Should you wish to aquire any images from this week’s Chronicle -â€? please contact us on 825 7076 or email your request to info@raglanchronicle.co.nz To  the  Editor, After  the  meet  the  candidates  meeting  a  couple  of  weeks  ago  and  reading  Chris  Leuthard's  letter  I  too  wish  to  add  my  support  for  Clint  Baddeley  in  the  up  coming  election. Whilst  there  is  a  mood  for  change  in  some  quarters  I  feel  that  knowing  and  having  worked  alongside  Clint  for  6  years  (as  Community  Board  Chair),  that  no  one  will  work  as  hard  for  Raglan  as  Clint  does  and  will.   The  past  9  years  has  proven  that  he  has  no  personal  agendas  and  his  track  record  of  achievements  for  our  town  is  better  than  any  other  Councillor  in  the  district. As  far  as  the  mayoral  election  is  concerned  I  feel  that  Alan  Sanson  is  by  far  the  best  canditate  and  his  track  record  for  the  last  term  shows  him  to  be  a  man  of  his  word  and  action. Regards Peter  Storey,  Raglan

To  the  Editor, Thank  you  for  a  well  balanced  LLB. PG Dip Spts Mgt. Notary Public report  on  last  week's  'meet  the  Local lawyer for Raglan’s legal needs candidates'.  I'd  just  like  to  correct  the  5DJODQ RIĂ€FH implication  that  I  asked  for  a  quarter  Mondays 9am - 4pm hourly  bus  service.  You  correctly  at Dr Ellisons surgery reported  Cr  Clint  Baddeley's  response,  31 Wallis Street Raglan but  he  hadn't  listened  to  the  question.  It  or by appointment was,  "Should  Raglan  have  more  than  WeatherMap - New Zealand weather forecasts (PDLO rhys@ellisonlaw.co.nz 3  buses  a  day?"  The  Chronicle  has  RU SKRQH 3 0 reported  overcrowding  on  the  existing  services,  though  only  a  tiny  proportion  +DPLOWRQ 2IĂ€FH 7ULVWUDP 6WUHHW , 32 %R[ , ) of  travellers  use  them.

Despite  that,  it  was  announced  on  Friday  that  Huntly  is  getting  more  buses,  but  not  Raglan.  Seemingly  more  evidence  that  our  councillor  isn't  listening. He  just  heard  the  start  of  the  TXHVWLRQ ZKHQ , VDLG WKDW WUDI¿F RQ SH23  is  equivalent  to  a  full  bus  every  15  minutes  (3,745  vehicles,  enough  WR ¿OO EXVHV D GD\ 1RW HYHU\RQH wants  to  use  a  bus,  but  in  2002  we  ran  a  survey  with  responses  from  about  10%  of  the  population  which  showed  that  a  half  hourly  bus  for  most  of  the  day  would  attract  enough  extra  fares  to  run  for  less  than  the  present  subsidy. Raglan's  28%  Green  vote,  Xtreme  Waste,  Harbour  Care,  Environment  Centre,  etc  indicate  we  live  in  a  community  where  more  than  average  numbers  want  to  avoid  adding  to  climate  change  and  many  more  don't  enjoy  the  cost  of  owning  a  car  (local  economic  consultancy,  Valuation  Technologies,  puts  the  total  at  $27m  a  year),  or  driving  into  the  sun. Yet  council  and  our  councillor  have  consistently  ignored  this  evidence.  Less  than  2%  of  council's  transport  budget  is  spent  on  buses  and  virtually  nothing  on  walking  and  cycling,  even  though  5%  of  ratepayers  don't  even  have  a  car. I  hope  they'll  improve  their  listening  http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla skills  and  hence  their  ability  to  better  represent  Raglan. Regards John  Lawson,  Raglan Weather Map

MY MISSING DOG It has now been one month since our beloved dog went missing in a thunder storm at Te Mata. I’m still asking for any information regarding his disappearance. If you know if he is dead or alive please contact me or even anonymously let me know. With the passage of time we are becoming less hopeful that he is still alive but the not knowing is taking a big toll on us. Someone out there must know what has happened to him or where he is.

