RAGLAN ARTS WEEKEND SNEAKY PREVIEW

Thousands of art lovers from far and wide will be flocking to Whaingaroa to get their creative fix at the Raglan Arts Weekend this month (26-28 October).

From painting, illustration, sculpture, glass, ceramics, textile, through to graffiti, taxidermy, jewellery, photography, woodwork, weaving, metalwork and prints, there’s sure to be something for everyone’s tastes.

Here’s a sneaky peek at some of the emerging and established artists taking part.

Loesje De Bree’s images depict the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours of human beings, and how she personally perceives them. This way of working stems from her background as an arts therapist, and her attempts to understand humanity and what it means to be human. Loesje’s paintings are mainly acrylics and multimedia. She also creates sculptures using paper, cardboard and recyclables.

Supper Room, Raglan Town Hall, 41 Bow Street

Doug Ford translates what he has seen and where he has been, through his brush – his emotions and feelings about a place are poured onto canvas. Whether it will be a wooden cutout native bird, a painted driftwood head, a recycled brush head or a stunning painting, you can be sure you are getting a piece of art painted with love, passion and creativity.

Made Gallery, 20 Bow Street

Eleanor Gee paints predominantly out in nature - en plein air, and all the smaller works in her collection were created while immersed in the natural world. You might recognise some favourite peaceful spots around Raglan. Representation of the landscape is, however, secondary to the feeling of being there, and abstractions of colour and form are used to convey emotion.

The Hatch Emerging Artist Exhibition, Raglan Town Hall

Tessa Skerman’s practice involves painting various compositions on board, slicing these paintings up using a bench saw, and then placing these ‘slats’ back into a fragmented, abstract composition. The resulting unique artwork leads the eye on a journey across the scene, composing a new vista corresponding to affinities of form, line, angles and depth.

467B Te Mata Road

Bridget Tasker’s body of work is entitled 'Out my window'. The pieces are a celebration of Raglan, with a colourful twist, texture and flare. Her art is expressed and created with energy rather than sight. Having lived in Raglan for the last six years, Bridget has had the time to paint, ponder, and explore this wild place.

Clare Wimmer is a passionate potter who has been teaching pottery in her community for many years, creating works for national exhibitions and selling in local galleries. Her studio, PotwithClare in Waitetuna, provides a supportive and engaging environment for both adults and children to experience the joys of clay. Under Clare’s expert guidance, students are empowered to explore their creativity and achieve success.

SCULPTURES COME TO LIFE IN BUSH SETTING

Waikeri Sculpture Studio might be a new addition to the Raglan Arts Weekend but it brings together a group of very experienced sculptors.

The brainchild of Taimoana Meuli and Lucretia Bird, Waikeri Sculpture Studio will exhibit large scale stone sculptures in a picturesque nature walk located just a stone’s throw from Manu Bay.

They are looking forward to showcasing their work alongside other talented local sculptors, including Simon Te Wheoro, Pita Mataira and Maida Barker.

“There will be 25 full-blown, threedimensional sculptures weighing from two tonne down to around 50 kilos,” Tai says.

The Arts Weekend will serve as a springboard for a permanent Raglan sculpture walk, initially located at the Wainui Road property and moving to another larger section on Whaanga Road in a couple of years’ time.

While this is the pair’s first foray into the Raglan Arts Weekend, they are no strangers to the world of art.

Tai has close to 30 years sculpting experience and many will have seen his work dotted around Raglan, including one at the entrance to Papahua Campground and the Four Directions sculpture collaboration at Wainui Reserve.

Lucretia previously worked in clay and small portraiture sculptures but has been out of the art scene for a few years raising a family. She is a newcomer to hard stone sculpting,

taking her first steps at the Thames 2024 Ngakau sculpture symposium under the tutelage of Jocelyn Pratt.

She’s excited to work alongside Tai; “I’m very lucky to have Tai as a mentor and I’m learning the tools, learning how to scale up and learning the concepts of simplifying,” she says.

Her first stone sculpture, created at the symposium, will feature as the artist’s donation to the RAW Preview Exhibition.

“It’s a very humble bowl carved from Thames Maratoto Andesite rock,” she says.

Far from being a modest piece of work, Tai says; “A bowl teaches you the dynamics of using the equipment; from cutting, grinding, negative grinding and then polishing. So it teaches you the formula to be able to create large sculpture.”

The outdoor gallery has been a labour of love; the cabin, once used by visiting surfers, has been tidied up to welcome RAW guests, the bush has been whacked, tracks cut and gravelled, and a stream cleared to create a natural backdrop to the sculptures.

The land belongs to Christian Higgins, Tai’s old sculpting buddy, and in their work clearing the plot, Lucretia and Tai have even uncovered a relic of Christian’s work that will also feature in the exhibition.

All of the work will be for sale and a portion of the commission will be donated to an organisation close to Tai’s heart.

“I've chosen Coast Guard because I was in Coast Guard for many years and it’s imperative that they are supported

because they save a lot of lives out here,” he says.

As well as a permanent sculpture walk, Tai and Lucretia plan on holding sculpture symposiums and hosting sculptor in residence in the future, and they are keen to teach sculpting to the next generation.

“Sculpture isn't normally being taught past clay in a high school realm. So I'm on a bit of a mission to bring it back to the younger people,” Lucretia says.

