SUPPORT LOCAL THIS SUMMER

HAPPY HOLIDAYS BUT SAFETY FIRST Your guide to summer in Raglan!

From the Raglan Chamber

W

e are lucky in Raglan to have lots of locally owned businesses, rather than faceless corporations.

Most of our businesses are locally owned and are our neighbours or parents we see at the school run. In Raglan you will often see the owner/ operator working on the floor in your favourite stores or cafe. Our local businesses are vital to the on-going resilience of the economy, and we need to give our businesses as much support as possible They help our local shopping centres feel like vibrant hubs for our community, where we meet friends, pick up a coffee and get some fresh food for our fridges at home. Local businesses create jobs that help us all pay rent, mortgages and keep food on the table. They provide goods and services right here in town which means we don’t have to spend hours (and petrol!) driving somewhere else for what we need. Shopping local brings us all greater benefit. It’s about more than the product or service you buy. It’s about keeping the money you spend in the local economy and keeping it working in the town to help us all. Local businesses are often generous sponsors of local events, clubs and charities. These businesses pay salaries to local staff and keep money in the town and region but they also work on growing and developing staff, teaching them skills and enabling them to grow as people. Let’s support local this festive season and into the summer.

If someone in the water is in trouble and surf lifeguards are on patrol, let them know. If you can’t see any surf lifeguards, call 111 and ask for police. Police have a direct line to surf lifeguards and others who can help. If you’re in the water and in trouble yourself, signal for help.

N

garunui beach is patrolled by the paid lifeguard service until Friday 1st Mar 2024. Regular weekend volunteer patrols run until the end of Easter weekend.

Help them out by following these simple guidelines 1. Know How To Float If you don’t know how to float, don’t go into the water. Just being able to float when you are in the water can increase your chance of survival. Floating allows you to calm yourself and keep your airways out of the water. It is also the first thing to do if you get caught in a rip. 2. Find The Safest Place To Swim Remember if you are heading to the beach, always swim between the red and yellow flags on the southern end of the beach. The surf lifeguards are there to help keep beachgoers safe, by keeping a constant eye on the sea as they continuously scan for hazards or people in difficulty, keeping on top of weather forecasts and understanding the swell and tide conditions too. 3. If In Doubt, Stay Out Waves can be bigger than they look, dangerous rip currents are hard to spot and weather conditions can be unpredictable. If you feel uncomfortable about getting into the water, stay out. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Too many people get into trouble in the water because they overestimate their abilities and underestimate the conditions. 4. Take Care of Others Always keep children within arm’s reach in or near the water. Waves can move quickly and unexpectedly and can knock kids off their feet and sweep them away. Everyone has different levels of ability, so watch out for your mates too. 5. Know How to Get Help

Summer Safety From Raglan police We want you to all have a great summer whether you’re visiting for the holidays or you are lucky enough to live here. For our locals, we know you will make visitors feel welcome. If you’re visiting our town, we want you to leave with happy memories of your stay in Raglan. Help make it a wonderful summer for everyone • Be responsible. Do not drink and drive. Make plans ahead of time if you are going to be drinking. • Be careful. Don’t leave property inside your cars. Lock your cars and your homes. • Be patient on the roads. Everyone deserves to reach their destination. Give yourself plenty of driving time and enjoy the journey. Although this time of year is known as the festive season, for some, it is far from festive. It can be a very lonely, sad time of the year. Just a reminder to keep an eye on your family, friends and neighbours. Check up on them. Ask them if they are OK, and if they are not, encourage them to seek help from experts. The Mental Health line is 0800 505050. There is a liquor ban in place throughout the year in the CBD. From 23rd December through to the 6th January every year there is a Raglan area wide liquor ban in ALL public places. This goes from Te Uku, through Raglan township, down the coast to Ruapuke and includes Te Mata. Any breach of liquor ban can result in a $250.00 instant fine. It is important that you report non-urgent incidents to 105 (or go online to 105.police.govt.nz) and for emergency assistance, call 111 A very merry Christmas and happy holidays from your local police officers, Linda, Andrew and Raewyn. Volunteer Coastguard Thinking about checking out those epic fishing spots just across the bar? From the Manukau and Tairua to Raglan and Waimakariri, Coastguard volunteers responded to a number of bar crossing accidents last summer, several of which saw people not return home to their loved ones. Over summer, Coastguard volunteers will be out on the water ensuring Kiwis can enjoy our beautiful waterways safely and with confidence. Do your part and make sure you and your whānau don’t become a statistic this holiday season. If you need to contact Coastguard for on-water assistance, please call *500. For marine emergencies please call 111 or VHF Channel 16.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF KAYAKING EXCELLENCE A review of Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard

A

dventure enthusiasts, allow me to introduce you to Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard, a beloved family-owned and operated business that is currently celebrating an impressive 20 years of delivering extraordinary kayak experiences in this picturesque coastal region. Behind this exceptional venture is the Reid family, owners and operators since day one – Stephen, Candide, and their son Sky who we proudly feature on our 2024 cover. They embarked on this journey with a dream and boundless hope, and today, 20 years later, their joy and passion continue to fuel their entire team. Each team member embodies professionalism, care, and a dedication to creating memorable experiences. At the heart of their business is the commitment to fostering good times and connecting people with nature and each other. Nestled in the heart of town, Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard operates right by the water edge at Bow Street jetty, a perfect location to access the pancake rocks and explore the stunning Raglan Harbour. And to commemorate their 20th anniversary, they’ve taken their most iconic excursion called “The Kayak & Coffee” which was created at the very humble beginning, to the next level, refreshing it with the use of their brand-new sea kayaks, hence the new name “The Sea Kayak Excursion”. This is a journey synonymous with quality adventure and relaxation. It ticks all the boxes if we’re being honest. During your excursion, you get to explore deep into the mystical limestone coast and indulge in decadent treats, fresh fruits, and locally roasted organic coffee on the beach along the way. This isn’t just a kayak excursion; it’s an outing that celebrates the natural beauty of the coastal paradise and the pleasure that comes from slowing down. (This is a 3-hour guided tour - please note that some experience is required for this option). For those who are new to kayaking, seeking a shorter outing, or a familyfriendly adventure, the Limestone

