GR EEN WAVE SUR F SCHOOL LEARN TO SURF

T

his is Green Wave’s second summer. Give us an update? how is it all going?

Well, we are actually just starting out our second summer now. It’s amazing how much support the Raglan community has shown us, so we’d like thank everyone for that. We love teaching and sharing something we are passionate about with our students. And we’ve had phenomenal feedback as well - we’ve already become the top-rated surf school in New Zealand. It’s nice to know that our students are having such a positive experience. Who’s involved with the instructing? Zennor Wernham, Ryan Bellerby and

Bing Lyons are the head instructors. We’re fortunate to have the most experienced staff in Raglan. We also have locals Wiremu Campbell and Charlie Banks are talented instructors and have been helping out. People always say how difficult it is to surf but what do you say to those who have never surfed and want to give it a go? Will they stand up? Everyone stands up on our lessons. We actually offer a stand-up guarantee or your money back, and so far we have a 100% success rate. We don’t really put any pressure on our students. Sometimes they might feel a little nervous before we start, but we keep everything fun

and relaxed. Before they know it, they’re already up and riding a wave. You offer daily lessons. Is it always at the same time? Our lesson schedule is based upon putting our students in the water during the best tides and conditions. This ensures that we surf at the safest time of the day and also during the easiest tide for beginners to learn. This makes a huge difference in the quality of a lesson. You can check the schedule on our website at www.greenwaveraglan.com; we update it fortnightly.

wetsuits available for hire. Lots of soft-top beginner-friendly boards but also some good intermediate boards as well. You can ring us at 021 0841 3481 to inquire about rentals. What can we expect from Green Wave this coming Summer? Lots of happy surfers. We’ve already seen a steady increase in our numbers. Our aim is to keep the quality of the lessons very high. We put a lot of energy into every lesson and it’s rewarding to see how excited our surfers get as their skills progress.

Do you offer rentals as well?

nly a stone’s throw away from the heart of the village stands the famous limestone coast, a very unique landscape well worth the exploration. What use to be Raglan’s best kept secret is now making headlines, attracting travellers from all over the world. So we caught up with Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard owner Stephen Reid to find out about the best way to get out on the water and discover the impressive coast for ourselves.. Q: Tell us, what’s so special about Raglan harbour’s limestone coast: The unique pancake like rock formations are approximately 30 million year old. It’s actually an ancient seabed, which has risen out of the ocean. Rain fall, tides and other environmental factors carved the rocks into very intricate and mystical shapes. It’s Mother Nature’s art piece! Q: What’s the best way to get there? If you are after a close encounter, then kayaking and paddleboarding are the best ways to get up close and personal with the coast. Around high tide, you can paddle right into the many nooks and crannies, where you can also enjoy surprising wild life! Q: Do we need experience to paddle to the pancake rocks? Not at all, we have many different options available, making it accessible to everyone. We offer lessons and guided excursions as well as freedom rentals.

8 | Raglan Summer Holiday Guide

Our 14 years of local experience makes it easy for us to help people select their best suited option. Q: Is this a family friendly activity? Yes, totally, I can’t think of a better way to spend quality time with family and friends, even dogs sometimes come along! Q: How would you describe the perfect day out: Pack a picnic and beach bag and plan for a half day outing. It’s nice to slow it down and take the time to explore the coast and absorb the good vibe. You can find a deserted beach to soak up the sunshine, swim, eat and enjoy some quality time in a stunning surrounding.

Q: How do we go about planning a trip? It’s easy. If you have a spontaneous urge then you can find our team operating right by the water’s edge at Bow Street jetty. For the ultimate experience simply call us to discuss your best paddling time and options. We love creating “good times” and are open every day of the summer! Better add this activity on your “Raglan bucket list” this summer! You can get in touch with Raglan Kayak & paddleboard directly: Cell: 0211860521 / Office: (07)825 8862 / www.RaglanKayak.co.nz

T

he SHG team caught up with artists Hayley hamilton and Karla Stevenson at their workshop gallery in the old Dairy Factory building atv58 Wallis St on route to the wharf. You are now settled into your new space on Wallis Street. How does it feel to be there? It has changed everything really. Having an open studio has meant we have a connection with the people buying our work, instead of only wholesaling to galleries. It has enabled us to have a permanent creative space to experiment with new ideas on a personal level as well as in our business. We feel very fortunate indeed. What have you been creating lately? Right now we are busy fulfilling Christmas orders for our galleries. We supply over 40 so it’s pretty intense. Our creativity is a continuous flow, one idea naturally leads to the next. With The Monster Company products the parameters are different to that of our own personal work. We have to think; Who are our customers? How can we reproduce this many times ? Can we wholesale this and make a profit? Whereas with our own work we have a freedom that cannot exist in a production workshop. A great balance in our working week is three days on the production line and two days going wherever our thoughts take us. And of course the obligatory 2pm podcast and Sushi Fridays.

