I think we all agree that the Raglan he describes would be wonderful but his solution comes up short! He suggests "we start spending money on improving what we have" etc. My question is what money and whose money do we start spending? His letter bought to mind a comment Margaret Thatcher made a few years ago "The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples money." As I played a large part in the creation of the positive things he has identified (Museum, walk bridge, wharf etc) I will gladly assist in creating this utopia when Stuart comes up with the funding. To the Editor Again the Arthritis New Zealand appeal was a success due to the wonderful efforts of thousands of volunteers across the country. Not only do we take the opportunity to raise funds for our services, but this time raises awareness of arthritis, its invisibility, and its impact on people, families and communities. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in New Zealand. There are children who are taking chemotherapy drugs, not because they have cancer, but because they have arthritis. And there are parents who can’t hug their children, because it hurts too much. To the Editor After 40 years of legal practice I am now retiring. For the last 38 years of that time, I have been operating a Raglan office each Thursday afternoon. For many years the office was in the offices of Lugton Land until it closed its Raglan branch and, latterly has been in the Bizworx Accounting office. I wish to thank all my loyal Raglan clients over the years who have taken advantage of the availability of the Raglan office. Rock-it takes off in all directions
T
he Rock-it surf shop near the turnoff to Ocean Beach has new owners – and they’re launching it in new directions that will see the old shearing shed also become a café, a centre for music and events, a full art studio and a water’s-edge hireage point for standup paddleboards and kayaks. The matai-floored shed has already taken on an even more rustic look, with the kauri sheep pens from a similarly aged shed recycled as tables and booths for a café which new Rock-it proprietors Sarah Kay and Rob Bailey hope will be fully up and running by Christmas. Piles on which the kitchen will be built were about to be sunk when the Chronicle called on Monday, and there’s also a completely different look to the rear of the building where glass doors now open out to decking and a garden area close to the tidal tributary where paddleboard and kayak rental customers should soon be able to launch their craft. The new-look Rock-it surf shop and art studio – currently licensed to sell only takeaway coffee (Raglan Roast), cold drinks and snacks – had its debut on Labour Weekend Saturday when Sarah and Rob launched their business to the sound of Tractor FM from its new studio upstairs, followed later by live music on the deck. The buzz and excitement of that day made six months of “hard work and dreaming” all worthwhile, they say, and there was great feedback on the venture. “We’ve all talked about this mythical place to share,” says Sarah, thinking of friends and acquaintances who’ve got brands to sell, artwork to display and talents to showcase in hospitality and music. But none of it would’ve happened if Sarah and Rob hadn’t found, after more than a year’s serious search, the lease of the Rockit shop and shed up for grabs back in March. It had exactly the kind of rustic appeal they were looking for, and belonged to longtime local Ken Thomas. Essentially, they say, they bought the Rock-it surfing label started back in the ‘80s by KT himself and fellow local identity Chris Banks – “and it fitted in nicely with Tractor FM”.

