SEASON 2017 PLAYER PROFILES FULL PROFILES AT RAIDERS.COM.AU
EDDIE AIONO
BLAKE AUSTIN
Position: Wing Height: 185cm Weight: 100kg
Position: Five-eighth Height: 186cm Weight: 95kg
Aiono joins the Raiders from the Mounties, where he was a prolific try-scorer on the wing.
Injuries hampered Austin at times last season, but after a strong pre-season he will look to reclaim his mantle as the best five-eighth in the game this year. Austin’s partnership with Sezer in the halves will only be stronger heading into their second season together.
Speedy and with a great knack of finding the try-line, Aiono will push to make his first-grade debut this year.
KURT BAPTISE
LUKE BATEMAN
Position: Hooker Height: 175cm Weight: 85kg
Position: Prop, lock Height: 182cm Weight: 100kg
An achilles injury will delay Baptiste’s start to the season, after rupturing it during training late in 2016. The crafty hooker recently signed a new two-year contract with the Raiders.
Bateman enjoyed the most consistent season of his career in 2016, playing in 20 games while also extending his contract with the club until the end of 2018. Bateman’s energy and aggression off the bench has quickly made him a fan favourite.

RAIDER MAGAZINE
SHANNON BOYD
ADAM CLYDSDALE
Position: Prop Height: 194cm Weight: 122kg
Position: Hooker Height: 178cm Weight: 88kg
Man-mountain Boyd will head into 2017 with plenty of confidence after his first international tour with the Kangaroos. Boyd’s destructive hit-ups and potent defence has him in the frame for a NSW Blues jumper come Origin period.
In his first season at the Raiders after joining the club from the Knights, hooker Adam Clydsdale played four first-grade games and was one of the Mounties best players in their charge to the grand final.
NICK COTRIC Position: Wing, Centre, Fullback Height: 185cm Weight: 98kg At just 18 years of age, Cotric is an exciting talent who is a strong chance of making his first-grade debut in 2017. Having bulked up considerably during his first pre- season with the NRL squad, Cotric can cause plenty of havoc on the edges.
LACHLAN CROKER Position: Five-Eighth, Halfback Height: 180cm Weight: 92kg Nephew of club legend Jason Croker, Lachlan will be a valuable back-up in the halves to Aidan Sezer and Blake Austin. Lachlan made his NRL debut last year for the Raiders, before an ACL injury brought an untimely end to his season.
JARROD CROKER (C) Position: Centre
Height: 184cm
Weight: 93kg
After smashing a couple of huge club records in 2016, Croker will start his season on the sidelines after a knee injury during the All Stars match in early February. Due back a month or so into the season, Croker is just seven games shorts of 200 NRL appearances for the Raiders.
JOSH HODGSON
JOEY LEILUA
Position: Hooker Height: 180cm Weight: 94kg
Position: Centre Height: 185cm Weight: 106kg
Hodgson has been a revelation for the Raiders in the past two seasons, and will head into 2017 as one of the premier players in the NRL. Hodgson will fill-in as Captain while Croker is out injured.
Joey Leilua lived up to his enormous potential in 2016, becoming one of the NRL's most dangerous and influential players in his first full season at the Raiders. Leilua’s partnership with Rapana on the Raiders right-edge will be one to watch in 2017.
JEFF LIMA
DUNAMIS LUI
Position: Prop Height: 182cm Weight: 106kg
Position: Prop Height: 180cm Weight: 104kg
After returning to the NRL in 2016, Lima made an impressive start to his Raiders career before injuries brought a halt to his year. If he can stay healthy, he has the potential to break back into the Raiders top 17 in his final year of playing.
Lui joins the Raiders on a twoyear deal. A former Samoan international, Lui made ten appearances for the St George Dragons in 2016.
