Dear Editor, I sincerely would like to thank Raglan Earthmovers for all their hard work building and finishing the Kopua BMX track last week. They have done a fantastic job and only had to move one newly planted pohutukawa tree on the site. Also a big thankyou to Raglan Kopua Holiday park and the domain board for providing the necessary funds. Finally, a big thumbs up for Hugh Pinfold, for designing the track. appreciate and respect this track, so our young tamariki can enjoy it and upgrade their riding skills. Also I would like to state that no one has made any profit from this project, everything was done for free or at working cost. As this is a dirt track, it will need regular care and maintenance, so I would like to call upon those who will be using the track to look after it and give it some attention when needed (removing glass, removing rocks…). Ride hard but stay safe. Dirkhttp://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=raglan de Ruysscher, Raglan

Local talent going through hoops to become Alfred the Great New Zealand’s got talent – but so has Raglan. And Alfred the Circus Nerd is out to reinforce it on this Sunday’s New Zealand’s Got Talent semis when he balances on pipes – and goes through hoops – in a bid to make the finals of the popular television show. It was his recently televised New Zealand’s Got Talent audition – among 35 or so others from around the country – that has earned Alfred, aka Matthias Goed, a trip to Auckland this week with a few “better tricks” up his sleeve to impress the judges. Whether his practised-to-perfection rola bola routine using a balance board, combined with a contortionist act in which he passes his body through small hoops, does the trick is anybody’s guess but “yeah I’m hoping”, he told the Chronicle. The 17-year-old Raglan Area School student will once again have his “beautiful assistant” and number one fan – his mother and aerial artist Irene – with him backstage for the circus act. They’re skills taught to him at the tender age of nine by dad Damian, seen downtown in summers past disguised as one of those eerily motionless ”living statues”. Matthias learnt also to juggle when he was eight years old, and last month told the NZ’s Got Talent judging panel he thought back then that everyone could juggle. The young performer never even had to run away and join the circus because his whole family, including younger sister Artemis, have always been travelling performers. His parents themselves established Circus Aotearoa – billed as New Zealand’s very own circus – after a life on the road with the long-

established but now defunct Whirling Bros Circus, which put up its Big Top a final time five years ago. Since then, from their home in Waitetuna where the kids have grown up and gone to school locally, Matthias’s family have taken their circus all over the country including down to the South Island for two years. They’re about to start the season again in Raglan at Christmastime. Matthias is used to performing in front of people – albeit in a circus tent – and says his television auditions are no big deal. “The only difference is the cameras,” he says. But they didn’t seem to faze his alter-ego, the spectacled Alfred the Nerd, one bit in the audition round as he slickly whisked a comb from his pocket and did his hair, then straightened his tie before wowing

the audience and judges with his balancing skills. That involved climbing atop a board balancing precariously on top of a horizontal cylinder or pipe that was itself balanced on top of a slightly more stable-looking stacker which was in turn balanced on top of another pipe cleverly arranged the opposite way from the first. “Astonishing!” was judge and Opshop frontman Jason Kerrison’s reaction to Matthias’s tricky act. In response to fellow judge Rachel Hunter’s question as to what else he could do, Matthias told the former supermodel simply “I can go higher”. Alfred the Circus Nerd looks likely to do just that and move his whole act up a level or two come Sunday’s show (TV One at 7.30pm). Edith Symes

