I'll be interested to see what relevance salt water has to explaining why over a $1m is being spent to fit meters in Raglan." Rodger has just released a reply he received 5 days later, implying it has no relevance. Instead it explains, "Any discussions on installing water meters in Raglan have been driven by their function as a water conservation tool which can prompt us to think about how much water we use." No wonder Clint didn't want to give that explanation. It makes little more sense than his salt water story. So it seems there's no shortage of water in Raglan, but they're installing expensive meters (at least they will if they can get radio to work underground!) to "prompt us to think". It makes me think we should protest against this and the councillor who approved it without understanding it. Up till Friday 84.6% of Raglan hadn't voted. While I strongly support water conservation measures I don't subscribe to the idea that we need these very expensive devices. Wes forging top navy diving career

here wouldn’t be many careers where you have to experience the depths to reach the heights, but Raglan born and bred Wes Moir’s doing just that. The 22-year-old aspires to be a commanding officer of the Royal New Zealand Navy Operational Dive Team (ODT) – and after he recently passed a gruelling 16-week training course with flying colours, that’s now more than a pipe dream. While he knows there are many challenges ahead to reach his ultimate goal, Wes takes quiet pride in the fact he’s now a qualified navy diver and one of only three of this year’s intake to make it through what’s known as the hardest course at the Devonport Naval Base dive school. With just 14 navy diver candidates selected from a rigorous screening process of 400 applicants, the course demands huge physical and mental stamina. But toughest of all, Wes says, was Endurance Week designed to “push you to the limit … to make or break you”. From Monday to Friday of week two, he survived on six hours’ sleep and was underwater up to 10 hours a day. The training course which included mud runs and a lot of swimming was offset by theory tests at the end of each week, and there was always the “prepping” of gear for the next dive. Nor was there such a thing as a weekend off, Wes told the Chronicle – getting ready for the following week’s challenge was paramount.

During the course Wes was trained in mine counter measure diving – a skill that allows him to dive to depths of up to 54 metres to locate underwater mines – deploying from helicopters directly in the water to neutralise floating mines, diving physics and underwater engineering. There was also an introduction to explosive ordnance disposal and ordnance recognition. Hamilton Boys’ High educated, Wes joined the navy four years ago as an officer specialising in navigation, but was always keen to sub-specialise in diving. So it was a proud moment when he received the top award – a Maori tekoteko, or carved figure – on graduation recently. Held above the tekoteko’s head is a sea mine which gives it a diving sea warrior identity and is the symbol of the navy Operational Diving Team. As a new member of that team, Wes has already completed work diving off Whangarei Heads trying to locate old sea mines from World War One. He can now specialise in mine clearance diving, underwater engineering or inshore maritime support. Meantime Wes is off to the UK next year where he’ll develop his passion for military diving at Portsmouth Naval Base, training to become a mine clearance diving officer. The opportunity to travel the world is one of the plusses of a naval career, says Wes, and last year he was on board HMNZS Endeavour – a refuelling ship – as head officer of the watch (00W1) in the biennial Rimpac or Rim of the Pacific exercise off Hawaii.

Te Mata farm set to host national offroading finals Raglan’s reputation as a magnet for extreme sports spreads inland at Labour Weekend with the national offroad racing championship finals set to be raced over challenging country at Te Mata. The “bumps and holes” of Michael and Nick Carter’s Waimaori Road farm and the lure of national titles are expected to draw anything from 60 to 100 offroad racers from as far afield as Whangarei, and south of Invercargill. Waikato Offroad Racing Club president Alan Hilliam says the third and final round at Te Mata – the first was at Meremere and the second in the Gwavas Forest near Napier – will determine the national champions in around a dozen classes and also New Zealand’s overall champion offroader. The Saturday of Labour Weekend will be devoted to short-course racing, with three races per class and two 15-lap feature races over the short course. On the Sunday there’ll be a 170km “all in” enduro that Alan says will probably run for about 3½ hours. While national attention will focus on competitors like Hamish Lawlor, last year’s overall champion offroader, local interest will centre on the Raglan Renegades – a team of local enthusiasts who’ll be turning out in the green and black colours of Raglan rugby “to get the community behind us”.

