The Canberra Raiders shocked the NRL world in 2016, climbing to second place on the ladder and coming to within a whisker of making the grand final. A by-product of this success was the return of the Raiders to the international stage, and we reflect on the history of the Raiders playing representative football and look towards the future. We also hear from coach Ricky Stuart and head of physical performance Nigel Ashley-Jones on the changes to pre-season this year, and the challenge of staying ahead of the pack. There’s also a feature on the Meninga Medal and Dally M awards, where the Raiders were fittingly rewarded for their tremendous season. For all your up to date information on what’s happening with the Raiders visit www.raiders.com.au or follow us on social media.
RAIDERS IN THE COMMUNITY
Canberra was awash with green throughout 2016, as the Raiders combined for almost 600 hours of player appearances at community events.

RETURN OF THE REPS The Raiders dominated the international landscape for a decade, with the naming of Raiders players in a test team an annual given event and a way for Raiders fans to slowly ease their way into the usually long off-season.
An honest and forthright Stuart called it how he saw it and said at the time it would take high level players to turn the clubs fortunes around and it was up to the club to sign or develop these top line stars.
Like most good things this slowly came to an end as the seemingly endless parade of champions hung up their boots, with the landscape of test match footy shifting and Raiders players named in international teams becoming a hope rather than a constant.
“We’re in a position now where we need to rebuild,’’ Stuart said in his post-match pressconference following the loss in 2014. “Until I get Origin players or international players in here, around that group of blokes in there and I’ve got some brilliant young players coming through, it ain’t going to change.’’
Fast forward to present day and Raiders players are back in vogue at the top level, with six players selected to represent their countries during the recent four nations tournament. Shannon Boyd joined Australian team mate Josh Papalii (ruled out with injury) in the squad for the end of season four nation series, along with Jordan Rapana and Joe Tapine (New Zealand), and Josh Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead (England), giving the Raiders a third of their NRL team valuable international experience ahead of the 2017 season. Raiders Coach Ricky Stuart called it for what it was back in 2014, after his side lost to the Dragons 34-16 which ended a 14 year Hoodoo the Green Machine had over the Red V. 4
RAIDER MAGAZINE
With the current representative roster slowly starting to increase, Stuart’s plan is coming to fruition, with the next step seeing some of the Raiders star performers transitioning their 2016 club form into the start of the season and State of Origin series. With the likes of Jarrod Croker, Joey Leilua and Junior Paulo all on the selectors radars, Stuart’s vision may soon become a reality and Raiders fans can once again look forward to spending their off-seasons cheering on their heroes on the biggest stage.
Cast your eyes back to any end of season Big League of the late 80’s and early 90’s and you’ll see names like Meninga, Daley, Walters, Stuart, Clyde and Wiki on most international team sheets as they prepare for a trans-Tasman test series or Kangaroo tour.

PAVING THE 6
RAIDER MAGAZINE
Leading the revival is a drastically over-hauled squad, with just five players remaining from the 2013 team. Ricky Stuart, who began his tenure as head coach in 2014, made a lot of tough decisions early on in his time back in the nation’s capital. The start was far from easy. Eight wins in 2014, ten wins in 2015. Fast-forward to 2016, and with an overhauled roster and a vastly different culture, the new-look Raiders charged to within a few points of a grand final appearance. The challenge now lies in keeping the Raiders at the pointy end of the competition. Planning for 2017 began straight after the heart-breaking preliminary final loss to the Storm. “We started planning the week after the season finished. We had a planning session before the staff departed on break,” Stuart said. “It was important that all the staff had some time away, everybody is back now and putting everything into the process of ensuring the players return to their peak form.” In 2015 the Raiders were the first club to return to pre-season training. In 2016 they are one of the last. A shorter time-frame for pre-season presents lots of challenges for Stuart and his coaching staff.
WAY
“It changes a lot. We have a lot shorter preparation leading into Christmas. It’s a completely different scenario compared to what we have had over the last three off-seasons. We’ve had to change our program around quite considerably.” The challenge is compounded by the Raiders five Four Nations representatives having continued their seasons deep into November. The quintet won’t be due back at Raiders HQ until early in the new year, and even then, Stuart says it will be touch and go how quickly they return to full training. “It will depend on the welfare of them physically and mentally. They are young guys who have gained so much experience and knowledge out of the Four Nations.” “They will come back and look after themselves. We will monitor them and tread warily.”
Pre-season last year was dominated by photos and videos of a reborn Joey Leilua, a player many thought would never recapture the form he displayed early in his career. Recapture the form he did, becoming arguably the NRL’s most exciting and damaging player in 2016. That type of transformation and attitude is something Stuart expects from every player now. “The whole attitude towards the club and towards performance has been wonderful over the past 12 months. That’s what we demand now and it’s expected. I expect all the players to report for pre-season in reasonable condition.” “In 2017 we need to improve overall; in everything we do. We need to improve individually as staff, and individually as a playing unit. We will need to improve our overall performance in some small area to progress further.” Unlike his first two years in charge, the Raiders top 17 for 2017 will likely be very similar to what it was in 2016. Stability, according to Ricky, will provide a huge boost for the Raiders.
Nothing worthwhile ever comes easy. The struggles the Raiders endured throughout 2014 and 2015 paved the way for a return to winning ways in 2016, and the potential for much more glory in future years.
“Stability will be good. We all know each other’s games better now because we have had a full season together. I think stability will be a bonus when we have several players returning in January, and when we have a very short pre-season preparation period.” “We aren’t introducing a lot of new players to the squad. The new players who are joining will be projects. Overall, the core group is very similar to last year, which is a bonus.” ISSUE 3 | DECEMBER 2016

