Dear Editor
Burgershack. Takeaway. 35a Bow Street.................................................................... 825 8439
Tara Wellbyโs powerful plea (8th Sept Chronicle) for a simple, metal footpath along Wainui Road to ensure the safety of school children, tourists and residents of โouterโ Raglan communities (e.g. Whale Bay, Earlโs Place, Upper Wainui) was a wake-up call for me. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the successful completion of the โCity-to-Surf Walkwayโ campaign to link Raglan town to the then newly created Wainui Reserve. Scores of people signed petitions and โboughtโ metres of footpath along Wainui Road. (The donorsโ imprinted inscriptions are still visible today). At that time we considered our work to ensure pedestrian safety along Wainui Road was done. Tara Wellbyโs letter reminded me that nothing stands still. Since then, there has been an explosion of new homes, as well as businesses and tourist lodgings built along Wainui Road extending to Whale Bay. There is often heavy traffic on this narrow and winding road. A simple, low-cost metal footpath extending from Whale Bay to Wainui Reserve is long over-due. Let us hope it does not take the loss of the life of a school child, a local jogger or a visiting sightseer to prompt Council to address this obvious and urgent need. If you, like me, are concerned by the lack of any provision for pedestrians between Wainui Reserve and Whale Bay, I urge you to take up Tara Wellbyโs invitation to email her (tara@assistant. co.nz). I placed an ad in the paper and posted leaflets in as many houses as possible last week regarding my missing dog, Ruben. Beached รข€˜whaleรข€™ helps train locals to handle strandings They now know to call the Doc hotline and to keep the whale cool and in an upright position รข€“ that is, with its blowhole and dorsal fin pointing skyward. รข€œAnd donรข€™t stand by the tail,รข€? quipped one volunteer in the day-long training session, or you could be in for a good slap. The weekendรข€™s workshop was a first for Doc, instigated by a couple of whale strandings at Port Waikato in February, says Waikato programme manager Jack de Thierry. รข€œWeรข€™re the government agency for strandings,รข€? he explains. Along with representatives from Project Jonah รข€“ a grassroots charity which facilitated the training day based at Raglan Area School -- Doc called on the key people in coastal communities from Port Waikato to Kawhia to learn how best to deal with the beached mammals. รข€œPeople are emotionally attached to these marine mammals,รข€? says Jack, who believes that by training leaders, the techniques of rescue can be passed on to others at critical times.
รข€œThe training is about education, raising public awareness and building closer working relationships with our communities,รข€? he adds. Volunteers from both Raglan and Port Waikato Surf Life Saving Clubs took part in the day, as did local police and iwi. The life saving clubs have resources such as IRBs, tubes and tractors to call on, as well as the fitness and ability of their members. Many of the wider community wonรข€™t understand that iwi play a significant role in strandings, points out Jack. Respect for iwi and their local tikanga or values is paramount, he adds. Iwi have a say on when or where whales are buried and, through legislation, have first rights with all native species รข€“ not just whales รข€“ if anything is retrieved for รข€œcustomary purposesรข€? such as a taonga or treasure. Jack was pleased with the dayรข€™s training session and admits a lot was packed in. Itรข€™s likely to be followed by similar sessions, he adds, with Kawhiaรข€™s community
constable already keen for a repeat episode. Doc subsidises the programme for Project Jonah which specialises in training volunteers to assist in whale strandings, and is often the first agency called upon in a stranding event. Edith Symes

New lease on life for weight loss challenger About five months ago, 45-year-old insulation assessor Ian Ellis was told that he was a diabetic and that his blood pressure and cholesterol levels were dangerously high. Having dealt with ongoing health issues for the last two years, deciding to take part in the Raglan Gymโs Winter Weight-loss Challenge was a decision that changed Ianโs life.
