oundsplash 2024 once again transformed Wainui Reserve in to a thriving hub of music, art and culture last month. This year, the festival spotlighted Raglan's homegrown talents, blending their fiery performances with a heartfelt homage to their roots.

Artists such as Reiki Ruawai, Muroki, and Flowidus proved to be the heart of the festival and delivered spellbinding shows, echoing the town's spirit. Muroki, performing alongside his sister Piri, etched

a lasting memory in the hearts of the locals. Raphael Henderson of Flowidus, with his electrifying performance, brought the first night to a spectacular close on the Summerhaze mainstage. A particularly heartfelt element of Soundsplash was the performers' nostalgic connection to the festival. Their journey from being wide-eyed children in the crowd to commanding the main stage brought a special, intimate dimension to their performances, resonating deeply with both artists and audience. Emerging talents like Abstract Fish Lungs and Luna Petzold De La Cruz also got their chance to shine, opening the

Outsides stage and injecting new energy into the event. Offstage, the Soundsplash team introduced significant changes to this year's event, notably a streamlined checkin process that drastically cut down wait times, garnering widespread praise from parents and the community alike. Improved transport logistics, including a revamped Raglan Airfield shuttle and additional buses from Auckland, greatly alleviated traffic. This year's festival also coincided with a tangi for local kuia Marleina Te Kanawa which saw an additional influx of about 800 people on Friday. In response, the

organisers worked with local iwi and whānau to implement additional traffic management in order to minimise any wider impact. Any concerns for traffic congestion however did not eventuate as traffic management were able to effectiviely keep the flow of vehicles moving throughout the day. Overall, it was a successfull Soundsplash - one for the books according to feedbcak from punters. With another Soundsplash under their belts, organaisers will now be undertaking their post-event analysis to look at how they can imporve the event for next year.

t’s lucky 13 for Finn Jackson and Jana Wernicke as they take on the mantle of promoting a Raglan institution that hit the decks back in the summer of 2010.

No strangers to the music scene, the dynamic duo – known as Dark Faces in the DJ world – is set to make their mark on The Yot Club’s iconic Sunday Sessions. “I've always been a big fan of the Sunday Sessions when Steve Reid used to run them,” Finn says. “He ran them wholeheartedly, every summer, and he did a great job of building it from the ground up.” Born and bred in Raglan, Finn remembers the sessions being one of the first gigs he attended when he was old enough to gain entry. “It was such a great event. I’ve been going regularly since I was 18,” he says. One of New Zealand’s premiere summer events, on its reputation alone, the Sunday Sessions has always attracted international acts and garnered a following of music lovers from Raglan and beyond. Originally from Germany, Sunday Sessions was Jana’s introduction to New Zealand music events when she came into town six years ago – and she loved it. “It really touched my heart, there was so much beauty behind it and it really brought the community together,” Jana says. “This is what we want to bring back to the town because we think it's an amazing way for the community to come together, especially on summer days. So, it's really important to us to bring that back to life.” Finn says Steve was a huge vinyl fan and the early evening DJ sets in the courtyard is something they are keen to continue. “The vinyl aspect is a legacy of the Sunday Sessions that we will carry on. But we want to bring in acts across the musical spectrum so we can offer something really great for the town.” As well as international gigs, the pair wants Sunday Sessions to still be the place where local acts can test the waters. “There are a ton of DJs keen to come and play in Raglan. It’s definitely a hotspot on the DJ circuit. But we want to blend that with quality local acts and nurture up-and-coming talents as well,” he says.

Sunday Sessions has faced some challenging times in the past few years, not only with the Covid lockdowns but local supporters had lost faith in their favourite summer event. “Understandably, it’s been a bit of a battle to win the community back over but I think we have got them on our side again,” Finn says. A power cut during a Sunday Session Halloween event and the odd rainy summer Sunday highlighted to Finn and Jana that they were earning back that community support. “People just stayed kept dancing in the courtyard and kept the vibe going,” Jana says. It’s that vibe and the energy from others that keeps Finn and Jana getting up on a Sunday morning to set up for the afternoon. “When you know how stoked the musicians are to come and play here, and when you have people going home at the end of the night and saying they've had

