it. There are so many things to do!

For this edition of the Whāingaroa Youthworker Collective - Te Whakaruruhau Mahuri Rangatahi Page, Matua Joe chats to Harry Carter.

So tell me about growing up in Whaingaroa.

Growing up in NZ was pretty cool living by the water surfing, sailing, swimming, all of it. I made the most of the ocean. I started off at RAS and then I wanted to meet new people so I decided to go to HBHS. I feel like I have learnt that there are so many people in the world but in a small community you don't have chances to meet people from different countries, and there are people boarding there also.

Tell me about sailing.

I have been sailing my whole life since I was born. I grew up sailing at Raglan Sailing Club, and the last few years I have started teaching sailing which has been pretty cool. I mainly teach young people around 7-13 years old. Teaching is so different from being a student. Obviously you feel way more responsible and I feel very meaningful to my students.

I was taught by Kirsten to race sailboats and she got me into coaching. So I completed a coaching course in Year 10 and decided to keep pushing myself to keep coaching. She left Raglan so I took over and I volunteer as a coach. I also get paid in Hamilton.

What makes you want to volunteer? I really value that you volunteer!

I enjoy passing on the knowledge, getting more people into sailing. It’s a great skill to have and an awesome environment around you and great people. It’s great for your well-being; as soon as I go out on the water I feel relaxed, my muscles relax, my heart beats, I smile, I have fun! It’s a completely different feeling to anything else. It’s hard to explain. I forget about school and homework and I live in the moment.

What advice would you give to young people growing up today?

Join as many activities outside of school as possible and keep pushing yourself in those activities. If you push through doing these activities it makes you a much better person. You feel like you have more of a purpose in life. Keep pushing through - life gets easier.

What advice would you give to adults to help young people?

Be a mentor - the people who mentored me pushed me, like my parents and Kirsten. In sailing for example you can push a kid further than you would expect to get over the obstacles. There are many obstacles in sailing and once you get through, the next obstacle can be easier. This is true for life also.

What's it like being a teacher?

I feel like young people respond really well to another young person teaching them. I think that if young people

can coach and help other young people it's a really great idea.

The Raglan Sailing Club has a website to join up to learn to sail. We meet every second weekend in Term 4 and Term 1.

CHATS WITH LOCAL THERAPISTS: BETH IVY BUXTON FROM MIND BODY BLOOM & ZISKI POSCHL

Our small community in this stunning location can be a ‘high-vibe’ and an ‘enriching’ environment. As we all know, life can swing the occasional hard-ball, and many of us are acutely aware of family members, friends, and young people in our community who experience a rougher-ride than others.

I am aware you are both therapists working in our community with young people and their families. I would love to know the secret to your sticking power, in what we all respect is a very tough job.

Q: What is your secret to success?

Beth: I genuinely love my work; it’s both an honour and humbling to support others. I’ve learned that filling my own cup so it can overflow to support others is crucial. I’m continually noticing my body, taking moments to self-regulate, and remembering to find the joy in life’s little moments like kitchen dance parties, being in nature, singing in the car and connecting with friends.

Ziski: The main thing that helps me stay passionate about my work and well myself is connection. This includes really focussing on the connection and relationship with the person or family I am working with, in the moment, and not letting the ever-present admin list get in the way of really being there with them. I also really value the connections with friends, family, and the beautiful nature around Whāingaroa. Exploring the environment with my toddler, and seeing the world from his perspective helps me stay playful and let go of stress.

Q: You work independently but share a working space, who is the messy one?

Beth: Haha me! Ziski is very patient with the shared cupboard… no seriously, Ziski is so warm and respectful, and we both want the room to feel really welcoming to others.

Ziski: Beth is amazing to share a space with! She has made it so welcoming and beautiful that it feels sunny,

even on stormy days. It is a lovely room that children and adults alike can feel comfortable in.

Q: What are your go-to tools for working with clients?

Ziski: I like working with clients to see what fits their way of seeing the world, and their values. Underpinning my work is a strong person-centered focus, so I prioritise the relationship, and then within that the client and I look at the menu of therapeutic techniques I offer to see what fits them best. For the last couple of years I have been training in Child-Centered Play Therapy, so I am integrating this approach with my younger clients. This approach is fast becoming my passion and I love how children use the therapeutic relationship to process experiences and try out new ways of being.

