Dear Editor, Last Saturday morning the 8th October my young daughter and I were walking to the playground past the skate ramp and we noticed a small group of young lads picking up beers bottles off the field and attempting to pick up broken glass off the ramp itself. I asked what happened and they said they had come down for a skate but were unable to, be cause there was glass everywhere. Some idiots the night before had left heaps of bottles on the field, smashed more all over the ramp and broke some of the windows on the porta-com in the bridge construction area. I found them a broom and they set about cleaning it all up. I experienced such a range of emotions that morning, first anger and disgust at whoever did this, to an overwhelming feeling of pride and gratitude to these guys who showed such respect for their environment, community and fellow skaters. Instead of walking away and leaving it for someone else to deal with they just got stuck in and made it a safe place for everyone once again. I feel our community is in great hands if the up and coming generation show as much thought and consideration as these guys. Much admiration. Kristel Lindfield, Raglan

No blues for local French if ABs beat Les Bleus Laurent Lebreton รข€“ better known as Lolo where he works downtown at ASR, overlooking Volcom Lane รข€“ reckons it would be รข€œterribleรข€? living here if the French won. And he didnรข€™t think France would make it all the way anyway, he confessed to the Chronicle early this week. But heรข€™ll still be at the sports bar of the Harbour View Hotel in the company of fellow countrymen living in Raglan, watching the match on the big screen. Itรข€™s fun to be where spirits run high, he says, and heรข€™ll do his share of รข€œgood cheeringรข€?. Frenchmen Alex Schimel and Sebastien Delaux from Met Ocean Solutions in Wallis Street will be there too, they say, for รข€œthe atmosphereรข€?. But theyรข€™re not overly confident of success for the French. รข€œWeรข€™ve already lost once against the All Blacks,รข€? points out Sebastien. And the ABs are รข€œpretty impressiveรข€?, he concedes.
รข€œTheyรข€™re the pride of the country and people are attached to them.รข€? Alex reckons rugbyรข€™s รข€œnot such a big thingรข€? for the French anyway. But he promised to รข€œlook disappointedรข€? for his Kiwi friends should Les Bleus triumph. Meantime former All Black and now Raglan resident Arran Pene has extra interest in Sundayรข€™s final as heรข€™s also played rugby professionally in France, along with Japan. He believes New Zealand has done really well with the organising of the World Cup and says heรข€™s had good feedback from his customers at Hamiltonรข€™s Speightรข€™s Ale House, which he owns. He says people have got right behind the event and seem to be enjoying the hospitality. รข€œThereรข€™s a lot of happy tourists around.รข€? New Zealand can feel รข€œquite chuffedรข€? with itself, he adds, with massive turnouts to most of the games. Arranรข€™s quietly confident of All Black success come Sunday, believing the French could win only if they รข€œintimidateรข€? us. Out at Whale Bay, Raglan- bred Rhys
Ellison รข€“ a one-time Maori All Blacks regular whoรข€™s also played rugby for both Waikato and Otago, had three All Black trials and played for Munster in Ireland รข€“ believes an ABs win on Sunday is รข€œa done dealรข€?. France are รข€œvery, very luckyรข€? to have got to the World Cup final but the All Blacks have got there by form, he believes. Luckily for Rhys and his Irish wife Karen, the All Blacks didnรข€™t play Ireland so thereรข€™s not been much contention in their household รข€“ although they do fly the Irish flag. รข€œItรข€™s great to see the World Cup (event) with New Zealand,รข€? says Rhys. Heรข€™s impressed with the emotion at the three cup games in Hamilton and hoping for victory this weekend after the ABsรข€™ 24-year drought. รข€ห The Rugby World Cup final is also being shown live at other venues around town including Orca and the Yot Club. Awards recognise budding Raglan film-maker, sculptor The awards ceremony, at Southall School, also saw Raglanโs Lucretia Perkins win one of 13 scholarships up for grabs. The $2000 will help towards cross-crediting and finishing her media arts degree at Wintec next year, she says. Sheโs all but completed three years of Maori visual arts at Te Wananga o Aoteroa.

