CELEBRATING THE PAST WITH PIZAZZ AT ZINNIA

Raglan’s very own treasure trove Zinnia is a tribute to owner Marie Nicholls’ love for vintage and retro.

With long-time manager Jo Sweeney and secondin-charge Charlie Irvin holding fort at the store, Marie is doing what she loves best – sourcing the antiques and collectibles that make Zinnia a destination for shoppers looking for something unique.

Marie’s exquisite taste and keen eye for what’s hot or what’s going to be hot in the market, means she is often ahead of the current vintage trends.

“I started buying vintage as soon as I had my own money,” she says.

Born and bred in Napier, there was definitely the influence from the town’s art deco vibe.

But it was a blue and white Willow jug belonging to her grandfather that first set Marie off on her collectible journey.

“When my grandfather died, I got the jug and I added to the ‘blue and white’ for a while.”

Included in her personal collections are the classic trio of flying ducks and the Crown Lynn swan vases, both of which have increased in value since Marie first set her eye on them.

In the last few years, Marie has been influenced by French ceramics and kitchenware, and a favourite is Majolica pottery.

Evoking a French country kitchen, Majolica is tinglazed earthenware that has grown in popularity and value among collectors.

Her newfound love for French antiquities has taken her on several buying trips to France.

The buying trips are organised by Romantique in Auckland, and Marie joins several other retailers sharing the costs of a shipping container.

“They drive us around all the markets and shops and recycling centres. Anywhere we might find something old and interesting.”

This last trip is already unpacked and adorning the shelves in Zinnia, and Marie is particularly enamoured with the French Aquarium lamps.

“I came upon a collection of them and hadn't seen them before. It took me a while to get my eye and mind around. ‘Gosh, do I like them? Or don't I?’ But I decided I really do like them,” she laughs.

“I’m always looking for things that are quirky and different. They aquariums are from the ‘60s, originally from Vallauris in the South of France where Picasso did his ceramics.”

Zinnia first started life in Hamilton in 2008 and in 2009 the Raglan shop opened; Marie had spent 10 years doing the markets around Auckland and the Waikato before she opted for a ‘bricks and mortar’ shop.

She had already ventured into Raglan with a vintage corner in a shop run by Keith Savage and Lisa

Kerrisk called Right Up My Alley before opening her own shop.

By that time, Marie and her husband were already splitting their lives between Hamilton and Raglan having bought a bach in 1998.

Nowadays, Marie only has the Raglan shop and regular customers will travel to Raglan from Hamilton and beyond to shop at Zinnia.

It’s not only the vintage products that draw the shoppers to Zinnia; books, cards and other gifts are also popular sellers.

With her buying trips taking her out of the country and away from Zinnia, Marie knows the shop is nothing without the amazing staff.

“The staff are really important to me. Jo and Charlie are long-time Raglan residents and they are so good at what they do. I am very lucky to have such a great team.”

Always on the hunt for unusual treasures, Marie is back to France on another buying trip in September.

“I'd like to find more retro stuff from the ‘60s. And the other thing that sells well from France is the religious iconography.”

With Marie always on the hunt for the unusual, you can be certain of one thing when you visit Zinnia; there will be something new and interesting around every corner.

NEW & LOCAL

BROUGHT TO YOU BY BIZWORX

The Local Rag hears from Fabi Henderson, owner of Raglan Botanicals and Anya Silver Jewellery, about her path in business and her recent business developments.

What is the back story that lead you to where you are now?

After 15 years working in a jewellery shop in Sao Paulo, Brazil I embarked on a journey and started travelling.

I came to NZ about 20 years ago but only to later relocate to New York City for a brief period of two years, dedicating myself to further studies of diamond expertise at GIA and work in a jewellery shop in a diamond district in Manhattan.

Upon returning to New Zealand to establish a family, marrying a Kiwi from Raglan, I found myself pondering the next chapter. Driven by my passion for essential oils, I undertook an Aromatherapy course to assist others with managing stress and nurturing emotional well-being. Recognising the profound connection between scent and memory, I became a certified Aromatherapist, founding Raglan Botanicals Aromatherapy to provide guidance and safe usage of Essential Oils formulating Therapeutic Products and Natural Skincare.

Yet, my journey didn't end there. Four years later, I felt a longing for my roots in jewellery, prompting me to rekindle that aspect of my career. Anya Silver Jewellery was born, where I applied the wealth of knowledge of natural gemstones in quality 925 sterling silver jewellery.

Patience and persistence. Expansion takes time and success may not happen overnight. Stay patient, stay focused, and remain committed to your longterm vision for the business.

Having two businesses and two product lines must take a lot of time and energy.

Yes, lots of dedication involved but it's really fun, especially when I can use my background knowledge.

What is a key aspect of business advice that you have learned and would be happy to share?

OBJECTS WE LOVE

Emma grew up here in Raglan and says, “My childhood was not exactly mainstream; my family were vegetarian, my parents grew most of what we ate on our property. Mum used herbs and homeopathy to treat any ailments, and Dad surfed, which meant many hours were spent waiting for him in the car out at Manu Bay. I’m not sure I can put into words my love for this place, It’s where my heart feels full and my feet feel firmly planted into the whenua. Every street carries memories of times past”. Emma’s early food memories are of, “being in the garden with my parents and eating freshly picked strawberries,

MOTHER’S DAY is on Sunday 12 May...

Her culinary journey began at Molasses cafe, where she transformed from a kitchen hand into a cook. This experience ignited a passion that led her to train professionally as a chef. Becoming a Mum and having children with food allergies became a turning point in her cooking style, ‘My Darling Lemon Thyme’, sprouted as a haven for gluten-free, vegetarian recipes, organic gardening tips, and real food stories. Her mission: to empower people to cook wholefood meals from scratch, as vibrant and delicious as they are beautiful. This dedication to food and food security extends beyond the web. Flourishing gardens and an orchard provide for most of her family’s fresh produce needs, reflecting a lifelong commitment to growing food and inspiring others to do the same. When asked what makes our food scene special Emma thinks it is, “the deep connection that people have to the land, with so many people now growing their own food to nourish not only their families, but their own wairua as well”. When asked if Emma had advice for families on a budget, she shares, “Cook from scratch, eat seasonally; produce that’s cheap and plentiful is usually what’s in season. Grow your own food, even if it’s just a few pots of herbs you have growing on your doorstep. This will add flavour and nutrients to your food at a fraction of the cost of store bought items.

ThisTALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

A LOCAL LOVE STORY

WITH RUBY GIBBS - CREATOR OF THE MENTAL HEALTH TOOLBOX

month I sat down with Wanda Barker, an artist and retired social worker and therapist. Wanda creates in Little Hill Studios, an artist collaborative on Hills Road. We sat out in the sun at her place and talked about mental health, acceptance and facing the gifts of darkness.

