To   the  Editor:  Daffodil  Day  Thank  You  On  behalf  of  the  Waikato/ Bay  of  Plenty  Division  of  the  Cancer  Society  I  wish  to  thank  the  Raglan  community  for  their  immense  support  of  Daffodil  Day  2012.   We  are  pleased  to  announce  another  successful  result  with  over  $630,000  being  raised  for  the  region,  a  wonderful  result  due  to  the  generosity  and  support  of  people  in  this  community.  I  would  also  like  to  extend  a  huge  thank  you  to  the  volunteers  who  gave  their  time  to  support  our  appeal;͞  we  simply  could  not  have  done  it  without  you.  As  the  Cancer  Society  receives  no  direct  government  funding,  we  are  heavily  reliant  on  donations  and  fundraising  activities,  such  as  Daffodil  Day,  to  continue  our  community  work.   Donations  from  daffodil  day  are  used  for  supportive  care  for  cancer  patients,  their  carers,  whanau  and  friends,  fund  cancer  research  and  provide  the  public  with  information  on  the  ways  to  reduce  the  risk  of  cancer  through  a  smoke  free,  sun  smart,  healthy  lifestyle.   Judy  Gould,  Chief  Executiv,  Cancer  Society  Waikato

Dear  Editor, Is  it  no  longer  possible  to  buy  low-sugar  Muesli  in  Raglan? For  many  years  Chantal  â€œNatural  Swiss  Bircher  Muesliâ€?  with  5.8g  sugar  per  100g  was  on  almost  permanent  â€œManager’s  Specialâ€?  at  Four  Square.  More  recently  there  was  a  price  increase  but  a  few  weeks  before  the  switch  to  Supervalue  it  disappeared  and  it  has  not  re-appeared.  It  also  used  to  be  available  at  the  Herbal  Dispensary,  along  with  other  Chantal  Mueslis  but  it  is  no  longer  stocked. A  near  substitute  is  Nicola’s  Organics  â€œOrganic  Muesli:  unsweetenedâ€?  with  7.6g  sugar  per  100g.  But  I  have  only  found  this  at  Countdowns  in  Hamilton,  and  not  in  Raglan. Consumer  Institute  recently  ran  a  comparison  on  many  varieties  of  muesli  and  pointed  out  the  very  high  levels  of  sugar  in  most,  with  over  20g  per  100g  in  most.  Whatever  happened  to  the  old  days  when  consumers  were  able  to  add  their  own  sugar  to  an  unsweetened  product  according  to  taste?  It  seems  that  only  Weet-Bix  remains  in  this  class. Many  people  want  or  need  to  reduce  the  sugar  in  their  diet  so  I  do  think  that  they  should  be  given  the  chance  to  do  that  at  breakfast  time!  Sincerely,      Murray  Jorgensen,  Raglan

Opinion: Rational thinking by Ian McKissack

Raglan Junior Rugby wrapup It’s  hard  to  believe  that  the  along  with  trainings  on  top  and  Nicolas  Jeffcoat  who  were  Junior  Rugby  Season  is  over  of  their  club  commitments.  selected  for  the  Gywnn  Shield  already,  and  it  is  even  harder  However  their  efforts  have  and  Kyden  Waitere  for  the Â

Our  John  Banks  is  a  strange  fellow.  Despite  his  successes  in  various  forms  of  public  life  he  occasionally  appears  to  be  not  too  bright.  For  instance  his  attempt  to  convince  us  that  he  didn’t  know  about  Kim  Dotcom’s  contribution  to  his  mayoral  election  fund.  But  my  main  doubt  about  Bank’s  wisdom  is  his  recent  statement  that  he  believes  that  the  world  is  only  6,000  years  old.  Such  a  belief  can  only  be  to  uphold  the  literal  truth  of  the  Old  Testament.  In  many  parts  of  the  U.S.  this  would  not  be  unusual.  To  convince  the  faithful  there  is  a  â€˜museum’  in  Kentucky  which  aims  to  encourage  this  Book  of  Genesis  view  of  our  origins.  It  includes  a  picture  of  a  man  coexisting  with  a  dinosaur.  This  form  of  religious  belief  rejects  the  modern  evolutionary  view  WKDW GLQRVDXUV ZHUH ZHOO JRQH EHIRUH WKH ÂżUVW recognisable  human  ancestor  appeared. SANDS OF TIME: Continuing our occasional history series, we look this week at the Raglan & Kawhia Light Railway. By John Lawson Raglan  might  have  been  a  very  different  town  if  the  railway  proposals  of  a  century  ago  had  been  built.  On  3  September  1912  at  a  Raglan  Chamber  of  Commerce  meeting  in  the  Town  Hall,  60  settlers  asked  the  government  to  suspend  its  proposed  railway  from  Pukemiro  (at  the  end  of  WKH OLQH IURP +XQWO\ WR 5DJODQ until  a  Frankton  to  Raglan  route  was  surveyed.  In  1910  the  Prime  Minister  had  also  announced  a  proposed  25  mile,  £250,000  line  from  Ngaruawahia  to  Raglan  Harbour. In  1920  the  Hamilton,  Raglan  and  Kawhia  Light  Railway  Board  was  set  up  with  support  from  the  West  Coast  Railway  League  and  powers  to  borrow  money  and  levy  rates.  A  £150,000  loan  was  about  to  be  raised  for  construction  of  80  miles  of  2  foot  gauge  light  railway  via  Karamu,  a  10  chain  tunnel  into  the  Waitetuna  valley  and  Te  Uku  VHH DSSUR[LPDWH URXWH RQ PDS when  Gordon  Coates  (Minister  of  Public  Works  1923-25  and  Prime  0LQLVWHU SURPLVHG WR seal  the  main  road  if  the  railway  was  dropped.  The  sealed  road  to  Raglan  was  completed  in  the  1960s,  and  Kawhia’s  sealed  road  about  40  years  after  the  promise. Hamilton  Chamber  of Â

Commerce  envisaged  that  they’d,  â€œhave  the  choice  of  two  harbours,  each  within  approximately  35  miles.  Raglan  harbour  is  navigable  for  fair-sized  steamers,  and  when  the  proposed  deepening  improvements  at  the  bar  are  carried  out,  large  vessels  will  be  able  to  come  alongside  the  splendid  new  wharf  now  rapidly Â

approaching  completion.  .  .  It  was  also  considered  that  freezing  works  would  be  erected  on  the  harboursâ€?. But  the  prospects  of  Raglan  becoming  a  smokestack  town  weren’t  ended  then.  It  was  as  late  as  the  1960s  that  the  last  suggestion  of  a  railway  was  revived.  In  a  feasibility  study  of Â

ironsand  resources,  the  suggestion  of  an  extension  from  Pukemiro  was  revived  to  bring  coal  to  the  iron  and  limestone.  Fortunately  the  decision  was  made  to  site  the  new  steelmill  at  Glenbrook  and  the  harbour  and  the  ironsand  dunes  to  the  north  of  it  remained  without  the  drift  of  smoke.  How  different  Raglan  might  have  been!
