and then more writing is done, and we kind of like the direction each new song takes, and now Naomi Tuao we have a collection of songs on the shelf...so we are going through a "selection phase" to choose the new tunes for the new album "Rock My Soul". Hopefully we can release it before we go to Europe then come back and tour NZ. What song never fails to get you on the dance floor? Could you be loved (Bob Marley) or Whole lotta love (Led Zeppelin). Best piece of advice ever given? "Always communicate and resolve an issue with your partner, always, always communicate, then resolve it." My mum said that to me when I was 16. I think it works. Best travelling experience? I love to travel......hmm there have been many great memories, travelling with Bri and the kids always, and travelling with the CSR whanau, and of course when me and Bri travelled round Aotearoa and Aussie for about 4 years in the nineties. Four dream dinner party guests, living or dead? My dad, my sister Maryann and Bri. If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself? I dont know about frivlious but if I had no problem with money I would buy Monsanto and close the cooporation down. In another life what career would you have? Green medicine healer. Best talent to come out of NZ lately? Music talent?.....Te Omeka Perkins, House of Shem. He's got some killa new tunes. Where can we hear you play next? http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla In Raglan?....Hoping to do a gig in winter before we go overseas. Our next tour is in April/May in Aussie around the east coast.

Unsung hero made elderly folks’mealtimes fun for three decades

B

etty Sutton – a Raglan resident of 66 years – reckons she made her own fun during three decades of delivering Meals on Wheels around town. She’d crack a joke and bring her sometimes naughty sense of humour to the job, and is unconcerned at getting nothing more out of the volunteer role than appreciation from the elderly folk she’s visited over the years. “I enjoyed it,” she told the Chronicle last week of her regular Monday routine up until last September, when a malignant lump needing medical attention put an end to things. Getting out and meeting people – and knowing she was doing a good deed – brought satisfaction enough, says Betty, who’s soon to become an octogenarian herself. For the past five years or so Betty’s done the job with close friend and neighbour Marge Norton who, now 83, has given a good 18 years’ service delivering Meals on Wheels. They shared a car, adds Betty. “I was the runner, Marge did the driving.” Every Monday morning at 11.30 the pair would head up to Raglan Trust Hospital and Rest Home to pick up and deliver the lunchtime meals around town. The farthest they went was out to the spaceship house at Ocean Beach where late sea captain Peter Farrell lived. His meals were one of half a dozen or so delivered daily in recent times to housebound locals unable – through illness or old age – to cook for themselves. There can be up to nine deliveries at any one time, says Betty, or as few as two. But back when she started in 1983 volunteers would deliver 28-30 meals each day, she recalls, all prepared and despatched from the trust hospital as they are today. “It’s a good service.”

,

Good Samaritans: Betty Sutton, left, and Marge Norton reminisce in Betty's John Street garden. While Betty’s no attention-seeker, she is proud of an award she received unexpectedly six years ago for “faithful service” to St Peter’s Anglican Church from then Bishop of Waikato David Moxon. The letter of recognition – which Betty has had framed – commends her “for all you have done for this parish” over the years. Just a short walk from her home unit on John Street, the small stucco building she calls “my church” is where Betty was married, confirmed, had her kids baptised and was generally recognised for doing things “correctly”. She came to town as a young teen with

her parents and four siblings. The family settled in Point Street, where Betty was to stay for 51 years. She has fond memories during that time of doing a postie run on a push-bike, cycling Raglan’s hills on gravel roads. “It was a good run,” she says. “And I’ve still got my whistle.” Betty’s still active and loves getting out in the garden. She and Marge reckon there’s no place like Raglan with its great community spirit. “Wouldn’t want to live anywhere else,” they chime after posing in Betty’s garden for a Chronicle photo. Edith Symes

Waikato District Council Speed Limit Bylaw 2011.

Angela Massey and guests at her red carpet event

F then last week local teacher-turnedirst she created a web of intrigue,

trader Angela Massey revealed in flamboyant fashion the new name of her shop downtown as Katipo.