A measure of the amount of force exerted on your artery walls, blood pressure tends to vary from person to person. While an average reading is quoted to be around the 120/80 mark, Ianโs reading was a chart-topping 166/120. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often referred to as the โsilent killerโ, and signs and symptoms only become noticeable after the condition has been present for a while. High blood pressure, coupled with Ianโs cholesterol level of 6.4 (average is around 5), Ian was a high-risk candidate for serious health issues like heart disease. โWhen I spoke to the doctor about doing the weight-loss challenge he advised me not to do it and said it would be too hard on my body,โ recalls Ian. Specialising in: Despite these warnings, Ian decided to go Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian Massage) ahead with the challenge. โThe first meeting Lomi โili (Hawaiian Hot Stones) I sat there completely dumbstruck, the last Acute/Chronic Pain Conditions winner lost 20kgs and I thought to myself - Iโll Available 7 days a week & evenings
never be able to do that,โ says Ian. The Weight-loss Challenge is run over ten weeks and includes a personalised nutrition and training plan, group training sessions with the rest of the challengers as well as guidance and support from the gym instructors. With prizes for the winners sponsored by Orca and Essence, the ultimate goal of the challenge is to lose at least ten percent of your total body weight by the end of the programme. โ When you start getting to about week six youโre tired and youโre aching and youโre just over it. I almost gave up at one point but then Laurie (one of the instructors) told me to get on the stepper, and about an hour later I got back into it,โ says Ian Ian credits the support system offered by the members and instructors of Raglan Gym for getting him through some of the tougher times. โThe challenge is a social thing as well, weโre all there for a common purpose so we support each other through the highs and lows.โ Coming third in the challenge, Ian wasnโt the only success story with both first and second place winners, David Rawley and Robbyn Ho Shayney Wallis โpicking him at the postโ. Diploma of Therapeutic Massage (Maui, Hawaii). Challenge organiser and gym owner Amber Beaumont RMT NZ NZ Registered Nurse is over the moon about the recent challenge results and is Certified Infant Massage Instructor (IAIM) looking forward to the next challenge starting on the 11th Mob. 027 836 774 Ph. 825 7882 of October. โItโs really cool seeing peopleโs confidence and happiness go up and they all seem to buzz with this new energy,โ says Amber. Now on the maintenance programme, Ianโs recent trip PRIVATE INDOOR HEATED to the doctors produced great results. With a blood pressure reading of 110/70, cholesterol of 4.1 and total weight loss PRIVATE INDOOR HEATED of 13.4kgs Ian has made a massive improvement to his PRIVATE INDOOR HEATED HOLIDAY BLOCK COURSE health. Mick has dedicated 41 years to the organization and was presented with a gold chevron lapel badge by CEO of Coastguard New Zealand (Bruce Reid) at the Coastguard Raglan Annual General meeting on 29 September. Colin Small, President of Coastguard New Zealand, says, โThese volunteers are an outstanding example of those who have a dedicated passion to the organisation and presenting them with these awards on Saturday was a way in which we were able to show our recognition of their efforts. โThe entire community benefits from the work of our volunteers and Coastguard is extremely grateful to all those who donate their time.โ The awards form part of Coastguardโs โPeople First Strategyโ, an ongoing commitment by the organisation to the recognition of the many New Zealanders who donate their time and energy to saving lives at sea. โWe look forward to presenting many more long service awards in the years to come. WHAT YOUR BUSINESS CARD SAYS ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS You and your business are always communicating something. There are the messages you send intentionally; through your advertising, promotions, in store displays, your level of customer service, the way you answer the phone etc. There are also the messages your business sends unintentionally; through your actions or inaction, the way you say something rather than the words themselves, messages that come across to your customers in more subtle yet equally powerful ways. Just one of these is your business card. What does your business card say about your business? If you give out those business cards that youโve printed yourself off your computer on thin card, you could be sending all kinds of negative messages to your customers. For example, โข That you canโt afford a proper card. Maybe youโre not serious about being in business, or maybe youโre struggling. Perhaps youโre struggling because youโre not very good at what you do.
The New Zealand Transport Authority is currently undertaking consultation to gauge support for a permanent reduction to 80 km/ hr at Te Uku. It is an opportunity Te Uku School welcomes.
โข If this is how you portray your business, what must the business be like? Maybe itโs as cheap and nasty as the card.
While electronic school zone signs, installed either side of the school some months ago, have helped raise motorists awareness of driving speed through Te Uku, what the school really wants is a permanent speed reduction through the settlement.