a great time. Despite its challenges - and it can be really hard work – the ripple effect from that is really fulfilling,” Finn says. Keeping the punters happy with the awesome beats is one part of what makes Sunday Sessions a great night out; the couple have also got Piace Pizza’s woodfired plant-based pizzas on tap. “They’re just behind Indis so you can order it at the bar and they deliver it straight to the dancefloor,” Finn says. The couple are also organising a repeat of their successful boutique music and art festival ‘This Must Be It’ on Saturday, March 23 with tickets on sale soon. The 30-hour festival brings together local and international acts, art installations and food in the foothills at Ruapuke. Sunday Sessions run at The Yot Club every Sunday starting at 6pm until 1am. elcome back to the Mental Health column for 2024. This month I spoke with Resa. Resa has lived in Raglan for seven years and is originally from Berlin, Germany. She has a weekly radio show on Raglan Community Radio on Tuesdays from 7.30pm and works as an event officer at Waikato District Council. What is your relationship like with your mental health? Is it something that you think about often? It's been in the forefront of my mind for at least 15 years. I think in my mid 20s it started to be an issue. I thought, ‘ok I have to attack this and deal with it properly.’ Ever since then it's been an everyday thing to check in. I try to find the right feeling words to describe it. Sometimes it's just ‘I'm happy, I'm sad, I'm angry.’ Those are the three main ones but I'm trying to be a bit more specific; ‘I'm grieving, I'm disappointed, I'm jealous’. Then I try to move through it and not avoid it. I think we are really good at distracting ourselves if we aren’t feeling great. We don't get taught how to deal with that stuff and our parents haven’t been taught. If I look at my whānau, there's no awareness of that stuff. There should be a school subject on how to prepare for emotions. What I get stuck on is this negative loop; I'm a bad person, I can't do anything right. You just keep talking yourself down and making yourself feel worse. The way you talk to yourself is important. What was your relationship like with your mental health when you were younger? My parents got divorced when I was 4 or 5 and then my mum went down a road of addiction and bad partners. From the age of seven to twelve, I saw my mum really struggling. You feel that energy but I didn't want to talk badly about her to dad so I kept it to myself and it bubbled up in other ways. My report card always said ‘Teresa is never finding the right words to talk to her peers, she's really rude.’ The way that stress manifested, I didn't know how to socially behave. I was really struggling with that and lying awake at night and going over the things that were happening and trying to deal with them. As a kid, you don't know how to handle strong emotions. It was mainly fear for my

mum. I would dissociate and disconnect from it. But then it means you disconnect from all of your feelings. My dad later on said he saw that I was struggling, he just didn't know how to cope with it. He didn't want to take me away from my mum because that would have been really hard too. That was the thing though, I was there for her. I was trying to fix her. I was her parent and I sometimes feel like I still am. The way our relationship formed was never the mother-daughter relationship in a typical sense. I always felt like it was me taking care of her. Now, I'm a caretaker. I want to fix other people's problems. When you've been at your lowest point, what is it that's got you through? Therapy for sure. I notice if you talk to your friends, they're gonna give you friendship advice. Having a neutral person to check things through and get help from really was important. With that I learned to understand those things as phases. I wrote them down and they’re on my bedroom mirror. Phrases like ‘this won't last forever’, ‘you won't always feel this way’, ‘this too shall pass’. I see those every morning, and think, ok yesterday I felt shit but I will move through it and I will be fine. Sometimes that takes a day, a week, a month, a couple months, whatever it is. Having the trust that it is not always going to be like this. That has helped a lot. You are not your thoughts. Have you felt the cultural differences in your relationships moving from Berlin to a small town in New Zealand? Totally. Being German stereotypically means we’re quite blunt. We don't shy away from conflict. I'm used to that in my work life and in my personal life. I came here and everybody is so friendly and so happy and then I discovered that lots of that is a facade. “She'll be right.” It’s the classic Kiwi attitude which I sometimes struggle with. But then you notice which people you're drawn to and I'm good at noticing that and stepping away from people who I’m not feeling. When I found out that New Zealand has quite a high suicide rate, it kind of made sense. People just don't talk about their stuff in the same way. What are some of the lessons that you've learned? That there is no easy solution to a complex problem. It's not just going for a surf and talking to a therapist and taking some meds and it’ll be fine. It's a process and a lifelong lesson to learn. It's never going to be done. I've always

been a person who is either super high or super low. I’m realising I can exist in the in between. Often things are just ok. It takes so long to be comfortable living in that middle space. If you've never lived in that state, then it feels like something is wrong. This can reflect in the way you choose your friends or your partners. Everything has to be high intensity, in one way or the other. It's funny because I sometimes believe that's why I'm still in Raglan. Being a city girl who lived in Berlin most of her life, coming to NZ and having so much space and nature has helped a lot. Sometimes just stepping away from home is enough to lift you. I don't know where I'd be without the ocean. It washes everything away. I had a bad day yesterday, so I went to Manu Bay for a surf. It was perfect conditions and I was in for a three hour session. For the last hour I was in the water alone with the moon and it was epic. It made my whole day switch around.

What are some of the tools in your toolbox? The mirror mantras are something you see every day. If I'm going through a rough time, that's what I always come back to. Move through it. I talk to myself all the time. I think it's how I process. If it stays internal in your brain you keep mulling it around but if you write it down or say it out loud, it changes immediately. Sometimes people don’t take the time. It's just feeling then reacting. Step back for a bit and reassess. Look at what is actually happening. Your thoughts can mess things up all the time. When it comes to regular coping mechanisms; exercise, yoga, breath. Deep breaths are a nervous system regulator. We do flat breathing during the day and I notice when I get anxious my breathing is so shallow. I try to do bigger breaths. It's different for everybody.

