band Curragh and was then a founder member of the popular Manchester Celtic rock group, Toss the Feathers. In July of last year, Angela released her debut solo banjo album ‘The Gort Mile.’ The album’s title is a reference to her origins; Angela’s Grandfather, John-Joe Lally, came from Peterswell and won the Gort Mile race in the early 1920’s. Angela spent her summers in Peterswell, frequently visiting the family home of celebrated box player Joe Cooley, playing tunes with Joe’s brother, Jack. Described as a uniquely soulful banjo player, where technical mastery meets impeccable musical taste, Angela is at last sharing her considerable talents as a musician and composer with the wider world. Almost half of the tunes on the album are Angela’s own compositions. “The Gort Mile is a rare and spirited collection from an outstanding musician and teacher. Cherish it.” Mike Harding (Broadcaster and folk musician) Currently in the country for Irish Music Festival, Ceol Aneas, Angela will have a one-off show in Raglan on Wednesday, June 5, from 8pm at the Old Schgool Arts Centre. Garden frustrations vented on Facebook

MORTGAGE BROKERS Murtaghs Dermot M. Murtagh

furore has erupted over garden beds in Bow St with many taking to Facebook

to vent their frustrations. The comments on Raglan Notice Board questioned why ratepayer’s money was being wasted, the choice of new plants, the use of out-of-town contractors and lack of consultation. Feelings were running high with one local woman putting herself in front of the diggers to stop the work. Waikato District councillor Lisa Thomson expressed concern for the hardworking council staff at the library who copped a lot of flak for the work. “I respect people’s different viewpoints and understand when they feel frustrated but it’s how we express those viewpoints and how we work together as a community without degenerating into arguments and online attacks.” Lisa says many of the plants were dying due to the tough growing conditions or were getting so old they need replacing, and the much-needed work is part of WDC’s plan of works and will benefit the long-term health of plants in the beds. “The Puriri had die-back, the cabbage trees were diseased and the titoki was struggling because the soil wasn’t deep enough,” she says. All the work has been undertaken by local contractors, including Raglan Landscaping, Pipescape and Raglan lawns. The new planting design will include New Zealand natives such as dwarf toe toe, dwarf harakeke, purple harakeke, pohuehue, taatarahake and mikoikoi, which are all drought tolerant and have low maintenance requirements. “I saw the garden beds being dug up and they were only 50mm deep before they hit clay. They have dug down as far as they can go before hitting electrical cable and filled the beds with top soil and mulch.” The plants for the small, semi-circle gardens along Bow St have been chosen by the businesses adjacent to each garden giving them a unique personality. Planting will begin the week of June 10. Janine Jackson

Our occasional series on locals with a real Raglan history behind them

Elderly Swanns turn townies to leave only two of pioneer family still on land

Caroline - proud of her pioneering heritage - beside the stone monument on her Ruapuke property.

L

iving cheek by jowl in Raglan town is proving “very different” for John and Bev Swann after 53 years of comparative isolation on their remote Ruapuke farm around the back of Mt Karioi. Bev admits to being a shy person and says she’d feel insecure – like she was living in a goldfish bowl – if it weren’t for a high fence which all but encloses their new property down Kaitoke Bay way. That’s no great surprise considering the 77 year old’s spent her entire married life in the same Karioi Rd farmhouse, with uninterrupted views of the mountain’s rolling foothills and only distant neighbours. Bev admits it was a big wrench moving off the farm last year. And it took a good few months before the couple could say – on leaving Hamilton after an outing and carrying on to Raglan instead of taking the Te Mata turn-off (or Kauroa corner as they know it) – that “we’re going home”. Health issues forced the move. Seventynine-year-old John – a fourth-generation descendant of Captain James Swann, who came from Ireland and settled at Ruapuke around 1850 – now has Parkinson’s disease and can no longer drive.