You can always count on something new and novel at Monster - How do you keep things fresh? It’s not really consciously keeping things fresh. It is a workshop where we are talking, experimenting and trialling new ideas all the time. Creatively it is a little bit like being back at Uni. The fresh feel comes from us having no restraint in our personal work, yet remaining true to The Monster Company products. Your individual work compliments each other in the gallery. How do you differ in your creative approach? With two girls working together every day, we probably know each other on quite an unusual level. We are different in the way we process ideas, as everyone is, but have learnt what our strengths and diversities are and how to navigate around each other. Are you online? We have an online presence through our Facebook, Instagram and Etsy. h t t p s : // w w w . f a c e b o o k . c o m / themonsterco Who is your artist crush? Oooooo that’s such a big question. For Hayley it would be a mash up of Henri Rousseau, Henry Moore and Sandro Botticelli. Very recently she found this guy called Dustin Yellin through a TED talk –incredible stuff.. For Karla – it’s simple only one artist crush – or actually drop the artists bit just crush – Dave Grohl.

rom carved surfboards and sculpture, to fine arts photography and hand dyed silk fashion, the work of Raglan’s artists spans a wide range of media. And art lovers can immerse themselves in the full spectrum of their work at the ninth annual Raglan Arts Weekend, taking place from Saturday 27 January to Monday 29 January 2018. With over 30 artists exhibiting from both their home studios and the Raglan Old School Arts Centre, arts facilitator Jacqueline Anderson says the weekend offers a unique opportunity to connect to the process, not just the product. “It’s up close and personal. You get the opportunity to speak to the artists, breathe in the atmosphere, and maybe even see work being made. It’s also an adventure to follow the map and wander around Raglan unearthing all this delightful work.” This year, visitors have a variety of ways to wander. If you fancy using pedal-power to cruise between studios, Raglan Cyclery will have bikes

available for hire, while those seeking a less strenuous arts experience can join one of two bus tours run by Raglan Shuttle. The Arts on the Coast Tour takes place on Saturday 27 January, while the Arts in the Country Tour will introduce visitors to rural-based artists on Sunday 28 January. Both tours start from the Raglan Old School at 9:30am, and can include a healthy, plant-based lunch. Artists throwing open their doors for the Anniversary Weekend event include painter and sculptor Amanda Watson, panel and paint artist Chris Meek, and Miranda Jane Caird, who works with acrylic on canvas. At the Old School, you’ll find digital painting and photography by Ailene Cuthbertson, glass artist Marise Rarere, and charcoal drawings on paper by Dominique Marriott. The Old School is also where you’ll find the Arts Weekend Exhibition and 300 x 300 Show. Featuring a one-off, 300 x 300 mm piece of artwork alongside a showcase piece, the Exhibition provides

an enticing introduction to each artist participating in Raglan Arts Weekend. It’s open daily from Friday 8 December until Monday 29 January (excluding public holidays), between 10am and 3pm. Over the Anniversary Weekend, the Artists’ Open Studios will be open for viewing on Saturday 27 January, Sunday 28 January, and Monday 29 January, from 10am to 3pm, with a select few open until 5pm. For full details of each artist participating, and directions to their studios, pick up a copy of the official Raglan Arts Trail Guide, available from the Raglan i-SITE on Wainui Road, the Old School Arts Centre, and various Raglan cafes and galleries. You can also learn more about each artist at: facebook. com/raglanart. If you’d like to arrange bike hire over Anniversary Weekend, visit leapbooking.com/ business/cyclery-raglan. part of me always wanted to be an artist, but I was sensible and chose a very grounded profession. Much to my surprise, I stayed in healthcare for more than 20 years. It took an earthquake with all it’s consequences to initiate change. About time. And so, four years ago, I took my paintbrush and my spatula and started painting. In my art, I am self-taught. My paintings are largely unplanned. Images evolve as emotional reflections of my subject. Painting for me is about the process; You will find recurring these such as beach, sea and harbor. Semi abstract seascapes. Memories of life in a big city with a busy port are another subject of mine. Abstract city views. In exploring intuitive spontaneous gestural movements, a series of day dreams is continuously evolving. Dreamy abstracts. Acrylics allow me to be spontaneous, as there is an immediate directness about them.

When I stretch the limits of the paints, they surprise me. My process usually starts with a vague idea based on a photo, feeling, conversation or memory. There are no sketches. I jump right into the painting. And try not to think in the beginning. I act. One layer in the painting informs the next. I react. Sprays of water lead to paint dripping. Gravity adds an element of coincidence and challenges me. My intuition guides me through the process, and I just follow. Paintings are finished when there is nothing more to add and the balance feels right. Much admiration goes to Bauhaus artists Lyonel Feininger and Paul Klee. Prints of their work could be found in the family home. The artists of my childhood. Today, my admiration goes to Gerard Richter; I absolutely love his work. Or Gretchen Albrecht’s luminous colour field paintings. And Sally Gabori’s colourful abstracts. Always inspiring. Phone 0221776378 for a studio visit. www.claudiagrutke.com

hris Meek is a bit of a household name in Raglan and probably in some parts around NZ and the world. Toiling away in his workshop with his welding tools his works are a unique and refreshing take on recycled art. Opening up one of their sheds as a unique exhibition space Studeo, the Studeobaker sitting at the entrance greeted us into his and wife Shelley’s wonderland of steel and scraps. Delving into the world of art and junk, it has a surprisingly long history. Back in 1913 Marcel Duchamp changed the art world forever with his idea of ‘Ready-mades’. Duchamp picked objects from the world he wanted to exhibit as art rather than create the pieces himself. His most famous Readymade, an upside down, everyday urinal signed simply, ‘R. Mutt.’ But I have to say, my favorite junk-as-art piece has got to be Pablo Picasso’s Bull’s Head (1942). In one fell swoop Picasso out Duchamp’ed Duchamp in his clever sculpture made only out of a bicycle seat and handle bars. Whimsical and deadly simple in it’s sophistication, the beauty lies in the fact that the piece is instantly recognizable as being both bike part and bull’s head. It’s the small juxtapositions that make a piece of art special and there’s a similar feel of whimsy, wit and simplicity to the works created by Chris and Shelley Meek. Driving up to their workshop, there’s a dangerous looking assortment of wheel spokes, car panels and machinery. Being a hoarder myself I can see myself getting lost for hours sifting through the piles of interesting-looking junk. From afar, the scraps of metal could be easily written off as rubbish. But seeing the final creations and the way the pair talk about their work, it’s obvious that each little bit of metal has its own distinct appeal and story.

