Roses and Peonies and I love stealing fresh foliage from friends gardens. What flower has the best scent? Very hard to pick a best scent, but it would have to be spring bulbs, with ‘Early Cheer’ especially always putting a smile on my face with its intoxicating fragrance, signalling an end to winter. Best thing about being a floral designer? I get to work with a beautiful product and create arrangements for significant memories in people’s lives. Flowers are loves finest language. Daniel Kereopa is fully engaged in the battle for The Ultimate Waterman title this week

D

aniel Kereopa’s skills as a waterman are being affirmed as world-class as he enters the battle for The Ultimate Waterman title this week. The Ultimate Waterman event was the brainchild of Surfing New Zealand chief executive Greg Townsend and involved eight hand-picked watermen competing in six different disciplines over eight days. Daniel – a multi-title surfer and waterman from Raglan and New Zealand’s sole competitor in the event - finished fourth in the shortboard discipline and fifth in the waka ama discipline at the start of the week. “For me it’s a personal achievement, that I can compete against these guys and do really well against them,” Daniel said. The inaugural event had attracted some of the biggest names in the watersports world including stand-up paddle champions Kai Lenny and Connor Baxter (both

Hawaiian), Tahiti’s legendary big wave surfer and paddler Manoa Drollet, world champion big wave surfer Mark Visser (Australia) and Danny Ching (USA). Daniel said the competitors were “just like good mates” and it was amazing to be standing alongside these wellknown watermen. “We just have a mutual understanding of the ocean and what this contest is all about.” Professional OC1 canoe racer Danny Ching was first in Saturday’s 17km waka ama endurance race that finished at Auckland’s Takapuna Beach. It was a close race with multi-title winning paddler Georges Cronsteadt (Tahiti), coming in just 18 seconds later. Both athletes nominated waka ama as their top discipline from the six, meaning they gained double points. Daniel said he had a lot of fun in the waka ama race and had been coming third, but then made a navigational error: “That’s the gamble that you take.” The shortboard competition, held

in northern Coromandel in the wake of Cyclone Pam, was won by Monoa Drollet, with second place going to Mark Visser, while Daniel “did his best” on a borrowed board, with a cut lip. Both Manoa and Mark had chosen shortboarding as their ‘double whammy’ point discipline. Daniel’s chosen top discipline was longboard surfing, which would probably be held somewhere in the southern part of the South Island, where the athletes went on Tuesday for a few days’ of competition. Part of the event concept was to travel around New Zealand to the best conditions available for each discipline. The Ultimate Waterman challenge wrapped up this Saturday at Auckland’s Mission Bay with the stand-up paddle endurance race, which would be held alongside open paddleboard races. The overall winner of all six disciplines would then be crowned The Ultimate Waterman and would hold the title until the next competition in 2016. Rachel Benn

Horse trek proves successful for Waitetuna T on its own special rural strengths

he Waitetuna community drew

when it planned a major fundraiser to pay for another teacher at the local school. After months of drought, the first Waitetuna School Fundraising Trek was held recently between showers of rain. But it worked out fine, said Lisa Pepper, one of the organisers, as the weather came right during the actual treks and the 53 riders on the Saturday and the 40-plus riders on the Sunday all had fun. “Everyone was absolutely rapped.

Everyone’s coming back,” Lisa said. Members of the community and parents from the school planned the trek back in December, advertising the event through the local and equestrian communities and through social media. A marquee was erected opposite the school on Liz and Shamus Macdonald’s property, where organisers served meals and held a social get-together on the Saturday night. “When it [the rain] did come down, we were all hanging on to a pole,” Lisa laughed. The riders and the local guides started at the Macdonald property on the Saturday,

then passed through the Ormond property to skirt around the back of the Te Uku wind turbines. Twenty-three riders and their horses stayed overnight in the paddock. Then on Sunday, the riders took a different route to the wind turbines. Riders were treated to views of Aotea and Raglan harbours, with different route options available to those riding. It was a successful fundraising event that raised several thousand dollars for the three-class school. “It’s enabling our children to have a better education,” Lisa said. Rachel Benn