Rock-it Cafe and grounds during opening celebrations Rob, a builder, is the man behind Raglan’s alternative radio station which he set up several years ago. Tractor’s been operated from here, there and everywhere around town, he says, but “never has it had a really nice studio” like the soundproof one it’s got now looking down on their shop and café space. “This is luxury compared to what we had before,” he reckons. The couple want to bring the nearly 100-year-old shearing shed to life through music and events for Raglan people and its visitors. They aim to have it “represent Raglan” in music, food, clothing, art and accessories. The shed, originally from the local landlords farmland in Hamilton, now houses tables and booths made from dismantled sheep pens that were inside another centuryold shearing shed on Sarah’s family’s farm in Te Awamutu. Sarah, a chef, admits their inspiration to reinvent Rock-it has come from other rustic destinations such as Leigh Sawmill north

of Auckland and the Lily Pad just out of Cambridge. Soon, they too want to be able to cater for private functions while continuing to showcase local businesses – from Tony Sly pottery to Chris Meek steelwork, Tim Turner jewellery and Wiley X sunglasses. There’s still KT’s artwork and B Rex photography around too. The public also have the option of accessing Rock-it using stand-up paddle boards and kayaks. All customers need to do is paddle up the estuary on an incoming tide and climb over the back fence to enjoy an hour or two at the cafe. “We want to work on supporting the locals,” insist Sarah and Rob, who’ve lived and raised a family in Raglan more than a decade now. They’re keen to include the younger generation by making the space, inside and out, attractive and child-friendly while at the same time keeping local art on display fresh and interesting for the adults. Iemaja gets break in radio – at only seven
Y
oung Raglan Area School student Iemaja Hassell got a little slice of stardom last Saturday when she learnt the ropes at Raglan Radio alongside children’s entertainer Suzy Cato, who was in town with her team from The Great Big Kids’ Show. The seven-year-old “star” now gets to help co-host this coming Saturday morning’s show which will include everything from announcing the songs, stories and birthday shoutouts to sharing her favourite joke and chatting about Raglan. Suzy spent some time too on her visit to Raglan with “other talented folk” from the local school, commending them on their talent. “They’re all so ready to give a new experience a go and to share their voices.” The voices of the other children will be included in shows at 98.1 over the next few weeks. Suzy’s appearance in town came as a result of the Great Big Radio show competition, with teacher Gabrielle Williams co-ordinating the event and station manager Aaron Mooar facilitating. The pair are working on developing a

Ask the Artist A series of Q & A’s with our local creative talent
This week the Chronicle caught up with Brigid Allan. Describe your practice? I search through painting, my practice is often spontaneous. A quantity of thought, handful of sketches, let it sit for a day or two, shake twice, apply a bit of pressure, add a bit more pressure if needed, put on some music and then pick up a brush. I paint with acrylic and charcoal on board at present, in the past I have predominantly painted people. What are you working on at the moment? A series on the Raglan skate park ... more from a romantic realism perspective. Working from photos, my aim is to blur the real through use of colour and composition.. When did you decide to pursue a creative career? When I was 10 years old I painted a picture and wrote on the back.."one day this will be worth 1 million dollars"... hmmm ...still waiting for that one to materialise. Who are you influenced by? Apart from everyday life with my children and the highs and lows of motherhood ... at present I am influenced by the Japanese literature of Murakami, painters Peter Doig, Hernan Bas, Luc Tuymans, Pierre Bonnard, Monet and my lecturer Tim Croucher. The best piece of advice you ever got? 'Always take your rain coat and a museli bar.' Best and worst thing about being an artist? You dont have much choice in the matter. If you weren't an artist you'd probably be ? A professional dancer who is a free runner in her spare time. If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself? Haute Couture outfit by the late Alexander Macqueen or a deep sea submarine. What four famous people dead or alive would you invite for dinner? Peter Doig, Claude Monet, Frida Kahlo and Georgia O'Keefe. Who was your favorite teacher growing up and why? I do not really have one as a favourite... but if I had to pick, I would say my friends. If you could get the whole world to read one book what would it be? The Lorax by Dr.Seuss Where can we see your work? The Studeo Gallery, 21 Cross St. In November, from the 15th - 28th, I have a solo exhibition called Turf at The Studeo Gallery.

n infant food maker’s pain has become Raglan’s gain thanks to a new Karicare commercial that’s giving the town’s natural beauty, along with the relaxed lifestyle of a young local family, plenty of exposure on primetime television. Nutricia – some of whose infant products were caught up in Fonterra’s
botulism-that-wasn’t scare – recently chose Megan and Brett Wood, their 17-month-old Emmett and also fouryear-old Ava as the ideal family to help promote their Karicare Toddler formula. And the Woods, whose Wainui Road property is only a couple of minutes from sand and surf, are chuffed at the new commercial which Megan describes as “a beautiful montage of what our life is like at the moment”.
