$32,000 LED community information sign will soon greet motorists coming into Raglan. The board, the brainchild of Raglan Area School, has been in the planning for some time and has just received a $10,000 funding boost from Meridian Energyโ€™s Te Uku Community Fund. Raglan Area School deputy principal Bronwyn Haitana says students and teachers have been looking at different ways of improving communication in the local community. โ€œThis will be the one stop shop for community notices and is an integral part of our school strategic plan. As part of that, weโ€™ve put aside $5000 to go into the project and now weโ€™re looking at different ways to fund it. Meridianโ€™s generous contribution takes us some way towards making the community board a reality.โ€ The board, lit up with LED lights, will be positioned near the BP service station on the main road into the seaside

community so it will be seen as residents and visitors to the beachside community come into the town. Bronwyn hopes fundraising will be completed by the end of the year with installation in early 2016. Meridian has allocated $23,996 in the latest round of the Te Uku Community Fund, other projects include: โ€ข Raglan Tuesday shopping bus $500 towards new bus tyres โ€ข Parenting Education Group โ€“ Raglan Plunket $2300 to install a heat pump in the Plunket Clinic โ€ข Whaingaroa Community Toy Library Inc $1550 towards the purchase of toys โ€ข Raglan Scout Hall $2247 for bark replacement below the swing and โ€œoctopusโ€ hose splitter for water play โ€ข Raglan Recycling Centre $2700 for purchase of container to develop a community education workshop facility โ€ข Surfside Mainly Music $699 to purchase baby change table

R

aglanโ€™s surfing reputation, its natural beauty and โ€œlaidback arty vibeโ€ have earned the town a place this month on a global website which reaches two million visitors and is shared with another 300,000 social media followers. The feature article which includes Raglan among New Zealandโ€™s most beautiful towns was set to be published this week, after a writer for culturetrip.com contacted the Chronicle recently asking for suitable photographs it could use. The Chronicle asked what about Raglan had impressed the website, and received a prompt reply. โ€œIt was its world class surfing reputation, the natural rugged beauty that surrounds the town and its laidback arty vibe that caught my eye,โ€ freelancer Helen Armitage emailed from the UK. Operations director Ewa Zubeck filled the Chronicle in on managing a โ€œplatformโ€ as global as The Culture Trip, which kicked off in 2012 and last year won the UK Website of the Year Award for arts and culture. With its headquarters in London โ€“ and hubs in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Tel Aviv โ€“ culturetrip.com is described as a โ€œone-stop destinationโ€ for the best of art, culture, food and travel throughout the world. โ€œWe reach an audience thatโ€™s as diverse as its content,โ€ Ewa told the Chronicle of its nearly two million website visitors each month, not forgetting the additional Facebook and Twitter fans. โ€œAnd weโ€™re looking forward to partaking in Raglanโ€™s culture and community.โ€ After trolling through its files of images of downtown Raglan, the Chronicle settled on a shot by local photographer Stuart Mackenzie to submit for worldwide publication. But some of the detail was a little outdated, so Stuart obliged with a similar but more recent elevated shot of palm-lined Bow Street against a strikingly blue

Soldiers make a LAV stop in Raglan

Kaitoke Bayโ€™s reputation as a quiet backwater got an unexpected rev-up last Friday when several LAVs or light armoured vehicles, with fully kitted out crew, roared up and down Tutchen Ave.

In all five LAVs from the Linton military camp near Palmerston North were involved in the training exercises in and around Raglan. The LAVs also made quite a sight as they stopped in at the Top

Garage. The previous day they were doing manoeuvres around Kawhia. Linton camp is where Prince Harry learnt to perform a haka and helped prepare a hangi last Wednesday.

G

reen Fire Islands โ€“ the CelticKiwi collaboration that debuted in Raglan in 2008 before hitting the world stage four years later โ€“ returns on Saturday week to the town hall where it began, only this time as a showcase event to attract investors and raise funds for its next major step forward. โ€œWe want to get it rolling (again) and keep it rolling,โ€ says local music promoter Tom McCormick of the homegrown production thatโ€™s had standing ovations โ€“ sometimes two on end โ€“ at every performance including on the Oceania stage during Londonโ€™s Cultural Olympiad. To revive the show internationally, Tom explains, the Green Fire Islands company needs to get shareholders on board at the Saturday event where they can meet Raglanbased director Bronwen Christianos and the development team, see a screen version of the production, and hear about plans for its future and how they can be involved.