This popular option also explores the core of the pancake rocks along the limestone coast and is perfect for beginners and adventures alike. (This is a 2-hour guided tour on quality sit-on-top kayaks) That said, it pays to note, that both of their guided excursions focus on sharing a deep passion for the local environment and honouring the vibrant history of the community. Nature is the ultimate escape, a way to reset and rejuvenate, and kayaking is your ticket to a personal encounter with its wonders. For the experienced kayakers that are wanting to rent their equipment and go on their own venture, they provide priceless technical guidance, a must have for those planning to enjoy the freedom of rentals, ensuring safety and enjoyment. Raglan harbour is very tidal and so you can trust their team to direct you in the right option when booking with them. At Raglan Kayak, it is clear to see that your experience is at the core of their business principles. They provide top-notch customer service from start to finish, from seamless booking

experiences to the provision of high-quality equipment and professional friendly staff. Your adventure with Raglan Kayak promises to be a highlight of your visit to Raglan. And you can trust their 20 years of local experience to truly cater to your unique needs in a safe and exciting manner. The options of guided tours, freedom rentals and lessons are on the menu for all to enjoy. Focussed on inclusivity, they can point you to your ultimate option in accordance with your experience and fitness level.

If you’re unsure about which is the best adventure for you, feel free to contact them directly, visit their website at WWW.RAGLANKAYAK.CO.NZ or drop by and meet their team by the water’s edge at Bow Street Jetty, 9am to 5pm seven days a week during the high season, weather permitting. Their workplace is as open-air and welcoming as it was two decades ago, consisting of two trailers and a waterfront service set up simply under a beautiful Pohutukawa tree.

SALUTATIONS FROM SOUNDSPLASH

T

he team behind Soundsplash is excited to celebrate 23 years of Soundsplash festival, which strives to create a unique environment bringing together live music, art and culture.

We owe a huge thanks to the dedicated individuals who contribute to Soundsplash, including our diligent staff, contractors, and talented artists, not to mention the support from the Raglan community and beyond. Converting green fields into a fully-fledged festival venue is no small feat, and we’re fortunate to enlist the help of committed Raglan locals each year. Their contributions range from extensive grass mowing to catering for our crew, stage setup, security, and ensuring the overall well-being of everyone involved. A number of our departments are headed by familiar faces from the community and we also have some young locals, who once attended Soundsplash, stepping up into leadership positions which is always heartwarming to see. As ususal, we expect the town population to swell over the summer period and especially during the weekend of our event which runs from 19-21 January 2024. As festival organisers we are committed to continually enhancing the festival experience. This year, we are implementing several changes to address the prolonged wait times encountered at the previous event. Earlier in the year we announced major changes to the entry process, including the introduction of a Road to Raglan Auckland return bus service and staggered entry slots to cut down on the amount of traffic coming into Raglan and control the flow during peak times. We appreciate everyone’s patience during these busy summer moments. For more information, visit our festival website soundsplash.co.nz.

ia ora koutou,

I went to the new look Surfside Church ‘Christmas in the Park’ this year at Wi Neera Street, although it was raining, it didn’t dampen the spirits of those who came along to enjoy the entertainment and kai. It was great to hear a snippet of the history from matua Sean about rangatira Te Awaitaia who had his runanga house where we were standing and the original name ‘Putoetoe’ for the area, a reminder to me that we live on a landscape with a rich history. I had the privilege of attending the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade awards night recently, not only did I get the opportunity to give out service medals to deserving recipients, I also got to give one of my dearest friends, Dirk De Ruyssher his 14 year long service award and listen to his heartfelt korero to his colleagues. Thank you team Raglan for all you do for our community, you are deeply appreciated. On that note, a big acknowledgement to all our voluntary and service organisations in our community, what you provide to supporting our wellbeing is amazing; Raglan Surf Life Saving, Raglan Coastguard, Raglan Lions, Raglan Community Patrol, Surfside Church, Community Health Shuttle, Ambulance, Feed the Kids, Timebank, Whaingaroa Weedbusters, Coastcare, our local police and Raglan Naturally to name some. COME TO RAGLAN FOR THE SURF.... THEN STAY FOR THE DIRT with Cyclery Raglan & the Raglan Mountainbiking Club

R

aglan will always be famous for its surf, but it is also becoming popular for its mountain bike network at Te Ara Kakariki in the pine area of the Wainui Reserve.

Thanks to the dedication of a small but loyal group of volunteers, the trail network has been growing slowly over the last 8 years. There is a good mixture of family friendly grade 2 trails and some more skill required grade 4-5 ones. Although the area is not huge, the trails will offer a nice 1 to 2 hour workout. Access is free and the trails are accessible most of the year, even during the wet winter months. As you can expect, all this hard mahi comes with a cost, so Raglan Mountainbiking Club is seeking more support and is on the lookout for more club members.