Get your walking shoes on and visit Waikeri Sculpture Studio, 617A Wainui Road, Raglan – open Labour Weekend (26-28 October), 10am-5pm.

RAGLAN ARTS WEEKEND ON TRACK TO WOW THIS LABOUR WEEKEND

One of the Waikato’s best visual arts events, the Raglan Arts Weekend (RAW) returns to wow visitors this Labour Weekend with over 65 artists throwing open their studio doors to welcome guests.

Art aficionados can grab an official RAW map to not only discover Raglan’s finest artists, but also explore the beautiful Whaingaroa coastline on a self-guided trail of the 42 studios. There is something for everyone, from large stone sculptures, painting, illustration and designer jewellery, to shibori silk techniques, large-scale street art, Kākahu weaving and an ‘Art of Surf’ exhibition, as well as clay, homewares, woodwork, graffiti, photography and more.

“I often get asked about what’s new, and this year I have really been struck by the bringing back of more ancient, old-school techniques to do one’s art, with some of our artists going abroad to go deep into their practice,” says Nicky Brzeska, who has run RAW for five years.

“Jean Carbon uses ancient resist dying techniques of Shibori and clamped blocks to pattern glorious silk fabrics, whilst David Loughlin in The Hatch uses a 150 year old camera to produce eerily beautiful photographs. Then you’ve got the intriguing French ethical taxidermist

Annick Faubert with her refreshing take on the age-old practice, and bespoke hat maker Labour of Wild who uses a traditional alchemy of heat, steam and pressure for her designs,” Nicky says. “What I just love about RAW is that you get into these creative processes and brilliant minds. It’s very inspiring.”

Visitors will also be treated to two live installations in Volcom Lane by established artist Simon Dickey, as well as an interactive performance piece by Elisabeth Denis, ‘Cold-Blooded-Dermatographic-Locution’, at Little Hill Studios on the Saturday evening. There are also workshops by various artists throughout the weekend.

“One of the initiatives that we are very excited about is our collaboration with Raglan’s first Country and Blues Festival, which will be running alongside RAW this year,” says Nicky. “We’re looking forward to the buzz in town with outdoor busking and gigs as well as indoor concerts from morning to night.”

The following are a selection of artists taking part in the annual RAGLAN ARTS WEEKEND at Labour Weekend. The RAW artists are highlighted with a RAW logo.

JEANNINE FRIEDRICH

CONTEMPORARY • MIXED MEDIA • ABSTRACT

Hey, I’m Jeannine—a self-taught artist from Berlin who thinks life’s too short for black and white.

My style? Anything but ordinary. My canvas is a playground where bright colours have a party, layering paint until it leaps off. Overpainting? That’s my jam. Patience? Not so much. Acrylics are my best friends—they dry fast. Words often sneak into my art, hiding like little secrets. Think a piece is finished? Maybe. But don’t be surprised if I pop up with a big brush to stir things up. I believe art should make you feel something—like happiness or the thrill of discovering something new each time you look.

My cozy studio and tiny gallery are nestled between the water and cabbage trees here in Raglan. This Arts Weekend, swing by, have a chat, and maybe find a piece that resonates with you. It won’t be dull!

Visit me at Raglan Arts Weekend at Titiro Mai Art Studio - 50 Omahina Street, Rangitahi.

Dive into my colourful world at jeanninefriedrich.com or catch me on Instagram @friedrich.jeannine.

Opened in 2019 - Little Hills Studio has 3 studios, a workshop, lounge and small gallery with awesome views over Whaingaroa.

Home to Wanda Barker’s evolving art practice, and the studio of Kate Van der drift. We create: paintings, sculptures and a lovely mess in our large space (2 minutes from town off main road).

We have shown a range of artists: Mary Spacapan, Lindsay Baker, Xavier Meade, Stuart Shepherd, Fleur Rubingh, Caleb Osborne, Matt Kambic, Kate Van der drift.

2024 for RAW we host Elizabeth Dennis in the gallery space, an interdisciplinary artist focusing on visual art and writing. Her work explores relational aesthetics, journalistic and autobiographical writing, performances, and interactive installations.

We have small experimental pieces of Kate’s on show in her studio.

Wanda shows new cut and collaged small works, sculptures, books and cards, and traditional watercolours of Wanda’s mother, Marcia Barker will be available.

Elizabeth has a live performance in the gallery on Saturday evening. We will be open through RAW Saturday, Sunday 10-5, Monday 10- 2pm. We look forward to seeing you.

YANIV JANSON

CONTEMPORARY FINE ARTIST

Yaniv Janson is a talented and innovative contemporary fine artist. Yaniv creates vibrant, multisensory abstract works that bring environmental and social issues to life, inviting viewers to interact and reflect.

He has continually achieved critical acclaim, both in New Zealand and internationally - in particular, representing New Zealand at the United Nations Headquarters in New York with his exhibition ‘Please Do Touch.’ Yaniv is neurodiverse and has achieved success as an artist both locally and worldwide. Throughout his travels, Yaniv has been profoundly affected by the stark global inequality in access to resources. This experience drives his art, which seeks to raise awareness and inspire action for social and environmental change.

Yaniv’s emphasis on interactive art at RAW is aimed around family time and colouring together to encourage connection, spark conversations and to empower individuals to recognize their own capacity for positive impact.