Beth: We always start with what the client is looking for and why they’ve reached out now. Over the last couple of years my work has focused more on managing anxiety and overcoming trauma. I work a lot with tamariki and whānau but also teens, university students and older adults. I’ve also been supporting organisations and schools with training so they can be more traumainformed. Often my work will combine traditional talk therapy techniques with practices that help us get back in our body and release emotions – this might be yoga, movement, mindfulness, or creative practices.

Q: Teach us! What can we all do to meet the needs of the modern / future child?

Beth: Connection connection connection! We all need to know we belong, so finding ways to connect even if a child’s behaviour is challenging really helps them feel safe and secure. Playfulness and connection are almost impossible when we are triggered ourselves (which all of us are at times), so learning how to manage our own emotions is also one of the biggest things we can do for our children.

Ziski: Focus on the relationship with the child, whether they are part of your family, a child in your neighbourhood,

or someone you are interacting with on a one-off basis. Really seeing a child and connecting with them in an empathetic and non-judgemental way can make such a difference.

Q: What are the biggest challenges for you as a therapist? What are your strategies for maintaining wellbeing?

Beth: It can be hard to support as many families as I’d like. So I'm offering more things like psycho-education workshops and parent support, to empower parents and educators with the information and tools they need to support tamariki and rangatahi.

Ziski: I also think seeing the significant systemic and historical trauma and stressors that families are dealing with can be really heart-wrenching. Over time, I have found that counselling can in itself be a strategy for wellbeing.

Q: What does our community need? How can we help you?

Ziski: There are some far-reaching issues like housing and food insecurity in our community. Being able to run free workshops or psycho-education sessions to support parents, as well as offer free or low-cost counselling sessions for children in need would mean that families are able to get support when they need it.

Beth: It’s important to be flexible and question what the best support might look like for different people. One of the biggest challenges we face is supporting families who are struggling financially. We have developed different support options in response to community needs and are hoping to access external funding so that we can integrate sliding scales and free or low cost child and parent support. We are also grateful for the support that comes through the use of a group space, or donated materials; it all helps us do the work we do.

NATHAN HAINES LIVE SHOW AT THE YARD

Nathan Haines is an internationally recognised producer and musician with a huge body of work and on April 6th he plays at the Yard where he returns to his dance music and DJ roots.

Nathan started Djing in the late 90s in the UK and his DJ sets bring his wealth of passion and knowledge of dance music, jazz, disco and house into one high energy set.

As a known saxophonist of his generation his DJ sets feature him playing live over his own productions and more.

“I have always loved playing in Raglan! The last time was about 10 years ago with my live band at the RSA with my friend an vocalist Kevin Mark Trail visiting from London. I remember it was a fantastic night with a very very enthusiastic crowd. I am also good friends with Cian (Ulo’s Kitchen) and we have known each other through the music scene for coming up to 30 years. I first played for Cian when he was running a night with DJ MU from Fat Freddies in Wellington with DJ Manuel Bundy…this was back in 1995 I think.

So there’s a lot history between myself and Cian and I have massive respect for his time at Conch in Auckland (which was the coolest record store ever) and with what he’s done at Ulo’s Kitchen and with putting on gigs in Raglan over the last 15 years. He’s knows his stuff that’s for sure! He’s always about supporting the music and and supporting cool places to be able to play the music that matters. We are talking about the real music here, not music that is subject to the vagaries and whims of fashion or charts, but the music that is the basis of dance music culture globally. It’s a big big genre with a lot of different styles, but all of us involved in underground music know it when we hear it and we support each other.

I have a new album called “Notes” coming out in the UK/Europe and Japan (on Wonderful Noise) and of course in NZ and Australia on Loop Recordings. It’s my 11th solo album and has taken me 10 years. It was initially started with the late UK based producer Phil Asher but with his passing 2 years ago I've collaborated with close friend

underground dance music community of which I am blessed to be a part of”.

The sixth Wander Women Adventure Race will take place in Raglan on Saturday 4 May 2024. The race is designed by women, for women and is both a great introduction to adventure racing for beginners, while optional extra checkpoints provide the right level of challenge for experienced teams.

