To the Editor, Kia ora koutou Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka wishes to thank those individuals and businesses that contributed to the recent Whaingaroa Hoe. The final count of 723 participants (over 5 races) was the largest ever. Lots of paddlers stayed in Raglan for the weekend and we hope that this benefited local business, especially those who supported the race. Please see a full list of thanks, results and race report www.wakaama.co.nz/ stories/read/1003577 Our club and waka ama paddlers across NZ are looking forward to next year. To the Editor, We would like to thank the Raglan community for their support and help in fundraising for the Fire Service Sky Tower Stair Climb Challenge this year. Our Raglan Team fundraised $4,214. Spaces available now A total of $873,030 was fundraised nationwide. All proceeds went to the Leukemia and Blood Cancer NZ Foundation. A special thanks to the Raglan Pharmacy and Raglan Creative âWe have excellent ratios with 100% Market for letting us fundraise outside trained staff offering an exceptional your premises. Also, a huge thanks to educational programm.â Bunnings, Te Rapa, who kindly let us fundraise inside their store. We all completed the 51 Floors, 1,103 steps carrying our 25kg of fire service attire. The race went well with John Oetzel having an outstanding time of 13:42min, with Steve OâByrne on his heels with 13:59. Both these guys bettered their times from last year. Brett Soanes had a fantastic first time run completing it in 17:25mins. Unfortunately I had a terrible race with my worse time yet of 21:24min. The joys of motherhood taking their toll on the start line with a total offorecasts 3hrs broken sleep before the race. WeatherMap - New Zealand weather Was a fantastic day and a thank you to our families for looking after our children while we went and trained, and coming and supporting us on race day.

We really do appreciate it! Leanna Darby, Raglan Re letters to Editor, Our letters to the editor section has recently been overrun with requests to publish thank you letters from organizers of events, understandably wanting to thank all those involved, including volunteers, sponsors etc. While we recognise that it is important and appropriate for organisers to acknowledge those people who have contributed to a successful event, the âletters sectionâ of a newspaper is not the right forum for this. Aside from the space constraints, the letters section is a forum for people to highlight issues that concern them or the community, or a place to recognize random acts of kindness (thumbs up) or the opposite (thumbs down). In general, the latter should be 100 words or less. As a community newspaper we also recognise that some organisations may not have the resources to publicly acknowledge everyone who has contributed to their event and so we would like to provide an alternative by offering to publish these letters on Raglan Net - our community news website. We will provide the web link to the online letters in the Chronicle. We would like to clarify that letters are published at the editorâs discretion and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Raglan Chronicle. Should you have a complaint regarding a business, please address that with the owner/s rather than via this column. Letters to the editor will only be published if the name of writer, full address and daytime contact phone number are included for verification (only the writers name will actually be published). Noms-de-plume/pen names will not be accepted. The editor reserves the right to abridge letters and please note they should behttp://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla no longer than 200 words. From now on we ask that you please consider the above before sending through your material. Editor Weather Map

No fronds mean farewell to one Bow Street palm
,
One the way out: storm damaged phoenix palm will be removed and not replaced
A
storm-damaged phoenix palm that was set to be removed from the Bow Street centre strip this week is unlikely to be replaced because of possible damage to an also protected pohutukawa â a tree which, coincidentally, could well be one of those a local identity chained herself to in the 1960s to prevent their felling. The palm â the closest to the harbour of the 15 which give Raglanâs main street its distinctive appearance â lost its head and all its leaves in a big blow recently, leaving only a few epiphyte plants and birds nests at the top. And although Waikato District Council confirmed a few years back it had some younger phoenix palms growing in Raglan Westâs Oram Park as replacements for any Bow Street palms which died, the council says that is unlikely in this case because the damaged tree shares root space with the adjacent pohutukawa. But there is a glimmer of hope for people wanting to see Bow Street keep its full complement of the iconic palms: the council says it wonât make a final decision until the damaged palm has been taken down âand the