ZASHA SKYE IMPRESSIONISTIC ARTIST

Over Arts Weekend you can find Zasha Skye’s work at Wabi Sabi Studio.

There will be an Opening Night on Friday 25th October at 6pm, with live music by Tukana and Ashley Knox, alongside Heavy Lounge Suite. Drinks are sponsored by Sawmill Brewery.

This Exhibition ‘Body of Water’ is an exploration of water holding memory. Water is a medium that changes, moves, runs through our rivers and sits within our skies. The idea of water never truly going away is represented within the paintings through the use of blue motifs, references of our Papatūānuku and water that surrounds us like the Wainui river.

The works explore a multitude of colour and tonal range through the use of oil paint. Each piece is an encapsulated moment in time created through portraiture, that form a sense of emotion and connection between the audience and the artwork.

Iconsidermyself a visual storyteller this year the quiet winter months have allowed time for introspection, contemplation and experimentation. I have explored a myriad of ideas and techniques that eventually led me to a fresh new approach to my work .

EXPRESSING ENERGY & MOVEMENT

Simon has endeavoured to let go of the outcome to focus on the moment of expressing figurative and landscapes with vigour and vitality.

People often comment on his work being filled with movement, you can see this within his charcoal and oil pieces.

He paints like he draws with expressive mark making. “Sometimes it doesn’t all come together, but that is fine. You can’t expect great outcomes all the time when working at high intensity”.

At RAW 2024, Simon will provide two live installation events in Volcom Lane. Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th Oct, both from 2-3 pm.

Paula’s artistic journey took a transformative turn when she moved to Raglan in 2021. Surrounded by unique beach rocks, the stunning Mt Karioi, and breathtaking coastal views from her studio, she discovered her passion for hand-building with clay.

Her wall-hangings weave pieces together with hemp/ linen cord into new forms embodying a timeless allure that reflects the spirit of Raglan.

Her ‘Primitive’ Collection is a testament to her artistic process - a dance between serendipity and honed skill. The unpredictable nature of each piece adds to its uniqueness and fuels Paula’s journey for creative exploration. ART + GARDEN WITH SPROUT GARDENER

A CHAT WITH STINA SVENSSON

THE LOCAL RAG BRINGS YOU A SPACE TO INTRODUCE LOCAL BUSINESSES IN WHĀINGAROA. WE TALK TO LOCALS ABOUT LAUNCHING THEIR BUSINESSES, THEIR IDEAS, ACHIEVEMENTS AND CHALLENGES.

Sprout

Gardener blends gardening expertise with creative artistry. Offering bespoke garden designs and hand-embroidered vintage denim, this unique business brings beauty to both outdoor spaces and personal style.

Can you describe your business and its components?

As Sprout Gardener, I offer gardening and botanical design services, while as an artist, I create bespoke embroidered vintage denim pieces. I’m passionate about bringing beauty into the world through art and gardening.

What led you to combine these two strands in your business?

I’m a very hands-on, active person, so it felt natural to merge my interests in gardening, design, and art into a business that supports both people’s well-being and the environment.

Tell us more about your art practice and your gardening services.

As a multidisciplinary artist, my work spans embroidery, sculpture, illustration,

and more. Currently, I’m creating a range of wearable denim featuring unique handstitched designs, available soon alongside custom orders. I use vintage denim for its quality, character, and eco-friendly benefits. I’m also working on an outdoor installation for the Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens.

My gardening services cover food growing, garden design, native plant regeneration, and general garden maintenance. With years of experience in various gardens, I’ve built up a versatile skill set that allows me to tackle any gardening challenge. I draw inspiration from biophilic design and the natural world, blending art and nature in my approach.

Why is Raglan the perfect location for your business?

The creative and diverse community in Raglan is truly inspiring, and it feels like the ideal place to contribute my gardening and art skills.

What challenges do you face in business, and what have you learned?

Gardening is physically demanding, so learning to look after my body has been a

key challenge. I manage this by rotating tasks, practising yoga, staying hydrated, and nourishing myself with good kai.

What’s your business goal or vision for the future?

My vision is to create a business that adds beauty and creative value to

people’s lives, whether through garden design, home art, or engaging workshops. How can people contact you? You can find me on Instagram: @celestial_festival @sprout_gardener Or on my website: celestialfestival.com celestialfestival.com/sproutgardener

SURF SERIES

BROUGHT TO YOU BY RAGLAN SURF CO

The Local Rag talks to Mark Frost of Bayleys Real Estate who has curated and organised the exhibition.

What inspired you to get involved in the Raglan Arts Weekend with a surfing focus and theme?

Bayleys sponsored last year and again this year, and while viewing various exhibitions I thought it would be cool to have a curation of surf focussed art because Raglan has a rich surf history derived from its world class surf breaks. With the arrival of surf culture in the 60s came art, music, and a vibrant energy which continues to thrive. This exhibition showcases the art and hand crafting of several Raglan surfboard shapers who are an intrinsic part of the surf culture today.

What was the response of the local shapers involved?

The shapers were keen to be on board. The boards have been custom made for this exhibition along with surf memorabilia from local artists. Many surfers view their boards, both new and old, as works of art, both on the wave and on the wall!

What is your personal connection to surfing?

I grew up surfing in Wellington amongst wind swept mush then started surfing in Raglan about 20 years ago when I moved to the city of the future. I moved to Raglan permanently about 12 years ago for the surf and the awesome coastal lifestyle. Everything from an outdoor/ water sports perspective is right on your doorstep.

