Local Coastguard voted TOPCUT BUTCHERY tops in region TRADING HOURS: Mon - Friday 7am - 5pm Saturday 7am - 2pm.

The  Raglan  Coastguard  may  be  called  out  to  fewer  rescues  these  days  but  that  hasn’t  stopped  â€“  and  in  fact  probably  helped  â€“  it  being  named  last  week  the  northern  region  Unit  of  the  Year. Local  Coastguard  president  Wally  Hawken,  who  was  clearly  delighted  at  the  accolade  when  the  Chronicle  called  him  at  the  weekend,  reckoned  the  award  had  come  about   because  members   â€œgot  off  their  butts  and  stepped  up  to  the  markâ€?. And  a  central  part  of  that  effort  are  the  two  or  three  bar  safety  days  which  the  Raglan  voluntary  organisation  runs  between  November  and  April.   It’s  the  only  northern  region  Coastguard  unit  other  than  Manukau  to  run  bar  days  and  Wally  said  the  boating  education  message  â€œwas  really  getting  out  thereâ€?  locally  and  in  that  sense  making  the  Raglan  Coastguard  a  victim  of  its  own  success. The  small  Raglan  unit  had  really  got  itself  sorted  in  recent  times,  Wally  said.  That  meant  being  HIÂżFLHQW HIIHFWLYH KDYLQJ LWV ÂżQDQFHV LQ RUGHU DQG all  vessel  assets  â€œup  to  speedâ€?. The  vessel  assets  are  its  two  new  jetskis  and  the  Gallagher  Rescue  boat,  now  up  on  the  slip  getting  its  annual  overhaul  to  the  tune  of  $17,000  while  a  replacement  boat  has  been  brought  in  from  Marsden  Point  up  north  and  is  on  call  24/7.   But  Raglan  Coastguard  could  not  have  achieved  the  award  without  the  huge  community  support  it  had  attracted  over  the  last  couple  of  years,  Wally  insisted.  Sponsorship  and  support  from  local  organisations Â

such  as  the  Chamber  of  Commerce,  Raglan  Real  Estate,  Westpac,  Kopua  Holiday  Park,  Raglan  Club  and  the  bowling  club  showed  the  town  had  a  ORW RI FRQÂżGHQFH LQ WKH XQLW KH VDLG Wally  was  also  grateful  to  Coastguard  Raglan’s  two  main  sponsors  â€“  Gallagher  Group,  after  which  the  rescue  boat  is  named,  and  Ecolab  in  Te  Rapa.  Wel  Energy,  the  Lion  Foundation  and  Trust  Waikato  are  other  important  sponsors.  He  said  while  the  number  of  rescues  was  falling  the  Raglan  Coastguard’s  35  volunteers,  including  WZR ZRPHQ DQG ÂżYH VNLSSHUV ZHUH SXWWLQJ LQ DQ “amazingâ€?  number  of  hours  to  keep  everything  about  the  local  unit  ship-shape  and  ready  to  go. Another  pointer  to  the  unit’s  health  was  a  successful  recruitment  evening  run  last  week,  with  several  young  adults  keen  to  get  involved.  Meanwhile  the  existing  band  of  volunteers,  Wally  added,  were  looking  forward  to  moving  into  their  new  premises  at  the  wharf.     Continued  on  page  4..................................            Â

Inventive muso plays with home- made instruments Self-described  resonance  man  Marten  ten  Broek  doesn’t  just  make  great  music  â€“  he  also  makes  his  own  instruments  that,  while  they  might  produce  familiar  sounds,  can  have  a  rustic  â€œdown  homeâ€?  look  all  their  own. The  37-year-old  Raglan  musician’s  been  enjoying  lately  the  â€œdeep,  sonorous  soundsâ€?  of  the  cello,  so  it  was  inevitable  he’d  start  stockpiling  the  right  bits  of  wood  and  ponder  how  much  he  needed  to  stick  WR WUDGLWLRQDO FRQÂżJXUDWLRQV DV KH VHW DERXW making  his  own.  He’s  liking  the  violin  at  the  moment,  too  â€“  particularly  the  chance  to  hear  what  he  calls  â€œoffsâ€?,  when  the  sound  is  not  quite  on  the  note  â€“  and  that  has  spurred  the  creation  of  another  of  his  rough-hewn  stringed  instruments. He’s  also  particularly  interested  in  sympathetic  strings,  having  been  busy  of  late  looking  at  a  lot  of  Indian  music  like  that  of  the  age-old  sitar. Sympathetic  or  auxiliary  strings  found  on  many  Indian  musical  instruments  are  not  played  directly,  Marten  explains  â€“  they  just  happen  to  â€œhumâ€?  at  the  same  resonance  as  the  strings  above  them. The  sometime  barista  at  Bobo’s  â€“  Raglan’s  popular  hole-in-the-wall  cafe  downtown  in  Volcom  Lane  â€“  has  another  project  on  the  go  too.  He’s  making  another  lapslide  guitar.  Like  most  of  his  self-built  musical  instruments  it’s  crafted  from  the  mahogany  of  old  furniture  picked  up  at  secondhand  shops  like  Xtreme  Waste’s,  and  for  this  â€œexperimentalâ€?  one  he’s  changed  the  FRQÂżJXUDWLRQ WR PD[LPLVH WKH YROXPH “I  get  bored  if  I  have  to  do  the  same  thing  all  the  time,â€?  Marten  told  the  Chronicle  last  week  before  his  â€˜Broken  Neck  Howling  Propellers’  gig  at  the  Yot  Club.  â€œAnd  if  I  get  bored  I  get  a  little  bit  morose.â€? There’s  not  much  chance  of  that,  judging  by  Marten’s  juggling  of  his  innovative  instrument-making  with  songwriting,  singing  and  performing,  making  good  coffees  and  occasionally  working  for  ORFDOO\ RZQHG 1H[W /HYHO 5RRÂżQJ “Better  to  vary  your  diet,â€?  is  Marten’s  philosophy. He  reckons  he’s  one  of  those  people  who  run  around  with  a  song  in  their  head  most  of  the  time  and,  with  a  debut  album  behind  him,  last  week’s  performance  at  the  Yottie  gave  him  a  chance  to  air  a  â€œpile  of  new  stuffâ€?.