-Several different fonts have been used
โThe signs have helped but there is no speed limit stated on them so there is no requirement for motorists to drop their speedโ, says acting principal Bernard Butler. Though 80 km/hr is the only speed option NZTA are consulting on, Mr Butler is encouraging his school community and others concerned about safety at Te Uku to comment about lower speeds than this, on the feedback form. โWe recognise it is a state highway but if there was an option of 70 km/hr that would be our preference,โ he says. This sentiment is echoed by Te Uku School Board Trustee Chairperson Cathy Knox. โThe lower the better as far as weโre concerned.โ Mrs Knox says the school works hard to manage the part of the congestion outside the school gates it is responsible for. For instance at the end of the school day cars do not leave the car parking area until the school buses have, reducing the amount of movement in and around the car park at any one time. โHowever, we get trucks and campervans pulling in that we have no control over,โ says Mrs Knox. To further improve safety for everyone outside the school, planning is underway to build a new parking space at the front of the school. This will coincide with development of a new multipurpose block on the school site. The Board of Trustees encourages anyone interested in seeing a speed reduction at Te Uku to complete the consultation feedback form provided by NZTA. โWe recognise this is not just an issue for the children and families at Te Uku School. It would be horrible for anyone to be involved in a serious accident at our doorstepโ, says Mrs Knox. Sue Russell If you would like to contribute your support for a speed reduction please pick up a copy of the form from the Chronicle office, Wainui Road, Raglan. The deadline for consultation is Thursday 20 October. Completed forms can be returned to the Chronicle for processing on to NZTA.
Raglan realtor dies Longtime Raglan real estate identity Margaret Kerapa, believed to be in her mid-60s, died on Monday in Waikato Hospital. Until recently she was branch manager at Century 21 in Raglan.
Another type of card is one thatโs been printed by a professional printer but hasnโt been designed properly. Some examples are: -Everything is centred -Use of multiple colours -Too much information
enjoy music with your
-No white space While marginally better than the home printed card they still look unprofessional and send a message that little time and effort have gone into how you show your business to the world. And yet the opposite could well be true - you might have put a lot of effort into the design of your card. But do you know what youโre doing? If you arenโt a graphic designer then it might better to give the job to an expert and focus on what you do best - running your business. You canโt be all things to all people and your business card says so much about your business professionalism that itโs worth putting some money aside to get it done properly. It will save you money in the long run as people will keep cards they like the look of and maybe even pass them on to others. If youโre not able to get a card designed professionally then at least you can get some books on design from the library and find out what works and what doesnโt. A good place to start is with, The Design book for Non-Designers, by Robin Williams.

WHAT WORKS? No more than 3 components on each side of your card (use both sides) Whatโs a component? If you squint your eyes and look at a card so you canโt actually read the words or see the logo clearly, how many distinct patterns can you see? Many cards have multiple components because there is too large a separation space between each element: โข business name โข logo โข personโs name โข personโs title โข physical address โข postal address โข phone numbers โข email address โข
fax number
If all these elements are separate your card will look too busy. Yet most of these elements are needed on a card, right? Yes, so itโs about combining the elements so that they create no more than three components. This makes it easier on the eye and therefore easier on the mind as well. Your logo and the business name can be close together so that when you squint they look like one component. Your name and title could also be put together to form a second component. One should be underneath the other but close enough so that they appear as one component. And contact details can form the third component. Think carefully about how many of your contact details need to go on your card. Remember, less is more. Allow plenty of white space. You donโt have to fill every centimetre, white space between components (not between elements) gives a sense of calm and order. Avoid too many fonts - use the rule of three again. The more fonts you have the harder your card will be to read. Fonts have personalities all their own so it can be useful to find out what a font is actually doing for your business card. Limit colours too - unless youโre selling rainbows! Grab some of the business cards youโve collected. Pick out the ones you like most and the ones you like least. Just go with your initial reactions. Then see which ones conform to the โrulesโ identified above. And remember, very few people will tell you your business card is a second rate card - but they will still think it.