Teenage netballer off to world champs R

aglan teenager Searn Tahere is going places – to the World Indoor Netball Championships in Perth, in fact. Searn, 16, has been selected as a New Zealand representative for the Women’s Under-17 team to play in the 10-day tournament in July. The Year 12 Raglan Area School student only started playing the game about four years ago, but growing up in a netball-mad family meant it was almost pre-destined. Her mum, Haven, played in the national champs when she was younger, and her brother Jordan received the Most Valuable Player award for New Zealand netball in 2012. They also played together in a national team with dad, Junior, and had a family social team. “It’s just the one sport we love,” Searn said about indoor netball. “I always told them [the family] I’d make it… I trained and trained and trained to get there.” Indoor netball was different from the outdoor sport in many ways: in indoor there were only six players, including two centres who were allowed to shoot, and slightly smaller courts that were netted so the ball could be played off the net. Searn, who played centre, said it was faster game than outdoor netball and was more of a mixed sport. Making the national team was “a long and scary process”. Even after being selected, Searn was not sure if she would be able to get to the world champs because of the $3900 involved. So now Searn was busy fundraising, with the help of her family and the school,

4 RAGLAN Chronicle

to make it happen. She was willing to do almost anything to achieve her dream – odd jobs, babysitting, running raffles, running a school disco Searn Tahere and selling food. The school was supportive also. “Searn’s just such a cool student. We just want to see her succeed,” said Joseph Rao, RAS head of social sciences. In the meantime, Searn was busy training, playing a variety of sports at school to keep fit and playing for her InZone Club in Hamilton. She had also just returned from the national indoor championships in Wellington where she played for the Inzone Under-19 team. “I want to be a permanent national rep, like a Silver Fern sort of player. That would be cool,” Searn said. “I love netball.” Rachel Benn If you would like to help Searn in her bid to raise $3900 to go to the World Indoor Netball Championships, either through a donation or the offer of paid work, contact Joseph Rao at Raglan Area School on 825-8140 or email: joseph_ rao@raglanarea.school.nz

Policing and parking raised at meeting P parking were two hot topics olicing at New Year and

at the last Raglan Community Board meeting.

Senior Sergeant Gillian Meadows replied to concerns raised at the previous board meeting about police staffing levels in Raglan over the busy New Year period. Raglan had had four extra police at New Year in addition to those already on duty, and there were no major incidents. She said the number of police needed at New Year was difficult to calculate, as police never knew in advance where trouble could erupt. However, board deputy chair Matt Holl challenged Ms Meadows, saying: “New Year in Hamilton – it [the population] clears out. It’s your beaches that are your trouble spots, history tells us”. He said there were concerns that Raglan would get out of control at New Year, like Whangamata had in past years. Councillor Clint Baddeley said police had not resolved the issue of Raglan’s liquor ban, which was widely breached over the holiday period, with a lack of police to enforce it. “We have a liquor ban and you put your police in a position where they couldn’t enforce it,” he said. “I believe you put some of your police in jeopardy that (New Year) night.” Ms Meadows said planning had already begun on staffing at New Year, so police could be “a little better

prepared in 2015”. Raglan Chamber of Commerce’s Charlie Young presented a letter to the board from the chamber about parking in the town, based on a survey of its members. He said the different parking times in town – some 60-minute and some 120-minute – were confusing for people so the chamber asked for consistency. A sign directing people to the extra parking in James Street would be useful too. The chamber also asked for a balance between regular parks and those for boat users at the wharf, as parking there had created a safety issue. Charlie said it had carried out a similar survey of its members a couple of years ago and the same issues had been raised then. Some members were now keen to be on a working party to address these issues. Councillor Baddeley said some of the chamber’s concerns could easily be addressed, but the reason for the 60-minute parks was for turnover, and parking at the wharf was always going to be a difficult issue. Matt Holl said Raglan needed some 15-minute parks for local people making quick stops. Two-hour parking should be on the periphery of town, but other parks could become two-hour parks after hours. Barry Ashby suggested the way to solve the town’s parking problems was to block the main street through town to traffic: “I think it’s high time we looked at turning Raglan into a pedestrian way”. In Brief:

Community Board Meeeting The following matters also came up at the Raglan Community Board meeting last week: • Alan Vink was made the new chair of the Raglan Community Board, following the resignation of former chair Linda Cole. Matt Holl was the new deputy chair. The board was now looking for two new members to join their ranks, as board member Jon Taylor had moved to Nelson. • The board awarded $3000 from its discretionary fund to St Peter’s Church to help towards the $17,000 cost of restoring two Crittall windows. The Raglan Community House was also given $500 towards the running of a Tuesday transport service, which was predominantly used to help elderly in outlying areas access services in town. • The Waikato District Council’s review of gambling and alcohol bylaws has resulted in a ban on any new gambling venues or wholesale liquor outlets being established in the region, Councillor Clint Baddeley reported. • Board member Bob MacLeod has been appointed the board’s representative to help advance Raglan’s civil defence plan. • Alan Vink has been attending meetings with local people concerned about water and wastewater quality and said he was keen to pursue this matter further. • Every household in the region was due to receive a summary of the Waikato District Council Draft Long-Term Plan 2015-2025 soon. It would also be available on the council website: www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz Rachel Benn

Further vacancy for Raglan Community Board by-election As a result of the recent resignation of a second member of the Raglan Community Board, a further extraordinary vacancy has occurred. As such, the by-election originally scheduled to occur on Friday 15 May 2015, will now take place on Friday 5 June 2015 by postal ballot for two members of the Raglan Community Board. As a result of the second extraordinary vacancy, the nomination period for the Raglan Community Board by-election has been extended and now closes at noon, Thursday 9 April 2015. Nomination papers are available from: WDC Raglan Office, 7 Bow Street, Raglan. For more information please contact: the Electoral Office - 0800 922 822.

Raglan’s West Coast Health Clinic has won boasting rights as the best rural general practice team in the country. The practice won the competition to find the best rural general practice team in New Zealand, run for the first time by the Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand (RHAANZ). One of the practice’s patients, Sharon Tribe, nominated the practice, which she says is an “outstanding example” of a rural general practice. The fact the practice is actively involved in the community forming collaborative relationships with a wide cross section of community organisations and health providers was

seen as significant by Mrs Tribe. As an example, one of the practice’s GPs and co-owners, Fiona Bolden, is a founding member of the Raglan Suicide Prevention and Awareness Group. Practice manager Michelle Meenagh says the practice staff do a lot of voluntary work in the community. “We are absolutely chuffed to get the award, but the team here works so tirelessly in the community.” One of the receptionists, Debbie Phillips-Morgan, is a volunteer surf lifesaver while another of the receptionists, Carol Millar, is a volunteer ambulance driver. Four of the practice’s five nurses participate in the PRIME schedule. Liane Topham-Kindley - Reprinted with permission from NZ Doctor

Te Uku School seniors taking on Herbal Dispensary: Injury tips a new challenge I n light of a recent accident I had, this week’s article will be about how to help yourself recover from muscularskeletal injuries as quickly as possible.

A

chance to take part in sea kayaking, rock climbing, tramping and orienteering is a reality for pupils from Te Uku School as they take part in the William Pike Challenge Award (WPCA) this year. The WPCA provides intermediate and full primary schools with support, resources and motivation to facilitate education outside of the classroom. The WPCA is an outdoor activity-based programme run over one school year where students participate in 8 outdoor activities, 20 hours of community service and personally develop a new sport or hobby in order to gain the award. William knows firsthand the value of being prepared for facing obstacles. He was one of two young climbers caught in a volcanic eruption on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, on the evening of 25 September 2007. Pike suffered numerous life threatening injuries, and as a result, his right leg was amputated below the knee, needing extensive recovery and rehabilitation. By adopting a positive attitude and moving on with the support of his family and friends, William was once again, able to embrace his love of the outdoors and develop the WPCA award, which he now passes on to a new generation of

