R

aglan Creative Market celebrates 15 years in 2020 of bringing local artisans together in a fabulous one-stop shopping experience.

and knitted creations. Plus, many others holders who have been coming to the market as regular artisan stallholders for over 10 years.

It started life in 2005 as the Whaingaroa Creative Market, founded by two local women Nadine Meddings-Malone and Kim Garside, who saw the need for a showcase of local talent and enterprise.

The market has also been an incubator for local social entrepreneurship with some stallholders setting up shops in Raglan as well as getting their products into other shops in Raglan and elsewhere.

Current market co-ordinator Deb King says it started small with a core volunteer base of stallholders who organised the monthly Sunday market at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. “They had already been attending other markets in the Waikato and Auckland and were keen to have a Raglan version.” The Raglan Community Arts Council took over managing the market in 2007 to further promote the arts and increase visitor numbers in Raglan. Raglan Old School Arts Centre manager Jacqueline Anderson was employed as the market coordinator in 2009. After the completion of the new St Lazarus building with commercial kitchen in 2010, the additional kitchen foodie space ws utilised for the market. “The market continued to grow in strength and numbers, additional summer markets and themed markets also started,” Jacqueline says. Running rain, hail or shine, Jacqueline says the stallholders are the stars of the market. “They are some of the hardest workers around, battling all kinds of weather from torrential rain, wind and hanging onto gazebos for dear life.” Some of the long-term stallholders include Monika De La Cruz and Yannis Petzold from Ocean Inlays, Liz Stanway and Rick Thorpe from Taunga Kereru and Pat Alderson with her beautiful handmade sewing

At its peak the market now has around 70 stallholders who come from around the country and set up shop alongside the local entrepreneurs. “In the scheme of things, it’s actually a small market but its rich in so many other ways and it has such a big heart,” Deb says. Raglan Creative Market is not only known for providing an eclectic shopping experience but it is renowned for its great vibe and all-round friendliness – not only for the shoppers but amongst the stallholders themselves. “We always get comments about the genuine sense of community here, and the openness and collaboration that happens at the Raglan market,” Deb says. “The stall holders are the pulse of the market and have shaped what the market is today - a vibrant, welcoming and inviting community event for all families, locals and visitors to enjoy,” Jacqueline adds. Coming up in 2020 are two twilight markets in February and March on a Friday evening for end of week shopping and wind down at the licensed bar. 2020 additional markets - Jan 12, Feb 9, Jan 26 - Sunday, 10-2pm. Twilight Friday markest Feb 21 and Mar 20 4-8pm. And every second Sunday of the month for the rest of the year. Check out the Raglan Creative Market on Facebook and www.raglanmarket.com. THE MONSTER COM PA NY

W

C R E AT I N G WO R K S F R O M C L AY, WO O D & M I X E D M E D I A hat is The Monster Company?

The Monster Company is a creative partnership between Hayley Hamilton and Karla Stevenson. Together we supply ceramics pieces to galleries throughout NZ. We also work independently, Karla makes her own ceramic range and jewellery. Hayley makes sculptural pieces and paints. The Monster Company gallery allows us to have a space that we can use as a sounding board for new ideas for our individual work... as well as a display for our Monster range, which is familiar to people as it is seen in many galleries. Is this your actual workshop? Yes this is our actual workshop, we make every single ceramic piece you see in the gallery here. Our kilns and equipment are on site, including Karla’s favourite piece the pug mill! An industrial extruder which recycles the clay and saves us hours of wedging!

H

ow would you describe Jet Collective?

Jet Collective is a long standing space on the main street of Raglan. It is owned and operated by Jo Sweeny, Karla Stevenson, Jillian Lankshear, Jessie Galloway, Sarah Steed and Hayley Hamilton, a group of local creatives who make and sell their own work in the gallery. The tiny little gallery also sells work on behalf of other NZ makers and crafts peoples. How and when did it start? Jet was started in 2001 by an eclectic group of locals who wanted a shared space to showcase and sell the work they were making. It was an inspired vision that has changed members over the years but has remained true to the original concept of a collective for local creatives. How does it function as a collective? It’s a pretty simple idea really, everything is shared. From the wallspace, the working hours, the ideas, the choosing of stockists, window displays and of course the

What’s new at The Monster Company? For The Monster Co we have a new range of chunky little cubes made from a North Island clay. We hand make and stamp each one and they are finished with a blackbrown wash. Karla has been working on ceramic diffusers and Hayley is currently working on a new range of prints taken from her original paintings. The constant ideas and experiments are a wonderful part of being in a creative partnership, sounds naff but it is a case of do something you love and you really will never work a day in your life. It’s a very special place to come to work in everyday. Meeting the people that are buying your work or that are just inspired by what they see is all part of our working day, we feel very privileged to be able to do this. Did you both study art back in the day? Karla has a Bachelor of Media Arts majoring in Sculpture, she studied at Waikato and moved to Raglan in 2002.

bills! We run the shop ourselves, each working a day and a percentage of all collective members sales and stockists profit goes straight back into running Jet. It is a very effective way of running a business in today’s climate.