Within three months of settling in Raglan, theyโve modified their six ex-rentals โ bought through TradeMe even before they arrived in the country โ into the ultimate surf wagon, with nifty inside storage for up to three shortboards strapped securely along one side of each van and two longboards strapped from the ceiling. A trendy carry-bag is stored under one of the lift-up seats to conveniently toss the damp wettie in when itโs time to hit the road again, while the NZ Surfing Guide Book listing more than 400 breaks, is kept in the glovebox. Having surfed and campervanned their way all over the country about 18 months ago, the couple had their own ideas on that โpoint of differenceโ when creating a small company. And it didnโt include dripping wetsuits hanging from the ceiling or having to โcuddle upโ with boards, as theyโve seen so often, when it was time to go to bed. Neither did they want boards stashed under the double bed, taking up valuable storage space, or across the three seats up front. Unlike other campervans, their Toyota Hiaces โ high enough to stand up in โ also include USB charging front and rear for all gadgets and JVC stereos with MP3, WMA, AUX and USB input โfor your own tunes.โ Welsh-born Niall (pronounced Neil) has been busy enjoying the practical handyman side of things rather than the design work heโs more used to as an engineer, and Annaโs had a ball outfitting their self-contained vans with everything from cutlery and crockery to some zany bedding and colourful crates for carpeted storage spaces created by Neil. โAll you need is your self, your clothes, surfboard and food,โ Anna says, and campervanners can hit the road, straight from the airport if need be. The couple have gone โthe eco way, the Raglan
wayโ too, says Anna โ an environmental consultant in her last life โ with chemical-free cleaners and a system in place encouraging their campervanners to donate to Whaingaroa Harbour Care should they want to โoffset the carbon theyโre burning.โ The enterprising couple, now in their thirties, have gone as local as they can by also using signwriter Dan Mills, car painter Frank Turner, Raglan Ink for printing and by working in with the townโs two shuttle services to and from Auckland and Hamilton airports from which much of their customer base will come. Theyโve trialled one or two of their campervans so far โ heading off to Piha and the Coromandel for weekends so they can point their surfing clientele, knowledgeably, in the right direction. Meanwhile theyโre completing โ through Wananga night classes at the community house โ the National Certificate in tourism Maori which theyโre finding really interesting. โWeโre learning Maori culture from a Kiwi perspective.โ Now theyโve got to get the hang of marketing their ex-Maui rentals (2003) which they believe are โrobustโ and sturdy enough to do the job, having used the vans themselves from what is one of Australasiaโs biggest rental van companies. โTheyโve been well looked after and thought out, and just keep on going,โ the couple reckon. Anna and Niall arenโt expecting to get rich from their new venture, but want a โlifestyleโ from it so they can enjoy the things they love about Raglan that brought them back here after staying at Manu Bayโs Solscape eco retreat. Thatโs when the couple โfell in loveโ with Raglan. Despite continuing on with their world surfing trip, when finally back in the UK they investigated visas to return and set up their venture. And the name PiwiWiwi? That comes from how they describe themselves โ Anna being a โPommy Kiwiโ (Piwi) and Niall a โWelsh Kiwiโ(Wiwi). Edith Symes

A luxury stay that will really float your boat It may be a little decadent but itรข€™s probably not that rare about town to start your day luxuriating in a spa, glass of champagne in foamy hand, with a tranquil Whaingaroa Harbour as your backdrop. To be languishing in bubbles รข€“ and with bubbles รข€“ from the top deck of a boat moored in the harbour, though, must rate as a Raglan experience with a real difference.
Hubby and I were bathing under a blue and sunny sky aboard the Wahinemoe, enjoying the last few hours of a luxury overnight stay in the harbour that came courtesy of Charlie Young, who launched his รข€œfloatelรข€? or floating hotel just last January. No matter that we were moored a stoneรข€™s throw from Raglan wharf. With the high tides which were running last week it felt safe knowing the big catamaran was firmly secured to a seven ton block and there was no chance of an unpiloted and unplanned journey to Waingaro landing or out over the bar. And it was still picture-postcard stuff as the sun rose seemingly from up the harbour and as nearby trawlers gently tugged at their moorings on the incoming tide. The twin-hulled Wahinemoe certainly is versatilityplus: it can cater for anywhere between two and 70 guests รข€“ everything from a romantic overnight stay to a wedding party or a large corporate event. This particular trip was just for us, and it felt almost a guilty pleasure to be the only guests and having all this five-star luxury to ourselves. Weรข€™d boarded at the wharf at 5.30 the night before, the unusually low tide giving us an excellent chance to inspect the underside of the repaired wharf รข€“ to see what our rates had helped pay รข€“ if only weรข€™d known what to look for. We mosey across and up-harbour a bit before cruising alongside the pancake rocks that seem to take on characters of their own รข€“ some upright and perched precariously on their pedestals, others leaning this way and that as if they might topple into the sea. But, funniest of all, many sprouting outcrops of grasses or รข€œhairรข€? that transformed them into comical humanlike creatures. Our captain, Ian Hardy, who lives across the other side of the harbour and has been cruising these waters for years in one boat or another, reckons our pancake rocks are the same age as those way down the West Coast at Punakaiki รข€“ a mere 20 or 30 million years old, the limestone formations having risen from the old part of the seabed. Now that takes some getting your head round! Suddenly at 50-something, I donรข€™t feel so old after all. We cruise past the bays รข€“ the loosely named Limestone, Cabbage Tree and Birds Bays รข€“ past a small flock of spoonbills feeding on shore, the odd kowhai tree in flower and the karaka tree that marks a grassy spot from where the brave and foolish jump into the tide from its limestone cliffs. Ian tells us there were once 14 fortresses between Waingaro and this side of the harbour and that a whole village was wiped out in the 1820s by tribes at war. Now all that remains are the surrounding hills, many of them historic pa sites.