His single-seater buggy, powered by a 1300cc Toyota engine, is leading the class nationally, but the South Islanders are an unknown quantity as they have no class 5 races leading up to the finals. Others in the Raglan Renegades are Jamian’s brother Dan, also from Waingaro and racing a VW buggy in a challenger class, and Nick Carter who’s competing not only on his home track but also in a home-built single-seater. He will race in class 3, which is for offroaders of up to 1640cc.

Jamian and Nick teamed up mid last month in a 1000km offroad race in Taupo. Alan Hilliams says offroading is a very exciting spectator sport, with the competitors getting way off the ground and “bouncing around” as they battle not only one another but also the bumps and holes of the track. “It’s pure pleasure [for the drivers], they’re not doing it for any big money,” he says. Spectators at Labour Weekend’s finals will be able to park their vehicles at Te Mata Domain, from where local transport will be provided to the racetrack. Edith Symes

Signs spring up as KASM warns time to act is now

RMA - economy at the expense of the environment

‘NO Seabed Mining’ signs have sprung up around Raglan in an eleventh-hour bid by Kiwis Against Seabed Mining to build support in the fight against an international giant which in two weeks will apply for marine consent to mine the iron-rich sands off the south Taranaki coast.

Around 40 people came to the Bowling Club on Thursday to hear Green Party environment spokesperson, Eugenie Sage, MP, urge them to write to their local MPs about the Government's proposed changes to the Resource Management Act (RMA), our main environmental and planning law.

It’s time to “engage”, says Kasm chairperson Phil McCabe, who’s urging locals to register online now with the Raglan-based incorporated society and help fight the move by Trans-Tasman Resources (TTR). If the seabed mining is allowed by the Environmental Protection Authority, says Phil, it will set a precedent for further activity north, to Raglan and beyond. Phil’s convinced that with the support of locals prepared to put in submissions, and the expertise of Kasm’s legal and scientific team, TTR’s “ambitious” application to mine the west coast of New Zealand can be stopped. The company’s go-ahead is not guaranteed, Phil insists, and he sees “big holes” in the plan as far as environmental effects are concerned. “We have a pretty dynamic environment here,” he says of west coast swells and currents, “and they (TTR) need to understand it much better before digging.” Meanwhile, timely support for the cause has come this week from keen Italian tramper Tommasi Lizzi who stayed overnight on Sunday at Solscape Eco Retreat before continuing his 3000km walk the length of New Zealand in support of Kasm. He’s hoping to raise public awareness of seabed mining, and his progress can be followed on facebook’s Te Araroa Trail Against Seabed Mining. “A long way to go, a long way to learn by nature,” is the mantra by which he walks. Phil this week also urged residents to erect signs of support for Kasm on their own

A Kasm signwriting workshop during ‘Sustainable September’ provided the catalyst for several of the signs now on display. Phil told the Chronicle there’s only a 20 working-day window of opportunity for submissions – from the end of this month and into November – once TTR has lodged the application it’s talked about since 2005. “Now is the time to engage,” he says,” because the time to act is just a few weeks away.” Edith Symes