INTRODUCING R AGL A N FOOD JOUR NEYS Welcome to Raglan Food Journeys. A new feature that will take you through the heart and soul of our local Raglan food landscape. I hope to explore the rich tapestry of stories woven into the fabric of our community, all through the lens of food. This will be more than just a collection of recipes; it’s a celebration of the diverse and vibrant voices that make our local food scene so unique. Delving into the kitchens of passionate home cooks, chatting with local food artisans, and exploring the creations of our local foodies will be the inspiration for this page.

M

y name is Shannon and I will be curating this new page. I have lived in Raglan on and off for close to 20 years and in that time I have worn many hats; from working in local cafes, running a yoga studio, and working as a massage therapist. For several years I worked as a cook on sailing boats and in the catering and hospitality industries. This gave me the great opportunity to study and learn from chefs in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the USA. I grew up in a house of hunters, gatherers, and gardeners. My Dad Alan was my first cooking inspiration, I think he missed his calling as a wild food chef. There was always some wild food from the land or sea and a big vege garden which kept us going throughout the year. This seasonal thread has stayed with me throughout my life and inspires my cooking today. For me, summer is all about hanging out with friends and family, eating and sharing food gathered from our gardens

In Season - Tomatoes Best eaten straight off the vine and warmed by the summer sun, tomato season makes me happy every year.

Quick Ideas By salting tomatoes and letting them sit in a colander for at least 15 minutes, the juices will collect in the bowl below and can be made into a tasty vinaigrette. This makes the tomato flavour super punchy in any salad containing tomatoes. Chop tomatoes, tear up a few basil leaves, and add some fresh mozzarella with a good drizzle of olive oil for a classic caprese salad. Make a cherry tomato and walnut pesto to have on its own or add to pasta. Grill some cherry tomatoes with a little olive oil. Add it into a food processor with garlic, lemon zest, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper and walnuts (you can get some beautiful ones from Shai’s stall at the Raglan Growers Market). Blend until desired texture. Tomato Facts • Storing tomatoes in the fridge affects their flavour. • If you have grown or purchased an abundance of tomatoes they can be frozen and then defrosted throughout the year for sauces and chutneys. • The active constituent in tomatoes is Lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant. • Tomatoes have travelled to space! 600,000 seeds went to the International Space Station before being grown in classrooms in Canada to understand the effect of outer space on seed growth.

and collected from nature or purchased at our markets and supermarkets. From this comes BBQs, big salads, shared feasts, and homestyle food from the heart. I’m looking forward to sharing recipes from my kitchen which are seasonal, local, and delicious. I will also be connecting with local foodies, market holders, home gardeners, and food producers in order to share their stories and food inspirations. I would like to share tips and tricks for saving money on food in this current climate and ways to reduce food waste for you and your family. I believe that cooking with what’s available and in season brings the cost of food down naturally as fresh food at its most abundant is generally at a lower price point. And - fresh produce just tastes better when it’s at its peak. Taking the opportunity to preserve what’s in season can keep you going all year round as does swapping and trading with friends, neighbours, and family. My hope for this page is to help grow community connections through food, promote our local food landscape, and make food together with shared recipes.

PLUM KASUNDI In the summer months, I love to make a stash of chutneys to use throughout the year and to give away to friends and family. My lovely friend Sarah generously gifted me a huge bag of plums and my mind went straight here. Kasundi, traditionally made with tomatoes, is an Indian spiced chutney. The richness of the plums complements the acidity of the vinegar and combination of Indian spices. Although great on its own with cheese and crackers, it is versatile enough to be used on toasties, dolloped on curries, or as an accompaniment to many meat dishes. This recipe makes about four 650g jars. Ingredients ½ cup ghee (or a neutral vegetable oil) 3 Tbsp cumin seeds 3 Tbsp black mustard seeds 2 Tbsp nigella seeds (optional) 150g ginger (fresh and grated) 80g garlic (fresh and chopped) 2kg plums (stones removed) or tomatoes 350 g dark brown sugar or white sugar (dark sugar gives a more caramelised depth) 3 Tbsp chilli powder (this is balanced by the sugar, add less or more to your taste) 1 ½ Tbsp coriander powder 1 ½ Tbsp turmeric ½ tsp ground clove (optional) 2 ½ Tbsp salt 415ml malt vinegar 1. Heat ghee in a large pot over a medium-high heat. 2. Add cumin seeds, black mustard seeds, and nigella seeds (optional), cook until the seeds sizzle and pop. 3. Add plums, stir well, then turn heat to medium-low. 4. Add all other ingredients, stir well, and cook for 1-1½ hours, stirring occasionally. You want the consistency to be nice and thick - dip a teaspoon in and let it cool for a few minutes to check for desired thickness. 5. Pour into hot sterilised jars and seal. Keeps for up to a year in a dark cool space in the pantry. Notes Ghee is clarified butter but can be swapped for a neutral oil. You can easily swap out tomatoes for plums in this recipe. Nigella seeds are an Indian spice, they can be left out of this recipe but do add a smokey element. Recipes can always be adjusted to your taste - if you like chilli, add more. TŌKŪ K A INGA K IDS WITH RUBY GIBBS

T

ōkū Kainga Kids was started by Bryony Wilson and Ruby Gibbs. We aim to provide a safe, supportive, and encouraging space for children with special needs or those who don't easily fit into other groups.

