truggling to fight back the tears Lee Marchioni tells her graduate student Danielle “I’m super proud of you, like mother proud” Danielle tells the camera “If it wasn’t for Lee I wouldn’t be where I am.” Lee, a Raglan local, is Leader of Curriculum at He Puaawai, Fraser High School’s Teen parent unit. High School Mums, A two-part documentary on TVNZ1, follows Lee and the young women who she supports daily. Lee Marchioni is a role model. Being a teen mum herself back in the day, she knows just what the girls are going through and how to encourage them with their studies as well as how to teach them important life skills. She loves her job and is in no doubt highly respected by her girls. “We are not about supporting teen pregnancy, it’s about supporting those it happened to,” Lee says.

I like the autonomy I have as a leader. If I see an issue and a way to deal with it, I can implement it straight away, rather than wait for another person or group to discuss it, approve it, or not, and then get back to me. This means I can provide support for students when they actually need it, not 6 weeks or 6 months down the track. Oh, I also like the cute babies I get to cuddle!! What are some of the changes that you have been able to make while in the position? Creating more of a dynamic modern learning environment. Adding more office space so students can meet with youth coaches, counsellors etc in a private space. Building a more collaborative relationship with our Creche and updating our kitchen so it is more of teaching space than a kitchen. What are the biggest challenges that your Mums face when trying to pursue study and parenting?

I started day relieving at Raglan Area School in 2002, then got a full-time job at Fraser High in 2003. Teaching was always something that I had in the back of my mind. I have always enjoyed working with children and youth and it was also a career that I could build around being a mum.

Juggling parenting and study at any age is hard, but as a teenager you are dealing with all your developmental changes too. Sleep deprivation is a very real day to day issue, trying to deal with all of life’s pressures on little or broken sleep, then trying to concentrate on a science assessment that is due can be super hard. During lockdown it was even harder, trying to study with a baby or toddler at home with you is not easy, so we focused more on staying connected and how to have fun and survive as a parent in Lockdown!

When did you start running the teen parent unit He Puaawai and what position were you in prior to this?

How did you find the lockdown experience? Were you able to work effectively online? What will you take from it?

I started running He Puaawai in 2014, prior to this I was Head of Faculty Social Sciences at Fairfield College.

Lockdown was hard. My own children having grown up and left home, we were in three different bubbles, only being able to call or facetime each other. But they were very resilient so I was super proud!

Jacqui from the Chronicle caught up with Lee to chat about her position, the experience of filming the doco and the recent pandemic. When did your teaching career begin and what lead you into this career pathway.

How did you find the experience of having the documentary filmed at the unit? At the beginning I found it really hard having a camera crew in our space, but because they filmed us over 18 months we got to know the crew really well and it ended up feeling like they were part of the He Puaawai Whanau. The girls were awesome at working with the crew from the start, letting them into their homes and their lives, but the crew were super respectful! I can tell you really enjoy your job Lee. What about it do you like the most?

Working from home was actually not too bad once I set up a space in the house to use for an office. The hardest thing was not having face to face time with both students and staff. Conversations are just not the same online. Since lockdown, we have had a lot more focus on wellbeing at He Puaawai, rebuilding and reconnecting as a team and slowing things down so that we are focusing on quality not quantity! eath is not an easy subject to talk about but increasingly people are wanting to take control of their final send off. Whaingaroa Coffin Club founders Gail McJorrow and Deb King hope to provide a space for good conversations about death and dying while custom-making coffins at a fraction of the cost. “Although the savings are significant, you cannot put a price on the therapeutic healing and cathartic act of making a casket that sustains you going forward in your grieving process,” Gail says. One of the biggest ticket items at a funeral, a coffin costs anywhere from $2000 to $10,000; a big expense for something that ends up in ashes or covered in dirt. For around $350, coffin club members get to make and decorate a coffin that reflects who they are in life. “One gentleman at the Katikati Coffin Club made his to resemble a snooker table and his wife even crocheted the pockets. Another lady painted a dreamcatcher on her coffin lid and the family loves it so much they have asked to keep it after the funeral,” Gail says.