10 | Raglan Summer Holiday Guide

“It was all a mistake really,” jokes Chris who had originally set out to become a panel beater. Quitting his job the day he got his apprenticeship, it was a table he made for Shelley’s friend that sparked his foray into a creative career. Soon after he was getting calls from art dealers and magazines wanting to see what kind of collections he had. He had none. What he did have were things he had made for friends, a whole bunch of power tools and a taste for quirky ingenuity. We have a Chris Meek piece hanging in our wall at work. It has a giant ‘C’ welded onto it. When he takes me out to his back room I recognise similar looking giant letters and I soon find out that all the letters were once a part of a giant Pascoes Jewellers sign. “I remember seeing this big thing poking out at the yard,” “I scraped off all the moss and mold and I was like ‘oh my god it’s the big Pascoes sign!’ I always remember seeing it when I was in Hamilton.” From giant neon signs to simple car registration plates, lot of Chris’ work is marked by letters and words. Sometimes abstract, sometimes literal. “I used to be the forger at school,” he confesses. “Words mean so much to me. They can be so abstract and clear at the same time.” Which is interesting considering he’s also notorious for spelling mistake. “I guess I’m a bit dyslexic. I’m also drawn more to the way the word sounds so I play around with that.” Despite his humble surroundings, Chris Meek is quite the sought after artist. In a world where everything can be Googled, he has, amazingly, stayed pretty underground. With an aversion to technology himself, he only just set up his website this year. Somewhat begrudgingly as well.

“I don’t have a cell phone. So if you want to find me you have to catch me here or somewhere about,” he admits proudly. Taking a look through Shelley’s work is a different take on recycled art. Leaning towards the more sculptural and functional side, she points out that she’s drawn to the rounder objects. Like the polished steel stove rings littered throughout her works. “I think I might be drawn to kitchen stuff as well but it’s more anti-housework. I’d rather use it to create something than clean it.” “Sometimes Chris and I fight over pieces,” says Shelley as she shows me the main scrap yard. Regulars at the local dump and scrap metal places, their workshop is filled with years and year’s worth of collecting. Making her own work after she started helping Chris around 12 years ago, she’s exhibited alongside him a few times as well. Chris and Shelley’s Studeo Gallery is a special exhibition space.

“I guess it feels like a lot of the options for exhibiting your work are quite mainstream. I want to create a different experience where there is honest, real freedom. And I think what draws people to Raglan is the soul of the place so I want to keep it real, soulful and experimental,” sys Chris. It’s hard to get away from the pair as they talk about their various works on the go and interesting anecdotes from past exhibitions. I leave with some sage advice though, that really, anything goes, when it comes to art. Make sure you catch their summer exhibition: Ballet with the Valet Contemporary art by Chris Meek 20th jan - 29th jan 2018 opening Sat 20th jan 12pm - 5pm 21 Cross St Raglan www.chrismeek.co.nz

R ICK YOU M A NS PA I N T E R

I

have harboured a passion for creating things ever since I was young, whether it’s art, architecture or design.

Painting is a particular interest of mine – I’ve always been inspired by Turner’s way with painting the light, and by Montague Dawson’s stunning seascapes, which has led me to explore the excitement, colour, drama, serenity and seductiveness of the sea in my art. As an artist, I was fortunate enough to win several prizes at college and design school, which then presented me with the option of furthering my studies overseas as a painter. However, as I had a young family to support, I chose instead to pursue a career in design. My paintings chase and reflect the indefinable mystique of Mother Nature, from the tender power of the human body to the space, grace and drama of rock, sea and sky.

Languid lines, bold shadows and delicate, fleeting light reveal images that are both imaginary and intimately familiar, inspired by my surroundings and life experiences. I endeavour to express the very essence of what inspires me, while evoking personal interpretation, escape and meaning. The waves of Raglan have inspired me to paint many waves and sea scapes around Raglan recently. Feel free to communicate any thoughts on the paintings or commissions that you are interested in. ROCK-IT K ITCHEN R E S TA U R A N T & C A F E I hear you have an exciting new chef on board at Rockit? Yes, we certainly do. Rafael Zanoni comes from Macau restaurant in Tauranga. He is inspired by Asian fusion so we are changing up our menu utilising his expertise and introducing some fresh summer dishes with lots of Asian influence. We have a great crew in the kitchen with Phil Sadler and Kevin Martin also joining our team.. What can we expect for the summer at Rockit? What we always offer...relaxed summer dining in a rustic chic country venue with loads of space. Quality fresh food, boutique wine list and Hallertau + 3 Fat Pigs beer on tap. Your outdoor area is wonderful for summer lounging. Sure is ....its a great space for family and friends to spread themselves out and even bring the dog. Kids can run around while parents relax and enjoy the vista. The lovely Green Room has now been up and running for a year now. How is it going. How do people tend to use it? The Green room has been a hit for our customers. It allows big groups to celebrate special occasions and business groups to have private meetings. It has a sense of privacy but still opens up to the main deck with a gorgeous view to the outdoors. You also exhibit local artists. Does the history of the building encourage you to keep this as part of the Rockit scene?