became law in 1991. Now under National the RMA had become a political football because the Government is not interested in building cross party support for any changes. Eugenie said if the Greens were part of Government in 2014 they would seek to reverse National's changes which weakened the RMA. The other speaker at the meeting, Malibu Hamilton of Whaingaroa Environmental Defence, gave an example of a local proposal thrown out by the Environment Court. As the evidence about noise disturbance was based on 'amenity', the Court couldn't consider it in future. Malibu also mentioned the seabed mining proposed for Taranaki, which could be extended here in a few years, with restricted opportunities to object. Malibu opposed the proposed changes to the Environment Court procedures and the 10 day notice for objections on the non notified consents. At present there's little delay for the 94% of 'non-notified' applications and only 1% are appealed. Therefore he and Eugenie both thought the claims for faster decisionmaking were much exaggerated, but slightly faster decisions would be at the expense of fair decisions protecting the environment. Several questions mentioned that environmental quality is being lost, even before further weakening of the RMA. Eugenie said that despite National's coalition partners saying they don't support the weakening of the RMA's key principles, the Minister is intent on pushing ahead. Eugenie encouraged everyone to take part in the democratic process, including the current local elections. So far the RMA amendments are just proposals. Eugenie said National's proposed RMA changes posed a serious threat to the environment and would erode local democracy and public participation. "The changes to the core principles at the heart of the RMA will twist it into a law which promotes economic development at the environment's expense, rather than enabling development while safeguarding environmental bottomlines." The changes include removing any reference to "amenity values" and requiring outstanding natural features and landscapes to be specifically identified for them to be recognised in any resource consent decisions. She said the proposed law changes would also strengthen landowners' rights, make it harder for Councils to have rules controlling land and water use and would increase the Minister's power to direct changes to Council plans. Eugenie lives in Christchurch and gave the example of CERA allowing heritage buildings to be demolished without any opportunity for the community to have a say, even when the buildings could be made safe. This took power away from the community. The RMA became law in 1991. At that time it was supported by both Labour's Geoffrey Palmer and National's Simon Upton (former Raglan MP) and as unanimously supported by all MPs during its final stages in Parliament before it

The Sports Project: A series of Q & A’s with top sports people in our community

Tell us about the significance of winning the Amelia Kereopa Memorial Cup? The cup represents "outstanding leadership for the Raglan Sports Netball Club". It was really nice to win it again, I like helping people and the fact that it was in memorial of my Nan, a great leader and nice lady just made it special. What has been the highlight of your netball seasons? Probably getting picked for the NZ Netball Squad. Also playing with friends. What other sports have you been involved in? Everything! Surfing, Touch, Basketball, everything!

This week the Chronicle starts a new series of Q and A interviews with high achieving sports people, past or present, in our community. We begin by talking to the talented Naumai Kereopa Lloyld who is 15 years old and has been selected for the under 16 NZ Netball Development Squad. Naumai attends Raglan Area School and plays for the local Raglan Sports Netball Club where she recently was presented with the Amelia Kereopa Memorial Cup for outstanding leadership and the Most Valuable Player trophy for her team the 'Karioi Ferns'. What age were you when you first started playing netball? About five or six. How did you get involved in the sport? Just played heaps at school in P.E and joined everything I thought would be fun. Who was your first coach? I think it was my mum. Has sport been encouraged in your family as you have grown up? I grew up with sports, my entire family plays sport, we split our family in half and play each other on Christmas Day

What advice would you give younger girls who are wanting to excel at netball? Just have fun, and always work on your skills, go to rep trials and anything that's out there. Do all you can for what you want. Tell us about your current involvement with Raglan Sports Netball Club? I played for the team called Karioi Ferns, I also help out here and there, last year I helped train my younger sister's team, which was fun. Who do you feel inspired by? I don't really have a role model, I look at people that have done well for themselves, that's what inspires me. What are your future plans and goals beyond finishing school? One of my goals is to complete school with whatever I need for the future. Future plans, maybe go to university or maybe become a professional netball player. I don't really mind, I'll just go with the flow.

Te Uku ‘resort’ is the cat’s whiskers When it came to a tossup between buying a nice stereo system to complement the TV or a carpeted cat gym with tunnels and nooks for their feline friends to nestle in, it was the cat gym that won hands down for sisters Carol and Lynda Millar. And while Lynda is the undisputed “cat person” of the household, Carol has happily resigned herself to the felinedominated lifestyle they share just off SH23 at Te Uku. “My life is cat hair,” Carol told the Chronicle, not looking too bothered about it. The two animal-lovers have a background in pet care around town so it’s not surprising they opened nine months ago Raglan’s first-ever cattery – the Blue Cottage Cat Resort – on their picturesque three-acre property. And a quick glance at the business calendar shows there’s no shortage of bookings to juggle between their respective jobs downtown at the dental clinic and the medical centre. Blue is the colour of both their cottage and cattery, which once housed vehicles not cats. It’s nothing like a garage now, containing five upstairs/downstairs cages or cat apartments inside, complete with heated pet beds for pampered moggies. The beds have a special