Speakers will include Rotorua kaumatua Joe Malcolm โ€“ who maintains the MaoriIrish showโ€™s cultural integrity โ€“ and financial director David Waine, a staunch supporter of the production since its first performance seven years ago. Investing in Green Fire Islands โ€“ which has come out of grassroots Raglan in a unique collaboration between two island nations โ€“ will give local people or businesses a โ€œsense of ownershipโ€, Bronwen told the Chronicle last week ahead of next weekโ€™s promotional event. Investors will own a part of the story that started here, she explained, and their support will help the show realise its full potential as a major music production on the festival circuit. Put simply, she hopes the evening will โ€œstir peopleโ€™s heartsโ€ so that Green Fire Islands can go beyond Raglan and London to the rest of the world. She believes audience response on both sides of the globe confirms the show should be โ€œout thereโ€, like the international Irish dance phenomenon Riverdance to which it

has been compared. Fundraising through a share offering, says Tom, is the same way that Riverdance gathered momentum and, at โ€œfull tiltโ€, generated $10 million a year at the box office. As it stands two live performances of Green Fire Islands are already booked โ€“ for next yearโ€™s Womad festival in New Plymouth, and at WOMADelaide across the Tasman. Tom hopes the performances will turn into the start of a big world tour. The journey of the Green Fire Islands story has also been captured by celebrated cinematographer Alun Bollinger, and will be edited into a feature-length documentary. The Green Fire Islands showcase & fundraiser is on at Raglan Town Hall, Saturday May 30, 6-8pm. Free entry. All welcome. Wharimako Black in concert also plays at Raglan Town Hall as part of Green Fire Islands weekend, Sunday May 31, 5pm. Door sales $20, or get tickets online at Eventfinder. Edith Symes

Costly search for paddleboarder easily avoided, says Coastguard A three-hour search last Saturday for a paddleboarder supposedly in difficulties โ€œout the back ofโ€ the Raglan bar could so easily have been prevented, says Raglan Coastguard vice president Craig Bridgman. Craig, who skippered Gallagher Rescue in the search, says a lot of time and money could have been saved by the paddleboard having a name and number on it, and the paddleboarder having done a trip report as responsible boaties do.

The mid-morning emergency services callout came after a member of the public reported a paddleboarder in difficulties around the mouth of the harbour. The Raglan Coastguard despatched first their jetski and then the Gallagher Rescue boat, while the police launched a helicopter which searched the area for 1 ยฝ hours. The paddleboard was located with no-one on it. Police from Huntly also joined the search, and local search and rescue police were on their way out from Hamilton before it was established the paddleboarder had ditched his board and swum to shore.

Craig says he understood the paddleboarder was a backpacker staying at Lazy Stayz hostel, formerly Belindsays, in Wallis Street. โ€œAs soon as we got hold of Larry and Sue [of Lazy Stayz] they could tell us straight away he had returned.โ€ While paddleboarders are supposed to have personal flotation devices, Craig was unsure if the backpacker had a lifejacket or not. He said conditions for the search were bad, with a big tide and a solid three to four metre swell.

Visitor known as champion for children V

isiting Raglan for the first time is a very special man who, in his home country of Uganda, has devoted the greater part of his life to helping care and educate orphans and children from impoverished backgrounds. Emmanuel Kamuli has literally built a school nail by nail in the country's capital Kampala amidst the squalor of slums; creating a welcoming oasis for primary school children from 5 years of age. Children who otherwise would not have any other hope of gaining access to an education. To achieve this he has given all his income from his other role of Pastor in his church. โ€œThe city is full of slums and there are always so many many children who donโ€™t have homes, access to schooling and nutrition. Aids has inflicted a heavy toll in Uganda leaving them alone while the lucky ones may be taken in by family but there are so many alone.โ€ It is nearly three decades since Emmanuel became a Christian, starting first as a youth leader to then eventually being appointed Pastor in his district under Side by Side Christ Ministries. The non-denominational church has connected strongly with his impulse to create a school, helping directly in the school, supporting it through gifting what meagre funds they have, taking children into their care and in the process enabling nearly 150 children each day to receive an education and be cared for. Itโ€™s a daunting proposition because there are ever more children who could be taken but the resources of the school and the community have limits at this time. โ€œIt is a case of small meaningful steps

Emmanuel Kamuli with children that attend the school he helped build. and remaining positive, always positive that a way will be found and so I am here in Raglan, through my connection with Pastor Roger Peart, who I met at a conference last year, to share the story of the school and to raise awareness for financial support.

