What a superb night at the Raglan Volunteer Rescue Services fundraiser. Lots of people enjoying catching up with old mates and boogieing down to some wonderful sounds. I bet there were plenty of sore heads and empty pockets the next day. The auctions were wonderfully supported with many people prepared to pay a premium for the items that were listed knowing that the funds were going to such a great cause. So thank you on behalf of the community of Raglan to all those volunteers who worked so hard to make this a night to remember. Of course many of you will be aware that in recent times there has been some negativity surrounding our local club so I would like to think that after this positive night we could turn this feeling around in our community and enjoy our club for the great venue it is. Let’s build on this fantastic night and see the Raglan Club grow to be the great community resource that it should be. A Massey, Raglan

I would like to extend our thanks to Patricia Todd, local dressmaker, who was an essential part in Sumo Slam’s WeatherMap - New Zealand weather forecasts http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=raglan success. After designing and making the suits in her East St studio, she then attended the night to ensure they lasted the distance. Dave O’Loughlin, Raglan.

‘Fantastic’ Mudsharks reunion nets $33,000plus for Raglan Raglan’s legendary Mudsharks rocked on until the midnight hour last Saturday night, raising more than $33,000 â€“ and still counting â€“ for the !"#$%&'()*')"+,$!**-'-*&.,*'&*-)/.*&0 It was a â€œfantasticâ€? night, said muso Dave Maybee who was largely responsible for organising the oneoff fundraiser at Raglan Club.  The gig was a sellout within days of tickets going on sale. An elated but â€œa little bit croakyâ€? Dave admitted last Sunday he’d privately hoped for some generous spending from Raglan community to make the gig â€“ at which the six earliest Mudshark members played for free â€“ worth all the effort. He was not disappointed. People â€œwell and truly opened their walletsâ€?, he said, and got right into the !"#$#%& '(& %)*& +,-%#'.!& +./& $+(0*!& %)+%& 122*/& in the breaks between the sets of  good old fashioned rock n’ roll and blues.  Many of the 400 lucky enough to secure tickets  â€“ a real mix of young and old â€“ were '.&%)*&/+.-*&0''$&!**3#.425&+22&.#4)%&2'.46&&

And they got their money’s worth, with the Mudsharks entertaining for a good three hours all up. Local singers The Slipped Discs â€“ more or less the choir which travels around Raglan singing carols in the streets at Christmastime â€“ warmed up the evening with a couple of sets soon after the last curries and hot beef rolls left the club kitchen, which was voluntarily taken over for the night by gourmet foodie Colin Chung. Celebrated Raglan bluesman Midge Marsden, who now lives in Auckland, and his fellow Mudsharks then launched into old crowdpleasers like their hits â€˜Burning Rain’ and â€˜Travelling On’, â€˜Route 66’ and â€˜Midnight Special’.  The full lineup â€“ Freddy Limbert (drums), his father Sid Limbert (bass guitar and vocals), Peter Skandera (harmonica), Gary Verberne (guitar), Dave Maybee (guitar and vocals)  and Midge Marsden (harmonica, guitar and vocals) was unusual for a band in that it included two harp players, but that’s the way it’s typically been for the Mudsharks. It was longtime local resident Dave andÂ

his mate Sid, who was running Bow Street’s 1!)&.7&-)#"&!)'"&8+-9&#.&%)*&/+5:&;)'&('$3*/& the Mudsharks 30odd years ago.  The band played regularly at the Harbour View Hotel, where Mudshark Mondays became something of a phenomenon. This was their fourth reunion in recent years, at either the pub or the club, but the only gig at which the Mudsharks played for free â€“ a generosity matched by Raglan Club, which provided the facilities at no cost, and volunteers across the community who made it all happen. Dave assured the Chronicle the band would play again at such an event. â€œWe should run it on an annual basis ... as part of our normal community calendar,â€? he enthused. Funds from the gig will be split locally between Westpac Air Ambulance, the Fire Brigade, Coastguard, Surf Life Saving and St John Ambulance. None of it, stressed Dave, would be absorbed into regional or national coffers. Dave added that double the numberÂ

of tickets could easily have been sold if Raglan had a bigger venue. And he revealed that plans were afoot for a purposebuilt entertainment/sports facility with the capacity to take a 1000strong crowd. Raglan Club was licensed for only 400 people and the town hall â€“ once a great place for concerts â€“ was now unsuitable, as the sound acoustic panelling which the town’s original arts council raised funds for had since been covered over with hardboard. Water Tip #23

Check for a leaky toilet! Stick a piece of toilet paper to the back of the bowl just above the water line. Check in 10 minutes. If it has slid into the bowl from water running, you’ve got a leak! Small leaks mean BIG losses over time! For more tips, visit WEC @ the Town Hall