Do you have a few interesting pieces of memorabilia yourself?

Yes, a few old boards, some old school photos of the area along with some OG NZ skate boards. I recently got into hobby horsing so am starting to collect some early memorabilia. I think hobby horse beach racing is Raglan’s next biggest sport.

Boards and memorabilia are available for purchase.

GRIT AND DREAMS, FLASH FICTION & THE WORLD OF PUBLISHING

EVENT NEWS FROM THE RAGLAN OLD SCHOOL ARTS CENTRE

The Whāingaroa Raglan Writers World (WRWW) programme is back again in October with workshops on offer for keen new writers through to experienced writers wanting to hone their writing skills and learn more about publishing.

This series of workshops presented over two days features award-winning writers Mandy Hager, Anita Arlov and Ben Brown, including our very own local talent Ann Neville and Tina Shaw. Tina says “I'm excited to be involved in the Whāingaroa Writers Day. It's a wonderful opportunity to get together with like-minded people and be inspired to new writing heights. A day like this, with extraordinary speakers and tutors, is gold.”

Anita Arlov is an award-winning writer and judge of flash fiction and poetry. She has staged Inside Out Open Mic for Writers, worked with a small team to host Writers Lounge in the Auckland Art Gallery, and was the 2019 Auckland Chair for NZ National Flash Fiction Day. Anita’s writing has been published widely in New Zealand and overseas.

Ben Brown (Ngāti Mahuta, Ngāti Koroki, Ngāti Paoa) was born in 1962 in Motueka, which is further away from him now than he cares to think about. Ben has been writing all his life for his own enjoyment, and published his first children’s book in 1991. He’s an awardwinning author who writes for children and adults across all genres, including poetry, which he also enjoys performing. Generally, if pressed, Ben will have something to say about anything. He was the inaugural NZ Reading Ambassador for Children – Te Awhi Rito. In 2024 Brown was appointed Te Kaipukahu University of Waikato Writer in Residence and now lives in Hamilton. He is also a father of two, which he considers his best work to date.

Mandy Hager is a multiaward-winning author. In 2019 she received the Storylines Margaret Mahy Medal for lifetime achievement and a distinguished contribution to New Zealand’s literature for young people. For ten years she taught the novel-writing course for Whitireia. Mandy has been the recipient of several fellowships, residencies and prizes, including the Beatson Fellowship, the Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship and the Waikato University Writer in Residence.

Ann Neville is the director of the publishing company, CreateBooks, which specialises in Manuscript Assessment, Editing, SelfPublishing Preparation and Distribution, and Biographies. She is an accomplished facilitator and research writer in the education field and has a special interest in strategies that mitigate against all forms of violence.

Tina Shaw’s writing career covers a diverse range of age groups and genres. Her recent novel, Ephemera, is set on the Waikato River, a location Tina knows well from growing up outside Kirikiriroa. As Editor, her 7th Edition of the Bateman NZ Writer's Handbook was published in 2023. Her novel manuscript A House Built on Sand won the 2023 Michael Gifkins Text Prize and has been published by Text Publishing. A member of NZAMA, Tina works as a manuscript assessor and Editor of the NZSA quarterly publication NZ Author and divides her time between Taupõ and Whāingaroa.

FIND YOUR BALANCE AT THE SPACE IN RAGLAN

The Space is a place for you, for everyone, to balance body, mind and spirit. Community and connection is important to us, and we cultivate these values by offering accessible yoga and pilates classes taught by experienced teachers.

Back in 2016, we first started The Space (down Volcom Lane, across from Raglan Roast). As the first dedicated yoga space in Raglan, we thought we’d try it for a month, so we pulled together all our yoga mats and tea mugs from home. Now, it’s been nine years! The Space is grateful to everyone who has come to join us for yoga every day (we even jumped online over lockdowns). We’ve delivered thousands of classes and shared so many downward dogs and moments of connection. Yoga is about presence. We still love it just as much as day one.

There’s a constant ebb and flow of locals, visitors to Raglan, regulars and first-timers. Our goal is for everyone to leave feeling good in their bodies and breath. The benefits go so much further than the shapes we make. All the systems of the body and mind benefit from increasing your range of movement, whether or not you can touch your toes. You can see the glow on someone’s face when they finish class. Over time, the benefits really stack up to increase one’s ability to move and surf, love and live better.

The Space offers a mix of styles and classes for every stage of your journey. A yoga practice is for you. It’s entirely non-competitive, and instead focuses on self-inquiry and being in your own body and breath.

This summer our teachers include…

• Patti has been teaching movement in Raglan for over 20 years, offering feel good classes to epic playlists.

• Bexie founded the Space alongside Patti, and is our community-minded greenie who has a wealth of experience and curiosity to offer yoga to all.

• Bethany is also a co-owner of the studio. Bethany’s inspiring classes are perfect to bring balance to someone with an active lifestyle.

• Tessa teaches Mat Pilates. As the owner of Raglan Physiotherapy, she is passionate and knowledgeable about the body.

• Kiri loves all things healing and expressionwhether it be through art, movement, or music.

• Elena brings the spice. She invites you out of your comfort zone in a playful way.

• Diane offers a grounding practice. Though she has joined us recently, Diane has been practicing with us since before The Space.