After spending the last few years working as teacher aides at a specialist school in Hamilton, we realised our community had no similar offering. We wanted to focus our skills here in Whāingaroa. Ruby was born and raised in Raglan. She achieved a postgraduate degree in psychology, specialising in behavioural analysis, before leaving Raglan to travel the world. She returned home in

2020 due to the pandemic. Bryony was raised in Hamilton but settled in Raglan a few years ago. She also spent her 20s travelling the world before discovering a passion for psychology. She is completing her Master's at the University of Waikato, focusing on children with autism spectrum disorder. We started our programme at the beginning of January and have been running it on Wednesdays and Thursdays with a group of up to seven kids each day, ranging in age from 5 to 15, with varying needs. You may have seen us out and about in the community as we explored our backyard. We spent our days running around the Wainui Bush Park collecting supplies for art projects, building bridges across the creeks and practising our knot-

tying. We also took advantage of the sunny days to explore the many swimming spots around Whāingaroa. On the days when the weather didn't cooperate, we worked as a team to bake cakes, create art projects and do science experiments. While we had a busy schedule, we focused on helping these kids develop problem-solving and social skills and spend time with their peers in a safe space. The most rewarding aspect for us was watching these kids learn about themselves and each other and form genuine bonds. At Tōkū Kainga Kids, we believe that every child has the ability to connect, but for some, this looks different or takes more time. Being surrounded by their peers in smaller groups creates opportunities for individual growth and social learning for

these children. We aim to foster a safe, non-judgmental environment where these kids can thrive. Now that the holidays are ending, we will offer a one-day-a-week programme during the term. We will continue fostering social connections in smaller, specialised groups while working on individual development goals. We have spaces available if this sounds like a good fit for you and your child. Finally, we are grateful for our sponsors, Jamie at PKF Hamilton and Sue at Bizworx Raglan. We appreciate your support and trust in our vision. If you or your business would be interested in sponsorship opportunities, please get in touch. For all enquiries, please get in touch with us at tokukaingakids@gmail.com.

C A R EER FORCE A PPR ENTICE UNLOCKS POTENTI A L FOR NEURODIVERSE YOUTH An opportunity to enrol in, and then complete a Careerforce | Te Pūkenga Youth Work apprenticeship with employer Te Ratonga Poumanaaki, meant he could expand his own understanding to better support these young people. “I passed my driving test, and I got my commercial driver’s licence, but these were the only qualifications that I had ever previously achieved. I am so happy,” says Morgen. As a Kaimahi Tautoko, Morgen has worked oneon-one with pre-teen children who have neurodiverse conditions. Together with his wife Ana, they are also supporting many of their own whānau and mokopuna with the same conditions and are getting these young people to realise their full potential. “I am able to break into their way of thinking and create an environment for them to thrive,” says Morgen. “It’s an incredible thing to see and to witness. Like seeing the child that pokes their head up out of the mud, they take a deep breath and are finally free of restrictions. It’s just absolutely amazing. I just love this work.” Morgen started making a difference at home with his own grandniece who was diagnosed with severe FASD. The world doesn’t operate the same for people with FASD, according to Morgen. He and his wife supported her continually, daily, even making sure she got up in the morning, ready for school, which she wouldn’t have done on her own. This helped ensure she could operate in the environment, opening up chances and opportunities that she wouldn’t have otherwise had. a portal for them. They can still achieve things, go places and be successful.” Enrolling in the entirely work-based Youth Work apprenticeship with Careerforce was a requirement of his job at Te Ratonga Poumanaaki. “I was really nervous – I was 58 at the time and thought I’d have to relearn how to learn.” Once he got to grips with the learning, Morgen says it really helped him in his work. “Sometimes I couldn’t understand what those kids were going through, and I made some mistakes, but the Careerforce programme and the way that it was set out really helped. It was fantastic. “I could figure out what was going on with the kids, know how to deal with them and what motivated them, and apply what I’d learnt.” Careerforce apprentices are assigned a dedicated apprenticeship advisor who provides pastoral care and support throughout the learning. Apprenticeship Advisor Alyssia Paekau was assigned to Morgen, and he described her support as fundamental to his graduation. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it by myself without Alyssia.” Morgen also praised the whole Careerforce programme and would recommend it to others. Morgen has lots to celebrate now, not only with the achievements of the young people he has supported, but now having successfully graduated with his own apprenticeship. Keen to keep studying, Morgan says he would like to further study mental health, and youth work, and he is now seeking a new role closer to his Waikato home. For more information about the Youth Work apprenticeship, please contact Careerforce, a business division of Te Pūkenga.

ocal Businesses offer invaluable support to local school leavers by offering them apprenticeships to get started on their intended career. Jacqui from the Local Rag caught up with Cherie Nathan and Sophie Collier from Rock It. Cherie the owner of Rock It since 2021 is currently supporting Sophie who grew up in in the area.

