CONSTRAINT AND FEAR EXPRESSED THROUGH SLANT WALLS.

AXIS OF MOVEMENT.

DURING THE FREEDOM STRUGGLE FOR THE INDEPENDECE OF INDIA, VARIOUS EVENTS LED TO THE FINAL GLORY OF FREEDOM FROM THE PAIN, WOUNDS, CHAOS AND DEPRESSION BY MANY GREAT FIGHTERS.

ABOUT THE BRIEF : THE PROGRAM AIMED AT DEVELOPING AN EXPERIENTIAL MUSEUM, THAT WOULD DEPICT A PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANT EVENT THAT HAD BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN THE ATTAINMENT OF THE “ INDIA INDEPENDENCE”. THE DESIGN HAD TO REVOLVE AROUND THE ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTION THAT ARCHIT WOULD PORTRAY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EVENTS IN THE DESIGN AND PROGRESS ITSELF INTO THE ULTIMATE EVENT OF “ INDIAN INDEPENDENCE ”, WHICH IS ALSO THE UNDERLYING PURPOSE OF THE PROPOSITION OF THE BRIEF.

ABOUT THE PROSPOSAL : THE EXPERIENTIAL MUSEUM WAS DESIGNED TO HIGHLIGHT THE DESTRUCTIVE EVENT “QISSA KHAWANI BAZAAR MASSACRE ( 23RD APRIL, 1930 AT PESHAWAR )” IN WHICH NEARLY 700 PEOPLE SACRIFICED THEIR LIFES FOR THE INDIA’S FREEDOM AND DIGNITY. THE DESIGN INITIATED BY REALISING THE EMOTIONS OBSERVED IN THE COURSE OF THE EVENT AND EXPRESSING THEM THROUGH THE LANGUAGE OF ARCHITECTURE.

“ WHEN THOSE IN FRONT FELL DOWN WOUNDED, THOSE IN BEHIND CAME FORWARD WITH THEIR CHEST BARED AND EXPOSED THEMSELVES TO THE FIRE. SOME PEOPLE GOT 21 BULLETS WOUNDS IN THEIR BODY, ALL SACRIFICED IN BRAVERY, NON-VIOLENCE AND FIRM FOR INDIA’S FREEDOM.”

THE ONLY MENTION OF DEVE STREET IS WHEN IT IS TALKING ABOUT THE URBAN VILLAGES AND EVEN THEN, IT TALKS ABOUT THE CODES FOR ROAD WIDENING. AUTOMOBILE, FOR GOOD OR FOR WORSE, WHAT ABOUT PEDESTRIANS? OF COURSE THE INTENTION IS NOT TO BE NOSTALGIC OF STREET BUT TO RECONSIDER ITS POTENTIAL AND MAKE SOME ROOM WITHIN THE DCR TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE STREETS AGAIN WHERE NEEDED.

THE NON-TYPE :

IF TYPE IS ABOUT TYPICALITY AND HENCE REPEATABLE BY NATURE THEN, THEN ITS OPPOSITE ARE THOSE SINGULAR TYPES THAT HAVE EMERGED OUT OF VERY SPECIFIC SITUATIONS IN THE CITY WHICH CAN BE REFERRED, FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD, REFERRE NON-TYPES. OFTEN, THE NON-TYPES APPEAR TO TRANSGRESS LAW, EVEN UNAWARE OR IGNORANT ABOUT THE PRESENCE OF THE LAW. THEY ARE PURE INTENTIONS AND NOT OFTENWELL-CONSTRUCTED IDEAS. FOR A TYPE TO BE TYPICAL NOT ONLY DOES IT NEED A BASE IDEA IT ALSO REQUIRES THAT IDEA IS REPEATABLE. IN OTHER WORDS, THE IDEA NEEDS TO BE, PERHAPS NOT ALWAYS, NEUTRAL FOR ITS PROLIFERATION. AS MUCH AS IT IS A SEARCH FOR SUCH NON-TYPES IN THE MUMBAI CITY, IT IS ALSO A SEARCH TO FIND WAYS TO LEARN FROM THE NON-TYPES AND FIND WAYS TO DERIVE IDEAS TO CREATE, (RE)CODE, NEW TYPES FOR THE CITY OF MUMBAI. AN IMMORTAL GLEAM. TYPE | COMPETITION AREA | TO DESIGN A SUN PAVILION ( SOORYA MANDIR) LOCATION | MUMBAI

Soorya, beyond its existence as a ball of fire in its material life, has played a paramount role in the core’s of art, culture and spirituality since the existence of mankind. It is the antithesis to darkness and the presence of evil. A symbol of virtue and truth which was shared by most ancient cultures including the ones in India. The Proposal will embrace the naturality of Soorya, which is the source of all light, and all who are able to see, may see the Soorya and its eternal power, and those who can’t, may yet feel his warmth and presence. The eternal Soorya, the source of all wisdom, and those whose spiritual senses have awakened the life will see that Soorya, and be conscious of its existence by the sheer architecture of light,space and its experience. The Soorya mandir being the end phase of the journey, will be an answer to all the existence of nature around it by transiting one’s experience from the trail to culminating to a deeper understanding for the human and it'is reason for coexistence with the Soorya. .14

THE NOTION OF SCHOOLS WITHOUT CLASSROOMS COULD BE A MODERN DAY GIMMICK WHICH CHALLENGES NOT ONLY THE PHYSICAL PRESENCE OF ARCHITECTURE BUT THE VERY FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE OF TUTOR-LEARNER RELATIONSHIP. THE ARCHITECTURE SHOULD NOT ONLY SUPPORT THE SYSTEM OF EDUCATION BUT ALSO STRENGTHEN THE ROOTS OF CREATIVITY, COGNITIVE EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT. IT SHOULD OPEN UP WINDOWS TO NEW INNOVATIVE WAYS, METHODS OF LEARNING AND BE IN STATE OF CONSTANT GROWTH ADDING TO INDIVIDUAL’S ONTOGENESIS. THE PROBLEM NEVER REALLY EXISTED IN THE CONCEPTS OF ENCLOSED LEARNING SPACES LIKE CLASSROOMS BUT GREW AND BRED IN THE METHODOLOGY OF MAINSTREAM EDUCATION SYSTEM AND HAS BEEN GENERATING A DIS-INTEREST TO ATTEND THE SCHOOL AND MAKING LEARNINGS A DULL ACTIVITY.