• Jordan has just jumped on our timetable to offer a fun, beat-based Friday Happy Hour class.

What we offer… Try Gentle for a feel good class and a place to start, well, gently! Mat Pilates is also a great starter class. From there, you can give Hatha, or even Vinyasa, a go. Power is a great way to challenge and boost strength after you’ve built your yoga foundations. Or you may slow down and go to a Restore class to reset. Patti offers a Broga class for the guys.

Tips for your first class! Arrive early to settle in. Wear comfortable clothes to move in. If you want to try from home first, message us to learn about our online offerings.

We are offering a Beginners Series for those who want to build or revisit the yoga foundations on Mondays in November at 7:30pm. Book thespaceraglan@gmail. com or follow us on social media where we’ll be giving away a free spot @thespaceraglan

Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Ruapuke, Shai Brods home and gardens are a serene sanctuary of sustainable living and a work of art. A passionate advocate for organic farming and permaculture, Shai has become a beloved member of the Raglan growers community. His property is a testament to his dedication to nature. Over 100 fruit and nut trees dot the landscape, while chickens and sheep forage. Lush, organic gardens, nurtured by carefully tended soil, yield a bounty of vibrant vegetables. A bubbling stream, flowing directly from the maunga, adds to the idyllic setting. Shai is a permaculture based landscape designer, a home orchardist, an organic market gardener and a Thai yoga massage therapist. Over the years, Shai has travelled extensively, learning from organic growers and communities around the globe. He has developed his own unique approach to gardening, combining traditional techniques with modern knowledge. He explains, “I found myself loving the old ways of growing and handling crops, from seed saving to compost making and food growing to preserving. I have picked the best techniques and approach and started growing and finding my own special way that works for me.”

Shais’ New Zealand journey began in the Coromandel Peninsula. Here, he lived on and maintained a certified organic farm. In 2016, he made the move to Raglan—drawn to the town’s unique energy. Shai says, “Within the first month of arrival I made great connections with local growers and I started working at Solscape looking after the food

gardens for about 6 years. This provided fresh organic produce to the on-site cafe and sometimes the excess would be sold at the local organic shops”. Over the years, he has also offered many workshops on the topics of organic growing, permaculture based gardening/landscaping and compost making.

Growing up in a small agricultural village in Israel, Shai was surrounded by a community of people with diverse land-based skills. His deep-rooted love for food and growing food stems from this environment. He explains, “I grew up in a country brimming with culture, colours, and flavours. As a young child, I vividly remember accompanying my Imma (mother) to the market each week, where we would purchase fresh produce, pita bread, and fish for our Friday night shabbat dinner. Just ten minutes in this type of market will change your life forever. The sensory overload—the sounds, colours, smells, and constant jostling of people—is truly immersive. It’s a place where everyone is eager to fill their bags and baskets before the weekend.” It was his Imma and Grandmother who taught him to cook, and even today, Shai says, “I’ll call my mom and ask, ‘Remember those stuffed peppers you used to make? Tell me how you did it.’ And then we’ll keep chatting for another 30 minutes about all sorts of delicious food possibilities and life in general.”

Shai firmly believes that food is a fundamental aspect of our existence and that a healthy life necessitates access to nutritious, wholesome food. He wholeheartedly supports local initiatives that promote the production and consumption of nutrient-dense, living foods that nourish both individuals and communities. His involvement in the Raglan Growers Market, where he maintains a weekly stand, is a testament to this commitment. As Shai explains, “The market is a vital hub for building and maintaining long-lasting community relationships. I am deeply grateful for the market organisers, volunteers, and, of course, the people who come out to support all of us growers!”

When I asked Shai what he loves about living in Raglan, he explained, “The West Coast has a truly unique energy and mentality. I really appreciate the down-to-earth and grounded bunch of people who live around Maunga Karioi. The nature here is so powerful and pristine, and the soil is so abundant and nourishing. It feels good to be here”.

Don’t dig your compost into the soil; simply spread it on top. This helps preserve soil structure and fosters healthy, active biological connections between plants, microorganisms, and fungi.

During the summer months, cover your garden with straw mulch to retain moisture, minimise weeds, maintain soil structure, and keep beneficial soil organisms happy and sheltered.

If you desire ten tomato plants, grow twenty and select the best ten from them for a higher success rate. If they all thrive, you’ll have extras to share with others or plant for future seasons. This strategy can be applied to any vegetable you cultivate—always double the seed amount to ensure better selection when it comes time to plant.

In Season - Asparagus

QUICK IDEAS

Make a tasty asparagus breakfast - Blanch a bunch of asparagus in boiling salted water for a few minutes until tender-crisp. Drain, toss with a tablespoon of butter and a squeeze of lemon. Poach two eggs in salted water for 4 minutes. Serve on a slice of Raglan Artisan sourdough bread and dip the asparagus spears into the runny yolk. Make roasted asparagus with romesco sauce. Blend together a 400g jar of roasted red capsicum (drained, or roast your own two large red capsicum). Add 3 medium tomatoes, 1 cup toasted almonds, 1/4 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 2 cloves garlic, and the juice of half a lemon. Pulse until you achieve your desired consistency. While the romesco is blending, roast 2 bunches of asparagus with 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt, and pepper. To serve, pour the romesco onto a plate and top with the roasted asparagus.