ISSUE 1 | MARCH 2017
5
MAKAHESI MAKATOA
BRENT NADEN
Position: Second Row, Lock, Prop Height: 183cm Weight: 106kg
Position: Centre Height: 189cm Weight: 92kg
Makatoa is a strong forward who joins the Raiders from the Bulldogs. Making his first appearance for the Raiders at the Auckland Nines, Makatoa impressed with numerous big hit- ups.
Naden joins the Raiders from the Mounties and will be valuable cover in the outside backs.
KATO OTTIO
JOSH PAPALII
Position: Wing Height: 194cm Weight: 102kg
Position: Second Row Height: 182cm Weight: 112kg
Ottio was the leading try-scorer in the NSW ISP last season. Currently recovering from an ACL injury, Ottio has the skills to push for his NRL debut later in the year.
Meninga Medal winner alongside Josh Hodgson, Papalii reclaimed his Australian jersey and helped Queensland to an Origin series victory in 2016.
6
JUNIOR PAULO
CLAY PRIEST
Position: Prop Height: 187cm Weight: 123kg
Position: Prop, Lock Height: 183cm Weight: 97kg
Paulo is a destructive forward who has a big future ahead of him at the Raiders. A strong start to the season will have him in the mix for a Blues Origin jersey.
One of the feel-good stories of 2016. Priest was plucked from obscurity to make his NRL debut at the age of 27 and went on to win the Raiders rookie of the year.
JORDAN RAPANA
ZAC SANTO
Position: Wing Height: 187cm Weight: 100kg
Position: Fullback, Wing Height: 175cm Weight: 85kg
One of the breakthrough stars of the 2016 NRL season, Rapana is a blindingly fast winger who represented New Zealand at the Four Nations and finished equal top try-scorer in the NRL.
Santo is a speedy and skilful fullback who played one NRL game for the Raiders in 2016.
RAIDER MAGAZINE
AIDAN SEZER
SIA SOLIOLA
Position: Halfback Height: 180cm Weight: 90kg
Position: Second Row, Lock Height: 185cm Weight: 100kg
In his first season at the Raiders, halfback Sezer impressed with his game management and kicking. His partnership with Austin will only improve after another pre-season.
One of the older heads in the Raiders forward pack, 2015 Meninga Medal winner Sia Soliola is a true professional that leads from example.
SCOTT SORENSEN
JOSEPH TAPINE
Position: Second Row Height: 183cm Weight: 96kg
Position: Prop, Second Row, Lock Height: 188cm Weight: 107kg
Sorensen impressed during a short training stint with the Raiders late in 2016, earning himself a contract and a chance at adding to his tally of three NRL matches.
ELLIOTT WHITEHEAD Position: Second Row Height: 187cm Weight: 106kg Whitehead had a phenomenal first season in the NRL after moving from the Super League. His partnership with Leilua and Rapana on the Raiders right-edge is destructive and should produce plenty of points in 2017.
A late addition to the Raiders team for 2016, young gun Joseph Tapine quickly forced his way into the first-grade team and never left. Tapine was rewarded for his strong form with selection in New Zealand’s Four Nations team.
DAVE TAYLOR
JORDAN TURNER
Position: Second Row, Prop, Centre Height: 187cm Weight: 131kg
Position: Halves, Centre, Second Row Height: 186cm Weight: 105kg
After impressing during a train and trial contract in pre- season, former Queensland and Australian representative Dave Taylor joins the Raiders on a one- year deal for 2017.
The Raiders English recruitment continues with the addition of Super League veteran Jordan Turner. Turner can play in a range of positions, which is extremely valuable in the event of injuries or representative call-ups.
JACK WIGHTON Position: Fullback Height: 189cm Weight: 93kg Becoming more comfortable at fullback with each game, Wighton was a pivotal member of the Raiders attack in 2016 and pulled off numerous individual defensive heroics.