“It’s the red back spider native to New Zealand,” she explained on Facebook the day after her red carpet event in Volcom Lane to mark the rebranding of the former

Husk shop. “The colours for my shop are RED, black and white,” she added. Various possible names had been bandied about on Facebook but in the end Angela went with something reflecting the fact the shop – which has been closed most of this week for repainting and restocking – will be specialising in quality New Zealand merchandise when it reopens this weekend. Council has received 16 proposed amendments to the current bylaw and will now undertake a 20-working day public consultation beginning Monday 24 February. Detailed plans and maps showing the proposed changes to existing speed limits, and an online submission form, are available on Council’s website, www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz. Hard copy submission forms are also available at Council libraries and offices around the district. Please note - submissions should only include feedback on the proposed amendments indicated on the index page and supporting maps. Residents wanting to request a speed limit review in other areas will have an opportunity to do so at a later date and the public will be advised at the appropriate stage. All submissions must reach Council by 4pm on Friday 21 March and will be presented at April’s Policy and Regulatory committee hearing.

he Rip Curl Pro presented by Jagermeister is set to kick off at Manu Bay, Raglan this week (Friday 14th – Sunday 16th March), New Zealand’s richest domestic surfing event.

The country’s best surfers will be anticipating a return to Manu Bay after the last two years have seen the event relocated to Ruapuke Beach south of Raglan for the $12,000 six-star rated event. Last year the relocation was met with what many described as the best waves an event has witnessed in New Zealand, perfect 1.5m – 2.0m A-frame peaks. This year’s edition of the event will be held in memory of Craig Hughes, Raglan local and one of New Zealand’s most celebrated shapers who passed away in 2013. The event will also feature a visit from Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour surfer Owen Wright (Aus) and extour surfer Taylor Knox (USA). Three time event champion (2008, 2009, 2011), Billy Stairmand of Raglan, is fresh back from competing in Australia where a good run of results has elevated him to 8th on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Qualifying Series. Absent from the event for the past two years, Stairmand is keen to compete in home waters again and shoot for four titles. Ben Kennings/Surfing NZ

Judith Collins reckons when she gets to Wellington in a month or so she’ll “join two or three things” and before long will feel part of the community – just like when she came to live in Raglan 15 years ago.

Judith, who among her work in the community has been the Chronicle’s proofreader/subeditor for the past eight years, is aiming to settle in Island Bay or thereabouts because it’s like a village, she says. “It’s like Raglan in scale.” Wellington’s southern coast may be quite wild and exposed but that doesn’t bother Judith who’s of stoic Scottish heritage. “It’s more important to me to be able to sniff the sea,” she says of her new destination. Which is one of the reasons Judith came to Raglan in the first place. That and the fact she had fond memories of holidaying here back in the ’70s when the town was “very Raglan”, the lifestyle “very simple”. She and her then young family had a tumble-down bach by the wharf for a few years, on a “fabulous” section which was later sub-divided into about three sections. The bach had no plumbing, she recalls, the “night cart” being used instead of a flush toilet. But now Judith’s moving on. “I know without question this is what I need to do,” she told the Chronicle from her recently sold Norrie Avenue home which has a distant view of kids

couple of years ago and with family having moved away over time has become a bit isolated. She’s going to a more central location with better access to her six children “scattered” over the North and South Islands. But through myriad involvements in the Raglan community she feels she knows a huge cross-section of the locals and that it’s been the perfect place to be since retiring. She’s had so many voluntary jobs, she explains, “it’s kind of kept me going”. Besides her week in, week out backstop role for the Chronicle – she comes from a background of educational writing for the Diocesan magazine – Judith has also been very involved in the administration of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Parish and the setting up of its children’s programme, Catholickidz, which with 21 protégés spills over three rooms of the church on the corner of James and Wallis Streets. Then there’s her work with the Raglan Community Arts Council and her involvement with the Old School Arts Centre in Stewart Street and The Clay Shed behind. As an arts lover she confesses to liking the prospect of going to galleries and concerts when she moves to Wellington, Island Bay being on a direct bus route for which she can use her gold card. There’s another Judith Collins based in Wellington of course, and Judith admits having a certain controversial cabinet minister as a namesake has prompted a few questions over the years,

Chronicle subeditor and community stalwart Judith Collins particularly as she also does a bit of communications work for the Green party. “Otherwise we have nothing in common.” Judith’s just had her last of several garage sales before moving out in less than a fortnight. The sale of her house happened within a month – more quickly than she’d expected – and now she feels a bit rushed. Shrinking treasured possessions by about a half has necessitated umpteen trips to Xtreme Waste’s recycle

Lively airing of views on town square plan

ADVENTURE RACING COROMANDEL will be staging an Adventure event on 15th March 2014. Competitors will be Trekking, Mountain Biking and Kayaking in the Raglan and Pirongia areas throughout the day and into the night. They will be using public walking tracks and public roads in the area.