low-wattage warmth, Carol explains, so their short or long stayers don’t overheat. Three of the cages in which the cats are enclosed at night are in a Clearlite-clad garage extension while the others are through a door in what was the garage itself, along with a bit of a lounge area where Carol and Lynda can sit and brush cats or just give them some attention. Cats are “complex, demanding and fussy” creatures, Carol says, so that’s exactly what they cater for. It was Carol’s job at Raglan vet clinic for a few years that prompted the sisters’ move from town to country. They bought the property because they acquired so many animals from the vets. Not only do they have six cats of their own – hence the cat gym in their living room – but also a dog, two donkeys, three sheep and a duck. And it was while working at the vets that Carol also saw the need for a pet stay close to town. “Wouldn’t it be nice to have our own kennels or cattery,” she mused, envisaging something a lot more luxurious than a simple collection of cat cages stacked one on top of the other. With their hobby business thriving, the pair reckon they could extend the cattery further, but don’t want to – err – overstretch themselves. “We’ll see how it goes.” Already they have a sixth

cat cage in a spare room of their house for that extra boarder, or one that may be sick or needy. They maintain an interest in the welfare of Raglan’s pooches through their dog obedience classes downtown on the corner of John and Wallis Streets, which now that daylight saving’s here, have started up again. In Brief: Votes taken locally right up to midday Saturday

If you didn’t get your local elections voting papers in the mail by last night (Wednesday), no worries – you can drop them off at Waikato District Council’s Raglan office right up until noon this Saturday. Electoral officer Maria Edgar has confirmed the Raglan office, like other council offices, will be open on Saturday to accept completed voting papers in their distinctive orange freepost envelopes. Yesterday was the last day for posting the envelopes. Preliminary results of most elections are expected to be available later this Saturday, but the official declaration of results won’t come out until Thursday of next week.

Knights give Raglan a sneak preview of new tunes

Knights of the Dub Table Frontman: Mr Samysamson

Electro, Dub Band ‘Knight of the Dub Table’ are starting their summer tour at the Raglan Yot Club on October 12th The knights will be giving the Yot Club crowd one of the the very first sneak previews of some new unreleased tracks. The Knights will be playing a selection of unreleased songs for the Yot Club, which are scheduled to feature on their next album. The band who were nominated for a Maori Music Award for their last album say they are working hard to get the second album complete and hope to release the album early next year. The show at the Raglan Yot Club is the 2nd show of an extensive national summer tour which will stretch over 3 months and will hit over 15 towns across New Zealand. In Brief: Council assures Whaanga coasters it has enough to go on Waikato District Council has scotched rumours it doesn’t have enough community support to go ahead with the Whaanga Coast sewerage link-up. “We’ve recently secured the support required from residents which enables us to progress the scheme,” acting general manager Stephen Cox told the Chronicle. “Our next step is to complete the tender process which involves the awarding of contracts.” The council is promising a detailed update by the end of this week. It’s believed the rumours surfaced because the council had to get property owners who elected to link up with Raglan town’s sewerage system to sign fresh, legally correct documents

The Royal Spoonbillls head north The Royal Spoonbills that have visited Raglan Harbour since early autumn will be flying back to their breeding grounds in September and October. They will return here next March after breeding. During the summer as many as 50 spoonbills were counted on the harbour. They visit northern harbours during winter for the abundance of food on the mudflats. For those of you who have been watching the birds as they feed on the tide line you may have noticed the elegant plumes the males have grown prior to mating. Many birds will be heading for Okarito in South Westland where they first bred in 1949. They now breed at the Vernon Lagoons Blenheim, Marlborough, Green Island Otago, Invercargill Estuary and in the North Island at Parengarenga, Rangaunu and Whangarei Heads and Kapiti Island. It is expected that in time they will breed on Raglan Harbour. As the spoonbills depart to the south, migratory birds from the Northern

Hemisphere such as bar-tailed godwits, knots, sandpipers and turnstones will arrive for the New Zealand summer. Some of these birds will be seen on the Raglan Harbour. Pam Bovill