Hayley studied art at Central St. Martins School of Art and Design, London, before absconding to NZ for a year out about 27 years ago. What influence does living in Raglan have on your lives? Being creative pulls you towards other like minded people. Raglan has been a cornerstone part of both of our journeys and ultimately allows us to be in a community of creative thinkers and makers. Being so close to the sea and the mountain keeps us grounded and gives us a lovely sense of peace when the ideas won’t stop. You can find us at 58 Wallis Street, on the way to the wharf in the old dairy factory. www.etsy.com/nz/shop/TheMonsterCompany fb @themonsterco g @themonstercompan e bigmonsters@xtra.co.nz p 07 282 1841

What are the benefits of coming together as artists? The result is we get to sell our work with very low commission and meet the people that are buying our work. We all have a shared goal and the focus is on helping each other to succeed. It’s a very supportive environment for us to bounce ideas around, and share each others visions, success’ and sometimes failures! What can we expect to find in Jet this Summer? This summer our wee Jet is jampacked full of gorgeous NZ made work. The best selling items at the moment are God Jocks for men and women - amazing knickers made with off cuts from the clothing industry and the Ethique range of hair and body products, totally plastic free. The positive feedback has been quite overwhelming.

abi-sabi studio is a new collective retail space and working studio on Bankart Street, behind Atamira curating local art, plants and furniture / interior design elements. The idea behind the studio is a creative space to organically unfold with an emphasis on handmade and simple beauty. The name is inspired by the Japanese concept / way of living that helps us see the inherent beauty in imperfection, slowing down to appreciate simplicity, and acceptance of the transient, often incomplete nature of things. Contemporary Maori artist Marise Rarere will be curating the gallery wall space with her own works and plans for future exhibitions, Marise works are mindful and beautiful with a meditative element. Sill Life plants,

handmade ceramics and pots and hangers by Jasmine Edgar have found a new home in the studio making it easier to find your next pot plant or green gift. Roger Woolston from Ministry of Wood will be exhibiting locally made furniture as well as outdoor pieces to compliment the space. Interior design elements and books will also compliment the space such as cushions, rugs, lighting which will unfold over time also. We hope it is an inspiring space both for us and you. ou have recently introduced Raglan Floral Co but when did you start offering beautiful flowers to the Raglan community?

I began growing flowers when we moved to our property on Wainui Road in 2015. It soon became apparent that there was a need for locally grown, fresh, seasonal blooms. One thing turned into another and before I knew it a business was formed. Tell us about the types of flowers you like to work with and how you access them? I love to work with whatever is in season at the time. Nature is a wonderful source of inspiration and it seems only right to harness that energy. I grow a lot of my own seasonal flowers and foliage but Im also lucky enough to be part of a group of small scale flower farmers here in the Waikato who I love supporting and buying flowers from. Then of course there are the Auckland wholesale markets to fill any gaps. My ethos is fresh, seasonal and local. Flowers that are in tune

8 | Raglan Summer Holiday Guide

with the season, that come with as little ecological footprint as possible.

Do you do flowers for weddings?

What sets you apart from others? How would you describe your style of flowers? How did you learn the art?

Yes I sure do. I provide a full floral service for weddings. From the small intimate elopers to the big grand gatherings with all the trimmings.

My two greatest passions are gardening and creating. So when I came upon this idea, I felt like I had found my dream job.

I also offer a range of workshops and can cater to private groups such as corporate gatherings and ‘Hens’ looking for a unique experience.

I learnt my art through many hours spent in my studio playing with my garden abundance. Completely self taught but with a natural eye for colour and balance which is an important part of being a floral designer. I honed my skills on friends weddings and styled shoots, built up a social media following and the rest is history.

Where can people buy them from and how do they contact you?

My floral designs will always come with some elements that have been lovingly grown by myself or my fellow flower farming friends. The types of flowers that are old fashioned, full of charm, character and scent and that you just cannot purchase of the market floor.

I stock a regular stand at the Raglan Four Square. I have a roadside stall outside 494b Wainui Road. You can order a special occasion bunch through me directly or my website. I offer a free delivery service within the Raglan township. w www.raglanfloralco.co.nz \ e info@raglanfloralco.co.nz p 02102417967 You can also follow me on instagram (@raglanfloralco) and Facebook.

aglan’s famous open studio art trail is set to hit town in Easter 2020, and promises to showcase the best artists this side of the divvy. The Raglan Arts Weekend, now in its 11th year, draws thousands of art aficionados from across the country who come to get a sneak peek into the creative process of our local talent. “There’s something uniquely special about stepping into an artist’s environment and seeing how they have drawn their inspiration before committing to their medium,” says Nicky Brzeska, Co-ordinator for the Raglan Arts Weekend. “Take Miranda Caird’s home studio as an example and it’s not hard to see how the mesmerising ocean view translates into her really iconic work.” The Raglan Arts Weekend is a self-guided tour, with visitors using the newly redesigned Arts Trail map to help

H

them plot their own routes. The map has photographs of representative work for each artist and so visitors can see at a glance what they’re drawn to. The Raglan Community Arts Council who organises the event, also encourages visitors to start off at the Old School Arts Centre where a Preview Exhibition with two artworks from each participating artist gives a really good feel for the art on the trail. This year, the Preview Exhibition has a theme ‘Talking about Climate Change’ and artists are being asked to present work that speaks to this topic. The idea is to tie into the unique ‘green’ ethos of Raglan, and the environmental and sustainability-focused advocacy of the community.

The 2020 event also sees the launch of the mentorship programme, where the experience and expertise of a panel of senior art talent in Raglan will be leveraged to support new artists. With last year’s event attracting 13 new artist registrations, the team thought it beneficial to help emerging talent in areas including pricing, working to a brief and even art critique if requested. The Raglan Arts Weekend kicks off with the Preview Exhibition from Friday 20th March 2020 at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. Visitors can pick up a unique 300x300 artwork from a favourite artist for $200, secure a Climate Change showcase piece or plan who they’d like to visit. Visit www.raglanartsweekend.nz or www.facebook.com/raglanart for more information and to register as an artist by 31 December.

Hayley’s ideas are constant, like a permanent background chatter, chaotic and mostly irrelevant. Her paintings tend to be inspired by tiny moments that expand into whole scenes in her head. e tuhi me te marama - drawing with light. Geraldine’s style has been described as being poetic, ‘having a quiet eye’ - she captures a mood and a sense of ‘being there’.