You can become a club member for a $20 yearly fee. For $50, the club will throw in a club t-shirt and sticker. Or you can kindly make a donation by scanning the QR code by the trail entrance Forgot to bring your bike? No worries. You can rent bikes from the local bike guru at Cyclery Raglan, 10 Bankart St. Full suspension bikes can be hired from Raglan Rock’s Adventure Base, Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive. Cyclery Raglan has a fully equiped workshop for all your bike repairs and E-Bike tuning. Bike sales, bike accessories and parts, kids scooters, even a copy & print service and key cutting. It is actually a pretty cool looking bike shop. Sorry, we scooters.

RAGLAN SURF COMPANY & HUGHES SURFBOARDS

R

aglan Surf Company’s surfboard room and rental offerings are a testament to the local craftsmanship of Hughes Surfboards. Instead of the mass-produced, big-name branded surfboards shipped in from overseas, the racks are adorned with Hughes Surfboards, meticulously designed and handmade right in the heart of Raglan.

The genesis of Raglan Surf Company dates back to 1992 when legendary surfboard shaper Craig Hughes and his wife Liz founded the establishment. Initially conceived as a retail space to support Craig’s burgeoning surfboard shaping business, the store thrived, becoming a hub for the surfing community. In those early days, the surfboard factory operated adjacent to the retail store in the town center. However, as demand grew, Craig relocated the factory first to Rangitahi Peninsula and later to Whale Bay, where Hughes Surfboards remains today. Before Craig’s passing in 2013, a pivotal decision was made to separate the surfboard shaping business into its own entity, aptly named Hughes Surfboards. Despite this division, Raglan Surf Company remains the exclusive home to the locally made boards, now crafted by Craig’s son, Luke. Luke has seamlessly continued his father’s legacy, shaping iconic designs such as the Link, Fushter, and a reconfigured Man-o-War. Introducing his own innovations, he has expanded the Hughes Surfboards lineup to include designs like the SB19, SB21, and the Unknown. The tradition of crafting custom surfboards, initiated by Craig, persists under Luke’s stewardship. Beyond merely producing a tangible product, the creation of a custom surfboard is a collaborative narrative, shaped through conversations, evaluations, and a profound understanding of the surfer’s unique needs. The essence of Hughes Surfboards extends beyond the product; it is a narrative that encapsulates the surfer’s journey, the history, and the shared joy of witnessing these bespoke designs come to life in the water. This commitment to authenticity and personalized service reflects Craig’s ethos and passion, which has been carried on by Luke. Hughes Surfboards stands as a bridge between craftsmanship and the surfing community. This ethos has

GREEN WAVE SURF SCHOOL Learn to surf!

G

reen Wave has been up and running for awhile now, give us an update. How’s it all going?

We are actually just starting out our eighth summer. It’s amazing how much support the Raglan community has shown, so we’d like to thank everyone for that. We’re also excited to see a lot of new faces in town with so many travellers arriving from overseas. We love teaching and sharing something we’re passionate about with our students. And we’ve had phenomenal feedback as well we’ve become the top-rated surf school in New Zealand. It’s nice to know that our students are having such a positive experience. Who’s involved with the instructing? There are three of us that run Green Wave together: Zennor Wernham, Wes Rogers and Bing Lyons. Between the three of us we have over 30 years coaching experience. We also have a team of talented local surfers and former Raglan Surf Academy students helping us out through the busy months. People say how difficult it is to surf but what do you say to those who have never surfed and want to give it a go? Will they get up? Everyone stands up on our lessons. We actually offer a stand-up guarantee or your money back, and so far we have a 100% success rate. We don’t really put any pressure on our students. Sometimes they might feel a little nervous before we start, but we keep everything fun and relaxed. Before they know it, they’re already up and riding a wave. With free photos to prove it!

Do you offer any kind of kids camp / summer holiday programmes? We are running kids camps through the school holidays! It’s a great way to introduce kids to surfing in a fun, safe environment. We offer weekly camps as well as daily drop ins to fit everyone’s schedule. You offer daily lessons. Is it always at the same time? Our lesson schedule is based on the best tides and conditions for each day. This ensures that our students surf at the safest time and the easiest tide for learning. This makes a huge difference in the quality of a lesson. We often run multiple lessons per day in order to keep group sizes smaller. You can check the summer schedule on our website at www.greenwaveraglan.com Do you offer rentals as well? Yes, we have a range of boards and wetsuits available for hire. Lots of soft-top beginner-friendly boards but also some good intermediate boards as well. You can ring us at 021 0841 3481 to inquire about rentals. What can we expect from Green Wave this coming Summer? Lots of happy surfers, whether they’re keen travellers or local kiwi families. Our aim is to keep the quality of the lessons very high, with emphasis on ocean awareness. We put a lot of energy into every lesson and it’s rewarding to see how excited our surfers get as their skills progress.

With the water getting busier and busier, knowing the rules and practising safety in the water is crucial here on the west coast. The main theme of the Surfers Code in Raglan: Respect

1. Point Break Ability: Intermediate to Expert - No Beginners 2. Paddling Out: Paddle wide of the wave. If caught inside, stay in the white water. 3. Keep the Wave Face Clear: Keep out of the way of approaching surfers.

4. Give Way: Closest to peak has right of way. Wait your turn. Join at the end of the queue. 5. Remember to Communicate: Call It! Paddle with commitment and intent. 6. Control Your Equipment: Hold onto your equipment, it can be a danger to others. 7. Give Respect to Gain Respect: Don’t drop in! No snaking, blocking, fading or burning. 8. Respect the ocean, land and local community.

SURF RAGLAN WHĀINGAROA WITH DANIEL KEREOPA Surf Raglan Whāingaroa is a new branded surf school by Daniel Kereopa

D

aniel Kereopa is a legendary local surfer, Māori, waterman ambassador, and has competed on the surfing world circuit from a young age. The Summer Holiday guide caught up with DK and his wife Renée to learn more about their surf school and what they offer visitors and locals this summer. When did your surf school start and what was your vision?

