Raglan kiteboarders’ skills do the trick at nationals Olly Brunton used to be an Olympic snowboarder – now he’s a national champion on a board of a different kind. The 39-year-old Raglan acupuncturist was “super-stoked” to come away from last weekend’s Kiteboard Freestyle Nationals at Tauranga with a first in the masters section of the five-day event which is, he says, exactly what he wanted to achieve. His was one of three successes for local kiters, with Matt Taggart taking out the course racing category – a new side of the sport, much like yacht racing but on a board – and design student Joel Savage placing second in the juniors. Olly reckons it was “nail-biting” stuff on Sunday night watching the All Blacks hold out the French to win the Rugby World Cup final but at the same time waiting for the judges to release final results at the kiteboard nationals. He also ended up fifth-equal overall in the more competitive open men’s division, which included a New Zealander who’s ranked No 4 in the world.

Olly Brunton flying over Raglan. Image courtesy of Armie Armstrong Raglan’s other new kiteboard champion, Matt Taggart, one of the founders of global brand Ozone which designs and manufactures kites, came to kiteboarding years ago from a background of snowkiting. “I really love the racing side (of kiting)”, he says. The nationals was an “excellent” event, he adds – well run and with a big turnout. At 18, Joel was Raglan’s youngest competitor and definitely “a bit surprised” at his second placing in the junior section because he hadn’t trained hard-out, having only just returned home from Massey University in Wellington. Kiteboarding’s become something of a passion since his father Keith first taught him the ropes about four years ago. And he’ll kite every day there’s wind when at home on holiday. Joel moves into the open men’s category next year, and while expecting the competition to be more difficult he’s still “aiming high”. It’s the technical tricks that score the points in competitive kiting, he explains. The aim is to land “as many tricks as you can” during the seven-minute heats. Edith Symes

Chartered Accountants 7147948AA

Olly has an extensive competitive career, first in rugby then in professional snowboarding where he won three national titles in the ‘90s and competed at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan. But it’s kiteboarding which has had him hooked for the last four years.

Coffee on the walls at Blacksand When multi-medium artist Simon Te Wheoro got a supply of fair-trade coffee beans from Raglan’s Trade Aid shop he decided to use them as the basis for the colours in many of his art pieces currently on show at Blacksand Café. A close-up of a design feature in a piece called Te Ara Hikoi - pathways

“My mum used to manage Trade Aid and they sponsored me the beans so I began to experiment with different ways to use them on canvas and other surfaces. Its tricky stuff on canvas.” says Simon. The exhibition is themed around Mauri, eternal energy. Some pieces are personal, about his whanau and whakapapa (geneology). Others reference to whenua – the land. It is not surprising Simon has developed into a full-time artist. Creating art is in his blood. Dad Andre is a talented designer. “I grew up watching the old man design beautiful fashion. He could sketch up and sew pieces in no time. Now I live the life of a full time artist. I have a family and responsibilities and the money side can be my biggest stress but this is my chosen life. I’m lucky because I have a range of art forms I work in to balance things out.” As a boy Simon went through Raglan Area School’s bilingual unit. He remembers learning was rich in narrative and projects had a strong artistic bent. In his last year at high school he attended Te Whare Kura o Rakaumangamanga in Huntly – a college devoted to Maori arts and culture. From there a year in Christchurch helping at his uncle’s paint and panel shop brought Simon into contact with metals,

panelling and painting - skills he now pours into some of his art. Last year’s exhibition at Blacksand included bold copper pieces shone to a brilliant glow using a grinder. “I was lucky enough to get a couple of hot water cylinders from my Nana. That’s where the copper came from.” After Christchurch Simon completed a four year Bachelor of Arts and Advanced Diploma at Toihoukura – a highly regarded Maori contemporary art college in Gisborne. “We experienced a whole range of really rich artistic processes. We also got involved on Marae DIY-type projects.” Each piece in his current exhibition has been designed with the wall-space in mind. “To me an exhibition space needs to work to tell a whole story. I’m guided by this as I decide what to create.” Another project has kept Simon busy lately. Along with sculptor Pakewa Watene he is designing Pou Whenua (sculptured poles) using steel to stand permanently on each side of the new walk-bridge. “My Pou Whenua will be over on the Kopua side of the bridge. I was really proud to be asked by Waikato District Council through Ngati Mahanga to take this project on. It’s been challenging work involving lots of structural thinking and detail. We’ve blended form and colour into our designs.” Simon’s exhibition will be at Blacksand for a month. He has left his business card at the café and is happy to talk more about any of his work for sale. Sue Russell

Wind turbine generates excitement at Raglan Area School WEL Networks’ residential wind generation trial welcomed the first installation of a new wind turbine at Raglan Area School in March of this year.

