ou could say Reiki Ruawai was born to be a musician.

there’s no way Reiki could have escaped a music career.

In fact, he was a one-year old when his parent’s band Cornerstone Roots performed at the first Soundsplash at the Raglan Town Hall in 2001.

Reiki and his sister Kaea spent a lot of time playing on instruments around the house as youngsters and he remembers being drawn to the bongos and other percussion instruments.

The local young singer/ songwriter/musician has just released his first solo single and he’s loving taking sole creative responsibility for his own work. Written and produced during lockdown with the help of his dad Brian Ruawai, Miller is a yearning for the summer sun; it’s vibe is dreamy with a sense of sadness lingering in the tempo and the melancholic vocals. “It’s about a reminiscing for the warmth of the sun. I wrote it on the last weekend in lockdown when the weather was just turning gloomy,” Reiki says. The song started life as Track 1 and then became Miller, a little tribute to his grandmother whose maiden name is Miller. Growing up with Cornerstone Roots as a backdrop to his life,

He was 10 when his father asked him to join the band. “I didn’t really take music seriously it was just a way to earn some money for lollies, and fish and chips,” he laughs. A year later, he recorded his first Cornerstone Root song Journey, “you can hear my voice is quite high in that track.” Reiki’s mum and dad have always been his biggest musical influences, he laughs when he talks about listening to some of his dad’s favourites including Metallica. But also, the old school sounds of the likes of legendary soul singer Curtis Mayfield and others were on high repeat. Mum Naomi Tuaopepe has always impressed with her musicality including sharing tunes on the piano.

play bass. A short while later, Jules Blewman (Tunes of I) on lead guitar and Joe Kaptein on keys joined the band. Like most young Kiwis, he did his OE in Europe and it was these travels that inspired the rest of the 2019 Masaya EP Tongue & Groove. Lockdown has been a creatively productive time for many artists and, with Masaya, Reiki wrote another lockdown song called Soda Dreams, which was released at the same time as Miller.

Four-year-old Reiki with mum Naomi Tuaopepe performing with Cornerstone Roots.

But music wasn’t always his driving force, as a young teenager Reiki had his heart set on a rugby career. He played in the top teams during his first years at Hamilton Boys High School. A skateboarding accident during Year 11 pre-season put paid to his rugby dreams. It also meant a switch to the Raglan Area School Surf Academy and more time for music. A year at Massey University in Wellington didn’t cut it for Reiki and he decided to pursue music outside the limitations of academia. Needing to put together a band for a university assignment, Reiki formed Masaya in 2019. He persuaded Kaea to jump on the drums and friend Muroki Pearsall (Cloak Bay) to

The hardworking muso accompanies Miller with a clever, zero budget, one-camera video shot by local filmmaker Billy Lee-Pope at Raglan Roast in Volcom Lane. While the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic have meant time for Reiki to kick back and concentrate on writing and making music, its meant live performances are a wait-and-see affair. A Masaya gig planned for Saturday, September 12 will be a sit-down, social distancing performance if the country stays in Alert Level 2. There’s also plans for a gig at the local live performance venue The Yot Club and Reiki would love to perform in the outside area of the Harbour View Hotel. Reiki loves nothing better than playing live, he says it provides the best feedback for a musician. “When you’re playing live you can definitely feel the energy of the crowd and it makes you perform better.”

ou will have noticed what seemed like a swift build and development by Soul Food farms at Te Uku, SH23.

Smart black buildings erected, substantial planting and impressive signage. As you might expect owner Kylie Robinson assures me it did not feel swift and it has indeed felt like an enormous project. They are an industrious family making it all work to get the project completed and even with a couple of delightful preschoolers in tow. Jacqui form the local Rag caught up with Kylie and Eddie to learn about what they have created. Can you explain and sum up what Soul Food Farm is all about and involves. Soul Food Farm is first and foremost a market garden. We are all about growing fresh seasonal produce using organic principles to supply to our local community, whether it be wholesale to our amazing local cafes and restaurants or direct to the public via our online store. Driving by we have seen a hive of activity on SH23. Do you have a new location? How has the process of building / setting up been? We have recently moved our garden from a small leased plot of land onto our new slice of paradise on the main road in Te Uku, here we have built our first home and expanded our growing space to four times the size of before. Our house was finished two weeks before COVID-19 lockdown so it’s been a hectic race to get moved