Chatting to Cherie Rock It 2024 What have you enjoyed most about the experience of running Rock It?

Cherie You have supported Sophie in her employment and career. Can you describe what this has looked like and why you decided to get involved?

Being involved in a small community that has shown us great support, getting to know everyone coming in and working with an awesome team.

I am a trained assessor and have worked with apprentices throughout my 18 years in hospo. Sophie decided school wasn’t her thing; she enjoyed working on the weekends at Rock It so we had a chat and we thought it would be a great opportunity for her.

How would you describe your team at Rock It? AMAZING!! We have been so lucky with our staff; everyone that has become a part of our team has brought something that makes Rock It what it is today. The Team is hard working and supports us in our business goal while bringing love and laughter.

Sophie Tell us about how you started working at Rock It.

What is happening at Rock It in 2024?

I started working at Rock It 3 years ago. I was called by my sister who was unwell at the time to cover her shift and I fell in love with the vibe of Rock It. What made you decide to continue on and pursue hospo as a career pathway after leaving school? I realised school wasn’t for me. I have always wanted to travel and hospo gives you great opportunities to do that. How has Cherie supported you through your apprenticeship? Cherie and the team provide a comfortable learning environment; she is always there to provide support when I need her. What skills have you acquired? The biggest skill I have learnt is people skills; we have a lot of people walk through Rock It’s door and everyone has different needs. I have also learnt

We are wanting to bring more fun based events to Raglan that utilise our beautiful deck and lawn, e.g. lawn markets, family evenings, live music etc. We have a new Head Chef Darius who will be working on creating seasonal menus. Our main goal is to continue to provide an awesome space for everyone and anyone here at Rock It. We want you to leave with a bigger smile.

customer and staff confidentiality and customer service. This year will be more around LCQ licence, cocktail trainings etc. What’s the long term plan? I would love to finish my apprenticeship and then look into travel; I would also love to be an event

s we begin a new academic year, we connect with Larry Fisher, who teaches Surfing at Raglan Area School, to learn about the latest developments and plans for 2024. As we start the new year and new term what are some of the events happening for Academy students in the coming months? In the first few weeks, it's all about getting to know each other, and developing our culture and expectations collectively Then it's getting the students prepared physically, technically, strategically and mentally to compete in the National Grom series around the country. This consists of competitions at Mount Maunganui(last week), Whangamata, Piha and Gisborne. Then the final big event at Raglan - the Backdoor King and Queen of the Point where the students get to surf in the Junior Division as well as the Open Division against the older more experienced surfers at Manu Bay where they surf daily. What are you looking forward to about the year ahead with the Academy? I'm looking forward to getting to know the new students as well as further developing relationships with the returning students. I am hoping that the Academy programme along with my and Deane’s input will be a benefit to the students’ surfing progression, academic achievement and personal development.

When you look back at 2023 what were some of the highlights of the programme? For me, the highlight of 2023 was having the responsibility and maybe even a bit of pressure of teaching and coaching local kids whose dads were surfers I looked up to back in the ’80s, 90’s early 2000s, as well as the dads who I surf with still today and have all contributed significantly to our community. -These students to name a few are the likes of Pipiri Kelly whose dad Maioha Kelly was one of the best surfers in New Zealand in the 80’s and early 90’s. He had the best tight backhand rail carve in the business and still does to this day. -Deane Hishon (my fellow Academy Coach) has probably locked in the most water time at Manu Bay over the 3 decades, and his daughter Keira was in her first year in 2023. Surfline Forecaster James Frazerhurst may be currently the only guy in Raglan at his age who somehow surfs between 2-3 times a day every day and had his youngest daughter Lani in the Academy. -Whale Bay Resident Tom Wellby has trained many Raglan surfers and other athletes in his home gym. His son Tawhia finished his third year with the Academy. -Local legend shaper Mark Camenzind better known as Spoony, who has shaped boards for over half of the Raglan Surf community over the years. His daughter Jade is in the Academy and her brother Jarvis was in the Academy the year before, and more

than likely, Spooney’s youngest Van will be in next year when he is old enough.

is in the Academy and seems to be following the footsteps of the old boy.

-Current Raglan Point Boardriders vice president Marcus Hodgkinson’s daughter Molly was in there as well.

Other highlights were the competitive results and wins, but what was more rewarding was seeing the students’ enthusiasm and improvement in their surfing and their growth in character as kind and confident young people.