We have actually operated for a number of years under the name DK Surf School but have wanted to step away from using my name for a business enterprise because I have other projects. I still wanted to have a platform here in Whāingaroa for visitors to learn to surf through our philosophies so we created Surf Raglan Whāingaroa. The vision is basically two simple things; it’s a surf school with instructors who are Maori water people, who are connected to our Moana and it’s a place of work that has Maori values so that as Maori we are practicing and growing who we are as water men & women. And second it’s a surf school for visitors to learn how to have a relationship with our moana through surfing with talented water persons in our community. Where do you operate from? We will be operating from Ngarunui Beach just like the other surf schools; visitors to Whāingaroa are spoiled for choice.

What do you offer for those wanting to try surfing this summer or those wanting to improve their skills? We offer one on one coaching and small group surfing lessons, because it’s important to us that our ratios of instructor to students is small for the best learning and coaching environment. For me it’s about the instructor’s knowledge being valued and the clients being able to receive and learn more than just the generic surf lesson.

R AGL AN GOLF CLUB Raglan’s hidden gem

I

f you haven’t paid a visit to the beautiful Raglan Golf Course you should put it on your “to do” list this summer. The picturesque 18-hole course is another of Raglan’s hidden gems. Perfectly nestled on the estuary-edge, the course holds a golfing challenge for the beginner or the experienced. The clubhouse is open from 10am most weekdays over the holidays and from 9am on the weekends. Golfers are welcome to enjoy refreshments in the newly decorated clubhouse, a great

place to relax and soak up the tranquil views after a round. The clubhouse is available for hire if you are planning a special event. There are clubs, trundlers, and golf carts available for hire, and the course also includes a mini-putt course which is great for some family fun. Bookings can be made by calling the clubhouse manager, Julian Pujante Doom on 078258483 or 0221070415. Web: www. raglangolf.co.nz or visit the club’s Facebook page.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT RAGLAN! From Morning Glory Organic Coffee

M

orning Glory’s coffee guy Paul Peterson returned to Origin this winter to follow up on their direct trade relationship with East Java coffee farmers Mas Dedik and Muhlis. The message he has to report is simple - thank you Raglan!

Your support is helping these families and communities to develop their coffee and processes to ensure an even greater grade product and a better standard of living all round. A win win....wow it truly does exist. Thanks to your conscious consumption he saw continued improvements and development in all aspects of village life. More jobs, higher wages and better equipment to name a few. All thanks to you. ‘It was an absolute honour to be there on the plantation, working alongside the families that are growing, picking, sorting and processing our daily dose of organic goodness. You can feel the love and energy just vibing from the lush eco-system as birdsong surrounds the diverse organic plantation.’ Morning Glory Organic Coffee is locally available by the bag at the Herbal Dispensary and Raglan 4 Square. THE HUT at Rangitahi Peninsula

T

he Summer Holiday Guide caught up with Kate from “The Hut’ in Rangitahi - a great destination cafe with a difference.

The Hut is your new project. What is your background and experience? I am a qualified chef with over 20 years in the catering industry. I first did my qualifications in the U.K and then went on to work in some of the best kitchens in London for some of the most highly recognised chefs - Gordon Ramsey, Marco Pierre White ,John Burton Race and Raymond Blanc. I also liked to race DH MTb’s so I was trying to combine the two which didn’t really mix, hehe. Instead I took my taste for adventure and food and became a yacht chef. Travelling the world on the high seas, cooking for many well known folks and using the best ingredients. What your vision for it ? It’s already been an established spot for good coffee and baked goods. I want to continue this on and make it a place people can escape to if they don’t want to head in to town. We have an amazing lawn to stretch out on to and a board walk the kids can play on. How will you incorporate the adjoining space ? It’s great to have the extra lounge area. And fantastic for hiding out of the West Coast weather at times. We are planning some supper clubs for the new year which is exciting and we may drag my other business -Casa Loco - up the hill to do some Mexican nights which have always been fun.

We also make GF vege wraps and homemade GF Banana bread.

I am encouraging the community to feel free to use this space for workshops and meetings and even to hold events. What is new in terms of what you offer? We are promoting pie day Fridays which bring in all the pie lovers! We make our own home made vege/meat pies and vege rolls which have proven pretty popular. People can pre order GF options and we can make up pie boxes if you have family staying and need an easy meal on hand.

Duck Island ice cream sandwiches are in stock which are seriously next level yum! And we will be stocking Bloom Patisserie tarts and Raglan Bagels. Where are you located and how do people get in contact or find out more?

Our lamb and tomato feta has a few followers along with the Workshop Brewery’s stout beef and cheese :-)

We are located at 29 Rangitahi Rd across the bridge and up the hill. Find us on FB and Insta @thehutraglan

Hey folks a little reminder to drop by our “re-fillery” this season. Swing by for a sample of our core-range bevies and fill your vessels straight from the tap. No vessel? No worries. Purchase a 1 or 2L Workshop growler and eliminate waste, or swipe some bottles straight from our fridge. We have an ever-changing variety of small-batch seasonal beers and fruit spritzer creations, all in-house and harvested within a 10k radius of our brewery. We’re also cranking out some seriously killer seasonal kombuchas and non-alcoholic fruit sodas, all on tap ;)

HAYLEY HAMILTON Painter

on the way to the wharf A

rtist Hayley Hamilton studied at Central St Martins School Of Art in London. She immigrated to New Zealand in 1993 and has been a full time artist since 2001. Her career to date has involved running an open studio workshop, using clay, painting and a little commercial illustration. She is now painting full time. Her practice involves original paintings from which she produces a range of limited edition prints. Digital art printed onto canvas and exhibition ceramic work. She has exhibited throughout NewZealand. Hayley’s new work is a juxtaposition of images, disjointed elements that ultimately blend together to create a painting, the idea being to portray snapshots of ordinary days, such as it is to be human. Ordinary days stacking up throughout our life to become an extraordinary existence. You can find her open studio at 58 Wallis street , above Raglan Joinery , between the Monster Company and Rivet.

