Smiles bely a draining time building first Habitat home Raglan’s first Habitat for Humanity home is finally inhabitated – with everyone involved breathing sighs of relief that unexpected challenges in the build are now water under the bridge and not the house.

Nic said the Hutchins-Williams family had been “fantastic”, spending more hours than required on building, painting and landscaping. A hand up, not a handout, is a central theme of Habitat for Humanity’s work. Habitat’s overall vision was a Christian-based one to see everyone had a decent place to live, Nic added. “Even if it’s one house at a time it’s doing something for a family.” “It was a bit of a damp site when we bought it,” Nic conceded, “but we (had) put in our own drainage.” Discussions followed with Waikato District Council to get the problem fixed and it’s now “under control”. That’s a huge relief to all, especially Whaingaroa Affordable Housing Trust (WAHT) which has pushed for six years to get help for local families suffering financial strain, and has been able to do so by partnering with Habitat. “It’s a start,” said trustee Vera van der Voorden after the official ribbon was cut and five excited children were let loose in the house they now call home. A sixth brother also lives a little further down Cross Street with his partner and baby. “This (Raglan project) shows everybody it can be done,” Vera said. “There’s hope. Let’s build from here.” She was particularly pleased the house was two-storey to capture the sun and make a smaller footprint. Board stands ground over plea to help keep surf patrols afloat Raglan Community Board is unable to throw a lifeline to the town’s surf lifesaving club – and a club official has hinted that may end up in a drowning at what he described as “the busiest beach in New Zealand�. The Ngarunui Beachbased club went to the board surf cap in hand last week over what it described as a “shortfall in funds from Waikato District Council and Hamilton City Council� to provide paid lifeguards on summer weekdays when volunteers were at work. But its application for $5000 of the $9500 cost of the lifeguards service – the Raglan club has secured the other $4500 from Surf Life Saving Northern Region’s discretionary fund – was declined by board members. Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley said the problem was that Hamilton City Council had cut its grant this year. “Waikato has met its responsibility, Hamilton hasn’t,� he told the meeting. “We are seen as picking up the tab because the city didn’t but [Waikato] ratepayers have already done their bit.� Councillor Baddeley also questioned whether other funding sources had been “exploited�. Board member Bob MacLeod was concerned the surf lifesaving club had apparently done no fundraising recently – a claim that was disputed by club administrator John Thomas – and that club administration costs “have shot up hugely�. He said he was “against paying again� and moved successfully that the board decline the club’s application for a discretionary fund grant. It was a busy meeting for applications to the discretionary fund, with community board members giving the Raglan and Returned Services Association $380 towards the cost of recording, photographing and cataloguing artefacts in its care, and voting the Raglan Community House $1108 towards the operating costs of a van bought by the Raglan Lions Club for use by community groups. The community house plans a run around town once or twice a week to collect mostly elderly residents and bring them into town
for shopping or visits to the likes of the doctor or dentist. It says the service will also help counter “social isolation�. The board’s pre-Christmas largesse did not extend however to the Raglan Information Centre, whose application for funding to meet half the cost of new information signage was deferred until February so centre manager Anthea Jackson could “seek some alternative funding�. The information centre asked for $1275 to help create a new information board outside the museum/information centre building and to get rid of the untidy collection of sandwich boards put out each day and which are seen as a hazard to pedestrians. But the community board felt that because much of the information board would be advertising, there should be more financial support for the project from the business community. The news that Hamilton City Council has cut its grant to Raglan surf lifesaving comes ironically at the same time as the Waikato Regional Council has announced Sunday buses to Raglan over the peak summer period to give Hamiltonians “a chance to enjoy a relaxed day by the seaside�.