Te Uku School senior class is looking forward to the William Pike Challenge Kiwi kids. “I’m really excited to be working with students from Te Uku School - the first in their region to participate in the WPCA” says William. This year Te Uku School will be joining 48 schools and 1100 other students participating in the WPCA, giving these students a huge range of opportunities to connect with local people and places in their community. At the recent Maui Dolphin day year 7 and 8 Te Uku students ran a stall as part of the community service component of the award. The children made fudge and organised competitions for their fundraising stall where the

proceeds were put towards saving the endangered Maui Dolphin. “This is Te Uku School’s first year being involved in the WPCA and we think that the physical and mental challenges that it will offer will provide great life-long learning opportunities for our senior students” says Rachel Allan, principal of Te Uku school. “We think that William’s personal experiences make him an inspirational and influential role model worthy of being associated with. This should be a fun-filled and successful year of learning for our senior students”. Rachel Allen

Smokem Raglan judges confirmed The Fishing Section of the Raglan Club are pleased to announce that judges for ‘Smokem Raglan’ on Easter Sunday the 5th April are Colin Chung, Clint Baddeley and Ralph Blanchard. Julie Hanna is away and regrets that she is unable to attend this year. A replacement has come forward - she is a foodie, will not be swayed in what she likes or dislikes and like Julie will bring a lot of her personality to this annual event. All will be revealed on the

evening. As for Julie? She will be back in 2016. For Colin, Clint and Ralph this is their third ‘Smokem Raglan’ and they have in the past done a great job judging exactly what is required to get that ultimate smoked fish. Again this year we expect to see many local fish smoking reputations at stake. It is about getting it right on that day. The balance of the salt, spices, herbs, sweetener, colour, crispness and looks. It is a big challenge! There are prizes valued up to $500 on the evening.

GOD IS REAL! HERE’S MY STORY

Bearing in mind that injuries usually occur to teach us a lesson… often to slow down and pay attention to some areas of our life that we are avoiding! Treatment: RICE: rest, ice, compression and elevation still remains to be the initial treatment for all injuries. Traumeel is fixed combination of biological and marine extracts and is very effective in treating the symptoms associated with acute muscular skeletal injuries including pain and swelling. Traumeel has shown comparable effectiveness to NSAIDS in terms of reducing inflammation, accelerating recovery and improving mobility and appears to be better tolerated than NSAIDs. Arnica and comfrey creamarnica helps to bring out the bruising and comfrey (used to be called knit bone) is a really important herb for soft tissue regeneration. A herbal tonic with herbs such as • Bilberry and Gotu Kolaincrease micro circulation to get nutrients to the area, • Turmeric – antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties

preventing more damage to the surrounding tissue and its warming properties which help lubricate the tendons and ligaments. • Echinacea for healing effects. To promote regeneration make sure your diet includes • Lean protein such as fish and chicken, proteins are the building blocks of our body. • Essential fats to lubricate your tendons and ligaments, especially omega 3s as they are anti-inflammatory. • A wide array of organic fruit, vegetable and grains to provide you with all the vitamins and minerals you need for repair. “So you think you can still smoke a local fish? Well then put yourself on the line.” Enter “Smokem Raglan” at The Raglan Club, Sunday 5th April. Further details at The Raglan Club. The Raglan Wharf Seagull.

Growing up in Raglan life was pretty good. My parents and grandparents all had a strong faith in God and I always knew God was real – I could tell by the way they lived. As I grew through my teenage years I realised I had to choose for myself if I wanted to have God in my life or not. Two things held me back, one was my concern about what others might think of me, and the other was not wanting to be restricted in my choices. Looking back now I realise my concept of God was a bit narrow. Sure some choices were not an option for me but other things in my life have been beyond what I would even dream about when I was a teenager: business opportunities, family life, and being the Pastor of Surfside Church make everyday life an exciting adventure. Would I be where I am now if I had not

taken the risk and allowed God in? Sometimes decisions that at the time seem quite minor can be game changers. For me the decision to step out of my comfort zone all those years ago at Te Uku Church was one of those game changing moments. Gradually I came to realise that God didn’t want to limit me or restrict my life but rather grow me out of my shell to give me confidence to give things a go and sometimes even excel or fall over. It really doesn’t matter. As I reflect over my life, looking out over the farm towards the windmills I can’t help thinking how good life is – especially the great people I enjoy life with. I really couldn’t ask for better, yet deep in my spirit I get the sense the best is yet to come! Roger Peart
