Raglan-

Held at Wainui Reserve above Raglan’s iconic black sand beach, Soundsplash offers a weekend for freedom of expression inspired by music, creativity, surf and sun. Originally ran from 2001-2008, Soundsplash was voted “Festival of Choice 2005/2006’ by Rip It Up Magazine. After a few silent years, Zu Entertainment Ltd. is excited to reestablish the hallmark event within the New Zealand Festival Circuit. Soundsplash has transformed itself to become a multi-genre festival with an array of performers, highlighting world-class music across four stages, for three days. The Festival supports off-the-grid and innovative new ideas, including architecture and sustainable installations that push the boundaries of lo-fi modernity. The festival brings over 50 artists across four massive stages, the line up includes Sticky Fingers, The Black Seeds, Tiki Taane, State of Mind and more. Some of Raglan’s finest talent is also featured, including: Cornerstone Roots, Jamin-I, B-Rex, Mighty Mighty, Brown Brothers, Dubsonic, DJ Atmosphere, Jinja Cat, King Macka, Drulox, Dealt Fairly, Table Suede and Strangely Arousing. Your festival ticket gives you access to three days of great sounds and summer vibes, all set in beautiful Raglan with Karioi and the Tasman Sea as the backdrop. Along with great music, the festival features vendor stalls, food stalls and activities for all ages.

Overnight stays are included with your ticket. You’ll have your pick of 3 epic spots: The Neighbourhood is a 2 minute walk from the festival entrance and is for tents only, the Comfort Zone (5 minute walk from fest) is where you can park your car/van next to your tent or create a group zone, or the Fields of Joy. A 10 minute walk from the Festival entrance, but the epic views are worth it. Soundsplash Festival is an all ages event for the young to the young at heart. The return of Soundsplash marks it as the only outdoor music festival in the Waikato Region. Soundsplash Festival will work with Xtreme Zero Waste to carry on the tradition of Soundsplash being a Zero Waste Event. No glass will be allowed at the festival. Festival goers are encouraged to be conscious about the items they bring to the festival and will have easy access to recycling and rubbish stations around the festival. In years past Soundsplash was known for recycling 85% of the waste from the festival. Organisers hope to achieve this again for years to come. Last minute tickets are on sale through 7 January, and can be purchased via Eventfinda: http://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2016/soundsplashmusic-festival/raglan. The festival is open to all ages. Ticket specials are available for students and youths ages 15-17, ages 14 years and under are free with a ticketed adult or legal guardian. There is also a group discount ticket option as well. Visit Soundsplash online at soundsplash.co.nz, or follow Soundsplash on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for the most up-to-date festival details and information.

M

egan Hockly’s paintings all start off bright and colourful.

And then she picks up the brown and black paint to do the shading. “That’s when it can go … really dark,” she says, finding the words and giving them great emphasis. The Raglan artist is no stranger to dark but now, “I am really stoked with where I am at. I’m 40 and things are good. It’s been a bit of a rough ride”. About three weeks ago, Megan moved into a studio at the premises of Raglan sculptural artist Chris Meek. The last few years of Megan’s life have mostly been taken up looking after her young girls, Imogen, 3, and Evie, 2, so there hasn’t been much time for art. “I have done the odd thing here and there, but when Chris said this space was available I grabbed it. “I have been kind of lucky because I have always had a garage or a room to paint in, made my own space wherever we have lived. But I have loads of stuff, art stuff … I moved in here and it’s been the best thing, because it’s not at home.” She’s working towards two events: The Raglan Arts Weekend (January 30 to

WHAT’S ON AT THE Raglan Club 22 Bow St 07 825 8288

February) which is the first time she has taken part, “just because my girls were little”, and an exhibition at Soul Gallery in Hamilton. “Yeah, I’m really excited about making some new work. I don’t know what it will look like and what it will be about but I love it. It’s nice to be able to (have my own studio) and have no distractions.” Well, apart from self-taught taxidermy artist Annick Faubert, who has a studio right next door to Megan’s. “Yesterday I was painting away and she was out the back washing the skin of a rabbit. It’s really macabre. It’s nice to have inspiring people around.” The idea is for the three artists – Megan, Chris and Annick – to each hold an exhibition onsite each year. “So, I’m just working towards that, and whatever else pops up.” Megan says she paints from her subconscious, “which sounds weird but unless I have a commission or a set idea, they just evolve, and I talk about what’s happening in my life at the time. “They can be dark. Lots of people like the dark (work) but I say I have to get through the dark to make the dark.”