To compound things Bev, whose father died early and who as a teenager helped her mother run their Waimaori Rd farm, now has achilles tendon trouble which means she can often be out of action too. “We were stuck!” she laments of the plight which forced them off the land. Their son Phillip – or ‘Swanney’ as he’s better known – now has full charge of the 400-acre family farm and additional 100 acres of his own. It was a much bigger block of about 1600 acres in John’s grandfather’s and great-grandfather’s (Captain Swann’s) time, but has been divided among family over generations. Until recently not only John but also his brother Len and sister Caroline remained in the back-blocks, farming the tough and uncompromising land they were brought up on by parents Mick and Kathleen Swann. But like John, Len is now retired, though retains a small lifestyle block and can often be found these days behind the counter at the Trade Aid shop in downtown Raglan. However Caroline, at 75, still farms just enough sheep and beef to keep her 300 acres of original Swann land – called ‘Papanui’ – ticking over.

And nephew Swanney’s around to help when she needs a hand shifting stock across the road, for instance. “You’ve gotta have two people (sometimes),” she concedes. “Seven of us grew up here,” the colourful Ruapuke identity told the Chronicle of the once teatree-clad property cleared by her father – in partnership with his brothers Richard, Paddy and Peter – back in the day. Caroline still lives in the very house built by their parents in 1938, a year before they wed. “Dad carted all his building materials across the beach in a sledge drawn by draught horses … and Mum taught us all by correspondence. We didn’t know any different.” Caroline farmed alongside her father for 13 years before the property was divvied up between John, Len and herself as the three Swann siblings still in the district. Her prize-winning ewes are an abiding interest, trophies and ribbons won at annual agricultural shows over the years jostling for space in the only home she’s ever known. Never married and without a family of her own, Caroline’s adamant she’s staying put until no longer able to manage. “I’m not going to give it (the farm) up.” She’s proud of her pioneering heritage and in 1977 had a family monument erected on a hill above the homestead overlooking the sea. “Captain Swann was the first one buried here,” she says, pointing out his name at the top of the inscriptions. A wooden fence frames the stone monument but it’s the second to be built, she chuckles, because cattle ruined the first by rubbing against it. “They used it as an itching post!” Caroline reckons she spent the money collected from an honesty box over the years to pay for the monument. The donations came from fishermen using her private access road to get to the infamous Papanui Point, where there have been many drownings over the years. However the rough stretch of road over hilly terrain has since become a public accessway managed by Waikato District Council. “I couldn’t keep metalling it,” explains Caroline of the hefty maintenance costs.

While Caroline, Len and John still have strong links to the Ruapuke land, their cousin Pat shifted long ago into Raglan West. His Nihinihi Ave property is in a prime spot overlooking the estuary and the airstrip, and he and wife Gwen enjoy living in the lower level while renting out the top level of the two-storey home they moved on site. Pat well remembers growing up at Ruapuke on his father’s dairy farm in the Matawha Rd area, attending both Te Mata and Raglan Area Schools. He too is a fourthgeneration Swann, his father Paddy a brother to Mick who built the house Caroline still inhabits. Pat’s memory straight off the top of his head, he laughs, is of the “windy, corrugated, dusty road (Ruapuke way).” At 58 – the youngest of the cousins still here – he’s closer in age to John and Bev’s children, the fifth generation of Swanns whose own children have attended the same local schools as their parents before them and now enjoy a very different Raglan district from that of their forebears. annual

interschool Western cluster Cross Country was hosted by Waitetuna school on May 24.

Margery O Connell, principal of Waitetuna school reports the event is the highlight of their year. "This year the weather was ideal. It was a beautiful sunny day and everyone was buzzing" Three boys battling it out for first place. Mako from RAS takes it out.

T

ake the hassle out of cooking on Tuesday nights for the month of June and head to the Raglan Town Hall supper room for warm soup and bread at The Souper Bowl. And it’s all for a good cause to raise money to help with the shortfall required to complete the Creative Space build at the Old School Arts Centre. Souper Bowl cooks Sarah Bing and Sarah Lancaster both former clay shed members say the community clay shed, which will take up part of the downstairs at the Creative Space, was a great place for them to make new friends and at the same time get creative. “The clay shed was one of the first things I joined when I moved here and I made some of my first friends there. Having a creative community space is important for mental health and wellbeing,” Sarah Lancaster says. “The clay shed was especially helpful for me when we first moved here and I was a first-time mother. It was great to go down to the clay shed and be alone, create and have some space,” Sarah Bing says. The pair will be in the soup kitchen with fellow clay shed friends Michaela Latimer, Belinda Thomas and clay shed coordinator Susanne GiessenPrinz. They kick off in the kitchen on Tuesday, June 4 at 5.30pm with a choko, sweet potato and lime, a Thai pumpkin and a mystery meaty soup all accompanied with a crispy bread roll