When you’ve been at your lowest ebb what has kept you going?

Ilove the stories of how people meet their lovers, fall in love (or not fall in love!) and how different couples hook-up prior to this melting pot of school-playground connection.

Many parents struggle with identity change, firstly in the wilderness of physiological change in pregnancy, followed by practical changes in our life-style, this means that maintaining our adult friendships gets tested when we raise our kids.

What is your relationship like with your mental health and is it something you consider every day?

Just before Christmas last year Jess’s husband Jair asked if I could collect their son from school for a few days while he was away, as Jess would be teaching dance and they could see a calendar crisis ahead.

It's pretty good now because I've had 72 years of practice! Do I think about it every day? No. Mostly I'm busy doing things that nourish my general health. It's not that crises don't happen or things don't impact me but I know where I need to go with it now. If I’m feeling a bit up and down then maybe I need to do something physical or have a day in the garden. I should paint something or write a poem. I just do the stuff that makes me feel good. My artistic expression is a huge part of it, and it has been that way all my life. I'm one of those people that, if I was starting out now, would get a diagnosis - Asperger’s or somewhere on the spectrum or ADHD - but that wasn't available. So I did other things. My father would always say, “You're so restless.” My response was, “No, I'm curious.”

“Of course,” I said, “Where are you off to?” (knowing that they are both still connected to the national and international performance world).

“Oh, I will be in Wellington, I am a flying Elf next week”. At this point I was sure that I needed to make better efforts maintaining these adult friendships. Who wouldn’t want to be friends with a flying elf?!

Before long I found out how Jess and Jair met, and I couldn’t keep it to myself. I proudly present: a local love story, the foundation of the dream-teamsuper-couple that make up our local Dance and Circus company Freedom 2 Fly.

Just knowing that this too shall pass. I may be thinking this but I am not my thought. I try to just accept this for what it is right now. If I can change what I can change, that's fine. If I can't change it, I have to accept it or I have to let go of it. I think, what is my role in this? Do I need to have an opinion? I try to interrogate myself. Just pulling right back and thinking, hold on, this is impacting me, why? Does it need to? What someone thinks about me is none of my business, it's all about them. Remember that! Also don't be afraid to let people go. Even people that may have been really close to you and dearly loved, you let them go. I used to be the first one running out with the band aid whenever there was a wound. I have learned over the years that I don't always have to be that person. In fact, I'm too old and too tired to be that person now. I used to go into things quite naively and I would get burned. But now I'm not so readily available. Having a really strong sense of my boundaries is what gets me through. I'm aware of what I can give and what I need to step back from.

Q: Tell me about when you first met? What was life like then?

What was your relationship like with your mental health when you were younger?

I was a wild teenager! My poor parents! I was a curious mix of quite introverted but I had an extroverted persona. I was often put in leadership roles that I would never volunteer for. The teachers saw something in me but I never felt like I was that person. I muddled my way through my 20s, like everybody. I had a really good cohort of friends and a loving family. I must have driven my parents mad though, because I wasn't an ordinary older daughter. I was responsible but not really containable. I just did my own thing. A lot of my energy was pushed into sports because there was no other alternative. And then my whole career; social work and therapy, it's the empathy gene. At the end of work, the vessel was empty. I was empty. So, a very important part of my career training was self care and how you manage your energy levels when you are giving out so much.

introduced (round of names and nationality sort of thing) it was a “Uuuuuuuuu!” from everyone else when I said ‘Jessica is an easy name to remember’.

Q: Tell me about what you thought when you saw this person? Was there a spark, or a mutual appreciation, or another emotion like anger? Passion? Intrigue? ... Throw some words at me!

Jess: We were being introduced to our teams his cirque team and our dancing team and I said my name.. he said, “Oh that's an easy name to remember,” and everyone went, “OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH,” and I went bright red and was like.. what just happened? haha.. We were actually wing men for our roommates who were wanting to tap each other. Their thing went nowhere and we ended up together forever.

Jair: The feeling was more like a challenge - Was she too pretty? Out of my league. So, what happened next? Well, she became a more and more interesting girl, she started to learn Spanish, she can dance (especially salsa), she is a super funny and fun person to be around. Within a couple of months, I thought she was the whole package!

Q: So, what happened next?

What are some of the lessons that you've learned over your life?

Jess: When we first met I was a dancer on a cruise ship, living the dream, haha.. I was traveling the world, doing what I love and getting paid for it, I couldn't have felt happier! Then I saw Jay and his team performing and practicing and I was like.. WOW.. NEXT LEVEL, I wanna do what they do! Also Jay was like this gorgeous tiny Tarzan with his long curly hair, flicking it around as he literally flew around the stage on the top deck and doing handstands as we sailed under the Sydney Harbour bridge. It was next level kinda stuff that blew my mind. I wasn't sold on him being for me, but he grew on me. I realised I actually really liked him one day when a member of his team fell during a show. My roommate and I ran upstairs (it was the first show we hadn’t watched) and we heard an alarm to get the medical team to the top deck, I was horrified Jay had hurt himself so we ran up in our pjs and saw him helping his team mate be wheeled off to the medical centre. It was pretty bad, but it wasn't Jay and that's when I realised I actually had feelings for this COLOMBIAN CIRCUS DUDE haha. I didn't want him to go home.

Jair: We met in Singapore Nov 2009 on a cruise ship. It was super funny the fact we couldn't understand each other and had to use a mutual English friend to translate (she didn't speak any Spanish by the way). I was part of a 6 acrobats troupe, and Jess was part of the resident dancers cast, when we were officially

Humour! Laughter is medicine. I made a painting recently and it says, “It’s a great day, not stabbing anyone right now”. This life is precious and it's temporary. My thoughts may be really dominating at this moment but tomorrow they won't be. There'll be another whole set of things to be concerned about. Sitting in that space of knowing that nothing is fixed. It is all transient. And being able to laugh in the face of the darkness. I’m a shadow dweller. A constant theme in my life and art is bringing that stuff into the light and exploring it. That's my curiosity. Because if you don't, it haunts you from behind. Expose the so-called negative emotions to yourself. Don't be afraid of your anger, your jealousy, your bitterness. Just explore them for what they are. Often they are telling you something. Jealousy is telling you very clearly what you want and what is missing from your life. Bitterness is telling you what you've given up and perhaps shouldn’t have. Mary Oliver, the poet, calls them the gifts of darkness. They are amazing things but we have relegated them to the shadows. Bring them out! Take a real good look at that stuff and then lay it to rest. A lot of my artwork includes broken china

Jess: We almost broke up forever when we got off the contract and went our separate ways. I was like.. DAMN I LIKE HIM ALOT.. that was a sad goodbye. I was offered a world cruise contract as dance captain and also a contract on the same ship as him but around the pacific (which I had already done 4 times) and not as dance captain. I asked him what he thought I should do.. he said.. “I don't know” ( I just wanted him to come with me. He didn't, so I took the world cruise to spite him. Then we were both sad and he said, “What, Why did you choose that?” I said, “’Cos you didn’t say you wanted me to come on the cruise with you”, and he said, “But I do,”

Q: And how about your families, what would or what do they say about you?