Whaingaroa Kapa Haka group hit the road

On Thursday 8th November Te Ropu Haka o Te Ropu Aroha ki te Reo hit the road for Tauhei Marae. But the journey did not begin on Thursday. It began three months ago when teachers of Te Ropu Aroha ki te Reo (Raglan Area Schools rumaki unit) decided to form a haka group. The main goal was to strengthen our reo, culture and relationships as well as competing in a competition. Teachers decided to open the opportunity to all students in our community, having students from Raglan Area School mainstream and rumaki syndicates, and from Te Uku and Waitetuna primary schools. After three months of practicing

everyday and every weekend Te Ropu Haka o Te Ropu Aroha ki te Reo stood for the first time on stage to compete in the Waikato Tainui Primary Kapa Haka Regionals at Te Wharekura o Te Rau Aroha, Waitoa. The pride of the west coast was felt and seen by all. Our ropu haka had our whanau cheering, crying and also the judges up on their feat clapping with amazement. “There are no words that can really describe the feeling tamariki, whanau and kaiako felt when our ropu performed that day. We are very proud of our tamariki and I know our whanau are too. Even though we came 8th out of 17 groups (just missing out on competing in the Nationals next year) they were absolute winners in our

eyes and our goals and aspirations were achieved. No reira e aku rangatira ka nui te mihi aroha, mihi mutunga kore hoki ki a koutou katoa”. Thanks go out to all who have supported us on our journey especially Te Kokiri (GrandpaTex Rickard), the Lions club, Poihakena marae, Mootakotako marae, Waingaro marae, The Nannies and our whanau, iwi and community. Na nga kaiako o Te Ropu Haka o Te Ropu Aroha ki te Reo Liz Rangiawha, Chanel Ruawai, Wini o te Ata Hunia and Wayne Harris. “Iti rearea, teitei kahikatea ka taea”

Raglan chef set to pop up with eatery on ‘crazy side’ Foodie fads come and go – and one of the latest coming to Raglan soon is the pop-up restaurant that promises an exclusive, fine-dining experience. It’s that “crazy, scientific side of fine dining” that Raglan chef Lerryn Hawken loves, and he’s keen to see if there’s a decent number of foodies around town who want to join in. Come late January Lerryn – resident chef at The Shack for the past 18 months or so – will reveal his “random location”, move in for a night with maybe one big table and another chef on hand and provide the best menu he can possibly come up with for about 25 fellow gastronomers. It’ll be a style of food Raglan’s never seen before, he promises. Think sake champagne sorbet, wasabi tobiko and coconut shaving cream – the recipe not the skin-care product. Add a dehydrated kiwifruit and honey pearls which are like caviar balls of honey that “explode in your mouth”, explains Lerryn, and you’ve got some very technical tastes to play with. “Geeky chef stuff”, Lerryn admits, but serious food all the same and achieved by experimenting with hydrocolloids for instance, which means a chef can create almost any shape and texture using food without compromising flavour. Essentially it’s molecular gastronomy – or edible experiments designed to “blow your socks off”! This is not the kind of cooking you’d get at home or in a restaurant, Lerryn points out. It’s a “big fad” in the UK and has taken off in Auckland where a library and a carpark building have been used as the venue. “Prep-wise” it’s all done in another

Multi-talented: Lerr yn Hawken is typically comfortable in a recording studio or kitchen kitchen, says Lerryn, then he sets up somewhere else for his ideal eight-course degustation or tasting menu which will include complementary cocktail drinks and wines matched to the food by a sommelier. It’s about being inventive, playing with the senses and having a fun dining experience, he adds hinting at the possibility of flambéd food. “I like to surprise people and throw in a bit of theatre for good measure.” And everything on the plate will be locally produced, he says, if not from the likes of Whale Bay’s own Kaiwhenua Organics then at least from within the South Waikato region. Even the plates of wood and slate are being personally handcrafted by Lerryn’s father in Hamilton. The 29-year-old chef – who divides his

time between Raglan and Hamilton where he’s also a DJ, producer and engineer at The Porch Recording Studio – kicked off his restaurant career in the city, first at ‘Domaine’ then ‘Tables On the River’ before more recently starting ‘Nash’ in Cambridge. While he wanted to be counted among the country’s top 10 restaurants within six months of opening, he got to be firstequal with Auckland’s The Grove in Metro magazine’s awards last year after only three months. And while at The Narrows in 2010 he was a finalist in Waikato Food and Wine Festival. Lerryn will be selling tickets and finalising arrangements for his pop-up restaurant a month or so before the gourmet event. Edith Symes