Megan says hanging her work makes her feel pretty vulnerable. “Most of my art is therapeutic, it’s pretty much autobiographical. “I try so hard to paint landscapes but I just can’t do it,” she laughs. On her easel is a large painting of her and her three siblings. It’s very bright, at the moment. But Megan says she’s hoping not to overdo the dark with this one. “We had been down to the (Hamilton) Gardens and were going to spread (Mum’s) ashes. “She died three years ago. It was really sudden; it was a real shock for all of us. I don’t think any of us have come to terms with it. But it’s brought us closer as siblings. “It’s been three years (since Mum died) and we still haven’t done the bloody ashes. But we catch up once a year in the gardens.” Megan says with RAW coming up she will be trying to pump out as much work as she can. And she’s hoping to take some workshops in chalk paint, revamping old furniture. “Having this space, people will be able to come here for it, so that’s in the pipeline.” Inger Vos Image thanks to Stuart McKenzie

R studios during the long Anniversary Weekend

aglan artists will throw open the doors of their

for the town’s seventh annual Arts Weekend. Around 30 artists will be exhibiting over the three days, showcasing an impressive range of painting, ceramics, photography, jewellery and wearable art. The Raglan Arts Weekend is the highlight of the Raglan arts calendar,” says arts facilitator Jacqueline Anderson. “We have a very talented group of artists in our little community and it’s always exciting to see them unveil their latest pieces.” Many artists will be exhibiting from their own studios, while others will be located within the Old School Arts Centre on Stewart Street. All work will be available for purchase, and the artists themselves will be in attendance to chat about their ideas and creative processes. This year, for the first time, they’ll also be an Exhibition and Silent Auction taking place at the Old School. This will feature one piece of artwork from every artist taking part in the weekend. “The Exhibition is a great way to get a feel for each artist’s work, and we recommend starting your weekend here,” says Jacqueline. “Once you’ve had a browse and maybe placed a bid, you can pick up a copy of the Raglan Arts Weekend Guide and head out and explore.” Another good reason to head to the Old School is the Little Food Fest, featuring a tasty array of foods and beverages from local growers and producers. The Little Food Fest, which takes place on the Saturday and Sunday, was first

added to the Arts Weekend last year and proved an instant hit. Vendors will be dishing up a mouth-watering selection of treats, from shareable plates to home-made pies and allnatural ice-blocks, and there will also be live music to add to the festival experience. The Artists’ Open Studios are open for viewing on Saturday 30 January, Sunday 31 January and Monday 1 February, from 10am to 3pm. A select number of studios will be open until 5pm, see the Raglan Arts Weekend Guide for full details. The Old School Exhibition and Silent Auction will be open daily from 16 January to 1 February, 10am-3pm. The Little Food Fest takes place on Saturday 30 January and Sunday 31 January, from 10am to 3pm at the Old School Arts Centre. Copies of the official Raglan Arts Weekend Guide are available at the Raglan Information Centre, the Raglan Old

School Arts Centre, at Raglan cafes and galleries and other locations around the Waikato. You can check out participating artists’ work via facebook.com/raglanart. Raglan potter Tony Sly began working with clay in Hamilton in 1980. He had studios in Hamilton before moving to Raglan 12 years ago, where he developed his signature rustic domestic pottery. He later added a classic range, with summery hues, and more recently a finer, modern stoneware series that is perfect for tableware. Tony can usually be found working happily with his artisan assistants in his small-batch production studio in the idyllic setting of Raglan Wharf, with water lapping at his back door.

