DAVID KIMANI GRADUATE ARCHITECT | 8516 LANSDOWNE RD. HENRICO, VA 23229 - 3225

dkimani35@gmail.com Kenyan, born 27th August 1995 My work follows themes of reinvention, experimentation and conceptual metaphors. I look for relevant references and concepts that are challenging and completely unique, with the ultimate goal to translate them into buildings and environments that work, inspire people and transform communities. I explore all the possibilities and constraints through extensive research to create a new understanding towards a better design solution. Through experimental and playful articulation of design concepts, I create possible scenarios through interactive process of virtual modelling.

Hospitality

THE EXISTING ANALYSIS As the center of Indian Ocean Coastline continues to grow denser every year the demand for Hospitality facilities increases too. The existing main Tourist Hubs surrounding Mombasa CBD are overcrowded with human traffic and need relief. However, there are available sites for development and all require to be impacted by creative spaces. The goal of the studio is to experiment with a conscience of The Swahili Culture and Architectural character of the existing population.

PROJECT: MALINDI TOURIST TERMINAL & INFORMATION CENTRE LOCATION: MALINDI, KENYA DATE: OCTOBER 12, 2016 DURATION: 1 SEMESTER 4TH YEAR

THE NEW CONCEPT To shape and mold the design many experiments were done with different methods. The suitable concept alluded from the original Swahili courtyard which serve as a central hub in a household. The shell of the building had to become a thick envelope which connected to the Courtyard through internal created spaces and a circulation tube around the core. The facades are expansive and porous opening up the internal spaces to the surrounding environment. This offers a wide range of views which brings vibrancy to the site.

FUNCTIONAL LAYOUT The Tourist terminal houses a mixed range of spaces of various shapes and sizes to allow for maximal flexibility. The public spaces are on the lower levels separating the more intimate spaces upwards and towards the back. The offices accommodate necessary activities during transit and the hotel offers relaxation dwelling units with a view of the ocean. The restaurant offers Swahili delicacies and a view too. The courtyard hosts performances and cultural ceremonies.

Kikoy Restaurant Malindi (CBD)Town Swahili Rhetorism 154 m2 2016

The Kikoi restaurant is based on the theme of Swahili rhetorism and a sense of communal ownership. For the diverse materiality to the infusion of cultural elements like thee brackets at the entrance and the axiality on the flooring patterns, the restaurant tries to invoke the ever vibrant culture through the use of the Kikoi fabric as the major upholstery and the use of timber boarding on ceilings.