Arts Council RAFFA (Raglan Arts Film Festival Award) for best documentary on top model Danielle Hayes filmed on location at Manu Bay, Auckland and Hamilton. And his earlier work, โChronicles of Sky Childโ โ shot at Raglan Area School โ earned accolades at the same event last year. Edith Symes
Lucretia, 27, specialises in sculpture and three of her pieces are being displayed at ArtsPost in Hamilton for five weeks during the September-October Piiata exhibition, which is specifically for senior students and recent graduates of Te Wananga. Rising Raglan film-maker Turanga Kereopa โ just six weeks away from finishing his three-year media arts degree at Wintec โ wonโt have any trouble getting actors and equipment for his latest film, thanks to a win at the Waikato Community Arts Awards in Hamilton recently. He was one of three finalists in the Te Puawaitanga Toi Maori Scholarship award, and his win
gives him $2500 towards his latest end-of-year film โ a short drama called โJamieโ about a girl dealing with her past.
Sheโs also looking forward to exhibiting her work in December at Waikato Museumโs Waiclay exhibition, for which she was one of 45 applicants selected from 145 nationally.
Turanga, 24, told the Chronicle his surprise win โreally helps me outโ because it gives him the ability to not only pay his actors but to get the right film equipment.
Meantime Raglan Community Arts Council was a finalist in the creative community section of the Waikato Community Arts Awards for its innovative art trail established last year.
The short film is now in preproduction, he says, with shooting scheduled for this week.
The project involved a multipage full colour Raglan Art Trail booklet โ with 5000 distributed

Poulters pick up wins at surf champs Waikato surfers Ben Poulter and Sid West led their team to seventh overall at the 2011 National Scholastic Surfing Championships (Shipwreck Bay), after placing first and second respectively in the Under 18 Boys Division. Poulter got a 7.5 point ride right at the start of the 25 minute final to put the pressure on his opponents. He then got a 6.33 point ride before Sid West came storming back into contention with a final-high 8.67 point ride. With time on his hands West waited for another opportunity to arise to score
a 5.18 point ride and victory but Poulter slowly zeroed in on West as the clock counted down and when the last few waves came in, the two surfers had paddled themselves out of position and Westโs chance went begging. โIt got real tight because he (West) got that one big score but he didnโt have a back up luckilyโ said Poulter. I was happy to surf a left-hand point break in the final, it suits my surfing so that helped todayโ said Poulter whoโs other scholastic title was in the Under 14 Boys Division several years ago. Benโs brother Sam claimed

The reality of a new Raglan Wharf building came much closer this week with the delivery of the final plans which have been sent to contractors to cost. General manager water and facilities, Richard Bax says this step marks the closure of a long planning process which for former tenants and wharf visitors has required a patient outlook. โThe wharf building and its associated businesses there are sorely missed and itโs exciting to have the plans finalised. We can now secure a tender for the construction of the wharf, confirm positions for former tenants and look at proposals for complimentary business ventures,โ he said. โWeโll be looking at what potential businesses have to contribute to the character and the potential of the wharf area but no decision will be made until the former tenants have confirmed their return.โ To shortcut the process, a number of potential contractors have already been put on standby to cost the final plans and submit a tender. The successful tender and date for completion will be announced in November.