ASPARAGUS FACTS

• Egyptians used asparagus spears as gifts for the gods. It has been grown for thousands of years, and was even depicted on Egyptian tombs dating from 400 BC.

• They are a good source of vitamins K and C, and are also a prebiotic. This helps feed our gut bacteria, keeping our microbiome healthy.

• Asparagus can cause a distinct odour in urine due to a compound called asparagusic acid. While many people can smell it, others can’t, making it a fascinating genetic variation.

Catch Shai’s nutrient-dense produce at The Raglan Growers Market every Friday from 5-7 pm at the Stewart Street church hall lawn. For all things permaculture design-related, you can get in touch with Shai by email at edible_landscapes@hotmail.com

TONIC SALON WELCOMES NEW STYLIST AND UNVEILS FRESH, ECO-FRIENDLY COLOUR RANGE

The Local Rag chats to Rachel, owner of Tonic, to get an update on fresh developments at the salon.

What’s new at Tonic?

Firstly, I’m super excited to have Charlotte join our team with all her knowledge & experience.

We are very happy to have just launched a beautiful new colour range that’s free of ammonia, ppd’s, resorcinol’s and is full of organic oils. It is allergen & fragrance free ,vegan and not tested on animals.

We also stock Davroe & Davines which are high quality sustainable retail products you can take home to maintain your hair.

Why did you decide to make the change

After having a bit of a health scare and discovering I had developed toxicity poisoning from years of breathing in the chemicals at work, I decided I had to make some changes if I was going to continue working in the salon, plus I didn’t want my staff to end up with issues like I did.

After testing many different companies I chose to go with the Evo colour range due to its high quality. It fits with the ethos of our salon and is environmentally friendly. It leaves the bad stuff out and puts the good stuff in but won’t compromise on performance, leaving your hair feeling and looking fabulous.

Due to the new colours being a bit more pricey we will have to raise our prices slightly to cover the costs.

For the month of October we will be offering a complimentary moisturising /conditioning treatment with every colour & haircut package, which will leave your hair feeling beautiful and healthy.

With Xmas only 12 weeks away be sure to book well in advance to ensure you don't miss out.

We have some lovely gift packs available - great for prezzies or to treat yourself.

Salon hours are: Monday-Saturday with late nights on Tuesday and Thursday night till 7pm.

Book online through our website or fresha or phone 8250313.

Look forward to seeing you all soon. From the tonic team, Rach, Annick, Eva & Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE

My name is Charlotte and I am Tonic's new senior stylist. I have recently moved to Raglan from Matakana/ Leigh. I've been in NZ for 5 years, starting my journey in Golden Bay as a horse trek guide and then working on different farms and lifestyle blocks, and most recently as a bush school teacher and children's art workshop facilitator. I love being outdoors and in nature as well as salon life and making people look and feel great!

I have been a hairdresser for 15 years. Previously I have worked in a small boutique salon in Warkworth and prior to that in my hometown, Worcester UK at a salon called Wicked hair where I was mentored by Hans Peter Wurmil, a local hairdressing legend. I also travelled and worked as a stylist in Australia and in parts of Asia.

I specialise in Balayage and personalised colouring but I also enjoy cutting. I will be offering wedding hair at Tonic and look forward to creating beautiful hair ups for brides and their wedding party. I love the atmosphere that a special occasion brings to the salon.

I'm looking forward to meeting more of the community, working at Tonic and creating beautiful hair for my clients. My books are open for appointments. I will be offering late night appointments on a Tuesday evening and you can book in via the Tonic website, fresha app, or calling the salon.

EXPLORE WHAINGAROA HARBOUR WITH RAGLAN BOAT CHARTERS

Discover the beauty of Raglan Harbour with public cruises, private charters, and exciting new boat adventures. Raglan Boat Charters now offers a thrilling experience on its new amphibious vessel, the Waka Huia. Book your cruise today for a unique perspective of the harbour!

Can you please introduce Raglan Boat Charters to our readers?

We're a tour boat company offering public cruises, private charters, and workboat activities, including commercial operations and ferry services for large groups. Our aim is to entertain customers while raising awareness of Maori heritage and environmental care of Whaingaroa (Raglan) harbour. We support local conservation efforts and keep harbour history alive through our crew's knowledge and passion.

What boats do you have on the water?

We operate two vessels:

1. The Wahine Moe, our mother ship, can accommodate up to 70 passengers. It's well known in the Raglan community, having been in the harbour for 16 years.

2. Our exciting new addition this year is the Waka Huia, so named because she resembles a traditional Maori carved treasure box. She's a 9m amphibious RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) from the New Zealand boat maker Sealegs. Powered by a 300hp outboard engine, she can carry 11 passengers and 1 skipper on land and water. We believe we need a second boat when the Wahine Moe is booked privately or fully booked; we also need better customer options for windy days and smaller groups, and finally, there is commercial workboat demand in the region.

What options do you offer for harbour cruises and functions?

We provide:

1. 90-minute public cruises on the Wahine Moe with optional fish & chips and a licensed bar.

2. The Wahine Moe as a venue with transport and catering options.

adventure, exploring areas inaccessible to the mother ship due to its speed and amphibious capabilities.

How do people get in touch to book or find out more?

What is appealing and unique about what you offer?