Jess: I think my family ADORE HIM! He is fun, helpful, easy to talk to and gets on with everyone.

Jair: My family has always thought I married a princess :) They love Jessica and they find her Spanish super cute, on the other hand, as soon as Jessica's dad found out she was dating a Colombian, he said, "Colombia is not a place to raise children" and now they have me every Christmas at the table :) They are super lovely and supportive in-laws.

What are the big dreams ahead? Tell me about those.

Jess: We want to build a purpose built studio theatre for Raglan, we want a place that serves as a studio that can host multiple classes at the same time, Dance, Circus, Aerials, Performances etc. that outlives us and serves our community into the future! The thought of building something that could inspire future generations to be awesome, creative and inspirational is very exciting and everything we have set our minds on until now has happened. This one is a huge, terrifying, but a possible goal!

Jair: Too many big dreams ahead, to get a purpose build studio for F2F, keep performing internationally with our own produced shows, buy a house in Raglan, see our kids growing in a such a good environment to name a few. We feel super happy and privileged to live in a supportive community like Raglan, we started to feel like locals now (after 6 years living here) and the feeling of belonging to this town and this country, make us wake up every morning and feel blessed and inspired to keep doing our best and enjoying every single step of it.

or things I've smashed in the sink. Often they were treasures or wedding gifts, but I was really wild and I just smashed them. And then I had regret and remorse. I've got to deal with this, no one else told me to smash that thing. I did it. So what do I do with it now? I try to make it beautiful again and I put it in a painting.

It just so happened the director of recruiting managed to fix it so I ended up not taking the world cruise and was on the next contract with him. This was one of those ‘meant to be moments’ that magically brought us together. I ended up meeting his family after our first contract. That was wild. I didn't speak much Spanish, had bright red hair and he didn't' live in the safest of places.

Jair: After one year we were together I told my best friend "If I don't get married with this girl I won't ever be married”, it was a way to say she is ‘perfecta’.

It's the perfect example of facing the darkness. I was going to ask you how your artistic practice informs your mental health but clearly it is so intertwined that it is not even a separate thought.

Q: And did you think this person was going to be the person you started a family with?

Jess: I didn't, but now I can't imagine life without him!

Jair: Our life is the one I always dreamed of, having your soul mate by your side everyday is the best thing that can happen to a human being, you can even laugh in tough moments of life.

have to fix them. In fact we can't fix them and that is ok.

What are the tools in your toolbox?

No, it's not. A lot of my art is emotionally expressive. I think when you're not afraid of yourself, you're not afraid of others. If you're not afraid of your own anger then you can sit with someone else's fury. But if you're afraid of your own sadness or grief, how do you sit with someone else’s? You can't. You're suppressing them. You don't

Thanks so much to Jess and Jair for sharing their love story with us. On behalf of many of us in the community I want to say a big thank you to them!! Their energy, passion and exceptional skill brings an experience for us (kids and adults) that would be hard to match anywhere in the world.

This may sound a little etheric, but patience. Patience with self and patience with others. Knowing that there are some things I can’t fix. In terms of my personal practices; yoga, pilates, walking, gardening. Often I can have something that I think is a problem then I walk it off. That’s very cheap! Another interesting thing I have in my toolbox is determination. I am a really disciplined person and people would probably be surprised to know that. But I have quite a routine. I get up in the morning and make a cup of tea, I do half an hour of stretching or exercise, I go off to my pilates class then I'll go for a walk. I will sit at the computer and write a poem every day. I’ll be down in the studio for a couple of hours every day. I am very disciplined in making sure I am getting what I need.

WHĀINGAROA YOUTHWORK COLLECTIVE NGĀ WHAKARURUHAU MĀHURI

INTERVIEW

This page is exclusively dedicated to the youth of Whāingaroa. Each month, you will discover interviews, events, and other valuable information tailored for local rangatahi to foster connections and actively participate in our community.

For this edition of the Whāingaroa Youthwork Collective - Ngā Whakaruruhau Māhuri Rangatahi Page, Matua Joe chats to Luna De La Cruz.

How's life?

Life’s quietening down a bit for me because we are going into winter. So just focusing more on school and work and trying to write new music at the moment as well!

Great, let's get to the music a bit later but tell me about work. Where do you work?

I work at Wyld Cafe; it's good, they pay me well which is really good and the staff are lovely, everyone's really kind.

Tell me about growing up in Whaingaroa?

Life growing up in Whaingaroa is something that I am super grateful for already and I haven't even left. I feel like I will always remember that and it's really like formed me as a person having the community and all the influences of people around me, the arts, music

scene so I think Whaingaroa has made me a lot of who I am because I probably wouldn't have been exposed to that in other places. I love the ocean and I think the conservation culture is something I appreciate!

Tell me a bit about your education because I feel like you have had a really rich education experience.

I attended Matapihi kindergarten and then when it was around time to go to school my parents and a few like minded people thought to make a homeschooling group, so that happened for quite a few years with just going around people's houses and the parents taking turns teaching us playing to their strengths. At some point we had tutors and we have developed a pretty close connection with every one of those teachers we've had. We were offered very awesome learning; they all have different strengths and it was a very project-based way of learning.

I think it is very cool because everybody got to explore the same topic but in ways that suited their style of learning and their brain. We are just given the free rein to explore our passions.

I have seen you perform at the Old School at WTF etc and you are so talented, so tell us about your journey and your new album.

I have loved music all my life. I have a really musical family. Mum and dad always had lots of music playing, lots of reggae, spanish flamenco, and lots of Rage Against the Machine.

When I was 9ish a teacher said you can sing really well so I started learning guitar. I played my first gig at 12 at a busking comp, and then I started writing originals and performing. One of the times I performed with this guy Nikau Te Huki and we talked afterwards and he was like I would love to produce a song together.

And so we ended up setting up a recording studio in my house and recorded a song I wrote on holiday in the South Island and we recorded and produced a song in 9 hours.

