R AGL A N A RTS WEEK END SET TO WOW VISITORS OVER L A BOUR WEEK END

R

aglan is gearing up to be the place to be over Labour Weekend with the highly anticipated Raglan Arts Weekend, now in its 11th year, ready to wow visitors. The 35 registered artists have been hard at work over lockdown and beyond, and many of them will not only be showcasing new artworks, but also new techniques, borne out of a long period of being shut away from many distractions. Take internationally acclaimed artist Sam Mathers, whose lockdown journey has resulted in a collection that’s a marked step away from his signature nautical style. It incorporates layers of new elements and free expression where Sam has “let loose”, as he describes it. Then there’s Jane Galloway and Claudia Grutke, both having completed the Art2life Creative Visionary Program run by Californian artist Nicholas Wilton. Both have been experimenting with mixed media collage, and for Jane – a more abstract style than her familiar detailed realist paintings. “I’m finding that people are keen to get their hands on a lockdown inspired artwork as a physical snapshot of a very difficult time in the world,” says another RAW favourite, Toni Kingstone, who has sold a number of new artworks since RAW’s Easter event was postponed. Her favourite tool has been a palette

knife to create marbled effects and complex colour combinations in her new fluid acrylic and resin work. Nine new artists have joined the trail this year, and visitors will also be spoilt for choice with a diverse and engaging range of media including stone sculpture, metal work, airbrushing, mosaic art, steel forgery, surfboard carving, ceramics, taxidermy, wood furniture, fine jewellery, digital fine art, painting and photography.

Rick Youmans will be live painting semi abstract watercolour and ink paintings of the Raglan coast, for sale on day of creation

“It’s a self-discovery trail with approximately half of the artist studios accessible by foot within the main township,” says Nicky Brzeska, RAW Co-ordinator. “The remaining studios are mostly in clusters a stone’s throw away so it’s very possible to see the majority of our talent over the 3 days,” she says. Raglan Shuttle will be running a ticketed shuttle from town centre to the Wharf where you can visit Tony Sly, and see Rick Youmans in action with live painting of semi abstract emotive watercolour and ink paintings of the Raglan coast. They will also be running a daily shuttle tour to visit the RAW artist studios, East on Saturday and West on Sunday. Visitors are encouraged to pick up a trail map from the Old School Arts Centre, and check out the ‘Talking about Climate Change’ Preview Exhibition, open week days 10am until 2pm until the end of RAW.

There’s over 130 years of history steeped in the old kauri walls and floors, and there are many who still remember it as their first school. Constructed using local kauri, the one-room school with a porch was built in 1883 and as the roll continuing to grow, three more rooms were added. The school was also used as a temporary hospital during the 191819 influenza epidemic and throughout WW2 it was utilised for home guard parades and an air raid shelter was built by deepening a drain. Although, it hasn’t heard the ring of the school bell since 1962 when students headed up the road to the new school on Norrie St, the community wasn’t about to let it lay idle. After the land and building were vested in the Raglan County Council - Waikato District Council’s predecessor, the building was used for shearing and beauty competitions and as the Raglan County Council depot office and smoko room. Now a thriving arts centre, the Old School was nearly lost to the community when the Raglan County Council looked at demolishing the building after years of neglect saw its native timber beauty deteriorate. It took a campaign led by the first Raglan Community Arts Council (RCAC) chair Glen Young and local kuia and activist Tuaiwa ‘Eva’ Rickard to secure Historic Places Act legal protection for the Old School with the help of lawyer Ronald Young. Work started in 1984 to upgrade the Old School for use as an Arts Centre and in