Our public cruises cater to everyone. The Wahine Moe is extremely stable and manoeuvrable in shallow waters, accessing many hidden bays. The Waka Huia offers more

For public cruises, book online at raglanboatcharters. co.nz. For private charter inquiries, email info@ raglanboatcharters.co.nz.

3. Private cruises on the Waka Huia for smaller groups, supporting various activities from picnics to water sports.

HOULT CONSTRUCTION

CRAFTING UNIQUE, HIGH-QUALITY HOMES IN RAGLAN

Hoult Construction is your local residential and commercial building company, proudly serving the Raglan community since 2018.

After spending 12 years working in both the residential and commercial sectors in Auckland, we gained a solid understanding of the dos and don’ts of running a successful construction business. This experience taught us the importance of care and attention to detail on every project.

Our team thrives on a strong work ethic and believes that success stems from great, honest and clear communication. Keeping everyone in the loop ensures expectations are met and results in a finished product that exceeds standards.

Our journey so far has been steady and deliberate. Patience and precision have been key to our growth, and while we’re not aiming to become a massive company overnight, we trust that the quality of our work will guide us to where we need to be.

What kinds of projects have you been working on and what results have you achieved?

We’ve worked on a wide range of areas in construction, from residential new builds to commercial development. Since starting in Raglan we have worked closely with Elevate Homes, handling everything from site prep, to making their transportable homes look like they were built right on-site, which has been a great experience.

We’re also working on a challenging but exciting home designed by Auckland architect Oli Booth, set for completion in early 2025. This project features some incredible design elements like curved walls and lots of timber, really pushing our craftsmanship.

In addition, we recently teamed up with Coolhouse low energy homes by Jessop Architects for a new build in Rangitahi, working with some awesome clients whose vision aligned perfectly with ours. It was a small space, but it was designed incredibly well, creating a beautifully liveable home. It's been a pleasure seeing these unique projects come to life!

We also completed our show home in Rangitahi in 2023, which is currently on the market. It’s a stunning

showcase of our capabilities and design style, reflecting the quality and creativity we bring to every project!

Based on client feedback - what do you feel are the strengths of your building company?

Based on client feedback, the strengths of our building company include excellent communication, with clients appreciating regular updates and clear breakdowns of progress, even when they aren’t on site. Our problem-solving skills and ability to offer helpful suggestions stand out, especially on complex builds. Clients also highlight our high-quality craftsmanship, noting that we never take shortcuts, and take care with every detail in our architectural projects. Lastly, being available and approachable throughout the build process has been key in maintaining strong client relationships.

What kinds of builds are you interested in taking on?

We are open to any building project but love the challenge and quirks an architectural build brings. We love the challenge of taking on architectural builds that push creativity and craftsmanship to new levels. But we also really enjoy working closely with our clients to create unique spaces that reflect their vision. We’re all about doing things a little differently, whether it's using reclaimed materials or adding special touches that give a home character and personality. For us, it’s not just about building something beautiful — it’s about making sure it feels truly one-of-a-kind.

Tell us about your team –

Our team consists of 6 qualified builders, 2 apprentices, and me. We all share a mutual love for surfing and golf, and you’ll often find us spending our afternoons together either in the water or on the golf course, having a few laughs. Team morale is super important to us — we believe that making time for the fun stuff is what keeps us motivated and energized. When it comes to work, we push each other to be the best builders we can be, always striving for topquality results. It’s a balance of hard work and good times that keeps our team ticking!

What do you think is the best way to reduce stress for those embarking on a house build?

The best way to reduce stress during a house build is to keep things simple and stay in close communication. Building a home can feel overwhelming, but having

a builder who listens, keeps you in the loop, and is proactive about problem-solving makes all the difference. We find that being upfront, clear, and flexible really helps take the pressure off. Plus, it’s important to enjoy the process — we like to remind clients that building a home should be exciting, and we’re here to handle the tricky bits so they can focus on the fun stuff!

What advice would you give those starting out on the journey of building their home?

My advice for anyone starting their home-building journey is to take your time planning and really think about what you want in your space. Be clear about your priorities and be open to flexibility, as things can change during the process. It’s also important to find a builder you trust and feel comfortable communicating with — a good relationship with your builder makes everything smoother. And lastly, enjoy the journey! It’s an exciting process, and while there may be a few bumps along the way, the end result will be worth it.

How do people get in touch if they want to know more and have a conversation about their ideas?

Flick Jack an email on info@houltconstrution.co.nz and arrange a time to meet and discuss plans or ideas.

TRUSTEES & EXECUTORS IN ESTATE ADMINISTRATION - CHECK OUT THESE FAQS

When somebody dies, the paperwork involved in proving the will and in sorting out the deceased’s property can be daunting for the family.

Certain steps need to be taken, such as finding the will, having the executors and trustees applying to the High Court for a Grant of Probate so they can deal with the deceased’s assets. Where there is no will, usually a next of kin applies to the High Court for a Grant of Letters of Administration giving them authority to deal with the assets. Title to property and bank accounts that are held in the sole name of the deceased cannot be transferred to beneficiaries without first obtaining either of these. Where the estate is small (i.e. under $15,000 in value), application to the High Court may not be necessary.

What is the Difference between Executors and Trustees?