6 | Raglan Chronicle Magazine Issue July 2020

Natural burials are on the rise in New Zealand appealing to people wanting to have minimal impact on the environment in death. And Deb, who works at Xtreme Zero Waste’s Wood Yard, reckons Raglan is the ideal place for a coffin club. “The whole DIY, doing things on a shoestring and thinking environmentally is so Raglan,” she says. The pair say the coffin club opens up discussion on dying and planning a funeral that is often seen as taboo. At the time of death and without a funeral plan from the deceased, families are too busy grieving to make informed choice about how they want their loved one to be buried. Gail and Deb want to generate lots of lively, heartfelt conversations about funeral plans. From what you might wear, will you be embalmed to will you have a funeral director, a hearse and will you be at home, are all topics that find a safe space at the club. Gail, a home funeral guide and publisher of funeral guide Better Send Off, says coffin clubs are far from morbid, drawing people

from all ages to chat about life and death. “No-one likes to mention the D word, but if you accept that we are all going to die by proxy you live well,” Gail says. Anyone can join coffin club and making your own coffin is not a membership requirement, Gail and Deb hope family members might see this as an opportunity to honour their elderly family member with a personalised coffin. No building skill is required at the start as the members will work on a ply template that is pre-cut ready for assembling. Coffin Club was first established in Rotorua in 2010 by former palliative care nurse Katie Williams. There are now around a dozen coffin clubs in both the North and South Island and more starting up overseas, including Australia and the United States. The first Whaingaroa Coffin Club meeting is at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre on Monday, July 13 at 1pm and the first coffin making session at Xtreme Zero Waste’s Wood Yard on Friday, July 24 at 1pm. aglan artist Simon Te Wheoro has been selected to respond creatively to alarming signs of racism, and spark crucial conversations about unity. Creative Waikato, backed by the Waikato Community Funders Group, has instigated a campaign called ‘Kotahitanga through Creativity’ which asks artists from the region to create commissioned works across a variety of artforms. Carved from the marble from demolished parliament buildings, Simon has been working on his piece entitled Ministry of Justice from his studio Toi Hauāuru. Takaka marble is the only quarried marble in New Zealand and 5000 tonnes of it was used to build Parliament. For Simon, the marble is significant as it ties the artwork to the Government

Representing a tear drop, the piece pays homage to his ancestors who were victims of colonisation and policies that systematically confiscated land, denied Māori the vote, the right to speak their native tongue and even their art practices through the Tōhunga Suppression Act 1907.

An important value in te ao Māori, kotahitanga represents the importance of lifting each other up.

“The oppression and ongoing affects of colonisation continue to impact Māori even today. I can be Taika Waititi winning a Hollywood Oscar and be claimed as a New Zealander, however, if I steal a loaf of bread because I’m hungry I’m now labelled as a Māori and find myself wondering who gets to determine which ethnic side of me did the crime? Was it my Māori heritage or my English and Irish heritage?” Simon hope his sculpture will make people engage with the topic of

“We weren’t born racist, there are policies and attitudes that keep racism alive.” Creative Waikato CEO Jeremy Mayall believes recent events across the globe have further demonstrated the urgency for action. “We’re speaking up against racism through the most powerful language we know – art,” says Mayall. The project was launched as a response to isolated incidents of racism being experienced around the region in the wake of COVID-19. ou may well remember Jesse Turner serving you at Rockit Kitchen. Jesse lived in Raglan a few years ago and made it home, purchasing a charming character cottage on Government road. During that time Jesse made some deep and profound connections with Raglan women and to this day keeps in regular contact with them.

Jesse currently lives on Mallorca, one of the four islands that make up the Balearic Islands, in Spain, with her husband James and daughter Maeve. option. So, it was just Maeve, myself and Arlo the dog during lockdown.

Children were not allowed outside the property they lived in, and the only travel allowed was for food, medical or essential work.

Straight away, huge fines were being issued for anyone breaking the law. €500 for having a child with you on the street, €1000 for being out walking with your dog – the authorities clamped down hard. It was very straightforward and the clarity was a benefit. Mallorca did not have anywhere near the infection numbers that Madrid and mainland Spain had, but due to everything being centralised, we were running with the same regulations that were in place within the entire country. It was sobering to see the figures coming out of Madrid, which I believe encouraged people to take heed of what the Government were saying.

The airport and ports were shut.

Can you describe lockdown experience?

My sister and her family live close by and I don’t think I would have got through with my sanity intact, without our relationship. We did manage a couple of covert missions for sleepovers, which helped us all and was great for the kids. By the time they could have freedom of movement, children had spent about 56 days at home, so any respite was healthy!

