Dear Editor, I am the wife of the man who almost drowned on Sunday, March 3rd, about whom you wrote In Brief last week. I am also thankful to the St John team who took great care of my husband and quickly got him to the hospital. We believe that quick response and care of every single person involved is what saved my husband’s life and led to his quick recovery. They saved my husband and our family, and we wish that in return something great http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla will happen to them! Thank you! Kind regards, Maria Kuvyrkova

Longtimers dine out on 60 years of memories Celebrating 60 years of marriage earlier this month brought back a lifetime of memories for longtime Raglan residents Sale and Mary Gulliver – and that included remembering Orca Restaurant & Bar, where they dined on their anniversary, as a bustling cabaret. The couple, now in their 80s, used to dance there in the cabaret’s heyday and remember the town as a place where people got together socially a lot more than they do now. They remember the buildings now occupied by Orca and its neighbouring shops being transformed from the Centennial Milk Bar and Cabaret – the name’s still inscribed on the building –
A series of Q & A’s with our local musicians This week we talked to singer/song writer Karin Bettley who has just released her debut album ‘Sleepy Wolf’ Tell us about ‘Sleepy Wolf’ Sleepy Wolf is a collaboration between myself and guitarist friend Samuel Benge. It all began in our early twenties and involved many a late Karin Bettley - image: Tracie Heasman night, back room jam session.... I wrote, we sang and played... had fun, and found that we loved to harmonise. We then invited violinist Sam Prebble to guest star and How would you describe your music? Hmmm, indie folk, plus a dash of whimsy and a splash of jazz. singing? No my family isn’t particularly musical, but I’ve always sung.... I was in a the bilingual class for a while when I was kid, I loved all the songs and actions, I was the geeky girl in the choir... met a few electronic artists along the way who I collaborated with such as Epsilon Blue and Cinema 90. to a skating rink before later becoming a café under various names including Seagulls and the Salt Rock Cafe. Sale – pronounced Sa-lay in his native Niue – says he and Mary have seen so many “big changes” in Raglan during their married life. And now Raglan’s also made up of “people from all over the place”, he adds, referring to its increasingly cosmopolitan population and development as a tourist town. He and Mary, who was originally from a sheep farming family across the harbour at Te Akau, came to town soon after their Hamilton wedding in 1953 and had whom went to Raglan Area School – in the local maternity hospital, now the Trust Hospital & Rest Home. Sale was a NZ Post & Telegraph linesman back then and part of a work gang based at Waingaro where he met
Sale and Mar y Gulliver Mary, then a waitress at Waingaro Hotel. Mary remembers cramming their three-bedroomed Government Road home – where they’ve lived since 1960 – full of kids, baking her popular Maori bread and celebrating Christmases and New Years with hangis on the front lawn. She admits life gets a bit lonely
at times these days, with their family now far away in Wellington and Australia, although they spent a year recently living with a daughter in Brisbane. But six decades of married life has been good to them, the couple agree, based simply on the fact “we love each other”. Edith Symes OPEN HOME: Sunday 24th March 4.00 - 4.30pm.

your mouth and let people know your thoughts and inner melody. How do you balance your music with your midwifery? My midwifery inspires me in my music because I see the best of people and the beauty in the rawness of life. I am inspired by the courage and love of people building families, and that wonderful balance that women hold between being soft and being strong. And music helps me to be me... to laugh, to cry, howl, and somehow make sense of this big ball we’re all living on. Why Raglan? Cause it’s f***ing awesome and just keeps getting better and better. Who are you inspired by musically? Oh so many... Nina Simone, Jolie Holland, James Blake, John Martyn, Tiny Ruins (she’s coming in May!!) Cat Power, Marten, Good news for Modern Man......Also, Annick and I do a radioshow on Tuesdays 6pm @ Tractor and it’s always a real mixed tape, I just love it when people do their thing, whatever that is. Song or tune playing in your head right now? Adorn by Miguel, seriously... I just can’t get him out, I blame my not so secret r&b fetish. My dog, he’s old, actually, my whole damn house if I get to choose. Are you a dog or a cat person? Animal person... oooh I love them, I even had a ferret when I was a teen... so stinky... don’t ever do it!! Best piece of advice ever given? “This is not a dress rehearsal.” If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself? I would buy a massive piece of land, reforest it and put it under QE2 convenant, oh wait, frivilous, maybe some of that land could be a perfumed garden too. If you could live any time in history when would it be? pretty sure I would have been burned at the stake! Plus we still have polar bears and Maui dolphins (Sigh). Where can we expect to see you perform next? I’ll be doing a lil set for the opening of the Common Ground and Devon, my two stunning compadres de musica in our secret underground lab, only coming up for champagne, surf and the occasional gig in winter. I’m fantasizing about a multimedia visual and aural yum... It’ll be happening here in Raglan so I’ll let you know....Also maybe the fringe festival in Hamilton. to be part of this series (especially if you are a local with an upcoming gig in Raglan). We would love to hear from you: info@ raglanchronicle.co.nz or 825 7076.