Monthly News - whats happening instore this month: Fly Rod and tackle combos offer great value The Wahinemoe offers full catering services
The low tide keeps us from exploring the nooks and crannies of the harbour รข€“ as the Wahinemoeรข€™s low draught usually allows รข€“ and Ian leaves us to our own devices before long, setting anchor at the boatรข€™s usual moorings and paddling his way back to land in a kayak. The Wahinemoe offers full catering services รข€“ at a price of course รข€“ but weรข€™d opted to keep it simple with a few sausages and a steak which we flame grill at the stern of the lower deck, just above one of the twin 100hp Yamaha outboards which push the big cat along at a leisurely 10 knots. Weรข€™ve also brought a bottle of red with us so leave the courtesy bottle of champers for the morning. Itรข€™s a novelty, dining afloat. As the evening cools we light the gas fire, turn on the 40-inch LED satellite TV and check out the titles of the films on DVD. Thereรข€™s also a healthy pile of lifestyle magazines to browse. The movie on Rialto is one weรข€™d always wanted to see but the luxury of the king-size bed and gentle lulling motion of the Wahinemoe win out. We turn off the generator before weรข€™ve quite worked out if the film really was about the early life of one of The Beatles, and why he didnรข€™t look at all like John Lennon. Our master cabin is really one giant room that includes a kitchenette, an ensuite with plush white towels supplied and spacious sliding windows to bring the outdoors in. There are also no fewer than four cabins with double beds under hatches that at first glance just seem a part of the carpeted floor. Curiously thereรข€™s no curtaining, or none that we could find, but that proved something of a bonus anyway. Hubby reckons he was awake a bit in the night, just checking we werenรข€™t drifting out past Manu Bay, and there was a different view each time as the 11-ton Wahinemoe swung round with the tide and the wind. After breakfast in bed it was time for that luxurious bubble bath for two รข€“ and a toast to the good things in life. Sometimes overnight guests go kayaking in the morning but we had landlubber engagements pressing. A quick call to Ian and he was soon alongside in his own wee harbour tours boat to launch us, literally, back into reality.
Fly tackle is continuing to advance at a staggering rate, and as the high end Fly Rods get better so too does it follow that the quality of our Fly Sets improves. Trees for weeds

Talk to Paul Peterson, Xtreme Waste Special Ops person, for any length of time about the invasiveness of weeds and you begin to appreciate just how wired for survival they are. Weeds he explains are not just a problem in the home garden. They present a direct threat to our native bush as well where their creeping natures sees them climbing up and over the bush canopy blocking life-giving light from the natives. รข€œOur natives get overrun and it doesnรข€™t take long for it to happenรข€?, says Paul, pointing to the edge of a stand of native bush bordering Xtreme Wasteรข€™s depot where a small native is losing the battle completely shrouded under a virulent creeper. Helping gardeners to get weeds successfully out of home gardens and managing their disposal so they donรข€™t creep back is a key reason behind the current trees for weeds project at Xtreme Waste. Supported by the Department of Conversation and Waikato Regional Council the project gives Raglan residents the chance to dispose of their trailor loads of weeds at no cost and for their trouble get information about effectively managing weeds as well as a native tree to plant. More than 70% of plants introduced to New Zealand

subsequently escape the captivity of the home garden plot and go on to invade native bush. Weeds will race along fence lines and road sides heading for the hills. รข€œWe donรข€™t want noxious weeds to enter our green waste system. They have to go into landfill so they are not reintroduced back into the community. Raglan firm Weedbusters are helping us with this.รข€? says Paul. Managing weeds through conversation is always better than any other management plan. Among the worst offenders are species such as Climbing Doc, Kikuyu Grass, Bamboo roots, Wild Ginger, Convulvulus, Oxalis and Wandering Willy. Xtreme Waste has decided to extend the weed swap project and will continue to give native trees away until stocks runs out. Sue Russell

Fighting grandmother shows age no barrier
Raglan grandmother Shahn Ellis not only drew in all three rounds of the townโs inaugural jiujitsu tournament last Friday night but the fighting fit 51-yearold was up against an 18-year-old whoโd practised the martial art four years to her two.