area assessed againâ. On Monday the councilâs parks team said it still did not have a confirmed day for the work, which was to be carried out by a contractor. While there appeared early this week to have been no adverse reaction to the impending felling of the phoenix palm, that was certainly not the case back in the â60s when the then Raglan County Council began cutting down trees in the centre strip. According to a town walk brochure produced by the Whaingaroa Heritage Network, local baker Connie Stephens âchained herself to the trees at the harbour end of Bow Street and stopped removal of the remaining treesâ. There has been an assumption in some recent articles that she was trying to save the phoenix palms, but a radio interview John Lawson recorded with the late Connie Stephens in 2004 makes clear that it was the pohutukawa at risk. She said in the interview that the council began cutting down the pohutukawa between the palm trees one Wednesday afternoon when everyone went to Hamilton because it was Raglanâs early closing day. The next morning
her daughter â working to get the rural delivery away â saw council workers back on the job and came to warn her. Connie revealed that with a Mrs Gibbison and a Mrs Barford she then took her protest action, a stand which cost them 300 pounds when a Councillor Bill Bates took them to court but which resulted in the registration of the remaining trees to protect them. John Lawson believes â after studying old photographs â that in the end only two pohutukawa may have been cut down, in the area between the Wainui Road T-junction and the town hall. The centre strip trees have their origin in 1922 when the then governor-generalâs wife, Lady Jellicoe, unveiled the downtown war memorial and said how beautiful the temporary pongas were. The next meeting of the town board approved the planting of palms and pohutukawa down the middle of Bow Street. In 2007 townsfolk threatened to chain themselves to the trees after the Waikato Times ran an alarmist âfrond farewellâ headline over a story quoting council staff as suggesting the town needed to plan for the replacement of the phoenix palms. Help your community and become a volunteer S to assist its ambulance services in Raglan t John is looking for additional volunteers
and surrounding communities.
âVolunteering with St John is a commitment that many people find rewarding,â St John Raglan Station Manager Bush Barton explains. Ambulance volunteers are involved in a variety of work ranging from emergency life and death scenarios to assisting with patient transfers to and from hospital. Prospective volunteers need to have a current driverâs licence and first aid certificate. Volunteers receive St John driver and pre-hospital emergency care training and success in these courses can lead to further training as an Ambulance Officer funded by St John. For Raglan volunteer Andrea Gilshnan volunteering with St John provides an opportunity to do something for her community. âIâve lived in Raglan for 38 years and been a volunteer Ambulance Officer for 14 years. For me itâs been rewarding. I encourage anybody who has a similar interest in helping provide a well needed service in your own community to volunteer with St John.â Andrea says. For Emergency Medical Technician Tony Agar, retiring from life in London led to a new life in Raglan and fresh challenges with St John. âI moved to Raglan with my family in 2008 after retiring from the fire service in London. I joined St John because I wanted to be part of an organisation that helped others. Itâs great to know you can make a difference in a personâs life by being there when they most need you. The skills you learn and the training you receive is vital. Every call is a different challenge and you never know what to expect.â Tony says. Backed by a team of dedicated volunteers the spirit of volunteering is alive and well at St John in Raglan.
Our St John volunteer ambulance crew from L to R : Tony, Carol, Jan, Andrea, Shelley, and Station Manager Bush Barton
St John volunteers receive comprehensive training, earn qualifications and enjoy the support, friendship and a sense of belonging that comes with belonging to a progressive and caring organisation. Are you interested in becoming a St John ambulance volunteer in Raglan and other Waikato communities? Please phone 0800 ST JOHN (0800 785 646) or visit www.stjohn.org.nz/volunteer for more information.
Join us, it could change your life We are looking for Operational Volunteers to join our team in providing an invaluable service to the community. Volunteering with St John is a commitment, but one which is immensely rewarding. In return for your time, we can offer you full funded NZQA recognised training. The role requires the volunteer to be committed, motivated and trained to be available to respond as part of a skilled, professional team. Before applying you must have: A current First Aid certificate (minimum Level 1); a full NZ Driverâs License held for 3 years; be physically fit; and have a clean police record.
