Dear Editor The February Community Board Meeting was well attended by interested people in the community but it appears that a number of decisions and views raised were ignored or rejected by rather hostile council staff. For example, the Board had agreed on a dog control pamphlet to show visitors where they can exercise !"#$%&'()&*+,-+.)/&0"(1023&"450+.$&!+02!+!&)"&2#1".+&)6+& minute and paint signs on footpaths. The December meeting recorded previous work on sea walls done by the council and its predecessors, the Board was told that the council is still trying to get the Regional Council or residents to repair sea walls at Lorenzen Bay, Puriri & Cliff Streets. Meanwhile there is yet another sign marked ‘Danger’. 7+$-2)+& $+89#+& :"821#& 21)"& )6+& $+9& 9)& ;693+& Bay and into the harbour, it seems only the residents 9)& ;693+& <9=& .+0+2>+& 1")20+$& .+#9.!21#& )62$& $+.2"($& environmental issue despite the fact that it affects all Raglan residents and visitors as we are all linked to the same infrastructure.

‘Clay Fiesta’ fundraiser a success Organisers of February’s ‘Clay Fiesta’ fundraiser for a new community kiln at the Clay Shed say they are more than happy with the $3000 plus they have made so far, with some money making activities still in process. “The weather was lovely, lots of people came to enjoy the beautiful artworks, good music, great food and a chance to have a go at decorating tiles for an installation in the grounds of the Old School.” The tile decorating will go on for much of this year, involving as many community groups as possible. The organisers, Susanne, Judith and Jodi, all members of the Clay Shed, say they had wonderful support from

Clay Shed members past and present, including some who have gone on to work professionally and very successfully. They are also grateful to other members of the Arts Council for their support, to arts coordinator Jacqueline, and to various businesses, groups and individuals who donated goods and services. “We hope Visitors prepare designs on small tiles we have thanked everyone personally, something or won something will get but people supported us in so many much pleasure from owning it”. Raglan duo show their mettle on the pedals Raglan mountainbikers Mike Loten and Dave Wright have taken out third and fourth in their age group over 30 kilometres in what’s touted as the toughest MTB event this side of the Black Stump – but Dave says it was still a bit upsetting to be beaten home by a “twig of a girl” barely into her teens.

Classic have announced two new categories to add to the fun, twice around Karioi and a retro classic style race. The popular race is set down for late July.

The pair reckon the annual Black Stump Adventure MTB races in the rugged Hakarimata Ranges at Glen Massey made for a great day. They !"#"$%&'()*+,$&-!"."#$*-#$/("$!"'%&"#$'(0$'$0#1$ track on a course which has a reputation for being not only “fairly full on” but also really muddy, says Mike.

Complaining Customers - Your Greatest Asset by Stephanie Philp - Chair Many businesses fear complaining customers. They worry about how to handle them and become concerned about the repercussions. Successful handling of customer complaints is part of doing business and all staff should be trained in this core skill. No matter how good your business is, it only takes a misunderstanding, a stressful day, a staff shortage or a rush of customers and your normal good service can fall below par. And that’s when you’re likely to get a complaint. Most people don’t like to complain directly. We prefer to avoid confrontation so instead of complaining we’ll just avoid going to the place that gave the bad service. But this isn’t very good for your business. A person who complains is someone who cares enough to want to help you improve. Hmm, that’s a slightly different way of thinking about it isn’t it? The thing is, you’re always going to have customers who complain. If they don’t complain to you, you can bet they’ll be complaining to someone else, or 16 other ‘someone elses’! There will be much less damage if they complain to you - provided you handle it well. In fact, if you can resolve a complaint in a way that leaves your customer happy, they will often become one of your best allies and refer others to you. However, research shows that if you don’t handle a complaint or handle it badly, not only will the customer not come back, but they’ll tell other people to avoid your business as well! So it would be really useful if you could elicit customer complaints, so you can use them to improve your business. How do you do this? You could really pay attention to how they behave when they’re in your business; !" #$%&'%()" *(+" ,-.*/'%01" 2" +%" &.-3" 4%%5" .*6637" 810)&1*&-+7" relaxed, rushed, angry etc?Learn to read peoples’ body language and tones of voice !"9%"&.-3"*66-*1"&%",-"4%%5'(:"8%1")%$-&.'(:; !"<%="+'+"&.-"'(&-1*>&'%(":%; !"9'+"&.-3")--$".*663"=.-("&.-3"4-8&"?1-:*1+4-))"%8"=.-&.-1" or not they bought anything) Afterwards you could follow up with them by phone if you .*/-" *" (0$,-1@" A1" :-&" )%$-%(-" -4)-" &%" +%" &.')@" 9-/-4%6" a simple questionnaire that you can use to ask openly how they found your service. AFTER 85 YEARS OF CARE, WE CAN LOOK YOU STRAIGHT IN THE EYE