A will usually appoints one or more people as “executors and trustees”. This involves two responsibilities: the role of the executor is to locate the will, arrange the funeral and ensure the instructions in the will for the distribution of the deceased’s assets to the beneficiaries, is carried out. On the other hand, the role of the trustee is to hold the estate assets on trust on behalf of the beneficiaries. In some cases, this can go on for a number of years, for example where the deceased left assets to young children and which are to be looked after until the children reach the age of 20, or longer.

What are the Duties of a Trustee?

If there is a will, the trustee must be familiar with it, the estate’s assets and the estate’s business (if any). A trustee must comply with the terms of the will and the law and make sure the estate’s assets are held in the name of the

trustees. Trustees must keep accurate records and proper accounts for the estate and where there is more than one trustee, their decisions must be unanimous. Generally, trustees must provide information about the estate to any beneficiary if asked to do so. Executors and trustees have a responsibility to make all reasonable inquires to make sure all potential beneficiaries or claimants of an estate are known. This may require searches of records at Births, Deaths & Marriages to see the marital status of the deceased and to check for children. Trustees must make sure the deceased has no outstanding debts and complete income tax returns for the deceased person with Inland Revenue up to the date of their death and obtain a new IRD number for the estate to finalise any income tax returns where the estate earns income from

any source until the assets are finally distributed to the beneficiaries.

What is the Six-Month Rule?

Trustees may be personally liable to claimants if they allow estate assets (including personal items and household chattels of the deceased) to be distributed to beneficiaries within six months of the date of the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration. Trustees can be held personally liable for those assets if a successful claim is made against the estate later on. For these reasons, it is highly recommended that trustees wait for at least six months to pass after the High Court has granted Probate/ Letters of Administration, before any distribution is made

s interest rates continue to drop, most economic commentators are picking that the property market will pick up into next year with more transactions happening and some modest value increases.

Over the last 20 years, every time the Official Cash Rate (OCR) has dropped the number of property transactions has increased, so it’s not too far fetched to think the market will soon get busier. Anecdotally, since the OCR cut in August we’ve seen a significant lift in new enquiries from investors, first home buyers, and movers.

At present, although across NZ buyers are getting more active, sellers are getting more active as well meaning that for now, there remain excess properties on the market for the number of buyers. In most parts of NZ it’s still a buyers’ market.

Property developers have been less active over the last 2 years and building consent numbers have been well down, whilst net population growth is up. This makes me think that when we eventually return to a sellers’ market we’ll start to see more ‘off the plans’ property contracts come across our desks.

So what is an ‘off the plans’ property contract and what are the potential risks and rewards?

With an ‘off the plans’ sale & purchase contract, you’re agreeing to purchase a completed dwelling and the land it’s on from a property developer. Typically, the construction hasn’t yet started or is part way through. The developer’s financiers will often want a certain number of ‘pre-sales’ before agreeing to finance the bigger project.

Once you’ve done your due diligence (obtained finance approval, had the contract checked by your Lawyer, valuation completed, done your homework on the

developer, etc) you typically pay a 10% deposit to secure the property, then there’s nothing to pay until the Council Code of Compliance comes through, at which point you’ll normally have between 5 & 10 days to pay the remaining 90% of the purchase price.

When everything goes right there can be some great upsides including:

Securing a property at today’s price with only a 10% deposit down when the values are going up

Potentially needing only a 5% deposit overall if owner occupied or 10% if investment

Ending up with a brand new home/rental with possibly a 10 year guarantee

However, everything doesn’t always go right. In fact over the last 3 years we’ve seen a lot that have gone wrong. For example:

Developers going bust before the construction is completed. Where does this leave the 10% deposit that you paid? This is a key part of the contract that you need to seek Legal advice on before putting pen to paper, along with finding out as much as you can on the developer (ie: first time developers vs highly experienced long term developers, previous bankruptcies, etc).

Signing up for ‘X’ and on completion you’re delivered ‘Y’. Again, the devil is in the detail of the contract; you may be signing a contract that gives the developer flexibility to make changes that you may not be happy with.

Timeframes getting pushed out. This has been the most problematic issue we’ve seen in the last few years. We’ve seen a lot of purchasers being told it’s 6-8 months until completion; it’s common for this to go out past a year and we’ve even seen over 2 years on many occasions. The big problem with this is that a construction mortgage approval will be valid for a maximum of 12 months (some banks less). If the construction is delayed past this point

Mortgage advisor Brett Wood. Contact Brett on 021 886 444 brett.wood@loanmarket.co.nz

Mortgage advisor Brendan Brits. Contact 021 913 302 brendan.brits@loanmarket.co.nz

you have to re-apply and you’re assessed on the criteria of the day. We’ve seen a number of people no longer qualify for the loan they previously did, leaving them unable to complete the purchase, which can mean loss of deposit.

Values decreasing before construction is completed. This is another major. We’ve seen people sign up to $1m ‘off the plans’ purchases and then 18months later when completed the valuation is $850,000. They still have to pay the full $1m. This can cause issues with equity which again could lead to not being able to complete the purchase. This could lead to not only loss of the 10% deposit, but if the developer can only re-sell for $850,000, the original purchaser may be liable for the difference between the $1m they signed up at and the $850,000 resale value.

‘Off the plans’ or ‘Turnkey’ property contracts need extra homework done and it’s essential to engage the experts before signing a contract. Although you’ll never be able to remove all the risk, your professional support team will be able to give you strategies to minimise the risks.