Based at the wharf, you are now a well-known destination for visitors to Raglan. What makes your work/space unique? Our shed at the wharf is my dream studio. There is such great light and space to work and show our pottery. We have the space to host visitors in the studio so people can experience pottery making up close and really gain an appreciation that we make every piece one at a time - with up to 24 steps over a four to six week period.

What is it about your business that you enjoy most? After 30 years of pottery making the part I enjoy the most is actually being at my wheel producing simple useful shapes. It’s no different from my first night class, its still about the clay under my hands. Good to know sometimes, as there is plenty that’s not so much fun when you are running a small business. What happens in a typical day at the workshop? A typical day in the studio

starts with checking in with the team to see what the ‘making’ priorities are for the day. It’s like running a kitchen - lots of timing and logistics. My studio manager Eiko Yoshimura keeps me in order with her great feel for timing and managing the order of events that need to occur. What developments have happened in the last year? This year we commissioned Tamara West, whose food styling and photographic work I have

long admired, to shoot our product ranges for the new website and online store. We are thrilled with the result and have received great feedback from our customers who now have the convenience of ordering pieces online. Who is the great team behind you? We are a team of five here at the pottery. Amber Olsen has recently joined us as shop and wholesale account manager, assisted part-time by Maree Harris. Marcus Wills

does an amazing job glazing and firing the kiln and Eiko Yoshimura manages the studio production. What can we expect from Tony Sly in 2016? 2016 will see us focus on our new ‘Modern Range’, which has been put together in collaboration with my foodie friends for use in restaurants and cafes. I live on two acres in Te Mata, so I’m also hoping to build a wood fired kiln at home now I have the space.

Telling someone that you have surfed in Raglan is a story that captures attention and admiration from fellow surfers around the world. Raglan’s surf history only began in the 1960’s, but since then it has shaped the town into what it has become today.

Ha

unched over a table with kaleidoscope of multi coloured Posca pens splayed around him, surfboard artist Kaya Rayner’s ‘workspace’ may not be the most conventional. Then again, like the designs that he lays down, ‘conventional’ probably isn’t a characteristic he’d want to adhere to. You won’t see much surf-related art adorning Kaya’s custom work, drawing influences from tattoo flash and with a street aesthetic, his style is more about the “clean, solid, simple stuff.” From Batman and Ol’ Dirty Bastard right through to a tattooed Jesus and doped out Raoul Duke, Kaya brings his subjects to life with an edge that is distinctively his own. Talk us through your process from brief to finished product? What materials do you use to create your art? I’ll usually meet with a client if they are in town or coordinate it through e mails. We talk about concepts, style, colours and design. I’ll sit for a while and just stare at the board for a while and try and picture what I’m about to do. I think the design part is a big thing for putting on surfboards. You don’t want something that makes it looks heavy and slow, or a big thick design on the nose of the board making it look top heavy while you were surfing. So yeah, placement is everything. I use paint pens most of the time, and some times will

throw some spray paint in the mix. Once board is finished it’s off to be clear coated then handed over to the client once it is done. What are some of your favourite pieces you have done? Yeah.. some boards are really hard to give back. I do a lot of skulls/reapers and really enjoy doing those. So those would be my favourite boards. What are you inspired by creatively? Inspiration comes from a few different places. Music, graffiti, tattooing.. the list go’s on! Favourite artists? Not sure I have a favourite artist. Always been stoked on various tattoo and skateboard artists more than just a single person. You were also a musician as well, how does music fit into your art? Yeah, music and art go hand in hand for me. If I’m painting boards, music is defiantly in the background and have always loved album cover art too! Favourite songs and/or bands? Not sure I have a favourite band either. Depends what mood I’m in. Big fan of hardcore/punk, Rap.. and Fleetwood Mac. Favourite song at the moment has to be Antagonist AD’S - Dogs Blood. Hard, fast and good lyrics. Favourite things to do in Raglan over summer? Surf three times a day and drink cold beer. Get to the local butcher and fire up the barbie with some good mates.