Absolutely. We love exhibiting local artists given that it was the actual studio of local artist Ken Thomas with paint splattered walls for proof. Right now we have a photographic exhibition by the amazing Geb Burns who captures with simplicity the beauty of our local landscape. Do you have any famous Rockit parties coming up? Oh yes we do. Another awesome New Years celebration is planned. We have a great line up of DJ’s including four from Wellington who are very excited to be reunited together on the decks after some time. This will be a treat so dust of the dancing shoes. Evening dining and tunes will be from 5.30pm and the party kicks off at 9pm till 1 am. Limited tickets available from Rock-it Kitchen on sale from the 27th December. $40 pp includes a shuttle ride home to Raglan or Whale bay. Don’t miss out as there will be no door sales on the night. 248 Wainui Rd On the way to 248 Wainui Rdthe beach On the way to the beach

WA LLIS BISTRO A MODERN, KIWI DINING EXPERIENCE

Justin and Alix are familiar with the café scene in Raglan owning the busy corner café The Shack, the former chefs will focus on lunch and dinner at Wallis Bistro. “The feedback we were getting from a lot of people was that Raglan needed more night time dining venues,” Justin says. Influenced by Spanish and Italian cuisines, Justin says the menu reflects those flavour profiles and takes inspiration from the awesome tastes unique to Aotearoa. “You can’t grow up in the Pacific and not be influenced.” Wallis Bistro is open from Thursday to Sunday, featuring a savoury menu that will change and evolve with the seasons. Their small team works hard to provide locally sourced produce, fish and meats. The Wallis Bistro chef Tom Lusty is passionate about creating daily specials full of freshness and flavour. On Saturdays and Sundays, wake your taste buds up with their brunch specials, including crepes with cinnamon sugar or smoked salmon and potato rosti. There’s also the classic fried eggs and ham on offer as well. To top things off, their drink menu covers everything from coffee and tea to beer, cider, wine, customised cocktails and a selection of premium non-alcoholic cocktails, including the Wallis Cup, with ginger ale, mint, lemon, bitters and cucumber. It’s sure to become a summertime favourite.

W

allis Bistro is the newest dining place on the block, offering diners a full-flavoured, modern Kiwi dining

experience. Taking over The Local Eatery on Wallis Street, owners Justin and Alix Thompson spent the

end of winter renovating the space to create a cosy, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, and making the most of the sheltered garden space out the back for al fresco dining in the coming summer months.

Find the Wallis Bistro at 6 Wallis Street, tuck into a cosy corner inside or on their perfectly placed patio and dine the summer away. Tractors got bogged deep in mud as plants struggled in the deluge. Potato, kumara and broccoli prices increased and storage was poor due to persistent humidity. NEW SUR FERS CODE SIGNS TA K E SH A PE K N OW B E F O R E YO U G O

S

ome time ago, there used to be Surfers Code signs at the Whaingaroa points. But over the years the signs faded and eventually they were removed. But with visitor numbers rapidly growing, and many of those visitors here to try their hand out in the surf, surf safety has come back into the spotlight. In the spirit of sharing in the enjoyment of surfing and of Manaakitanga (ensuring everyone’s safety and nourishment) and Kaitiakitanga (maintaining a healthy environment and local culture), the Whaingroa Raglan Surf Management Plan was born in the waves that wrap around the sacred Mount Karioi to promote a safer, happier surfing environment for all. The first project on their list is to get 6 new modern, attractive and stylish Surfers Code signs installed for surfers at Ngarunui Beach, Manu Bay and Whale Bay.

Whether you are a sea-salted veteran or a fresh starting grommet, there is no denying the excitement and adrenaline rush you feel when you get to your feet for the first time. But before you get out into our west coast waters there are a few things you should know to make sure you stay as safe as possible. In order to make these signs a reality, the Whaingaroa Raglan Surf Management Plan needs the support of the wider community. With a price tag of $12,000, the signs do not come cheap, but they could essentially pass on information that could save a life. If you are interested in supporting the group in getting these signs up or have any feedback about the signs in general contact Stephen Freeman, surfsafe@windowslive. com.

man with a very interesting background, Tony T has a shop on the main Raglan strip, the SHG team sat down for a chat about Bohemian Gypsy.

When did Bohemian Gypsy start? How did it come about? October 2016. Thought Raglan needed something to represent the other side of its surf culture. What’s the general vibe of the store? For the free-spirited, with a touch of style, incorporating local arts and crafts and other design from fashion, jewellery, ceramics and more . What is your background before retail Tony? I was in the music business for many years managing bands. I had a club and bar in Auckland, Galatos, restaurant in Hawkes Bay, a fashion label, a music label, photograph studio and music publishing company in London.

What other projects have you been involved in while in Raglan? The T House is a place for locals and travellers to hang out and be entertained with cinema, music and food. Three Little Birds - local arts and craft, Raglan Artisan Workshop at the Wharf Studios and Indoor Market TUTU Retro Shop. What can we expect to find at Bohemian Gypsy over Summer? Beautiful clothes, amazing jewellery, stunning ceramics and great arts and arafts. What does summer mean to you? Any cool plans? Summer is when the village come alive and shines and business owners have a smile, yes some plans but can’t tell you yet.