Barrie Rogerson (B.rex) is a well known character in Raglan. He’s bound to have made you a mightly
heard him DJ and now he has his own week the Chronicle chatted to B.rex to learn more.... How did you get into photography back in the day? I was inspired to get into photography after spending time with local photographer Jwan Milek in the seventies, and seeing amazing images in surf magazines of the time. What do you particularly like to photograph? Surfscapes and landscapes are my most favorite subjects. What made you decide to set up your own framing business? After framing my own images to sell in various stores, a demand developed at the same time for custom framing. What kind of framing are you doing mostly? Most of my framing work lately has been contract framing for local artist Jane Galloway, with framing for

the general public also increasing at the same time. Talk us through an average day? Breakfast. Down to my studio in Electric Ave., Coffee at Raglan Roast. Framing etc., Close up between 4 and 5pm When did you choose Raglan as home? How have you seen Raglan change over the years? I decided to move to Raglan from Hamilton in 1974 to increase my surf time and haven’t looked back! I have seen dramatic changes in this town since those days. Raglan was pretty much a retirement and farming town then. The changes have been for the better I feel, with the town becoming a lot more “lifestyle” orientated. Is this the best summer you can remember? No, not the best summer I can remember because there has been so many good ones, but this has been in the top 5. Best advice you have ever been given? “You are never too old to have a happy childhood! “ If you could choose what to come back as, what would that be? Me!
Water use spikes but no real fears Raglan’s been using an average 21 per cent more water a day this month than it did in March last year – but there are no fears taps will run dry anytime soon. Waikato District Council revealed this
week that the town’s water consumption this month has been averaging 1927 cubic metres a day, well up on the daily average of 1595 more than the 1688 cubic metre average in the same month in 2011.
But the council also makes clear that water demand in Raglan is currently within the capacity of the spring and within the water take consent issued by the Waikato Regional Council. If you start to wonder then if it’s absolutely

necessary Raglan should be on its current water alert level 3 – which means a total ban on domestic sprinklers and only hand-held hosing – you get into a curiously political world where what’s good for the goose is good for the gander … and where shortage or no shortage, we need to show we’re being responsible with our water. Stephen Cox, the district council’s acting general manager service delivery, explains that “as a council we try to keep the same water restriction level across the district to minimise confusion and to ensure the same consistent message is being given”. He also points out that the Waikato Regional Council consent requires the development of a drought management plan for the district. “In this plan the council proposes to instigate measures to manage water use in the district during summer to ensure water is being used in a smart and conservative way,” Mr Cox says. “It is therefore a requirement of our consent that we demonstrate we are conserving our water resources. We are being proactive by trying to maintain the reservoir levels to ensure a consistent supply of water throughout the summer.” Mr Cox adds that water restrictions will be reviewed when water consumption levels fall and there is a change in the weather – presumably occasional rain.

Fishing competition pays dividends for one lucky female angler
The Waikato Sport Fishing Club’s annual FCO Raglan One Base tournament, hosted by the Raglan Club Inc. saw outstanding weather conditions with a turnout of 141 anglers. The highlight for the tournament was undoubtedly Heidi Robinson’s 118kg striped marlin caught aboard well-known Raglan boat during the tournament in over 6 years made the capture even more notable. Similarly notable catches were Rob Page’s 8.4kg snapper caught on 4kg line, Courtney skipjack tuna. fought with third place going to Matt Hassard

Wildlife lensman spreads his wings Wildlife photographer Trevor Penfold’s passion for his work brought dual rewards last month with the release of a second book, ‘Wild Behaviour’ – now available at more than 40 retail outlets including Raglan’s Kanuka Design – and the launch of a new photography group based over the divvy at Hamilton Zoo. Trevor’s known already about town for his workshops at the Old School, and with his latest initiative is not only promoting wildlife photography beyond Raglan but also bringing more money into the zoo’s conservation fund which he’s “quite passionate about”. awareness worldwide. The zoo is an ideal training ground for nature photography enthusiasts, he adds, with group members able to develop their skills during the monthly walkabouts, have photographic critiques and follow up if need be with discounted workshops in the education room. Trevor told the Chronicle last week he’s had a good response to his “un-pressured” zoo photography group from amateur photographers, including a few locals who’ve been involved recently in his Raglan workshops.

The award-winning wildlife and nature photographer spent many months last year behind the lens in both the North and South Islands, capturing native and endemic species for his latest book. Though already out on the bookstands, it month. ‘Wild Behaviour – A New Zealand Perspective’ showcases the amazing diversity of animals with which we share our planet, says Trevor, who aims to raise awareness of the importance of using the environment in a sustainable way.