We woke up at home on Saturday 16th March to the news the Spanish Government were issuing a 15 day State of Alarm and that the police and army forces were under direct control of the Central Government. It was a bit of a dash to stock the house up with food and other essential items. Schools were closed immediately; all beaches, parks, public places, restaurants and bars were closed.

We are very fortunate in that we live in the country with a large garden. It was a constant reminder and reality check, when things felt overwhelming, to remember that there were so many people living in apartments with no access to outside at all.

together. Once Maeve was sleeping and the nights were still, it was so lovely to hear the singing and clapping that echoed through the towns. A feeling of unity amongst all, from our own bubbles. What helped you get through? I structured my days with lots of cooking, on-line exercise classes and activities with Maeve. The solo time and lack of adult contact could get lonely, but I connected with close friends around the world. I am so unbelievably fortunate to belong to the most incredible group of Raglan women, and our friendship helped me through more than I can say. We have a book club which we continued by Zoom – the wine and coffee and book chat was lifesaving. NZ was in lockdown during April/May and we have 4 birthdays amongst my Raglan friends during that time. As we

couldn’t have parties and share gifts, it was decided that we would do group virtual video gifts for each person. There was a different theme for each woman, and it was an epic thing to be a part of. I’m sure I can speak for all of us when I say that time will be remembered with joy. Those women know who they are, and I want to shout from the rooftops how fabulous they all are; how they gave me the most beautiful feeling of belonging, from half a world away.

Those images will be a part of the memories of a very strange, unique moment in our history. I’ve framed them and they’re hanging in Maeve’s room.

For me it was really about slowing down and appreciating the small things.

With international air travel still unpredictable, it is unsure when we’ll be home to Raglan. But we’re hoping to make it back to our beautiful corner of the world sometime soon. We miss everything and everyone that makes it so special.

Every day Maeve, Arlo and I would walk the small lane off our house. We walked the same route every day, but I made it a mission to find something special every time. We would find flowers, leaves, feathers, snail shells – whatever was on our path. I’d come home, arrange the days find and photograph it.

What is the situation like now? Things in Mallorca have pretty much returned to normal now; the island has just opened up to tourists again. James finally made it home at the very end of May, so we’re a family unit again. Will you be returning to Raglan?

Taking joy in the small, simple things is something I hope we will continue to nurture, as we move forward into a world that is the same, yet indescribably changed.

rom a national longboard champ to championing the health of others … it’s been quite a ride for Raglan’s Belinda Goodwin, who was honoured this month with a Parkinson’s Volunteer Award for her “unstinting commitment” to Nia dance classes in the Waikato. Belinda – who runs six classes a week, two of them at the Raglan town hall – was chuffed to be recognised by the charity that supports those living with the neurological condition affecting movement and coordination. “Waikato has a real star in Belinda Goodwin,” said Parkinson’s New Zealand. “Quite simply, succinctly and with absolute certainty, she improves the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s and their significant others.” The charity made special mention in its citation of Belinda’s “natural enthusiasm” and efforts to make her Nia classes more widely accessible over the peak of the Covid-19 crisis. The 47 year old – who delivered a gutsy ninth

placing in her division at the inaugural ISA World Longboard Championship in Peru back in 2013 – realised on going into lockdown that she needed to be able to Zoom her classes. In particular she wanted to share what she calls her “freedom dance” for those with Parkinson’s, and her Move to Heal sessions for seniors. “These people felt really isolated,” Belinda says, and were thrilled when she set up the latest in video communications, Zooming directly from her Sunshine Rise living room to theirs. All they needed was a large-screen TV or laptop, she explains, then they could click on the email link she sent for each class and participate as usual. “I made it super-easy (to access).” Thanks to the technology a number of her Nia regulars got to maintain the social connection that comes from a dance class without ever leaving their home. Through Zoom Belinda’s also been able to welcome more converts to her Nia dance classes. These hybrid sessions combining in-person and online classes create a real buzz, enthuses Belinda, who loves the sense of wellbeing participants obviously get out of the ongoing social interaction. Nia – which stands for Neuromuscular Integrative Action – is becoming an accepted form of therapy worldwide for the likes of Parkinson’s, she says, because it encourages left/right brain “coherency”. Rhythm and music trigger muscle memory in our bodies that ultimately overrides the