Emmett – wearing a grey onesey with “Made in Raglan” emblazoned across the chest – is shown with his family at Ngarunui Beach, Manu Bay, in the garden and at play inside their sunny home. His proud parents describe him in the advert as a product of black sand, salt air, watching waves, big puddles, tickles, rockhopping, high-fives, definitely dirt, lots of fun times “and a little helping hand from Karicare Toddler”. Megan says her sister, who works in advertising in Auckland, told her a Karicare commercial was going to be shot in Raglan and encouraged her and Brett to register their interest. An advertising agency executive checked the family’s suitability out one Thursday evening “at a pretty chaotic time”, with the kids having dinner and chocolate chippies on the go. Undeterred, the agency returned with a production crew of 17 and mobile coffee truck just a couple of Mondays ago, taking from 8.30am until 6pm to shoot the commercial at the various locations. Megan confesses the day was a little stressful. “You’ve heard the saying about never filming with animals or babies? Well, I have to confirm that’s right”.
Karicare ad featuring Brett and Emmett Wood While overall it was a “real cool” experience, she said, young Emmett became increasingly grumpy and scratchy as the day wore on. And that even with his sipper cup of milk formula. But the Woods were pleased with how the advert turned out and that friends said they “look so natural” in it. Brett, a keen surfer, is a mortgage broker working out of Ray White’s Raglan offices while Megan’s an environmental engineer who does contract work. Emmett stars in the commercial while Ava and the family cat have enjoyed the odd cameo role. Edith Symes

Warren Parker was more work than play this year as he headed across the ditch in his new role as Tasman test team manager to organise top New Zealand shearers competing in the trans-Tasman test.
But while the four days at Warrnambool Agricultural Show on the Victoria southwest coast were rewarding for Warren as a first-time manager for Shearing Sports New Zealand, the fact that “we didn’t win” the champs for the second year in a row was definitely a big disappointment. “It’s very hard to win on Aussie soil,” Warren told the Chronicle last week. But he’s hopeful the return test on home turf at the end of February next year will set the score straight. That’s at the Golden Shears International Championships, the world’s premier shearing and woolhandling event downcountry in Masterton where the Kiwis again take on the Aussies. Warren’s spent a lifetime shearing in the district and farming on what was originally his grandfather’s property in Parker Access Road. He admits he was honoured recently to become the Tasman team
manager responsible first-up for organising the three shearers, two wool-handlers and two judges on the annual trans-Tasman trip. All competitors had been winners in the Golden Shears Champs, the NZ Merino Champs and the PGG Wrightson National Shearing Circuit which celebrate excellence in the skill of shearing, Warren adds, and it was his job to smooth their way for success in the rural sport. But from now until February’s Golden Shears event where he’ll do it all again, Warren will be busy organising local (Waikato) shearing gangs as usual and occasionally filling in as a shearer after 30 years in the game. “I call myself the spare parts man,” he quips. He’s involved too in the running of other events after Golden Shears, he says, for instance at Auckland’s Easter Show and the Kumeu Show in which the computer system scoring is his forte. Warren has also been very involved for the past 15 years in running Raglan’s Western Shears competition – part of the PGG Wrightson circuit – but with declining entries and sponsorship in recent times the 45-year tradition at the local rugby grounds came to an end after last January’s show. has gone on offer at Xtreme Waste now the nationwide, Governmentfunded TV TakeBack scheme has kicked in locally to coincide with the digital switchover in the upper North Island. Locals will pay just $5 of the usual $15 to get rid of their outdated sets for the next couple of months at the Te Hutewai Road recycling and transfer station, thanks to the Government initiative which is subsidising the cost. Xtreme Waste co-manager Rick Thorpe – encouraging locals to take up the “unique opportunity” – pointed out last week it was not only a good chance to clear out the shed or bach but also very important from an environmental point of view to get rid of old TVs. The glass screens contained lead, he said, which could be bad for health when leached from landfill into the ground and waterways. The lead was important in industry though, and could be reused from the screens where it acted as a human safety mechanism against the powerful cathode rays behind. Both old TVs and old computers