Her aim is to keep the image as raw and real as possible - treating the digital image as if is was an analogue shot. Taking the art of photography back to the simplicity of film. Being a graphic designer also influences her photography style - composition, angles and textures, are all apparent in her images. Raglan, weather and music inspire this artist. The empty grey misty Raglan is her fave. Natural colours, nature’s palette. NZ’s raw beauty. All pieces sold from 2019 are one-offs - exclusive images just for you. Geraldine’s latest collection ‘THIS PLACE’ is currently being exhibited at Rock-it Cafe on Wainui Road, you can also find other pieces on display at Orca, The Shack and Seed Pilates studio. She is also part of the 2020 Raglan Arts Weekend at Easter in April.

B

rodie Reynolds is a Raglan based artist who works predominantly with oil paints to create mystical nature scenes.

She works with the notion of an ever-changing landscape, and the powerful unveiling of a single moment in time. The transparent layers in her work, explore a sense of lost and found, sometimes easily identifiable but often mysterious and ethereal. Layers of hazy mist dance around in the light, creating movement and discovery, and with this comes a sense of anticipation and discovery. New effects and “happy accidents”, keeps her practise fresh and organic. “I like to tap into the emotions that arise when we connect, converse, and surrender to the beauty around us. Time stands still, there are unseen forces present, and for a moment, there is a world of infinite possibilities”. Brodie will be opening her studio for the Raglan Arts Weekend on Saturday 11th April to Monday 13th April.

They document the iconic and instantly recognizable as well as the odd and interesting. I am fascinated by the back-story – the cultural history behind the well-known images, along with scientific rules and the mechanics of how things work. I explore these ideas within a graphic sensibility and play with scale, depth, text, current and old media, languages, currencies and slang to create multi-layers of meaning – the opportunity for each viewer to find and connect with something different.

Megan tries to narrate what is going on in her life but is more often than not surprised by the stories these whimsical characters would rather tell. Her paintings and drawings can feature girls in boats, bird people living in tents and haunted houses. Megan completed a Bachelor of Media Arts in 2005 majoring in Fine Art. She has exhibited her work in many exhibitions and local galleries over the years.

I deliberately create scratches, paint drips and weather-beaten marks to add character and a natural look, while using a colour palette that resonates with Me at the time.

OR DER FOR SUE A SHORT FILM

O

rder for Sue is the brainchild of first-time filmmaker Sue Bellerby who turned her short story about a case of mistaken identity into a film shot entirely on her mobile phone. Shot in Raglan and enlisting the acting skills of her friends, Sue had originally thought the film would only ever be shown to friends and family but she was encouraged to go ahead and enter the Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards (RAFFAs) where she took out the Phoenix Palm award. “I was very insecure about the movie, it’s a totally amateur production. I had to get through that.” Sue hopes her win at the RAFFAs will encourage other budding filmmakers to have a go at making their own short film. “You don’t need expensive equipment or money – all you need is your phone and some friends,” she says. Sue has some projects in the pipeline for next year’s awards and is currently in the process of submitting to other film festivals.

When did decide to make a film? Was the idea bubbling away for a while? What inspired the story? I first had the idea to make a movie when I was a young child of 9 or 10, I forgot about it, lived life married and had a family. It was not until earlier this year, when I made a promise to myself that I was going to make my movie, it was now or never. I had three goals 1. to complete the movie 2. for it to make sense and 3 to be entertaining. I began writing the story in January this year. It was based on an incident that happened to me a few summers ago in Raglan. I thought that it could make a good short film and would be relatively easy to film in and around Raglan where the incident happened. I even managed to borrow the original red car in the true story for the filming. When I was half way through the filming I realised the story was not going to work without some added material. I rewrote some new scenes and half way through filming I decided to change the ending.

What was the first thing you focused on? The first part of the process was having a good story and then working out how I was going to show rather then tell. The script and story changed a lot as I got going. I needed a new phone so upgraded to one with the best camera at the time - a Samsung S6. I researched on You Tube and spent some time practicing the shots with the actors. Obviously it’s a big project to pull off. What were some of the unexpected challenges? The scenes took a lot longer to film then I had anticipated. This meant that I had to film over several days instead of one. The weather did not play ball - one minute its raining then the next it’s not. The continuity is a little off at times but I did manage to get all the night scenes filmed with the full moon, one for each of the three months it took to film. The editing process was the most challenging for me, I was not well organised, I have learnt a lot from my mistakes.

The aftermath that’s left behind at our festivals can be a real buzz kill! Let’s think about how we can be smarter about the way we treat the planet and the resources left on it. We’ve got some super easy ways to jump on-board like bringing reusable bottles, containers and bags. Make sure you bring a good-quality tent too! THE COM M UNITY TH AT M A K ES A FESTIVA L THE MANY FACES BEHIND SOUNDSPLASH

E

arlier this year I had the opportunity to join the Soundsplash crew to help organisers Brian Ruawai and Naomi Tuaopepe and the operations team during the festival in January. At the end of the three-day event it was pretty clear to me the sheer amount of work and people

it takes to make an event of this caliber happen in Whaingaroa, Raglan. From operations to ticketing, production to security, medical teams and volunteers, everything has to come together like clockwork for Soundsplash to go off without a hitch. An especially hard task

when you are equipped with, not one but two, single-lane bridges as your core access ways to transport people to the venue. But it probably doesn’t take a lot to figure out that infrastructure can be an issue at the best of times in a small coastal town like Raglan.