part of the brain responsible for fine motor skills, she adds. Belinda, who’s taught Nia for four years and is now a certified blue belt, says she realised early on there was a “really strong” market for seniors generally. After first training in dance for Parkinson’s in Wellington, she went on last year to a Parkinson’s dance workshop for instructors in New York at her own expense so she could – as mentioned in her volunteer award citation – “bring those learnings back to the community”. Belinda was also recognised by Parkinson’s New Zealand for entering ‘Team Femidables’ and competing in the 2019 Tinman Triathlon which raised funds for the disorder. Such is her passion for the cause she also organised a few off-beat occasions of her own, including a teddy bears’ picnic during lockdown. People went to a lot of trouble to make it fun, she reckons, including one Nia fan who Zoomed a teddy in via the flying fox he’d set up in his back yard. After the success of online Nia she’s also instigated weekly Thursday night Bingo via Zoom for those who are elderly or on their own but may not be into dance moves. She made Bingo cards online but instead of using numbers “sneakily” devised dance terminology such as ‘squish walk’, ‘outward block’ and ‘chacha-cha’ to play. “It’s so much fun,” she laughs. *Join Belinda in the town hall for Classic Nia at 9.30am and Move to Heal Nia at 11.30am on Wednesdays during school terms.

PLENTY OF PLANTS Put down the packets and pick up the plants! Eating with the seasons provides the mind and body with the nutrients needed to maintain resilience. For example, during the winter months nature provides us with vitamin C and antioxidant rich fruit & vegetables such as kiwifruit, mandarin, and capsicums. Focus foods around warmth and grounding, including plenty of herbs and spices such as ginger, cayenne, turmeric, cinnamon, pepper, and cumin. These help to promote circulation and blood flow, which can slow in winter.

SLEEP Be guided by the darker nights to switch off and wind down earlier in the evening. As you rise, make your bed and expose your eyes to natural light. Sleep is undeniably crucial to health and healing, a time in which some of our deepest repair takes place. Thus, cultivating a little routine here goes a long way towards building resilience and staying well. MOVE Keep moving! e were incredibly pleased to hand over the first stage of the Rangitahi sections to their new owners last week. It is the biggest milestone to date and we are very proud of our efforts to get the project to where it is today. We can’t wait to see the sections be developed with homes and gardens over the next two years. There have been challenges along the way with our project, and we have learned a lot, which we will take into the future of our project. Ticking off stage one is a huge accomplishment for our family business, though we couldn’t have done it alone! We sincerely thank those that have contributed their expertise to the project or supported us along the way, including local iwi, the Waikato District Council and the regional council. We have also had some very hard working local guys Andrew Dyer and Brendan Carroll who deserve a special mention (from Harrison Grierson), they lived and breathed the project alongside us! There were many others within the community as well who we so appreciate for their endless support! And last but not least, a massive thank you to the stage one buyers who believed in our project and wanted to be part of the Rangitahi community right from the start, they bought sections in 2017 and patiently waited for the works to be completed. We couldn’t have started this project without you! “We have created a subdivision with views from all sections and a range of sizes to meet different budgets, with links to open spaces, harbour edges and walkways around the peninsula.” David Peacocke, the man on a mission, started working on this project

14 years ago, when he dreamed up the idea of creating a beautiful place for people to live here on the peninsula when it was merely a farm. He wanted others to enjoy the unique lifestyle that Raglan has to offer, one that celebrates a lifestyle close to nature. And so it began, with the idea to build the Rangitahi bridge to replace the old causeway and allow better access to the peninsula, the Rangitahi Project was born. The biggest challenge to date David says was getting consent to build the bridge, so the completion of that alone has been a major milestone for the project. Since starting the project, over 10,000 native plants have been planted on the Peninsula annually. These natives come from a local seed source, grown locally by Dylan and Reuben Brown at Whale bay with the goal to help restore biodiversity in the area, and provide a sanctuary and home for many native birds on the cat-free peninsula. What does the future hold for Rangitahi? Stage two of the project is now complete, with titles due to be released in the next 6 weeks. The goal long-term is to develop a total of 550 sections across the farm, whilst still maintaining the natural form of the land. Rangitahi is an extension of the Raglan community, a place where you can build a home for yourself and for future generations with great respect for the land and sea. We can’t wait to see the homes become established over the coming years, and future stages that will provide more options for people to build their dream home. We look forward to welcoming you to Rangitahi whether just for a visit or to check out the sections as we are now officially open!

Great companies are made by great people who work to achieve great things.

We live and breathe the local area…

L J HOOK ER R AGL A N It may seem like a little thing but it’s vitally important how we approach business – LJ Hooker Raglan is locally owned.