Forget the candles - it’s carols by glowstick light Carols by candlelight gets a new twist next month as Raglan Union Church gears up for its first GLO carol singing night – with glowsticks instead of candles. Lighting candles in the old wooden church would be too risky, says Alan Vink whose wife Jeanette is the minister, but with the church windows “blacked out” the glow-in-the-dark effect will add to the festive spirit. “We really do want the whole family (to come),” Alan told the Chronicle. He expected glowsticks to appeal especially to the children at the early evening event. Although he stressed it was primarily “a community carol singing night, not a concert,” local musician Dave Maybee and his carols group have been invited as guests along with one or two school groups. Dave’s choristers have spread festive goodwill around town for the past few years as the Christmas Elves, singing carols outside the homes of people in need of some cheer. A sound system is already set up at the church and a “very competent” pianist has

also been invited to play for the occasion, adds Alan. The old church will be decked out with Christmas decorations. It won’t be all singing and music as an auction will also be held to raise funds for the local St John Ambulance. While the event, with a $500-$700 budget, is being hosted by the Union Church it has some local sponsorship to help cover costs. “I’d like GLO to become an annual event if all goes well,” Alan says. A new service – since Jeanette took over as minister 18 months ago – which targets families has more than doubled the church’s congregation, Alan revealed last week. The mission now is to change the predominantly traditional image by drawing younger families with a more “contemporary and relevant” message. Meantime, St Peters Anglican Church will again host its popular Carols and Kai evening next month. It’s “open to everyone”, says Reverend Rhonda Chung, and Dave Maybee’s ‘Slipped Discs’ will also be singing for their supper. Edith Symes

Smooth talking on the surface Waikato District Council has moved to smooth over a complaint about the stony surface that retailers, shoppers and visitors have been left with – temporarily at least – after the resealing of Raglan’s main street. The gripe came from one-time local councillor Matt Holl, who told the Chronicle he was “confident” someone had got it wrong with the type of sealing laid in Bow Street. It should have been a smooth, more user-friendly surface that also prevented stones being traipsed into shops, he commented. But just as the stones have been sticking to people’s shoes or jandals, the council was this week sticking to its guns and insisting the road surface was appropriate. “The new surface has been prepared with a combination of smaller-sized stones to give a smoother driving surface,” a council spokeswoman said. “The chosen surface provides good waterproofing and friction qualities while at the same time a smooth driving surface at a relatively low cost.” But what really sealed things was probably in the council’s final word on the matter. “A superior asphalt surface was considered,” the council spokesperson added, “but it would have cost nearly 10 times the amount of the chip seal surface.” Edith Symes

Local resident hits 101 and still cracking jokes Raglan centenarian Peter Green reckoned he was “not doing too bad for a young fella” as he celebrated his 101 years with friends at home in Cliff Street on his birthday last Monday.

He looked dapper for the occasion in suit and tie, and told the Chronicle it’s the only time of the year he gets dressed up. Personal caregiver Cora Fischer, who’d baked the birthday cake, was on hand to make sure things ran smoothly. But Peter handled phone calls and visitors with aplomb – obviously enjoying the occasion – and boasted he’d passed his warrant of fitness recently, despite having had a cataract operation this month. And he was keen to look for a youth hostel in Raglan “if I ever need to move”, he quipped.

The work is being sold worldwide through the Art for Maui’s Facebook page. The month-long exhibition has been timed to coincide with the arrival in town this week of seapaddlers – led by Dave Rastavich of Surfers for Cetaceans – on an epic 350km ocean journey to raise awareness of NZ’s marine environment. Ransom Wines and Raglan SuperValue will support the event on opening night at Matapihi, next to the gym on Bow Street, from 7pm.