From a handful of local surfers and no surf shop, things have definitely changed. Surfing has been embedded into the heart of Raglan and plays a vital role in the wellbeing of our community. Whether you are a sea-salted veteran or a fresh starting grommet, there is no denying the excitement and adrenaline rush you feel when you get to your feet for the first time. If you are new to Raglan or have visited our black sand beaches once or twice before, there are a few things one should know to make your time surfing in Raglan fun and safe. • The ocean is a dangerous place. New Zealand costal waters are some of the most ever changing and raw in the world, so take note. If you are not familiar with the open ocean ask someone for advice. If you can see a person that looks like they know what they are doing, it is probably because they have put their time in to learn, understand and have respect for the ocean. • Total beginner? Stick to the beach. Although it might sound cool to say you’ve surfed the infamous Manu Bay, during the peak summer season the congested lineup on the Points can be a dangerous place for inexperienced surfers. If you are not confidant in your ability, surf the beach. It’s a perfect area to learn and is recommended for yours and everyone else’s safety.

• Feeling pretty confident about your skills? If you’ve been surfing for a few years, The Point might be the reason you’ve made your way to Raglan. During the summer the lineup can be very crowded, so be respectful, wait your turn and don’t drop in. • Women deserve waves too. Surfing lineups are stereotypically a masculine dominated environment, but woman have as many rights to waves as men. Give some respect to the Ladies of the line up, and a small amount of encouragement could make someone’s day. • No one owns the waves, but some have been here long enough to lay a pretty good claim. There are some surfers in the line up who have lived and surfed in Raglan since the 60’s. They are part of the community and have helped Raglan become the town it is. Be considerate to everyone in the line up, you never know who you could be surfing next to. • Attitude could get you more waves than ability. You can be the world’s greatest surfer but with the wrong attitude, catch nothing. The ocean is for everybody to enjoy, and no one owns the waves. However respect and appreciation for etiquette will go a long way to getting more waves. Leave your arrogance on the land and remember to enjoy yourself out in the water, because that’s what surfing is for, enjoyment and fun! • There is a new timetable for the Surf Lifesaving Club. Due to an unfortunate cut in budget, Regional Lifeguard Services will only be available from the 21st of December to 22nd of January. Outside of these dates, volunteers will patrol the beach on the weekend only. Whether you are heading out into the water to surf or swim, be smart, considerate, respectful and stay safe in the ocean.

OK – Whaingaroa Organic Kai was started 8 years ago by one family looking for a way to bring bulk, organic foods to Raglan at an affordable price. Fast-forward 8 years, more families, a bigger, brighter, broader range of products, and you’ll find the results down Electric Avenue, behind Volcom Lane. At WOK the broader vision is to encourage more local food production. We’ve got local salad, pesto, honey and eggs. Organic meat, mushrooms and vegetables. Gluten free granola, Raglan Coconut Yoghurt and of course, Clare’s legendary (sugar-free) Caramel Slice. There’s a lot to consider about food these days, and at WOK we are passionate about Whole Foods. Are you looking for gluten-free, sugarfree, dairy-free? Are you vegetarian, vegan, paleo, raw? We think food should be fun and that it shouldn’t cost the Earth. For the best value, serve yourself from one of our

many bulk bins containing organic nuts, seeds, dried fruit, grains, flours and beans; even coconut sugar. We believe healthy food should be affordable, and we do our best to minimise plastic waste. We also put together vege boxes twice a week (actually we use beautiful jute bags, designed in Raglan). We source organic/ spray free fruit and veg from around the North Island, as much locally as possible. Choose from canned goods, breads, mushrooms, milks, pasta, breakfast foods and more. You pick exactly what you want from our website and we’ll pack it for you – just call into the shop to order your bag. Staff Pick: Fix and Fogg ‘Smoke and Fire’ Crunchy Peanut Butter. heryl Beere is passionate about food. Not just any type of food, she is passionate about raw food and whole food—Real, authentic food. This passion has inspired her for almost 30 years. It got her an education and helped her open up the Atomic Café in Auckland. It helped her become a published author and inspired her to move to California where she furthered her education. Eventually it even took her on tours around the world. Now this passion is the fuel to the fire that has helped her create The Local Eatery. Cheryl has been cooking for our tamariki at Let’s Grow for the past year and a half. After the parents started asking about the food she was making for the children, she was inspired to share her love with more of the community. When she found out the space next to The Herbal Dispensary was available, she approached Bronwyn and Geoff about her idea. The Local Eatery aligns with the health and wellbeing practices of the Dispensary and will be the perfect neighbour to the health food shop. Previously the space was used for holiday accommodation, so Cheryl had to give it a total makeover. From