Vegas beckons as Emma tastes international blogging success A shiny black shift dress and black heels will take pride of place when former local Emma Galloway packs her bags for an awards ceremony in Las Vegas this time next week. âI donât wear heels very often (basically never), so fingers crossed I can walk in them!â she emailed the Chronicle last Sunday. The 33-year-old chef canât quite believe her win in the best original recipe category of Saveurâs Best Food Blog Awards, and that sheâs flying to Vegas courtesy of the influential American food magazine along with winners not only from the States but also from the likes of London and Canada. âI still feel like my blog is relatively small,â she admits, but the fact the winners were picked from more than 30,000 blogs worldwide makes her very proud. As a mother of two youngsters with food allergies, Emma had just started blogging her gluten and dairyfree recipes back in 2010 when the Chronicle first caught up with her at home in Cross Street. Sheâd earlier borrowed renowned blogger Heidi Swansonâs book from the Raglan Library. âThatâs what got me onto food blogs in the first place and is what inspired me to start my own,â Emma emailed this week from Perth where she and her Vietnamese- Australian
husband Si Nguyen and their children now live. Emmaâs now looking forward to meeting many of the biggest names of international blogging. âThese awards are like the Grammys of the food blogging world.â And sheâs extending her stay in the States to 10 days to catch up with bloggers and authors â including her âheroâ Heidi Swanson â in person. âThankfully our kids are now at a stage where they are okay with me being away from them for a little while,â she says of her small family, who until three years ago all lived in Raglan where Emma herself was raised. Emma last month enjoyed a fleeting visit back home to launch at The Herbal Dispensary her first cookbook, whose title is borrowed from her popular mydarlinglemonthyme.com blog. But it was not enough time to enjoy a walk on Ngarunui Beach, she laments, or to paddleboard in the harbour out from the silos where her dad Rob lives. However she did get to catch up with the âlike-minded communityâ she misses. She was also captured on camera with 2013 NZ MasterChef winner Aaron Brunet and babywhisperer Sharlene Poole â two other Raglanders with first books to their credit. And she got to âoverdoseâ on feijoas whichâve been in plentiful supply around town of late. âI would kill for a feijoa tree out back (in Perth),â she quips. Edith Symes

First student to graduate from Letâs Grow L
etâs Grow held its first graduation ceremony last Friday (May 16) honoring 5 year-old Bailee Smith; the first student to graduate from the local preschool. With a graduation song playing, wearing a gown, and even receiving a diploma, Bailee was all smiles. After the ceremony, everyone in attendance stood up and shook the young graduateâs hand, and wished her good luck on the road ahead. Teachers at Letâs Grow made sure the passage to school was marked in style. Melanie Dawson â Smith, the studentâs mother, was filled with pride during the ceremony. âI cannot believe how fast the time has gone by,â she said. âBut Bailee is definitely ready for school. She is ready for the next step.â Dawson â Smith said that her daughter has completely changed since she started at Letâs Grow. âI am amazed about all the
things she has learned in such a short time,â she stated. âBailee has really matured and she comes home excited about learning new things.â Alice Marsh, Letâs Grow preschool teacher, said that itâs important to make the transition from preschool into first grade as smooth as possible. The process of school readiness involves laying the foundation with various important practical life skills as well as academic confidence, she explained. âWe want the children to feel ready for school, âshe said. âWe make it fun and engaging but we try to get as much learning in as possible.â Marsh stated that academics can easily be integrated with play. âPlay gives the children an opportunity to drive their own learning and it also allows them to work on their social skills.â Marsh said that the graduation ceremony is all about celebrating the closing of the preschool years and the beginning of new

Causeway a shock but clients happy to wait on Willâs tables
In Brief:
Start on slip repairs
It could all be mercifully over soon for the bearded man in a cap whoâs spent night after with nice, simple steel legsâ heâs working on night keeping guard over the temporary for them. Manu Bay lights from the warmth of his red Theyâd arrived in their BMW but wisely Suzuki Swift.