ARIEL HUGHES DON’T BE A FESTIVILLAIN

This year at Soundsplash you’ll see some rad posters and graphics designed by local gal Ariel Hughes. Fresh out of Massey University, armed as a Visual Communications grad, she aims to create social change around how people perceive New Zealand music festival culture by promoting safer ways to party and influencing the ways people think about how to have fun. What is the kaupapa behind Don’t Be A Festivillain? ‘Don’t be a Festivillain’ is about promoting safe and positive festival culture. I want to support correct awareness and education surrounding the inevitable problems that consume the behaviours of people who participate in music festivals. We cannot control these with law enforcement but we can offer the correct influences and strategies around these issues that can reduce harm and create a wider

compassionate attitude towards festival culture in New Zealand. How do you feel about rolling out your first campaign in your hometown? Absolutely blessed! If I could pick any place for my first campaign to be it would have to be in my hometown where I had my first festival experience as a little grommie dancing around Soundsplash 11 years ago. For it to be implemented at a festival where not only adults can enjoy themselves but the youth of Raglan too emphasises on the ideas of what ‘Don’t Be A Festivillain’ stands for. A safe place for community, positivity and education for our tamariki to learn the right practices of attending festivals. To be able to give back to a my home, a community like Raglan would be one of my biggest achievements, where my love for festival culture was born. insta: @dontbeafestivillain

With that in mind, the Soundsplash crew is full of local faces working together so that visitors and locals alike have a wicked time in our home town. Maki Nishiyama Here’s some familiar faces you might know:

LINDA HOLMES VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

Linda Holmes, second from left. image / Margaret Dillon Best thing about the Volunteer Coordinator Role:

people that make up our Soundsplash crew year after year!

The volunteer position has been amazing as it has allowed me to learn and develop so many new skills and meet so many awesome new people from around the world. It’s great when you see the same people return year after year and some pretty tight friendships have been developed working with the Soundsplash crew. Any favourites on the crew? Wow that’s a tough one as I learnt in all my years of teaching that you just can’t have favourites!? That’s why I call everyone petal!I love working with the whole eclectic lot of

Favourite thing at Soundsplash every year is... Every year without fail I just love watching all the happy festival goers. Especially on the Friday and Saturday nights as people are leaving and waiting for the bus or going back to their tents, they are all so happy and friendly. Always saying thank you for the amazing time they have had. I know sometimes our teenagers get a hard time but honestly my encounters with them at all my time working at Soundsplash has always been positive. That’s why I do this - cause our kids are worth it!

G

reen Wave has been up and running for a few of years now? Give us an update. Hows it all

going?

We are actually just starting our fourth summer now. It’s amazing how much support the Raglan community has shown, so we’d like thank everyone for that. We love teaching and sharing something we are passionate about with our students. And we’ve had phenomenal feedback as well - we’ve become the top-rated surf school in New Zealand. It’s nice to know that our students are having such a positive experience. Who’s involved with the instructing? There’s three of us that run Green Wave together. Zennor Wernham, Wes Rogers and Bing Lyons. Between the three of us we have over 30 years coaching experience. People say how difficult it is to surf but what do you say to those who have never surfed and want to give it a go? Will they get up? Everyone stands up on our lessons. We actually offer a stand-up guarantee or your money back, and so far we have a 100% success rate. We don’t really put any pressure on our students. Sometimes they might feel a little nervous before we start, but we keep everything fun and relaxed. Before they know it, they’re already up and riding a wave. With free photos to prove it!

You offer daily lessons. Is it always at the same time? Our lesson schedule is based on the best tides and conditions for each day. This ensures that our students surf at the safest time and the easiest tide for learning. This makes a huge difference in the quality of a lesson. You can check the summer schedule on our website at www.greenwaveraglan.com Do you offer rentals as well? Yes, we have a range of boards and wetsuits available for hire. Lots of softtop beginner-friendly boards but also some good intermediate boards as well. You can ring us at 021 0841 3481 to inquire about rentals. What can we expect from Green Wave this coming Summer? Lots of happy surfers. We are stoked to be sharing our passion and knowledge of the ocean with people from around the world. Our aim is to keep the quality of the lessons very high, with emphasis on ocean awareness. We put a lot of energy into every lesson and it’s rewarding to see how excited our surfers get as their skills progress.

urfers to Ngarunui Beach, Manu Bay and Whale Bay will soon be seeing new ‘Surfers Code’ signs near the

water. Thanks to local funding by the Raglan Point Boardriders and a grant from Waikato District Council, the new signs will be up just in time for summer. With the water getting busier and busier, knowing the rules and practicing safety in the water is crucial here on the West Coast. The main theme of the Surfers Code in Raglan: Respect the environment, the ocean and most importantly, each other.

The infamous waves at Manu Bay attract surfers from around the world. But before you jump in the water just to say “I’ve surfed Manu Bay in Raglan”, take time to think if you really should be surfing there.

1. Point Break Ability: Intermediate to Expert - No Beginners 2. Paddling Out: Paddle wide of the Wave. If caught inside, stay in the white water. 3. Keep the Wave Face Clear: Keep out of the way of approaching surfer.

4. Give Way: Closest to peak has right of way. Wait your turn. Join at the end of the queue. 5. Remember to Communicate: Call It! Paddle with commitment and intent. 6. Control Your Equipment: Hold onto your equipment, it can be a danger to others. 7. Give Respect to Gain Respect: Don’t drop in! No snaking, blocking, fading or burning. 8. Respect the ocean, land and local community.

nly a stone’s throw away from the heart of the village stands the famous limestone coast, a unique landscape well worth the exploration. What used to be Raglan’s best kept secret is now making headlines, attracting travellers from all over the country and world. We caught up with Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard owners Candide & Stephen Reid to find out about the best way to get out on the water and discover the impressive coast for ourselves.. Q: Tell us, what’s so special about Raglan harbour’s limestone coast: The unique pancake rock formations are approximately 30 million year old. It’s actually an ancient seabed, which has risen out of the

ocean. Rain fall, tides and other environmental factors carved the rocks into very intricate and mystical shapes. It’s Mother Nature’s art piece! Q: What’s the best way to get there? If you are after a close encounter, then kayaking or paddleboarding is the best ways to get up close and personal with the coast. Around high tide, you can paddle right into the many nooks and crannies, it is truly unique! Q: Do we need experience to paddle to the pancake rocks? Not at all, we have many different options available to get you there, making it accessible to everyone. We offer rentals, tours and lesson, so depending on your abilities, we can

Annika, who is a vegetarian herself, has worked alongside her mum since 2014 when she was 15 and took time out for a year to work at Mr Milton’s Canteen in Hamilton to learn the art of making coffee. Along the way she picked up some culinary skills she hopes to put to use at Clover. “I really wanted to learn how to make great coffee and it was good to spend timed learning new skills in a new environment,” Annika says. The mother and daughter duo will draw on the hearty recipes and all-time favourites loved by their family. “We love good food in our family and putting tasty meals on the table is an important part of family life. There will definitely be love and deliciousness in our recipes at Clover,” Annika says. G R A H A M RO P E

How did you end up settling here?