knocking out walls to installing an industrial kitchen area, Cheryl and her team have been working nonstop to get things ready for summer. The inspiration for the interior design comes from Cheryl’s love of recycled items. She took some of the elements that were previously in the space and made stands from the wood that was removed and used pallets to create the tables. They added a patio out front, and a greenroom in the back, which can also be used as a private dining area. There will be a sand pit for the kids and fresh herbs coming in from the Dispensary gardens. As for the menu, Cheryl brings her worldwide influence to The Local Eatery and adds an extra flair to the already thriving dining culture in Raglan. While in California she studied Macrobiotics and through that her love for wholesome food grew. Cheryl then spent 5 years touring the world as a personal chef for various musicians. Taking advantage of cooking with the local ingredients in each new city they arrived in. She then worked for Google as their vegetarian chef before moving back to Auckland. These experiences have had a big influence in the menu at The Local Eatery. To keep offerings fresh the daytime menu will change daily. You

can expect to see tasty baguettes, ramen (with homemade noodles) and many other fresh, healthy options. As well as homemade soda, kombucha and more. The Local Eatery will also offer the first walk up juice bar in Raglan. Featuring smoothies and juices made to order. No need to go inside, the bar can be accessed from the front window on the patio. When The Local Eatery opens for evening dining, it will bring a whole new element to the Raglan food scene. During her time in California, Cheryl would road trip down to Mexico. Eating her way through street cart tacos, experiencing authentic mole dishes, tamales and more. Cheryl plans to bring her love of Mexican food to Raglan. Pending her liquor license approval, she hopes to offer tasty margaritas and a boutique selection of tequila to accompany the Mexican fare. Small plates and tapas will also be available, and wine flights too, so visitors have a chance to taste wine from around the world. It’s safe to say that as much as we are known for our surf, we’re slowly becoming a foodie’s destination as well. And The Local Eatery just might be the missing link. The Local Eatery will be open daily from 10am to 3pm. Karamea Puriri

Cooking up a social buzz Over the past year, the dining scene in Raglan has really taken off. From well established restaurants to a handful of vibrant new places, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to great food. Stroll down Bow Street sweets, sushi, burritos and curries to seafood, burgers and pizza. Venture slightly out of town and you have the likes of the wharf, Rock-It Cafe and the Raglan Food Department. Taste the wonderful array of food that our town has to offer and don’t forget that we now have a great shuttle service to call if you need a lift!

T

he Social Club has added a buzz to the footpath down Bow Street since opening six months ago. Owners, Rach and Aaron Bidois have been working with their talented team to bring some tasty, healthy treats to the menu. They look amazing on the plate and taste even better. Cool off with an iced coffee or smoothie, or try out one of their delicious vegetarian/ vegan friendly cabinent and menu items. For casual food in the evening, they also offer

their classic Ragburgers. These tasty burgers are made up from scratch and almost melt in your mouth. Rach and Aaron ran The Sugar Bowl Cafe in Hamilton for 10 years before making the decision to bring their business to Raglan. The vibe of The Social Club has been inspired by their love of 90’s grunge– with a classy twist. Their desire to provide some healthy vegetarian and vegan friendly alternatives. Find your favourite dish at The Social Club, seven days a week.