Will Worsp with some of the tables about to showcased at the Allpress Gallery in Auckland
H
is custom-made native timber tables are all the rage with Aucklanders but Will Worsp could scarcely work in more unpretentious surroundings â a farm shed across the causeway, or rickety footbridge if the tideâs in, on Raglan Westâs Rangitaha Peninsula. The 32 year oldâs been making his stylish, functional tables there from reclaimed wood for about a year now, while also promoting his brand WRW & Co â William Rupert Worsp â with design stores in Auckland. Itâs a bit of a walk up the gravel road to the old, brown shed â or a short drive if the tideâs low enough and your vehicle high enough off the ground to negotiate the bumpy causeway. Inside, the shed seems surprisingly large â cluttered on one side with tools of the trade and tables in various stages of construction, lighter and brighter on the other side of a dividing wall and more like a showroom with an office in one corner. This was Raglan Surf Coâs surfboardshaping factory until recently but Willâs given it over to straight and chunky rather than curved and smooth lines, crafting large dining tables which he says are a âsimple design, not complexâ and âfocused on quality, form and functionâ. He started off in a nearby woolshed he
reckons was âcoolâ but terrible for building tables with âbirds shitting, one power plug and nothing levelâ. Now heâs moving on creatively in a way the one-time Te Akau farm boy could never have imagined. His furniture with its trademark steel legs supporting table-tops of native timber â made from boards sometimes arranged widthways for effect â is attracting rave reviews in design magazines and on Facebook, which Will admits is a good marketing tool. Says one satisfied customer: âI love that each piece is unique and it looks like the solid made-to-last kind of furniture that is well worth investing in.â Will, at 32, has definitely stumbled upon â almost by accident â that niche market. His dining tables start from around $2000, somewhere between top and bottom of the market. Before WRW & Co there was either Studio Italia or Freedom Furniture, he explains. Each piece is custom-made: the client chooses the timber with its natural scars and defects either from Willâs collection of old weatherboards, kauri, rimu and the like or from old wood of their own. Willâs also open to their ideas over the finishes, colours, forms and dimensions. Just the other weekend he drove an Auckland couple over the causeway in his old van to discuss a âquite large custom desk
left it on the other side. Ideally, Will says, heâd like a good Land Rover or similar to transport discerning clients across. Will does all the âfiddly detail stuffâ in the workshop, including putting on the steel legs he gets from other suppliers. âI finish them (the tables) up here,â he says, which means the hand-sanding, final surface coatings and other processes. He has support in his venture from local German cabinetmakers Andreas Broring and Bjorn Ledwig. They showed him the technicalities of making table-tops, and now let him use their large workshop filled with the bigger machinery â like a thicknesser or planer â for the early stages of the process. So how did Will get into the venture? He returned from London at the end of 2012 and picked up on one of his earlier ideas during a trip back to Raglan where parents Simon and Rosie have a holiday home. âIâd built a table for the bach,â he explains. At friendsâ suggestion he then did a few more, an Auckland store took the tables on consignment and almost immediately he had orders to fill. After that final overseas stint he returned to working with wood. âI decided on tables because I love food and wine,â he says. And big tables because theyâre a focal point, he adds. âl like the idea of having 10 people around a rugged, rough timber table.â Now he has his first exhibition coming up at Allpress Gallery, behind Aucklandâs Victoria Market, from June 30 to July 12. âItâs a way to showcase what I can do.â He has about a dozen tables on the go plus a few bedside, coffee and consol tables âand maybe some shelvingâ. Thereâs a heart rimu dining table, featuring old cattleyard rails, and a kauri slab table nearly three metres long with a bowtie key feature in the workmanship. âIâve always loved design and designing,â says Will. âAnd I always liked architecture âĻ that creative side.â But itâs been a long, roundabout journey to get to where he is now. Art school and working in the film industry as a set dresser and buyer were followed by years of travel adventures â much of it on superyachts â and then interior design work overseas. He says his travels remain a major source of inspiration. âAll this time at sea and weekends sifting around the stunning cities of Europe â it was great help to my design reference folder and research development progress.â Edith Symes

Waikato District Council has revealed work will begin next Tuesday to permanently repair the slip damage on Wainui Road, just before the Manu Bay turnoff. The council says the tender has been awarded to Transfield Services and expects the work to take about four weeks. The security presence at Manu Bay has intrigued locals, whoâve been saying on Facebook this week that traffic lights must be expensive if a security guard can be paid $16 an hour â someone asked him how much he was getting â to prevent the lights being âbullied and pushed aroundâ.