were of “pretty crude” technology by today’s standards, he said, whereas flatscreens had no lead and were based on a completely different science. Raglan Area School and Raglan Kindergarten – as part of the Enviroschools network – can also cash in on the TV TakeBack scheme, with a Samsung technology package and other prizes up for grabs for participation. Rick urged residents to remember to vote for them when dropping their old sets at Xtreme Waste. Environment Minister Amy Adams said last week the upper North Island initiative involved 23 Waikato sites along with 27 in Northland, 18 in Auckland and 10 in the Bay of Plenty. “The low cost of televisions and the switch from analogue to digital television is creating a surge in unwanted sets,” she said. “The Government has recognised this as a potential growing waste problem, so we have committed money to encourage residents to responsibly recycle their televisions.” Waikato District Council already subsidises disposal of old televisions, and without its funding the cost per set at Xtreme Waste would normally be $25. In line with the Council’s goal of having zero waste by 2020, the Raglan office has managed to reduce its waste by more than 80 per cent in the past month. Raglan Customer Delivery Team Leader Steve Soanes says they have achieved this by making simple changes which were initiated by the team’s Librarian, Merren Tait. “Merren is very passionate about this cause and has brought in a lot of great ideas such as ensuring that everything that can be recycled is put out for collection each week, takeaway coffee cups and plastic bags are reused, and note paper is made from recycled paper. “Other changes include lining rubbish bins with recycled paper instead of plastic bags and placing cardboard
boxes alongside rubbish bins at each desk to capture all paper waste, which is then emptied into the recycle bin.” However the initiative which has proved the most effective is the newly installed worm farm, which takes care of all the food and paper towel waste in the office and keeps the worms happy. But why stop at just solid waste? The Raglan team is also tackling water and power waste by using minimal water to wash dishes and ensuring computers and monitors are turned off at the end of the day. Dishwashing water is also left in the sink for the next person to use, unnecessary lighting is switched off and use of the hot water zip kept to a minimum. Mr Soanes says he hopes others will be inspired to follow their lead. “What we have achieved shows that you don’t have to make monumental changes to make a difference – all the little things do really count.”
Alas the weather and sea conditions have been such over the last six weeks that none of us have been able to fish off our coast outside the bar. But it is about to change, boats went today and we are going tomorrow, so I will add an appendage to this report updating fishing and conditions. From my diary each year we are usually fishing for snapper due west of the bar and in about 50m of depth. Newsflash… We fished today (the 4th) and binned up on snapper at 50m as predicted, took just over three hours. Caught kahawai, gurnard and a large trevally. There were about ten boats in our area. Guess what, going again tomorrow.. Harbour fishing was great over the holidays, we had a lot of fun, best fish was a 5lb trevally caught on a light weight kid’s rod, in five feet of water. Other fish caught were more trevally, yellow eyed mullet, snapper, kahawai, gurnard and eels. Lit a fire on the beach at Eel Creek where the Fairmile hull is, wrapped the kahawai in foil, kids ate them along with sausage, and heated marshmallows. Netting days we got feeds of yellow bellied flounder, but a lot of net rubbish due to high tides and upper harbour creeks in flood. There has been a late run of whitebait being caught in quantities, Aotea, Kawhia and Port Waikato had similar reports. Season finishes on the 30th November. The Raglan harbour bar sector light has been repaired and is operating correctly. There are many fishing related events up and coming in Raglan. Two are of importance to all recreational fishers, firstly Coastguard Raglan Bar Safety Day and secondly the certification and updating of Hamilton and Raglan weigh masters. Paul Batten of the New Zealand Sports Fishing Council Management Committee and possibly the most experienced weigh master in New Zealand will be the tutor for this course. The correct weighing of fish is critical for local Club Records, New Zealand and International Records, and must be done in a documented, accurate, and courteous manner. Adventure Racing in Rio for DK
Big turnout over threats off coast It was standing-room only for about 60 locals for a full two and a half hours as hundreds packed the Raglan town hall on Tuesday night to protest the looming threats of sand mining and oil drilling off our coast. The meeting – briefed among others by Tainui academic and activist Angeline Greensill, Greenpeace’s Steve Abel,
Raglan Sport Fishing Club’s Sheryl Hart and KASM president Phil McCabe – made unanimous declarations against the twin environmental threats. Oil and gas explorer Anadarko – which is about to drill for oil directly off Raglan – was a notable no-show but locals heard organisers would call another meeting if Anadarko or TTR, which is undertaking strip seabed mining, wanted to “consult”. C