ATA M IR A & THE COR NERSTOR E FRESH & ECLECTIC BOUTIQUE

J

acqui from the SHG caught up with Nadine, owner of Atamira, the fresh and eclectic clothing and lifestyle store. What's news at Atamira? We are celebrating 10 years open! An awesome feeling to have that stability and still be here to see it evolve into such a vibrant town. Every day customers comment on loving our store which is heartwarming to know we are 10 and still fresh and relevant not just in NZ but globally. Nice to know we are here to stay, and add value in some small ways to both Raglan and NZ landscape. You have a beautiful space on the corner. How have things changed over the years? When we opened we were out by ourselves on that end of the street (with the alcohol store) and winters were very challenging. Now you could nearly say Wainui Rd and our end has plenty of inspired vibe and activity. Our customers are loyal and regular, from those that pop in every week, to every month to every summer …I love the diversity and familiarity at the same time. Raglan has grown a lot since we opened, and is a very popular destination which is great, but I hope it doesn’t change too much more as it seems to be reaching a critical point.

What can we expect to find in store this summer? We mix stable favourites with fresh new finds from overseas that are not everywhere else. Great denim, amazing colours and prints, summer dresses, special occasion wear, linen shirting, beautiful jewellery, timeless style that also has attitude. We don’t want to be the same, we aim to keep it fresh and mix it up - classics that can be worn two ways. Who do you cater for? Nearly everyone or we try to, women & men, all ages. Atamira & Corner Store Raglan are a complimentary retail mix that is curated with care through clothing, intelligent books, gift ideas, cards at range of price points. The only rules we have are keeping it authentic and mixing up style - great style, as well as being more conscious consumers. Something for everyone, fresh and eclectic - we try to help customers find great style and ideas. Are you online? YES - our customers can stay with us and in touch from where ever they are, or see what we have before driving out to Raglan. Online and social media is growing for us, I think our instagram is pretty cool and does a great job to grow our brand and ethos - check it out :)

TONIC H A IR DR ESSING PRECISION CUTTING & COLOURING How old is Tonic Rachel? I moved to Raglan 13 years ago and started up Tonic on Wainui Road where the laundromat is now. It was a sleepy little village back then and i wasn’t sure if it was going to work in the beginning but I’m still here and pretty stoked with how things are going. What were you doing prior to starting up Tonic? Where did you work? Prior to moving to Raglan I had been living abroad for about 6 years in London, Vancouver and Sydney. I managed to bluff my way into working in some world renowned salons and was lucky enough to receive incredible training from some of the best world class hairdressing guru’s. What do you love about your set up at Tonic? I love the space I work in. Its so light and airy and gets heaps of all day sun but best of all its nice and private. We built the salon 10 years ago after moving out of the Wainui Road space. Where are you located? We are located at 8 Bankart Street opposite the 4 Square and next to the bike shop. You have such a great crew at Tonic. Who are they? What is the secret to working so well together? Yes indeed I have an incredible team of talented stylists. All the girls are highly skilled and been in the hair industry for many years. Annick trained in Montreal and joined me 7 years ago. She is not only creative with hair but also does taxidermy in her spare time.

Eva is originally from California and has worked with me for almost 6 years. Eva also teachers yoga at the loft and loves to surf. Kate joined us 2 years ago after having her own successful business in Hamilton for 8 years. We all get on really well! Everyone is more than happy to help each other out and cover extra shifts during the winter months as we all like to travel. Do you do weddings? Yes we do weddings. Its always a lot of fun having groups of woman come in and taking over the salon to be made up to look beautiful for a special day. There’s usually bubbles and lots of giggles involved. Do you do guys? Yes we do guys haha Do you do drop ins? It is best to make an appointment as we tend to get fairly busy. What product ranges do you use? We have a stunning range of products by Davines, O&M, Moroccan oil and Evo. Most of our products are paraben and sulvate free. What is Tonic offering this summer? We can offer you great sexy hair! What I love most about our clients in Raglan is that they have their own unique style and don’t feel the need to follow trends. All of our stylists are laid back easy going and unpretentious. We will actually listen to what are clients want. We are also very happy to recommend and give our advice for a new look and make over to make you feel and look a million bucks . .

With its black sand beaches, dramatic surf breaks, sparkling sunsets and awe-inspiring ocean views, Raglan is a popular wedding destination among both New Zealand and overseas couples. The town is also a stunning setting for engagement celebrations, hen parties, stag dos and honeymoons. A few years ago, designer Shari Amos realised there was no easy way to piece together the best vendors in the area. She decided to create Hitched in Raglan – a beautiful, modern online collection of top-notch local wedding service providers. The site also features stories of real Raglan weddings and advice for planning your special day.

Whether you’re newly engaged or already planning your Raglan wedding, take the next step towards your happily-ever-after at hitchedinraglan.co.nz. And if you’re a local wedding vendor or a Raglan bride wanting to showcase your celebration, find out how to get featured on Hitched in Raglan by emailing ido@hitchedinraglan.co.nz.

our community waste minimisation. I got to see first hand the processes that take our food waste from our homes to turn it into a precious resource to replenish our soil and help grow kai all in the space of three months! It is also great to see many of our local businesses take up the plastic bag free challenge and make the commitment to support our environment. Well done to the efforts of the Plastic Bag Free Raglan crew, the sewing people of Bag It Raglan and the certified PBfR businesses.