We released the song on my 16th birthday and it got to 4,500 streams in under a month which I was super stoked about. The name of the song is called ‘God Knows Where’ and it’s on Spotify and apple music.

What’s the song about?

I wrote it on a rainy day and it was a very emotional moment; some of the

WITH WH Ā INGAROA YOUTHWORKER COLLECTIVE

lyrics I had written years before and it's really long. It was really healing to write for me. I was able to work through it with art and music and then putting it out there and having people message me and say hey I'm listening to this and its really helping me out and I'm having a really hard day. That's the goal. I think it’s beautiful to turn my experiences into something that can help other people, and that's the ultimate goal.

What advice would you give to a young person?

I think with there being much more social media - there is a real pressure to grow up really fast and I think try to appreciate being young and being free and all the things you can do with your life and don't feel you have to fit into the moulds you have been shown all the time. Make the most of Raglan’s nature and beauty. Focus on what makes you happy not on what other people think you should do or what is cool to do. Hold on to your morals and who you are.

Is there any one you want to shout out to?

Brian and Naomi who have given me so many opportunities like playing at Sound Splash and the Yard, Tukana who has been my mentor and my big sister! And my mum and dad for being great parents!

SURF SERIES

BROUGHT TO YOU BY RAGLAN SURF CO

ANNUAL HURLEY BOARDRIDERS TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WHANGAMATA

THE LOCAL RAG SURFING SERIES COVER SURFING NEWS IN RAGLAN.

The annual Hurley Boardriders Teams Championships was held on April 13th to 14th in Whangamata in great waves.

This event is a teams event where each boardriders club in the country puts in a team of 5 surfers. Each team consists of one Junior surfer, one Woman surfer, one Over 40 surfer and two Open surfers.

Raglan Pointboardriders team included Theo Morse (Junior), Alani Morse (Women), Larry Fisher (Over 40) and Caleb Cutmore (Open) and Luke Hughes (Open).

The format is an individual competition for each division and then a tag team event. Points are added up and the winning club wins $1500 plus an all expenses paid trip to the Gold Coast to compete in the Usher Cup World Club Championships. Raglan Pointboardriders were victorious in 2022 and buzzed out on the Gold Coast experience so they, like every team, wanted badly to win the prestigious prize again.

It was great having our club president Luke Hughes in the team. He was unlucky in the Open men’s not getting through his first heat in a real tight one that could have gone either way. Alani Morse was in the same boat. She put a great performance in her first heat leading the whole way until the last two minutes. She caught the first wave of the set only to pull off the back and see the two surfers in second and third both get the best waves of the heat to knock her back into third and eliminated. Our other 3 surfers all managed to make the finals of their division. Caleb Cutmore getting 2nd in the Open men’s, and both Theo Morse and Larry Fisher finishing 3rd in their finals.

Coming into day 2 we were sitting just behind Keyhole Boardriders from Piha and Bayboardriders from Mount Maunganui. So now it was all about the tag team event and we had to win it to get enough points for the win.

The tag team is what makes this event fun and unpredictable. Each team chooses the order of their surfers and has 50 minutes to get a good score each and get back to the beach in time in order not to get a 5 point penalty deduction. It’s a beach start where you have sprint down the sand and paddle out. Surfers can catch as many waves as they want however your highest scoring wave counts. Basically you have 10 minutes each and after the paddle out you may only have 4-5 minutes to catch

a wave before you start eating into the time of the next surfer. It’s a pressure cooker format where mistakes can unravel the best of teams easily. Each team would need to progress through two rounds of this format to make the final four teams. Raglan Point Boardriders won their first and second round making it to the final. Keyhole Boardriders who were looking favourites to win by dominating the individual divisions self destructed in their semi final with a couple of their surfers taking up too much time which didn’t give their last two surfers enough time to find quality waves.

The Raglan Pointboardriders team. THIS CONTENT WAS MADE POSSIBLE THANKS TO SPONSORSHIP FROM RAGLAN SURF CO.

In the final the swell had increased considerably making the paddle outs very difficult with the limited time. Our team put in a valiant effort and tried their hearts out but could not get the big scores to take the win and finished 3rd in the final and 3rd overall. BayBoardriders took the tag team win and the overall points to book their place into the World Boardriders Championships to be held in January 2025 at the Gold Coast. Our team was disappointed not to take the win but we were pretty content with our effort and solid performance. The team vibe and support was great to be part of.

TOP TALENT COMING TOGETHER FOR WRITING WORKSHOPS

FROM RAGLAN OLD SCHOOL ARTS CENTRE

Aspiring and experienced writers have the chance to spend a few days learning and working with some of the best in the business.

Planned for the three days of King’s Birthday Weekend on 1-3 June, Come Together – being held at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre – features a series of workshops and presentations from award-winning authors, poets and publishers which aim to encourage others with their writing, whether it’s poetry, fiction, non-fiction or fantasy.

Saturday morning, award-winning poet, writer and senior lecturer in creative writing, Siobhan Harvey, presents “Character Traits”, a workshop which will have participants thinking deeply about character and learning different ways to bring them to life on the page.

In the afternoon, writer/publisher Ann Neville and Tina Shaw – editor of the Bateman New Zealand Writer’s Handbook – will discuss the publishing process, along with the differences between independent and mainstream publishing, before two hours dedicated to writing in “The Writing Room”. This will be followed by drinks and nibbles with workshop attendees and presenters, and a short film.

Sunday morning, Ann and Tina work through the process of preparing your submission for publication, including manuscript assessment, outlines, query letters, elevator pitch, hook, submission guidelines and synopses.

At 11am, award-winning writer Tracey Slaughter hosts “Exploding Photograph: A workshop in ekphrastic flash”, where participants will focus on producing flash work inspired by an image, generating vivid and atmospheric lines using the sensory cues seen in a photograph.

After lunch, at 2pm, Ben Brown (Ngāti Mahuta, Ngāti Koroki, Ngāti Paoa) presents “No te hā ki te maramatanga –

Whakapapa of Story: From essence to understanding”, which promises to be a personal reflection on the origin and place of story and its importance as a foundation stone of our own humanity.

More time is set aside for writing on Sunday afternoon, or – weather depending – an afternoon kayaking on the Raglan Harbour (for an additional cost), before wine and nibbles at The Wharf Restaurant from 6pm, where participants are encouraged to share their work.

King’s Birthday Monday offers “The Writing Room” again from 9.30am-1pm.

The workshops have a limit of 25 participants, so book early!

The costs for each day (except Monday) is $80 for one day, or $140 for both days, with concessions available ($60/day or $120/weekend) for members of the Raglan Community Arts Council.

