You reported from last week’s Raglan Community Board meeting that the Mayor took away a map of the open cast mining to check with the Ministry. You could have reported that he also rebutted what Rodger Gallagher, chairman of the Board, said about the 8.2% growth in Raglan’s population (the latest Statistics NZ !"#$%&'()*+(,-),(-%()&&%$,%+.(/0,-1#,( a shred of evidence, that Raglan is being subsidised by the rest of the District. All those facts suggest that he doesn’t believe anything he’s told by Raglan unless he’s able to check it with someone he trusts, such as the Ministry. That goes a long way to explain why, for months, nothing has been done about the overcrowded bus and why Raglan rates are being increased much more than the rest of the District, although we already pay about $700 per person more than the

average. These graphs from Council’s own report show very clearly that Raglan pays disproportionately more rates than the rural areas. Add to that the fact that 46% of the general rate goes to roading, and most of that is spent in the rural areas, and it becomes very clear that Raglan is subsidising the rest of the District by at least $2m a year. However, the Mayor won’t believe it and needs to be told to show his evidence that Raglan is subsidised. I don’t think he can. Presumably he gains his self assurance from being elected by 12.5% of the electorate, rather than the 10.7% of voters supporting his fellow councillors. Local elections come at the end of next year. Could a group of councillors more willing to listen get 13%? Regards John Lawson, Raglan

Artowear coming again to th Raglan Town Hall June 9 One of our local famous Artowear participants, Liz Hoskings, is a very busy woman. Besides her commitment to her wearable arts practice, she has two small children, an older daughter studying in Wellington and she minds another child in the mornings and her god children in the afternoon. All this, with many Artowear projects and ideas on the go. The Te Mata Club, and her mother’s church group collected them for her and the completion of the garment took nearly three years and thousands of multi coloured tags.

Liz has always made things, she has always been immersed in arts. “It’s my life, something I’ve always done.” Both her parents have a love of arts and her mother is a practicing artist and very supportive of Liz’s work. hawk! Hawks are a common sight on New Zealand roads. They are opportunistic hunters, and the largest part of their diet comes from scavenging possums, rabbits and hedgehogs killed by cars. They are often slow to take off, and they struggle to get out of the way of fast moving vehicles. We urge our locals to take care when you see a hawk on the road. Curtain swap opportunity to heat your home Thermallined curtains are wonderful for keeping the cold air out, but you can also add your own thermal protection by putting any extra layers of fabric on the back of your curtains. Autumn is a great time of year to sort out your curtains. Whaingaroa Environment Centre is hosting a free curtain swap on May 19th. Bring in your clean, goodcondition curtains

your curtains off anytime during the week prior and receive your swap ticket. You can also donate curtains to the swap and leftovers will be put in the curtain bank. Whaingaroa Environment Centre is also seeking anyone interested in learning how to make and alter curtains, for your own home or others. Our thanks go to Garrett Automotives who have generously sponsored our May tournament again this year. Some of the games were won or lost but the main point was that players were enjoying their bowls and the good companionship of our club. Congratulations to our locals,

Four other teams had 3 wins each but those with the highest points were Vic Read’s team from Leamington (2nd) and our own team of Bill Bond, Les Schlager and Sue Russell, (3rd). Well done to you all.