How did you end up settling here?

My parents moved to Raglan in 1974 as my father transferred here as a Livestock Representative for Dalgetys. Over the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s they operated several businesses most notably the original Raglan West Dairy (now The Food Department) and Seagulls Restaurant (now Orca). I attended Raglan Area School and then into Hamilton for high schooling and completed a Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Canterbury in the early 1990’s.

Teresa and I found Raglan back in 2013. Our first visit was by bicycle from Auckland to Raglan. We would stay the weekend and loved the charm and character of the town. We have owned property here and worked in the real estate industry since this time and thoroughly enjoy doing the very best by people whenever the opportunity arrives.

What do you love about the lifestyle you have?

We love the opportunity to enjoy many outdoor adventure activities including golf, cycling, sailing and being close to the coast and fresh air! We also enjoy having a coffee and meeting new friends.

Real Estate and family take up most of my time these days but I try to take advantage of what Raglan has to offer as much as time allows. It’s great to not have to go far for good waves and good fishing. I enjoy snowboarding in winter with my partner and our three sons and I recently had a week off in Samoa for a surf trip which was a nice break. What community projects do you get behind and support? I have sponsored the Raglan Golf Club with hole flags, score cards and 3 major tournaments a year for over a decade. Other more recent but now annual events I love to support are the ‘L J Hooker King of the Single Fin’ surfing contest held in February each year and the ‘Karioi Trail’ mountain running event. I often sponsor other one off community events and volunteer my ‘L J Hooker jet ski’ for water patrol for the Whaingaroa Hoe waka ama annual event. What’s important to you about the future of Raglan? Developing and managing growth in Raglan sustainably. With protection of the harbour, land and ocean environments at front of mind, so it is still a great place to live for our future generations and their families.

STEPHEN O’BY RNE What is your connection to Raglan? My wife, whose family comes from Raglan. How did you end up settling here? After meeting my wife while overseas, we relocated here in 2006. What do you love about the lifestyle you have? It’s a great playground, and there’s something for everyone. Get amongst it people. What community projects do you get behind and support? We support a number of local groups over the course of the year. I’m also a volunteer in the local Fire Brigade. What’s important to you about the future of Raglan That it retain it’s community spirit and values and not take what we have for granted. We’re privileged to live here.

CHRISSY COX How did you end up settling here? I came to live in Raglan over 40 years ago and, apart from a short period living in Hamilton and doing the reverse commute to Raglan to work, I have stayed. My three children all grew up here and attended Raglan Area School. And now I have two grandchildren at Te Uku School. What do you love about the lifestyle you have? Like everyone who comes here I love the beaches, the relaxed vibe and the beautiful scenery, but I think the thing that keeps me here is the people. I love the diversity - with people from many countries and cultures. And it seems that Raglan attracts friendly, chilled out people or else the atmosphere makes them that way! During my 22 years as a real estate salesperson here I had the privilege of meeting and getting to know many wonderful people. Whats important to you about the future of Raglan?

What do you love about the lifestyle you have?

What community projects do you get behind and support? Enjoybeing a member and supporter of the Raglan Golf Club. We sponsor a number of community projects as a local business. Whats important to you about the future of Raglan? Keeping its character and charm as a seaside town and supporting many of the pioneers in sustainable initiatives around Raglan.

MICHELLE O’BY RNE What is your connection to Raglan? Family, my mum grew up in Raglan. I have fond memories of visiting Raglan almost every Xmas as a child, but I would dread the car journey and also remember being car sick on a few occasions. How did you end up settling here? It was actually Steve that decided Raglan was a much better option than Hamilton on our return to NZ, it reminded him of where his mum is from in Ireland. What do you love about the lifestyle you have? We live in paradise within an incredible community and I am surrounded with amazing friends and all my animals!

RO B B I E R E G I N E R What is your connection to Raglan I have been in Raglan since the 70s, as Dad worked out here as a soil conservationist. My Mum, Dad, seven siblings and I came out here in the 70’s to surf and swim out the back of the waves. We were the only ones on the beach back then. Black sand was not popular, nor the rugged ocean. Seven out of eight children live here to this day. What do you love about the lifestyle you have? Family and friends are a big part of my life and most live in Raglan. So that makes living out here fun and full of adventure, music and dance - but my big love is being in the ocean. Working and living in Raglan is awesome, the fresh air, the people I know and the new ones I meet through my work, whom I have the privilege of introducing to this unique piece of NZ. What community projects do you get behind and support? We do sponsor many projects from surfing to snowboarding for individuals and teams who enter national and world wide competitions. I love being part of the Raglan Area School snowboarding competitions held at Mt Ruapehu, often in adverse conditions, which makes me proud of the students - winners all round for just being up there. Whats important to you about the future of Raglan? Maintain the essence of Whaingaroa, respect the land, respect the people, respect the ocean. Love and kindness to all, this is what our place should maintain.