SCULPTOR’S WORK TAKING OFF

Zane MacDonald’s side hustle is attracting plenty of attention and helping him achieve his ultimate goal of taking to the skies.

KZane, from Waitetuna, works as a welder four days a week and spends the other three days creating stunning sculptures from an assortment of old tools, car parts, machinery and other random pieces of metal.

“And then I made my first big sculpture probably two years ago now and a lady in Waipu Cove bought it, and she's already commissioned two more, within the past year or so. It’s all hit me at once. Unexpectedly, but it's good, I like to grow.”

ia ora tātou, and thank you to everyone who has read this column in 2023.

Sometimes a piece of metal might look like a leg, or other times ideas just come to him.

taking five minutes to go and put your feet in the water to shake you out of a mood.

It was only meant to be a way to earn a few extra dollars to contribute to his big goal of obtaining his helicopter licence.

“I started this side hustle thing like three years ago, but now it's kind of gone in a different direction,” he says.

Aside from the financial benefits, it’s also enabled him to rekindle his love of art.

In my second year of doing this series, I have felt even more connected to our community and the people willing to share themselves with me and you. I feel grateful that I get to have conversations about the hard parts of life and to pass on the stories and wisdom that is handed to me. I know right now it feels hard to be a human. I have been feeling incredibly helpless. My empathy bucket feels like it is being drained faster than ever. But what keeps me going is knowing that we are all just trying to get through our days on this little speck of dust that we live on. If we can do that with kindness, honesty and community, then I think we will be okay. I don’t have all the answers but what I am trying to do for myself right now is take it back to basics. This summer, as we get busier and the population of our little village swells, I am taking it slow, putting my feet in the water, nourishing my body and my relationships, and making time for myself.

“I've kind of been into art since I was a young kid but I kind of lost it during college. Then I found a career in welding so I kind of just started making little stuff, little pieces of art and sold them,” he says.

“My mind works quite differently to a lot of people. It's all visualised, 3D inside and stuff, but my ideas just pop up and then I just go with whatever really. I like the challenge but I put my heart and soul into it.”

And while his side hustle has turned out better than anticipated, Zane says it’s all part of his plan.

Another theme running through the interviews was to tackle your baggage head on, to sit with those uncomfortable feelings. It is not easy to honestly reflect with yourself. Sometimes we are so blind to our own patterns and habits that to sit down and deeply consider the way they impact our lives is really scary! Bevan passed on a mantra from his therapist; “first truth, then peace.” I think this is relatable to everyone’s life. As Bevan said; he is the best he’s ever been because he’s done the work.

There were so many gems in this years’ interviews. A mantra that I have taken on as my own came from Ange; “ease and grace and push on through.’ Jo says to remember that the tide goes in and the tide goes out. Kaleb is trying to be softer, more open minded, more patient. Nicole reminded us that paradox is our friend and not everything has to be black and white. Bevan spoke of healthy selfishness and how to look after yourself first.

“My main goal in life is to become a helicopter pilot, so this is just another step that I'm creating for myself to get to that dream. Like, I know life's a journey, not the destination, but the helicopter is the end goal that I'm trying to achieve, but I have to take steps to get there and starting the side hustle thing was a step.”

Reading back over the interviews from the past year, I was struck by everyone’s priority of these basic needs. Taking the time out of our lives everyday to create some routine and balance, whether it be making your bed in the morning, as Mike does, or creating your own weekly diary to keep an eye on your life, as Nicole explained, can have a big impact on your mental health. The Whare Tapa Whā that Johnny spoke of is an easy way to categorize these basic needs. Are we looking after our wairua (spirit), hinengaro (mind), tinana (body) and whānau (family/social)? Check in with these needs every day. It could be as simple as

A quote that I heard in a podcast recently has stuck with me; “You can’t think your way into acting differently but you can act your way into thinking differently.” A lot of the interviews I did this year spoke about going through difficult periods in life but finding the way through the darkness. This can start by taking things one day at a time and changing the way we act. Johnny said he likes to get up and get amongst it. Nicole told us how she learned to change the story, you just have to reframe it. It may feel like faking it at first but acting your way into thinking differently can lead to new, healthier behaviours.

Earlier this month I attended the Hīkoi for Hauora which was organised by Raglan Naturally and Raglan Area School. We walked around the three bridges then came together at the school for a performance by Rob Mokaraka. Rob’s story about his suicide attempt and journey afterwards was eyeopening, vulnerable, funny, tragic and inspiring but what stayed with me was hearing members of our community speak up at the wānanga that followed. People spoke about their own battles and I was touched by the truths they shared and the tears they cried. These conversations can change the way we view our struggles and how we move through them. I feel grateful to be a part of a community that is prioritising this kōrero and doing it with so

Lastly, I am deeply grateful to Jo Sweeney, Mike Edmonds, Nicole Hancock, Kaleb Kingi, Ange Hardy, Bevan Lockwood and Johnny Rickard for speaking with me. Your vulnerability, time and courage is appreciated. It isn’t easy to share your thoughts in this public forum but I know each one of you spoke to me in the hopes that sharing your journey would, in turn, help someone else. I hope this column is opening up conversations with yourself and the people around you. I hope it can act as a reminder that we all go through hard periods in our lives, but it is how we consciously move through those periods with kindness, grace and resilience that matters.

That’s all from me this year! Enjoy the summer, look after yourselves and I’ll be back with more interviews in 2024.

RISING STAR FROM RAGLAN SET TO SHINE AT MISS VINTAGE AUSTRALASIA

Jo Tweedie, a rising star in the vibrant 1950s pin up scene, is poised to take the stage representing New Zealand this month at the prestigious Miss Vintage Australasia pageant in Australia.

With childhood roots in Raglan, Jo’s journey into the 1950s-inspired world of vintage pin up pageants began with memories of her dad crafting elaborate floats for Raglan’s New Year’s parade and a passion for fashion.

“Because I was born on New Year’s Day, my Dad used to make a big float every year,” says Jo, now 25, who has vivid memories of parading through the streets of Raglan on a big pink castle for her fifth birthday and inside a huge purple shoe when she turned six.

“We won almost every year because the floats were incredible,” recalls Jo.

For her seventh birthday, Jo was gifted a sewing machine and – with dreams of Paris catwalks and 1950s fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn – she’s been channelling her own creativity into crafting fabulous costumes ever since.

When she was just nine, Jo had her first taste of success as a 1950s pageant queen when she created her own costume inspired by Sandra Dee from the movie Grease as part of a rock and roll festival – and won!

“I had the tight leather pants and a white shirt and matching hair and neck tie, which I made myself,” she says. “I always wanted to be a fashion designer and then I put my little outfit together myself. I was so proud! Because I was quite an introverted, shy child, it made me feel very brave being on stage and getting recognition.”