SOUL SHOES TURNS 50 by Janine Jackson

T

here wouldn’t be many New Zealand businesses making hand-crafted items still operating after 50 years but Soul Shoes in Raglan can add that milestone to their belt.

Rob Galloway was not long out of school, working in forestry in Whangamatā and scrub cutting in Waitomo when he made a pair of hand-stitched sheepskin boots. It was 1973 – New Zealand’s population had just reached three million, Kiwis were protesting France’s nuclear testing in French Polynesia, John Clarke’s alter ego Fred Dagg was born and colour TV had just arrived. The inspiration for the sandals that Soul Shoes are famous for was born in the back blocks of Waitomo. “We had nothing to do at night so my mate made a pair of sandals and I made a (hand-crafted leather) chessboard,” he says. Moving to Whangamatā, they started making shoes and selling them at the beach. “Straightaway, people started wanting us to make stuff.” Making to order, the pair gained momentum with their handmade sandals. “There was a shop in Hamilton called Hookers Handcrafts and we used to go there, like the cobbler and the elves, and buy enough leather to make two pairs of sandals,” he laughs. Rob would carry the business on, supplying a shop in Raglan before setting up workshops and shops around Hamilton and finally moving to Raglan in 1982. Still in the workshop after 50 years, Rob is looking forward to stepping back and letting the next generation get on the tools. Son Ben is moving back to work at Soul Shoes from Melbourne where he did a bespoke shoe making course before becoming a tutor and setting up his own workshop. Soul Shoes is a family affair; daughter Jessie makes the leather bags and partner Marie de Jong is the brains behind the business. It was Soul Shoes that brought Rob and Marie together. “I was over in Perth, selling his shoes in the Freemantle markets in the 90s,” she says. By the early 2000s, they had outlets in Mt Maunganui, Hamilton, Napier and Wellington. And while they only have the Raglan Wharf store now, they still sell just as many shoes. “It was a bit of a gamble moving out of town and there was nothing else down here at the wharf but it was the best move we ever made,” Rob says. They sell more bags and belts than shoes these days, which takes the pressure off Rob who is currently the only one making shoes in the workshop. But with Ben back soon to lend a hand, Rob and Marie are bringing back some old favourites that haven’t been available for a while. Inside word for fans of Soul Shoes is the mushroom and kung fu shoes and the Raglan boots will be back in stock. “There’ll be great excitement about that,” Rob says. Rob and Marie reckon Soul Shoes’ success and longevity boils down to a reputation for quality products, unique designs, adherence to slow fashion and good-old fashioned perseverance. “Rob has got amazing stickability, he really has,” Marie says. “A combination of that, and the fact that my dad came into my first shop and said I’d never last,” he laughs.

Bottom image: “Making shoes with Mike Bassick at Hills Rd, back when I still had hair,” said Rob. Raglan Summer Holiday Guide | 25

RAGLAN SEWING SERVICE Repairs, Alterations & Soft Furnishings

L

ocal resident Gila Cohen chats about Raglan Sewing Service and her mission to save clothes from landfill, one garment at a time!

Nestled away in the heart of Raglan West is a bustling sewing workshop, a hive of activity, housing an array of industrial sewing machines, hole punches, threads and fabric. Gila Cohen, the spirited force behind Raglan Sewing Service, chuckles as she mentions, “People always come in here wide-eyed, amazed at how much stuff I have in here!” With over 30 years of sewing experience, Gila is a seasoned expert, having studied industrial sewing in her 20s, before moving to Sydney to train in Theatre costume manufacturing and shoemaking. This diverse creative background has been instrumental in helping Gila think outside the box, and she happily accepts projects that other seamstresses would turn away. The genesis of Raglan Sewing Service was rooted in a dream—to create a space that met the needs of the local community. From clothing repair and alterations to unique custom orders, Gila’s offerings continue to expand, now encompassing curtain hemming, indoor and outdoor squab and cushion covers, leather and canvas repairs, zipper replacements, and blind hemming. “I have an amazing new supplier of outdoor fabrics and marine fabrics, so now I can make custom covers for outdoor furniture, marine squabs, bikes, BBQs... You name it!” Gila’s enthusiasm and love for her work are palpable, matched only by her desire to find the best solution for each customer’s unique needs. When asked about her most unusual request, she doesn’t hesitate before sharing, “Snuggle sacks for the guinea pigs at the kindergarten!” She chuckles, “I never knew they were a thing!” Passionate about sustainability, Gila emphasizes the importance of clothing repair in an era dominated by fast fashion and throw away mentality. “Clothing holds stories of the times it has been worn, places it’s been, and through the memories they hold, they become something to be treasured. Things may become faded, torn or have seen better days, but if something can be saved from landfill and there’s life left in it, it’s worth saving.”

TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH With Ruby Gibbs from The Mental Health Toolbox

taking five minutes to go and put your feet in the water to shake you out of a mood.