-Paul “Polly” Clarke was part of the crew that held Indies in check during the 80’s and early 90’s; his daughter Meila was another under the tutelage of myself and Deane Hishon. -Jeremy Gee who is the dawn patrol king at Indicators and someone who always sniffs out a barrel had his daughter Ayla in the Academy. -Big Gary Greetis another Indicators stalwart. His son Ollie was another secondgeneration surfer in the Academy. - Jahmin had a great year in the Academy and his dad Simon Thompson is another keen and competent Raglan surfer. - The blonde bomber goofyfoot duo of Tim and son Luke Dymond. Tim is a frequent surfer at Manu Bay and you will notice him with his trademark big yellow smiley face on all his surfboards. You will see Luke this summer working down at the Raglan SurfCo Surfshop. - Local Pipe Master plumber Richard Morse had his boy Theo in there. - Finally, Leon Santorik who was in the Academy himself in its first two years is arguably one of the best backhand surfers to navigate the barrels of the Manu Bay Ledge section when it is big and heavy. His boy Tava

We ran a series of interviews with surfing families who had students in the programme in 2023. Do you have more surfers from the next generation of keen surfing families onboard this year? Long time Raglan surfer Keith Redman who has longboarded and paddleboarded for many moons at Manu Bay and surrounding surf spots has his grandson Daniel joining the Academy this year. Daniel is a talented basketballer and has a real passion for surfing. He could be an interesting one to interview. Have the students from out of town found host families to live with? You must be very appreciative of these families who invite students into their home and support them for the year. Yes, the few out-of-town students have all found homes through our amazing and hard-working homestay coordinator Wayne Morris. Wayne does a great job finding people, families and homes that are willing to take on a student. Yes, it is still a big responsibility to take on the care of a teenager and we are very thankful for the families who have currently got students or who had them in the past.

n this monhts' feature, the Local Rag chats to the team behind gardening company, Jayd. Describe your new business.

JAYD is a gardening company for people who lack room for traditional gardens. It was started by myself, Nathaniel Holmes, and my best mate, Jayden Boylan. Our first product is a hydroponic pot that allows people to grow fresh herbs on a windowsill, book shelf, or table. Our goal is to grow into a company with a range of products that allow people to grow food in non traditional gardening spaces. How did you decide to run with this concept and idea? This idea stuck because there is a large trend pushing indoor plants and we found a gap in the market for growing indoor veggies. A lot of products on the market lacked creativity, style, and simplicity. It seemed overly complicated and so we thought we would make the process easier for people to understand, and more appealing. What is your vision and mission? We see a future where people no longer need access to a traditional garden. Our mission is to create innovative solutions for non traditional gardening spaces to allow anyone to grow their own food. What are the benefits of running it from Raglan? Raglan has a cool start-up culture where people are willing to help you out, give you feedback, and enjoy learning about what you are doing. Our product is ceramic and all we needed to do was go have a chat with West Coast Stoneware and they helped us make some of our first products. When we needed some photography, Honey Studios sorted us out. We’ve been able to build a great network of friends who we can ask serious questions and get really beneficial feedback from. It’s been a great place to start a business. Have you always had green fingers and an interest in plants? Jayden and I both come from agricultural backgrounds so we have been around plants our whole lives. Funny enough though, we haven’t always had green thumbs. This is what makes our product so cool, because if we can learn and grow plants using our product, anyone can.

What have been some of the challenges setting up the business? We could probably write a book on this one question. Everyone loves locally made, but it’s incredibly hard to get products made locally at a price where people will actually buy them, so sourcing our products was difficult. Also, neither of us are marketing whizzes, so this has been a huge challenge that we are currently trying our best to improve. What do you enjoy most about this process?

Starting a business is challenging and requires a lot of learning and these would be the two things that make it fun for us. But I’d also say meeting people who are stoked about what you are doing and supporting other people along the way as well. How do people find out more and get in touch? You can head to our website, jayd.co.nz or follow us on social media @jayd_nz. Feel free to send us a message with any questions or comments, we’d love to hear from you. Happy growing!

s it any wonder that in January 2024, females are a leading part of socioeconomic growth in New Zealand? Always ahead of the curve, the Raglan startup and business space is brimming with women business founders and entrepreneurs. Women entrepreneurs play significant roles in their local communities: increasing family incomes, creating employment and providing value added products and services to New Zealand and the world. New Zealand is among one of the leading countries in the world when it comes to female-owned businesses, with statistics suggesting that 32% of businesses are owned by women. Add to that, the New Zealand startup space offers strong supporting conditions for female entrepreneurs to thrive. This is not to say that while there may be strong enabling conditions, that women entrepreneurs are immune to cultural bias. On average it is suggested that four out of 10 female business founders frequently encounter gender bias, or some other form of discrimination. Successful female entrepreneurships include: zero-waste beauty brands, tech such as digital classroom and healthcare apps, cloud based professional platforms such as mortgage lending, virtual assistants, digital onboarding and HR services. In New Zealand we have unique organisations dedicated to providing female startups with support such as: incubation mentorships, access to investor networks and professional legal and financial services. In 2010, the founder of Gina Jansen Lawyers also founded a 100% female business networking group called Passion for Business. Passion for Business has an upcoming event in Raglan, providing local Raglan women business owners with support and an opportunity to network in a safe, judgement free zone. Along with fun events like fashion shows, regular guest speakers include: bankers, real estate agents, legal professionals. So plug in. The most important thing is to get started. RSVP your interest. ince when have you been back? Denise still enjoys hearing this after 4 years back!