RAGLAN GYM: STRONG BONES THE KEY TO A PAIN FREE LIFE

A

re you over 50 years of age? Have you broken any bones or have a family history of osteoporosis?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions you should consider talking to your healthcare provider about a bone density test and develop a plan to protect your bones. Bone density is a medical term normally referring to the amount of mineral matter per square centimetre of bones. In addition to helping you lose fat, build muscle, boost mood, improve sleep and so much more, weight training also helps improve bone density. Maximum bone density is generally reached around age 30 where bone mass begins to decline naturally with age. Although you may not be in a high risk group, strengthening bones should be a priority, as the more dense you can make your bones, the more you can lose over time without suffering the negative consequences. How can you increase your bone density? Weight bearing exercise and resistance training are crucial to increasing bone density along with taking bone support micro nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D, not smoking, and addressing medical and hormonal issues that may be predisposing you to osteopenia or osteoporosis. Not only can weight training increase bone density, it can also improve muscle mass,

e caught up with Candide & Steve Reid, owners of Raglan Kayak and SUP, to get some tips on how to make the most of Raglan harbour this summer with family and friends and stay safe. How long have you been operating your tours and rentals in the Raglan harbour? We are starting our 13th summer! The harbour is a way of life for us and we have seen a lot on the water in that time. What are the top 3 safety tips you would give people that are new to kayaking and paddle boarding in Raglan? Try your new equipment before heading out on a mission - and don’t go alone! It’s important to know what the tide and the wind are doing - check the weather forecast so you can plan accordingly. Always wear a life jacket and bring a cell phone in a waterproof bag.

When is the best time of the day to explore the harbour? Aiming for the morning is a good idea as it is often calmer; the sea breeze tends to rise in the afternoon. We like to plan our outings with the incoming tide, which makes it safer too. What is the top rated spot for people to discover? If you are after beautiful scenery, then it has to be the Limestone Coast. It’s only a paddle away and is truly a stunning piece of paradise! Where can we find you if we want to get some tips before going on the water? We operate daily all summer from the Bow Street jetty by the water’s edge. Come have a chat with us whether you are renting our equipment or using your own, as it’s our pleasure to help people plan fun and safe excursions. Raglan Chronicle Review: “Wayne had expertly chosen horses to suit our ability and within minutes had given us

all the information we needed to handle our horses, giving confidence to those of us who hadn’t ridden for years as well as those who had never ridden before. Our small party was soon on its way up the hillside. Experiencing this landscape from horseback is truly brilliant, fun and exciting. After riding through bush, across fields, rocky streams and steep sloping dunes we ended up down at the waters edge at Ruapuke Beach. We rode the horses into the water, where they enjoyed getting sprayed by the waves. A good canter along the long black sand beach was an exhilarating way to end the trek and head us back in the direction of the farm. Wildcoast really does provide everything you need to completely unwind, relax and recharge. You will leave feeling uplifted, energised, and already thinking of an excuse to come back for more!” Please ring Wayne or Penny on: 078250059/0274305526. wildcoast.co.nz. 1549 Whaanga Rd, Ruapuke Beach (opposite Ruapuke Motor Camp) Bookings essential.

his year’s Raglan Summer Holiday Guide is a slightly different beast compared to previous years. To finish off 2015, we really wanted to showcase what Raglan has to offer to locals and visitors alike. In the past year or so there’s been quite a few changes happening about town from new retail shops, new dining experiences to a handful of exciting new businesses. We hope our summer holiday guide reflects the vibrant community we live in and helps you plan your summer holiday activities. This year we’ve been pretty busy at the Chronicle office. We have welcomed new team members Karamea Puriri as well as Angela Williams who you may have met through their work with the Raglan Chamber of Commerce. We would also like to introduce our new lead writer Inger Vos, a local, who previously worked for the Waikato