1988 management of the building was given to the Whaingaroa Arts and Works Centre. A collaboration between the Raglan Community Arts Council and the Whaingaroa Work Co-operative began refurbishing and restoring the building. It thrived under the guidance of the then RCAC Chair Marizio Sarzini and arts activities, such as Susan Flight’s Raglan Summer School of Art, blossomed. Work continued on enhancements, including the first internal toilet and a kitchen installed in 1992, a repurposed garage used for community pottery in 2001, the community gallery opened in 2006 and the St Lazarus building with commercial kitchen and art studio was built in 2010. Raglan Community Arts Council chair for close to 15-years, Rodger Gallagher responded to an advert in the Raglan Chronicle asking for new committee members; a year later he was made chair. Describing himself as an appreciator of the arts, he sees the value in the building and in what it adds to the community as an art hub. He’s the driving force behind the endless rounds of funding applications that help keep the arts centre going. There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the Old School, and Rodger points out the efforts to grow the community art centre continues with the help of a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. The recent new build out the back, which started in 2018, has seen the Clay Shed garage replaced by a two-story, multi-functional space; but it hasn’t come easy. Like all builds it has had its ups and downs; the usual building hiccups and budget blow-outs have meant the RCAC continues to seek local government and

philanthropic funding to complete the building. Plus, there’s the neverending fundraising events and initiatives undertaken by staff and volunteers to keep it moving along. “We started with a $100,00 shortfall but pushed ahead anyway,” he says. The build that is for the community has been nurtured along by a variety of community tradies, businesses and an army of volunteers, Rodger says. “We’ve had Dan Thompson laying the concrete, Andreas Broring sourcing material, Jonas Lindfield doing the electrics, Matt Hassard on plumbing and drains, Ross Cameron for the roof, Marty White with his various builders and now we’ve got Phil Crake. They’re all doing their best for the community.” The COVID six-week lockdown made a huge impact on the Old School; income dried up and bills still needed paying. Once again, a team of volunteers kicked in and a Monster Garage Sale raised over $5000 to help the centre recover financially. The Raglan Arts Weekend was the only major arts event run by the Old School that was able to be rescheduled this year, with the Raglan Film Festival and Raglan Art to Wear both postponed till next year due to the pandemic. The movies, music, clay workshops and Raglan Creative Market are all back up-andrunning and Rodger is looking forward to the upstairs room in the new build ready for use by the end of the year. And as for the future of the Old School, Rodger says as it has been in the past it will be up to the community to decide what that might look like. “We will have a planning session next year involving the community.”

A RTS FE ATUR E

A RTIST INTERVIEW WITH MARISE RARERE

How would you describe yourself as an artist and your body of work? I have two passions in my life; my family (especially our moko Ihaka) and my art practice. As an artist I believe in a strong work ethic and I like to be open minded with regards to my ideas, but I admit I am resistant to personally categorising and labelling my work because I find it can be limiting. I have no problem with other people’s need to do it though. I like simplicity, universal forms, vessels, elements from nature, exploring lines and colours, breath, feelings and touch to compose a visual harmony. My art spans a range of mediums, with each influencing and informing another. Usually I will have several strands of work happening at the same time. Some things can take a long time to create, often those works happen early in the morning in quiet repetition. I counter that with pieces that are made quickly, capturing the energy, maybe only a few moments. I enjoy the creative process. In many ways that journey is more important to me than the finished product. I have built up a body of work which covers a time since the mid 1990’s that includes memories of the past, interwoven with new ideas. What is your backstory in terms of choosing the arts? I grew up down south in Invercargill with a very artistic father, who worked at the freezing works. Our mum was supportive of whatever interests we (my sister and brothers) wanted to try. Dad would draw galloping horses on the back of his Best Bets or tell us Māori legends, other stories and draw characters and scenes on pages as he told them. Learning new things and education was encouraged in our house. When I was about 11 years old I went to Saturday morning art classes for several months. I would get dropped off and several hours later I would be collected proudly holding my efforts of the morning painting, stitching, collage, making things from found objects, drawing, screen print, whatever it was. My whānau returned north to Tauranga, and the shift in geography and culture had a big impact on life. Being introduced to our whanaunga, marae opened up a whole new world and perspective. College art didn’t go well for me, I recall getting E’s one year for not handing in any assignments. Years later that art teacher and I would be students together in our Master’s programme. On reflection Shelley was an excellent teacher but unfortunately I was a terrible student at the time. In 1994, I began my formal studies at Waikato Polytechnic now Wintec, Hamilton. I started Fashion Drawing night classes and