The 1.9-kilowatt Skystream is being utilised as an educational tool in the classroom, giving the students the opportunity to learn through hands-on and interactive curricula and whipping up enthusiasm for next-generation scientists and engineers. Dr Julian Elder, WEL Networks CEO, believes that these types of trials are an important step for wind energy in New Zealand. Besides its role in classroom education, the trial is a way to make surrounding communities aware of wind energy’s potential. “Through this trial, we are learning to understand more clearly the costs and issues involved in residential wind generation, the amount

of electricity that can be generated and how we can integrate this technology into our distribution network,” says Dr Elder. According to Malcolm Cox, Principal of Raglan Area School, it has been a wonderful opportunity for them. “The school had decided it wanted to utilise renewable energies and we already had solar - so, the turbine complimented our enviro-friendly policies,” Mr Cox said. “We are so pleased to be a part of it.” Funded by WEL Energy Trust, the trial looks at the practicalities of small-scale wind technologies in New Zealand as a form of distributed generation, or generation of energy close to the point of use. “We’re not planning to power the whole school. The purpose behind this is educational,” Mr Cox said. “The turbine regularly brings up discussions among students about not only creating renewable energy but also how to reduce our consumption of that energy.” Electricity produced by the turbine travels directly to the school’s electricity panel. Mr Cox said electric power will benefit the school on a small but important scale – the turbine is producing 6.5kWh per day on average. This is the equivalent energy to provide lighting to one school classroom everyday for a year - but that’s not the primary reason the school wanted to participate in the project. “The primary reason our school has partnered with WEL on this project is to learn about wind generation,” Mr Cox said. “We are able to introduce the concept of renewable energy to the littlies and follow that learning up to the older ones. They can monitor the electricity meter within the classroom and track the data as it comes in. As the technology becomes more refined, we will be able to collect richer data and the kids will learn more and more.”

Dr Oliver Russell Dr Gill Brady Dr Marcia Mitchley 10 Bankart Street, Raglan

“Educating today’s young people about the benefits and mechanics of renewable energy prepares them for a wealth of future opportunities,” Mr Cox said. He said the project also demonstrates the crucial role rural communities can play.

Surfers sneak through police line to mount deep-sea oil protest Raglan surfers have defied police heavying to paddle out in public waters at Port Taranaki and protest near a ship due to start exploring for deepsea oil directly off our coast – a move they believe could easily lead on to an environmental catastrophe for Raglan’s “precious coastline”.

followed us to our accommodation and stayed on our tail for the whole time we were there, parking outside through the night and so on.”

The quartet from Board Riders Against Drilling – Phil McCabe, pro surfer Miles Ratima, Jay Beaudry and former Raglan resident Dom Zapata – joined Greenpeace activists in what they insist was a legal protest over the arrival at New Plymouth of the Polarcus Alima, which will explore at depths of up to 1600 metres on behalf of controversial US oil giant Anadarko.

“When we did sneak through their lines to paddle out we were met by a special unit that had been brought in from Wellington – a highlevel call to ensure we didn’t get the message out.”

Anadarko were part-owners of the 1500metre deep well which leaked a massive 780 million litres of oil into the Gulf of Mexico over three months last year. “The Gulf of Mexico is a lake compared to the wild west coast of New Zealand and I do not want to see our precious coastline tarnished,” Phil told the Chronicle this week. He confirmed there was a heavy police presence for their protest visit on Monday of last week, and that they were tailed from Auckland to Taranaki. “Going into New Plymouth at 3am we were road-blocked by four cop cars and eight cops specifically there to stop us,” he said. “They

Phil said the police would not let them onto the port boat ramp to launch their boats, even though “we were never intending at any point to break the law, just to set up a peaceful protest in public waters”.

Even so, the protestors did manage to paddle across the port to a point a couple of hundred metres from the Polarcus and to hoist some placards proclaiming “Stop Deep Sea Oil” before returning to shore. Phil, who with his environmentalist partner Bernadette Gavin runs Solscape ecoretreat at Manu Bay, said there was a strong Raglan involvement because the ship would be surveying straight off the local coast. “The point is that globally the easy-to-get oil is gone. The low-hanging fruit has been picked. The deep-sea oil that the Government is enticing these companies to come and get resembles the hard-to-get fruit at the top of the tree that requires you to hang off the top of the ladder. Its extraction is very risky.” He said the Rena disaster across on the East Coast – where Greenpeace are heavily

Greenpeace activists from left: Phil McCabe, Billie Woods, Miles Ratima and Dominic Zapa protest in front of the Polarcus Alima in Port Taranaki involved in the cleanup – highlighted that a single human error could cause catastrophe. It also demonstrated that, despite claims from politicians that safety measures were in place for deep-sea oil drilling, New Zealand was not equipped to cope with even a relatively small mess like Rena. “If we can’t control the spill from Rena, then we have no chance of containing a deepsea oil disaster,” echoed Dom Zapata, who spent a week clearing oil off Tauranga beaches and saw the devastation on Motiti Island. If the Polarcus’s survey is successful the drilling of wildcat wells off Raglan could begin as early as next year. Edith Symes

Town hall show to help visual arts students on way to Oz A group of Maori visual arts students from Poihakena Marae are about to hit Melbourne – recognised as Australia’s arts and culture capital – and are going all out for their final fundraiser this Saturday. The performing arts show at Raglan Town Hall by students from the Hamilton-based campus of Te Wananga o Aotearoa promises an afternoon’s entertainment with support from local musicians, says teacher Heeni Kerekere, kicking off with a hangi lifted from across the road at the Raglan Club. Batons up, raffles and auctions are all part of the fun aimed at getting the 13-strong group of second and third year students – called Kaiwhakaaraara – to Melbourne next month where they hope to check out art and culture from across the ditch, and work collaboratively with aboriginal students.