Lately the market has been flooded with special offers on hobby glasses, but be aware that to ensure the wellbeing of your eyes you will need a thorough eye examination by a qualified Optometrist. Because specs can be replaced easily, but eyes can’t. That’s why at Paterson Burn Optometrists you’ll get the very best eye care and assessment first, and we’ve done so in the Waikato region since 1925. Trust us to make sure that the glasses you wear not only look good, but are perfectly suited to your particular requirements at very competitive prices. Raglan has an excellent micro climate and many residences take advantage of that and it gets even better if you live out on the coast. Like Lynette and Kaiwaka at Kai Whenua Organics. So we are involving our children as well as parents and adults with monthly giveaways, things to do, hints and what to plant and general maintenance. Plus later, show us your photos. The ingredients are your soil, water, sunshine, having fun, keeping it simple and being successful. I have gardened for a long time, my parents and grandparents did too. We are not organic, but do practice minimal spraying, manuring, mulching, composting ( two ton of horse manure with lime goes on the quarter acre garden every Autumn), !"#$% "% &'()% $*+",&-*!$.% /'01% 2"013% "(.% !'1$% 4*!% fertilizer. Leeks plants, either trim roots and tops or leave, poke a hole and drop them in, add a watering and leave. Parsnips should be well up by now. Snowpeas and Sugar snap peas can also be sown. Watering: The quick evening spray around the garden is not the best. If you check the soil you will see the damp is only half an inch deep, while the roots are still dry. Mulch with newspapers, cardboard, sawdust, wood chips and bark, then soak slowly. Moisture is retained and you use less water. Gardening is back bending, the exercise is good for us. Granddad Berryman always said “if it grows gorse it will grow anything”, so if it grows weeds it will grow anything, you are the controlling factor. So involve the kids in the growing. If they grow it, they will eat it. See you next month The Raglan Wharf Seagull.

Holistic health centre set to open

Raglan’s new maraebased health clinic opens !"#$ %&&'#$ "&$ "()$ *&++,-!".$ /&'$ "()$ 0'#"$ "!+)$ next Monday, beginning with a threeday week at which both a doctor and a nurse will be available for consultation. It is dedicated to the memory of longserving Raglan GP Tom Ellison who dreamt of a “satellite” clinic to the Te Kohao Health Whanau Ora Centre in Hamilton East, says marae spokesperson Tui Kaa. A plaque was unveiled and a pounamu touchstone, named Te Whakapaa a Tame or The Touch of Tom, was gifted by the Ellison family at the marae’s second whanau ora open day last month and will be placed at the entrance to the clinic. Local artist Heleina Garisau also gifted a piece of her artwork titled Ki te Tihi, signifying the clinic’s holistic approach to health. As well as consultations, a range of free weekly specialist services will now be on offer – from diabetic and cardiac or stroke rehabilitation to social workers, parenting and breast feeding support – all on a rotating basis.