Wander Women is a navigational team race – in teams of either two or four fabulous wāhine, teams will navigate a stunning secret course by foot and mountain bike to collect checkpoints and complete fun mystery activities along the way in either the short or medium secret course.

Event Organiser, Fiona Cederman said: “Every year, Wander Women Adventure Race is held in a different location – I’m so excited to showcase beautiful Raglan this May and bring teams here to take part. Teams will have a unique experience, navigating the course which includes amazing and exclusive views.

“Wander Women is more than an adventure race. It’s also a well-deserved break and girls weekend away. Locals can expect to see teams enjoying restaurants, cafes, local activities and shopping while they are here for the weekend.

“Wander Women Adventure Race is really special – the atmosphere is so supportive and teams have lots of fun out on the course and over the weekend. Team entries are still available at soakedinadventure.co.nz – we’d love to have you join the adventure on 4 May in Raglan.”

Race venue announcement: Race HQ and the start/ finish line will be announced to teams on Saturday 27 April 2024 - one week before race day.

“I’ll be playing lots of new productions from my upcoming album, plus stuff from previous albums like Squire For Hire and Sound Travels, and also brand new music from all my producer friends from around the globe representing the

“In my lifetime I have seen dance music culture grow from strength to strength in New Zealand, and I hope to weave the stories of this culture and of my music and that of my close friends into 3 hours of joyous music.”

Race day timings: Registration opens at Race HQ at 6.30am on Saturday 4 May 2024. Medium Course race briefing will begin at 7.30am and race start at 8am. Short course race briefing will be at 8.30am and race start at 9am.

Short course overview: The Wander Women short course is suitable for beginners and first-time adventure racers. In teams of two or four, the Wander Women will navigate the secret short course to collect checkpoints by mountain bike and foot. The navigation will be basic and appropriate for everyone, and the mountain biking will be non-technical. The race is set so most teams will finish in between 2-6 hours – the course includes 5-7km walk/jog off road and mountain biking 10-15km.

Medium course overview: The Wander Women medium course is also designed for beginners; however the terrain may be tougher than the short course. The medium course has optional extra checkpoints which mean experienced racers can set the right level of challenge for their team. The race is set so that most teams will finish between 5 –9 hours – the course includes 10-15km walk/jog off road and mountain biking approximately 25km on forestry and farmland.

A25 TH EASTER AT SHOW OFF

Ilove the stories of how people meet their lovers, fall in love (or not fall in love!) and how different couples hook-up prior to this melting pot of school-playground connection.

Many parents struggle with identity change, firstly in the wilderness of physiological change in pregnancy, followed by practical changes in our life-style, this means that maintaining our adult friendships gets tested when we raise our kids.

Just before Christmas last year Jess’s husband Jair asked if I could collect their son from school for a few days while he was away, as Jess would be teaching dance and they could see a calendar crisis ahead.

“Of course,” I said, “Where are you off to?” (knowing that they are both still connected to the national and international performance world).

“Oh, I will be in Wellington, I am a flying Elf next week”. At this point I was sure that I needed to make better efforts maintaining these adult friendships. Who wouldn’t want to be friends with a flying elf?!

Before long I found out how Jess and Jair met, and I couldn’t keep it to myself. I proudly present: a local love story, the foundation of the dream-teamsuper-couple that make up our local Dance and Circus company Freedom 2 Fly.

Q: Tell me about when you first met? What was life like then?

Jess: When we first met I was a dancer on a cruise ship, living the dream, haha.. I was traveling the world, doing what I love and getting paid for it, I couldn't have felt happier! Then I saw Jay and his team performing and practicing and I was like.. WOW.. NEXT LEVEL, I wanna do what they do! Also Jay was like this gorgeous tiny Tarzan with his long curly hair, flicking it around as he literally flew around the stage on the top deck and doing handstands as we sailed under the Sydney Harbour bridge. It was next level kinda stuff that blew my mind. I wasn't sold on him being for me, but he grew on me. I realised I actually really liked him one day when a member of his team fell during a show. My roommate and I ran upstairs (it was the first show we hadn’t watched) and we heard an alarm to get the medical team to the top deck, I was horrified Jay had hurt himself so we ran up in our pjs and saw him helping his team mate be wheeled off to the medical centre. It was pretty bad, but it wasn't Jay and that's when I realised I actually had feelings for this COLOMBIAN CIRCUS DUDE haha. I didn't want him to go home.

introduced (round of names and nationality sort of thing) it was a “Uuuuuuuuu!” from everyone else when I said ‘Jessica is an easy name to remember’.