I have seen a lot of changes in my time here. It is certainly much busier. But Raglan still has the same relaxed charm that drew me here all those years ago. I hope this continues and we can protect the wonderful environment that we all enjoy.

acqui from The Summer Holiday Guide caught up with local interior designer guru Rosie Worsp who is reluctantly selling the iconic Plantation house above the wharf. When did you arrive at Plantation house? How did you discover it? We owned the Bach over the road and always loved this house for its authenticity of an older house which had beautiful bones, position, and a Somerset Maugham feel. We have owned 3 houses in Rose Street over the past 30 years - the perfect location to have a bolt hole near the farm. What is the history of the house? The house is a 1920 California Bungalow with large open spaces designed to attract all day sun magnificent elevated views from the bar to the inner harbour and beyond taking in Te Akau hills falling into the sea. Have you made any changes? We have maintained the house. The previous owners had reworked and repiled the house so we have spent time giving it a plantation feel. What have you adored about living in the house and the location above the wharf? We love the vibe of the wharf. It’s a wonderful location. Private yet lots going on, Why are you moving on? We are now about to start another adventure nearer grandchildren. Very sad to be leaving this special house but times moving on!! he Raglan Project is now enjoying its third summer season in Raglan having become the go to for DIYers and Tradies alike.

The business has come a long way since ‘a couple of girls’ sat down and put a plan for a Hardware and Building Supplies business together. Business owners Gilleen and Yjosine saw a gap in the market and made sure they sourced well known brands and high quality products. “We started with an empty building, added a phone and it all grew from there. We picked a lot of people’s brains and asked what can we stock which will save them a trip over the hill.” And it seems to have worked, The Raglan Project is now a busy hub for locals and visitors needing to fix or build. Newcomer to the team Raglan local Matt brings with

him 30 years experience in the building industry so you can have confidence in the advise you are getting. The business ethos is “resolve the issue, solve the problem”. Gilleen says “We want everyone to leave with either the issue or problem resolved or at least knowing what to do or where to go next”.The Raglan Project is expecting to only get busier, with the start of building at the Rangitahi Peninsula fast approaching, the team are gearing up for a busy time. But of course no plan can go unchallenged! With the recent arrival of Yjosines daughter she is wanting to focus on family and now seems to be a great time to sell the business which is now on the market. “We are excited to find a new owner, there is so much scope and potential!”. ere at Raglan Medical we are known for our teamwork and this helps you get the health care that is right for you and at a time that suits you. With changes in doctors and nurses at the clinic this may mean that you do not see the same person every time that you come in but you will have a couple of doctors and nurses who are your key “go to” people and will be your own health care team. Occasionally the same doctor may want to follow up with you more closely for a particular concern that you are working on and if so they will tell you: if you are in any doubt, please ask. All doctors and nurses have access to your entire electronic records, including your results when they see you and so there should be no concern that they

will not know enough about your previous history. With your consent we can also access Waikato Hospital Clinical Work Station to follow up on appointments, view test results, etc. Sometimes if a doctor leaves they will directly “pass you on” to your next key doctor and you will have the opportunity to be involved in that decision. We have a group of people who are all highly qualified, confident doctors and nurses and they are all here to help you. Please give the new faces a chance if you don’t feel the need to see the “same old face” this time round. It can sometimes be really helpful to get a different perspective on your health concerns. The way we work together can mean that you get more of a combined approach to help you: two brains are usually better than one!

Before working at Raglan Medical I was at the local Westpac Branch for 16 years and really enjoy the change! Roimata Herman:I was born and bred in the Cook Islands. I moved to Auckland to complete medical training then worked as a junior doctor at Waikato Hospital. Being a GP was always on the cards as I enjoy multiple areas of medicine, in particular women’s and adolescent health. Carol Millar: I’ve been working at the clinic for 5 ½ yrs now, initially as a Receptionist then moving into the role of medical centre assistant 2 years ago. This newly created role within the practice was designed to provide primary care nursing support for both the doctors and nursing staff and to better meet the needs of our patients. I am also a St John Ambulance Officer and have been for 16 years. Being able to assist our community in times of medical or accidental emergencies is an extremely challenging, gratifying, yet rewarding role.

Michael Becker: I am a GP who has worked in the allergy arena for years at Medlab and in Australia, I have a special interest in food related allergies. I joined the Raglan Medical team in 2015 and work every Tuesday and Wednesday. I have lived in Otonga Valley for over 20 years and I’m enjoying working within the eclectic Raglan community. I spend a lot of my free time in the bush on my property, rehabilitating the forest and controlling pest species.

Kia Ora, we moved to raglan in 2016. We really enjoy raising our young family in this beautiful, dynamic coastal town. We continue to love working at Raglan Medical and with the Raglan community. Hamish Seton: I’ve been with Raglan Medical since 2016. The time has flown by with getting to know the place and the people. I’m really enjoying living and working in the Raglan community and all rural GP life has to offer. My areas of special interest are child health and skin cancer medicine. Madeleine Wells: I spent my early childhood years in Auckland and Orere Point, a small town on the Firth of Thames. Both Hamish and I have completed a post graduate diploma in paediatrics and children’s health is an area of medicine I really enjoy. I spend most of my time outside of work with our two children.

Mike Loten: I’ve been working at Raglan Medical since moving to Raglan with my family in 2007. I love the variety of work General Practice offers. I specialise in skin assessmemts, minor surgery and travel medicine. My sabbatical to Canada for a year in 2016 was a good experience for our family and reinforced how special Raglan is.

Michelle Meenagh:I have worked at the clinic since 2012 as Practice Manager. Originially from Ireland. I’ve been living in Raglan since 2006 with my kiwi husband and two young kids. My main role here is to ensure the smooth day to day running of the clinic whilst also managing all the HR and financial aspects of the business. I feel very lucky to be part of this dynamic team and to be able to contribute to the community through this role.