Raglan urged to take a stance Raglan people should stop and think about what it means to have deep-sea oil exploration activity happening on their doorstep, says local environmental activist Phil McCabe. “Once individuals and we as a community have a good understanding of what’s at stake … then we can decide what stance to take,” he says. “I would be more than happy to help facilitate a community discussion if there is interest.”

Creating hope for our future

“And we’d like to invite them back here (to Raglan) maybe next year,” says Heeni, hoping their 10-day trip is the first in a regular cultural exchange. Kaiwhakaaraara has been fundraising “hard out” since last year, she adds, cooking up fry bread and seafood chowder every month at Raglan Creative Market. The local group is also part of the Wananga, with its multi-media diploma students now working towards their end-of-year exhibition at the Old School Arts Centre in Stewart Street. It includes everything from painting and print-making to weaving, stencilling and claywork, says Heeni. *Catch the show at Raglan Town Hall on Saturday October 29 at 3pm. Kimberley remakes old clothes and fabrics into skirts, pants, nappies… Using reused materials and her sewing machine (or the community sewing machine here at WEC!), Kimberley can turn an unwanted scrap of fabric into whatever fashion creation she fancies. Remaking old clothes can offer you more genuine choice than high street production lines ever will! Kimberley’s skirt is made out of curtain samples, and Amon (to her left) is wearing cargo pants made out of an old beanbag cover! All of their clothes are pre-loved. Seed of the month CUCUMBER

These vining plants of the Cucurbit family (like Pumpkins, Melons and Squash) originated in India, eventually appearing in Europe by the 9th Century. The legend of Gilgamesh describes cucumber munching, and the Roman Emperor Tiberius had raised beds on wheels and greenhouses of sorts constructed to provide a year-round supply for his table. Cucumbers will climb onto a trellis or low frame and come in many sizes and colours. Cucmbers are over 90% water, “cool as a cucumber”. 4 varieties at our Seed Bank, the most popular being Oriental Soo Yoh (see pic)

CORIANDER

Related to Parsley, Carrots and Dill, Coriander has a tendency to bolt at the slightest pretext. Thus it volunteers for the group of edible plants which I like to sow every few weeks to ensure a regular harvest. The whole plant can be eaten, the root being most prized in some cuisines. If allowed to flower, it will attract beneficial insects and the seed (each one is actually two hemispherical seeds joined together) can easily be collected to cook with, or to plant again. A valuable member of a well balanced garden. Available at the seed bank.

Last Wednesday saw MP for the Taranaki King Country electorate, Shane Ardern leading a convoy of utes decked out with National party regalia through the main street of Raglan. “We’re having a lot of fun, it’s been a real party atmosphere,” says Mr. Ardern of his trip so far. One of the biggest electorates in the country, Mr. Ardern’s convoy around the Taranaki King Country visited every town in the area. “The electorate is just so big that travelling around on your own is a bit pointless, but with our convoy presence in town you can’t say you haven’t seen us,” says Mr. Ardern. Although Mr. Ardern’s recent majority over Labour candidate Renee van de Weert was one of the biggest in the country at over 15 000 votes, he insists that he is taking this election very seriously.

Hyundai Surf Tour set to start in Raglan Raglan will be the first stop on the 2012 Hyundai Tour. Kicking some life into summer from early January the tour includes five events taking place at iconic surf spots around New Zealand - with Raglan included in the mix for the first time in the tours’ sixyear history. The 2012 Hyundai Tour will also travel to Piha, Sandy Bay and Mount Maunganui before the season concludes at Port Waikato in early March. Raglan will be the location on everyone’s minds, as it is not only the first event of the season, but is also the only point break on tour. Raglan local surfing legend and seasoned Hyundai Tour campaigner Michael Thomson was in high spirits when told the tour was visiting his home break.

“Manu Bay is a great venue. It has been eight years since a major longboard event was held here but everyone always wants to come to Raglan” Thomson said.

We have a wonderful sporting facility down at the Club Rooms in Cross Street, Raglan. It is great to see both the fields and the courts being utilized by the Raglan community. The Raglan Rugby Sports Club has been a part of the Raglan community for many years, we have a history of being a very welcoming Club to all of our travelers from over the hill.