She’s decided to keep the intricately patterned Year of the Dragon vase she designed for this year’s exhibition – “until someone offers me an exorbitant price” at least, she reckons. Last year her pukeko platter sold soon after the event. Staged annually in Auckland, the CocaCola Easter Show Art Awards – which includes a range of categories from photography through to pottery – is well worth entering, says Kirstie, who’s delighted both at the exposure it generates and the $1000 prizemoney up for grabs each time round. She attributes her run of success to a “really different technique” called cut outs, learnt several years ago while on a seminar in Auckland, in which she starts with a plain piece of ceramic that’s been poured into a mould then works on it

while it’s still wet. “It’s like working with butter,” Kirstie explains of the consistency. After carving in a design with a small sculpturing tool, she then cuts away using a scalpel. Examples of the glossy, !"#$%&'$(()*+,&-."/*0&"1"-*1#,*!"*-"",* downtown in Raglan at Kanuka Design #,/*2$%*#%*3"*45$*62#-%*7'+1"8**** 9:.#%*;*/2*&-*+//()*#,/*/&'+1$(%<=* she admits, but it’s that point of difference which helps keep her at the top. Kirstie, 38, works from her garage and her studio at home. She’ll spend several hours on a small piece before it goes in the kiln and then gets painted, but up to 60 to 80 hours on the larger pieces. While much of her work, like the dragon vase, is “purely decorative”,

other items like platters and trinket boxes also serve a useful purpose. As a self confessed “mad gardener”, she incorporates Year of the Dragon vase >2?"@-*#,/* ferns in many of her designs along with the koru representing new life and growth. Kirstie’s next big challenge is to enter her work in The Portage Ceramics Awards at Titirangi –a national exhibition with an international reputation that carries a premier award of $15,000. Cool head after divvy crash Tireless community earns kudos for Raglan lad contributers are moving on He’s only 10 but Jake Ellison “did all the right things” – and kept a cool head – when it came to getting help for his family after their car left the road this side of the divvy and plunged to the bottom of a steep, slippery bank. Not only did the Raglan youngster get himself and his sixyearold brother unbuckled and out of their upturned car, then back up the bank to safety, but he had the foresight to take with him his mother Karen’s handbag containing her cellphone and Tristan’s schoolbag with a few toys in it. He also, says Karen – who was trapped in the driver’s seat with a broken shoulder, drifting in and out of consciousness – turned off the ignition and pocketed the car keys. “A total gem” was how she proudly described this week her oldest son, who recently received a special award at Raglan Area School in recognition of his bravery. Karen remains incredulous at the way he acted and kept it all together, with hardly a tear apparently, until the drama was over. She admits they were all screaming for help after their jeep went out of control, crashed through a fence and rolled 40odd metres down a bank when they were on the way to Hamilton. It was very, very wet, she remembers. Thanks to Jake, who alerted passersby once he’d scrambled back up to the road in the rain with Tristan in tow, Karen was freed from her vehicle and carried to safety by two men she believes are from Raglan, and taken to hospital by ambulance. “They were just brilliant people ... they went out of their way (to help),” she says gratefully now from her Whale Bay home.

Seth and Anna Silcock are leaving Raglan to live in Hamilton, Seth having lived in Te Uku and Raglan since 1931.

Jake with his bravery award Meanwhile the plucky year six student has taken in his stride a special presentation of a carved taiaha on a glass stand by Raglan Area School, in honour of his “courage, strength and mana”. The words inscribed on the trophy acknowledge the support he showed for his family in a time of crisis. Syndicate leader Celia Risbridger told the Chronicle Jake was indeed a role model, displaying an “awesome” sense of responsibility. His father Rhys says the Maori carving now takes pride of place in the Ellison household. He’d been called to the scene from his wife’s cellphone soon after the accident. A new organisation called the Wahangaoterangi Trust is in the process of being formed by Russell and his work colleague and friend, Louise Middlemiss who will be managing the Trust. An important part of the formation of the Trust meant that Louise was blessed at the original site of the old Rakaunui Paa, in Raglan, by Russell and Marianne Riki with the support of their hapu, whanau and friends. The reason for the blessing was to give the Trust and these relationships the best start possible and to bless Louise under the name of Russell’s Tupuna Wahangaoterangi, as correct custom and protocol dictates. “It is a great honor for me to be blessed on the Paa site and to be given the name Te Aomarama” says Louise. “It was a very positive and humbling experience. We paid equal respect to each other’s families and ancestors and exchanged Maori waiata with Scottish and Cornish songs, and bagpipes played”. The new Trust’s objectives are; to provide education of Maori history, language, customs and protocol; to rebuild, maintain and utilise the Rakaunui Paa; to support kaumatua; to be an exponent of and assist in kaitiakitanga (management and guardianship) of ko iwi (human remains) and taonga (artifacts).