He hopes to find a way to establish a charitable trust, one option to create a pathway through which child sponsorship can be directed. โ€œI hope to look into this possibility while here but first I am here to speak about the

children in Uganda and what we are doing for them.โ€ Emmanual will speak next Tuesday 26th May at Raglan House, Bow Street at 7 pm and everyone interested in hearing his journey is most welcome. Sue Russell

Surf documentary will showcase New Zealand to the world A documentary that showcases the beauty of New Zealandโ€™s landscape, our culture and excitement of our adventure activities will air this week to a potential global audience of 4.2 million. The 48-minute documentary is about New Zealandโ€™s very own international surf event The Ultimate Waterman - won by local surfer, Daniel Kereopa. It took place over eight days throughout New Zealand in March 2015. The documentary captures the first year of the event from start to finish and follows the surfers as they travel the country competing at locations such as Otago Peninsula, Coromandel, Raglan and Aucklandโ€™s Piha & Mission Bay. It was filmed and produced by New Zealand company Making Movies, who were contracted by Red Bull Media House.โ€จ New Zealanders can watch The Ultimate Waterman on www.redbull.tv beginning Saturday 23 May at 4am local time, but can watch the event teaser now here: http://www. redbull.tv/videos/AP-1HM9UVTD11W11/ the-ultimate-waterman-trailer Raglan local, TUW creator and Surfing New Zealand Chief Executive Greg Townsend, says the documentary is an important part of the eventโ€™s reason for being. โ€œMy vision is to create something that will promote Auckland and New Zealand to the world through television and social media. As well as an event that we own, control and which benefits the sport at home.

Eventual winner Daniel Kereopa during 'The Ultimate Waterman' competition. The documentary is a key part of that,โ€ says Townsend. โ€œNever before has a documentary aired internationally which shows off our diverse surf offering. This is more than a surf documentary, this is compelling entertainment which shows the behind-thescenes, nitty-gritty of competition between some of the worldโ€™s best water athletes,โ€ says Townsend. Devorah Blumberg of New Zealand Major Events says that the documentary shows New Zealand in all its glory. โ€œThe scenery is stunning and shows eight of the worldโ€™s best watermen enjoying our country as their playground. We expect this event to have positive effects on New Zealandโ€™s reputation as a world class event destination,โ€ says Ms Blumberg. The future of The Ultimate Waterman looks bright with plans already in place for

2016 and beyond, says Townsend. โ€œSo far, weโ€™ve had over 2.8 million views of the event content globally. The feedback from all of the athletes was incredible, saying that it had been the best event theyโ€™d ever competed in. Theyโ€™re hungry for more. โ€œThis is a brand new sporting concept that the world hasnโ€™t seen before, so there are definitely exciting times ahead as New Zealand is poised to define what a Waterman is globally. โ€œNew Zealand will own The Ultimate Waterman concept in the same way that perhaps Kona in Hawaii is recognised as the birthplace of the Ironman concept,โ€ says Townsend. Plans for 2016 include adding more surfing disciplines into the competition, inviting more athletes to compete, and spreading it across a longer event period. S Rogan

Raglan to pitch for better broadband, mobile cover

Waipa Networks Business Awards: Entries Open

aglan Community Board is to push the districtโ€™s case for a slice of new funding announced by the Government for better broadband and mobile coverage around the country. The board last week set up a subcommittee to liaise with council economic development manager Clive Morgan and consultant Kelvin Norgrove, of Strateg.Ease, in presenting the Raglan communityโ€™s

needs โ€œin the best possible lightโ€. The Government has set aside $300 million for three programmes โ€“ provision of ultra-fast broadband, a rural broadband initiative and a new mobile black spot fund. Registrations of interest must be lodged with the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment by early July, and the board was told in a briefing last week that โ€œevery council around New Zealand could be biddingโ€. Raglanโ€™s limited projected