Meanwhile Raglan 18-year-old Aram Higgins, who admits to having been โquite nervousโ before the comp, won both rounds of his fight with an armbar โ a technique used to get an opponent to submit. It was a โbrilliantโ event, says local jiujitsu teacher Dean Message who teaches Kiaido Ryu or mma (mixed martial arts) twice-weekly at Raglan Area School. He organised Raglanโs first fight night last week which saw 38 competitors โ more than heโd expected โ from all over the North Island fighting it out in the school hall. Kiaido Ryu is a family-oriented self-defence system which includes not only stand-up fighting like karate and kick-boxing, says Dean, but also the takedowns and controlled ground fighting of jiujitsu. โThis is the closest you can get to the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Champion).โ He told the Chronicle the tournament was supposed to be a small fundraising event, but with eight dojos or training groups involved โ Raglan, Hamilton, Cambridge, Thames, Auckland, Katikati,
Tauranga and Kerikeri โ it turned out to be a โfull house.โ That meant three fights being run at the same time with three referees. Itโs normally one ref doing one ring with three judges, Dean explains. At 29, Deanโs trained for 15 years in Kiaido Ryu throughout the country with different dojos, and plans now to organise three or four more Raglan events for the year. Itโs good for Raglan to see this form of mixed martial arts, he says. โItโs something that really hasnโt been here before.โ The discipline uses the coloured belt system to grade its students, similar to that used in karate, progressing from a white to a black belt. And Shahn, one of the original members of Raglanโs Kiaido Ryu training sessions, can vouch for its benefits โ not only in self defence but in self confidence and fitness. Now a green belt, she reckons she couldnโt do two push-ups when she started two years ago. โNow Iโm doing 75 (push-ups) for the belt level Iโm at.โ Edith Symes

Community garden 4th year of Panorama of Raglan Calendar germinating Down behind the Union Church Hall in Stewart Street an empty grassed space is getting a new lease of life with preparations well underway to turn it into a community garden.
The idea for the public garden came to local Hayley Vink when she saw how much a friend of hers in Hamilton enjoyed pottering about in a community garden in Powells Road. โItโs a really great garden and focal point for that community.โ says Hayley. Work on our equivalent began last week when Hayley and friend Vicky Beeby turned the first sod of soil. Now, a few days later about a third of the total garden area is dug. โThis is the tough part. Getting rid of the invasive weeds and clearing the space. Once weโve finished this weโll be adding layers above to create a raised mound,โ says Hayley. While the church is behind the project and financially supporting it the garden is a community project and this is something Hayley wants to stress. โIt will be here for anyone interested in growing veges. We plan to have a regular weekly gardening session on Fridays between 10 am and noon when equipment will be available, but people are welcome to come down at a time that suits them and potter about.โ Vege seedlings are already growing to be planted in the garden and at this stage things are on track for a โpublic dig and plantingโ on Sunday 23 October. Along with the circular main vege patch raised gardens will be built next to the fence line. If anyone wants to get involved or has old gardening tools or gloves they want to give to the garden project please get in touch with Union Church pastor, Jeanette Vink on Ph: 825-8330. Sue Russell
The โPanorama of Raglan 2012 Calendarโ is in the Bookshop and Trade Aid. Over the last 3 years many have been posted to show friends what a beautiful place we
live in. It is again in easier to post A4 format with 28 pages highlighting the variety of scenery and wildlife around Raglan, and still costs $15, with profits going to help Friends of Wainui with their work to maintain the bush and tracks on Wainui Reserve. The 76 photographs in the calendar have been taken by Raglan Ramblers and range from the harbour to Karamu Walkway, Adventure Waikatoโs cavern to Karioi summit, from whales to butterflies, and from Manu Bayโs tattooed rock to the 150 metre high dunes north of the harbour. The wellknown beaches are all included, but so too