In my second year of doing this series, I have felt even more connected to our community and the people willing to share themselves with me and you. I feel grateful that I get to have conversations about the hard parts of life and to pass on the stories and wisdom that is handed to me. I know right now it feels hard to be a human. I have been feeling incredibly helpless. My empathy bucket feels like it is being drained faster than ever. But what keeps me going is knowing that we are all just trying to get through our days on this little speck of dust that we live on. If we can do that with kindness, honesty and community, then I think we will be okay. I don’t have all the answers but what I am trying to do for myself right now is take it back to basics. This summer, as we get busier and the population of our little village swells, I am taking it slow, putting my feet in the water, nourishing my body and my relationships, and making time for myself.

Another theme running through the interviews was to tackle your baggage head on, to sit with those uncomfortable feelings. It is not easy to honestly reflect with yourself. Sometimes we are so blind to our own patterns and habits that to sit down and deeply consider the way they impact our lives is really scary! Bevan passed on a mantra from his therapist; “first truth, then peace.” I think this is relatable to everyone’s life. As Bevan said; he is the best he’s ever been because he’s done the work. There were so many gems in this years’ interviews. A mantra that I have taken on as my own came from Ange; “ease and grace and push on through.’ Jo says to remember that the tide goes in and the tide goes out. Kaleb is trying to be softer, more open minded, more patient. Nicole reminded us that paradox is our friend and not everything has to be black and white. Bevan spoke of healthy selfishness and how to look after yourself first.

Reading back over the interviews from the past year, I was struck by everyone’s priority of these basic needs. Taking the time out of our lives everyday to create some routine and balance, whether it be making your bed in the morning, as Mike does, or creating your own weekly diary to keep an eye on your life, as Nicole explained, can have a big impact on your mental health. The Whare Tapa Whā that Johnny spoke of is an easy way to categorize these basic needs. Are we looking after our wairua (spirit), hinengaro (mind), tinana (body) and whānau (family/social)? Check in with these needs every day. It could be as simple as

A quote that I heard in a podcast recently has stuck with me; “You can’t think your way into acting differently but you can act your way into thinking differently.” A lot of the interviews I did this year spoke about going through difficult periods in life but finding the way through the darkness. This can start by taking things one day at a time and changing the way we act. Johnny said he likes to get up and get amongst it. Nicole told us how she learned to change the story, you just have to reframe it. It may feel like faking it at first but acting your way into thinking differently can lead to new, healthier behaviours.

Lastly, I am deeply grateful to Jo Sweeney, Mike Edmonds, Nicole Hancock, Kaleb Kingi, Ange Hardy, Bevan Lockwood and Johnny Rickard for speaking with me. Your vulnerability, time and courage is appreciated. It isn’t easy to share your thoughts in this public forum but I know each one of you spoke to me in the hopes that sharing your journey would, in turn, help someone else. I hope this column is opening up conversations with yourself and the people around you. I hope it can act as a reminder that we all go through hard periods in our lives, but it is how we consciously move through those periods with kindness, grace and resilience that matters.

MAGAZINE ISSUE SEPTEMBER 2020

Earlier this month I attended the Hīkoi for Hauora which was organised by Raglan Naturally and Raglan Area School. We walked around the three bridges then came together at the school for a performance by Rob Mokaraka. Rob’s story about his suicide attempt and journey afterwards was eyeopening, vulnerable, funny, tragic and inspiring but what stayed with me was hearing members of our community speak up at the wānanga that followed. People spoke about their own battles and I was touched by the truths they shared and the tears they cried. These conversations can change the way we view our struggles and how we move through them. I feel grateful to be a part of a community that is prioritising this kōrero and doing it with so much awhi and aroha.

RAGLAN BOTANICALS Aromatherapy & Therapeutic Essential Oils - Handmade in Raglan

I

have always been interested in health and wellbeing. My journey in Aromatherapy began in 2017 when I started to learn about Essential Oils and I became a qualified Aromatherapist in 2020. Knowing the therapeutic benefits of Essential Oils I have created my own skincare products. What a gift! It was not only a satisfying experience to make my own products but it gave me the freedom to be creative with essential oils, carrier oils, waxes and butters. I understand that what I put on my skin is absorbed in my body. I have made a conscious choice to use skin-friendly, skinsafe products and mostly organic.

At Raglan Botanicals I choose the ingredients knowing exactly the benefits they bring into the skin. I have done research as part of my qualifications and it’s ongoing for each of my products. I am sourcing, as available, organic ingredients and eco-friendly packaging. Raglan Botanicals now has a space in MADE Markets in Hamilton East, pop in and say HI! P:

RAGLAN PHYSIOTHERAPY, PILATES & ACUPUNCTURE A Local & Experienced team with a modern approach to Rehabilitation

R

aglan Physiotherapy, Pilates & Acupuncture is located in the Raglan Wellness hub in the buzzing Raglan township. The Wellness hub is home to a talented group of Allied health practitioners including Osteopathy, Podiatry and Chiropractic who we coordinate with regularly to achieve optimal multidisciplinary client-centered care.