Not that the 24-year-old’s complaining – he joined locals for an hour or two at Ocean Beach on an overnight visit to Raglan last week and found it a “pretty cool” experience kitesurfing with the wind in one direction and the current in the other. When the Chronicle caught up with Ian, who’s famous for his midair tricks, he was still buzzing about “the big harbourmouth opening and the tide changes” that make Raglan kiteboarding unique and are a big reason why the sport has flourished here in recent years. “It was quite different, actually,” he said of his time out on the water with the likes of Olly Brunton, a Raglan acupuncturist who also owns and edits New Zealand’s online kiteboard magazine. With the current moving at 8-10 miles per hour, Ian said, kiters here didn’t need as much wind as was usually necessary to “get going”. Ten knot winds, as opposed to 15 or 20 knots most places elsewhere, would do it. Ironically wind was not an issue anyway the day the American recognised as being at the top of his game blew in, but Olly later confirmed the conditions he encountered were unique to Raglan, giving lucky locals “many more riding days than the rest of the country”. Raglan was in fact the hub of kitesurfing in New Zealand, he said,
and where the sport’s fastest races happened. “So much is going on here (in kiting)”, he said. “It’s massive.” And hosting travelling pros like Ian – brought to New Zealand on a 10day tour by his sponsor Ben Wilson Surf to promote an Auckland-based kite school – is pretty much the norm for what Olly calls “the usual crew” who kitesurf regularly at Ocean Beach whenever tide and wind conditions allow. Ian, who’s kitesurfed half his life to become one of the world’s best, confessed he had no strict schedule while in the country but was simply “chasing conditions”. That brief had taken him from Surf Highway 45’s famous waves in Taranaki north to Raglan where he also had time to indulge in some other local sights and experiences. The Point, Indies and Wainui Reserve got the thumbs up from the Californian pro, who also enjoyed “beer and a burger at the tavern” plus coffee and a game of hackysack with the locals in Volcom Lane. Kiteboarding, as it’s more commonly known locally, started in New Zealand in 2001 and – perhaps because of the great conditions here – the country is building a strong reputation internationally with Kiwi riders finishing in the top 10 at the world racing championships in Italy last month. The sport is set to make its first appearance at the Rio Olympics in 2016, a move welcomed by Raglan Windsports which supports and promotes competitive kiting. Edith Symes

CBD could be stuck a while with tar problem A decision on what to do about the widely criticised resealing job in Raglan’s main street is still more than a week away.
And in the end the Waikato District Council could still opt to do nothing, despite a request from Raglan Community Board members last week that council fix the mess before the start of the holiday season. Within a day of the reseal job in mid-November, areas of chip had come away from the seal to leave areas of tar exposed. The tar bleeding problem has since worsened – particularly in parking bays – and board members pointed out at their meeting last week that tar was being trampled into shops and also damaging footwear and clothing.
Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley was particularly unhappy with the reseal, especially after unsuccessfully requesting a costlier cement-type seal that he said a “destination” like Raglan deserved. He said the situation was “simply not good enough. I am not a happy chappy at all.” But even with the intervention of council roading committee chairman Noel Smith, who sat in on last week’s community board meeting and later inspected the mess in Bow Street, it seems a real possibility Raglan could be “stuck” with the tar problem over summer. Council’s general manager roading and projects, Ian Gooden, told the Chronicle on Tuesday that following community feedback the
council was now looking at options ranging from doing nothing to applying a further seal coat. “These options are currently being costed and will be discussed with key elected members for a decision in the next 10 days,” he said. Mr Gooden defended the recent sealing job, saying the contractors laid a similar surface to what was there already. “When the surface was replaced about eight years ago the seal coat would have been very similar in texture to what is there now,” he insisted, adding that “hot weather and traffic will help to bed the chip down over time”. He said that given the current budget, it was decided to apply a
further seal coat to a pavement that was already failing and “try to get a few more years of life out of it before a major road reconstruction was required”. Mr Gooden reiterated the alternative surface treatment – the asphaltic cement surface requested by Councillor Baddeley – was about 10 times the cost, and said that would not have been cost-effective as the pavement underneath was starting to fail. Fishos hooked on Ecolab tournament
They came in their multitudes last Thursday – farmers from all over trying to catch that ‘big one’ and have a shot at winning some serious prizes in this year’s annual Ecolab Fishing Comp.
It’s the fourth year the competition has been staged from Raglan Club in Bow Street and if numbers of entries was anything to go by, it was going to stack up to be one of the best yet. Ecolab District Manager Jeff Clarke said the Raglan event, one of three the company holds nationwide, began out of demand from clients to “come out west”. “When we hold the competition at Tauranga/Whakatane the average catch is about 4 pound, while here in Raglan it’s about 8 pound – that says it all! This year we’ve got nearly 400 entries.” The competitions success springs from its simple format. Basically get out there fishing, try to catch the biggest snapper, kingfish, gurnard or kahawai, get it
back to the weigh-station at the club between 4 and 6 pm and wait to see whether you’ve scored a prize. “There’s no way we could stage this event without all our sponsors, and the Raglan Club is a great venue”, Jeff explains. While the entry fee covers 75% of the cost of prizes, the sponsor’s support is still a major contributor. Top prize this year was a ride-on lawnmower valued at around $4,000 for the heaviest snapper caught by B J Wiki. Weighing in at 10.16 kg B J caught the ‘monster’ at 40 metres halfway between Ruapuke and Aotea. There are plenty of long-term benefits for Raglan flowing from the competition itself, including funding to Coastguard and for the first time this year, targeted additional money from Ecolab for Coastguard’s ‘first response’ vehicles – the jet-skis. “The following we have as a company with locals is strong so by holding the competition here we’re able to give something back to the town generally.”

