Free look-around offered at museum ahead of opening But those wanting to see surfing memorabilia – which are destined to be the waterfront museum’s point of difference – will have to wait a while longer. Various surfing exhibits are earmarked for the upper floor of the two-storey building, but at this stage it remains largely empty. “We’re moving in gradually,” says Raglan & District Museum Society president Pat Day. The society promises to have old surfing magazines and printed t-shirts from the Point Boardriders Club back in the ‘60s on display, along with surfboards shaped in the ‘70s by then local surfer Don Wilson. Meantime Raglan’s pioneering fire appliance – a portable waterpump on top of a wheelbarrow – is among other new exhibits for the museum. The lightweight precursor to today’s fire engines could also be used by women from the Home Guard in wartime. The refurbished switchboard stands alongside heritage photographs of Raglan’s first post office, which stood in the area now occupied by the library and council offices. The post office was the building local artist Jenny Rhodes grew up in because her father was then the postmaster. A taiaha or traditional Maori weapon – presented to the Wallis family and now in the custody of the museum – is of special significance to the museum’s collections, adds Pat. It was used by Ngati Mahanga ancestors in the land wars to ensure there

was no violence in Raglan to settlers, either Maori or Pakeha. Pat is hoping too to have apothecary jars and bottles belonging to Raglan’s first chemist, T B Hill, on display by Saturday. Some still contain the laudanum and opium used last century. Sadly however, he says, quite a lot of the old museum’s reserve collection was lost 18 months ago in the fire at the wharf, where it was stored in one of the sheds which burnt down. A Raglan Whaingaroa timeline dating from the year 1100 to 2011 has been painstakingly put together by museum society committee member Rodger Gallagher.

As the society’s digital co-ordinator, Rodger will also be responsible for installing a video system a little further down the track with access to iconic movie clips and stills from the likes of ‘Endless Summer’ and the recently released ‘Last Paradise’ by Clive Neeson, which has footage from 40-odd years ago when he was growing up here. The building, which makes extensive use of macrocarpa internally, includes a library and research area downstairs and an office-cum-meeting room next to it. Both have sea views, leaving the darker interior of the museum for exhibits best kept out of direct sunlight. However the building’s only large picture window that shows off its stunning water frontage is at the entrance to the museum which it shares with that of the i-site.

Pat says the museum – in which video surveillance cameras have just been installed – will be a huge asset to Raglan, which he describes as now an “internationally recognised” town. But good things can come at a cost. Because the museum society is a nonprofit charity which receives no operational funding from local or central government, a fee of $2 for adults and $1 for children will be charged at the door from this coming Sunday. Saturday’s free look-around precedes an official opening to be performed by Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson at an unconfirmed date. However there will still be an element of formality on Saturday, with an early morning blessing by representatives of Ngati Mahanga to welcome taonga or treasured artefacts to the new museum. Everyone is welcome to attend the 7am ceremony, Pat says, and can tour the building from 10am when the relocated isite opens its doors.

By 10 am nearly 20 women, some with babies and toddlers in tow, were busy fossicking through boxes of ‘treasures’ given by the community to create Christmas gifts. For inspiration a table was set aside with craft and Christmas project books to look through. One young mum had already attached herself to a sewing machine and was underway constructing a table hut. The completed version was proving popular with toddlers to escape into. Other mums were rummaging through jars of old-fashion ‘bling’ thinking of ways to turn the trinkets, buttons and lace into Christmas decorations galore. Maree Haworth and a friend were concentrating on cutting out heart shapes from material to sew and stuff into gifts. “It’s a lot of fun to come along here and try something new”, said Maree. Areas in the hall were set aside for childcare with volunteers helping to keep an eye on the children while Mum got busy. SEW-vember happens each Thursday this month at the Union Church Hall, Stewart Street. Come along and be inspired! Top to Bottom ( L - R): Maree Haworth and Jo Wallis and the ‘table hut’ below

Tea-towel sales support Recording studio with families with new babies a view Raglan local Tom McCormick has been very busy recently, having just put the finishing touches to his new recording studio at his home in Bay View Road.

Katrina Denize, owner of ‘Husk’, in Wainui Road, knows doubly what it feels like in those early post-baby days. Nineteen months ago she gave birth to twin boys, Sam and Oscar, born six weeks prem. She spent a month in hospital with the boys and can still remember just how grateful she felt for all the help she received in those early days. “We were lucky. I had my mum move in and friends helping in all sorts of ways”, says Katrina. She remembers vividly how the simple act of having a meal cooked for her family made such a difference to how she managed some days. So when Katrina heard that ‘Bellyful’, a national not-for-profit group committed to delivering free home cooked meals to families with new babies, was marketing tea-towels to raise funds she jumped at the chance to sell them at her shop. Three tea-towel designs are available at a cost of $15 each or all three for $40. Called Froot, Chocolit and Iscrem they are the works of art by designers aged 6 – 10 years. Bellyful has been operating two years now and in that time has delivered more than 1200 meals. Branches have been established throughout New Zealand. Founder Jacqui Ritchie is keen to meet anyone who might be interested in starting a branch in Raglan. “I know in cooking a family dinner, a