None  of  it  rehearsed  to  death,  he  hastens  to  add.  Spontaneous  is  more  his  style.  â€œIt’s  nice  to  come  up  with  a  set  list  on  the  day  and  have  a  go  ...  it  keeps  it  (the  music)  fresh.â€? Marten’s  played  music  â€“   mainly  guitar  â€“  for  26  years  now  but  it  was  only  a  few  years  ago  that  his  FXULRVLW\ DQG ³¿QDQFLDOO\ challengedâ€?  situation  compelled  him  to  make  his  own  instruments  from  recycled  materials.  It  couldn’t  be  rocket  science,  he  told  himself  â€“  and  besides  his  father,  now  in  France,  was  an  â€œamazing  woodworkerâ€?. So  Marten  â€“  a  left- hander  who  improvised  by  playing  a  right-handed  classical  guitar  upside- GRZQ RU Ă€LFNHG WKH strings  so  he  could  play  either  way  â€“  foraged  around  and  came  up  with  his  own  purpose-built  left-handed  guitar.  Then  it  was  a  hollow- neck  lapslide  guitar,  like  Ben  Harper’s  but  built  to  KLV RZQ VSHFLÂżFDWLRQV followed  by  the  construction  of  a  three- DIY guitar: Marten ten Broek with the hollow-neck string  slide  guitar.  lapslide guitar he describes as like Ben Harper’s but After  that  came  built to his own specifications. Marten’s  eight-string  ukulele,  or  what  he  likes  than  modern  methods  of  luthiary  â€“  the  art  of  to  call  his  Te  uku  lele  for  the  simple  reason  making  or  repairing  stringed  instruments  â€“  it  was  made  in  Te  Uku.   It’s  made  of  the  and  depends  on  creating  his  own  woodpile,  trademark  recycled  mahogany  but  the  top  it  also  ensures  no  trees  are  harmed  and  the  is  actually  a  piece  of  100-year-old  kauri  carbon  footprint  extends  no  further  than  the  wall  which  came  from  the  local  pub  after  local  recycle  centre.  remodelling,  he  says. Marten  also  repairs  and  restores  Based  on  the  Tahitian  ukulele,  it’s  instruments,  making  them  playable  again.  typical  of  Marten’s  down-home  style  in  It’s  important,  he  says,  to  give  each  that  it  was  made  using  only  â€œstuff  at  handâ€?.   instrument  â€œa  chance  to  keep  singingâ€?. The  result  is  simple  and  functional  yet  â€œI  look  at  the  world  and  think  it’s  pretty  aesthetically  pleasing.  â€œUtilitarianâ€?  is  his  special  and  my  task  in  life  is  to  make  it  more  word.  beautiful  if  I  can,â€?  he  adds.  Transforming  Marten  reckons  he’s  taken  â€œa  great  leap  say  an  old  colonial  wardrobe,  a  dusty  backwardsâ€?  when  it  comes  to  instrument- desk  or  an  unwanted  chest  of  drawers  into  making.  â€œRather  than  cutting  the  plank  to  build  the  ship,  I’ll  hollow  out  a  log  with  an  beautiful  acoustic  instruments  is  part  of  that  process.  adze.â€? The  senior  teacher  was  also  convicted Â

of  unlawfully  interfering  with  a  sign  on  the  reserve  and  ordered  to  pay  $500  in  costs  to  DOC.   The  junior  teacher  who  was  acting  on  instructions  from  his  colleague  was  discharged  without  conviction,  but  ordered  to  pay  $500  in  costs  to  DOC  and  also  offered  to  make  a  $500  donation  to  the  Waikato  Botanical  Society. DOC  Waikato’s  Community  Support  Manager,  Rachel  Kelleher,  said  â€œDOC  is  very  pleased  with  the  judge’s  decision  and  the  penalties  handed  down.â€?  â€œThe  case  highlights  the  importance  RI SURWHFWLQJ 1=ÂśV LQGLJHQRXV Ă€RUD DQG