Q: Tell me about what you thought when you saw this person? Was there a spark, or a mutual appreciation, or another emotion like anger? Passion? Intrigue? ... Throw some words at me!

We were being introduced to our teams his cirque team and our dancing team and I said my name.. he said, “Oh that's an easy name to remember,” and everyone went, “OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH,” and I went bright red and was like.. what just happened? haha.. We were actually wing men for our roommates who were wanting to tap each other. Their thing went nowhere and we ended up together forever.

Q: And how about your families, what would or what

I think my family ADORE HIM! He is fun, helpful, easy to talk to and gets on with everyone.

My family has always thought I married a princess :) They love Jessica and they find her Spanish super cute, on the other hand, as soon as Jessica's dad found out she was dating a Colombian, he said, "Colombia is not a place to raise children" and now they have me every Christmas at the table :) They are super lovely and supportive in-laws.

What are the big dreams ahead? Tell me about

The feeling was more like a challenge - Was she too pretty? Out of my league. So, what happened next? Well, she became a more and more interesting girl, she started to learn Spanish, she can dance (especially salsa), she is a super funny and fun person to be around. Within a couple of months, I thought she was the whole package!

We want to build a purpose built studio theatre for Raglan, we want a place that serves as a studio that can host multiple classes at the same time, Dance, Circus, Aerials, Performances etc. that outlives us and serves our community into the future! The thought of building something that could inspire future generations to be awesome, creative and inspirational is very exciting and everything we have set our minds on until now has happened. This one is a huge, terrifying, but a possible goal!

This weekend marks our 25th Easter at Show Off. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal staff and customers over the 25 years. You are great.

We almost broke up forever when we got off the contract and went our separate ways. I was like.. DAMN I LIKE HIM ALOT.. that was a sad goodbye. I was offered a world cruise contract as dance captain and also a contract on the same ship as him but around the pacific (which I had already done 4 times) and not as dance captain. I asked him what he thought I should do.. he said.. “I don't know” ( I just wanted him to come with me. He didn't, so I took the world cruise to spite him. Then we were both sad and he said, “What, Why did you choose that?” I said, “’Cos you didn’t say you wanted me to come on the cruise with you”, and he said, “But I do,”

Pop in and see us and check out our great selection of handmade New Zealand Jade (Pounamu) jewellery and local art work. Our location is 2 Bow Street, the water end of town. Wishing you all a lovely Easter holiday.

Too many big dreams ahead, to get a purpose build studio for F2F, keep performing internationally with our own produced shows, buy a house in Raglan, see our kids growing in a such a good environment to name a few. We feel super happy and privileged to live in a supportive community like Raglan, we started to feel like locals now (after 6 years living here) and the feeling of belonging to this town and this country, make us wake up every morning and feel blessed and inspired to keep doing our best and enjoying every single step of it.

At Hair Test for Health, we use hair testing as a unique way of identifying dietary and environmental sensitivities, mineral imbalances and heavy metal toxicity to help us evaluate your health.

It just so happened the director of recruiting managed to fix it so I ended up not taking the world cruise and was on the next contract with him. This was one of those ‘meant to be moments’ that magically brought us together. I ended up meeting his family after our first contract. That was wild. I didn't speak much Spanish, had bright red hair and he didn't' live in the safest of places.

This non-invasive test uses a small sample of hair which is sent away for analysis. A naturopathic consultation will determine which test is best for you. Hair testing is suitable for the whole family, from babies to grandparents.

Jair: We met in Singapore Nov 2009 on a cruise ship. It was super funny the fact we couldn't understand each other and had to use a mutual English friend to translate (she didn't speak any Spanish by the way). I was part of a 6 acrobats troupe, and Jess was part of the resident dancers cast, when we were officially

MANU BAY SINGLE FIN CLASSIC

THE LOCAL RAG SURFING SERIES COVER SURFING NEWS IN RAGLAN.