Animal Health Column For Raglan People + their Pets

Microchip your pets! This  month  we  are  shining  the  spotlight  on  microchipping  pets. This  is  partly  due  to  the  huge  amount  stray  animals  that  turn  up  at  the  vet  clinic,  and  partly  due  to  a  misconception  some  people  have  about  the  relationship  between  the  vet  clinic,  the  council,  and  the  companion  animal  register. Let’s  start  with  the  basics-  all  dogs  are  legally  required  to  be  registered  and  microchipped  over  3  months  of  age,  but  farm  working  dogs  don’t  need  to  be  microchipped.  Dog  registration  is  handled  by  the  local  council,  and  microchipping  can  either  done  at  the  vet  clinic  or  by  the  council. When  a  dog  is  microchipped  by  the  vet  clinic,  the  number  is  entered  into  our  database,  which  is  only  accessible  by  other  Anexa  Animal  Health  clinics.  When  that  dog  is  registered,  the  microchip  number  is  then  also  added  into  the  council’s  national  dog  database,  which  is  nationwide  but  only  accessible  during  business  hours.  A  dog’s  microchip  number  can  also  be  registered  on  a  database  called  the  Companion  Animal  Register  with  or  without  a  council  registration,  for  a  small  fee,  and  is  accessible  24/7  to  registered  organisations  such  as  vet  clinics,  local  councils  and  SPCA’s  via  the  internet.  The  companion  animal  register  also  accepts  microchip  numbers  for  other  species-  cats,  birds,  reptiles  etc.  Every  year  we  have  a  huge  number  of  stray  cats  and  dogs  handed  in  to  us,  some  of  which  we  are  able  to  reunite  with  owners,  others  we  can’t,  so  we  rehome  them. Â

The  majority  of  strays  are  cats  and  kittens  which  unfortunately  are  not  governed  by  any  microchipping  or  UHJLVWUDWLRQ ODZV VR ÂżQGLQJ RZQHUV is  challenging  at  best We  recommend  all  pets  be  microchipped  and  registered  with  the  companion  animal  register  and/ or  the  council,  that  way  if  they  come  into  a  vet  clinic,  dog  pound,  or  SPCA  injured  or  stray  they  can  reunite  them  with  their  owners.  This  was  a  hard  pill  to  swallow  for  our  own  vet  clinics  head  nurse  Donna  who  recently  lost  her  dog  of  11years.  He  wasn’t  microchipped  as  the  law  was  brought  in  years  after  he  was  born.  Unless  he  turns  up  somewhere  still  wearing  his  collar  and  tags,  it  is  unlikely  they  will  ever  be  reunited.  Microchipping  such  an  easy  SURFHVV DQG WKH EHQHÂżWV GHÂżQLWHO\ outweigh  the  small  cost.  It’s  simple  and  virtually  pain  free  process.  The  chip  is  approx.  the  size  of  a  grain  of  rice  and  is  administered  via  a  syringe  and  needle  into  the  scruff  of  the  animal’s  neck.  For  most  animals  it  only  stings  a  little,  no  more  so  than  a  vaccination.

KEEP CALM AND Hello  Raglan I’m  seeking  your  support  to  continue  as  your  District  Councillor. Over  the  last  few  years,  I  have  played  a  leading  role  in  getting  important   SURMHFWV LGHQWLÂżHG DQG GHDOW ZLWK LQ Raglan  such  as  the  new  Museum  and  Information  Centre,  the  new  footbridge,  rebuilding  at  the  wharf  and  resealing  the  main  street  plus  much  more.

TV Takeback The government is offering a subsidy to recycle your old TV. It will cost you only $5 to recycle your TV at Xtreme Waste. for recycling are taken to national recycling facilities where they are taken apart. Components are recycled locally or sent to specialist facilities overseas.

We are encouraging everyone who has an old TV to take advantage of this offer to recycle your TV for a very low cost and through this respectful process.

All TVs will be sent to Auckland to have the phosphorus gas removed, the front glass screen removed for lead extraction, various internal components separated and sent for recycling and the external casing baled and recycled. This process is licensed as the most ethical TV recycling scheme in the Country.

The project is being run by RCN in partnership with the Community Recycling Network (CRN) with funding from the Ministry of Environment. Over 100,000 TVs have been recycled through the scheme in other parts of the Country.

Although many components from an old TV can be recycled, the value of the material that can be recovered is currently less than the cost of transport and recycling. In Raglan, TVs usually cost $14 each to recycle, so you can save $9 through the subsidy.

When you drop off your old TV you can nominate the Raglan Area School to win a technology package from Samsung. The more votes the greater their chance.