CLUB CADETS
WARRIORS PULL OFF MASSIVE UPSET
Every year the Raiders employ a number of junior players as club cadets. The role allows the young players to gain experience helping out in the football and marketing departments of the Raiders, while also assisting in community projects like Menslink’s Silence is Deadly campaign. Current first grade stars Jack Wighton and Luke Bateman both came through the program in the past.
After a rampant season in which they won 16-straight matches, it appeared a formality that the Queanbeyan Kangaroos would cruise to the Canberra Region Rugby League first-grade title.
Two of the members of the program in 2016, Quinlyn Cannon and Matthew Lyons, have now gained full-time employment and also starred for the Raiders SG Ball side in 2016.
The West Belconnen Warriors obviously didn’t get the memo, and pulled off a stunning last-minute upset to claim the title. With scores level at 24- 24 entering the final moments of the game, McIntyre Medal winner Bobby Roberts stepped up to calmly slot a penalty goal that secured the Warriors their first premiership in nine years. In other grades, the Queanbeyan Blues comprehensively defeated the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the reserve grade final, whilst Tuggeranong took home the Under 18’s title. The Belconnen United Sharks capped off a great season by the claiming the inaugural CRC Ladies’ league tag title over Tuggeranong.
Supported by the Raiders, Quinlyn and Matthew completed their certificate four in youth work while in the program, which allowed them to begin work as teacher’s aides in local schools.

PLANNING FOR SUCCESS
You can often hear Nigel Ashley-Jones before you see him. As the Raiders head of physical performance, Ashley-Jones uses his trusty whistle and fearsome voice to push the Raiders to their physical and mental limits during pre-season training.
Ashley-Jones has been at the Raiders for just over four years, and in that time, he has gradually tweaked his approach to pre-season to ensure the Raiders physical performance is at the top of the league. Planning is part and parcel of his role, with multiple spreadsheets outlining exactly what each member of the 2017 squad needs to do throughout the upcoming pre-season.
Due to the Raiders late finish to the season, Ashley-Jones had to have multiple pre-season plans in place depending on how far the Raiders made it into September. “We had a plan for every scenario. Once we realised we were going to be top four, we would plan for the worst and bestcase scenarios. The player welfare rules regarding compulsory holidays also changed, which made it a bit harder to tie everything together” Ashley-Jones said. “It wasn’t difficult, but obviously, you never know where you are going to finish. It was a good problem to have.” A shorter pre-season isn’t a drawback according to Ashley-Jones, who says each session will be of added importance now. “It is more difficult fitting pre-season into a shorter time-frame, but it is also a positive. In past years, we have been ready to play by January, and then we would cruise through February.”
“This season, our February will now be like our past Januarys, and we will be ready to play by the start of the competition. The danger with a long pre-season is you peak too early, and in February you go backwards. Players can also get bored with the training and overuse injuries occur. “We need to be so efficient in training it’s not funny. Every metre counts. In the past we’ve had occasions where we wouldn’t mind if players had a bad session. That isn’t the case now.” Despite only being a few weeks in, Ashley-Jones says attitudes have been excellent so far at pre-season training. “The attitudes so far have been fantastic. Every year the team gets easier to coach. We aren’t perfect, but everybody is in a really good place.” “It’s a great place to come to work. Every player is ambitious and wants success.”

DALLY M The Raiders charge to within a few points of a grand final appearance captivated the NRL world, and the individuals that played a large role in the success were deservingly rewarded at the 2016 Dally M awards night. Jarrod Croker’s phenomenal season saw him fend off competition from Paul Gallen, Cameron Smith and Johnathon Thurston to collect the Captain of the Year and fan’s choice Provan-Summons Medal. In a year when he broke two huge Raiders records, Croker also collected the top point-scorer award for the second consecutive year. The man who handed Croker the reins as captain, Ricky Stuart, took out the Coach of the Year, after piloting the Raiders to their best season in over two decades. The night was capped off by destructive centre Joey Leilua being named in the NRL’s Team of the Year. After leading voting throughout the start of the season, inspirational hooker Josh Hodgson slid to seventh place in the overall Dally M voting.

MENINGA MEDAL Almost half of the Raiders top 17 start their name with the letter J. It was fitting then that two Josh’s – Papalii and Hodgson - took home the Raiders Meninga Medal. Voted on by players and coaches after each game, Hodgson and Papalii couldn’t split at the top of the leaderboard in only the third occasion the Raiders top award has been a draw. The destructive duo of Jordan Rapana and Joey Leilua were rewarded with the NRL Coach’s Award, while rookie of the year went to Clay Priest. Sia Soliola’s tremendous impact off the field in the community was acknowledged by taking home the clubman of the year.