Making her mark with her black and white style since 2009 in Raglan, Denise left 2017 for almost 3 years to explore the shores of the west coast of Canada. Last year she opened a gallery and studio in the heart of Raglan again her third one so far. This time with a long term lease which allows her to invite her friend’s creations into her space like Lecourtois Couture, Sarah Marshall, Jenji Pottery, Silk Alchemy, PIP PINS and many more. Her more recent works popping up in Raglan are the mural ‘Let’s Grow Together’ sponsored by Keep New Zealand Beautiful - which happens to be the outer wall of her Gallery now - and of course the dream project: the artwork for Raglan Chocolate. Her current work embraces her education in Industrial Design combined with her love for drawing, always with the goal to create as environmentally friendly as possible. Denise mainly focuses on commission work in her studio at the back of her gallery from commercial illustrations to private original artworks. Denise loves the diversity her clients expose her with their projects and how it enhances her own art making. Denise thrives on challenges! Denise & Friends 20 Bow St

love the stories of how people meet their lovers, fall in love (or not fall in love!) and how different couples hook-up prior to this melting pot of school-playground connection.

Many parents struggle with identity change, firstly in the wilderness of physiological change in pregnancy, followed by practical changes in our life-style, this means that maintaining our adult friendships gets tested when we raise our kids. Just before Christmas last year Jess’s husband Jair asked if I could collect their son from school for a few days while he was away, as Jess would be teaching dance and they could see a calendar crisis ahead. “Of course,” I said, “Where are you off to?” (knowing that they are both still connected to the national and international performance world). “Oh, I will be in Wellington, I am a flying Elf next week”. At this point I was sure that I needed to make better efforts maintaining these adult friendships. Who wouldn’t want to be friends with a flying elf?! Before long I found out how Jess and Jair met, and I couldn’t keep it to myself. I proudly present: a local love story, the foundation of the dream-teamsuper-couple that make up our local Dance and Circus company Freedom 2 Fly. Q: Tell me about when you first met? What was life like then?

introduced (round of names and nationality sort of thing) it was a “Uuuuuuuuu!” from everyone else when I said ‘Jessica is an easy name to remember’. Q: Tell me about what you thought when you saw this person? Was there a spark, or a mutual appreciation, or another emotion like anger? Passion? Intrigue? ... Throw some words at me! Jess: We were being introduced to our teams his cirque team and our dancing team and I said my name.. he said, “Oh that's an easy name to remember,” and everyone went, “OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH,” and I went bright red and was like.. what just happened? haha.. We were actually wing men for our roommates who were wanting to tap each other. Their thing went nowhere and we ended up together forever. Jair: The feeling was more like a challenge - Was she too pretty? Out of my league. So, what happened next? Well, she became a more and more interesting girl, she started to learn Spanish, she can dance (especially salsa), she is a super funny and fun person to be around. Within a couple of months, I thought she was the whole package! Q: So, what happened next?

Q: And how about your families, what would or what do they say about you? Jess: I think my family ADORE HIM! He is fun, helpful, easy to talk to and gets on with everyone. Jair: My family has always thought I married a princess :) They love Jessica and they find her Spanish super cute, on the other hand, as soon as Jessica's dad found out she was dating a Colombian, he said, "Colombia is not a place to raise children" and now they have me every Christmas at the table :) They are super lovely and supportive in-laws. What are the big dreams ahead? Tell me about those... Jess: We want to build a purpose built studio theatre for Raglan, we want a place that serves as a studio that can host multiple classes at the same time, Dance, Circus, Aerials, Performances etc. that outlives us and serves our community into the future! The thought of building something that could inspire future generations to be awesome, creative and inspirational is very exciting and everything we have set our minds on until now has happened. This one is a huge, terrifying, but a possible goal!