4.9%

Up to a dozen local artists are involved in the fundraiser and will donate a percentage of their sales to the NZ Whale & Dolphin Trust, while the gallery will donate 20 percent of its usual commission.

Do you work from home?

Would you be interested in using a shared workspace for some of your working week? With freelance and flexible working arrangements on the rise, working from home is increasingly becoming a reality for many people. And while home-based work offers many advantages (no commuting, wear your pyjamas all day!), it’s a sense of community and shared purpose that keeps ideas flowing and people engaged and motivated. Shared/communal office spaces are a growing trend in many cities and towns across the world. I’m currently trying to gauge whether there is any interest in Raglan for such a space… The vision: A shared space where freelancers and mobile workers could gather to work, chat and network. Users would pay a subscription fee to cover costs. (Internet would be essential). One possible option could be the new Raglan Artisan space at the Wharf. If you’d be interested in working from such a space, or have any ideas and suggestions, I’d love to hear from you. Please email Emma at emmabrooks.nz@ gmail.com.

Rural hideaway offers art and hospitality Raglan Senior Citizens Club took a trip with a difference last Thursday when they visited the Creative Workshop owned by mother and daughter team KarronCampbell and Rickie Hill in Cogswell Road. Twenty two of the club members enjoyed browsing and shopping in the attractive gallery studio which Karron and Rickie have developed in what was once a pig shed on their bushclad property. The English born artists create between them a wide range of paintings, sculptures, jewellery and multimedia works, many of which have featured in exhibitions in

Raglan cafes and galleries. Club president Andy Miller and his wife Dorothy say they heard about the Creative Workshop from members of the Raglan Ramblers who visited when walking in the Cogswell Road area, and contacted Karron find out whether the club could visit for one of their monthly meetings. The opportunity to travel in the luxurious hybrid electric bus from the Sleeping Lady Lodge was an added incentive. Karron was delighted to host the visit and to provide lunch, though the absence of Rickie overseas left her somewhat short handed. However, she says, friends stepped

Snapper season comes to Blacksand Café

Letters: cont... Dear Sir As long-time rural and now town residents, who have occasionally required the services of the wonderful district nurses, both at home and in their rooms, we do not agree with the explanation given by the Community House Chairperson, as to why the nurses must relocate. There is quite simply no other service as community focused as that provided by the nurses over a huge area. They cannot always be present in their rooms due to the space for consultations, administration, equipment, etc. etc. It is vital to have a central accessible and safe base, and it was initially fundraised and set up for that reason. This is a “bad and unpopular call” from the Community House, which needs to be reversed. Glennis & Garry Carter, Raglan

in to help, and she was able to borrow cups and teapots from the Whatawhata tavern where she helps to organise monthly craft markets. Her guests were treated to tea and coffee on arrival then, after enjoying all that the studio and gallery had to offer, sat down to a delicious al fresco lunch of bacon and egg pies, salads and dessert. Dorothy and Andy say the group were delighted with their visit. Treasures purchased from the gallery included one of Karron’s trademark mushroom lamps which will be raffled at the Senior Citizens Christmas meeting in December. Judith Collins

Todd England’s car vings on display at Blacksand Cafe

Along with the great bout of fishing we’ve been getting off our coast, a school of wooden carved fish by New Zealand artist Todd England has made its way to Blacksand Café. Made from native timber,

each fish is carved by hand, with the wondrous snapper made from pohutakawa. An artist and surfer, Todd has been living in his home on wheels for around 10 years. You may have noticed his green house truck parked around town.

Junior bowlers continue to shine Last Saturday Raglan Bowling Club held its annual Marx Triples drawn event. Six teams played with the eventual winning team of Des Bishop, Ashleigh Jeffcoat and Terry Green taking the trophy plate with four straight wins.

On Wednesday afternoon’s the bowling club is again hosting groups of Year 9 and 10 students from Raglan Area School - words getting out that bowls is a fun game to play even for the absolute beginner with more and more students becoming interested in giving it a go. Sue Russell