She’s just had her first book, ‘That good eh?’, published and is pondering another but Les Drower’s advice to wannabe authors is different than you might expect – “don’t”. There’s a declining market for writing and publishing books, she says, and it’s largely the fault of the internet. “Eventually it’ll all be e-books,” believes the Raglan resident of five years. Les however, who describes herself as “a young 60-ish”, admits she personally likes to have the hard copy of a book. And she’s enjoyed writing the story of the fictional Lumas family, she says, on and off in her spare time while living in Raglan and working at Bryant Retreat in Cliff Street. “It’s just something I wanted to do,” she says simply. Les comes from Te Awamutu, and set the story of the family’s trials and tribulations in the neighbouring town of Kihikihi which she also knows well. Pirongia comes into the drama too, giving the story an added local flavour. The plot takes a look at some of the troubles of teenagers growing up in a small town, and Liz is pleased with the end result. “It is a lighthearted downto-earth story relaying the dynamics of a modern family,” she says, “and sympathetically touches on some of the problems of society today”.

“I wanted to keep it a real easy-toread book,” she explains, “and I had younger adults in mind when I wrote it.” Les belonged to Raglan’s writing group for a time which was good, she says, but it clashed with her sleepovers at work. She’d now like to try her hand at writing some articles for newspapers and magazines. *Les hopes to have a stall at Sunday’s Creative Market at the Old School Arts Centre, where she’ll be selling her book at the special price of $14. It will be available locally after that, at Raglan Book & Gift Centre. Edith Symes

Heritage on Houchen Road When Trevor Vernon and partner Janet Scott built their new home in Raglan they took with them a piece of history from the old Vernon homestead at Te Mata.

water-colour book.

A large slab of Kauri, originally part of a water-tank and then used by Trevor’s dad as the counter at his home butchery business, has a new lease of life as an office desk at their new abode. It is a reminder for the couple of a lifestyle and a homestead history spanning several generations of the Vernon clan in the Te Mata district.

One bedroom holds a special treat. The architect was also a fine painter and several of his paintings hang on a wall.

Now, this remarkable home and surrounds, a ‘gem in Te Mata’, sits waiting for its own new start.

“Our grandfather and Sholto were friends. He got these originals and gave them to my mother, says Trevor.

Sue Russell

The homestead itself is impressive but not in a grand way. It is a home that would settle well into being lived in by children. When stepping inside, the integrity toward a special style of architecture is immediately apparent. The style, known as Arts and Crafts architecture was popularised in North America during 1900 – 1930. It was built in 1935 with upstairs additions, sympathetic to the original footprint, added in the late 40’s and early 50’s. Designed by acclaimed Canadian Arts and Crafts architect Sholto Smith, who left a legacy of notable commercial and private dwellings in Auckland, the house is unique in this area. Leadlight windows throughout are simply stunning – the colour palate is bold but not overbearing. Looking out through the lounge windows framing Mt Karioi the pictureperfect scene could easily be lifted out of a

Leadlight windows feature

He adds that when he sells the house the paintings will go with it. Shutters are a real feature of the architect and the style. “It’s just wonderful all the original features have been kept, says Janet. The surrounding house sections, expansive gardens, and park-like spaces must have been the ‘stuff of dreams’ for young children playing hide and seek. Wild daffodils sprinkle colour through the house paddock. Taking pride of place is an old tractor Trevor says was ‘dragged up’ years ago from Te Mata School where it served faithfully as part of the play equipment. It seems happy with its situation! 30 year old avocado trees down the back are bursting with fruit –

Animal Health Column For Raglan People + their Pets

Te Uku School, Friday 4th November

THE GOOD NEWS FOR WEIGHT LOSS Obesity has become a common problem in our pets today. The usual causes are overfeeding and lack of physical exercise. Old age, breed type, medical problems and castrating/spaying can all contribute to increased weight gain. A balanced nutritious diet and maintaining a healthy weight are essential for the well-being and longevity of our pets, just as it is for us. For dogs and cats, being overweight can have negative effects on livelihood and is associated with many common diseases such as diabetes, arthritis/joint problems, heart disease, breathing problems and skin problems. Treats and “human food can cause pets to put on weight quickly and should be avoided. The good news is that several specially formulated diets for weight loss are available for both cats and dogs. They provide all nutritional requirements in a lower calorie formula while still filling the animal up and passing the taste test! They are available in both canned and biscuit form. With a reduced energy intake and appropriate activity level, weight reduction can be achieved safely. A pet’s ideal weight varies depending on size, age and breed. Talk to your vet for advice regarding your pets ideal weight, how to achieve this and how you can monitor it. We run the free Petfit program at our clinics, which is a great new tool to guide and monitor weight loss. Upon registering you receive advice and a plan for your animals dietary management. Free regular weigh-ins at the clinic will assess progress and help keep pets on the right track. The information will also be accessible to you online. Bring in your pet to sign up today! You will be delighted with the results.