in and set up the garden space while still supplying fresh vegetables to as many local families as possible. We have had many big projects along the way but luckily for us we have fantastic friends and family who have helped us all the way. It really has taken our village. What is your goal for your initiative? We are aiming to create a multi-tiered business that regenerates our land, supports our young family financially and lets us live our dreams along the way. To do this we have incorporated other business ventures such as our Christmas tree farm and Air b n b accommodation and have a few other plans in the pipeline to incorporate regenerative agriculture in our day to day practices. What do you offer for locals and how do they find out more? Locals can now buy our fresh produce from our online store www.soulfoodfarmraglan.com which is loaded up once a week on a Monday afternoon with everything we have harvested fresh that day and I deliver this around town on Tuesdays. If they follow us on facebook soulfoodfarmraglan.com I advertise on there once the website is loaded. We love this method as it means we know that people are getting the freshest possible produce from us. We do have a new retail option coming up soon once the hard winter growing season is finished so watch this space. You can also find our fresh produce being used at local eateries The Shack, Ulo’s kitchen and The Wharf Kitchen and Bar.

mergency surgery put paid to a special morning tea recently to celebrate Donna Rickard’s

30 years as a nurse at the Raglan veterinary clinic – not that she minds. It was a double dose of best-laid plans going awry as the scrummy spread was to have replaced a workplace barbecue canned because of Covid regulations, but Donna was philosophical about the run of bad luck. “That’s just the way it is,” she told the Chronicle as morning tea-time came and went with key staff still unexpectedly taken up with vital work behind the scenes. “This is a busy practice.”

And the food didn’t go to waste because, as Donna revealed later, “we just nibbled throughout the day”. Donna says her career milestone was a good day at work anyway, with many congratulatory messages and photos of pets she’d tended over the years flooding the clinic’s Facebook page. Dubbed the best “pet lookerafterer” by one and as an inspiration by others, Donna was also lauded on Facebook for having initiated the clinic’s stray animal fund. Following on from her previous work with stray or feral cats, the venture depends entirely on donations from the community. The fund was set up back in 1990 and allows for strays to be

neutered or spayed, as well as vaccinated so they can then be rehomed, Donna explains.

days, thanks in part to modern technology and equipment.

The registered nurse who as a child always wanted to be a vet – forever collecting strays and waifs – ultimately went on to obtain a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing at Wintec after helping former Raglan vet clinic owner Ross Loveridge set up surgical procedures locally.

The practice – now known as Anexa Vets Raglan – was very “farm-dog oriented” back in the day, Donna adds, with dairying so prevalent in the district. Predictably, Donna rates her feline and doggy friends as the best part of the job. “It’s all about the animals.”

Donna says the veterinary industry has changed a lot over three decades. It’s driven now by regulatory standards, and vets are accountable for so much paperwork which “takes away (time) from the animals”.

But losing animals is still the hardest part for her. She’s known the clinic’s clients for so long now – both watching their pets grow up and being there at the end – that the tears come easily when decisions are made.

Surgically however there’s better quality of care and more expertise with small animals these

“The day I lose my empathy and compassion and love for them I’ll retire,” she vows.

ary Ella Stauffer was born at home on October 31st, in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. The eldest of seven children, she is third generation Mennonite, her family originally hailing from Switzerland/Germany area. Many people wonder what the difference is between Mennonites and their close cousins, the Amish. Both stem from the same Christian movement called the Anabaptists, founded in the Netherlands during the European Protestant Reformation in the1500’s. Anabaptists further endorsed a life of simplicity and austerity as they felt the church had strayed from away from these key principles. Their daily practices of faith were based explicitly on the Bible with the emphasis on practice, an ideal that still holds true for both the Amish and Mennonite communities. However, the Mennonites do not eschew all worldly ways and technology whereby the Amish adhere to a stricter code of living life simply. One of the more well known tenets of the Mennonite faith is their aversion to violence. There is a well known association of the Mennonites in the USA as being,’The Quiet in the Land’. As missionaries, they spread

Mary Ella Stauffer works as a nurse at the Raglan Hospital and Rest Home. the word of God in a quiet nonviolent way. While considered somewhat liberal, Mary’s family has a long history of missionary work, her Great Uncle worked at a mission in Africa, an Uncle spent many years in Central and South America. A tradition Mary upholds. Mary has always cherished a strong relationship with God, sometimes not entirely in harmony with her Mennonite faith. As a young person, she was questioned by the Pastor re not wearing her head covering, her Kapp, to Church. She stated, “That God is more interested in what is in my heart rather than how I dress.” After leaving school, Mary opted to go to a non - Mennonite college. This caused some concern amongst the more orthodox members of her family and community, however it led her on the spiritual path she still travels today. She attended Oral Roberts University, an eponymous private evangelical university in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Although already practising as a Nurse, Mary decided to work towards her RN and Masters. During this time, with help from a local church, she had the opportunity to join a mission to India, she instantly