Raglan pair take milk of human kindness to orphan elephants Travelling from England to Nairobi in Kenya with a 23kg bag of SMA milk powder and French green clay had Sarah and Gareth Jones nervous about getting through Customs. But it was a breeze, say the Raglan couple, and Sarah got to fulfil a long-held dream of being up close and personal with the orphan elephants sheโd read so much about and, more importantly, of meeting the woman behind the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust with whom sheโs corresponded for 12 years. Finally, says Sarah, she got to meet her โheroโ โ Dame Daphne Sheldrick who in 1977 established the trust in her late husbandโs name and has, since โ87, successfully hand-reared more than 130 newborn and very young orphan elephants. Elephants cannot digest cowsโ milk, explains Sarah, so the Trustโs orphans are bottle-fed SMA formula which is exactly the same as that given to human babies. And the green clay, she adds, is famous for its miraculous healing properties. The Raglan couple also took with them a supply of old pantyhose, which are used to tie thin cotton blankets on the baby elephantsโ
backs to protect them from the sun, but also to keep them warm as they no longer have their mothers to shelter them. And sunscreen is used on their ears for protection. For 33-year-old Sarah โ with their gifts in hand โ it was an emotional meeting with Daphne and one which gave her โgreat happinessโ. Sheโd first read about two orphan elephants raised by the trust in Kenya a good decade earlier as a student vet nurse, and was so captivated by the tales she immediately struck up a long-distance rapport with this โextraordinary womanโ who has dedicated her life to Kenyaโs elephants. Daphne has, through 28 years of trial and error, perfected the milk formula and the complex husbandry essential to the rearing of milk-dependent orphaned elephants, says Sarah. It proved to be Daphneโs greatest challenge but also her greatest triumph. To be sharing tea and homemade cookies with this โmatriarchโ โ now in her late 70s โ in her own home within Nairobi National Park was, for Sarah, a truly โhumblingโ experience. Sarah and Gareth not only got to see the โivory orphansโ as theyโre called โ their mothers having
been poached for their ivory tusks โ wallow in their daily midday mud bath, open to the public, but also witnessed the nightly routine of putting the orphans to bed in their individual stockades, complete with a keeper on a mezzanine bed who comforts and bottle-feeds them every few hours. The 18 keepers become the orphansโ herd, working on a rotational roster to ensure no one orphan becomes attached to one keeper. โMilk-dependent baby elephants cannot survive alone, just like human babies,โ Sarah explains. โAnd theyโre milk-dependent for the first three years of their life.โ While the couple were there they saw the 13 nursery orphans in their tight-knit family herd looking out for each other and being the mischievious youngsters they are, but always running back to their keepers when scared or unsure. โWe were told as soon as they start taking milk and playing with the other orphans they have a good chance of survival,โ says Sarah. โItโs completely tear-jerking.โ From the Nairobi nursery the elephants are transported to the trustโs Tsavo National Park rehabilitation centre where the keepers take a step back, encouraging their proteges to become more independent as
Sarah Jones with an orphaned elephant a group and as individuals before leading normal lives among the wild elephant community at the park. The trust runs a foster parent programme, says Sarah who has now adopted an orphan called Naipoki, after the area in which she was found. It costs $50 US per year which goes towards the running of the trust. Each adoption comes with a fostering certificate and a profile (of progress). Sarahโs two previous adoptions have now moved on from the
rehabilitation centre. One has joined the wild herds of Tsavo National Park, the other has formed her own herd and has had a wild born calf of her own. And would she go back if given half a chance? โYes,โ says Sarah without hesitation. โIt was a dream come true with my husband right there beside me.โ The couple may not have a child of their own โ but they do have an adopted baby elephant. Course to help boaties cross the Raglan bar Another course aimed at saving the lives of boaties crossing the notorious Raglan bar is being held next month by Coastguard Raglan, with support from Waikato Regional Council. The Coastguard is holding the Raglan-specific course for boaties from 8.30am on Sunday 13 November at the Sunset Motel in Bankart St. The cost is $25 per person and lifejackets are required, as a trip out to the bar is included. Regional council harbourmasters will be providing safe boating resources and regional harbour guides to participants. โThe Raglan bar can be very tricky and hazardous to negotiate and there have been a number of serious capsizing incidents in recent years,โ Raglan harbourmaster Steve Soanes said. โWe urge anyone intending to cross the bar โ who hasnโt already learnt how to do so โ to attend the Coastguard Raglan course, which helps ensure boaties are more aware of how to negotiate it as safely as possible.โ Numbers on the course are limited. People can pre-register for the course with Coastguard Raglanโs secretary Bridget Green on 07 825 8089 or email raglancoastguard@gmail.com.
Lifejackets essential for safer summer boating As the summer boating season is set to kick off at Labour Weekend, Waikato Regional Council is reminding boaties about the need to carry enough lifejackets for everyone on board. A survey last summer of 1172 vessel users at 30 boat ramps across the Waikato โ mostly on the Coromandel coast โ showed more than five per cent still werenโt following the requirement to have enough lifejackets for everyone on board. Nearly a fifth of children observed during the survey werenโt wearing lifejackets. Taking into account the swimming ability of children 12 and under, plus their mental ability to cope with emergency situations, they are considered to be at higher risk on the water and under the councilโs bylaws must wear a life jacket. โTo improve boat safety this summer, we strongly encourage boaties to make sure they have the right amount of correctly fitting lifejackets and that children wear them when on the water,โ said navigation safety programme manager Nicole Botherway. Two waterproof forms of communication should be carried at all times when on the water, she added. The ideal was having a marine VHF radio or distress beacon (PLIB or EPIRB) clipped to clothing or lifejackets, with a cellphone in a sealed plastic bag as a back up.

