Open Women’s Tackle Competition a fantastic opportunity The rugby league aspirations of women in the Canberra region have been given a significant boost by the Open Women’s Tackle competition which begins this Friday night. Having previously only had junior tackle competitions or league tag available in seasons gone by, the introduction of an open women’s competition will allow women to continue playing rugby league once they are older than 18. Canberra Region Rugby League General Manager, Mark Vergano, said that although Ladies League Tag has proven to be an unqualified success for participation and involvement, women’s tackle will lead to further growth Canberra Raiders Women coach, Sharleen Coombers (left) in the game. “This is an exciting chapter in the evolution and development of the Canberra Region Rugby League,” Vergano said. “Canberra Rugby League established one of the earliest women’s tackle competition and now it is back with full force.” “The women involved in this competition are pioneers and its essential that they have the same opportunity to play the game they love and emulate their heroes. Going forward, these players will be heroes to the next generation of female players.” “The Open Tackle Women’s competition is an opportunity for female players to begin their pathway to playing for the Raiders at representative level.” Canberra Raiders Women’s coach Sharleen Coombers agreed. “It’s a fantastic opportunity, especially for our younger girls,” Coombers said. “Girls that thought they may not have been good enough to trial for the Raiders, now have the opportunity to have a go without there being any pressure on them.” “I have told the current Canberra Raiders team that we will be watching the local games to find the best players available.”

Canberra Raiders Cup First Grade - Round 4 Preview By Zac Gates Gungahlin Bulls v Queanbeyan Blues, 3pm Saturday at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval A struggling Gungahlin Bulls outfit is set to host the high-flying Queanbeyan Blues on Saturday afternoon. Sitting in seventh on the ladder, the Bulls will be out to bounce back from a 32-8 thumping at the hands of last year’s minor premiers the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.
Meanwhile, the visitors are aiming for their fourth win on the trot to maintain their place on the top of the ladder. They were at their scintillating best on the weekend in thrashing the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 44-18. Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Belconnen United Sharks, 3pm Saturday at Seears Workwear Oval Twenty minutes away, the Kangaroos will welcome the Belconnen United Sharks at Seears Workwear Oval in what fares as a David and Goliath clash. The Kangaroos clinched the minor premiership last season and are perched in fourth on the ladder, while the Belconnen United Sharks won the wooden spoon in 2016 and are now sitting in last with zero wins to their name. The Kangaroos have an eye on replicating the destruction blazed in their 32-8 pummelling of the Bulls on the weekend. The Sharks, on the other hand, will be out to write their wrongs after a narrow 26-22 loss to the Woden Valley Rams in Round 3. Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell said his side will again bring a good attitude into Saturday’s game.
“We won’t take any side we play lightly,” Gorrell said. “We just need to play to the best of our ability and hopefully that’ll be enough to get the two points.” Goulburn Workers Bulldogs v Tuggeranong Bushrangers, 2pm Sunday at Workers Arena A crucial two points will be up for grabs an hour’s drive down the Federal Highway when the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs host the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Workers Arena on Sunday. As per the Sharks, the eighth-placed Bulldogs will be hunting their first win of the season as they look to make amends for their 44-18 drubbing at the hands of the Blues.
Meanwhile, the fifth-placed Bushrangers should be feeling fresh having had the luxury of a bye on the weekend. They will be in pursuit of their second win of the season to potentially climb into the top four, pending the outcome of the Kangaroos’ clash with the Sharks. Tuggeranong coach Justin Giteau said his side will be looking to complete as many sets as possible. “Goulburn are a decent side, especially at home,” Giteau said. “We’re just going to have to complete a lot more sets. Our completion has been pretty ordinary the first two rounds. I think whichever team completes the best – and Goulburn seems to do that pretty well – will win the game.” Woden Valley Rams v Yass Magpies, 3pm Sunday at Phillip District Both sitting on six competition points, the third-placed Rams and second-placed Yass Magpies are looking to snag a win to potentially clinch first on the ladder. However, any opportunity to claim first place depends on the Gungahlin Bulls upsetting the Queanbeyan Blues. Buoyant after their gritty 26-22 win over the Sharks, the Rams will be in pursuit of their fourth win of the season to maintain their unbeaten run. On the other side of the ledger, the Magpies are also coming off a four-point win having upset the defending premiers West Belconnen Warriors 18-14. Woden captain Steve Ferry said the Magpies are a side to be wary of. “I reckon they’re going to be a really great side this year,” Ferry said. “They have recruited well and they have had a great start to the season. It’s definitely going to be a tough game. They’re going to have a big forward pack and they’ve got strike on the edges.”

League in the Big Apple The United States of America Rugby League (USARL) season is fast approaching and 2017 is sure to be a big year. Not only will clubs be putting their best foot forward in the hope for a National Title, but players, both current and new will be vying for a place on the domestic National Team, the USA HAWKS and a place on the 2017 World Cup Squad. This week I’m going to give an insight into the USARL teams and how the competition runs in the States. May 20 kicks off the first ever game between a USA domestic team and a Canadian domestic team. The game between the White Plains Wombats Matt Walsh and the Brantford Bulls will take place as a curtain raiser to the Toronto Wolfpack home game against the Barrow Raiders. May 20 will also be the date of the annual 9s tournament hosted by The Philadelphia Fight. They have hosted the event for the last few years and have pulled teams from all over the world. It’s always a good time and a great way to kick off the Rugby League calendar. The season proper will kick of June 3, which is the start of summer here in the States. Rugby League is played over the summer due to weather and Rugby Union seasons. A lot of the North East of America is under snow over the winter months, November through March, which makes playing impossible. The Rugby Union season runs March-June and September-November leaving the summer free for Rugby League. The temperatures soar during the summer months with game day temperatures often over 30 degrees. Rugby League is the toughest sport and in the USA it is played in the toughest temperatures. A lot of fields are turf so you can imagine how hot it does get; burnt soles of your feet are not uncommon! The season runs for 8 weeks with 8 teams participating in the North Conference; the Northern Virginia Eagles, Delaware Black Foxes, Philadelphia Fight, Brooklyn Kings, New York Knights, White Plains Wombats, Rhode Island Rebellion and the Boston 13s. In the South Conference there are 4 teams and the typical game day travel time for each team is 4-8 hours; the Atlanta Rhinos, Jacksonville Axeman, Central Florida Warriors and the Tampa Bay Mayhem. After the 8 weeks there are Semi Finals and Finals for each Conference, then the two Conference winners face off for the National Title. Feel free to follow the USARL on Facebook and Twitter for more updates on the upcoming season.
Matt Walsh is a correspondent for the Rugby League Record who will write a fortnightly column about his experiences playing and coaching rugby league in the USA. His side, the White Plains Wombats is based in New York and compete in the USA Rugby League competition.