The Local Rag caught up with Marcus Hodgkinson and Luke Hughes to hear about the Manu Bay Single Fin Classic - a celebration of community and the spirit of surfing.

When did it start and who was behind it?

Marcus: The single fin event was first conceived at the Camenzind surfboard factory over Friday night beers by myself, Mark Camenzind, Kyle Leuthart, and others. We wanted a fun community event that wasn't so focused on the competitive side of surfing, to put the fun element back in and have a chance to ride and show off all the fantastic old single fin boards that everyone had collected over the years.

This brings out great stories of where the boards came from and who shaped them, like the history around the Wilson surfboard brand that was a big part of Raglan surfing history back in the '70s - shaped by Don Wilson.

His family and extended family come to the event and compete and share their stories. His old boards are some of the most sought after around Raglan and NZ by surfboard collectors. The event has been a success in linking up old Raglan with the new and sharing some great history with everyone. It brings out other surfers in the community that would normally never compete and even drags out the old crew with the lure of a free beer, who actually rode these boards back in the day like Malcolm Davidson, Chris Banks, Mickey T, Crowie, Tony Randrup, Terry Gibbs, and Ken Thomas...who were all in the Point Boardriders club back in their era.

How did the event go this year in terms of conditions?

Luke: The conditions this year were near ideal; clean head high waves with light winds, sunny skies, and high tides for the majority of the day, while coffee from Coaster Coffee kept energy levels high, and

the BBQ from Raglan Surf Co kept hungry stomachs full.

Who was involved?

Luke: The draw is limited to 72 entrants comprised of long-standing Point Boardriders members and long-term local residents, as well as the wider community who come to enjoy the atmosphere and culture of grassroots surfing.

What were some of the highlights of the day?

Luke: Aside from the surfing, the boards on show, and the community turnout, the Pie Eating competition, where contestants are required to eat a mince and cheese pie as quickly as they can, is always an entertaining spectacle. The post-event prize giving held at Raglan Surf Co. allowed everyone to cap off an awesome day with live music thanks to Abstract Fish Lung, Jamin-I, and Selector X, food from Sidekick, as well as spot prizes for all competitors.

Results to report?

Results of the main event were Theo Morse 1st, Luke Hughes 2nd, Van Camenzind 3rd, Tom Robinson 4th, and Jake Haines 5th, while Luke Mathers won the adults' pie eating and Alani Morse the junior pie eating competition. Best performance was won by Conor McLennan and Michael Nation, best woman Brie Bennett, best junior Van Camenzind, best senior Mark 'Heckor' Brightwell, best dressed Liam Couldan-Lavers, and Kook of the Day awarded to James Dickinson.

Who would you like to thank?

All of the competitors, spectators, and volunteers who helped make the day what it was. Local businesses for their kind donations; Raglan Bakery, Everyone's Store, Jenny Watts Physio, Camenzind Surfboards, Coaster Coffee, Dreamview Creamery, Aroha Sushi, B Rex Photo Design, Hughes Surfboards as well as main and presenting sponsor Raglan Surf Company. Marcus Hodgkinson, Luke and Ariel Hughes for their organizational efforts as well as the Point Boardriders Club for officiating and running the day. We can't wait to run again in 2025!

Over the past few years Geraldine has made a return to film photography - the art she learnt back in her school days. She has enjoyed the slower pace of film, taking more time to take the photo itself and also taking less photos. Geraldine is planning to hold an exhibition this year showcasing her film work from the past 3 years - so watch this space!

Follow her journey on instagram @g.design_photo and search these hashtags to see more of her work: #geraldineburns #raglanbyg

Geraldine is part of a collective of Raglan artists with a bricks and mortar store on Bow Street called JET Collective - look for the metal shop front with the aeroplane nose above the door, in between The Shack cafe and Ray White. Geraldine is there each Wednesday, so pop in and say hi!

Celebrating 20 years of innovation

Urban Homes, the Waikato’s most award-winning Master Builder, commemorates its 20th anniversary this year. Reflecting on the journey, Managing Director Daniel Klinkenberg reminisces about starting from humble beginnings in 2004 with a vision shared with his wife, Bronni.