Commitment growing for Raglan Christmas lights The Community Board has now secured pledges for nineteen poles in and around Bow St to be brightened up with Christmas lights over the Christmas-New Year period. At its last meeting the Community Board agreed to fund $2,000 of the cost from its discretionary fund, leaving a $4,000 still needed to allow the lights to go up. The Board has been approaching the Raglan community to sponsor the remaining cost on the basis of $200 per set of lights per pole. Combinations of folk may sponsor a set if $200 is out of reach.
So far we have sixteen sets of lights sponsored: 1. Residents and Ratepayers Assn. 2. Raglan website www.raglan.gen.nz 3. Journeyโs End B&B 4. ASR 5. Control Systems Ltd 6. Raglan Lions 7. Ray White Raglan Real Estate 8. Westpac Raglan 9. Orca Restaurant & Bar and Wainui Foodmarket 10. Inkledoo with Scott and Vernon 11. Raglan Four Square 12. Ann Gair and two friends 13. Raglan Club 14.Raglan Chamber of Commerce
15. 16.

The Board thanks these people, local organisations and businesses for support of this community initiative. We believe that it is important to have Christmas lights to brighten up the town for residents, businesses and visitors. If you would like to support a set of lights please contact Barry Ashby on 825 6727. If we get more than 20 sponsors then more lights will go up! Rodger Gallagher, Raglan Community Board
Chairperson,
First champion bowlers of the year Our first Champions for 201112 season challenged their way through the field to become our Championship Triples winners on Saturday & Sunday 15/16th October. We began the day playing on our lovely grass green, but then a nasty shower put paid to that, and fortunately, we have our Astrograss green which permitted us to continue with the Championships. Twenty-one players submitted their names to be drawn into Optional Teams giving us seven teams in total. This gave us a Bye to work with. After two rounds of โQualifyingโ only one team had two wins which meant that the other six teams (having had one win each) had to play off again to find the last three teams with two wins. In most cases the games were very close indeed. Day two saw Terry Greenโs team playing Maureen Wahangaโs team and Denny Robertsonโs team playing Graham Stephens
team. These games were fairly close most of the way...at the 12th end one game was 8all and the other was 9all...but then some wheels fell off till the 18th end!!! From here Maureen and her team of Sue Russell and Margaret Mead played against Denny and his team of Les Soanes and Des Bishop in the final, with Dennyโs team being the victors by quite a margin. Congratulations to you all. Well done. There were some classic shots played during this competition and, going with a rugby flavour, we had some great candidates for โman of the matchโ!