ena tatou katoa,

Greetings and salutations! 2017 has certainly been a busy year and with the sun shining, fish biting and the festive season upon us. Our little seaside community will soon be humming with the many visitors who love to share our slice of paradise. Writing of paradise, I recently attended the very first Waikato District Council citizenship ceremony to be held at Turangawaewae marae. It was a very special experience which welcomed a number of Raglanites to become New Zealand citizens. A particularly memorable swearing in oath came from one long term resident who described Raglan as “Paradise, Raglan/Whaingaroa, West Coast, Aotearoa/New Zealand”. It is great to see the buzz of activity taking place at our skatepark with the addition of ‘Te Raenga o Rokikore’, our new pump track. It is turning into a destination for locals and visitors alike and I can vouch firsthand of its popularity - my 14 year old son and friends love it. It is inspiring to see some of the incredible local talent we have, both young and young at heart, using that space. I attended the official blessing of the new Greenwaste area and Hot Composting Unit at Xtreme Zero Waste, what an incredible addition to

The Community Board and I have been working to encourage more of our young people to participate in decision making. I recently took three year 11 Raglan Area School students to Council to attend a youth leaders’ thank you Christmas lunch. They came away inspired and energised by the examples of youth in action in other communities. I am really looking forward to working with our rangatahi in 2018 and beyond - let’s collectively encourage and celebrate the potential of our youth - they are the future. Council’s District Plan Review has been three years in the drafting and is coming to its closing stages. Consent and planning staff have recently come out to Raglan to discuss the proposed changes and to get your views and feedback on the District Plan. Thanks very much to everyone who has contributed in this process. Check out the proposed plan at waikatodistrict. govt.nz/districtplanreview. This is also where you can give feedback.

t’s certainly been an exciting year for the Rangitahi project, with more than 80 section sales confirmed and just 1 remaining up for grabs in the first stage. We’ve been blown away by the response so far and it’s awesome to see such positivity about the development plans for the peninsula. We anticipate it won’t be long before all sections are sold. The vibe amongst those who have secured their piece of paradise on Rangitahi is infectious. The Rangitahi community looks set to be a diverse and vibrant one, with people from various walks of life set to call the peninsula home. Get ready for a vibrant new energy and plenty of opportunities! Keep up-to-date with the bridge progress via the livefeed on our website, or take a

paddle around the peninsula this summer! If you do get out on the water please be aware that the council have temporarily closed the waterway surrounding the new bridge. We would appreciate if you would keep out of this zone (100 metres either side of the new bridge). Make sure friends, family and especially children are aware of this for their own safety. We are working on releasing the next stage of the development early 2018. Register your interest online and you will be the first to know when the latest sections are on the market. The Rangitahi team are now based in the Raglan town centre. To find out more information about the peninsula visit Sam and Sophie at 9 Bow Street, next to the Library. Feel like an adventure this summer? Make a booking at www.rangitahi.co.nz

he latest attraction for thrill-seekers in Raglan is already proving popular for all those keen for a bit of fun on wheels.

The project is funded by the Kopua Camp Board, and Raglan Ward Councillor Lisa Thomson sees the track as an exciting addition to Raglan’s many must-do activities.

If you’re planning to camp in Raglan, it’s important to be aware of the Waikato District Council Freedom Camping Bylaw 2016. The bylaw allows freedom camping in a self-contained vehicle except in areas that are listed as prohibited or restricted. The following areas are prohibited in Raglan:

“It’s in the perfect spot, right next to Council’s skate park and playground, which are probably the most used areas for families, our youth and visitors,” she says. The reaction on social media

has

also

been

extremely positive.

When track builders Empire of Dirt posted an update on the project, hundreds of comments came in from around the country including: “Another reason to go to Raglan” and, “Now that’s an epic pump track”. You can get to the track

t has been quite a busy year for the Raglan Chamber of Commerce. With a changing of the ‘guard’ in April this year, the Chamber Board farewelled Dave Currie and Geoff Kelly as Chair and co-Chair, and welcomed to the helm, Hayley Willers and Morgan Morris, who share the respective position of Chairperson. The Chamber has been working to provide insightful, informative speakers and networking opportunities for members, while the new co-Chairs are setting out to strengthen membership engagement in the new year. In May of this year, the Chamber Board began to encourage an assist businesses in applying for the 2017 Waipa Business Awards and in doing so joined with the Cambridge and Te Awamutu Chambers of Commerce in participating in the Waipa Business Awards in 2015. “The awards have become a great way for our local businesses to showcase their accomplishments,” said coChair Morgan Morris. “We’re known to keep our heads down and carry on with business as usual out here, so the awards give businesses the chance to step outside of their box and take time to appreciate all of the hard work they’ve put in.” Raglan saw a handful of local businesses step up to the plate this year, and final nominees from Raglan included: Raglan Rock, Raglan 4 Square, Raglan Buds Flower Farm, Xtreme Zero Waste and Raglan Shuttle. The big night was held at Mystery Creek Events Centre and three of the five nominees walked away with awards. Raglan Rock took the Best Customer Service Raglan award, Raglan Shuttle won Customer Choice Raglan and Xtreme Zero Waste took home two awards for the night, winning the Excellence in Large Business award as well as the award for Sustainability and Community Contribution.