Urban Homes was a dream that Bronni and I shared. We wanted to create a company that didn’t just build homes; it built people.

To mark this milestone, Urban Homes is hosting a 20 Year Celebration Tour on Friday May 3rd, showcasing 10 remarkable homes packed full of inspiration.

Tickets will cost $50, must be pre-purchased and all proceeds will go to True Colours Children’s Health Trust, a charity that Urban Homes has supported for several years.

April’s Live & Local presents another great mix of Raglan acts, this time with music and stories from Brian Wilson, Freddy Limbert and Ngaronoa Renata.

Ngaronoa Renata brings another Medicine For The People set. These are always something special and feature different accompanists each time. A combination of pūrakau & oro (story-telling and sound), she will be sharing pūrakau and poetry accompanied with taonga pūoro and waiata.

Brian Wilson is making his first solo Live & Local appearance, having performed several times with ukulele group The Ragtimers and accompanied other acts with guitar and ukulele. Self-described as an aging hippy, Brian says he’ll be playing “An eclectic range of songs, some you may have heard before, but you still may not recognise them!”

Over the past 40 years you may have seen Fredmo (Freddy Limbert) behind the drums or perhaps on double bass (yes, he did start very young indeed, as long-time locals can attest). Having performed with numerous artists and bands, including on international tours, Freddy has accumulated a unique approach to music. For Live & Local Freddy says he will be “Plucking some stringed instruments and singing some songs from his travels”.

Soaring composition

Welcome to the enchanting world of life on Benseman Road- a place where nature and architecture harmoniously coexist. Nestled on a north-facing site, the home overlooks a panoramic wonderland to bask in sunshine. It epitomizes Raglan’s intrinsic link with land and sea, lifestyle and leisure, art, and whimsy.

Paying homage to the soaring birdlife, the home commands breathtaking views and empathy with the habitat. Tone and texture honour the artistry of architecture, while recognising this setting is the star. The concept of a bird in flight allows the practical function of separate wings – living in one, sleeping in the other, and unique features in between.

Raglan 112B Newton Road

Raglan 114A Newton Road

New Listing

Best view of the Bridal Veil Falls, hands down.

The Newton Homestead was originally positioned in the very best location to capture the very best views of the Waireinga, Bridal Veil Falls and her surrounding reserve and to this day she arguably still retains this honour. Of lesser and more common views this area offers, the Homestead provides generous vistas out towards, Aotea, Kawhia and onwards to Albatross Point as well as the ever changing and somewhat moody Mt Karioi. The homestead was built in an era of practicality when timber was cheap and 'big bones' were the norm, with separate Kitchen/ Dining, a ginormous Lounge and 4 bedrooms.

A bargain - asking less than cost.

This rare lifestyle opportunity is immaculately presented and brand new, so new in fact that we are expecting the final Code Compliance Certificate to be issued any day now! The 1.2 hectare (2.9 old fashioned acre) section is gently rolling with sweeping rural views, partly comprising 'the sleeping lady' that is Mt Karioi. With a little fencing there is the opportunity to have your own pony and/or grazing animals or alternatively just continue with the landscaping and develop more gardens. The bright and airy 158m2 home consists of a generous open plan living and kitchen space, 3 bedrooms.

Top of the world to ya!

This attractive section is near the end of Newton Road and borders the 'Waireinga' Bridal Veil Reserve. The views are delightful, the birdlife incredible as the reserve is a sanctuary where Tui, Kereru, Korimako and many others go to and from depending on where the seasonal food sources are located. There is a selection of potential building sites. This section is 8000m2 subject to the issue of title which isn't too far away. Call today for a subdivision scheme plan and other juicy information.

Raglan 397 Ruapuke Road

5 acre compact farmlet

It is rare to find a compact farmlet with as much on offer as 397 Ruapuke Road. For starters, the modern 2-bedroom home lies well for the morning sun and is tucked away from the prevailing westerly wind. The home is warm with double-glazed joinery throughout, a wood burner is on-hand to heat the spacious open plan Lounge, Dining and Kitchen quickly and the rest of the home with ease. The home is in tip top condition with plenty of internal storage, a separate laundry and 2 toilets. All of this comes complete with a garage/ shed/ workshop that could easily house the boat and other 'stuff'.