Whipping up a winner at bowls
A famine is affecting 12 million people in the Horn of Africa right now and many adults and children alike would love to help. Hereโs an easy way you and your child can: your child can come to an art workshop where they make a beautiful clay platter. This platter will be auctioned off (probably to you!) and the money raised will be donated to the Horn of Africa cause. Auction will be held mid Dec. WORKSHOP: Weds 12th or Thurs 13th Oct 2-4 pm at The Old School Art Centre. Glazing Weds 26th or Thurs 27th Oct 3.30 -5pm. $15 To register please contact Joseph and Natasha Rao 825 0946
Our first local tournament, the Harborview Cup, also the first of our Aggregate ones, was held on Saturday 1st October with 20 players taking up the challenge. Our grass green has been โopenedโ for the new season and competitors enjoyed playing on it. The โwhipping windโ played havoc with many bowls...it was downright โhorridโ...a real good test for all bowlers so early in the season...but at least the rain stayed away. Games were of varying standards, some close others not so close, but overall three teams came out with two wins and one loss each. The winning team of Heather Dalbeth, Maurice and Shirley Cook gained 33 points...2nd place were Les Soanes, Wayne

Many have been taken from points which are only accessible with permission, though those taken from public roads and tracks are labelled in bold text. If youโd like to see the places portrayed in the calendar, Raglan Ramblers meet at 9am each Wednesday (except mid summer) in the Wainui Rd car park next to the Fire Station. All are welcome to join the 5 to 15km walks. There is no charge, except to share petrol costs, or for boat fares. If youโd like to help Friends of Wainui restore the bush area of the Reserve, join them from 9am on alternate Mondays. The next work morning starts at 9am on Monday 10th in the bush area just south of the Harbour Care Nursery on Wainui Rd. John Lawson
contact your local Sport Waikato office for details on event tickets, which will be available from the Raglan Library, Waikato District Council office in Ngaruawahia, and the Huntly Library. โIโm looking forward to a great night as we support our sportspeople,โ said Morgan District category winners are put forward to be considered for the prestigious Brian Perry Waikato Regional Sports Awards to be held Thursday 2 February 2012. Nomination forms are available from www.sportwaikato.org.nz or from any local Sport Waikato office.
Gadsby and Des Bishop with 31 points, and 3rd were Bill Bond, Jim Ardern and Pim Blair on 23 points. Very close call indeed. Congratulations to you all. Our squad of players who played at Huntly on Saturday 24th September in the Northern Zone Interclub missed bringing the shield back by one point...so close yet so far. Coming up is the Esther Smith 2x4x2 Pairs on Saturday 8th October and on 15th /16th October we will have the first of our Championship events, Optional Triples which will be โdrawnโ. Roll ups are still on Wednesdays and Saturdays, if no tournaments are on. Happy bowling Eileen Stephens

Winter warmers makes reading fun Getting Waikato kids into books just became a whole lot easier thanks to the Waikato District Libraries โWinter Warmersโ reading programme. Held annually, the free school holiday reading programme encourages children aged four to 12 years old to visit their local library and explore books. Waikato District Council, general manager stakeholder relations, Jo Ireland, said Winter Warmers was always an extremely popular event with spaces filling up very quickly, โThis yearโs theme is the Rugby World Cup so we envisage the programme will be even more popular than usual. We recommend parents register their children for
the programme right away, otherwise they may miss out, as spaces are limited. โThe programme involves children reading a book, and when they have finished their book, to report into the library to tell the staff what they enjoyed most about the book. Stickers are handed out after each book report and every book report gives the child an entry into the grand prize draw,โ she said. Winter Warmers will run from Monday 26 September to Friday 21 October. To sign up to the programme, children need to be or become a member of Waikato District Libraries. Libraries are located in Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Raglan, Te Kauwhata or Tuakau.