then enrolled in a Diploma of Visual Arts and ended up completing a Bachelor of Media Arts. For several years following that I studied the Certificate of Toi Haraheke at Wintec’s Te Tari Maori - studying traditional and contemporary Maori weaving with tutor Rama Kete. I reenrolled multiple times because I loved it so much. I think that ended up costing me more than my degree. A few years down the track I completed a Master of Fine Art.,Painting/Sculpture through RMIT University, Melbourne. During this time I received a scholarship from Arts Waikato. I did a Digital Artist residency at the University of Waikato. Then I stopped exhibiting for 10 years as other life and work commitments became more important. During this period I spent five years between 2013 and 2018 taking regular workshops learning to cast glass, lost wax technique with now Cambridge based artist Di Tocker I think it was in 2016 or 2017 I exhibited again for the first time at The Framing Workshop in Silverdale, run by Sarah Marston who has been framing my work since art school years. Since moving to Whaingaroa I have been a member of the Raglan Art where fellow artists gather regularly. I am working part time in the office at the Raglan Old School Art Centre, and have taken part in the annual Raglan Arts Weekend. Which in turn led to having my work AT Show Off Gallery and Wabi Sabi Studio. Now I am in the process of moving in to a new studio workshop and what feels like the beginning of the next chapter. Where are you based in Raglan? I am very excited about our brand new work space ARTISTS at WORK Studios and Gallery down Electric Avenue (behind Zinnia opposite Raglan Artisan Bread and Raglan Beauty) Is this a shared space? This is a shared space with well-respected Raglan artist Jane Galloway. Jane and I are both looking forward to having generous sized studio spaces to make new works What are you currently focusing on? The Raglan Arts Weekend 24, 25, 26 October is just a few weeks away so busy with preparations for that. Then it is straight into several more projects leading up to Christmas and a busy summer. How does living in Whaingaroa influence your work? Living in Whaingaroa is a dream come true. We love our little whare in the bush near the ocean. The energy of this place and people are infused in every piece of work that I am making, but not necessarily locally specific, but rather universally understood.

ry to peg down exactly how Raglan’s iconic cafe culture evolved and you can quickly find a load or two of the town’s dirty laundry being aired. It’s not that there was any skulduggery involved but rather that the town laundromat – of all things – figured in the early histories of both the first and second true cafes about town: Vinnies, established in 1989, and Tongue & Groove which opened seven years later. The curious involvement of the laundromat came about when Vinnies owner and celebrated chef Colin Chung became so busy he needed the adjoining laundromat gone so he could turn the smaller side area housing the washing machines and dryers into a takeaway outlet for his prized pizzas. Raglan locals – along with just about half of Hamilton it seemed at times – had embraced his cafe established in the historic Onehunga cottage on Wainui Rd. But the takeaway trade, with customers constantly coming and going, was taking up too much space for Colin’s sit-down cafe business where burritos, nachos and buffalo chips were the order of the day. That left an enterprising young couple about town with no place to put their laundromat. So Lisa Graham and partner Adriaan Dekker started looking around for a new site, and came up with the old commercial building on the corner of Wainui Rd and Bow St. It was largely occupied – as AD remembers – by “mowers, cycles and chainsaws”. And while there was plenty of space at the back of the building to locate the laundromat, their dilemma was what to do with the prime piece of real estate at the front. “We decided to do a cafe,” Lisa told the Chronicle recently over a coffee at what is now The Shack but was first the Tongue & Groove – she and AD seated at one of the same formica tables they