certainly had to work for the winnings. 29th October saw us playing our 3rd Aggregate event, The “Jack & Jill’ Pairs. With our club having more men than women as members it was always going to be that some of the men were having to be ‘Ladies’ ...and of course this always sparks the ongoing comments throughout the day (just to keep them on their toes like), great banter. On Saturday 19th November we are hosting the Waikato Centre Men’s Open Pairs at our club. Now these guys seriously know how to play bowls ...Man they are great to watch, so come along and enjoy the spectacle. Our First session of Corner to Corner went well with 9 challengers taking part. Bill Bond was our first week’s winners’ and was awarded his Grants Whiskey trophy accordingly”. REMINDER: BUSINESS HOUSE BOWLS start on Tuesday 15th November at 5.45pm. OPINION: Remembering Labour Day by Ian McKissack Labour Day passed with little attention because we were so puffed up with pride that we are now one point better than the rest of the world, as measured by rugby. It would have been more if Dan Carter had taken better care of his groin, a lesson to all of us. Take care of your body for New Zealand. Labour Day needs to be remembered because it marks the battles of the past that obtained reasonable pay, hours and other conditions for working people. It is particularly important now as these gains are gradually being lost to ensure that the ’economy’ thrives. I envisage the economy as a large demanding baby that would take over the world if it could. Perhaps it has succeeded.

The best contribution that I’ve heard recently on talkback radio recently is a guy who said why don’t we talk about society, not just the economy. When we talk about the economy the discussion centres on money and how to make more. Talking about society moves our focus to people and the conditions of their lives. There is a connection between the background to Labour Day and the small protest in Aotea square Our small sit in mirrors the Wall Street demonstrations against bankers and the camp on the steps of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. At heart all of these ask the same question as the old protests we should have remembered on Labour Day. What sort of society do we want?

letters

Dear Editor,

THANK YOU.

This letter is in response to a remark overheard in Raglan Four Square last week.

Kaiwhakaaraara Roopu the Visual Arts Students and tutor Heeni Kerekere of Te Wananga o Aotearoa would like to thank and acknowledge the overwelming support from the Raglan Community and general public in helping realize our fundraising efforts to travel to Melbourne for an Art and Cultural exchange in November this year and the year 2 & 3 Students Art Exhibition “Tu Ora” which is on display at Raglan Communtiy Arts Centre this week.

I wish to express my support for the grocery shopping experience in our local supermarket. I have been hearing comments like “it’s too expensive to shop in Raglan!” By all means when in Hamilton it makes sense to do a buy up over there, for myself, I am happy to purchase my/our needs from our own local Four Square Supermarket and I know of many others who do so as well. The prices here for groceries, if you purchase a cheaper brand, are all good and often as cheap, bread at $1.85 per loaf is great value, milk is no dearer than anyone else and watch the weekly specials and stock up on some you use more. Those specials are very good value. I have always found the veggies to be good value and fresher than some of the larger supermarkets in Hamilton. The staff are always friendly helpful and cheerful. I want to encourage locals and visitors to enjoy the shopping experiences out here in Raglan an drown the voices of any detractors. One happy shopper. N Wells, Raglan. Dear Editor, Recently, I parked in the carpark at the end of Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive, Raglan. I noticed the Waikato District Council sign on the gateway, that states the gates will be locked at dusk. As it was still about 2 hours until dusk, that being, the darkest part of twilight just after sunset, I knew I had plenty of time for my beach walk. How wrong I was!! ‘Nek minute’!’ - a woman who claimed she had the authority to do so, locked my car in and stated that she would unlock it at 8 o’clock the NEXT MORNING! As I work in Hamilton at that time, this was not an option and besides it wasn’t yet dusk! To be confronted, verbally abused and to have my property detained was not acceptable, nor legal. So, come on council sort this matter out!! How many visitors have been subjected to this treatment? Is this an acceptable face for our tourism industry and a manner in which people should be treated? If you have had a similar type of experience please let the council know in writing, either by dropping a letter into the council buildings, Bow St., Raglan or emailing them on publicenquiries@waidc.govt.nz. We want the freedom to park safely at the beach! Concerned resident, J.Freeman, Raglan

Also thank you to Poihakena Marae and whanau, our kaumatua, our guest artists this year Julie Tipene OToole, Ellis Aranga and Henare King, Tania Black, also to all our whanau supporters, friends and finally to all the whanau of Kaiwhakaaraara. Without you all, none of this would be possible or worth it...we love you all and thank you again, so very much for all your support Kaiwhakaaraara Roopu / Heeni Kerekere, Raglan

Dear Editor, May I take the opportunity, through your column, of once again thanking all those who responded to our “Curtains For Cold Homes” project by providing warm curtains. Without your help this service would not be possible. Special thanks to Barbara Russell of Russell Recycling for your generous contribution. It is good to have been able to have assisted 13 families this year to have warmer environments, and, we trust, better health as a result. The project is now in recess until colder weather next May. Yours sincerely, Julia Brown, Raglan (for Whaingaroa Affordable Housing Trust)