Now let me see.... it all started with sewing lessons over a year ago with the lovely Dominique (a friend) and I realised sewing was a passion. I had thought clothes would be my thing but my daughter Bella requested I make her a teddy so I did and I discovered it was easy and I said ‘I can do this’. I then started going to ‘Sew-vember’ and got inspired to create gifts for my own children and their friends. I decided to create monsters out of all the amazing recycled fabric I was coming across and drawn to. ‘Madstar’ was born from combining my name Maddie and monster. I just did my first creative market with my friend Sue who is making sandwich wraps and marble bags. My husband who is a web designer has designed me a website. It’ all happening. Activist raises awareness of seabed mining issues Renowned surfer and environmental activist, Dave “Rasta” Rastovich, has successfully completed the first leg of an epic 350km paddle from Cape Taranaki to Piha in New Zealand which he has undertaken to draw awareness to proposed seabed mining that threatens the area. Thirty-two year old Rastovich, who is New Zealand born and now lives near Byron Bay, Australia, completed approximately 40 kilometres in around five hours to reach Fitzroy Beach from the launch location near Cape Egmont Lighthouse last Friday. Rastovich’s 17-foot paddle-board is custom built for the epic journey that will carry him through the coastal zone under direct threat from iron ore mining companies. The entire west coast of New Zealand, from Wanganui to Cape Reinga, is under either a prospecting or exploration permit for iron sand. A local group, “Kiwis Against Seabed Mining” (KASM) has been established to draw attention to and oppose the plans. “This campaign is about awareness and education and supporting the great work of community based groups like KASM (Kiwis Against Seabed Mining). We’re urging people to just have a look at the facts and how that will impact them and their community,” said Rastovich.

New faces in business house bowls Last Tuesday night the first of several weeks of serious fun was had down at the bowling club when 21 teams of triples began this season’s business house bowls tournament – something that has become an annual tradition. While

Interclub bowls gets off to flying start
Over the last few weeks two teams of bowlers representing Raglan Bowling Club have been busily preparing to take on other bowlers in the annual Waikato Interclub Mixed 7’s bowling tournament.

returning to test their skills, having played in the business house comp for several years, it was great to see some brand-new teams forming. Business House organiser Bob Carter says the tournament is a great opportunity for those who can’t devote a lot of time to bowls to give the game a go. “I think we’ve got a great format going with two games followed by a
BBQ. Teams come along year after year and they know what to expect”, says Bob. Often business house bowls is a stepping-stone toward taking up the sport a little more seriously but as an event it has certainly galvanized its own special space in Raglan’s bowling programme. Sue Russell
Dear Sir As long-time rural and now town residents, who have occasionally required the services of the wonderful district nurses, both at home and in their rooms, we do not agree with the explanation given by the Community House Chairperson, as to why the nurses must relocate. There is quite simply no other service as community focused as that provided by the nurses over a huge area. They cannot always
be present in their rooms due to the nature of their work, however they still require the space for consultations, administration, equipment etc. It is vital to have a central accessible and safe base, and it was initially fundraised and set up for that reason. were served. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. We did a brief, low key, writing exercise together as a group. The exercise was to write a brief letter to the editor of the Raglan Chronicle; that is why you are reading this. People took turns reading their letters to the editor. They also read their homework from the last session. The topic they had been assigned to write about was “silence”. People gave feedback and made suggestions. It was really entertaining to hear the essays written by the other group members. The vibe of the group was very friendly, positive and encouraging. It was decided that everyone would write about one of these topics for the next session: a tramping adventure or a car accident or some interesting combination of the two. I left feeling inspired. I will definitely go again. If you have been wanting to start writing, or if you are in need of some support for a current writing project, I would strongly encourage you to consider attending a session of the Raglan Writers Group. The group meets on Tuesdays (fortnightly) from 7-8:30pm. The next meeting will be Tuesday November 27th. You can visit the web site of the Old School Art Centre for more contact details. As I looked to my right, I saw that our washing machine was sitting on top of two large skateboards in my son’s room. My husband found that using the skateboards made it very easy to move such a heavy front loading machine. As I looked to my left, into our bathroom, I saw that our laundry bin was over flowing. It was clear to me that, today, I needed to head down to the Raglan Laundromat. That seemed like a drag on such a sunny morning. However, when I got there, a positive thing happened. I saw a notice taped to the glass window of the Laundromat about the Raglan Writers Group. The notice informed me that new members were welcome and that their next meeting was the same day that I saw the notice. I had wanted to get back into writing for some time, but I had not yet carved out any time in my schedule to do so. Maybe attending this local group would support and encourage my desire to write? Maybe I would meet some nice people? I decided to give it a go. The Raglan Writers Group meets at the Old School Art Centre on Stewart Street. Patsy greeted me at the door and introduced me to the 5 other people who had turned up. Refreshments