Community Board and Christmas lights for Raglan
For many years we have had Christmas lights brightening up Bow Street over the Christmas-New Year period. Various methods have been used to pay for them. It has always been a challenge to find the funding for the lights. Raglan now owns 20 sets, donated by Meridian Energy in 2010. These are a valuable asset. Erecting and taking down the lights is expensive. Only qualified lines people using a truck mounted bucket lift are allowed to work on the lights. They need to be installed in December and then and taken down again in January. The Community Board has
negotiated strongly with WEL Networks on undertaking the required work and agreed on a price of $6000. The Raglan Operational Support Unit has agreed to provide traffic control at no cost while the lights go up and down. Board members Bob MacLeod and Barry Ashby will be leading this project. At its last meeting the Community Board agreed to fund $2,000 of the cost from its discretionary fund, leaving $4,000 still needed to allow the lights to go up. The Board has proposed that the Raglan community sponsors the remaining cost on the basis of $200 per set of lights/ pole. This type of
sponsorship would be an appropriate way of covering the remaining costs. Combinations of folk may sponsor a set if $200 is way out of reach. So far we have nine sets of lights sponsored: 1. Residents and Ratepayers Assn. 2. Raglan website www.raglan.gen.nz 3. Journeyโs End B&B 4. ASR 5. Control Systems Ltd 6. Raglan Lions 7. Ray White Raglan Real Estate 8. Westpac Raglan 9. Orca Restaurant & Bar and Wainui Foodmarket
The Board understands that local organisations and businesses are hard pressed. We believe that it is important to have Christmas lights brighten up the town for residents, businesses and visitors. If you would like to support a set of lights please contact Barry Ashby on 825 6727. We need at least another 11 sponsors to make this happen. If we get more than 20 sponsors then more lights will go up! Rodger Gallagher Chairperson Raglan Community Board
Hamilton Party Hire are on the move
Hamiltonโs iconic Party Hire business has moved to a new purpose built location in Maui St, Hamilton. The mega-branch occupies a 4000sqm site which combines the two old branches previously located in Hamilton East and Frankton. The shift was primarily to provide a modernized one-stopshop for its customers and garner the benefits of combining all of its operations under one roof. โNorth Hamilton was a strategic choice for us because it had the availability of land to build, combined with the rapid growth of both residential and commercial property in the area,โ says Nathan Rillstone who with his brother Scott purchased the company just over five years ago. The new premise is unmistakably Party Hire with the iconic pink livery used across the feature wall making it easily spotted when turning into Maui St from the city end. The showroom is larger than the previous two combined offering customers a wide range of table settings and new range of disposables including themed kidsโ party packs. โThe hub of the operation is the new drive-through warehouse offering our customers the ease of picking up and dropping off, out of the weather,โ says Scott.
Hamilton Party Hire has served the greater Waikato area for more than twenty years, with customers located across the region from Paeroa to Raglan. Besides catering for parties, weddings, and reunions, in the past five years the company has established itself as a market leader in event infrastructure. It provides infrastructure for large scale events such as V8 Supercars, Parachute Music Festival, National Fieldays, Balloons over Waikato and more recently the World Rowing Championships. โWe have one of the largest ranges of marquees in the country so we have the flexibility to cater for events of any size and the experience to ensure a smooth and hassle-free buildโ says Nathan. โCustomers from Raglan can drive down Horotiu Rd towards The Base and be at our new premises in shorter time than it used to take to our Frankton branch and without the hassle of contending with mid-city trafficโ says Scott. Hamilton Party Hire stocks a wide range of items including barbeques and spits, chairs and tables, cutlery and crockery, glassware, refrigeration and portable toilets. Just look out for the bright pink wall on Maui St. Nathan and the team

We are supporting all teams but โGO THE ALL BLACKS.โ During the week days we stay open until 5.30pm, and maybe this is of use for that last minute item of hardware for those Raglan people who commute daily. Everyday someone new to the area comes into our store in the Dinsdale Shopping Centre. Have you checked out our store yet? We are receiving compliments by pleasantly surprised customers who didnโt know that a Hammer store such as ours existed. Itโs a lot bigger and a bit different from the normal. Gardening has really taken off now but just be ready in case we get a late frost. Customers are starting their vege and flower gardens. We are coming up to our fourth shipment of seed potatoes and if you want them for the Xmas Day meal you had better get them underway. Potting colour is moving again and the garden centre is looking fresh and pretty. We have a large and varied range of seed raising mix, composts and potting mix. We have a range of handtools, electrical, plumbing, paint and accessories, power tools or garden hardware to get that job done much easier. Vanessa is always adding to her giftware section with new ideas, the latest being authentic WORLD RUGBY CUP apparel and gear, which has been moving out the door. Get your next 9kg gas bottle filled now for the barbeque season which is getting closer all the time. Our latest addition is Swap a Gas 9kg bottle, which has taken off, a simple and faster way to get your next 9kg gas bottle filled. Painting jobs around the home are being prepared and started now with the warmer weather here. We stock New Zealandโs top brands: Dulux, British Paints and Wattyl, and we have experienced staff capable of tinting or matching and advising on your painting requirements. Key cutting is a specialty and the staff are all competent at cutting house and car keys and will take care of them while you wait, and our prices are the lowest around town. Everyone tells us.