Say no to plastic bags At the Raglan House meeting on Saturday all the speakers highlighted the problems of sea pollution and resource use caused by the billion plastic bags thrown away each year in this country. The meeting arranged by Green MP, Denise Roche, also heard from Raglan Community Board candidates, Lisa Thomson and PJ Haworth and Jacqui from Xtreme Zero Waste. PJ spoke of his experience at Xtreme, where a challenge is to prevent bags being blown away by the wind, and of his observations of the use of bags at the supermarket. Lisa brought examples of alternative bags on sale at Trade Aid. Jacqui showed a couple of amusing and informative film clips illustrating the number of bags and how they get into the sea. All the speakers talked of the short use of the bags (on average 12 minutes) and their

ability to last much longer than any of us. Deniseโ€™s campaign is aimed at getting support from businesses and shoppers. Although Pakโ€™nโ€™Save and Warehouse charge for bags, most businesses say they canโ€™t follow their example if their competitors donโ€™t. Denise is hoping to get enough postcards completed to persuade the Minister that plastic bags should be declared the first priority product under the Waste Minimisation Act 2005. That would put in place a plan to phase them out. Fill in a card at the Environment Centre in the Town Hall. John Lawson

Board stays clear of potholes Raglan Community Board should not have to concern itself with โ€œsmall things like potholesโ€, board chairman Alan Vink ruled last week during the open forum section of the boardโ€™s May meeting. People wanting such matters dealt with should instead lodge a CRM โ€“ a request for service โ€“

directly with the council, he said. His comments came after council watchdog John Lawson raised a series of points including that existing dog signs about town had just been repainted despite the changed bylaw, that new lights in John Street were not working and that Go Bus had repainted the Raglan bus and it was now plain blue again without its distinctive Raglan branding.

population growth does not help its case but, against that, it was pointed out at last weekโ€™s board meeting the Raglan district had significant home-based industry and also substantial needs as a big visitor destination. The subcommittee will comprise board chairman Alan Vink, ward councillor Clint Baddeley, board member Bob MacLeod, Raglanโ€™s โ€œMr Tourismโ€ Charlie Young and Brian Scrafton representing local home-based businesses.

Board digs up tool library cash Raglan Community Board last week dug into its discretionary fund and granted $3500 to help the Whaingaroa Environment Centre upgrade its tool library, which lends out implements and equipment to help residents establish and maintain their own edible gardens. WEC had asked the board for $4400 towards the cost of a new storage shed, volunteer T-shirts, signage, co-ordinator fees and handouts on the safe use of the tools. The cost of the new tools themselves has been funded by Meridian Energy Trust.

Few people at new beach โ€˜bachโ€™ The landing station for the new Tasman global access cable thatโ€™s to come ashore at Ngarunui Beach will โ€œlook like a Raglan bachโ€ and not be frequented very often, the community board was told in a briefing last week. Vodafone community relations manager Caitlin Metz said a lot of time had been spent designing a building which would fit into the local environment. Construction would begin very soon, and it was scheduled for completion by September. She added the work to bring the cable itself ashore would interrupt use of the beach for only a couple of days if the weather was good.

ontributions from Raglanites Daniel Kereopa and Armie Armstrong helped The New Zealand Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboard Team finish fourth at the 2015 ISA World Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboard Championship in Mexico this week (Monday 18th May) - securing what was their first event team medal. The final day saw a four medal haul for the Kiwis which was capped off by a silver in the team relay. The Americans dominated the event and claimed the gold medal ahead of Australia with the Silver and Hawaii with the bronze. The four New Zealand medals came through the team relay (silver), Penelope Strickland (SUP) with a bronze, Cory Taylor (Prone) with a bronze and Jasmine Smith (Prone) with a copper. The day started well with Gisborneโ€™s Jasmine Smith finishing fourth in the prone technical race of 5kms. Smith had mixed it with the front runners at the start of the race before falling out of sync with the waves during the middle laps. Australian Jordan Mercer went on to win the race. โ€œThe race started off really well. I was in the lead with Jordan Mercer (AUS) and then towards the end of the first leg we got jagged by the girls behind us and I fell out of sync with the waves after thatโ€ said Smith. โ€œI ended up fourth which to be honest I'm so disappointed with, I definitely didn't come here to get