hampion surfer and all round water man Daniel Kereopa headed off to Brazil last week to compete in the grueling Rocky Man Adventure Race Challenge. The international race involves 15 teams form Brazil and five international teams from USA, France, Argentina, Spain and New Zealand. “I was invited by a lady called Jess Simpson, who basically called me up to ask if I wanted to go to Brazil and I was like… hell yeah” said Daniel. The race involves different stages including, mountain biking, SUP, rock climbing, women’s and men’s mountain running, surfing and outrigger canoe. The five member team from NZ will compete both individually and collectively in the different events. Daniel is set to be competing in the surfing and SUP stages as well as the collective running and canoe events. Lat year team New Zealand was ranked sixth out of the 20 teams competing. A highly strategic and extreme race that is both a physical and mental challenge, the event is aimed at giving competitors something new to conquer every year. In 2012 one of the stages involved paragliding, where the competitor was required to run up to the top of a cliff and then paraglide down. The day will start at 7am with the surfing event, which will have a Le Mans start involving a 2km run before the heats. The faster the run the more time competitors have in the surf. Following on, there will be a 45km mountain biking stage, an 8-10km SUP, 23 km women’s mountain run, 8km men’s mountain run, 12km team outrigger canoe and finishing with a 10km team race run over mixed terrain. Heading into the race, Daniel was excited to be staying with third degree black belt holder and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend, Marcelo Lopes during his time in Rio. Starting on November 8 and running all day on November 9, Daniel was looking forward to seeing Brazil and conquering the Rocky Man Challenge. Maki Nishiyama

I don’t like going out of town but Te Awamutu’s roses are stunning. All our young plants are flourishing too, just powering away. The ground is warm enough for pumpkins, butternuts and cups, water melons, rock and honey dew melons, cucumbers, squash, basil, chilies and peppers. You say "Seagull, we only have a little garden!" Mine will be planted in December, I feel it is still too cool at night. Moisture is still a major requirement along with weeding. Now is the time to mulch with pea straw; tomatoes to roses, mulch them all as mulch holds moisture and controls weeds. Water potted plants, tubs, raised beds, and light soils, because of the wind and rising temperatures they are drying out overnight. Pests need controlling, slugs, snails, slaters, aphids are more prevalent now and have the best choices in their diets. Some plants are starting to bolt, silverbeet, parsley, they need picking back or they will go to seed and die back. Pirongia Forest Park and surrounding farmland in 2014 What’s happening Since the last control operation in 2007, possum numbers in Pirongia Forest Park and on surrounding farmland have increased, impacting on native plant life and animal habitats. In response, Waikato Regional Council and the Department of Conservation (DOC) plan to carry out possum control: • on private land surrounding Pirongia Forest Park from early 2014 • in Pirongia Forest Park, the Mangakino block and Te Kauri Park Scenic Reserve during winter 2014.
pOssUM nUMBeRs Up in the FORest paRK Possum abundance is measured using a residual trap catch index (RTCI). This index comes from the number of possums caught per 100 traps set, so a lower number indicates fewer possums. RTCI is measured before and after a control operation. An RTCI of 0.4 per cent was achieved in Pirongia Forest Park after possum control was undertaken in 2007. This has now increased to 7 per cent. Possum numbers on the surrounding farmland range from 9 to 17 per cent RTCI. If this trend continues, these numbers are likely to double within the next two years.

COntROl WORK On pRiVate land (staRting eaRly 2014) Waikato Regional Council has recently sought tenders for possum control in the Pirongia North (9,800ha) and Pirongia West (4,750ha) farmland buffers, Oparau (11,450ha) and Waipa-Puniu II (10,400ha) Priority Possum Control Areas (PPCAs). Maintenance control will also be carried out in the Ngutunui PPCA. This work is scheduled for 2014/15.
Preference will be given to methods that control possums as well as rats and stoats, which also decimate our native plants and animals.
The control methods will be determined through the tender process. It’s expected they will be flexible enough to address any concerns landowners may have. We will inform landowners of the tender results.

Waikato Regional Council and DOC staff have been communicating with iwi, adjoining landowners, user groups and wider stakeholders in the community to discuss the detail of this operation, and will continue to do so.
Ground based control work in the Mangakara block will continue to be carried out by the Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society with support from DOC. Ground based control will also be used in the Te Tahi Stream catchment.