– there will be vegan and gluten-free options each week. It is a zero-waste kitchen and people are encouraged to bring their own containers for takeaways. Sarah Bing will have a selection of her colourful handcrafted ceramic bowls and soup mugs to purchase and filled with tasty soup for $35. The Creative Space needs $20,000 to complete the building by late November. The new building includes a new larger purpose-built clay shed area, a room for Raglan Lions to sort op shop clothing and on the first floor an additional multipurpose space to cater for meetings, drama, theatre, music, and more. Raglan Community Arts Council chair Rodger Gallagher says the new building will provide additional capacity to meet Raglan’s growing creative needs. "Our aim is to have the muchneeded new Creative Space building being used in November. To do this we need more money to finish the building. It’s great to see the clay shed members' Souper Bowl coming up with this fundraiser that makes it easy for all to contribute." Head to the Raglan Town Hall supper room on Tuesdays - June 5, 11 and 18 from 5.30-8.30pm for the best homemade soups in town. Soup and bread for $10, kids $5 and $35 to keep the bowl. The Souper Bowl team are also looking for donations of produce for their soups – contact info@ raglanartscentre.co.nz. Janine Jackson

McCormick and Shadbolt hit the Raglan Golf Club last year with their cheeky home-grown gags. “A great night”, “hilarious”, “great fun” were some of the reactions from a capacity crowd. “The guys rated their Raglan show one of the best,” said Golf Club president Peter Aim. “They couldn’t wait to come back so we decided to hold another show. “The last one was a great night so if you missed out get a ticket and join the fun.” The show, Friday, May 31, starts around 7pm, with the clubhouse doors open from 5.30pm. It’s not all about outstanding comedy, the $50 price of entry also includes a light meal. “We’re hoping for a good turnout,” Aim said. The comedy duo has played Raglan previously while McCormick’s relationship with the town goes back to the days of his first television documentary. In 1987 he paid a visit to Raglan and the result was the classic television documentary “Raglan by the Sea”. Get involved, pick up a ticket by calling Tim Ryan (027 593 4676). See you there. Raglan Shuttle is on call for pickup and delivery home after a great night.

such as reel to reel tape units”! The station was originally a joint project between Raglan Area School and the local community - inspired by then principal Beau Rewiti’s background in the broadcasting. After getting a temporary broadcasting

may have been lacking as many people remember the students using lunch-time to broadcast Gangsta Rap around the school (and town). Perhaps it was that or the departure of Beau Rewiti but the station struggled for its first few years. The location away

from the middle of town didn’t help either - the lack of visibility led to a lack of volunteer DJs which led to a lack of time on air, which just reinforced the visibility problem. The station was very excited however to enter the age of automation with the purchase (for $755) of a 10-disc CD changer. Now music could be broadcast 24/7 - provided the last DJ for the day remembered to push the repeat button! Around 2000 Raglan Community Radio moved location to the bottom of Bow St for a year and then into the old band room in the town hall. This choice location bought a resurgence of support with over 40 DJs producing a crazy variety of shows but... The station’s history is full of ups and downs, the worst of which was probably getting forced off the air by the Ministry of Commerce in 2000. The relocation of studio and transmitter to the bottom of Bow St caused interference to TV reception at the Harbourview Hotel. This was bad enough

in itself but when the Ministry discovered that our license has mistakenly listed our broadcast site as the campground (no one knows why) they put us off the air for several months until the paperwork was sorted out. A near closure of the station around 2010 led to a massive revamp of Raglan Community Radio and the employment of a manager to take the load of the volunteers. It was an idea that was first mooted in 1995 and it has turned out to be a good one because the station has stayed on a steady footing ever since. It took a massive amount of work from volunteers to get set up for an employee but they were finally able to relax when the station manager walked in to work on 3rd September 2012. These days the station is thriving, with a great variety of DJs and shows, and we’re planning a big event in November to celebrate the 25th anniversary. Stay tuned to 98.1FM (or listen online at www.raglanradio.com) for more details!