fourth but that's just how racing goes a lot of the timeโ€ she added. โ€œThis has been the most inspirational โ€˜Worldsโ€™ I have ever been too. You are racing professional athletes and everyone in our team was here to win. โ€œHaving a captain like Daniel (Kereopa) made our team that much stronger and if it wasn't for each otherโ€™s support and belief in achieving we would have never achieved half the results we didโ€ she added. Daniel Kereopa surfed to a sixth placing in the Menโ€™s SUP Surfing and Alexis Poulter (Waihi Beach) surfed to ninth in the Womenโ€™s SUP Surfing. I was slightly out of sync with the wavesโ€ commented Kereopa after losing out in both his qualifying and reperchage semifinals. โ€œConditions were tough but I have to enjoy the moment of being at the top end of the contestโ€ he added. โ€œI really wanted to make the final as it was the goal I had in mind and is what I trained for. I am very pleased to be competing against the world's best and I am not far off the pace.โ€ Kereopa was eliminated by event champion Sean Poynter (USA) and home town hero Felipe Hernandez who went on to place third in the final. โ€œThis result means I can say a big thank you to all who supported and helped me get to Mexico. I am certain the more I compete at the international level the more results will come. I am as good as the rest of world so Iโ€™m amped to prove it.โ€ The menโ€™s paddlers in the stand up paddleboard race ground it out against a strong field of paddlers that they could not match over the

short distance. Armie Armstrong was the top placed Kiwi finishing 14th and Ollie Houghton (Auck) placed 17th. The race was dominated by the Hawaiians with a one-two finish thanks to Connor Baxter and Mo Frietas. The frenzied team relay was the highlight of the Kiwiโ€™s day with Jasmine Smith, Andrew Newton (Mnt), Penelope Strickland and Ollie Houghton taking the line for New Zealand. โ€œThe relay race was just hectic, like boards flying everywhere and fatigued racers running around confused. It was super fun though. Super stoked to get silver behind the Aussiesโ€ commented New Zealandโ€™s youngest paddler, 15-year-old Ollie Houghton (Auck). Ollie Houghton brought home the race for the team but was mowed down in the dying stages by the Australian Team. However, as one of the youngest competitors at the event, the entire beach saw the magnitude of his effort giving him a standing ovation as he crossed the line. โ€œI was honoured, really stoked to have that many people supporting me at once. I was kinda bummed that the Aussies slipped in front of us but, the support just made my dayโ€ said Houghton. The event was held at Sayulita, Mexico from the 10th โ€“ 17th May. A full complement of eleven Kiwi athletes attended the event. The eight day event included 300 participants from 27 nations competing in ten surfing and racing disciplines. B Kennings

MANAGER - BRYANT RETREAT The DV Bryant Trust is one of the longestestablished philanthropic trusts in the Waikato. The Trustโ€™s primary objective is โ€œto enhance human welfare in the Waikatoโ€. Back in the 1960โ€™s the Trust opened a new purpose-built Rest Home for Women, overlooking the inner Raglan Harbour. In 2003 the Rest Home was renamed the โ€˜Bryant Retreatโ€™. The Retreat accommodates up to six women at a time for a usual stay of 11 nights where life revolves around three nutritious meals per day, time for plenty of walks, rest and reflection, laughter with other women and having fun! After more than seven years in this position, the Manager is retiring, and we are seeking interest from applicants who are motivated to provide outstanding guest care and strong leadership to a well established team. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive you will assist with the screening of referred guests, ensure that all guests experience a comfortable and pleasant stay, and that privacy is respected. Recruiting, training and supporting staff will be a critical aspect of your role, as will day to day operational management of the Retreat. You will undertake general administrative and accounts functions, and assist the Chief Executive with the marketing plan, and maintenance and capital works programmes. We are interested to hear from applicants who demonstrate strong leadership ability, empathy with people from diverse backgrounds and high levels of innovation and motivation. While a background in the health sector may be an advantage it is not essential, given that the Trust is not a health provider. However the desire to play a โ€˜hands on roleโ€™ in the operation and success of this unique organisation is critical. A level of flexibility is required, but generally you will work approximately 65 hours per fortnight, which will include one overnight stay per fortnight. Other benefits include eight weeks annual leave per annum. This is a unique role for a unique person! Are you keen to know more?

Please contact Judy Davison on 07 839 3685 or judy@assetrec.co.nz. Applications close Wednesday 17th June 2015.