Times. We farewell our wonderful accounts manager Shelley Meek as well as Rachel Benn our previous lead writer, both have been great assets to our team and they will be sorely missed. We would also like to thank all our advertisers that support the Raglan Chronicle and our various products, without them we would not have a community newspaper to publish every week so thank you all for your continued support. Lastly we have some exciting changes in the works for next year including a revamp of our website raglan.net.nz and we are also planning to offer some new digital marketing services to the community… so watch this space! We wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Please stay safe and watch out for each other during this busy time. The Raglan Chronicle Team

Xtreme Zero Waste is Raglan’s multi-award winning recycling and waste management centre, dedicated to diverting waste from landfill. At approximately 75% diversion from landfill, they are turning Raglan’s waste into resources and moving forward towards zero waste. Along with their waste management, this year alone they have delivered Zero Waste Education programmes to 210 schools and over 1,400 classes to more than 35,000 students. Additionally their restoration project has planted 6,000 trees and their on site pest management scheme has been highly effective. They have also successfully shared their business model with 46 other community groups including Wanaka Waste Busters, Arapuni Rural Recycling Centre, Seagull Reuse Centre in Thames and more recently a network of groups in Auckland City.

and everyone in between please prepare your recycling for kerbside as well as possible at this busy time. Keep paper separate from the flattened cardboard, lids off plastic bottles, and please wash and squash both plastics and cans. We take plastic containers 1-7, but please, no broken glass. It’s not fair for the boys to be wading through nappies and dangerous items in recycling bins. Please think of them when you’re doing your recycling, and if you’ve had a big party, please bring the debris up to the centre. Thank you! Another huge thanks to anyone bringing quality items to the centre

for reuse. If you’re on a tight budget this Xmas, Kaahu’s Nest, our site shop, the wood yard and metal yards are great places to find inexpensive treasures. Lastly, let’s all take responsibility for litter, especially next to the harbour or ocean. Please pick up litter even if it’s not yours, as the wind is constantly blowing plastic into the sea. More than 100,000 sea animals die each year after ingesting or becoming entangled in plastic. Take it easy, be patient and have a great Christmas and New Year. From the Xtreme Zero Waste team.

U lost ever – The Round Tent

tterly the best place to get

in Raglan.

We had no particular reason or excuse to go away for the weekend, except for it was our first child free weekend in 2 months that happened to coincide with availability at The Round Tent (serendipitous indeed). Set about 10km out of Raglan this amazing glamping experience will set you back about the same

amount as a night in an Auckland hotel but leave you more refreshed than a night in the city ever could. With a rural outlook over farm and a river (complete with alpaca’s and sheep wandering past every hour or so) from the moment you arrive everything feels almost too perfect to be true. Incredibly private we didn’t see anyone the entire time and we felt instantly at home. We wanted to make the most

of our stay and not worry about driving home after a few drinks so we bought our own wine and food and cooked some steak and prawns on the bbq and sat there sipping Moet while we watched the sun set. Just to set the record straight here, sipping Moet is not usually something we do (although I could get used to it!) – I won a bottle at work and it seemed the perfect occasion to have it – it totally was. Everything has been thought of

– from the wonderfully funky and eclectic mix of furniture, to the wide range of DVD’s, serving platters and games. There was literally nothing else we could have asked for. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on (I would love to know where they get those pillows!) and the air conditioning kept the tent (or I should say yurt) at a comfortable temperature all night. Forget the best glamping

experience around, The Round Tent is the best accommodation around the Auckland region. Hands down. Loads of room for two, they even have bunk beds for little ones. But if you can get them babysat, I would thoroughly recommend going that way instead. Review by Cat MacNaughtan @ gettinglost.co.nz. For bookings head to theroundtent.co.nz or phone 021 428 808.

What’s So Special About the Birth of Jesus?