Following a busy winter of meetings, awards and networking, the Chamber Board was making plans to send their Administrator, Karamea Puriri to Sydney for the 10th World Chambers Congress hosted by the International Chambers of Commerce, World Chambers Federation. One month before leaving for Sydney, the Chamber received an invitation to present the community project, Plastic Bag Free Raglan during the congress. The Chamber has been part of the Plastic Bag Free Raglan project since its inception in early 2016. “The Chamber board understands that the economic health and wellbeing of our businesses is influenced by the environmental health of our community,” said Karamea. In April of 2017 the Chamber assisted PBFR in implementing and launching the Business Accreditation Programme. The programme includes a Business Support Booklet and Accreditation Programme, which provides businesses with the knowledge and beginning steps to removing single-use plastic bags from their shops and make way for a more sustainable alternative. “Plastic Bag Free Raglan is unique in the sense that it is not a government issued change, it is a project ignited by groups who are at the forefront of our community

in various ways. But it is especially unique to see a Chamber of Commerce not just supporting, but playing an active role in the movement,” says Karamea. “The kaupapa of Plastic Bag Free Raglan is in line with the mission of the Raglan Chamber, which is to support, foster and advocate for vibrant and sustainable business in Whaingaroa Raglan,” Karamea stated. “That means sustainable business both economically and environmentally.” But it wasn’t until the invitation from the International Chamber that the they realised just how big of an impact their involvement in Plastic Bag Free Raglan had made. “They contacted us about Plastic Bag Free Raglan and asked us to share it as an example project during the Sustainability plenary at the Congress. The plenary focussed on ways in which the public and private sectors could collaborate for more meaningful, sustainable change.” Karamea travelled to Sydney with 60 other Chamber delegates from around New Zealand, and was the sole New Zealand delegate to present at the Congress, which was attended by 1,200 Chamber delegates from around the world.

Raglan Chamber of Commerce co-Chairs, Hayley Willers & Morgan Morris

“Raglan is one of the smallest Chambers in the world,” said Karamea of the big day. “But the presentation was so well received, it was a very unique opportunity to not only highlight Plastic Bag Free Raglan, but the other amazing work that is going on in our little community. While we aren’t large in size or numbers, our impact as a community positive and meaningful, and that’s what matters.” In October the Chamber welcomed on New Zealand Fieldays Society Inc. as a Growth Partner of the Chamber. As part of their sponsorship of the Waipa Business Awards, New Zealand Fieldays felt it necessary to be more of a supporter of the Chambers year round. They join Bizworx Accounting Ltd. who has been the Keystone Partner of the Raglan Chamber since 2015. The Raglan Chamber is looking forward to another busy and adventurous year of growth and networking opportunities. If you would like to find out more about the Raglan Chamber, the benefits of becoming a member and the many projects they are working on, please get in touch. he Whaingaroa Raglan community is passionate about our natural environment. Taking responsibility for the health of this beautiful place is integral to ‘the way we do things here’. Plastic Bag Free Raglan (PBFR) is an example of how a community can successfully work together to implement solutions at a local level. The Whaingaroa Environment Centre, Xtreme Zero Waste, the Raglan Chamber of Commerce and Para Kore have been collaboratively leading the way to create awareness of and solutions for the mindless use of single use plastics which has pervaded society to the long term detriment of the natural world and community health.

The outcome so far: over 80% of local businesses do not supply plastic carry bags; and it is a common sight to see people shopping with their own reusable bags. Interest in what we are doing here in Whaingaroa is spreading throughout Aotearoa. Our message to all our visitors this summer: Please respect the work the local community is doing to protect our environment.

• Take your rubbish with you when you leave the beaches, parks, and open spaces • Take a reusable shopping bag with you when going to the shops - or purchase one of the many reusable bags on sale in our shops

PBFR has implemented a variety of actions to enable the change away from single use plastic, starting with single use plastic carry bags.

• Say “no thanks” if offered a plastic carry bag while in Whaingaroa Raglan; ask for a compostable one instead

• Provision of strong re-usable jute bags still for sale in some local shops • ‘Plastic Free Kids’ - education for schools; now available throughout the District • Bag It Raglan - awesome volunteer community group sewing cloth bags • Ongoing messages to community and visitors - Bring your Reusable bag • Introduction of compostable carry bags, for when people forget their bag • Business accreditation program - where local businesses commit to removing plastic carry bags, so plastic bags do not end up on our streets, bush and waterways.

- keep our sea plastic free -

We encourage you to:

We are not waiting for government led solutions - we are encouraging and empowering local businesses and people to make the changes needed to protect Papatuanuku.

Solutions include:

Remember your reusable bag

• Shop at PBFR accredited businesses many are absorbing the cost of providing alternatives to plastic, and please be OK with those that need to charge for a compostable bag. • By taking these small actions, rest assured you are doing your bit to help us protect our beautiful natural environment for all to enjoy; now and for years to come. ove visiting Raglan? Love being outdoors and in our natural environment? Love cute and fluffy? Now everyone has an opportunity to help out their favourite holiday destination restore its biodiversity by sponsoring an oi chick or a new predator trap. The Karioi Maunga ki te Moana (mountain to the sea) project encourages people to take positive environmental action to protect the last remnant population of threatened grey-faced petrel (oi) on the mountain’s coastline. For local volunteers, the project involves hard physical work, checking and clearing over 800 traps on the mountain every month, and protecting oi nests even more intensively for nine months of the year.

sponsorship options to help build on the work that is being done. Karioi sponsorship packs start from $10 and range up to $10,000, and can be tailored to suit individuals and businesses. This year, the survival of oi chicks – which are incredibly cute and fluffy – was increased by 65 per cent, thanks to the project doing extra predator control around nesting sites. This year was the first year that chicks were found and recorded on the maunga in nearly 10 years, taking the project a step closer to its dream of restoring seabirds to Karioi. The chicks fledge in December, and then take off to spend up to seven years at sea before returning to where they were hatched to find a mate for life.

The Karioi Project thrives because of the dedication of many passionate volunteers and the support of local businesses, a range of trust funders, the Department of Conservation and the Waikato Regional Council, but we need all the help we can get, financially, to restore our biodiversity.