As our name suggests Pilates and Acupuncture are a large part of what we do here at the clinic. We are extremely lucky to have such a talented group of experienced Physios and therapists who have undergone various and lengthy post graduate training to offer amazing services to our community. We have Elena offering TCM and Tess and Sam offering Westernstyle Acupuncture. The other special service we offer is Cosmetic Acupuncture which is very unique to Raglan. Our Physios are both Mat and Reformer Pilates trained

offering the community 1:1, small rehab group and larger group sessions. This is available to many clients under ACC. We have a spacious area dedicated to our rehabilitation sessions. Our Physio Sam is really leading the way in the blood flow restriction side of training, an amazing rehab tool especially for those with injuries, arthritic joints or for pre and post-op strengthening. It is in this rehab space that Sam can be found, strapping on the BFR bands and assisting our clients to achieve greater muscle hypertrophy and strength gains with minimal loads. After undertaking her Masters degree a decade ago, Tess went on to become a Pelvic health Physiotherapist. She offers consultations for both Men’s and Women’s Pelvic health and can register and treat maternal birth injuries, now covered by ACC. We work far and wide with our Physios, JP and Chloe, seeing clients in the clinic and out in the community. JP

is looking after our older adults at the local rest home and Chloe can be found completing the rehabilitation for clients under our ACC funded contracts. If you have an active ACC claim and require a bit more than “the usual” care, get in touch to see if you are eligible for this service. We are here for you all over the Christmas and New Year period, closing only for stat days. Contact our administrative legend, Simone if you would like to book an appointment. NAVIGATING PUBLIC HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENTS DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON IN NEW ZEALAND by Jaime Lomas, Director and Employment Law Specialist, DTI Lawyers

T

he festive season is a time for celebration, reflection, and spending quality time with family and friends. As the Christmas holiday approaches, it’s important for both employers and employees to be aware of public holiday entitlements to ensure a fair and enjoyable experience for everyone. Public holidays are regulated by the Holidays Act 2003, and understanding your rights and responsibilities is crucial during this period.

What are the public holidays over Christmas? During the Christmas season, several public holidays are observed. These include Christmas Day (25th December), Boxing Day (26th December), New Year’s Day (1st January), and the day after New Year’s Day (2nd January). If any of these days fall on a weekend, the following Monday (or Tuesday) is typically observed as a substitute holiday. What are employees entitled to? • Paid Public Holiday: Employees are entitled to a paid public holiday if the public holiday falls on a day that would otherwise be a working day. For example, if Christmas Day falls on a day the employee would have ordinarily worked, they have the right to be paid for that day, even if they are not required to work. • Public Holidays on a Weekend: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and 2 January are “Mondayised” if these fall on a weekend. Employees who would normally work on that Monday or Tuesday are entitled to a paid day off or an alternative day off if required to work. For employers who are operational on the weekend and on the Monday, if an employee works on both the actual holiday and the substitute holiday, they will only be entitled to public holiday benefits for one of those days. • Working on a Public Holiday: If due to the nature of the employer’s business, employees may be required to work on a public holiday to

meet ongoing operational requirements. Employees who are required to work on a public holiday will be entitled to payment of time and a half and will receive a day in lieu. An employer can only require an employee to work on a public holiday if it is a day they would normally work. • Part-Time and Casual Employees: Part-time employees are also entitled to public holiday entitlements if the public holiday falls on a day they would typically work. The payment is calculated based on the greater of the employee’s average daily pay over the seven days leading up to the public holiday or relevant daily pay for that day. Due to the nature of casual employees being ‘ad hoc’, they would not ordinarily have days they would “typically work” and would not be entitled to paid public holidays. If a casual employee is required to work on a public holiday, they will be entitled to payment at time and one half but

would not normally be entitled to a day in lieu. However, it is important that possible patterns of work are identified, as in some cases a casual employee might be entitled to paid public holidays if there is an established pattern of work. • Communication and Planning: To ensure a smooth holiday season, it is crucial for employers to communicate with their staff regarding holiday plans and entitlements well in advance. Clear communication helps manage expectations and allows both parties to make necessary arrangements. The Christmas season is a time for joy, rest and relaxation. By understanding and ensuring compliance with legal obligations around holiday entitlements, both employers and employees can contribute to a positive work environment during the festive period. Open communication and proactive planning will go a long way in ensuring that everyone can enjoy the holidays with peace of mind.

NAVIGATING LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR PROPERTY OWNERS IN NEW ZEALAND DURING SUMMER by Hayley Willers, Director

A

s summer unfolds in New Zealand, property owners may find themselves contemplating various avenues to make the most of their real estate assets amid economic uncertainties. Beyond the potential for financial gains, it’s crucial to be aware of the legal aspects associated with different property-related activities. In this article, we’ll delve into legal considerations for property owners, covering aspects such as strategic property investments, compliance with local regulations, asset protection, contractual clarity, health and safety, banking relationships, insurance, and tax implications. Strategic Property Investments: Before considering short-term or long-term rentals, property owners should be mindful of local regulations and zoning laws. While renting out your property can be a lucrative venture, understanding the legal landscape, including any restrictions imposed by local councils, is essential to avoid legal complications. Navigating Local Regulations: Local councils regulate various aspects of property usage, especially when it comes to short-term rentals. It’s imperative to be aware of and comply with local regulations and zoning laws. Understanding these requirements can help property owners avoid potential legal issues and ensure a smooth operation.

42 | Raglan Summer Holiday Guide

Asset Protection and Planning: Reviewing asset protection strategies during the summer months is a prudent step. Legal professionals can assist in creating comprehensive plans to safeguard properties and investments from unforeseen challenges, providing a robust legal framework for long-term financial security. Contractual Clarity: Engaging with rental platforms necessitates careful consideration of contractual agreements. Clear and legally sound contracts are crucial to protect the rights of property owners and maintain a transparent relationship with service providers. Legal advice ensures that contracts are in compliance with applicable laws. Health and Safety Compliance: For property owners venturing into shortterm rentals, compliance with health and safety regulations is paramount. Understanding and adhering to the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 is essential to create a safe environment for property workers and guests, reducing the risk of legal liabilities. Banking Harmony: Property owners should communicate with their banks when contemplating property-related activities. Some transactions, such as refinancing, may require bank consent. Ensuring a harmonious relationship with the bank and obtaining necessary consents can help prevent legal complications.