10 | Raglan Chronicle Magazine Issue September2020

fell in love with the people and the culture. It was this trip that inspired her to return one day. Quite how though remained elusive until she became pen pals with a young man of 35yrs of age, Trevor Edgeworth, of Raglan. Remaining true to her unorthodox orthodox ways, after a year and a half of pen-pal writing, she agreed to meet Trevor in Oklahoma. He was enroute back home to India from Japan where he worked for a Christian Not For Profit organisation called Youth with a Mission. Her only previous sighting of Trevor was a well thumbed photograph a friend had, she knew then that, “She could look at this man for the rest of her life…” After a five day whirlwind courtship, Trevor proposed marriage. He felt that their relationship was, “Like crystal glass, it could easily be broken” and they needed to get to know each other more as he was thinking to return to India. He felt very strongly that this was the word of God. So they married in 1993, travelling to Chennai, India the next year after Mary graduated to work as missionaries. Originally Trevor and Mary worked on one of many slum clearance initiatives set up

around Chennai, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Trevor with a background in maintenance... “He’s a fixit man, he really can’t sit still,” helped the inhabitants by rebuilding homes for their families. After many attempts to get the project underway, Trevor realised the only way that it was going to work was to involve the community and work alongside to empower them to improve their lives. Although not a Mennonite, he unwittingly embraced their mode of assistance, Quiet in the Land. The homes, extremely modest by western standards, were one small room to house a family, mamma, pappa, kids and grandparents. Trevor and Mary have two daughters, oldest Esther was born in India and youngest Rebecca in the USA. While working in the slums, Mary saw how poverty affected women and children’s health and decided to do something about it. With the age- old caste system still firmly in hold, it is near impossible for the poorer castes to ever rise above their station. Most vulnerable were the women and girl children. Assisted by the Church and YWAM, Mary set up all she needed to visit clinics in impoverished areas. In some villages, she was the only medical person they saw. She would take off in the morning on her

Equipped with just the basic equipment she was a beacon of hope to the impoverished villagers who were suffering from malnutrition, Guardia and illnesses borne by the worms that infested their undernourished immune-deficient bodies. After 10 years enduring unbearable heat and humidity, Trevor and Mary, with their two daughters, Esther and Rebecca decided to move to Ooti, Udagamandalam, a summer retreat in the mountains, Northern Tamil Nadu. They worked at Hebron Bible School which had 350 students (in what capacity?). Ooty, once a retreat for heat-addled Europeans during the halcyon days of British rule, still enjoys the reputation of a calm, cooler oasis away from the damming heat of the cities. Of all the time Mary spent in India, she enjoyed her time in Ooty most. During the sixteen years she spent in the region, she made lifelong friends, attending weddings and ceremonies usually closed to

westerners. However there was a calling for change. (what made you decide to come to Raglan?) Arriving in Raglan in 2016, Trevor became the maintenance guy (right term?) for Surfside Church, returning to the Church that had first supported him by sponsoring him through Bible Studies. Mary started working at Raglan Rest Home and Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She had hoped to return to her family in Pennsylvania but her girls, Esther and Rebecca were adamant they wanted to continue their lives here. Esther, now married, is a nurse while Rebecca is studying Animal Husbandry at Wintec. Mary muses that Esther stated she was never going to be a nurse, like her mother.

When asked what is the thing you miss most about living in Southern India, Mary is quick to reply… the breakfasts. “Masala Dosa, Poongal (rice porridge with cashews and spices, Sambar curry and Idli’s, little dough cakes for dunking in the Sambar. Not the hot humid weather though, she couldn’t say she missed that one bit.

T

he Local Rag caught up with Rachael Wright to find out more about her new venture ‘Broads’. What is Broads? Broads is a specialty preloved clothing shop with items that are currently for women. It’s made up of quality handpicked and curated pieces that are one-off and a bit unique in some way. I go out, hunt down, wash, dry, iron, de-fluff, collate then try to curate the pieces in some coherent way. But the overall aim is to curate an assortment that are uniquely classic, styley, funky, fun, and affordable. The name “Broads” is about our diversity as woman, I try and find pieces that resonate with that and are intentionally “broad”. A lot of the time I’m inspired by the women around me, who are creative and confident to do style in their own way.