JARROD CROKER CAPTAIN’S CHAT 2
3

It was a surreal moment that shocked Raiders and Rugby League fans across Australia and the World. Taking a routine hit-up for the World All Stars, like he has done thousands of times before, ended in agony for Raiders captain Jarrod Croker. As one fan on Twitter aptly summed it up at the time: “If you're unaware how universally loved Jarrod Croker is, just search his name on Twitter right now. Like everyone, I really hope he's ok.” Thankfully, the injury isn’t season-ending, and Croker will only miss a handful of matches for the Raiders. While being carried off the field by medical staff, Croker struggled to remain positive. “Obviously, I was pretty shattered when the injury happened. It was hard to keep positive being helped off the field and when I was down in the changerooms with the medical staff,” Croker said. “I think every player fears for the worst when they get injured. It was such a relief to find out I would only be missing a handful of games, compared to having to sit out a whole season.” Watching from the sidelines will be an unfamiliar position for Croker, who has gained a reputation as one of the NRL’s most reliable and robust players. “I’ve been pretty fortunate not to have too many injuries in my career, so the next month or so is going to be new to me – watching the

matches from the sideline instead of playing.” “I’ll try and help out the team as much as possible on game day, and I’m sure I can learn some new things from watching. “Looking on the bright side, it’s going to be good to watch the Viking Clap in full at our home games. I’m really looking forward to that.” The Raiders are fortunate to be stocked with numerous leaders who are more than capable of filling in while Croker is out. “Hodgo and Sia are natural leaders and the team are in great hands with them. I don’t think it matters who wears the captain’s badge.” “There’s a few guys in the team who have really stepped up during pre-season and are taking on more leadership roles around the team. “With more of the team being selected in representative squads, I think we will continue to see more of the boys stepping up. “Playing for the Kangaroos at the Four Nations has made a huge difference for Shannon Boyd, and I think that will show on the field this year.” Despite the injury, Croker will still travel to the Raiders away games. With a relatively similar squad to last year, the bond between the players continues to strengthen. “We are fortunate to have kept pretty much the same team as last year, and we spend a lot of time together on and off the field.” “The whole team likes heading up early to away games, and we stay together the night before home games which worked really last year.” Voted as the NRL captain of the year last season, the Raiders are in a great position with Croker leading the team around again in 2017. While it will be a strange sight seeing the Raiders run out at GIO Stadium without Croker at the front, his intense rehab routine will ensure he is back as soon as possible.

NYC SEASON PREVIEW Raiders NYC coach Brett White learnt a lot about the ups and downs of coaching in 2016.
A torrid patch midway through the season had many pencilling in the young Raiders as wooden spoon favourites, before an inspired finish to the season saw them defy the critics to make the finals. Injuries cruelled the Raiders in the first-half of the season last year, causing constant changes to the team which disrupted momentum. “The first-half of the season last year was disappointing, we had a lot of injuries and turnover within the team. Once we settled down and had a consistent 17 each week we gained a lot of confidence and found strong form,” White said. Several positive trial performances has White confident he has found his best-possible team to start the season. “The way the trials go you start with a big group, there was a lot of new guys I wanted to have a look at. The group has been whittled down now and we are fine-tuning things before the start of the season.” “You don’t want to go on trial form too much, but we are heading in the right direction. “The positive thing is 90% of the team we have now is the same as what finished the season last year. Sticking to a consistent group each week will flow into results.” The squad has been bolstered by the addition of several exciting talents, including Paul Roache, who played for the Raiders at the 2017 Auckland Nines. Unfortunately, Roache will miss most of
MOUNTIES SEASON PREVIEW As the Raiders feeder team playing in the NSW Intrust Super Premiership, the Mounties form a great breeding ground for the next generation of Raiders stars.

