Locals dig deep in support of volunteer services

Auctioneer Chris Leuthart calling the bids during the Raglan Volunteer Services fundraiser hosted by the Raglan Club on Saturday night.

A

n estimated 400 people packed out the Raglan club to help raise over $25,000 for five of Raglan’s volunteer services over the weekend. A night filled with auctions, food and entertainment ensured the fundraiser was a success. Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade station officer Leanna Darby said the result was “awesome” and certainly showed the community’s “support for us and what we do.” “I think it was really amazing…we are a pretty small community to raise [$25,000] in one night.” She said that the 300 meals, donated by Colin Chung who was helped by the many “quiet workers in the back,” made close to $3,000 on its own. The final amount was expected to increase as funds were still being received by auction bidders. All items were donated by local individuals or businesses and auctioned off by local Chris Leuthart. “The generosity of Raglan businesses

,

Well supported: Over 400 people attended the event was substantial,” Mr Leuthart said. Mr Leuthart, who was involved in the inaugural fundraiser in 2012, said that the weekend’s fundraiser was “well organised.” “We learned a lot from the first auction. This year was spot on.” He said improvements made to sound

and lighting “just kept the momentum going” and allowed everyone in the crowd to have a “really good time.” The auction started at 8pm and was over by 9:30pm when the legendary Raglan Mudsharks hit the stage. Marcia Ahern

N

adine Meddings had a vision for her design store Atamira and it has led to a shop revamp after seven years in business.

“I could see and feel the space and it felt airy and really fresh and that was kind of what made me feel like it was a good move,” Nadine said, explaining her vision. Atamira reopened last week as a concept-style design store with separate areas for men’s clothing, books, and design and homewares. Trying to swim against the tide of consumerism, Atamira aimed to showcase a range of small businesses or designers who were passionate about what they did and were environmentally and socially responsible in their business practices.

The shop was returning to its original concept of stocking a broad collection of interesting and quality products, with more emphasis on handmade, local design and New Zealand-made and a little less emphasis on fashion. “Atamira means platform or stage and that was always the idea - to use the space as a platform concept space for creative and complimentary ideas of my own and of others,” Nadine said. The men’s area, which would be known as The Corner Store. Raglan, would stock handpicked quality brands that reflected the Raglan lifestyle and endeavoured “to create something unique in menswear for not only Raglan, but New Zealand”. Nadine would still sell women and children’s clothing as well, with the idea of having ‘something for everyone’ important to her business philosophy and her survival as a small business in Raglan. “Ultimately I would love to have all New Zealand-made and designed but this is getting more and more expensive and hard to find. It is great to see that slowly people seem to be taking on board the idea to buy less but better quality,” Nadine planned to put more energy into her own organic women’s and children’s clothing brand, Ruby and Rata, which had been put on the back burner “for too long”. Atamira was also providing a platform for the creative ideas of her two children, who were now selling their handmade bracelets in the store. Long term, Nadine wanted to create “a fresh and eclectic hub” that could include a café – utilising the deck out front – and a house plant section. Rachel Benn

Ruapuke farewells camp manager

H

e’s described as a ‘good bloke’ who had a love for people, fishing and Ruapuke. Earlier this month more than a hundred people came together at the Ruapuke Cemetary to farewell a Ruapuke Ben Walker “institution.” Ben Walker was camp manager at the Ruapuke Motor Camp until three months ago. He had battled cancer for three years before he passed away, aged 69, at Hospice Waikato in Hamilton. Ben’s colleague Ashley Hooper said the place was “very different” without his work-mate and friend. “It’s quiet…he was a good laugh.” He said that Ben was the face of Ruapuke Motor Camp for nearly 30 years and dedicated many hours to maintaining the motor camp and making the place a great experience for visitors. “He was still mowing the lawns until three months ago.” Ben’s wife of nearly 50 years, Beverly, said that her husband “just loved Ruapuke”. “He loved living there by the beach. He just loved meeting all the tourists.” She said that on her weekly visits to Ruapuke, she would overhear her husband chatting with visitors, from all over the world, about the motor camp and its surroundings. Ben was a keen fisherman. Every chance he got he would go to his favourite spot, Papanui Point, and drop his line in. Ben won the inaugural Ruapuke Rocks fishing contest, earlier this year, where his name was the first to be etched in the wooden platform of the main trophy of the event - which is on display in the Ruapuke Motor Camp kitchen. Ben’s brother Eric Williams, who lives at Ruapuke Motor Camp said that he would miss his brother who was “generally a good bloke” who “would always be in for an argument.” “You could call Ben an ‘institution’…He’d go out of his way to help you.” Eric said his brother was a “natural” golfer who would frequently make it “rain golf balls” at the camp ground. Ashley remembers, “he’d be hitting golf balls around and you’d hear them bouncing off the caravans.” Ben’s final journey around Ruapuke took him out to Papanui Point, along the coast road then on to Ruapuke Cemetary where he now lays in rest. Neighbourhood café banks on fair weather

T

he hatch was lifted last week on the latest café to sprout up outside Raglan town centre.