Sharon Mullany: I have been with Raglan Medical for over a year now after coming from Waikato DHB. It’s wonderful being a part of this very special community and a privlege working alongside the team here. An area that I’m particularly interested in is Manage My Health (MMH), a programme that enables patients to access lab results, order repeat prescriptions and book appointments online. Look forward to seeing you at Raglan Medical!

Tish Taylor: Kia Ora koutou, Ko Tish ahau. Originally from England, I came to NZ on a working holiday for a year. 23 years and 2 kids later I’m still here! For the last 12 years I have worked as a district nurse for Raglan and the surrounding areas. I absolutely love my job, the amazing team that I work with, the beautiful countryside that I drive around but mostly the people that I have the privilege to care for. And now we have our fancy new rooms at Raglan Medical Centre!

They’ll respond in their own unique — and often infuriating way!

So how do you affect change? By learning and using NLP (NeuroLinguistic Programming), you’ll develop innovative, fluid ways of thinking and behaving. Y ou’ll be able to discern and handle the real, often deeper issues. The tools you’ll discover will enhance what you already do and put your people skills on speed! You’ll be amazed at your new levels of confidence and authenticity as a coach and leader. What’s NLP? NLP consists of a body of well-proven, practical skills and techniques, backed by neuroscience. NLP works consistently to effect profound and lasting behavioural change.

from the

raglan business chamber The Raglan Business Chamber has wrapped up another year full of networking events and ongoing Member advocacy. Take a look at what we’ve accomplished in 2019. In March the Chamber hosted International Women’s Day in Whaingaroa, where we brought together a lineup of influential leaders from around the Waikato to celebrate and inspire the incredible women, and men!, doing business in Whaingaroa. May saw the rollout of Techweek across the country, and the Chamber organised a full-day of training at the Bowling Club to help get our local business owners up-to-speed. The Raglan Business Chamber AGM was held in July, where we welcomed on new Board Member, Kendyl Haultain of Raglan based social media marketing and strategy company, Make Social Click. Kendyl has brought new energy and insight into the Board and is lending her knowledge to help us step up our own social media game. In October we flew our administrator, Lani Puriri, to Invercargill to attend the New Zealand Chambers Conference, which

enabled us to further connect with Chambers from around the country. As a Member of the Raglan Business Chamber, businesses not only have more one-on-one access to our local business network, but businesses also get exclusive Member only business savings, thanks to the National Discounts programme. Outside of events and networking, Board Members have been busy advocating on behalf of the Chamber Members, representing the Chamber in front of Council and the Community Board, and supporting on-going local community issues. Board Members are active year-round, representing the Chamber and our Members in various local initiatives, inlcuding WRAP, the Whaingaroa Raglan Affordable Housing Project, at Wastewater Treatment Plan meetings with Council, and the most recent launch of Raglan Local Energy. The Board has been busy this year discussing the future of Raglan’s Visitor and Information Centre with Council as well. As part of these conversations, the Board has eagerly been learning about the Tiaki Promise, and we invite everyone, visitors and residents alike to find out more about

this new initiative, which encourages visitors to Aotearoa to help us preserve and protect our land. The Board has also supported the ongoing work of the Raglan Naturally Community Plan over the last three years, advocating for sustainable business and better destination and visitor management. This includes participating in Focus Group conversations and making sure Member and local business interests are vocalised at the table. While we do host year-round events and activities for Members to network kanohi ki te kanohi, face to face, much of the work of the Chamber Board happens behind the scenes, as we continue to support, foster and advocate for vibrant and sustainable business activity in our community. The Raglan Business Chamber would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. We hope you enjoy our community and all it has to offer. Cheers to 2019 as we look forward to a bright and brilliant 2020. The Raglan Business Chamber Board

hank you Raglan, for supporting Christmas in the Park again this year. Christmas carols, local artists and Stan Walker were the features of this year’s event held at Papahua Domain on Sunday evening.

I particularly want to thank all our sponsors including over 20 local businesses who gave so generously to help make the evening a possibility. Our major sponsors were, WEL Energy Trust, Raglan Community Board (WDC), Raglan Community Charitable Trust, Rangitahi and SummerGlow Apiaries. All the sponsorship and practical help from so many made the task of organising an event like this so much easier and a real privilege. For a full list of sponsors, please check out our face book page, ‘Raglans Christmas in the Park’. As well as our sponsors, others helped by giving their time. I would like to especially thank, Xtreme Waste, Raglan Sign Company and The Maori Wardens for their help with parking and traffic management. Finally thank you to all who came along on the night, your support made it all worthwhile. Have a great Christmas Raglan! Pastor Roger Peart, Surfside Church Images thanks to Leanne Roughton

aving Raglan as part of the TaranakiKing Country Electorate is like having a piece of gold.

As the local Member of Parliament of a large electorate it is tricky being in so many places all of the time, but Raglan is a place I treasure and enjoy spending time in. The local people are incredibly friendly and there is always a warm welcome at each of my visits. Being fortunate enough to stay overnight in Raglan is a highlight, and having some time for Louis and I to walk along Ngarunui Beach enjoying the rugged coast line is always a highlight. Experiencing the amazing food that is always readily available is a must or sitting on the wharf eating fish and chips looking across the ocean – I’m not biased but Raglan really does serve up the best of everything! aglan Karioi Trail organisers celebrated two new highs at the seventh running of the annual gutbuster on Saturday – the record numbers who took to the hills as the event becomes more family-oriented, and an exciting new partnership with the community-led Karioi Project.

Bringing the conservation project on board meant some participants, like Kate Sandwell and Tim Duff, were sponsored and ran specifically to raise money to help save and protect the wildlife on Mt Karioi so the maunga becomes the seabird haven it once was. The partnership also meant there were more volunteers than usual – both Karioi Trail and Karioi Project supporters – to lend a hand on the day. “We couldn’t do without the volunteers,” event founder and director Francois Mazet told the Local Rag. Neither could the event happen without its sponsors, 80 percent of whom were from Raglan, he said. This year’s event attracted 400 registrations from around New Zealand and from far-flung countries including Hungary and France, says Francois, who is himself originally from the Basque country which straddles Spain and France. “Lots of international travellers are keen to come to Raglan.”