had there two decades previously. “No experience and four young children,” Lisa laughed when asked what Tongue & Groove was modelled on. “We needed somewhere to party,” added AD in all seriousness. The pair gutted and transformed the dingy mower and cycle shop into an eclectic retro cafe with a bar, a bold red wall or two and a La San Marco commercial coffee machine. They installed vintage picture theatre chairs – ones that, memorably, flipped up and down – around a surfboard table at a side window, and put AD’s brother’s longboard up on one wall. It’s still there today, along with a few other collectables. The couple would clear the cafe space come Saturday nights to make way for a dance floor with a band set up in a corner, and party on just as AD – a muso with his own band Snow Cone – had envisaged. “It was great,” he remembers. Bands like Trinket (later The Datsuns) and Auckland rockers Shaft/D4 flagged Hamilton to play Raglan instead. Local gigs such as Band Wars and Ten Guitars were a hoot. “The whole floor moved (literally).” It was the mid 1990s and locals were wanting to party at an alternative venue from the pub, AD explains. The hotel’s iconic ‘Mudshark Mondays’ of the 1980s were by then on the way to becoming a hazy memory. Lisa admits cafe life was hectic. She pretty much ran the whole thing including the kitchen where her specialty “bowl food” – like roast pumpkin dahl, curries and roti with chutney and raita – topped the menu. Meantime Vinnies up the road was flourishing, just as it did during Colin’s entire 15 years at the helm. He too had taken on a building which had seen better days and which, he

Familiar territory: AD and Lisa revisit the cafe they opened as Tongue & Groove back in the mid 90s. reflects, took six months of hard work to “turn around”. Although people had thought he was crazy to start up a cafe in this sleepy little west coast town with its not-so-popular black sand, Colin says he was convinced Raglan was ready for change. Trained in hospitality in his native Hawaii – and riding on the success of running Uncle Sam’s restaurant and nightclub in Hamilton in the 80s – he served up everything from chowder to curries, at the same time introducing locals to Mexican burritos and nachos, and his famous buffalo chips made with agria potatoes and served with Mediterraneaninspired aioli. Vinnies’ reputation gradually grew beyond Raglan and the Waikato to the likes of Auckland, Wellington and Gisborne – Colin knew that from the cheques written out over the years – and he was forced to extend his simple kauri cottage, which initially seated only 35 patrons, both out the front and upstairs. He also brought in windows from an old church in Hawaii to give his extended cafe an attractive new frontage, and a kauri staircase from the Regent

Dressed for the occasion: Colin Chung dug out his old Vinnies T-shirt for a photo outside the historic Onehunga cottage - now occupied by Raglan Surf Co - where he started his pioneering cafe in 1989. Hotel in Hamilton to access the upstairs tables. Colin remembers long but lively days and nights in the kitchen. He says the whole family became involved in the business as his and wife Rhonda’s three children went from littlies sleeping out the back on flour bags to teenagers who helped out

after school and during the weekends in the cafe, open seven days a week. While Vinnies and then Tongue & Groove paved the way for the town’s thriving cafe scene of today – about the only options previously were the hotel and a few fish-and-chip shops – there were other memorable early ventures.

he Local Rag sat down with Karla Randrup, one of the coorganisers of the popular event, about their plans for the summer. Fill us in on your plans for evening eats this summer? We are bringing the food trucks back once a month starting Saturday 17 October. We will be at the Raglan Rugby Sports Club again, so families can come along, put a blanket down and enjoy some delicious food. We will have music and face painting for the kids, and we are super excited to announce we will have market money vouchers up for grabs for the people with the reusables picnic set up at the markets. What range of food can we expect to experience? A bit of everything again Hawaiian poke bowls and buddha style bowls, bao buns, thai dishes, seafood, falafel, ice cream and

more. There are always vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options at each market too so everyone can enjoy something. When did you establish the concept and how has it evolved? We started talking about doing something back in June 2019 after going to food truck markets in other towns around NZ and knew that the community here would love it too. We emailed and called trucks persuading them to come to Raglan and it has thankfully paid off. We are super grateful to have been able to utilise the Raglan Rugby Sports Club carpark to grow the markets and the team have been amazing. This year we will continue the koha at the gate with all proceeds going towards supporting their community initiatives. Â How has Covid affected rolling out this event? We continued planning for the next market, whilst keeping a close

eye on the level changes and what this would mean for the markets. If necessary we will be a takeaway only market, take care to ensure social distances measures are in place. Â How do you approach waste and the impact on the grounds? We pride ourselves on being a zero waste market and a plastic free event - Xtreme Zero Waste and Plastic Free Raglan have been amazing teams to work with and supported us with reaching our zero waste goal from the beginning. All vendors must use compostable packaging which we sort through after every market. We also promote and encourage everyone to bring along their own reusables to stop any waste at all. After each market we make sure the grounds are clean and tidy and to keep the field perfect, we keep all trucks in the carpark! raglansummermarkets.co.nz