OPINION: Firm discipline for councillors. There is a recent interesting suggestion that regional council boards should have a central government representative who would ensure that proper attention is paid to avoiding pollution of waterways. This is a great idea, but why stop there? The whole emphasis of regional and city councils has became skewed towards supporting grandiose schemes that will โput them on the mapโ. What these bright ideas also accomplish is further burdens on ratepayers. My idea is that this government representative on local councils should have much wider powers, like the guy who is sent in to sort out schools whose governance has gone awry. Someone with greater power and authority to prevent the harebrained schemes councils tend to come
up with. I have in mind people like Dame Margaret Bazley who was an indomitable force reporting on sections of government before her retirement. What are the areas that councils that get carried away by? Cosmetic town planning like the expensive renovations in Hood Street and Garden Place, show pieces. Gardens, statues, works of art, all signs (they believe) of an intelligent forward-looking council. But above all, sport. So over the years we have had the stadium, recently having trouble paying its way, expensive long-term commitment to the V8s, sport as a partial function of the Claudelands Events Centre and now, by sheer chicanery, the velodrome.
by Ian McKissack
The government appointee on local and regional councils would insist that that these flights of fancy stop and councils stick to their core business, infrastructure and the environment. He or she could call in central government if there was serious delinquency, resulting in a period on a community work scheme or even a week in the stocks, for offending councillors. This control is necessary, particularly where sport expenditure is concerned. One of the reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire was the high cost of the gladiatorial games that were organized to keep the masses happy. We donโt want our local emperors taking us down that road to ruin do we?

Hannah lends the Chronicle a hand While many of us are accustomed to the Raglan Chronicle materialising in our mailboxes every Thursday, if you are a resident on Cliff and Wallis Streets you may have noticed your new delivery person, 30-yearold Hannah Campbell. Hannah was born profoundly deaf and blind with a little bit of sight in her right eye - symptoms brought on by congenital rubella where the virus affects the foetus in the first three months of pregnancy. Living in Raglan with her parents, Cloan and Gloria who own local restaurant Zaragoza, Hannah has been personally delivering the Chronicle to all the residents on Cliff Street as well as some of those on Wallis Street for the past two weeks. โOn a sunny day some people come out and say hi so thereโs opportunities for Hannah to meet new people too. She has a really good memory so she will probably remember if you say hi to her,โ says Cloan, Hannahโs father. Usually accompanied by her support workers, Louise Middlemiss, Pat Turner and Elise Verschoor, delivering the local community paper allows Hannah to enjoy some work experience as well as addressing some of her other needs. โHannah has some autistic-like behaviour, she folds the newspapers beautifully and places them ever-socarefully in the mailboxes. These kinds of activities give her opportunities to satisfy her needs for things like folding and
repetition,โ says Cloan. Part of a six-day programme, Hannah spends her Tuesdays and Thursdays in Raglan creating art and clay work or out at Louiseโs farm brushing and feeding the horses. Hannah also goes into Hamilton four times a week where she spends some time working at The Warehouse at The Base as well as swimming anything from 1000-1800 metres at the aquatic centre. Being prelingually deaf, meaning she had lost hearing before she had learned to speak, Hannah communicates using sign language. โItโs a learning process for us too and we are quickly learning the basicsโ says support worker Louise adding, โshe has her own signs she likes to use as well.โ Receiving individual funding through
the Ministry of Health based on an assessment of Hannahโs needs, the family have been empowered to put together their own programme for Hannah which gives her opportunities for routine, structure and community involvement while it also allows Hannah to employ local social people like Louise, Pat and Elise. Although Hannah sometimes faces frustrations in her daily life, mostly to do with communication, Cloan notes, โwhatโs most important is that Hannah has a safe and happy life.โ Looking ahead, Hannah will be busy with her weekly programme while keeping her friends and family on their toes with her great sense of humour.