RAIDER MAGAZINE
At the helm of the Mounties is Steve Antonelli, who will return for his fifth year coaching the western Sydney-based team in 2017. Antonelli spends Monday-Thursday in Canberra with the Raiders, before traveling up to Sydney on Friday for the Mounties Captain’s Run and game day. After dropping only three games during the regular season last year, the Mounties were denied at the final post by the Illawarra Cutters. While a number of factors contributed to the heart-breaking loss, key injuries to experience players at the back-end of the year played a major role. Antonelli has been busy recruiting to ensure the team have that’s needed at the business end of the season. “Last year we were a little bit shy with experienced cup players. Guys like Isaac John and Yileen Gordon, they have a bit of footy under their belts and NRL experience,”Antonelli said. The departure of Sam Williams to the Super League will be a big hole to fill for the Mounties, after Williams won the ISP Player of the Year award and steered the Mounties to numerous comeback victories.
the season after injuring his knee in pre-season training. Two Fijian flyers, Mikaele Ravalawa and Kitione Vikash, are also new faces in the team this year, and possess plenty of talent according to White. “Mikaele hasn’t been here very long but has settled in really well. He looks to be an asset that we will use this year. Kitione is also pushing to be in that first 17 side for the start of the season.” “There’s a few added changes in a few different areas. Those new guys that have come in have brought a lot to the team, which is positive.” After winning the NYC’s inaugural premiership in 2008, the Raiders will be looking to go out on a high in 2017, with the NYC set to be replaced by a new state-based competition from 2018 onwards. 2017 NYC Squad Sione Afemui, Sam Bramich, Connor Brebner, Harry Brown, Quinlyn Cannon, Jayden Carroll, Lachlan Cooper, Sam Finnegan, Kalani Going, Emre Guler, Cody Hodge, Daniel Keir, Sato Ketia- Opo, Sebastian Kris, Ron Leapai, Mathew Lyons, Kye Madden, Derek Hay, Jacob McGrath, Jack Murchie, Andre Niko, Fabien Paletua-Kiri, Zac Patch, Mikaele Ravalawa, Paul Roache, William Samuel, Matthew Scott, Mitchell Smith, Logan Spaander, Joshua Stuckey, Jarred Tuite, Keb Vaetoe, Harry Van Dartel, Komiti ViaTuilagi, Kitione Vikash, Matthew Woolnough, Hudson Young
“I’ve still got lots of leaders in the squad – Glen Buttriss will be captain this year. I’m fortunate to have so many guys with experience in the squad who can step up. Following in the path Raiders Rookie of the Year Clay Priest blazed last year, three more Mounties players have earned themselves full-time Raiders contacts for 2017: Scott Sorensen, Eddie Aiono and Brent Naden. “Clay has gone onto bigger and better things,” joked Antonelli. “It’s really pleasing to see more boys getting their chance with the Raiders. As long as they keep digging in and having a go I think they will get their chance sooner or later.” Mounties start the season off with seven home games, six at Aubrey Keech Reserve in Sydney and one at GIO Stadium. Their first match at GIO Stadium is in Round Five against the Wentworthville Magpies.

DANCE COMPETITION
MEMBERS LOUNGE RETURNS
The Canberra Raiders received 17 submissions from local dance schools for the 2017 dance competition.
After the success of the members lounge at GIO Stadium in 2016, it will return in 2017 at every Raiders home game. All Raiders members are welcome to visit the lounge from gates open, with games, giveaways and interviews with coaches and players.
The quality of the submissions made it impossible to narrow a selection down to just 12 schools, and the Raiders have decided to accept all 17 dance schools. Each dance school will get the opportunity to perform at a Raiders home game in 2017 and will also receive $500 to benefit their organisation. The Raiders game-day entertainment will now be one of the more unique in Australia, with the successful dance schools covering many categories, including Bollywood, Irish Dancing, Physical Culture, Hip Hop and Funk. Congratulations to the following dance schools: PLAY - The Dance Agency

The members lounge is located in the Meninga Grandstand on the west of the stadium. Just follow the signs up the stairs from the West forecourt. Apart from being able to watch matches from the comfort of the lounge, Raiders members will also have a chance to walk away with $50,000. One full-season ticketed member will be randomly selected before each of the Raiders first ten home games, and will spin a prize wheel with a 1 in 50 of winning $50,000. The selected member will also be invited into the Raiders changeroom post-game to meet the players and coaches, and will also receive a signed 2017 Raiders Auckland Nines jersey.