He’s especially pleased with how the turnout has grown every year from an initial 65 entries back when there was just the one gruelling 24km race. That race takes competitors twice to an elevation of 1850 metres, making it one of the most challenging endurance runs around. But now the event is “accessible to everyone”, Francois points out, because there’s also a 10km run/walk providing a taste of the tough mountain trail and a 5km fun run for younger members of the family. “And on the finish line we offer free drinks, food and a lot of spot prizes,” he adds. Conditions for the 24km race were “perfect” this time round, says Francois, who runs the mountain every week and also finds time to help out as a Karioi Project volunteer. He says it was a cool start to the day for the first ascent, but the cloud cleared to reveal those “spectacular” views along the west coast and across the Waikato. The first to complete the 24km course last Saturday was Rotorua runner David Haunschmidt, whose time of 2hrs 47mins was just shy of the 2hrs 42mins race record set two years ago. But Rodrigo JacaGonzalez, who finished fourth

overall, was Raglan’s first runner over the finish line. Marion Millward was not only the first local woman to finish the 24km course but also fourth woman overall and first in her over-60 race category, while Cory Hartgill and Ngakau Benseman were the local team winners. In the 10km race Reuben Kendall was the first Raglan runner home and third overall, heading off fellow locals Ewan Ross (4th), Martin Carroll (5th), Riley Hartgill (6th) and Txema Mazet-Brown (7th). The first local woman to finish was Hariet Waffenschmidt.. This year also saw a team of 15 from a Brisbane running club include the Raglan event for the first time on its annual trail run calendar, says Francois. Volunteers to get a special mention were Karioi Project ranger Duncan Mackay and his offsider Steve Clarke – who saw to it that runners safely negotiated a treacherous cliff edge – and Isabelle Lance who handed out bananas, oranges, lollies, popcorn and cramp sticks to those in need. Eighty litres of water for drink stations along the way were backpacked up the mountain by Francois and five volunteers from the Karioi Project before the event. But once racing was complete it was beers and a barbecue, along

with locally made dizzy blocks and Little Green vegan foods, at Phillip Swann’s farm just off Ruapuke Rd. Francois says while Swanney – as he’s better known – hasn’t done the race which starts and ends on his family property, he has hinted he may give the 10km course a go when the event is in its 10th year. It’s only three years till then, laughs Francois, and “for sure” the Karioi Trail will still be happening. Already it’s on the trail-running map, he says, and next year will become part of the Skyrunner World Series which attracts mountain-running athletes from around the world. Despite that Francois is adamant the Karioi Trail will remain a community-oriented, real “Raglan-style” event. Francois would like to thank sponsors and those involved in RKT: Rangitahi, Trek ‘n’ Travel, LJ Hooker, the Karioi Project, Timber Trail Lodge, Ozone NZ, Raglan SuperValue, I Generate, Studio 386, Tailwind, T8, Sweet As, Tonzu, Macpac, Raglan Chronicle, Morning Glory Coffee Co, Mama’s Kombucha, MerKaBa, Wahinemoe, Roll Up, Trade Aid, Raglan Surf Emporium, Westcoast Stoneware, Raglan Apiaries, Hemp T-shirts, Dizzy Blocks, Little Green NZ, Taylor, Russell, Chris, Pete, Nathan, Swanney, Marco, Vaughan, local iwi and all the volunteers. Whether you live here or are visiting us for a day or two, you’ll soon have your ‘favourite things to do’ around town. Like hanging out at any one of our local coffee shops, where you’ll find young families, visitors and locals alike spending time talking, laughing and connecting. Or sitting on Bow Street or down by the water, watching the world go by. Supermarket catch ups and friendly smiles as you pass others walking down the beach are some of my favourites. I personally love this time of year, enjoying the summer sunshine, the fresh smell of line dried washing, the tang of salt air, barefeet walks, jetty jumping, but most of the all the laid back, welcoming vibe that our community is known for.

K

ia ora koutou and Happy New Year! It seems only a few weeks ago that we were ringing in 2019 and here we are 12 months later, welcoming another

year and the start of the Summer holiday season. I am sure the town will be humming with whānau, friends and visitors–especially when the sun is shining.

for the night and how you treat our landscape. Have you heard the saying ‘leave only footprints’?... think of that when you are here in Raglan, take your rubbish with you and dispose of properly and please refrain from using the great outdoors as a toilet. Waikato District Councils’ Freedom Camping By Law only allows for three nights stay per month across our district, for freedom camping. On that note, remember your reusables: reusable shopping bags, coffee cups, containers, paper or beeswax wrapping for your food and please put your rubbish in the bin. If the bin is overflowing, please take it home with you.

The warm summer sun brings an influx of visitors into our community, and we hope you’ll have a little extra patience as you make your way around town. I really encourage you to get to know ‘the Raglan way’.

Stuck for parking in town? Pop over to Papahua Domain (by the campground) it’s an easy few minutes walk back into town. Alternatively, there is parking on James Street and at the rugby sports grounds off Cross Street, there is ample parking there, and it’s only a short stroll from there to the shops or down to the wharf.

Take time to let traffic cross the one lane car bridge, from both sides! If you see the cars backing up toward town or Raglan West, let them through, a couple of extra minutes waiting won’t end the world.

It is really important to remember the ‘3 P’s’ only down the loo: pee, poo, and paper. Help keep Raglan nice and clean for both visitors and residents, plus it helps to prevent overflows into our beautiful moana.

Also, to those visitors who are freedom camping, we ask that you be mindful of where you decide to park up

Enjoy being in this special place we are lucky to call home - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