Over the past year, Jo has been making waves in the pin-up community under her stage name Stella Moon, taking part in events like the Whangamata Beach Hop and Miss Deluxe in Auckland. Her incredible talent has not gone unnoticed as she continues to rack up accolades, including winning Miss Southern Belle in Christchurch for her Halloweeninspired outfits in October, the Best Dressed Gal at the Power Cruise Pop Up Photo Pageant in Paeroa, 2023, and the face of Frankton Thunder in Hamilton in March 2024.

“I guess I’ve caught the bug and I’ve been doing pageants ever since,” says Jo, now based in Auckland. “I love meeting all of the other pageant goers because the pin up community is really close in New Zealand. Everyone is really kind and encouraging, even though we

are technically competing against each other. I’m not a very competitive person so being able to have a sportsmanship around it all is really important to me. It’s a really lovely, wholesome community.”

Stepping onto an international stage

Now, Jo is gearing up for her biggest challenge yet – heading to Australia next month to represent New Zealand in her first international competition, which will see her competing alongside contestants from Australia, America and Southeast Asia in Miss Vintage Australasia.

“It took a while for it to sink in that I was going to be representing New Zealand against all these incredible worldly pin ups,” she says. “I’m very excited that I’m going to be representing New Zealand talent and the positivity that comes from the pin up community in New Zealand.”

Jo is now busy sourcing lots of different fabrics to make the designs for her costumes come to life. Inspired by the reduce, reuse, recycle ethos that has informed all of her creations since her childhood in Raglan, Jo is committed to making sure all of her costumes are made as sustainably as possible – sourcing as much as she can from op shops and vintage stores.

“I love the idea of using vintage fabric because it has a story, it has a past life,” she says. “It makes it much more special, I think.”

She can’t give too much away about what she’s wearing when she steps onto the stage in Australia, but she can reveal that her first dress for the daywear section will be fashioned from a tablecloth, and the evening dress a pair of curtains!

With sponsors like vintage fashion brand Lana-Rose Fashion and a network of small businesses including Starburst Stone, Splendette, Belbina Lee, Mrs Dodge, Blue belle vintageclothing, PIYIN, catch a thief, erstwilder and Beauty School Drop Outs supporting Miss Vintage Australia event, Jo is ready to shine on the stage in the elegant setting of the historic St Patrick’s Cathedral Hall in Ballarat on 26 May.

So what would it mean to her if she came back to New Zealand with the Miss Vintage Australasia crown this month?

“It would be an incredible opportunity to encourage others to pursue something that makes them happy, whatever that might be,” says Jo. “And also to promote sustainability and conscious consumerism.”

MEET THE TEAM AT THE HERBAL DISPENSARY

In the coming months, the Raglan Herbal Dispensary team aims to connect with you by sharing insights into who we are.

If you need some health advice, get in touch. We’re here for you seven days a week, offering professional naturopathic advice. Drop by, call, or send us an email — we're ready to assist you on your path to wellness.

Milly

Kia Ora, I’m Milly. I’m one of the newest naturopaths of the team. Mid last year I was pulled to move to Raglan specifically for a slower paced life, spending my days in the ocean and reconnecting with the land.

As I began to make the move, my dream position as a naturopath at The Herbal Dispensary was advertised. I had been studying naturopathy for the past 3 years and was feeling the call to integrate my learnings. I feel very grateful to be a part of the wonderful HD team where I am surrounded and supported by other plant medicine wahines.

I’ve been a lover of the outdoors for as long as I can remember; I love spending my spare time out in nature whether that be in the ocean surfing, foraging for herbs or somewhere in the mountains hiking or skiing.

My current areas of interest are gut health, nervous system regulation and female reproductive health. Naturopathy to me is re-learning and strengthening our relationship with Mother Earth, as she has always held the resources to

Natalie

Hi, I’m Natalie, and I’m all about nature, health, and helping people feel their best. It all started two decades ago when I dove into studying naturopathy because I’m passionate about the outdoors and everything related to wellness.

After some time exploring the world and trying different things, I found myself drawn to Raglan, chasing waves and good vibes. That’s where fate stepped in — I spotted an ad in the Chronicle for a naturopath position in the Herbal Dispensary. With a bit of zinc still on my face from surfing, I popped in, had an interview and the rest is history. Working there reignited my love for natural medicine.

Fast forward seven years, and the opportunity came knocking to take over the business. I won’t lie, I was nervous. Running a shop that’s open every day and juggling all the different parts seemed overwhelming. But with my awesome team by my side and our customers’ support, we’ve kept things going strong, continually building on our quality products and service.

maintain the strong foundations of our existence!

I love serving the Raglan community with their natural health needs; I feel there is a special warming energy within the community that feels very uplifting to be amongst. I feel fulfilled when I hear returning customers say that they’ve turned a corner in their health.

I look forward to continuing to serve well into the future.

Finding the right balance between serving customers directly and handling the behind-thescenes tasks can be quite the juggling act. Some days, it feels like I’m wearing multiple hats at once, both at work and in my personal life. But you know what? What truly makes it all worthwhile is hearing from customers whose health has improved because of the advice I've given. That's the real reward for me — knowing that I've made a positive difference in someone's life. Natural medicine and focus on health promoting diets can benefit everyone.

Outside of work, you’ll find me in the ocean catching waves, or doing yoga or pilates, or just hanging out with friends.

Whether you're here for some guidance on your wellness journey or simply want to check out our quality products, know that you're always welcome.

I look forward to seeing instore or online and being part of your wellness adventure.

Jocelyn

Kia ora, Jocelyn here. I moved to Whaingaroa during the second year of studying Medical Herbalism in Hamilton. A part time position was advertised to join The Herbal Dispensary, yet it took me 3 attempts to get a job here. Literally my 30th birthday was my start date! Every time I celebrate my birthday, I’m also celebrating another year of being in the HD family.

Things have changed so much since that first day 18 years ago, yet my favourite aspects still remain and those are serving you and your families. I love watching all the babies grow up, making connections with the foodies, gardeners, health enthusiasts and day-trippers who have supported the business and taught me just as much as I’ve taught them.

I get a huge smile on my dial when my favourite wise-cracking customers come in, especially if it’s been go go go; they bring me back to the moment and we have a giggle together.

Something you might not know about me is that I was a competitive Highland & National

dancer from the age of five until twenty; that’s where my muscly arms come from…teehee

Outside of making up fruit and vege boxes, doing lots of orders and running about, I have been teaching yoga since 2013. It’s my niche where I fully feel I’m being my most calm, present self.

So if you come in store and I’m not smiling, just say namaste and it’ll reappear instantly.