Oi is one of the few petrel species to still breed on the mainland. Almost all petrel species now only breed on offshore islands, where they are safe from predation by introduced rats, cats, stoats, ferrets and pigs. The large scale predator control done by volunteers in Raglan not only protects oi but all our forest birds.

Visitors, too, who love Raglan and appreciate the work by locals, can help out with donations, and the Karioi Maunga project has a range of

steopathy is a total system of healthcare that emphasises the role of the musculoskeletal system in health and disease. We are holistic practitioners with our own unique philosophy, concepts and principles. We recognise that all the organs and systems of the body are interconnected, we cannot treat one part without influencing and changing the whole system. We look for the primary cause of a dysfunction within a person be it medical, emotional, traumatic or biochemical. The human body has an amazing capacity for self-repair and correction. Under normal circumstances it is able to cope with most forms of illness, ongoing stress, accidents, infections, emotional trauma and just life! Unfortunately a large majority of people are not in full health and are carrying around an accumulation of the effects of different events from their lives. From this, various symptoms can gradually build up over a period of weeks, months or years. The compensation patterns start to run out whilst people continue to ignore their gradually declining health. Common complaints of headaches, joint aches, insomnia, digestive issues, decreased energy and fatigue become their normal eventually an acute strain, illness, trauma or just deciding “they have had enough” forces them to seek help - this is a great time to consult an Osteopathic practitioner but before this point would be even better! We are often part of a team helping a patient to be well - e.g. counselling, acupuncture, massage, homeopathy, herbal remedies, life coach, exercise, eating habits and general rehabilitation. Osteopaths have a huge bag of tools. I prefer working as a Cranial Osteopath. This is a more gentle approach - it is not just working with the cranium (head) - I take different hand holds around the body, listening and assisting the patient to gently de-stress, reintegrate,

articulate, unravel, unwind and rebalance. I help to fine tune and discern normal from abnormal and facilitate the patient to find their well being and health. Cranial Osteopathy listens to rhythmic impulses and feels the tides, motion, circulation, inhalation and exhalation of our fluid dynamics. It works with the breathing and movement of the musculoskeletal system, the bones, ligaments, fascia and the organs whilst watching the shape and organisation of our anatomy within its body framework. This acknowledges a force of life, natural laws and interfaces with our anatomy, physiology, embryology and the formation of who we

are. Its a bit like treating with a different ‘attention’ its not intellectual or intuitive, its being present to the health in the patient and the story as it unfolds into its own answer. The symptoms don’t all disappear initially but patients often report “they feel more themselves, feel different, have more energy” and this helps on their path to wellness. A series of treatments is normally expected as it can take time for the body to heal. I help to create space in the body and to find the health, to restore balance, to find ease and to reduce pain patterns physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is my aim for people to feel more fabulous!

The sessions, which have been running for seven years and are growing strong, have become an iconic event that is well recognised both nationally and internationally. Thanks to great hosts and an amazing vibe, the momentum will keep growing! As always the season started off with a bang and artists are lining up to showcase yet another notorious summer of music, with a little something to please everyone. Stephen Reid, aka Jamin-I, Sunday Session’s founder and host aim to keep up the positivity and keep on attracting top quality acts for the people of Raglan. “I just love music and love being able to bring renowned artists to come and play for us all. Without the sessions, a lot of them would usually be impossible to get to perform in such a small village. What tops it off for me is the positive vibe in the yeard. It’s rare to see people of all ages, nationalities and walks of life celebrating together, big smiles week in - week out! It’s special!”

A collaboration between producer Barnaby Matthews and vocalist Conor McCabe, Fortunes. began 2015 with the release of their debut “Hoodie” EP and went on to support the likes of JMSN and Shlomho, and Oddisee, gaining a reputation for their engaging and energetic live show along the way. Since then the electronic/R&B duo have been busy. After opening 2016 with a spot at Let Them Eat Cake, the release of their followup EP “Jacket” followed close behind. With the single “Energy” on Triple J rotation, the duo went on to play sold-out

headline shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, support international acts Lapsley and Kilo Kish, as well as land slots at Splendour in The Grass, Paradise, Strawberry Fields, and 2017’s Laneway NZ festivals. Fortunes. latest offering “501’s” is a daydreamy, sunset jam with syrupy synths, lazy grooves, and stacks of vocal harmonies that builds on a sound uniquely their own. Soundsplash will be the first gig in his hometown for Connor who grew up locally in Raglan.

Aspiring Australian based duo Flowidus burst onto the scene and the Ram Records landscape in 2016, with their debut Program release, the From The Storm EP, which exhibited their smooth production, variety and evolving style. Now, the budding production partnership made up of Spillage and Dealt Fairly are back for an even an even bigger 2017. Already having tracks featured on the Ram Records compilation series and having supported DC Breaks on the Australian leg of their worldwide Different Breed tour, Flowidus are now set to unleash their

sophomore release on Program, in the form of No Matter / Zulu. One half of Flowidus, Raphael Henderson, is another local who will be returning to his hometown to perform at Soundsplash. Raphael attributes his successes to having a mind wealthy in culture, perseverance and dedication, as well as a pronounced passion for drum & bass. These traits have assisted him in the studio, resulting in a slew of fresh music releases and videos to match. Although living in Perth now, Raphael has enjoyed working with people from back home, and even featured on Tali’s latest album “Wolves”, remixing her single “Faster Than Sound”.