Amendment: Thursday May 8th, issue no. 392, page 12, 'Raglan Lions supporting youth' story. The Chronicle has been provided with additional information to the Cameron Frew piece: Cameron Frew was also assisted by the Halberg Trust in purchasing his competition rifle. Cameron would like to acknowledge Ray White Raglan Real Estate for their support while he was sick last year. The Waikato Parafed Shooting Club hosted their annual Waikato Championship competition over the weekend. Air rifle shooters from both Waikato and Auckland participated, with Cameron securing first place and the gold medal in his event.

Tradesman returns to community he once called home
In Brief: Art To Wear ticket update The Raglan Art To Wear team wish to apologise for the wrongly advertised ticket release dates for this yearâs shows. Due to the small size of available venues in Raglan, (once again, highlighting the need for a larger events centre within the town), tickets were strictly limited and both performances have now sold out. However, a small number of seats may still be available, once final entrant numbers have been confirmed. If you would like to go on the waiting list for these spots, leave your details at Raglanâs i-Site on Wainui Road, or call 825 0556. A selection of entries from the shows will also be on display at the Old School Arts Centre, at the Take a Second Look at Art To Wear exhibition, running from Monday 2 June to Monday 23 June. The awards are coordinated by a small group of volunteers, who pour many hours of work into their organisation. The group are seeking extra members for the 2016 awards. If you would be interested in being a part of this team, please email Jean at jean@cbarn.co.nz.

H
e may be a new face to some in the district, but local tradesman painter Jason Ahern has a family history in Te Mata spanning back four generations â and he wants to give back to the community he has always called home. He recently returned to Te Mata, after a 12 year stint in the Deep South â six of those years running a painting and decorating firm â with his wife and three children. He says his last business, based in the Western Southland town of Nightcaps, saw him working on restoration projects of mainly old styled houses for dairy farm conversions. âThere had been no maintenance for a long time on these old villas and bungalows and I gained a lot of experience working on old weather- board homes.â However, his experience isnât limited to just old houses. âWhile down south, I took on projects for local schools and a restoration project for the Southland Heritage Building and Preservation Trust.â Before moving to Southland, Jason worked on upmarket projects in Perth for seven years with a very reputable company. âWe did all sorts including restoration of the Palace Hotel, right in middle of Perth, work for the Premier, and new apartments and penthouses.â Jason is a fully qualified painter and completed his apprenticeship in Perth in the mid-90âs where he says a high standard of workmanship was always expected. âThis has helped me professionally by always maintaining a constant level and reliable standard of workmanship.â

West Coast Painting and Decorating: Jason Ahern returns to community
When Jason grew up his family ran a small farm up Munns Road in Te Mata and his father, Don Ahern, was a builder in the Whaingaroa district for over 16 years. âHe was well known to be reliable and have a high standard of workmanship. So, a lot of my work ethics, I learned from dad.â Jasonâs family moved to Western Australia in 1988, but he has always had a soft-spot for Te Mata. âIâve always considered it to be home
and Itâs great to see all my kids going to the school where, not only I went, but my mum and my grandparents wentâ He says he is looking forward to being able to provide a service to the district heâs always called home. Jason is now trading under West Coast Painting & Decorating. You can contact him on 07 825 0517 or refer to his ad on page 10 in the Quickfind Directory.