COFFEE ROASTING A GROWING NICHE INDUSTRY ABOUT TOWN

Raglan Roast may be a name on people’s lips around much of the country these days but no fewer than three backyard roasteries are also thriving locally.

And each of the niche labels is proving quite a success story in its own right.

One – Coaster Coffee – is concocted within a Raglan West garage where longtime local Malcolm Hutt has a few large, shiny roasting machines resembling robots from an alien planet vying for space with his not insignificant record collection toward the back of the building.

He sees a symmetry in his twin loves for coffee and music. “Both require timing, groove and vibe,” he insists.

And neither is a new interest for Malcolm, who’s been involved in the coffee industry for nearly 27 years.

In fact he and Raglan Roast’s Tony Bruce together opened Volcom Lane’s ‘hole in the wall’ in early 2000, using beans from Rocket Coffee Roasters in Hamilton where Malcolm – a onetime chef – worked as a barista, brewing up around 200 cups of coffee a day.

“I got good at it,” he told the Local Rag, admitting he received an ‘outstanding barista’ award as voted in 2001 by his peers in hospitality.

With Malcolm’s passion for all things coffee he also learnt how to service the machines, at the same time training baristas and refining his craft.

Now he’s out on his own – a one-man band in an unassuming garage, ordering and roasting beans, bagging and distributing them locally and online while also working as a coffee machine technician around the Waikato. “Coffee is part of the fabric of my life,” he reckons.

Rata Miller is “pretty much” a one-man band too, and passionate about the Miller’s brand of coffee created by his father in Auckland way back in 1987. He roasts from a converted container – in a cafe called the Garden Club – at Nau Mai business park on Raglan’s outskirts.

His wife Alicia helps with the website, social media and distribution of the product. They set their shop up at Nau Mai a few years ago and had “a steady flow of coffee-drinking enthusiasts”, says Rata, but the challenges of Covid saw the business close for a time.

Now it’s open again, with the addition of a 10kg Petroncini hot air roaster imported from Italy which has allowed Rata not only to brew coffee for appreciative customers but also to roast Miller’s espresso blend of beans.

“It’s a small town, not a huge market,” he says of the move to diversify and get his coffee out there – in and beyond Raglan –as quickly as possible while at its best. Coffee is ageing as soon as it’s roasted, Rata explains, so roasting two mornings a week ensures the product is delivered fresh both locally and online.

Customers also get to see – and smell – this process for themselves, which adds another dimension to Rata’s boutique roastery.

Morning Glory Coffee Co, by contrast, has grown from a one-man band to a point where owner Paul Peterson can now proudly say he’s created jobs for six people in the community.

And 50 cents from every kilo bag of coffee sold goes to local conservation group the Karioi Project.

Like Malcolm, Paul began by roasting beans in his garage, but subsequently shifted his operation from Flax Cove to a small shed downtown behind Indi’s Cafe, which also sells the brew.

However, his roasting process outgrew the shed and was moved recently to a basic black barn opposite Te Mata School grounds. Indi’s remains an outlet but Paul also has his distinctive yellow coffee cart in town and at events such as Raglan’s monthly creative market.

Paul says he made a conscious decision early on – after initially working at the busy Te Uku Roast

Office – that he’d be a small boutique coffee roaster producing “100% organic and ethically traded coffee”.

So after travelling to Indonesia and establishing connections with small-scale coffee farmers he now trades directly, visiting their plantations regularly and buying beans by the pallet each time for his specialty roast. It feels good to “represent the little guy”, he reckons.

Says Rata of his fellow aficionados: “There’s a lot of symmetry between the three of us.”

We basically observe the same etiquette in delivering fresh, high quality coffee.

And a thriving coffee culture ultimately stimulates good social interaction within the community, he believes.

NEW ZEALAND JUNIOR SURFING TEAM

READIES FOR WORLD CHAMPS

FROM SURFING NEW ZEALAND

Afresh-faced New Zealand Junior Surfing Team is about to touch down in El Salvador ready to tackle the World Junior Championship this week, the team including eight new faces amongst the country’s twelve top junior surfers.

The New Zealand Junior Surfing Team is competing at the 2024 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship being held in Surf City, El Salvador.

Leading the way for the Kiwis are the 4 groms who are no strangers to ISA Competition. In the Under 18 Boys, it is Spencer Rowson who makes his 3rd straight appearance in as many years, looking to better his 25th place finish from 2023, he looks forward to putting his experience at the infamous la Bocana in to practise. Along side him will be first time team member Taimana Marupo and Tai Murphy, Marupo earning his place on the team as 2024 National champion and Murphy as ratings leader in the 2024 NZ Grom Series, both surfers will look to put on their best displays as they battle the worlds best in front of the biggest audience in junior surfing.

SURFING EXHIBITION AT RAGLAN MUSEUM

In 2013, locals and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the opening of Raglan Museum’s permanent surfing exhibition. Dr Patrick Day, President, welcomed everyone and outlined the development of the idea for the exhibition, and the history of surfing in Raglan.

The surfing exhibition is a reflection of the great significance that surfing has to Raglan, both culturally and economically.

It was made possible by an initial donation of $20,000 from the Gallagher group, allowing for the professional

display of a huge variety of loaned and gifted boards from Raglan’s earliest surfers.

10 years on, the exhibition is receiving a bit of an upgrade, with new labelling and more surfboards to be added.

There is plenty to be seen, with a large collection of surfboards loaned by Bob Comer, one of Raglan’s earliest and most successful surfers, as well as photos, memorabilia and Raglan Point Boardriders history.

A touch screen computer offers video clips, photos and more history.

Visitors can take the weight off and snuggle into a comfy couch to watch the Raglan Surf Explorer DVD on a large-screen TV.

Some of the more unusual items to keep a look out for are:

-one of the oldest wooden boards, made in the 1930s and used at Manu Bay by Jack Poole

-the first-known photo of a surfboard in New Zealand - a wooden board leaning against a vintage car and taken in 1927

-a collection of surfboard wax

-an early surf lifesaving reel used in Raglan

-a very fetching 1950s bikini!

Be sure not to miss a visit to this wonderful exhibition that reflects and celebrates an activity that is so close to the hearts of many Raglan locals, both past and present!

When somebody dies, the paperwork involved in the administration of a loved one’s estate can be daunting for the family, let alone it being a very emotional and upsetting time. At Gina Jansen Lawyers, we are often approached with questions about estate administration so we put together some helpful FAQ’s.

Someone has just died, and I am an Executor in their Will. What do I need to do?