Fair Weather Café – an offshoot of the OceanView B & B in Norrie Avenue – comes less than a year after Amanda and Adam Cron began offering budget “flashpacker” accommodation in a tastefully renovated wing of the former Raglan Oceanview Haven Resthome. Now they’re serving anything from coffee and cake to high teas to passers-by but only when the sun shines, explains Amanda of the café’s unusual name. “If the weather is clear we are here, if it hoses down we close down.” There’s good reason for that as the café seating is all in a courtyard which, while mostly sheltered from wind, is open to the elements save for some large red sun umbrellas shading the picnic tables. With the help of Spanish ‘woofer’ Alfonso the Crons have been busy creating their outdoor café, and outfitting the food prep area with refrigerated display cabinets and a commercial dishwasher to comply with council standards. The kitchen and servery operate from behind a bright orange-painted hatch that opens

and closes by way of a pulley. It’s an old door from Xtreme Zero Waste’s wood recycling centre, Amanda told the Chronicle, while the servery counter came from macrocarpa offcuts from a neighbour’s kitchen. Amanda hopes the venture will carry the family through wintertime when the bed and breakfast business slows. She was a qualified chef in another life, on superyachts in the Mediterranean for 10 years, and recently got her health and hygiene qualifications from Wintec. She’s keen to capitalise on the community feel of the neighbourhood, offering “ten dollar teacher deals” – the café sits directly opposite Raglan Area School – and “OAP afternoons” with tea, cucumber sandwiches and warm scones for the oldies. Other cafes operating outside the town centre are Wainui Road’s popular new Rockit Kitchen and Surf Shop near the Ocean Beach turnoff and the Raglan Roast Food Department, formerly the Raglan West dairy. Meanwhile Solscape’s vegetarian café The Conscious Kitchen is set to reopen for the summer in late November or early December and to trade on through until May. Edith Symes

were well received by those who gathered to celebrate a new and exciting line of work from these two established local artists. The rustic rural cafe was a perfect venue to showcase their range and host the crowd of local art lovers.

and there is guaranteed to be at least one new director elected," said Mr Wallis. “Attending the Roadshow will provide farmers with a greater understanding of each candidate’s governance ability and experience. “This is vital in helping us come to a decision as to which candidates are best suited to drive Fonterra’s success now and in the future." Mr Wallis said participating in the Roadshow was the responsibility of all shareholders and an important part of demonstrating their right of ownership and control. Director candidates are: Gray Baldwin, Leonie Guiney, David MacLeod, John Monaghan, Garry Reymer, Grant Rowan. Event: Monday 3 November, 7.00pm. Mystery Creek Events Centre, 125 Mystery Creek Road, Hamilton.

Jumble and art sale for friend-in-need A group of friends have teamed up to organise a fundraising 'Giant Jumble' and 'Art Sale' on Saturday November 1st in support of a local friend’s cancer treatment. They’re planning for it to include a wide range of donated items including: good quality clothes, toys, books, furniture, jewellery, art, plants, garden implements, seedlings, baking, jams and preserves, home produce – in fact anything that you’d like to donate as long as it’s in good condition! “We’re hoping there’ll also be an ‘art table’, as our friend is actively involved in the arts here, as well as a food stall and even a garden stall if people can donate some seedlings – as it’s the ideal time of year", said Jacqueline Anderson, one of the organisers. All donations can be dropped off at The Old School Arts Centre on Friday October 31st between 10am and 6pm, which provides time to sort it out prior to the sale the next day.

Anything can be donated, as long as it’s clean and in good condition as there will be no time to wash anything. "The Giant Jumble and Art Sale itself will be a bargain-hunters dream – so definitely pencil it in, and we’ll look forward to seeing you there!” says Jacqueline. The organisers insist that it’s not just about being able to raise money for their friend’s treatment, it’s more about feeling they can do something to help and to show their support – “This is our way of being able to help her, with all proceeds raised going directly to our friendin-need.” So if you fancy a spring-clean or want to free up some space at home, please consider donating unwanted items to the Jumble Sale organisers at The Old School Arts Centre on October 31st between 10am and 6pm. Event: Giant Jumble and Art Sale, Saturday 1st November, Old School Arts Centre. Jenny Penfold