he Wharf Gallery, specialists in contemporary art, with a particular focus on New Zealand. Located in Raglan, we exhibit a range of artists from the emergent to the established from all over New Zealand. The space is named after its location on the edge of Raglan and within easy walking distance of the town. The Wharf has long been an iconic feature of our seaside village opening in 1921. It is a relaxed and beautiful location. We aim to create vital links between artists and their audiences, and for the gallery to be an integral part of the local community as well as a regional hub. We look forward to shaping the space’s vision as well as creating a warm environment for our visitors. Come in and say hello, we would love to meet you. P Sarah 022 096 7031 W thewharfgallery.com

Spr i ng t i me wel lbei ng w it h t he Herba l Dispensa r y T

he Herbal Dispensary is one of the largest and longeststanding Dispensaries in New Zealand. We are passionate about supporting our community in leading healthy, happy lifestyles. Our approach to health is holistic, offering a wide range of organic produce and pantry foods, alongside individualised nutritional and herbal supplements and services. Our registered Naturopaths and Medical Herbalists are available both in-store and by consultation 7 days a week. Spring Selfcare The lifestyle choices we engage in on a regular basis have such an impact on our overall wellbeing. What we do consistently is what matters when it comes to our health. With Spring comes a sense of renewal; we invite you to take this chance to listen a little more closely to your body. What

might it need a little more or less of? Our top 3 tips are below. Movement If the benefits of exercise were packaged up in a pill, we’d all be taking it! Exercise is one of the fastest and most effective ways to boost mood. Start simple, a fast walk or light jog, Pilates, or yoga class is all it takes! Aim to increase your body temperature and get your heart rate up for at least 10 minutes a day, then build upon this. Restorative Sleep We need sleep just as we need air, food, and water – it is the only time our brain and body is able to deeply ‘spring clean’. Switch your screens off earlier, get into a good wind-down routine, and aim for 8h per night. Gratitude, Mindfulness, and Meditation

Although we may be able to do a number of things in a given moment, we cannot focus intently on more than one. Thus, in a state of gratitude we cannot also be engaging in negative thoughts. Find ways that work for you to adjust your focus to the positive, either through expressing gratitude, journaling, or noticing the beauty around you; the sound of the birds, the sea, or wind. At the Herbal Dispensary we offer a unique range of health & wellbeing products made here in Raglan by our Medical Herbalists, such as herbal teas, tonics, & skincare. Along with the above tips, these can help you to feel as good as you can this Spring! Pop in-store to chat with our team and find out more. abinet have been servicing Raglan for the last 12 years in all aspects of cabinet making, residential and commercial fit outs, kitchens, bathrooms and custom furniture. Wood is such a fantastic versatile resource, I get such a kick out of taking ideas and a lump of timber and turning it into something beautiful that people can use and enjoy for years and years. This year we’ve started a retail end Ministry of Wood, selling furniture and timber products, it’s been great dealing directly with the public, seeing people get excited about our furniture and taking home something they love as much as we do. We’ve also signed up for the Raglan Arts Weekend for the first time this year and will be showing our work in our new showroom in Te Mata at Labour weekend. We even do steam bending and curved work. It’s all possible. We start every project by working with the client collaboratively to develop their ideas. The design process involves discussions, sketching, choosing materials and 3.D. modelling. Manufacturing takes place after the client is completely satisfied. The final product, whether it’s a Kitchen, Vanity, Table or Chair is delivered with pride. Each piece is unique, crafted with care and built to last generations. See our work at.. However cushions have been the new favourites in her collection. Designed for women with an appreciation of colour and style, these compliment any outfit or home and can be dressed up or down in subtle and beautiful ways. The unique touches of Sweeney’s pieces make them an ideal and thoughtful gift. Recurring themes flow through the chosen fabrics and their clasps; butterflies, petals, water, in a pattern of recurring elegance.

i, I am Kristy and I live in the beautiful Te Mata, Raglan countryside with my husband and two children.