Tailored Insurance Solutions: Property owners should notify their insurers of any changes in property usage. Adjusting insurance policies to cover summer rental activities is crucial for comprehensive protection against potential liabilities. Legal professionals can assist in ensuring that insurance coverage aligns with property activities. Tax Considerations: There are potential tax implications associated with property rentals. Seeking advice from accountants and financial advisers can help property owners navigate the complexities of tax laws, ensuring compliance and optimizing their financial position.

In addition to these considerations, property owners contemplating refinancing, selling, or purchasing property should seek legal advice to navigate the intricacies of these transactions. Legal professionals can provide valuable insights to ensure a smooth and legally sound process. As property owners explore the potential of their assets this summer, being well-informed about the legal aspects is key to making informed decisions and mitigating potential risks. Consultation with legal professionals can provide the necessary guidance to navigate the legal landscape and optimize the benefits of property ownership during these times

HIT THE BEACH BUT MIND THE DUNES with Coastcare Waikato

RAGLAN FILM FESTIVAL EARLY BIRD ENTRY and the winner is...

Students from Wesley Primary School in Auckland helped plant 2700 kōwhangatara/spinifex and pīngao native grasses in 2023.

W

hāingaroa/Raglan’s beaches and inner harbour have experienced considerable coastal erosion in the past year.

To help dunes self repair, Coastcare Waikato plants native dune plants kōwhangatara (Spinifex sericeus) and pīngao (Ficinia spiralis) which trap wind-blown sand, thereby building a natural buffer against the volatile combination of storms and king tides. This past year, volunteers have helped plant more than 6000 native plants in the fore and back dune areas along the harbour and ocean beach. Without kōwhangatara and pīngao, dunes will not build forward and land will be continually lost to the sea. And while these plants are tough enough to support the natural cycles of erosion and accretion, they’re also very fragile, so it’s very important that we all do our bit by keeping off the dunes. Walking through, playing on, and sliding down the dunes can kill even well-established plants. The Coastcare Waikato programme aims to protect and restore the region’s precious coastal areas. There

are community Coastcare groups working at about 30 beaches across the region. The Whaingaroa/Raglan Coastcare group, a collaboration between Waikato Regional Council, Waikato District Council and Tainui hapū, has been active since 2003 following severe erosion of the coastline near the harbour entrance that threatened the developed area. A healthy spinifex dune system has been reestablished west of the car park on Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive, but there are still parts of the Whāingaroa coast where dunes are quite degraded and will be the focus of efforts in the years to come. Beach accessways have been vastly improved over the years and help to minimise the trampling of native plant species in those areas but the dunes along the main beach remain vulnerable to foot traffic. Please help us protect our special coastal places by leaving vehicles in car parks, sticking to tracks and staying off the dunes this summer.

Film Festival Project Leader Karla Rix-Trott and Adriana Neild-Cooksley

F

riday 1st December was the official date for the Raglan Film Festival entries for Tamariki and Rangatahi to submit their film entry to be in the running for the early bird cash prize of $50. A total of 9 films were eligible for the $50 prize draw. (Initial expressions of interest closed 27 October with 40 film entry submissions received - 15 Tamariki, 15 Rangatahi and 10 in the open categories.) Congratulations to winner of the $50 cash prize Adriana Neild-Cooksley, from Raglan Area School with her short experimental film titled ‘Fishes’, a cute tik-tok style film made with paper creations. Adriana’s film is part of a collective with support crew Ngahina Hounuku-Paekau. Teacher Briar Heinrich who has been providing support to RAS students says “It’s great that this little film, even though its short and sweet, won the early bird prize draw”. If you want to become a film festival sponsor with all funds going directly towards prizes at the Raglan Film Festival Red Carpet Awards Ceremony Saturday 25th May, get in touch with us, we’d love to hear from you. Finally, to all new, budding and experienced film makers - keep the film creativity flowing over the summer period ready for the next deadline Friday 2nd February 2024 for further online entries and Friday 1st March for final film submission. We can’t wait to see your stories come alive on the big screen. See website raglanfilmfestival.co.nz and social media for further information, and to become a film festival sponsor please email jacqueline@ raglanartscentre.co.nz

Kōwhangatara/spinifex helps trap sand and build dunes seaward. Please help protect these plants so they can do their job by keeping off the dunes.

BARBARA KURIGER MP FOR TARANAKI-KING COUNTRY End of Year Message to the Community

W

e are rapidly heading towards the end of 2023. It has been a massive year politically, but also in many ways a difficult year for New Zealanders with cyclones and the cost of living as a follow up from our experience as a country from Covid 19.

I want to thank everyone for the support for myself. It makes no difference to me whether you voted for me, my office team and I are available to answer your queries and take care of your needs related to Government departments. After the formation of the new Coalition Government, Parliament has now started. It is a real honour for me to have been appointed the Deputy Speaker. This is a role which I know I will truly value as someone who has a good rapport across the House and someone who appreciates free flowing debate where all views are able to be heard.

In my recent visits to Raglan, I remain ever proud of the work that you are collectively doing in the environmental space. You are leaders in the field, literally. The rest of the country has been inspired by and learned from Whaingaroa. Your re-use, re-cycle, re-purpose mode of operating is providing many answers for other communities. I am inspired too by the health forums which are taking place at Marae around the area. It is wonderful to see so many services able to be offered. For regional and rural New Zealand, these health services would not be accessible to many people if everyone had to travel to Hamilton and would never be all available on one day. I wish you all the best for 2024. I hope it is a wonderful year for every one of you. I look forward to being invited to and seeing you at several of your events.