Artists impression of proposed 'town square' which includes boat planters, bridge, painted piano and outdoor chess

W

hen the public gallery’s near full at a Raglan Community Board meeting it’s a sure-fire sign something people feel passionate about’s up for debate. Oddly enough, while the David Engwicht workshop which came up with the idea of a town square was on the agenda at Tuesday’s March meeting, board chair Linda Cole pointed out to bemused residents it was not there “as a discussion item”. That despite reference to the apparent existence of a chief executive’s report and a staff recommendation the elusive report should be received. But that was no matter – as it turned out – because the town square project got a thorough and lively airing anyway in the public forum preceding the meeting, with those in enthusiastic support of the so-called community-led initiative appearing to hold sway over the critics. Praise for the project flowed thick and fast at first. The Chamber of Commerce’s Dave

Currie said businesses thought the plan was fantastic – also marvelling at the 2000 hits it had received on Facebook – and businesswoman Lisa Thomson labelled the project awesome and “a great opportunity for our town”. Board member Jon Taylor said emergency services were “fine” with the traffic restrictions and that people liked the idea of trying something new downtown. And so it went until retired board member Barry Ashby mentioned concern that restricting traffic access would create “huge difficulties”. And then current member Matt Holl chimed in with his belief that any town square needed to be part of a bigger picture that also looked at issues such as whether Cliff Street should become one-way, whether the CBD zone should be expanded and how to deal with parking shortages downtown. Former board chair Peter Storey agreed any town square “needs to be part of the bigger plan”, and warned that momentum in completing a series of “place making” projects about town would be lost if the very first project was one likely to alienate locals. He

was also concerned the town square plan had not been put out to full consultation. Colin Hodkinson – husband of the Community House’s Chrissy Hodkinson but speaking as a concerned resident – had the final say, warning that “if the naysayers are always taking precautions nothing will ever happen”. “Those of us trying to get things going are not all morons … to suggest we don’t do anything until we have a major plan is dumb.” With the public forum having run about five minutes over time, Linda Cole – who’s known to have raised with council management a raft of concerns over aspects of the project but also to insist she isn’t opposed to a town square – declared the formal meeting open and much of the gallery emptied out. Meantime David Engwicht is understood to be due back in town in a few weeks to check on progress, which may well depend on how quickly – or if at all – a district council “roading team” is able to sign off the project from an engineering perspective. Kayak-loader inventor happy to shell out at creative market

R

aglan West resident Fiona McNabb didn’t mind having to give away “three lots of $20” at last Sunday’s creative market because the challenge she offered – to lift a kayak without assistance onto the roof of a car in 15 seconds – created interest in a novel invention of hers. The Solotec loader’s a device designed to allow just one person, male or female, to get kayaks and standup paddleboards up onto any car roof with ease. Despite her diminutive frame, Fiona reckons she can do it herself now in about Advertorial 12 seconds by using the compact aluminium and plastic device, which has taken two years and four or five re-tests to get to its current “working prototype” stage of development. But when three fit 20-something male market-goers managed the feat within the given time – without the Solotec loader – she wasn’t at all fazed. They all struggled and agreed it’s not something they’d want to do by themselves regularly, which Fiona says proves her point that the Solotec loader is exactly what’s needed out there in the marketplace. And not only for people in their prime but also for sportswomen like herself who are possibly twice their age. Fiona’s invention – worked out with Auckland-based design company Procreate, which has done the detailed CAD modelling – is not only practical but also 100 percent recyclable, right down to the packaging and printing.

Fiona gets leverage for her Solotec loader at Sunday's creative market at the Old School. She’s consulted along the way with local recycling gurus Rick Thorpe and Simon Thomson, who’ve provided product material specifications. Fiona, who has a passion for protecting the natural environment, insists the business will be run on a zero waste philosophy and assessed for carbon zero accreditation. But right now she’s about to launch her product with Kickstarter – a crowdfunding platform which brings creative projects to life – as she looks to secure funding for the manufacturing tools and to get the Solotec loader to market. She’ll also repeat the same “awarenessraising” exercise at next month’s creative market, but before that is off to Anakiwa in

the Marlborough Sounds to demonstrate the loader at the Kiwi Association of Sea Kayakers (KASK) annual forum. The goal is to deliver a “novel, light, extremely easy to use accessory” which adapts to fit any roof rack regardless of type or car model, Fiona explains, and allows a kayak to be loaded easily without risk of injury to body or vehicle. And her driving motivation? She dropped her own kayak while struggling to load it on the car roof one day, scratching the paintwork in the process, and felt there had to be a better way. Luckily she’d “always been interested in creative, innovative problem-solving and design”, and the Solotec loader developed from there. Edith Symes