If you have been appointed as an executor in a will, you should always locate the original will, and contact a solicitor straight away as well as notify the deceased’s Bank and Work and Income NZ. The executor’s primary role is to follow the instructions set out in the deceased’s will and ensure that all of the deceased’s assets are identified, all debts repaid, and the balance of the assets (called the residue) is distributed to the beneficiaries in accordance with the will.

Who is responsible for paying the funeral invoice and how does it get paid?

Under a will, the funeral costs invoice is usually payable by the deceased person’s estate. Once the Bank has been advised that the deceased has passed away, they usually freeze the deceased’s bank accounts, other than those jointly held.

WILLS & ESTATES: CHECK OUT THESE FAQS

WITH GINA JANSEN LAWYERS

Banks do allow funeral invoices to be paid direct from the deceased’s account if there are funds in it. If the estate does not have enough funds to pay the funeral costs, then the responsibility to pay falls to the executor(s), or the person

who signs the funeral home’s contract to undertake the funeral. Some people may qualify for a funeral grant from WINZ or ACC. The funeral home will assist the family/executor with paperwork for a funeral grant, but who is liable for

payment of their invoice, and when, should always be clearly discussed at the time of signing up with a funeral home.

Do I have to apply for a Grant of Probate to the High Court?

If there is a will, the executor will need to apply to the High Court for a grant of probate confirming the will and giving the executor authority to deal with the estate’s assets. If there is no will, but there are assets of over $15,000, then someone (usually the next of kin to the deceased) will need to apply to the High Court for a grant of letters of administration under the Administration Act, giving them authority to deal with the estate’s assets. Except where jointly owned, the title to the deceased’s home, and any other property held in their sole name, cannot be transferred to the executor/beneficiaries without first obtaining either a grant of Probate or a grant of letters of administration. If the estate is under $15K, an application may not be required. However, many people nowadays have Kiwisaver savings which can often be worth over $15K and which will require an application to release the deceased’s Kiwisaver funds to the executor for distribution to the beneficiaries. Where there is no will, who inherits and how much is determined by the Administration Act.

WHAT'S ON THIS MAY

MIKE HARDING ‘THE EKETAHUNA KID’

A renowned musical storyteller at ease with his instrument and his audience, Mike Harding’s mission for the last forty years has been to locate and perform the folk and popular songs of New Zealand’s past and present, from our colonial and folk roots to the Kiwi music of today.

‘The Ekatahuna Kid’ tour celebrates the songs and Mike’s own classic Kiwi upbringing. Born 1952 in the Eketahuna Maternity Hospital (later to be an old folks’ home - finally a goat paddock). Growing up in a small-town way: rugby at the domain, swimming in the baths and the river. At high school Gilbert & Sullivan, at home Barry Crump. Friday night shopping trips to Masterton, shearing gangs, possum traps, country roads and country pubs.

Mike has released several albums, has previously won Folk Album of The Year and his recordings have often been played on RNZ National Radio. He compiled ‘When the Pakeha Sings of Home’ for Godwit Press and made several series of programmes for National Radio on New Zealand music.

Best view of the Bridal Veil Falls, hands down. The Newton Homestead was originally positioned in the very best location to capture the very best views of the Waireinga, Bridal Veil Falls and her surrounding reserve and to this day she arguably still retains this honour. Of lesser and more common views this area offers, the Homestead provides generous vistas out towards, Aotea, Kawhia and onwards to Albatross Point as well as the ever changing and somewhat moody Mt Karioi. The homestead was built in an era of practicality when timber was cheap and 'big bones' were the norm, with separate Kitchen/ Dining, a ginormous Lounge and 4 bedrooms.

A bargain - asking less than cost

This rare lifestyle opportunity is immaculately presented and brand new, so new in fact that we are expecting the final Code Compliance Certificate to be issued any day now! The 1.2 hectare (2.9 old fashioned acre) section is gently rolling with sweeping rural views, partly comprising 'the sleeping lady' that is Mt Karioi. With a little fencing there is the opportunity to have your own pony and/or grazing animals or alternatively just continue with the landscaping and develop more gardens. The bright and airy 158m2 home consists of a generous open plan living and kitchen space, 3 bedrooms.

Add value here

This 3-bedroom home on a generous section is well elevated above Lorenzen Bay Road, lies well for the sun and affords a few decent peeks of the harbour. The top level consists of generous open plan living, dining and kitchen, a bedroom, the bathroom, and laundry whilst the lower level has 2 bedrooms and a decent garage which is 9.5m x 3.6m so there is plenty of room for a car, toys and even a rumpus room. The land is well elevated and comes complete with a selection of fruit trees, a beautiful granddaddy Pohutukawa and to top it all off, there is plenty of room for a decent vegetable garden.

5 acre compact farmlet

It is rare to find a compact farmlet with as much on offer as 397 Ruapuke Road. For starters, the modern 2-bedroom home lies well for the morning sun and is tucked away from the prevailing westerly wind. The home is warm with double-glazed joinery throughout, a wood burner is on-hand to heat the spacious open plan Lounge, Dining and Kitchen quickly and the rest of the home with ease. The home is in tip top condition with plenty of internal storage, a separate laundry and 2 toilets. All of this comes complete with a garage/ shed/ workshop that could easily house the boat and other 'stuff'.

WE LOVE SEEING THE JOURNEYS OF OUR RANGITAHI FAMILIES AS THEY DESIGN AND BUILD THEIR DREAM HOMES.

We visited the Boer family to hear all about their home and lifestyle now that they are well and truly settled into their beautiful house with water views, in Stage One of the Rangitahi development: The Village.

Heather and Seb, well done on the completion of your home in Rangitahi. It was a real dream in the making! You have had time to settle into your beautiful new home and we would love to know how it is for you as a family to be living in Rangitahi?

We absolutely love it! Our kids love it and it’s an easy walk/drive to school. We all enjoy exploring the local area and swimming and kayaking at high tide, and doing the walks around Rangitahi. We enjoy the social aspect of catching up with local friends, and it’s safe for the kids to visit their local friends and play all around the neighbourhood!

I work from home, which is great and Seb finds it an easy commute into Hamilton to work daily.

Building projects come with highs and lows... were there aspects which you particularly enjoyed? And what challenges did you face which may influence the way you would build in the future?

We loved the planning stage, and watching the house come together on paper, then starting to take shape in reality. The frustrating elements were probably what most people experience, delays, price increases, supply challenges... it tested our patience for sure! But once you move in you forget all about the challenges.

DIY projects are appealing to lots of New Zealand families. Being a new build, were there any areas which you were able to take on yourselves?

Seb, Campbell and my Dad built our stunning deck! They worked very hard and we are so happy with it, we spend so much time there. We also did lots of painting of retaining walls and baseboards.