Jair: Too many big dreams ahead, to get a purpose Jess: We almost broke up forever when we got off the contract and went our separate ways. I was like.. build studio for F2F, keep performing internationally DAMN I LIKE HIM ALOT.. that was a sad goodbye. I with our own produced shows, buy a house in Raglan, products at the time she was selling her crystal necklaces was offered a world cruise contract as dance captain see our kids growing in a such a good environment to at IHub and decided to fill it. Jess: When we first met I was a dancer on a cruise ship, living the dream, haha.. I was traveling the world, doing what I love and getting paid for it, I couldn't have felt happier! Then I saw Jay and his team performing and practicing and I was like.. WOW.. NEXT LEVEL, I wanna do what they do! Also Jay was like this gorgeous tiny Tarzan with his long curly hair, flicking it around as he literally flew around the stage on the top deck and doing handstands as we sailed under the Sydney Harbour bridge. It was next level kinda stuff that blew my mind. I wasn't sold on him being for me, but he grew on me. I realised I actually really liked him one day when a member of his team fell during a show. My roommate and I ran upstairs (it was the first show we hadn’t watched) and we heard an alarm to get the medical team to the top deck, I was horrified Jay had hurt himself so we ran up in our pjs and saw him helping his team mate be wheeled off Now with more time on her hands as her family grows, friend "If I don't get married with this girl I won't ever to the medical centre. It was pretty bad, but it wasn't be married”, it was a way to say she is ‘perfecta’.Anastasia indulges in her creative pursuits, finding solace in Jay and that's when I realised I actually had feelings herthe garden and walks with her dog. rtist Hayley Hamilton studied at Central St Martins School Of Art in London. She immigrated to New Zealand in 1993 and has been a full time artist since 2001. Her career to date has involved running an open studio workshop, using clay, painting and a little commercial illustration. She is now painting full time. Her practice involves original paintings from which she produces a range of limited edition prints. Digital art printed onto canvas and exhibition ceramic work. She has exhibited throughout NewZealand. Hayley’s new work is a juxtaposition of images, disjointed elements that ultimately blend together to create a painting, the idea being to portray snapshots of ordinary days, such as it is to be human. Ordinary days stacking up throughout our life to become an extraordinary existence. You can find her open studio at 58 Wallis street, above Raglan Joinery, between the Monster Company and Rivet.

DE A F DEFYING CUNNING STUNTS AT THE H A M ILTON A RTS FESTIVA L WITH PENNI BOUSFIELD

P

enni Bousfield aka Penni Feather was a full time singer in Auckland and Queenstown throughout her 20s and 30s. Penni is hearing impaired with about 2025% hearing - a bit more than that with a hearing aid. We caught up with Penni to hear about her solos show (accompanied by Nicky Keys on piano) coming up at the end of February in Hamilton. Can you describe your Hamilton Arts Festival Toi Ora Ki Kirikiriroa 2024 show and what people can expect? The tagline for the show is "A cabaret performed by a nearly deaf singer - what could possibly go wrong?" which is a bit tongue-in-cheek - although with severe hearing loss there are some challenges to putting on a stage show! The show is in the classic cabaret/one-woman show format, which is a good excuse to sing a bunch of great songs. There'll be some contemporary cabaret standards by the likes of Kurt Weill, Leonard Cohen, and David Bowie, along with some perhaps more unexpected jazz and rock songs. In true cabaret style there'll also be a mix of humour and theatrics as well. The promo mentions it's a show about 'big changes.' Talk us through what this means and how your music expresses that.

The show's a bit autobiographical. I'd had a gradual and moderate hearing loss for many years, then a few years ago on top of that I had sudden total hearing loss in one ear. So now I have about 25% or less of normal hearing overall. It was a big change. The songs express various emotions you can have, in response to loss in general I think, and adjusting to a 'new normal' - so there will be things there that most people can relate to and if not - they are fabulous songs to just enjoy for their own sake. Were you a performing singer prior to experiencing hearing loss? How did this affect your ability to perform and your work opportunities? Has it influenced the direction of your art? I was a fulltime professional singer in bands in Auckland and then Queenstown through my 20s and 30s. Rehearsing and performing is more difficult now, but still doable. Having been a singer most of my adult life means I have muscle memory and technique to call on, plus I have a hearing aid. Another big help is a certain amount of volume - singing on stage is great because you have foldback too. Prior to the sudden hearing loss I'd been a touring musician, performing arts lecturer and theatre director, so it felt like a catastrophe for me. Having that degree of hearing loss definitely affected work. I can only work part-time now. It also affected my notion of myself, which was very much about being a performer and teacher, and of course hearing loss has

a big impact on social situations. Whether it's work or social life now I have to strategise around where/ how I can hear and also make sure I have plenty of downtime between things for my brain to reboot. Mental fatigue and headaches from hearing loss are real - your brain has to work overtime to make sense of what you're hearing and try to fill in the gaps. All that sounds like a fun basis for a show doesn't it! You are performing with Nicky Keys. Why does this collaboration work so well? Nicky is playing piano for me, which frees me up to just sing. I've always loved singing with an accompanist for that reason, and now guitar in particular can be something I struggle to hear unless I play plugged in or with my chin on the instrument (like Beethoven and his piano!). Having an accompanist means I can move around and get up some nonsense on stage and make the whole thing more theatrical. Nicky is about as sight-impaired as I am with hearing, so we understand that each of us needs some concessions for a sensory disability. He's a great musician. Also we hit it off with a shared sense of humour - we're in fits of laughter a lot at our rehearsals, so I reckon we're going to have fun on stage.