Are you selling just clothing? I pick up all sorts of interesting pieces for styling like a great leather belt that might finish off an outfit, or a funky pair of earrings because sometimes we need just that one special thing. I hunt for unique jewellery, shoes, silk scarfs and bags but I always keep in mind quality and distinction. Describe the ‘Broads’ style. Fun, funky and unique eclectic pieces that are vintage and modern. They can be played down or made as quirky as you like. I try to look for natural fibres for the shape they give and their integrity but I do stock polyester too if it’s a statement piece, and I figure it’s better than being sent to landfill. Raglan is a big influence on the pieces I choose - down to earth, creative, individualistic, a bit quirky boho with a penchant for dress-up… my fave!

Why have you created this business - what’s the drive behind it? It’s about finding pieces and style as a reflection of our individuality and that make us feel good. Shopping preloved is such a great way to experiment with styling, therefore I keep the range varied. It’s affordable too so it means being able to buy a range of pieces that can be incorporated into and change up an existing wardrobe. Discovering great pre-loved items that speak to you can feel quite cathartic…something sparks when you find that one item that’s waiting just for you. I have a real passion for vintage so I’m selling the idea of reverence and integrity in our purchasing choices that deserve a continued life. Pieces become talking points too about our history, as well as its design aspects. Purchasing in this way has a lesser impact

am really excited to have started my new venture Mary Ethical Clothing which is an online women’s clothing store. My middle name is Mary.

It was really sad to close our Scintilla store in March this year which is the label my sister and I have had for 18 years. After a long time in the fashion industry it has been time to simplify and go back to how I started. Buying beautiful ethically made fabric, hand cutting all the clothes myself and getting them sewn by a local seamstress Teena. Mary is about natural fibres that breathe, flattering timeless styles that can be dressed up or down. Earthy colours teamed with beautiful prints. I am committed to using sustainable practices and ensure high quality garments that will last for years while keeping the prices affordable. I have been lucky enough to use local women to help me get the project done so a big shout out to Choroni Design Ltd for the logo, Molly McCabe for the photography and the wonderful model Nina Du Niak. Also my son Leo Oliver for building the website. It is amazing how many talented people we have in our community and when you need them they are just there. www.maryclothing.co.nz

As a Trust Board Member, you will work alongside our local Hapū representatives to oversee and support the implementation of the aspirations and projects documented in the Raglan Naturally Community Plan.

If you are interested in becoming a Raglan Naturally Trust Board Member, or you know someone who might be perfect to represent our Raglan community, please visit http://www.raglannaturally. co.nz to find out more and apply.

Nominations for Trust Board Members are now open and will close on the 18th of September. Successful applicants will be interviewed on 3rd October.

Furtheron, Focus Groups were established to review each section of the Plan and create updated Snapshots to ensure everyone’s voice was heard. These Focus Groups gathered vital information regarding where the different areas of our community were at, where we want to be and acknowledge what we already have.

Coordinators were held and it was agreed that the best way forward was to establish an official Raglan Naturally Organisation to continue the community-led development and support the implementation of the plan, the projects and the aspirations laid out within it.

T

he journey of Raglan Naturally is one that started almost 20 years ago, in 2001, when a small group

of Raglan residents committed time and energy to ensure the voice of Raglan would be heard for many years to come. Through their work and commitment, community

together to create a vision for Raglan–a Community Plan that contained our future goals and aspirations. In 2016, the Raglan Community Board held a celebration for Raglan Naturally to review what had been accomplished since the plan’s inception and announce the revitalisation of the plan. The Raglan Naturally Committee was established, a Project Coordinator was appointed,

consultations

and workshops were held–including Treaty of Waitangi workshops for the community to learn and engage with Treaty Principles.

The Snapshots and all of the community feedback were reviewed and diligently collated and analysed, and in February 2020 a new version of the Raglan Naturally Community Plan was finalised. Five goals for the new plan were also identified throughout the review– building foundations, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi and partnership with Iwi and Hapū, being future focused, improving connection between community and councils, and keeping Raglan Naturally alive and effective. At the end of 2019, three facilitated workshops with the RN Focus Group

ver the years I’ve visited many homes in Raglan and most often it’s not just the view I admire. The common aesthetic is that the emphasis is homely, eclectic and creative.