30 things you might not know were predicted centuries before Jesus was born… HIS BIRTH God promised Abraham that a saviour would come a) from one of his descendants, b) through Abraham’s son Isaac, c) through Isaac’s son Jacob, and d) from the tribe of Judah (2,000 BC). Jesus’ genealogy traces right back to Abraham, his son Isaac, Isaac’s son Jacob, and Jacob’s son Judah. The prophet Nathan predicts the saviour will be an heir of King David (1,500 BC). Matthew’s gospel states, ‘This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David…’ A woman rather than a man would be the key to the saviour’s birth (4,000 BC). God causes Mary to become pregnant before her marriage is consummated. The prophet Isaiah predicted the saviour would be born of a virgin (735 BC) . Matthew’s gospel states that the child within Mary was conceived miraculously by the Holy Spirit. The prophet Micah predicts that the saviour would be born in Bethlehem (710 BC). Matthew’s gospel says, “Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of Herod. The prophet Jeremiah predicts a massacre of children at the saviour’s birthplace (700 BC) . Herod sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under.

HIS MINISTRY A messenger would prepare the way for him (735 BC). In Luke’s gospel John the Baptist is described as, “a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! ‘ ” King David predicted he would be declared the Son of God (1,000 BC). Matthew’s gospel records many people witnessing Jesus’ baptism, and hearing a voice from heaven say, “This is my Son, whom I love…” …and that he would speak in parables. Matthew’s gospel records the disciples asking Jesus why he always speaks in parables. He would be sent to heal the broken-hearted. Luke’s gospel describes Jesus as being sent to ‘preach the gospel to the poor; to heal the broken-hearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind…’ Zechariah predicts he would enter Jerusalem triumphantly, on a donkey (520 BC). They brought the colt to Jesus for Him to ride on… they began to shout and sing, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.”

HIS TRIAL

HIS CRUCIFIXION

King David predicted that he would be rejected by his own people (1,000 BC). John’s gospel records that his people, even his own brothers, didn’t believe him. …He would be hated without cause. John’s gospel records Jesus lamenting people seeing his miracles and hating him anyway. …He would be betrayed by a friend. Matthew’s gospel records Judas betraying Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. …He would be falsely accused. Mark’s gospel records people bringing false accusations against Jesus so that he would be killed.

…He would be mocked and ridiculed. Luke’s gospel records the religious leaders and soldiers scoffing at Jesus and mocking him. …and he would be spat upon and struck. When Jesus was on trial, they began to spit in Jesus’ face and beat him with their fists. The prophet Isaiah predicted he would be silent before his accusers (735 BC). Pilate asked Jesus to answer the charges brought against him, but Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.

He would be called King. The Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, ordered a sign to be fastened above Jesus’ head. It read: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” …soldiers would gamble for his garments. Matthew’s gospel states that after they had nailed him to the cross, the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.. …and he would be given vinegar to drink. Matthew’s gospel records the Roman soldiers giving Jesus wine vinegar when he was on the cross. Isaiah predicted he would be killed along with criminals (735 BC). Two robbers were crucified with Jesus, one on the right and one on the left. King David predicted he would have his hands and feet pierced (1,000 BC). John’s gospel records Thomas needing to see the nail holes in his hands. …He would pray for his enemies. Luke’s gospel records Jesus saying, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” …and he would briefly be forsaken by God. Just before he died Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Moses predicted that the saviour’s bones would not be broken (1,400 BC). John’s gospel records that when they went to break Jesus’ legs he had already died so they didn’t need to. Zechariah predicts soldiers would pierce his side (520 BC). John states that a soldier pierced Jesus’ side with a spear to make sure he was dead.

HIS RESURRECTION & ASCENSION The prophet Isaiah predicted He would be buried in a rich mans tomb (735 BC). A rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud and laid it in his own new tomb. King David predicted that he would come back to life (1,000 BC). The gospels describe the disciples going to Jesus’ tomb after the Sabbath and finding it empty. Jesus appeared to the disciples several times afterwards. … and he would ascend to heaven. Luke’s gospel says that while Jesus was blessing the disciples, he left them and was taken up to heaven. * Dates are approximate

Over 300 prophecies were fulfilled in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus! More than a dozen different people made these predictions over many centuries. The odds of them all coming true are incredible, yet reliable eye witnesses confirm these events. God went to a great deal of effort to show you how special Jesus is. Why? Because whoever believes in Jesus will have eternal life! John 3:16