And we believe that’s important because it means that no matter where you are, when you deal with LJ Hooker you’re dealing with a team that has a deep understanding of the area with a ‘local’s’ knowledge of what’s important to the community.

At LJ Hooker, we believe we are a great company. Sure, we pride

ourselves on being driven to achieve success, but we’re also a company of genuine, committed people who know that success is a two-way street. Unlike some in our field, LJ Hooker doesn’t measure success merely by sales figures, we believe in relationships, in mutual benefit

and in making your real estate experience, unforgettably positive. In signing off, all our team wish you the best ever Raglan summer. Cheers Greig

Graham Rope – Graham June has been a standout for you and Teresa – tell us about multi offers and your adventures in Hamilton?

Greig Metcalfe

Well every sale I have worked on lately has been an offer with more than one offering party (Multi offer) some with 3, 4, or 5. As you can imagine this has resulted in owners getting great sales results. I have been listing in Hamilton and this has been very successful – Raglan vendors or those that have purchased here have enjoyed the ability to work with the same salesperson that they trust. I have another listing coming on in Dinsdale as we speak.

Principal Officer

“The rapid arrival of Covid in February/ March together with the panic like escalations of levels, left us all shell shocked – particularly the few days between 3 & 4.” “Property sales froze, only one sale in all of Raglan in April this completed by Chrissy Coxs and Stephen O’Bryne from LJH. Once May freed up Real Estate, nine sales were done in the area although only two of these were homes in the township.”

Comments from some of our team:

PB

Kyle Leuthart – Kyle you have had a number of sales | Raglan Summer Holiday Guide and fresh listing – what has been a standout for you?

“June has seen a very busy market, at the time of writing only LJH sales are available, we have sold a range of homes and lifestyle properties together with sections. These range from the $300,000 mark through to $1.7 ish.” “June will be far and away our biggest sales month for 2020, lots of happy buyers and sellers.”

I was rapped to help an overseas Kiwi couple successfully buy a premium coastal home – they wanted to secure a special piece of Raglan property when they return to our great little community. Beyond that Matt Sweetman and I sold another Nau Mai industrial park commercial site – we have four fresh sites on the market ranging from 2000m2 to 8000m2 for industrial land.

Rental Update – Tash Metcalfe Black – Tash what’s happening with rentals? We had a flurry after we came out of lockdown and could show the few rental properties we had and yes some of those came out of AIRBNB type situations going to long term rentals. We have some great people waiting so if anyone has a home and could help those people please give me a call.

The business focus now is to stay safe, look after or client’s friends and neighbours. In closing I commend the Chronicle Jacqui and her team for this new format I am sure it is a bold move forward. Greig Metcalfe – Principle LJH Raglan

et’s start this Plastic Free July adventure with mapping out our area. What do we already have around to help us go Plastic Free?

Sign up to Plastic Free July challenge: www.plasticfreejuly.org @plasticfreeraglan.nz #ReusableRaglan @plasticfreejuly #PlasticFreeJuly

Firstly, the watering hole? Ask any child, they’ll tell you where the drink fountains are around town! Why do we stop when we grow up? Many cafés here are registered with RefillNZ and they’re happy to refill reusable bottles with water. Imagine if our town didn’t sell single use water bottles, do you think we could all survive?

Thinking of reusables: The Raglan community is pretty generous when sharing our old things with others. So head to the local opshops for jars, containers and fabric to sew bags or wash cloths.

✖Lions Op Shop, Wallis St ✖ Raglan Community House, Bow St ✖ Kahu’s Nest, Te Hutiwai Rd More sharing and caring: Our town library has just brought in an awesome new selection of Plastic Free living books for us all to enjoy. There’s something for kids, teens and adults. While libraries are places to borrow books and bring them back… There’s also Uglimug libraries dotted around town in most of our partnering cafés. This means we never ever have to use a single use takeaway cup; for coffee, soup or icecream! Just borrow a mug, have a laugh at the art, sip it slow, wash and return it the next day. PLASTIC FREE HOT SPOT: The Herbal Dispensary is one of the first to partner with Plastic Free Raglan. In store there’s bulk bins of kai and cleaners that we can refill our containers at, a jar library for smoothies, loose herbal teas that are blended onsite, and loads of reusables for sale: Water bottles, tiffins, cloth bags, metal straws and beeswax wraps. This is an excellent one stop shop for Plastic Free July tools. See you out there! + share your journey with us @plasticfreeraglan.nz #ReusableRaglan