R

aglan’s second Pink Fun Run/Walk around the three bridges is set for Saturday week and local organiser Ruth Jowers wants more home baking donated to sell on the day. She says the home-made goodies along with the raffle basket filled by local businesses were the best drawcards at last year’s fundraising event, which raised just over $600 for the Waikato Breast Cancer Trust. And while that was a “good start” for the inaugural event – which attracted 50 entrants – she hopes this year to raise still more funds for the charitable trust’s work in breast cancer diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Ruth lost her own mum to the disease two years ago, and organising the fun run is her way of acknowledging the trust for its efforts in research and education. Participants are encouraged to wear pink – “the more eye-catching the outfit the better”, says Ruth. There’ll be a prize for the best dressed and, this year, a two-night stay is on offer at Myrtle’s View in Greenslade Road for first across the finish line at the boatramp by Kopua domain. Not that the emphasis is on winning, adds Ruth. It’s a casual, family-friendly event and parents can run or walk the two-kilometre course with kids in push-chairs if they like. “It’s about being part of something that will make a difference.” The Maori Wardens have again volunteered their help with controlling traffic and directing participants. The fun run/walk begins at 11am, Saturday March 22, at the boat ramp. Gold coin entry fee. And for home baking or other support email ruth.mark@farmside.co.nz or ph 825 5274.

Message on the beach for miners

O '14), "Let's Face It" Visual Petition n Maui's Dolphin Day (2 March

campaign coordinator Peggy Oki arranged "Stand Up & Be Counted 2", a massive human Maui's Dolphin formed from nearly 250 people, including an important message.

Nautical Lovers Anonymous provided the banner, previously seen on the Raglan Wharf silos, stating "NO SEABED MINING" as our message to the New Zealand government. Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM) are attending hearings this month to protect the ocean habitat of the LAST 54 (or less!!) Maui's Dolphins of NZ. To follow and make a contribution to KASM, please visit: www. kasm.org.nz. Many thanks to Aeronavics Ltd for again donating their service with amazing remote controlled "copter" flying machines for the aerial photograph. Thanks also to Whaingaroa Environment Centre (WEC) for hosting another great Maui's Dolphin Day, and to our volunteers and everyone for coming out to be a part of our Maui's Dolphins' message. For anyone wishing to order a poster of "Stand Up & Be Counted 2", please inquire at WEC by the end of this month. Peggy Oki

follows in the footsteps of Gareth Hughes (deep sea drilling and mining) and Eugenie Sage (RMA) to talk about policies that touch every person and all age groups. A former Chief Executive of the West Coast District Health Board and former Executive Director of the Aids Foundation, Kevin Hague wants to talk about the following issues: • How to prevent illness in the first place • How to ensure every New Zealander has access to the health care they need • How to afford the health services we need in the future • How to ensure we have the health workforce we need. These questions form the agenda for Kevin’s nationwide ‘Health Tour’. The invitation to bring the tour to Raglan is another spinoff from the local Green party’s unique ‘green dinner’ initiative, where issues of interest are aired over an informal pot-luck meal, and follow-up ideas put into practice. Hence the very well attended meetings with the 3 MPs.

You can recover from depression

T Charlotte

he recent media coverage of Dawson’s death by suicide has seen much comment in the media and not all of it has been helpful. Of particular concern is the inference that Charlotte committed suicide because she suffered from depression. It is important to remember that only half of those who commit suicide are suffering from a depressive illness. Depression is one of the most common forms of mental illness. In New Zealand, one in five women and one in 10 men will experience depression at some point in their lives. The Mental Health Foundation is highlighting depression to show that recovery is possible. You may have heard that medication and counselling are among the treatment options available, but there are also many self-help strategies you can employ to help you begin to feel better. Depression affects men and women of all ages, races and economic groups and is not something you can just 'snap out of. People who experience depression do get better. You can recover from and learn to manage depression. Listening to others who have been in your shoes can also be a tremendous help so