It seems that we in Raglan personalize our home abodes with all that represents us without necessarily buying too heavily into global trends. I’m not saying we are not on trend and contemporary rather that we are more individual with a focus on creating our own vibe without keeping up or blowing budgets. Even if we are going big - perhaps we are generally more aware of our impact on the environment and the use of natural, sustainable products.

In Raglan we have a wealth of local businesses able to enhance our home and outdoor environments who hold similar values. We are excited to bring you the new HOME feature in the Local Rag that will continue to showcase the local businesses that can shape our future homes or add to our existing pad. abinet have been servicing Raglan for the last 12 years in all aspects of cabinet making, residential and commercial fit outs, kitchens, bathrooms and custom furniture. Wood is such a fantastic versatile resource, I get such a kick out of taking ideas and a lump of timber and turning it into something beautiful that people can use and enjoy for years and years. This year we’ve started a retail end Ministry of Wood, selling furniture and timber products through Wabi Sabi Studio, it’s been great dealing directly with the public, seeing people get excited about our furniture and taking home something they love as much as we do. We’ve also signed up for the Raglan Arts Weekend for the first time this year and will be showing our work in our new showroom in Te Mata at Labour weekend. ong time local Murray Hartley who works in landscape and film set construction and his partner Lorraine have developed word of mouth plant sales to clients into a busy little online retail business. Last weekend saw an overwhelming response to their first Pop Up plant shop in Raglan. Murray is well known for his green fingers in both his edible and picturesque gardens. He and Lorraine share an enthusiasm for tropical plants, palms and indoor plants which they propagate and grow on for staging and to sell. Everyone wants to bring the outdoors in purifying their home and office air making calm relaxing spaces. Large and interesting plants are becoming affordable live art for private and commercial spaces in home or set staging. Plants make us feel good. Murray and Lorraine also source plants for landscape design and update their changing flow of indoor plants on their FB page ‘Raglan Happy Gardener’ weekly. They will be a Pop Up regularly and are downtown This Sunday with their plants, accessories and advice following last weeks success.

COM M UNITY Te Mata School:

LJHooker Raglan have recently jumped on board to sponsor the Te Mata School Chronicle Features.

Greig Metcalfe Principal Officer

Kia Ora Raglan

I have to say it has been a pleasure once again to see the continuation of visitors to Raglan and the happy smiling faces of all. July and August are traditionally the quietest time for sales in New Zealand and in the past say 6-12 years ago we have gone without a single sale over this time. These figures from past era of local sales legend like Margaret Kerapa, Jackie Paterson and our own legend Chrissy Cox - now in her 25th year of Raglan real estate sales. But we are not in traditional times and I am not sure if we ever will be again. This July saw the strongest month for sales for at least the past 12 months – 14

sales in residential, 4 sections and 4 lifestyle blocks.

there waiting for the next property to come to market.

Much of this was catchup for the lack of sales of March and April. This period saw the sellers already on the market go on hold and those looking to come to the market also hold to see what the market did post Covid-19.

Good to see Rangitahi looking so great and new residents looking to get there homes under way.

Once we saw that the market was positive we saw those already on the market selling and those looking to sell decide to commit to sale. This brought a small purge in listings most of which have sold in July and thus the very positive sale numbers.

So what of the future – well frankly for Raglan I can only see more of the same – in that we have a small market place with limited sales stock and demand out stripped supply, interest rates plummeting, returned and overseas Kiwi’s buying online and lastly our nearby neighbours (Auckland Waikato and now the Bay of Plenty) all staying home and buying in there bubble.

It does look like August did settle back a touch mainly driven by listings having reduced – there are still lots of cashed up buyers out

Thank you on behalf or Chissy, Kyle, Stephen and Michell and Robbie for your continued support we appreciate you every day.

We are proud to support Te Mata School and sponsor this year’s Chronicle articles and we hope this year is a fantastic learning journey for you all. Good luck for the future and remember to ‘Be the best you can Be’ All the best from Greig, Tash, Kyle, Steve, Michelle, Chrissy, Graham, Teresa, Matt, Chris & Tracie.

R ENTA LS Rents Surge – again supply and demand here is the strongest force although in some cases healthy home requirements has forced some of Raglans older homes from the permanent rental market. Some of these have sold and some gone to the holiday home sector were the healthy home requirements do not directly apply. On average we have seen rents lift $50 - $100 pw.
