George Tooke in Focus—Binalong Brahmans Bos Indicus The Waldren Construction Brahmans return to the George Tooke Shield on Saturday after an absence of two years. Saturday’s clash will be against old rivals the Harden Hawks and Binalong are well primed for the occasion. Brahmans play their return match against Harden in the final round of the season on August 12, 2017. George Tooke Shield appears to have strengthened since Binalong secured their Grand Final victory in September 2014, with the inclusion of several new teams. Notable of these is the North Canberra Bears who are the current premiers. The exact make-up of teams for 2017 is only indicated by trial matches. But the word is out that Crookwell’s Green Devils will be strong opponents. “We started training early to get fitness up and I am confident that our squad can match it with the rest of the competition,” said newly appointed Brahmans coach, Jason Brown. The early start to pre-season appears to be vindicated with Binalong recording convincing wins against both Gunning and the Grizzlies’ in trial matches, conceding just a try in each game. Nevertheless, next Saturday’s opening match will not be an easy affair at McLean Oval against former Brahman, Matt McLay’s Hawks. McLay is a clever and talented operator and unforced errors will be a key to this game. The Binalong Brahmans’ defence has been a feature of the team’s performance in trial matches during 2017. Boomanulla played Canowindra Tigers who are a Woodbridge Cup team in a 2017 trial match and couldn’t get a win there, Canowindra are yet to win a game in that competition. So Bungendore Tigers and North Canberra Bears are unknown quantities. A most interesting Rugby League season awaits us with uncertainty everywhere. The Brahmans play the Bears at Binalong in round 2 on April 29th.

Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade - Round 3 Preview By James Coman Belconnen United Sharks v Woden Valley Rams, 3pm Saturday at O’Connor Oval The Belconnen Sharks will be looking bounce back after two big losses to record their first win of the season when they take on the Woden Valley Rams. Their opponents, the Woden Valley Rams, will be fresh having enjoyed the bye after a tough opening match of the season where they recorded a hard fought one point win. Coming off the back of a 48 point loss to the Yass Magpies, Sharks coach, Scott Logan knows his team need to hold onto the football. “We want to hold the ball as long as we can and get an even possession which will help us in terms of not needing to do too much defence,” Scott said. “We just need to control the ball first and look after what we can from our end.” West Belconnen Warriors v Yass Magpies, 3pm Saturday at Raiders Belconnen The Yass Magpies will be looking to continue their winning ways against the West Belconnen Warriors on Saturday after a big win last week. The Magpies will be full of confidence after cruising past the Belconnen Sharks 58-10 and will be looking to claim victory over another Belconnen based team. After having the bye in round one, the Magpies have played one less game than the Warriors, meaning the defending champions have had an extra game to work on their partnerships and find their rhythm. The Warriors have had an up and down start to the season. Falling short to the Bulls in round one before notching up a big win over the Goulburn Bulldogs last week.

Although West Belconnen Coach Troy Thompson knows his team isn’t as big as the Magpies physically, he is confident of a win. “They have big bodies in the back row, centres and also in the middle,” Thompson said. “We are probably one of the smallest teams, but if we can defend well, hold the footy and turn them around, we should be able to go alright.” Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Gungahlin Bulls, 3pm Saturday at Seears Workwear Oval After losing the Queanbeyan derby, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos will be looking to put on a big performance against the Gungahlin Bulls this Saturday. Falling short by 10 points against the Queanbeyan Blues, the Roos will be full of fire and will be hoping to record a win against a Bulls outfit which enters the clash on the back of a loss. Despite a strong win in round one, Gungahlin were outplayed by the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in a heavy 34-8 defeat and will hope to make amends this weekend. Roos Coach Aaron Gorrell is wary of the Bulls forwards but believes his pack is just as good.

“They have a pretty strong forward pack, but that’s one of our strengths as well,” Gorrell said. “We’ll try to muscle up. It’s going to be pretty physical but our forward pack on their day is as good as any in the competition.” Queanbeyan Blues v Goulburn Workers Bulldogs, 3pm Saturday at Seiffert Oval The undefeated Queanbeyan Blues will host the winless Goulburn Workers Bulldogs in what will be a repeat of the 2014 & 2015 grand finals. The Blues are on a high after holding on to defeat fierce rivals, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and will be looking to continue their hot start to the season by claiming three straight wins. The Workers Bulldogs have shown plenty of promise but have nothing to show for their efforts with two straight losses. Coming up against the form team of the competition, the Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them as they try to contain Terry Campese’s men.

Sammy Says Hello again from Wakefield, England. The last few weeks have continued our roller coaster season with a good run winning 5 from 6 games before 2 losses over the Easter period which involves a game on good Friday that ended in a loss to ladder leaders Castleford and backing up on Easter Monday a loss to current title holders Wigan leaving us 7th but inside the top 8, we have another big game on Saturday against Warrington who currently sit outside the 8.

Sam Williams

It is a tough period and can really set up a teams season so it is important to get back to winning. The English set up involves promotion and relegation with the bottom 4 of the super league playing the top 4 of the championship after the regular 23 rounds with all teams starting on zero points, teams who then finish 4th and 5th play off in what is known as the million pound game with the loser either staying in super league or being relegated to the championship, a little confusing but it is a nervous 8 weeks for those involved. The top 8 continues before the semi finals are decided. Closer to home and the highlights packages being shown via Bar TV has given me a chance to see Campo put a couple of dominant performances together and along with the other ex NRL and super league players it is wonderful to see the local comp so strong, hopefully this brings plenty of locals through the gates to support their club. I'm sure that these players get as much out of going back and either coaching or playing as the local boys do playing and learning from them every week, it is something that one day I get the opportunity to do as well. Good luck to everyone over the weekend.

Sam Williams is a correspondent for the Rugby League Record who will write a fortnightly column about his experiences in England since his recent move to the Super League. Now plying his trade at Wakefield Trinity, the Cooma Colts junior has played 70 games in the NRL—most of those appearances coming for the Canberra Raiders.