Interior Design is an extremely exciting industry with so many amazing ways to transform a space. I love watching client’s excitement grow from our initial meeting through to transforming ideas into reality, whilst keeping the project enjoyable and stress free. I offer custom design packages depending on your requirements. You may be after a little direction and guidance to get you started, including space planning, colour and furniture ideas, or a full comprehensive package which takes you from beginning to end and covers everything in between. Whether you have a modest budget or an extravagant one...I love the challenge that both can bring. I would love the opportunity to be part of transforming your space into a beautiful and functional one. P E W

Inspired by this place, it’s wild and changeable weather, it’s people. Geraldine loves to capture the more raw Raglan - it’s natural tones and colour pallette - the grey misty mornings, the black sand, the greens and browns. Geraldine thoughtfully curates her work into collections and holds exhibitions annually. Here she likes to tell a story about each image giving it more soul, it’s more than just the image - it’s the mood it portrays or the feeling it evokes, a memory even. Exclusive, professionally framed artworks - new works from 2019 onwards are ‘1-piece’ - only one of each image is sold. Geraldine is available for commissioned work and would love to meet with you, view your space and create a piece exclusively for you. Featuring in this year’s Raglan Arts Weekend, Geraldine will be exhibiting her work alongside painter Matt Meenagh and Jewellery designer Sarah Steed at the St Peter’s Church Hall on Bow Street. haingaroa Talent Factory is coming up on Saturday, October 10, and the Local Rag checked out some of the mentors and judges that will be involved in the youth talent competition. With $1500 in cash prizes, a chance to be mentored by industry pro’s and record a track at CSR studios the event is gearing up to be a huge opportunity for young performers. The live performances will be held at the Town Hall on Saturday, October 10th from 5pm. facebook.com/Whaingaroa-TalentFactory-104828231353175 From left, Reiki, Teina and Joe.

Mentor Bio: Reiki Ruawai

Mentor Bio: Teia Kennedy

Local musician Reiki Ruawai has recently debuted his solo single and is also member of the bands Masaya and Cornerstone Roots. His free flowing style of surfing and skate living reflects into his output on music. With a fresh new style of harmonies that soothe the stressed head. A new generation of heavy R&B has never heard so much filthy kick and bass. Kick back and relax to the smooth tunes that this Rags fella is producing.

Pairing an old soul with youthful swagger provides local artist Teia Kennedy a perfect platform to share stories through her music. With more than a decade of songwriting and live performance under her belt, the Ngati Kahungunu musician takes inspiration from the people and world around her. Inspired by a classic ‘old school’ vibe, Kennedy’s rich vocal tones and cleverly styled lyrics are well blended with simple, honest acoustic arrangements to create a unique sound.

Mentor Bio: Joe Wilson Joe is a fun loving, down to earth guy who loves seeing people go after what they are passionate about in life and be willing to give things a shot! He has extensive experience mentoring youth as both a teacher and a youth worker and now works as a youth development advisor across the Waikato District. Joe has a massive passion for music and spent four years living between NZ, Australia and the UK as a singer songwriter… well, a busker playing on the streets! “Music is such a cool way for people to come together and find common ground. Writing your own songs and sharing your stories, experiences and feelings through music is so special and anyone who feels like giving it a go should 100% go for it!” Joe is passionate about young people having the best starts in life and being provided the opportunities and support to have fun exploring and learning about who they are and what paths they want to take in life. “WTF is such an awesome opportunity to share your talents and express yourself through music!” Joe releases his music under the name ‘Joe John Wilson’ and has a new single coming out next Friday (25th September) on Spotify and all the other usual digital and social media platforms. “Stoked to be a part of this awesome community project and see our youth showcase their talents!”

Mentor Bio: Conor McCabe Conor McCabe grew up in Raglan before moving to Melbourne where he formed Fortunes with Hamiltonian, Barnaby Mathews, in 2015. They produced a number of records and built a strong following over a 5 year period while Conor developed a reputation for “sensual crooning vocals” - according to just one of many rave reviews. Back in Raglan while Melbourne is in lockdown we’re super excited to have Connor on-board for WTF2020.
